Recent work has used spectra of about 5000 stars in NGC 6397 that were extracted from a MUSE mosaic to determine the atmospheric parameters for these stars by fitting the spectra against the Goettingen Spectral Library. A significant change in metallicity between the turn off and the red giant branch was found and was discussed as a possible manifestation of predicted effects of atomic diffusion. However, the small amplitude of the effect and inconsistency with earlier measurements call for more attention before this result is interpreted. Systematic effects due to the interpolation or to the synthetic spectra cannot be ruled out at this level of precision. We reanalyze the data with the ELODIE and MILES reference libraries in order to assess the robustness of the result. These empirical libraries have a finer metallicity coverage down to approximately the cluster metalicity turn-off. We used the ULySS full-spectrum fitting package, together with the library interpolators to remeasure the three atmospheric parameters effective temperature, surface gravity, and [Fe/H] metallicity. We find a very low [Fe/H] dispersion along the isochrone (0.07 dex), consistent with our error estimate (0.05 dex). However, the [Fe/H] trend is not reproducible. This shows that the data have the potential to reveal patterns of the magnitude of the expected physical effects, but the analysis methods need to be refined to cull systematic effects that currently dominate the patterns.
We present new isochrone fits to colour-magnitude diagrams of the Galactic globular clusters NGC\,288, NGC\,362, and NGC\,6218 (M12). We utilize a lot of photometric bands from the ultraviolet to mid-infrared by use of data from the {\it HST}, {\it Gaia}, unWISE, Pan-STARRS, and other photometric sources. In our isochrone fitting we use theoretical models and isochrones from the Dartmouth Stellar Evolution Program and Bag of Stellar Tracks and Isochrones for $α$-enhanced abundance [$α$/Fe]$=+0.40$, different helium abundances, and a metallicity of about [Fe/H]$=-1.3$ adopted from the literatur…
We present new isochrone fits to the colour-magnitude diagrams of the Galactic globular clusters NGC\,6362 and NGC\,6723. We utilize 22 and 26 photometric filters for NGC\,6362 and NGC\,6723, respectively, from the ultraviolet to mid-infrared using data sets from {\it HST}, {\it Gaia}, unWISE, and other photometric sources. We use models and isochrones from the Dartmouth Stellar Evolution Database (DSED) and Bag of Stellar Tracks and Isochrones (BaSTI) for $α$-enhanced [$α$/Fe]$=+0.4$ and different helium abundances. The metallicities [Fe/H]$=-1.04\pm0.07$ and $-1.09\pm0.06$ are derived from t…
In this paper we apply a Bayesian technique to determine the best fit of stellar evolution models to find the main sequence turn off age and other cluster parameters of four intermediate-age open clusters: NGC 2360, NGC 2477, NGC 2660, and NGC 3960. Our algorithm utilizes a Markov chain Monte Carlo technique to fit these various parameters, objectively finding the best-fit isochrone for each cluster. The result is a high-precision isochrone fit. We compare these results with the those of traditional "by-eye" isochrone fitting methods. By applying this Bayesian technique to NGC 2360, NGC 2477, …
We present new isochrone fits to colour-magnitude diagrams of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 5904 (M5). We utilise 29 photometric bands from the ultraviolet to mid-infrared by use of the data from the {\it Hubble Space Telescope}, {\it Gaia} DR2, {\it Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer}, Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and other photometric data. In our isochrone fitting we use the PAdova and TRieste Stellar Evolution Code, the MESA Isochrones and Stellar Tracks, the Dartmouth Stellar Evolution Program, and a Bag of Stellar Tracks and Isochrones both for the solar-scaled and enhanced He a…
We present new isochrone fits to colour-magnitude diagrams of the Galactic globular cluster NGC\,6205 (M13). We utilise 34 photometric bands from the ultraviolet to mid-infrared by use of data from the {\it HST}, {\it Gaia} DR2, SDSS, unWISE, Pan-STARRS DR1, and other photometric sources. In our isochrone fitting we use the PARSEC, MIST, DSEP, BaSTI, and IAC-BaSTI theoretical models and isochrones, both for the solar-scaled and He-$α$-enhanced abundances, with a metallicity of about [Fe/H]$=-1.58$ adopted from the literature. The colour-magnitude diagrams, obtained with pairs of filters from d…

We present the first results from the GeMS/GSAOI Galactic Globular Cluster Survey (G4CS) of the Milky-Way globular clusters (GCs) NGC 3201 and NGC 2298. Using the Gemini South Adaptive Optics Imager (GSAOI), in tandem with the Gemini Multi-conjugate adaptive optics System (GeMS) on the 8.1-meter Gemini-South telescope, we collected deep near-IR observations of both clusters, resolving their constituent stellar populations down to $K_s\simeq21$ Vega mag. Point spread function (PSF) photometry was performed on the data using spatially-variable PSFs to generate $JHK_{s}$ photometric catalogues fo…
Accurately determining the age of H\,{ii} regions and the stars they host is as important as it is challenging. Historically the most popular method has been isochrone fitting to Hertzsprung-Russell Diagrams or Colour-Magnitude Diagrams. Here we introduce a different method for age determination using BPASS and hoki. We infer the most likely ages of the regions D118 and D119 NGC 300 to be log(age/years)=6.86$^{0.05}_{0.06}$ and we also deduce stellar mass and number counts by comparison with the BPASS models. We compare how our binary and single star models perform and find that the latter are…
Extended main-sequence turn-offs (eMSTO) are a commonly observed property of young clusters. A global theoretical interpretation for the eMSTOs is still lacking, but stellar rotation is considered a necessary ingredient to explain the eMSTO. We aim to assess the importance of core-boundary and envelope mixing in stellar interiors for the interpretation of eMSTOs in terms of one coeval population. We construct isochrone-clouds based on interior mixing profiles of stars with a convective core calibrated from asteroseismology of isolated galactic field stars. We fit these isochrone-clouds to the …
We re-examine the properties of the star cluster population in the circumnuclear starburst ring in the face-on spiral galaxy NGC 7742, whose young cluster mass function has been reported to exhibit significant deviations from the canonical power law. We base our reassessment on the clusters' luminosities (an observational quantity) rather than their masses (a derived quantity), and confirm conclusively that the galaxy's starburst-ring clusters---and particularly the youngest subsample, $\log(t \mbox{ yr}^{-1}) \le 7.2$---show evidence of a turnover in the cluster luminosity function well above…
We present multichromatic isochrone fits to the colour-magnitude data of the globular cluster NGC 6366, based on Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys/Wide Field Channel and Southern Astrophysical Research photometric data. We corrected the photometric data for differential reddening and calculated the mean ridge line of the colour-magnitude diagrams. We compared the isochrones of Dartmouth Stellar Evolution Database and PAdova and TRieste Stellar Evolution Code both with microscopic diffusion starting on the main sequence. Bracketing all previous determinations of this cluster, w…
We present panchromatic isochrone fits to the color magnitude data of the globular cluster NGC 6366, based on HST ACS/WFC and SOAR photometric data. Before performing the isochrone fits, we corrected the photometric data for differential reddening and calculated the mean ridge line of the color magnitude diagrams. We compared the isochrones of Dartmouth Stellar Evolution Database and PAdova and TRieste Stellar Evolution Code (with microscopic diffusion starting on the main sequence). Based on previous determinations of the metallicity of this cluster we test it from [Fe/H]=-1.00 to [Fe/H]= -0.…
JWST Imaging of the Closest Globular Clusters -- II. Discovery of Brown Dwarfs in NGC 6397 and Measurement of Age from the Brown Dwarf Cooling Sequence, using SANDee - a New Grid of Model Isochrones across the Hydrogen-Burning Limit
The open cluster (OC) NGC 2453 is of particular importance since it has been considered to host the planetary nebula (PN) NGC 2452, however their distances and radial velocities are strongly contested. In order to obtain a complete picture of the fundamental parameters of the OC NGC 2453, 11 potential members were studied. The results allowed us to resolve the PN NGC 2452 membership debate. Radial velocities for the 11 stars in NGC 2453 and the PN were measured and matched with Gaia data release 2 (DR2) to estimate the cluster distance. In addition, we used deep multi-band UBVRI photometry to …
We have derived ages for 13 young (<30 Myr) star-forming regions and find they are up to a factor two older than the ages typically adopted in the literature. This result has wide-ranging implications, including that circumstellar discs survive longer (~10-12 Myr) and that the average Class I lifetime is greater (~1 Myr) than currently believed. For each star-forming region we derived two ages from colour-magnitude diagrams. First we fitted models of the evolution between the zero-age main-sequence and terminal-age main-sequence to derive a homogeneous set of main-sequence ages, distances and …
We extend our effort to calibrate stellar isochrones in the Johnson-Cousins ($BVI_C$) and the 2MASS ($JHK_s$) filter systems based on observations of well-studied open clusters. Using cool main-sequence (MS) stars in Praesepe, we define empirical corrections to the Lejeune et al. color-effective temperature ($T_{\rm eff}$) relations down to $T_{\rm eff} \sim 3600$ K, complementing our previous work based on the Hyades and the Pleiades. We apply empirically corrected isochrones to existing optical and near-infrared photometry of cool ($T_{\rm eff} \leq 5500$ K) and metal-rich ([Fe/H]$=+0.37$) M…
The morphology and cluster membership of the Galactic open clusters - Czernik 20 and NGC 1857 were analyzed using two different clustering algorithms. We present the maiden use of density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) to determine open cluster morphology from spatial distribution. The region of analysis has also been spatially classified using a statistical membership determination algorithm. We utilized near infrared (NIR) data for a suitably large region around the clusters from the United Kingdom Infrared Deep Sky Survey Galactic Plane Survey star catalogue da…
As part of the Swift/UVOT Stars Survey, we present near-ultraviolet point-source photometry for 103 Galactic open clusters. These data, taken over the span of the mission, provide a unique and unprecedented set of near-ultraviolet point-source photometry on simple stellar populations. After applying membership analysis fueled mostly by GAIA DR2 proper motions, we find that 49 of these 103 have clear precise CMDs amenable to investigation. We compare the CMDs to theoretical isochrones and find good agreement between the theoretical isochrones and the CMDs. The exceptions are the fainter parts o…
This paper provides a detailed comparison of the differences in parameters derived for a star cluster from its color-magnitude diagrams depending on the filters and models used. We examine the consistency and reliability of fitting three widely-used stellar evolution models to fifteen combinations of optical and near-IR photometry for the old open cluster NGC 188. The optical filter response curves match those of the theoretical systems and are thus not the source of fit inconsistencies. NGC 188 is ideally suited to the present study thanks to a wide variety of high-quality photometry and avai…
We present ASteCA (Automated Stellar Cluster Analysis), a suit of tools designed to fully automatize the standard tests applied on stellar clusters to determine their basic parameters. The set of functions included in the code make use of positional and photometric data to obtain precise and objective values for a given cluster's center coordinates, radius, luminosity function and integrated color magnitude, as well as characterizing through a statistical estimator its probability of being a true physical cluster rather than a random overdensity of field stars. ASteCA incorporates a Bayesian f…
We have developed a maximum-likelihood procedure to fit theoretical isochrones to the observed cluster color-magnitude diagrams of NGC 6866, an open cluster in the Kepler Spacecraft field of view. The Markov-Chain Monte Carlo algorithm permits exploration of the entire parameter space of a set of isochrones to find both the best solution and the statistical uncertainties. For clusters in the age range of NGC 6866, with few if any red giant members, a purely photometric determination of the cluster properties is not well-constrained. Nevertheless, based on our UBVRI photometry alone, we have de…
Fluorine is a fairly good tracer of formation histories of multiple stellar populations in globular clusters as already revealed by several studies. Large variations in fluorine abundance in red giant stars of the globular cluster M22 have been recently reported by two different groups. Futhermore, one of these studies claims that the abundance of fluorine is anti-correlated with sodium abundances in this cluster, leading to strong conclusions on the chemical history of M22. To validate this important finding, we re-examine the F abundance determinations of some of the previously studied stars…
We report the results of CCD $V$, $r$ and $I$ time-series photometry of the globular cluster NGC 5053. New times of maximum light are given for the eight known RR Lyrae stars in the field of our images and their periods are revised. Their $V$ light curves were Fourier decomposed to estimate their physical parameters. A discussion on the accuracy of the Fourier-based iron abundances, temperatures, masses and radii is given. New periods are found for the 5 known SX Phe stars and a critical discussion of their secular period changes is offered. The mean iron abundance for the RR Lyrae stars is fo…
We present a simple approach for obtaining robust values of astrophysical parameters from the observed colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of star clusters. The basic inputs are the Hess diagram built with the photometric measurements of a star cluster and a set of isochrones covering wide ranges of age and metallicity. In short, each isochrone is shifted in apparent distance modulus and colour excess until it crosses over the maximum possible Hess density. Repeating this step for all available isochrones leads to the construction of the solution map, in which the optimum values of age and metall…
A recent study reported a strong apparent depression of Fe I, relative to Fe II, in the AGB stars of NGC 6752. This depression is much greater than that expected from the neglect of non-local thermodynamic equilibrium effects, in particular the dominant effect of overionisation. Here we attempt to reproduce the apparent Fe discrepancy, and investigate differences in reported sodium abundances. We compare in detail the methods and results of the recent study with those of an earlier study of NGC 6752 AGB stars. Iron and sodium abundances are derived using Fe I, Fe II, and Na I lines. Various un…
We present the list of variable stars we found in the Kepler superstamp data covering approximately 9 arcminutes from the central region of NGC 6791. We classified the variable stars based on the variability type and we established their cluster membership based on the available Gaia Early Data Release 3 astrometry, by means of the Bayesian Gaussian mixture models. In total we found 278 variable objects, among which 17 binaries, 45 pulsators, 62 rotational and five unclassified variables are cluster members. The remaining 28 binaries, 25 pulsators, 83 rotational, four unclassified and nine uni…
We present the results of a deep, wide-field CCD survey for the open cluster NGC~3532. Our new $BV(RI)_{c}$ photometry effectively covers a one square degree area and reaches an unprecedented depth of $V\sim21$ to reveal that NGC~3532 is a rich open cluster that harbors a large number of faint, low-mass stars. We employ a number of methods to reduce the impact of field star contamination in the cluster color-magnitude diagrams, including supplementing our photometry with $JHK_{s}$ data from the 2MASS catalog. These efforts allow us to define a robust sample of candidate main sequence stars sui…
Galactic open clusters (OCs) that survive the early gas-expulsion phase are gradually destroyed over time by the action of disruptive dynamical processes. Their final evolutionary stages are characterized by a poorly populated concentration of stars called open cluster remnant (OCR). This study is devoted to assess the real physical nature of the OCR candidate NGC 7193. GMOS/Gemini spectroscopy of 53 stars in the inner target region were obtained to derive radial velocities and atmospheric parameters. We also employed photometric and proper motion data. The analysis method consists of the foll…
We have calculated the physical parameters of the RR Lyrae stars in the globular cluster NGC~4147 via the Fourier decomposition of their light curves, using new data and well-established semi-empirical calibrations and zero points. The mean metallicity and distance estimated using the RRc stars are [Fe/H]$_{ZW}=-1.72\pm0.15$ and $19.05\pm0.46$ kpc respectively. The star V18, whose variability has been previously in dispute, is confirmed to be a variable of the SR type with a period of about 24.8d, and it has been used to get and independent distance estimate of the cluster. It is observed that…
We used the newly commissioned 50 cm Binocular Network (50BiN) telescope at Qinghai Station of Purple Mountain Observatory (Chinese Academy of Sciences) to observe the old open cluster NGC 188 in V and R as part of a search for variable objects. Our time-series data span a total of 36 days. Radial velocity and proper-motion selection resulted in a sample of 532 genuine cluster members. Isochrone fitting was applied to the cleaned cluster sequence, yielding a distance modulus of (m - M)0V = 11.35 \pm 0.10 mag and a total foreground reddening of E(V - R) = 0.062 \pm 0.002 mag. Light-curve soluti…
Following the recent discovery of a large population of young stars in front of the Orion Nebula, we carried out an observational campaign with the DECam wide-field camera covering ~10~deg^2 centered on NGC 1980 to confirm, probe the extent of, and characterize this foreground population of pre-main-sequence stars. We confirm the presence of a large foreground population towards the Orion A cloud. This population contains several distinct subgroups, including NGC1980 and NGC1981, and stretches across several degrees in front of the Orion A cloud. By comparing the location of their sequence in …
We present the results of ultraviolet (UV) photometry of the old open cluster M67 obtained using Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) in far-ultraviolet (FUV) and near-ultraviolet (NUV) bands. UV detections of 18 blue straggler stars (BSSs), 3 white dwarfs (WDs), 4 yellow straggler stars, 2 sub-subgiants, and 25 X-ray sources are presented (along with an online catalog). We demonstrate the capability of UV colour magnitude diagrams (CMDs) along with the UV isochrones to identify potential stars which defy standard stellar evolution in this well studied cluster. We also detect a few main sequence …
The stellar contents of the open clusters King 12, NGC 7788, and NGC 7790 are investigated using MegaCam images. Comparisons with isochrones yield an age < 20 Myr for King 12, 20--40 Myr for NGC 7788, and 60 -- 80 Myr for NGC 7790 based on the properties of stars near the main sequence turn-off (MSTO) in each cluster. The reddening of NGC 7788 is much larger than previously estimated. The luminosity functions (LFs) of King 12 and NGC 7788 show breaks that are attributed to the onset of pre-main sequence (PMS) objects, and comparisons with models of PMS evolution yield ages that are consistent …
We present detailed photometric observations of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 7492 using the data obtained with two far-ultraviolet (FUV: 1300 - 1800 Å) and three near-ultraviolet (NUV: 2000 - 3000 Å) filters of Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) on-board the \textit{AstroSat} satellite. We confirmed the cluster membership of the extracted sources using GAIA data release 2 (Gaia DR2) proper motion data. We have used color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) using UVIT and GAIA filters to separate out different evolutionary stages of the stars present in the cluster. We have identified a new extrem…
We present VI-band photometry for stars in the metal-rich globular cluster NGC 6496. Our time-series data were cadenced to search for long period variables (LPVs) over a span of nearly two years, and our variability search yielded the discovery of thirteen new variable stars, of which six are LPVs, two are suspected LPVs, and five are short period eclipsing binaries. An additional star was found in the ASAS database, and we clarify its type and period. We argue that all of the eclipsing binaries are field stars, while 5-6 of the LPVs are members of NGC 6496. We compare the period-luminosity di…

Using high-resolution data sets obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope, we investigate the radial distributions of the F-type main-sequence binary fractions in the massive young Large Magellanic Cloud star clusters NGC 1805 and NGC 1818. We apply both an isochrone-fitting approach and chi^2 minimization using Monte Carlo simulations, for different mass-ratio cut-offs, q, and present a detailed comparison of the methods' performance. Both methods yield the same radial binary fraction profile for the same cluster, which therefore supports the robustness and applicability of either method to yo…
We present $UBVRI$ photometry of 8702 stars in a $0.5 ^\circ\times0.5 ^\circ$ field in the direction of NGC 7142, taken with the Half Degree Imager (HDI) at the WIYN 0.9-meter telescope, to improve knowledge of this cluster's basic parameters. Our photometry spans the ranges 10.6 - 20.4 mag in $U$, 10.6 - 22.0 mag in $B$, 10.0 - 21.8 mag in $V$, 9.2 - 20.7 mag in $R$, and 8.5 - 19.9 mag in $I$. Using color-color diagrams that employ all four color combinations that include $U$, versus $B-V$, we derive a reddening-metallicity relation for the cluster, with preferred values $E(B-V$) = 0.338 $\pm…
The basic physical parameters of a poorly studied open cluster NGC 110 and an unstudied open cluster DOLIDZE 14 are estimated in the present study using the archival PPMXL and WISE catalogues. The radius of both the clusters are estimated by fitting the modified King's empirical model on their stellar density profiles. The other basic parameters of the clusters such as distance, reddening, and age are obtained by visual fitting of the Marigo's solar metallicity isochrone on their IR colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs). The mean-proper motion of the clusters are estimated through the individual pr…
(Abridged) The chemical behaviour of an ample sample of PNe in NGC6822 is analyzed. Spectrophotometric data of 11 PNe and two H II regions were obtained with the OSIRIS spectrograph attached to the Gran Telescopio Canarias. Data for other 13 PNe and three H II regions were retrieved from the literature. Physical conditions and chemical abundances of O, N, Ne, Ar and S were derived for 19 PNe and 4 H II regions. Abundances in the PNe sample are widely distributed showing 12+log(O/H) from 7.4 to 8.2 and 12+log(Ar/H) from 4.97 to 5.80. Two groups of PNe can be differentiated: one old, with low me…
High-precision multi-band HST photometry reveals that the main sequence (MS) of the globular cluster NGC 6397 splits into two components, containing ~30% and ~70% of the stars. This double sequence is consistent with the idea that the cluster hosts two stellar populations: (i) a primordial population that has a composition similar to field stars, and containing ~30% of the stars, and (ii) a second generation with enhanced sodium and nitrogen, depleted carbon and oxygen, and a slightly enhanced helium abundance (Delta Y~0.01). We examine the color difference between the two sequences across a v…
We present the results obtained from the UV photometry of the globular cluster NGC 1261 using Far-UV (FUV) and Near-UV (NUV) images acquired with the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) onboard the Astrosat satellite. We utilized the UVIT data combined with HST, GAIA, and ground-based optical photometric data to construct the different UV colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs). We detected blue HB (BHB), and two extreme HB (EHB) stars in FUV, whereas full HB, i.e., red HB (RHB), BHB as well as EHB is detected in NUV CMDs. The 2 EHB stars, identified in both NUV and FUV, are confirmed members of the…
We present results of a CCD variability search in the field of the young open cluster NGC 6834. We discover 15 stars to be variable in light. The brightest, a multiperiodic Gamma Doradus-type variable is a foreground star. The eight fainter ones, including a Gamma Cassiopeiae-type variable, two Lambda Eridani-type variables, an ellipsoidal variable, an EB-type eclipsing binary, and three variable stars we could not classify, all have E(B-V) within proper range, thus fulfilling the necessary condition to be members. One of the three unclassified variables may be a non-member on account of its l…
Aims: Our aim is to obtain ages that are as accurate as possible for the seven nearby open clusters alpha Per, Coma Ber, IC 2602, NGC 2232, NGC 2451A, NGC 2516, and NGC 6475, each of which contains at least one magnetic Ap or Bp star. Simultaneously, we test the current calibrations of Te and luminosity for the Ap/Bp star members, and identify clearly blue stragglers in the clusters studied. Methods: We explore the possibility that isochrone fitting in the theoretical Hertzsprung-Russell diagram (i.e. log (L/L&sun;) vs. log Te), rather than in the conventional colour-magnitude diagram, can pro…
