Integrated light spectroscopy from galaxies can be used to study the stellar populations that cannot be resolved into individual stars. This analysis relies on stellar population synthesis (SPS) techniques to study the formation history and structure of galaxies. However, the spectral templates available for SPS are limited, especially in the near-infrared. We present A-LIST (APOGEE Library of Infrared SSP Templates), a new set of high-resolution, near-IR SSP spectral templates spanning a wide range of ages (2-12 Gyr), metallicities ($\rm -2.2 < [M/H] < +0.4$) and $α$ abundances ($\rm -0.2 < [α/M] < +0.4$). This set of SSP templates is the highest resolution ($R\sim22500$) available in the near infrared, and the first such based on an empirical stellar library. Our models are generated using spectra of $\sim$300,000 stars spread across the Milky Way, with a wide range of metallicities and abundances, from the APOGEE survey. We show that our model spectra provide accurate fits to M31 globular cluster spectra taken with APOGEE, with best-fit metallicities agreeing with those of previous estimates to within $\sim$0.1 dex. We also compare these model spectra to lower-resolution E-MILES models and demonstrate that we recover the ages of these models to within $\sim$1.5 Gyr. This library is available in https://github.com/aishashok/ALIST-library.
We have developed a software library for chemical evolution simulations of galaxy formation under the simple stellar population (SSP) approximation. In this library, all of the necessary components concerning chemical evolution, such as initial mass functions, stellar lifetimes, yields from type II and Ia supernovae, asymptotic giant branch stars, and neutron star mergers, are compiled from the literature. Various models are pre-implemented in this library so that users can choose their favorite combination of models. Subroutines of this library return released energy and masses of individual …
The MaNGA Stellar Library (MaStar) is a large collection of high-quality empirical stellar spectra designed to cover all spectral types and ideal for use in the stellar population analysis of galaxies observed in the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey. The library contains 59,266 spectra of 24,130 unique stars with spectral resolution $R\sim1800$ and covering a wavelength range of $3,622-10,354$ Å. In this work, we derive five physical parameters for each spectrum in the library: effective temperature ($T_{eff}$), surface gravity ($\log g$), metalicity ($[Fe/H]$…
We introduce the ongoing MaStar project, which is going to construct a large, well-calibrated, high quality empirical stellar library with more than 8000 stars covering the wavelength range from 3622 to 10,354A at a resolution of R~2000, and with better than 3% relative flux calibration. The spectra are taken using hexagonal fiber bundles feeding the BOSS spectrographs on the 2.5m Sloan Foundation Telescope, by piggybacking on the SDSS-IV/APOGEE-2 observations. Compared to previous efforts of empirical libraries, the MaStar Library will have a more comprehensive stellar parameter coverage, esp…
We present simple stellar population (SSP) models with scaled-solar and alpha-element enhanced abundances. The SSP models are based on the Dartmouth Stellar Evolution Database, our library of synthetic stellar spectra, and a detailed systematic variation of horizontal-branch (HB) morphology with age and metallicity. In order to test the relative importance of a variety of SSP model ingredients, we compare our SSP models with integrated spectra of 41 Milky Way Globular Clusters (MWGCs) from Schiavon et al. (2005). Using the Mg b and Ca4227 indices, we confirm that Mg and Ca are enhanced by abou…
In order to build more realistic single stellar population (SSP) models with variable alpha-enhancement, we have recently determined [Mg/Fe] in a uniform scale with a precision of about 0.1 dex for 752 stars in the MILES empirical library. The [alpha/Fe] abundance ratio is commonly used as a good temporal scale indicator of star formation, taking Mg as a template for alpha elements. Calcium is another element whose abundance is currently being investigated for the MILES stars. The MILES library is also being expanded by around 20% by including stars with known Teff, log g, [Fe/H] and [Mg/Fe]. …
We present the first release of the MaNGA Stellar Library (MaStar), which is a large, well-calibrated, high-quality empirical library covering the wavelength range of 3,622-10,354A at a resolving power of R~1800. The spectra were obtained using the same instrument as used by the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) project, by piggybacking on the SDSS-IV/APOGEE-2N observations. Compared to previous empirical libraries, the MaStar library will have a higher number of stars and a more comprehensive stellar-parameter coverage, especially of cool dwarfs, low-metallicity star…
We introduce \cosha{}: a Code for Stellar properties Heuristic Assignment. In order to estimate the stellar properties, \cosha{} implements a Gradient Tree Boosting algorithm to label each star across the parameter space ($T_\mathrm{eff}$, $\log{g}$, $[\mathrm{Fe}/\mathrm{H}]$, and $[α/\mathrm{Fe}]$). We use \cosha{} to estimate these stellar atmospheric parameters of $22\,$k unique stars in the MaNGA Stellar Library (MaStar). To quantify the reliability of our approach, we run both internal tests using the Göttingen Stellar Library (GSL, a theoretical library) and the first data release of Ma…
To fully harvest the rich library of stellar elemental abundance data available, we require reliable models that facilitate our interpretation of them. Galactic chemical evolution (GCE) models are one such set, and a key part of which are the selection of chemical yields from different nucleosynthetic enrichment channels, predominantly asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), and core-collapse supernovae (CC-SNe). Here, we present a scoring system for yield tables based on their ability to reproduce proto-solar abundances within a simple parametrisation of the GCE mode…
We present an updated version of the semi-analytic Just-Jahreiß (JJ) model of the Galactic disk and constrain its parameters in the Solar neighbourhood. The new features of the JJ model include a simple two-component gaseous disk, a star-formation rate (SFR) function of the thick disk that has been extended in time, and a correlation between the kinematics of molecular gas and thin-disk populations. Here, we study the vertical number density profiles and W-velocity distributions determined from ~2 million local stars of the Gaia DR2. We also investigate an apparent Hess diagram of the Gaia sta…
GALAH+ is a magnitude-limited survey of high resolution stellar spectra obtained by the HERMES spectrograph at the Australian Astronomical Observatory. Its third data release provides reduced spectra with new derivations of stellar parameters and abundances of 30 chemical elements for 584,015 dwarfs and giants, 88% of them in the Gaia magnitude range 11 < G < 14. Here we use these improved values of stellar parameters to build a library of observed spectra which is useful to study variations of individual spectral lines with stellar parameters. This and other improvements are used to derive ra…
Three basic ingredients are required to generate a simple stellar population (SSP) library, i.e., an initial mass function (IMF), a stellar evolution model/isochrones, and an empirical/theoretical stellar spectral library. However, there are still some uncertainties to the determination and understanding of these ingredients. We perform the spectral fitting to test the relative parameter offsets between these uncertainties using two different stellar population models, two different empirical stellar libraries, two different isochrones, and the Salpeter and Chabrier IMFs. Based on these setups…
We calculate the fundamental stellar parameters effective temperature, surface gravity and iron abundance - T$_{\rm eff}$, log g, [Fe/H] - for the final release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) Stellar Library (MaStar), containing 59,266 per-visit-spectra for 24,290 unique stars at intermediate resolution ($R\sim1800$) and high S/N (median = 96). We fit theoretical spectra from model atmospheres by both MARCS and BOSZ-ATLAS9 to the observed MaStar spectra, using the full spectral fitting code pPXF. We further employ a Bayesian approach, using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) tech…
Using mock spectra based on Vazdekis/MILES library fitted within the wavelength region 3600-7350Å, we analyze the bias and scatter on the resulting physical parameters induced by the choice of fitting algorithms and observational uncertainties, but avoid effects of those model uncertainties. We consider two full-spectrum fitting codes: pPXF and STARLIGHT, in fitting for stellar population age, metallicity, mass-to-light ratio, and dust extinction. With pPXF we find that both the bias in the population parameters and the scatter in the recovered logarithmic values follows the expected trend. Th…
High resolution spectral models for simple stellar populations (SSP) developed in the past few years have become a standard ingredient in studies of stellar population of galaxies. As more such models become available, it becomes increasingly important to test them. In this and a companion paper, we test a suite of publicly available evolutionary synthesis models using integrated optical spectra in the blue-near-UV range of 27 well studied star clusters from the work of Leonardi & Rose (2003) spanning a wide range of ages and metallicities. Most (23) of the clusters are from the Magellanic clo…
We explore the properties of selected mid-ultraviolet (1900-3200 angstrom) spectroscopic indices of simple stellar populations (SSPs). We incorporate the high resolution UVBLUE stellar spectral library into an evolutionary population synthesis code, based on the most recent Padova isochrones. We analyze the trends of UV indices with respect to age and chemical composition. As a first test against observations, we compare our results with the empirical mid-UV spectral indices of Galactic globular clusters, observed with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE). We find that synthetic indice…
We present a stellar parameter catalog built to accompany the MaStar Stellar Library, which is a comprehensive collection of empirical, medium-resolution stellar spectra. We constructed this parameter catalog by using a multicomponent $χ^{2}$ fitting approach to match MaStar spectra to models generated by interpolating the ATLAS9-based BOSZ model spectra. The total $χ^{2}$ for a given model is defined as the sum of components constructed to characterize narrow-band features of observed spectra (e.g., absorption lines) and the broadband continuum shape separately. Extinction and systematics due…
This paper documents the sixteenth data release (DR16) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fourth and penultimate from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). This is the first release of data from the southern hemisphere survey of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2); new data from APOGEE-2 North are also included. DR16 is also notable as the final data release for the main cosmological program of the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), and all raw and reduced spectra from that project are released here. DR16 also includes all the data from the…
We present Gemini/GNIRS cross-dispersed near-infrared spectra of 12 nearby early-type galaxies, with the aim of testing commonly used stellar population synthesis models. We select a subset of galaxies from the atlas/ sample which span a wide range of ages (SSP-equivalent ages of 1--15~Gyr) at approximately solar metallicity. We derive star formation histories using four different stellar population synthesis models, namely those of [bruzual_stellar_2003], Conroy, Gunn \& White (2009; 2010), [maraston_stellar_2011] and [vazdekis_uv-extended_2016]. We compare star formation histories derived fr…
We present detailed, high spatial and spectral resolution, long-slit observations of four central cluster galaxies (Abell 0085, 0133, 0644 and Ophiuchus) recently obtained on the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). Our sample consists of central cluster galaxies (CCGs) with previously-observed Hα-filaments, and have existing data from the X-ray to radio wavelength regimes available. Here, we present the detailed optical data over a broad wavelength range to probe the spatially-resolved kinematics and stellar populations of the stars. We use the Pegase.HR model with the ELODIE v3.1 stellar…
