The capacity region of the 2-user multi-input multi-output (MIMO) Gaussian interference channel (IC) is characterized to within a constant gap that is independent of the channel matrices for the general case of the MIMO IC with an arbitrary number of antennas at each node. An achievable rate region and an outer bound to the capacity region of a class of interference channels were obtained in previous work by Telatar and Tse as unions over all possible input distributions. In contrast to that previous work on the MIMO IC, a simple and an explicit achievable coding scheme are obtained here and shown to have the constant-gap-to-capacity property and in which the sub-rates of the common and private messages of each user are explicitly specified for each achievable rate pair. The constant-gap-to-capacity results are thus proved in this work by first establishing explicit upper and lower bounds to the capacity region. A reciprocity result is also proved which is that the capacity of the reciprocal MIMO IC is within a constant gap of the capacity region of the forward MIMO IC.
One challenge for FDD massive MIMO communication system is how to obtain the downlink channel state information (CSI) at the base station. Except for traditional codebook feedback through uplink pilot transmission, some channel reciprocity properties can be utilized through uplink channel estimation and channel parameter estimation algorithms. In this paper, the uplink and downlink channel reciprocity properties are analyzed. It is theoretically proved that not all multipath parameters for FDD downlink and uplink channels are equivalent. Therefore, the so called full reciprocity property does …
Time-division-duplexing massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems estimate the channel state information (CSI) by leveraging the uplink-downlink channel reciprocity, which is no longer valid when the mismatch arises from the asymmetric uplink and downlink radio frequency (RF) chains. Existing works treat the reciprocity mismatch as constant for simplicity. However, the practical RF chain consists of nonlinear components, which leads to nonlinear reciprocity mismatch. In this work, we examine the impact and the calibration approach of the nonlinear reciprocity mismatch in massive MI…
Channel reciprocity in time-division duplexing (TDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems can be exploited to reduce the overhead required for the acquisition of channel state information (CSI). However, perfect reciprocity is unrealistic in practical systems due to random radio-frequency (RF) circuit mismatches in uplink and downlink channels. This can result in a significant degradation in the performance of linear precoding schemes, which are sensitive to the accuracy of the CSI. In this paper, we model and analyse the impact of RF mismatches on the performance of linear pr…
Time-division duplex (TDD) based massive MIMO systems rely on the reciprocity of the wireless propagation channels when calculating the downlink precoders based on uplink pilots. However, the effective uplink and downlink channels incorporating the analog radio front-ends of the base station (BS) and user equipments (UEs) exhibit non-reciprocity due to non-identical behavior of the individual transmit and receive chains. When downlink precoder is not aware of such channel non-reciprocity (NRC), system performance can be significantly degraded due to NRC induced interference terms. In this work…
Hybrid analog-digital (AD) beamforming structure is a very attractive solution to build low cost massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Typically these systems use a set of fixed beams for transmission and reception to avoid the need to obtain channel state information at transmitter (CSIT) for each antenna element individually. However, such a method can not fully exploit the potential of hybrid AD beamforming systems. Alternatively, CSIT can be estimated by assuming a model for the propagation channel, whereas this model is only validated in millimeter-wave (mmWave) band than…
Obtaining down link (DL) channel state information (CSI) at the base station (BS) is challenging for frequencydivision-duplex (FDD) massive MIMO (MM) systems. Considerable overhead is required for DL training and feedback. Instead studies often assume highly correlated average spatial signal signatures (i.e. directional clusters) between FDD duplex links. These assumptions, however, only represent use of antennas with the same radiation pattern over the duplex band, leading to illumination of the same cluster. In this paper, we investigate pattern reciprocity, over the duplex band, for practic…
Downlink coherent multiuser transmission is an essential technique for cell-free massive multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) systems, and the availability of channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter is a basic requirement. To avoid CSI feedback in a time-division duplex system, the uplink channel parameters should be calibrated to obtain the downlink CSI due to the radio frequency circuit mismatch of the transceiver. In this paper, a design of a reference signal for over-the-air reciprocity calibration is proposed. The frequency domain generated reference signals can make full use …
Reciprocity-based time-division duplex (TDD) Massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) systems utilize channel estimates obtained in the uplink to perform precoding in the downlink. However, this method has been criticized of breaking down, in the sense that the channel estimates are not good enough to spatially separate multiple user terminals, at low uplink reference signal signal-to-noise ratios, due to insufficient channel estimation quality. Instead, codebook-based downlink precoding has been advocated for as an alternative solution in order to bypass this problem. We analyze this pro…
Backscatter communication (BSC) technology can enable ubiquitous deployment of low-cost sustainable wireless devices. In this work we investigate the efficacy of a full-duplex multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) reader for enhancing the limited communication range of monostatic BSC systems. As this performance is strongly influenced by the channel estimation (CE) quality, we first derive a novel least-squares estimator for the forward and backward links between the reader and the tag, assuming that reciprocity holds and K orthogonal pilots are transmitted from the first K antennas of an N an…
In order to unlock the full advantages of massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) in the downlink, channel state information (CSI) is required at the base station (BS) to optimize the beamforming matrices. In frequency division duplex (FDD) systems, full channel reciprocity does not hold, and CSI acquisition generally requires downlink pilot transmission followed by uplink feedback. Prior work proposed the end-to-end design of pilot transmission, feedback, and CSI estimation via deep learning. In this work, we introduce an enhanced end-to-end design that leverages partial uplink-downlink…
The acquisition of channel state information (CSI) in Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) massive MIMO has been a formidable challenge. In this paper, we address this problem with a novel CSI feedback framework enabled by the partial reciprocity of uplink and downlink channels in the wideband regime. We first derive the closed-form expression of the rank of the wideband massive MIMO channel covariance matrix for a given angle-delay distribution. A low-rankness property is identified, which generalizes the well-known result of the narrow-band uniform linear array setting. Then we propose a partial …
Large-scale distributed Multiuser MIMO (MU-MIMO) is a promising wireless network architecture that combines the advantages of "massive MIMO" and "small cells." It consists of several Access Points (APs) connected to a central server via a wired backhaul network and acting as a large distributed antenna system. We focus on the downlink, which is both more demanding in terms of traffic and more challenging in terms of implementation than the uplink. In order to enable multiuser joint precoding of the downlink signals, channel state information at the transmitter side is required. We consider Tim…
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is believed to deliver unrepresented spectral efficiency gains for 5G and beyond. However, a practical challenge arises during its commercial deployment, which is known as the ``curse of mobility''. The performance of massive MIMO drops alarmingly when the velocity level of user increases. In this paper, we tackle the problem in frequency division duplex (FDD) massive MIMO with a novel Channel State Information (CSI) acquisition framework. A joint angle-delay-Doppler (JADD) wideband precoder is proposed for channel training. Our idea consists in th…
Canonical Massive MIMO uses time division duplex (TDD) to exploit channel reciprocity within the coherence time, avoiding feedback of channel state information (CSI), as is required for precoding at the base station. We extend the idea of exploiting reciprocity to the coherence bandwidth, allocating subcarriers of a multicarrier (OFDM)-based system in an interlaced fashion to up- and downlink, respectively, referred to as (OFDM-)subcarrier interlaced FDD (IFDD). Exploiting this "two-dimensional" channel reciprocity within both time and frequency coherence does not require any CSI feedback and,…
This paper analyzes the performance of linearly precoded time division duplex based multi-user massive MIMO downlink system under joint impacts of channel non-reciprocity (NRC) and imperfect channel state information (CSI). We consider a generic and realistic NRC model that accounts for transceiver frequency-response as well as mutual coupling mismatches at both user equipment (UE) and base station (BS) sides. The analysis covers two most prominent forms of linear precoding schemes, namely, zero-forcing (ZF) and maximum-ratio transmission (MRT), and assumes that only the statistical properties…
This paper presents a mutual coupling based calibration method for time-division-duplex massive MIMO systems, which enables downlink precoding based on uplink channel estimates. The entire calibration procedure is carried out solely at the base station (BS) side by sounding all BS antenna pairs. An Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm is derived, which processes the measured channels in order to estimate calibration coefficients. The EM algorithm outperforms current state-of-the-art narrow-band calibration schemes in a mean squared error (MSE) and sum-rate capacity sense. Like its predecess…
In this paper, we propose a new channel estimation scheme for TDD/FDD massive MIMO systems by reconstructing uplink/downlink channel covariance matrices (CCMs) with the aid of array signal processing techniques. Specifically, the angle information and power angular spectrum (PAS) of each multi-path channel is extracted from the instantaneous uplink channel state information (CSI). Then, the uplink CCM is reconstructed and can be used to improve the uplink channel estimation without any additional training cost. In virtue of angle reciprocity as well as PAS reciprocity between uplink and downli…

In this paper, we propose low complexity opportunistic methods for interference alignment in $K$-transmitter MIMO interference channels by exploiting multiuser diversity. We do not assume availability of channel state information (CSI) at the transmitters. Receivers are required to feed back analog values indicating the extent to which the received interference subspaces are aligned. The proposed opportunistic interference alignment (OIA) achieves sum-rate comparable to conventional OIA schemes but with a significantly reduced computational complexity.
This paper deals with the calibration of Time Division Duplexing (TDD) reciprocity in an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) based Cell Free Massive MIMO system where the responses of the (Radio Frequency) RF chains render the end to end channel non-reciprocal, even though the physical wireless channel is reciprocal. We further address the non-availability of the uplink channel estimates at locations other than pilot subcarriers and propose a single-shot solution to estimate the downlink channel at all subcarriers from the uplink channel at selected pilot subcarriers. We propose …
MIMO Interference Alignment in Random Access Networks
This paper investigates an error covariance matrix splitting technique for multiuser multiple input and multiple output (MIMO) interference downlink channel. Most of the related work has thus far considered the traditional error covariance matrix which has not been well-shaped for maximizing the system capacity. Thus, we split and propose a new iterative error covariance matrix to mitigate the system error and maximize the system capacity in this paper. Numerical results illustrate that our proposed method is strictly better than the traditional method.
The degrees of freedom (DoF) of the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Interference Broadcast Channel (IBC) with 2 cells and 2 users per cell are investigated when only delayed channel state information is available at the transmitter side (delayed CSIT). Retrospective Interference Alignment has shown the benefits in terms of DoF of exploiting delayed CSIT for interference, broadcast and also for the IBC. However, previous works studying the IBC with delayed CSIT do not exploit the fact that the users of each cell are served by a common transmitter. This work presents a four-phase precoding…
Interference alignment (IA) has recently emerged as a promising interference mitigation technique for interference networks. In this letter, we focus on the IA non-iterative transceiver design problem in a multiple-input-multiple-output interfering broadcast channel (MIMO-IBC), and observed that there is previously unexploited flexibility in different permutations of user ordering. By choosing a good user ordering for a pre-determined IA inter-channel-interference allocation, an improved transceiver design can be accomplished. In order to achieve a more practical performance-complexity tradeof…
The ergodic spectral efficiency (SE) in interference-limited multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) downlink cellular systems is characterized based on stochastic geometry. A single user is served by using singular value decomposition precoding and combining. By approximating the expectations of the channel eigenvalues, we derive upper and lower bounds on the ergodic SE. The obtained upper bound is the best possible system-level performance of any MIMO strategy in non-cooperative cellular networks. We validate our analytical results through simulation. We also conjecture that there exists the o…
In this research paper approximate mean of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) under imperfect channel state information (CSI) is computed and maximized for throughput enhancement of MIMO interference networks. Each transmitter and receiver has respectively M and N antennas and network operates in a time division duplex mode. Each transceiver adjusts its filter to maximize the expected value of SINR. The proposed New Approach for Throughput Enhancement under imperfect CSI utilizes the reciprocity of wireless networks to maximize the estimated mean. The sum rate performance of the pr…
In this paper, delay constrained performance of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system in a dense environment with co-channel interference is investigated. We apply orthogonal space-time block coding (OSTBC) at the transmitter, and for alleviating the high complexity and cost of the MIMO system, receive antenna selection (RAS) scheme is employed in the downlink. Here, for simple and cheap mobile handsets, one antenna is chosen at the receiver in each utilization of the channel. Under these assumptions, a maximum constant arrival rate with the delay quality-of-service (QoS…
This paper proposes a new transmission strategy for the multiuser massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, including uplink/downlink channel estimation and user scheduling for data transmission. A discrete Fourier transform (DFT) aided spatial basis expansion model (SBEM) is first introduced to represent the uplink/downlink channels with much few parameter dimensions by exploiting angle reciprocity and the physical characteristics of the uniform linear array (ULA). With SBEM, both uplink and downlink channel estimation of multiuser can be carried out with very few amount of train…
This paper proposes a linear interference alignment (IA) scheme which can be used for uplink channels in a general multicell multiuser MIMO cellular network. The proposed scheme aims to align interference caused by signals from a set of transmitters into a subspace which is established by the signals from only a subset of those transmitters, thereby effectively reducing the number of interfering transmitters. The total degrees of freedom (DoF) achievable by the proposed scheme is given in closed-form expression, and a numerical analysis shows that the proposed scheme can achieve the optimal Do…
Spectrum sharing between radars and cellular systems is an emerging area of research. In this paper, we model channel between a seaborne MIMO radar and MIMO cellular system. We model a 2D channel to capture the azimuth aspect of the spectrum sharing scenario. Our channel modeling methodology allows MIMO radar to place accurate nulls in the azimuth location of base stations (BS), thus, protecting them from harmful radar interference. We use a projection based approach, where radar waveform is projected onto null space of channel, for mitigating radar interference to BSs. This is also known as a…
MIMO interference network optimization is important for increasingly crowded wireless communication networks. We provide a new algorithm, named Dual Link algorithm, for the classic problem of weighted sum-rate maximization for MIMO multiaccess channels (MAC), broadcast channels (BC), and general MIMO interference channels with Gaussian input and a total power constraint. For MIMO MAC/BC, the algorithm finds optimal signals to achieve the capacity region boundary. For interference channels with Gaussian input assumption, two of the previous state-of-the-art algorithms are the WMMSE algorithm an…
In this paper, considering multiple interference regions simultaneously, an optimal antenna deployment problem for distributed Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) radar is investigated. The optimal antenna deployment problem is solved by proposing an antenna deployment method based on Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO). Firstly, we construct a multi-objective optimization problem for MIMO radar antenna deployment by choosing the interference power densities of different regions as objective functions. Then, to obtain the optimal deployment result without wasting time and computati…
