We have obtained [Mg/Fe] measurements for 76.3% of the stars in the MILES spectral library used for understanding stellar atmospheres and stellar populations in galaxies and star clusters. These abundance ratios were obtained through (1) a compilation of values from the literature using abundances from high-resolution spectroscopic studies and (2) a robust spectroscopic analysis using the MILES mid-resolution optical spectra. All the [Mg/Fe] values were carefully calibrated to a single uniform scale, by using an extensive control sample with results from high-resolution spectra. The small average uncertainties in the calibrated [Mg/Fe] values (respectively 0.09 and 0.12 dex with methods (1) and (2)) and the good coverage of the stars with [Mg/Fe] over stellar atmospheric parameter space of the library will permit the building of new simple stellar populations (SSPs) with empirical $α$-enhancements. These will be available for a range of [Mg/Fe], including both sub-solar and super-solar values, and for several metallicities and ages. These models will open up new prospects for testing and applications of evolutionary stellar population synthesis.
We present a new library of semi-empirical stellar spectra that is based on the empirical MILES library. A new, high resolution library of theoretical stellar spectra is generated that is specifically designed for use in stellar population studies. We test these models across their full wavelength range against other model libraries and find reasonable agreement in their predictions of spectral changes due to atmospheric $α$-element variations, known as differential corrections. We also test the models against the MILES and MaStar libraries of empirical stellar spectra and also find reasonable…
We have obtained [Mg/Fe] for around 77% of the stars of the MILES library of stellar spectra in order to include this important information into simple stellar population (SSP) models. The abundance ratios, which were carefully calibrated to a single uniform scale, were obtained through a compilation from high spectral resolution works plus robust spectroscopic analysis at medium resolution. The high resolution data provided an extensive control sample. Average uncertainties (0.06 and 0.12 dex for the high and medium resolution samples respectively) and the good coverage of the stars with [Mg/…
Context. Empirical libraries of stellar spectra are used for stellar classification and synthesis of stellar populations. MILES is a medium spectral-resolution library in the optical domain covering a wide range of temperatures, surface gravities and metallicities. Aims. We re-determine the atmospheric parameters of these stars in order to improve the homogeneity and accuracy. We build an interpolating function that returns a spectrum as a function of the three atmospheric parameters, and finally, we characterize the precision of the wavelength calibration and stability of the spectral resolut…
In order to build more realistic single stellar population (SSP) models with variable alpha-enhancement, we have recently determined [Mg/Fe] in a uniform scale with a precision of about 0.1 dex for 752 stars in the MILES empirical library. The [alpha/Fe] abundance ratio is commonly used as a good temporal scale indicator of star formation, taking Mg as a template for alpha elements. Calcium is another element whose abundance is currently being investigated for the MILES stars. The MILES library is also being expanded by around 20% by including stars with known Teff, log g, [Fe/H] and [Mg/Fe]. …
We report the stellar atmospheric parameters for 7503 spectra contained in the first release of the MaNGA stellar library (MaStar) in SDSS DR15. The first release of MaStar contains 8646 spectra measured from 3321 unique stars, each covering the wavelength range 3622 Å to 10354 Å with a resolving power of $R \sim$ 1800. In this work, we first determined the basic stellar parameters: effective temperature ($\rm T_{eff}$), surface gravity ($\log g$), and metallicity ($\rm[Fe/H]$), which best fit the data using an empirical interpolator based on the Medium-resolution Isaac Newton Telescope librar…
Context: The full spectrum fitting of stellar spectra against a library of empirical spectra is a well-established approach to measure the atmospheric parameters of FGK stars with a high internal consistency. Extending it towards cooler stars still remains a challenge. Aims: We address this question by improving the interpolator of the MILES (Medium-resolution INT Library of Empirical Spectra) library in the low effective temperature regime (Tefff < 4800 K), and we refine the determination of the parameters of the cool MILES stars. Methods: We use the ULySS package to determine the atmospheric…
To analyse stellar populations in galaxies a widely used method is to apply theoretically derived responses of stellar spectra and line indices to element abundance variations, hereafter referred to as response functions. These are applied in a differential way, to base models, in order to generate spectra or indices with different abundance patterns. In this paper sets of such response functions for three different stellar evolutionary stages are tested with new empirical [Mg/Fe] abundance data for the MILES stellar spectral library. Recent theoretical models and observations are used to inve…
We computed a comprehensive set of theoretical ultraviolet spectra of hot, massive stars with the radiation-hydrodynamics code WM-Basic. This model atmosphere and spectral synthesis code is optimized for computing the strong P Cygni-type lines originating in the winds of hot stars, which are the strongest features in the ultraviolet spectral region. The computed set is suitable as a spectral library for inclusion in evolutionary synthesis models of star clusters and star-forming galaxies. The chosen stellar parameters cover the upper left Hertzsprung-Russell diagram at L >~ 10^2.75 Lsun and T_…
We present the third data release (DR3) of the X-shooter Spectral Library (XSL). This moderate-to-high resolution, near-ultraviolet-to-near-infrared ($350-2480$ nm, R $\sim$ 10 000) spectral library is composed of 830 stellar spectra of 683 stars. DR3 improves upon the previous data release by providing the combined de-reddened spectra of the three X-shooter segments over the full $350-2480$ nm wavelength range. It also includes additional 20 M-dwarf spectra from the ESO archive. We provide detailed comparisons between this library and Gaia EDR3, MILES, NGSL, CaT library, and (E-)IRTF. The nor…
This study expands the coverage and improves the homogeneity of the distribution of MILES template stars in the parameter space, as well as extends the wavelength coverage of the template spectra to the far red beyond the Ca\,{\sc{ii}} triplet. To achieve this we have carried out a major observational campaign using the OMR long-slit spectrograph mounted on the NAOC 2.16\,m telescope and the YFOSC long-slit spectrograph mounted on the YNAO 2.4\,m telescope. The original sample is based on the MILES library, supplemented by 918 stars selected from PASTEL database. In total, 822 OMR and 1,324 YF…

We present the STARS library, a grid of tidal disruption event (TDE) simulations interpolated to provide the mass fallback rate ($dM/dt$) to the black hole for a main-sequence star of any stellar mass, stellar age, and impact parameter. We use a one-dimensional stellar evolution code to construct stars with accurate stellar structures and chemical abundances, then perform tidal disruption simulations in a three-dimensional adaptive-mesh hydrodynamics code with a Helmholtz equation of state, in unprecedented resolution: from 131 to 524 cells across the diameter of the star. The interpolated lib…
We present new FLAMES@VLT spectroscopic observations of 30 stars in the field of the LMC stellar cluster NGC 1866. NGC 1866 is one of the few young and massive globular cluster that is close enough so that its stars can be individually studied in detail. Radial velocities have been used to separate stars belonging to the cluster and to the LMC field and the same spectra have been used to derive chemical abundances for a variety of elements, from [Fe/H] to the light (i.e. Na, O, Mg...) to the heavy ones. The average iron abundance of NGC 1866 turns out to be [Fe/H]= -0.43+-0.01 dex (with a disp…
We present a $0.7-2.5μm$ spectral library of 284 stars observed with the medium-resolution infrared spectrograph, SpeX, at the 3.0 meter NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) on Maunakea, Hawaii. This library extends the metallicity range of the IRTF Cool Star library beyond solar metallicity to $-1.7 <$ [Fe/H] $< 0.6$. All of the observed stars are also in the MILES optical stellar library, providing continuous spectral coverage for each star from $0.35-2.5μm$. The spectra are absolute flux calibrated using Two Micron All Sky Survey photometry and the continuum shape of the spectra is prese…
Accurate model stellar fluxes are key for the analysis of observations of individual stars or stellar populations. Model spectra differ from real stellar spectra due to limitations of the input physical data and adopted simplifications, but can be empirically calibrated to maximise their resemblance to actual stellar spectra. I describe a least-squares procedure of general use and test it on the MILES library.
Aims: We developed a new method of estimating the stellar parameters Teff, log g, [M/H], and elemental abundances. This method was implemented in a new code, SP_Ace (Stellar Parameters And Chemical abundances Estimator). This is a highly automated code suitable for analyzing the spectra of large spectroscopic surveys with low or medium spectral resolution (R=2,000-20,000). Methods: After the astrophysical calibration of the oscillator strengths of 4643 absorption lines covering the wavelength ranges 5212-6860Å and 8400-8924Å, we constructed a library that contains the equivalent widths (EW) of…
The X-shooter Spectral Library (XSL) is an empirical stellar library at medium spectral resolution covering the wavelength range from 3000 Åto 24 800 Å. This library aims to provide a benchmark for stellar population studies. In this work, we present a uniform set of stellar atmospheric parameters, effective temperatures, surface gravities, and iron abundances for 754 spectra of 616 XSL stars. We used the full-spectrum fitting package ULySS with the empirical MILES library as reference to fit the ultraviolet-blue (UVB) and visible (VIS) spectra. We tested the internal consistency and we compar…
Integrated light spectroscopy from galaxies can be used to study the stellar populations that cannot be resolved into individual stars. This analysis relies on stellar population synthesis (SPS) techniques to study the formation history and structure of galaxies. However, the spectral templates available for SPS are limited, especially in the near-infrared. We present A-LIST (APOGEE Library of Infrared SSP Templates), a new set of high-resolution, near-IR SSP spectral templates spanning a wide range of ages (2-12 Gyr), metallicities ($\rm -2.2 < [M/H] < +0.4$) and $α$ abundances ($\rm -0.2 < […
We present a high resolution synthetic spectral library, INTRIGOSS, designed for studying FGK stars. The library is based on atmosphere models computed with specified individual element abundances via ATLAS12 code. Normalized SPectra (NSP) and surface Flux SPectra (FSP), in the 4830-5400 A, wavelength range, were computed with the SPECTRUM code. INTRIGOSS uses the solar composition by Grevesse et al. 2007 and four [alpha/Fe] abundance ratios and consists of 15,232 spectra. The synthetic spectra are computed with astrophysical gf-values derived by comparing synthetic predictions with a very hig…
We present the stellar parameters and elemental abundances of a set of A--F-type supergiant stars HD\,45674, HD\,180028, HD\,194951 and HD\,224893 using high resolution ($R$\,$\sim$\,42,000) spectra taken from ELODIE library. We present the first results of the abundance analysis for HD\,45674 and HD\,224893. We reaffirm the abundances for HD\,180028 and HD\,194951 studied previously by Luck (2014) respectively. Alpha-elements indicates that objects belong to the thin disc population. From their abundances and its location on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram seems point out that HD\,45675, HD\,…
We present a new library of synthetic spectra based on the stellar atmosphere code PHOENIX. It covers the wavelength range from 500Å to 55000Å with a resolution of R=500000 in the optical and near IR, R=100000 in the IR and Δλ=0.1Å in the UV. The parameter space covers 2300K<=Teff<=8000K, 0.0<=log(g)<=6.0, -4.0<=[Fe/H]<=+1.0 and -0.3<=[α/Fe]<=+0.8. The library is work-in-progress and going to be extended to at least Teff=25000K. We use a new self-consistent way of describing the microturbulence for our model atmospheres. The entire library of synthetic spectra will be available for download. F…
Theoretical stellar libraries have been increasingly used to overcome limitations of empirical libraries, e.g. by exploring atmospheric parameter spaces not well represented in the latter. This work presents a new theoretical library which covers 3000 $\leq$ Teff $\leq$ 25000\,K, -0.5 $\leq$ log g $\leq$ 5.5, and 12 chemical mixtures covering 0.0017 $\leq$ Z $\leq$ 0.049 at both scaled-solar and $α$-enhanced compositions. This library complements previous ones by providing: (i) homogeneous computations of opacity distribution functions, models atmospheres, statistical surface fluxes and high r…
A chemical abundance analysis is made of two F type high proper motion stars selected from the {\sc ELODIE} library. We use high resolution (R=42\,000) and high signal to noise ratio (S/N=103, 36 $-$per$-$pixel) échelle spectra from the {\sc ELODIE} library of HD\,102870 and BD\,+20\,3603, as two representative F type high proper motion stars, to determine fundamental parameters and photospheric abundances of 16 chemical elements including slow (s)$-$ and rapid (r)$-$process elements from Y to Ba. The chemical composition and kinematic parameters of the stars imply that they belong to differen…
Spectral evolution models are a widely used tool for determining the stellar content of galaxies. I provide a review of the latest developments in stellar atmosphere and evolution models, with an emphasis on massive stars. In contrast to the situation for low- and intermediate mass stars, the current main challenge for spectral synthesis models are the uncertainties and rapid revision of current stellar evolution models. Spectral libraries, in particular those drawn from theoretical model atmospheres for hot stars, are relatively mature and can complement empirical templates for larger paramet…
(abridged) We have observed almost 1/3 of the globular clusters in the Milky Way, targeting distant and/or highly reddened objects, besides a few reference clusters. A large sample of red giant stars was observed with FORS2@VLT/ESO at R ~ 2,000. The method for derivation of stellar parameters is presented with application to six reference clusters. We aim at deriving the stellar parameters effective temperature, gravity, metallicity and alpha-element enhancement, as well as radial velocity, for membership confirmation of individual stars in each cluster. We analyse the spectra collected for th…
The precision differential abundance (PDA) technique is applied to the mid-F stars Procyon and $θ$ Scl using spectra from the ESO UVESPOP library. We relate PDA patterns to endogenous processes related to condensation or to exogenous processes connected to Galactic chemical evolution (GCE). We employ one-dimensional LTE models, but emphasize the use of weaker lines ($\leq$ 20 mÅ) than are typically used in such studies. We compare our results with PDAs of solar-type stars. Abundances and PDAs are determined for 28 elements: C, N, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, S, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn,…
We present the second data release (DR2) of the X-Shooter Spectral Library (XSL), which contains all the spectra obtained over the six semesters of that program. This release supersedes our first data release from Chen et al. 2014, with a larger number of spectra (813 observations of 666 stars) and with a more extended wavelength coverage as the data from the near-infrared arm of the X-Shooter spectrograph are now included. The DR2 spectra then consist of three segments that were observed simultaneously and, if combined, cover the range between $\sim$300 nm and $\sim$2.45 $μ$m at a spectral re…
We report on two distinct computational approaches to self-consistently measure photospheric properties of large samples of stars. Both procedures consist of a set of several semi-integrated tasks based on shell and Python scripts, which efficiently run either our own codes or open source software commonly adopted by the astronomical community. One approach aims to derive the main stellar photospheric parameters and abundances of a few elements by analysing high-resolution spectra from a given public library homogeneously constructed. The other one is applied to recover the abundance of a sing…
Automated method of full spectrum fitting gives reliable estimates of stellar atmospheric parameters (Teff, logg and [Fe/H]) for late A, F, G and early K type stars. Recently, the technique was further improved in the cooler regime and the validity range was extended up to M6 - M7 spectral type( Teff $\sim\,2900$ K). The present study aims to explore the application of this method on the low-resolution spectra of Am stars, a class of chemically peculiar (CP) stars, to examine its robustness for these objects. We use ULySS with MILES (Medium-resolution INT Library of Empirical Spectra) V2 spect…
Context. An increasing number of high-resolution stellar spectra is available today thanks to many past and ongoing extensive spectroscopic surveys. Consequently, the scientific community needs automatic procedures to derive atmospheric parameters and individual element abundances. Aims. Based on the widely known SPECTRUM code by R. O. Gray, we developed an integrated spectroscopic software framework suitable for the determination of atmospheric parameters (i.e., effective temperature, surface gravity, metallicity) and individual chemical abundances. The code, named iSpec and freely distribute…
Recent work has used spectra of about 5000 stars in NGC 6397 that were extracted from a MUSE mosaic to determine the atmospheric parameters for these stars by fitting the spectra against the Goettingen Spectral Library. A significant change in metallicity between the turn off and the red giant branch was found and was discussed as a possible manifestation of predicted effects of atomic diffusion. However, the small amplitude of the effect and inconsistency with earlier measurements call for more attention before this result is interpreted. Systematic effects due to the interpolation or to the …
Almost all of the elements heavier than hydrogen that are present in our solar system were produced by nuclear burning processes either in the early universe or at some point in the life cycle of stars. In all of these environments, there are dozens to thousands of nuclear species that interact with each other to produce successively heavier elements. In this paper, we present SkyNet, a new general-purpose nuclear reaction network that evolves the abundances of nuclear species under the influence of nuclear reactions. SkyNet can be used to compute the nucleosynthesis evolution in all astrophys…
We present FEROS--Lick/SDSS, an empirical database of Lick/SDSS spectral indices of FGK stars to be used in population synthesis projects for discriminating different stellar populations within the integrated light of galaxies and globular clusters. From about 2500 FEROS stellar spectra obtained from the ESO Science Archive Facility we computed line--strength indices for 1085 non--supergiant stars with atmospheric parameter estimates from the AMBRE project. Two samples of 312 {\it dwarfs} and of 83 {\it subgiants} with solar chemical composition and no significant $α$--element abundance enhanc…
The near-infrared (NIR) wavelength range offers some unique spectral features, and it is less prone to the extinction than the optical one. Recently, the first flux calibrated NIR library of cool stars from the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) have become available, and it has not been fully exploited yet. We want to develop spectroscopic diagnostics for stellar physical parameters based on features in the wavelength range 1-5 micron. In this work we test the technique in the I and K bands. The study of the Y, J, H, and L bands will be presented in the following paper. An objective meth…
We calculate the fundamental stellar parameters effective temperature, surface gravity and iron abundance - T$_{\rm eff}$, log g, [Fe/H] - for the final release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) Stellar Library (MaStar), containing 59,266 per-visit-spectra for 24,290 unique stars at intermediate resolution ($R\sim1800$) and high S/N (median = 96). We fit theoretical spectra from model atmospheres by both MARCS and BOSZ-ATLAS9 to the observed MaStar spectra, using the full spectral fitting code pPXF. We further employ a Bayesian approach, using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) tech…
The detection of the first exoplanet paved the way into the era of transit photometry space missions with a revolutionary photometric precision that aim at discovering new exoplanetary systems around different types of stars. With this high precision, it is possible to derive very accurately the radii of exoplanets which is crucial for constraining their type and composition. However, it requires an accurate description of host stars, especially their center-to-limb variation of intensities (so called limb darkening) as it affects the planet-to-star radius ratio determination. We aim at improv…
We present a library of 139 near-IR spectra of cool asymptotic giant branch stars that will be useful for comparison with theoretical model atmosphere calculations and for modeling the integrated emission from intermediate-age stellar populations. The source list was selected from the `extremely red' region of the INT Photometric H Alpha Survey (IPHAS) colour-colour plane that is overwhelmingly dominated by very late-type stars. The spectral library also includes a large fraction of S-type and carbon stars. We present a number of spectral classification sequences highlighting the various molec…
GALAH+ is a magnitude-limited survey of high resolution stellar spectra obtained by the HERMES spectrograph at the Australian Astronomical Observatory. Its third data release provides reduced spectra with new derivations of stellar parameters and abundances of 30 chemical elements for 584,015 dwarfs and giants, 88% of them in the Gaia magnitude range 11 < G < 14. Here we use these improved values of stellar parameters to build a library of observed spectra which is useful to study variations of individual spectral lines with stellar parameters. This and other improvements are used to derive ra…
iSpec is an integrated spectroscopic software framework suitable for the creation of spectral libraries such as the Benchmark Stars library and the determination of atmospheric parameters (i.e. effective temperature, surface gravity, metallicity) and individual chemical abundances. The framework can be used in automatic massive analysis, but it also includes a user-friendly visual interface that can easily interoperate with other astronomical applications such as TOPCAT, VOSpec and splat which provide access to the Virtual Observatory.
GALAH is a large-scale magnitude-limited southern stellar spectroscopic survey. Its second data release (GALAH DR2) provides values of stellar parameters and abundances of 23 elements for 342,682 stars (Buder et al.). Here we add a description of the public release of radial velocities with a typical accuracy of 0.1 km/s for 336,215 of these stars, achievable due to the large wavelength coverage, high resolving power and good signal to noise ratio of the observed spectra, but also because convective motions in stellar atmosphere and gravitational redshift from the star to the observer are take…
To fully harvest the rich library of stellar elemental abundance data available, we require reliable models that facilitate our interpretation of them. Galactic chemical evolution (GCE) models are one such set, and a key part of which are the selection of chemical yields from different nucleosynthetic enrichment channels, predominantly asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), and core-collapse supernovae (CC-SNe). Here, we present a scoring system for yield tables based on their ability to reproduce proto-solar abundances within a simple parametrisation of the GCE mode…
Theoretical stellar spectra rely on model stellar atmospheres computed based on our understanding of the physical laws at play in the stellar interiors. These models, coupled with atomic and molecular line databases, are used to generate theoretical stellar spectral libraries (SSLs) comprising of stellar spectra over a regular grid of atmospheric parameters (temperature, surface gravity, abundances) at any desired resolution. Another class of SSLs is referred to as empirical spectral libraries; these contain observed spectra at limited resolution. SSLs play an essential role in deriving the pr…
We present simple stellar population (SSP) models with scaled-solar and alpha-element enhanced abundances. The SSP models are based on the Dartmouth Stellar Evolution Database, our library of synthetic stellar spectra, and a detailed systematic variation of horizontal-branch (HB) morphology with age and metallicity. In order to test the relative importance of a variety of SSP model ingredients, we compare our SSP models with integrated spectra of 41 Milky Way Globular Clusters (MWGCs) from Schiavon et al. (2005). Using the Mg b and Ca4227 indices, we confirm that Mg and Ca are enhanced by abou…
Due to the ever-expanding volume of observed spectroscopic data from surveys such as SDSS and LAMOST, it has become important to apply artificial intelligence (AI) techniques for analysing stellar spectra to solve spectral classification and regression problems like the determination of stellar atmospheric parameters Teff, log g, [Fe/H]. We propose an automated approach for the classification of stellar spectra in the optical region using Convolutional Neural Networks. Traditional machine learning (ML) methods with "shallow" architecture (usually up to 2 hidden layers) have been trained for th…
