The properties of molecular clouds associated with 10 HII regions were studied using CO observations. We identified 142 dense clumps within our sample and found that our sources are divided into two categories: those with clumps that show a power law size-line width relation (Type I) and those which do not show any relation (Type II). The clumps in the Type I sources have larger power law indices than found in previous studies. The clumps in the Type II sources have larger line widths and show evidence (such as outflows) of current active star formation within the clump. We suggest that the lack of a size-line width relation is a sign of current active star formation. Massive clumps seem to have similar masses calculated by different methods but lower mass clumps have larger virial masses compared to velocity integrated and LTE mass. We found no relation between mass distribution of the clumps and distance from the H~II region ionization front, but a weak decrease of the excitation temperature with increasing distance from the ionized gas. The clumps in collected shells around the H~II regions have slightly larger line widths but no relation was found between line width and distance from the H~II region, which probably indicates that the internal dynamics of the clumps are not affected by the ionized gas. Internal sources of turbulence, such as outflows and stellar winds from young proto-stars may have a more important role on the molecular gas dynamics. We suggest that large line width and larger size-line width power law indices are therefore the initial characteristics of clumps in massive star forming clouds and that some may evolve into objects similar to our Type II sources, where local "second generation" stars are forming and eliminating the size-line-width relation.
ATOMS: ALMA three-millimeter observations of massive star-forming regions -- XVIII. On the origin and evolution of dense gas fragments in molecular shells of compact HII regions
The study of hyper-compact (HC) or ultra-compact (UC) HII regions is fundamental to understanding the process of massive (> 8 M_sun) star formation. We employed Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) 1.4 mm Cycle 6 observations to investigate at high angular resolution (~0.050", corresponding to 330 au) the HC HII region inside molecular core A1 of the high-mass star-forming cluster G24.78+0.08. We used the H30alpha emission and different molecular lines of CH3CN and 13CH3CN to study the kinematics of the ionized and molecular gas, respectively. At the center of the HC HII region,…
We present a detailed characterization of the population of compact radio-continuum sources in W51 A using subarcsecond VLA and ALMA observations. We analyzed their 2-cm continuum, the recombination lines (RL's) H77$α$ and H30$α$, and the lines of $\rm H_{2}CO(3_{0,3}-2_{0,2})$, $\rm H_{2}CO(3_{2,1}-2_{2,0})$, and $\rm SO(6_{5}-5_{4})$. We derive diameters for 10/20 sources in the range $D \sim 10^{-3}$ to $\sim 10^{-2}$ pc, thus placing them in the regime of hypercompact HII regions (HC HII's). Their continuum-derived electron densities are in the range $n_{\rm e} \sim 10^4$ to $10^5$ cm$^{-3…
We have identified 453 compact dense cores in 3 mm continuum emission maps in the ATOMS (ALMA Three-millimeter Observations of Massive Star-forming regions) survey, and compiled three catalogues of high-mass star forming cores. One catalogue, referred to as H/UC-HII catalogue, includes 89 cores that enshroud hyper/ultra compact (H/UC) HII regions as characterized by associated compact H40alpha emission. A second catalogue, referred to as pure s-cHMC, includes 32 candidate Hot Molecular Cores (HMCs) showing rich spectra (N>20lines) of complex organic molecules (COMs) but not associated with H/U…
NGC 7538 IRS2 is a compact HII region and recent star formation source, with a shell morphology, lying on the border of the visible HII region NGC 7538. We present a spectral cube of the [NeII] 12.8 micron emission line obtained with the TEXES spectrometer on Gemini North with velocity resolution approximately 4 km/s and angular resolution 0.3". The kinematics of the data cube show ionized gas flowing along multiple cavity walls. We have simulated the kinematics and structure of IRS2 with a model of superimposed cavities created by outflows from embedded stars in a cloud with density gradients…
We investigated the star formation activities in the AFGL333 region, which is in the vicinity of the W4 expanding bubble, by conducting NH3 (1,1), (2,2), and (3,3) mapping observations with the 45 m Nobeyama Radio Telescope at an angular resolution of 75". The morphology of the NH3 (1,1) map shows a bow-shape structure with the size of 2.0 x 0.6 pc as seen in the dust continuum. At the interface between the W4 bubble and the dense NH3 cloud, the compact HII region G134.2+0.8, associated with IRAS02245+6115, is located. Interestingly, just north and south of G134.2+0.8 we found NH3 emission exh…
We presented a multi-wavelength study of AFGL 333-Ridge. The molecular line data reveals that the AFGL 333-Ridge has two independent velocity components at -50.5 km/s and -48.0 km/s. In the Position-Velocity diagram, the bridge feature connects with two parts that are spatially correlated but separated in velocity. These observational evidences support the scenario that the two velocity components have collided and merged into one molecular cloud. The majority of Class I YSOs are distributed within the collision region, suggesting that the cloud-cloud collision has induced the YSOs formation i…

Low mass star formation and subclustering in the HII regions RCW 32, 33 and 27 of the Vela Molecular Ridge. A photometric diagnostics to identify M-type stars
Atomic ionised regions with strong continuum emission are often associated with regions of high-mass star formation and low-frequency (<2GHz) observations of these regions are needed to help build star formation models. The region toward the Vela Supernova Remnant is particularly interesting as it is a complex structure of recent supernova explosions and molecular clouds containing a number of HII regions that are not well characterised. We searched publicly available catalogues for HII regions, both candidate and identified, which also have low-frequency emission. In the area of ~400 square d…
Multi-epoch narrow-band HST images of the bipolar Hii region Sh2-106 reveal highly supersonic nebular proper motions which increase with projected distance from the massive young stellar object S106~IR, reaching over ~30 mas/year (~150 km/s at D=1.09 kpc) at a projected separation of ~1.4' (0.44 pc) from S106~IR. We propose that S106~IR experienced a $\sim10^{47}$ erg explosion ~3,500 years ago. The explosion may be the result of a major accretion burst, a recent encounter with another star, or a consequence of the interaction of a companion with the bloated photosphere of S106~IR as it grew f…
The Karl Jansky Very Large Array (VLA), Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO), Atacama Large Millimetric Array (ALMA), and the infrared \textit{Spitzer} observatories, are powerful facilities to study massive star formation regions and related objects such as ultra--compact (UC) \hii regions, molecular clumps, and cores. We used these telescopes to study the \uchiir G43.89--0.78. The morphological study at arcminute scales using NVSS and \textit{Spitzer} data shows that this region is similar to those observed in the \textit{ bubble--like} structures revealed by \textit{Spitzer} observations. …
