We provide innerbound and outerbound for the total number of degrees of freedom of the $K$ user multiple input multiple output (MIMO) Gaussian interference channel with $M$ antennas at each transmitter and $N$ antennas at each receiver if the channel coefficients are time-varying and drawn from a continuous distribution. The bounds are tight when the ratio $\frac{\max(M,N)}{\min(M,N)}=R$ is equal to an integer. For this case, we show that the total number of degrees of freedom is equal to $\min(M,N)K$ if $K \leq R$ and $\min(M,N)\frac{R}{R+1}K$ if $K > R$. Achievability is based on interference alignment. We also provide examples where using interference alignment combined with zero forcing can achieve more degrees of freedom than merely zero forcing for some MIMO interference channels with constant channel coefficients.
The capacity regions of multiple-input multiple-output Gaussian Z-interference channels are established for the very strong interference and aligned strong interference cases. The sum-rate capacity of such channels is established under noisy interference. These results generalize known results for scalar Gaussian Z-interference channels.
The capacity region of a multiple-input-multiple-output interference channel (MIMO IC) where the channel matrices are square and invertible is studied. The capacity region for strong interference is established where the definition of strong interference parallels that of scalar channels. Moreover, the sum-rate capacity for Z interference, noisy interference, and mixed interference is established. These results generalize known results for the scalar Gaussian IC.
In this paper, we study the effect of feedback on two-user MIMO interference channels. The capacity region of MIMO interference channels with feedback is characterized within a constant number of bits, where this constant is independent of the channel matrices. Further, it is shown that the capacity region of a MIMO interference channel with feedback and its reciprocal interference channel are within a constant number of bits. Finally, the generalized degrees of freedom region for the MIMO interference channel with feedback is characterized.
Interference alignment in the K-user MIMO interference channel with constant channel coefficients is considered. A novel constructive method for finding the interference alignment solution is proposed for the case where the number of transmit antennas equals the number of receive antennas (NT = NR = N), the number of transmitter-receiver pairs equals K = N + 1, and all interference alignment multiplexing gains are one. The core of the method consists of solving an eigenvalue problem that incorporates the channel matrices of all interfering links. This procedure provides insight into the feasib…
In this paper, we propose low complexity opportunistic methods for interference alignment in $K$-transmitter MIMO interference channels by exploiting multiuser diversity. We do not assume availability of channel state information (CSI) at the transmitters. Receivers are required to feed back analog values indicating the extent to which the received interference subspaces are aligned. The proposed opportunistic interference alignment (OIA) achieves sum-rate comparable to conventional OIA schemes but with a significantly reduced computational complexity.
Recent works on MIMO interference channels have shown that interference alignment can significantly increase the achievable degrees of freedom (DoF) of the network. However, most of these works have assumed a fully connected interference graph. In this paper, we investigate how the partial connectivity can be exploited to enhance system performance in MIMO interference networks. We propose a novel interference mitigation scheme which introduces constraints for the signal subspaces of the precoders and decorrelators to mitigate "many" interference nulling constraints at a cost of "little" freed…
We consider interference alignment (IA) over K-user Gaussian MIMO interference channel (MIMO-IC) when the SNR is not asymptotically high. We introduce a generalization of IA which enables receive diversity inside the interference-free subspace. We generalize the existence criterion of an IA solution proposed by Yetis et al. to this case, thereby establishing a multi-user diversity-multiplexing trade-off (DMT) for the interference channel. Furthermore, we derive a closed-form tight lower-bound for the ergodic mutual information achievable using IA over a Gaussian MIMO-IC with Gaussian i.i.d. ch…
In this paper, we analyze the feasibility of linear interference alignment (IA) for multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) interference broadcast channel (MIMO-IBC) with constant coefficients. We pose and prove the necessary conditions of linear IA feasibility for general MIMO-IBC. Except for the proper condition, we find another necessary condition to ensure a kind of irreducible interference to be eliminated. We then prove the necessary and sufficient conditions for a special class of MIMO-IBC, where the numbers of antennas are divisible by the number of data streams per user. Since finding an inve…
MIMO Z Channel is investigated in this paper. We focus on how to tackle the interference when different users try to send their codewords to their corresponding receivers while only one user will cause interference to the other. We assume there are two transmitters and two receivers each with two antennas. We propose a strategy to remove the interference while allowing different users transmit at the same time. Our strategy is low-complexity while the performance is good. Mathematical analysis is provided and simulations are given based on our system.
Determining the feasibility conditions for vector space interference alignment in the K-user MIMO interference channel with constant channel coefficients has attracted much recent attention yet remains unsolved. The main result of this paper is restricted to the symmetric square case where all transmitters and receivers have N antennas, and each user desires d transmit dimensions. We prove that alignment is possible if and only if the number of antennas satisfies N>= d(K+1)/2. We also show a necessary condition for feasibility of alignment with arbitrary system parameters. An algebraic geometr…
This paper studies two-user MIMO interference channel with isotropic fading. We assume that users are equipped with arbitrary number of antennas and the channel state information (CSI) is available at receivers only. An outer bound is obtained for the degree of freedom region, which suggests the loss of degrees of freedom due to the lack of CSI at transmitters under many circumstances.
In this paper, we analyze a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference channel where nodes are randomly distributed on a plane as a spatial Poisson cluster point process. Each cluster uses interference alignment (IA) to suppress intra-cluster interference but unlike most work on IA, we do not neglect inter-cluster interference. We also connect the accuracy of channel state information to the distance between the nodes, i.e. the quality of CSI degrades with increasing distance. Accounting for the training and feedback overhead, we derive the transmission capacity of this MIMO IA ad hoc …
The degrees of freedom (DoF) of the 3-user multiple input multiple output interference channel (3-user MIMO IC) are investigated where there is delayed channel state information at the transmitters (dCSIT). We generalize the ideas of Maleki et al. about {\it Retrospective Interference Alignment (RIA)} to be applied to the MIMO IC, where transmitters and receivers are equipped with $(M,N)$ antennas, respectively. We propose a two-phase transmission scheme where the number of slots per phase and number of transmitted symbols are optimized by solving a maximization problem. Finally, we review the…
We explore the available degrees of freedom for various multiuser MIMO communication scenarios such as the multiple access, broadcast, interference, relay, X and Z channels. For the two user MIMO interference channel, we find a general inner bound and a genie-aided outer bound that give us the exact number of degrees of freedom in many cases. We also study a share-and-transmit scheme for transmitter cooperation. For the share-and-transmit scheme, we show how the gains of transmitter cooperation are entirely offset by the cost of enabling that cooperation so that the available degrees of freedo…
In this paper, we propose an iterative interference alignment (IA) algorithm for MIMO cellular networks with partial connectivity, which is induced by heterogeneous path losses and spatial correlation. Such systems impose several key technical challenges in the IA algorithm design, namely the overlapping between the direct and interfering links due to the MIMO cellular topology as well as how to exploit the partial connectivity. We shall address these challenges and propose a three stage IA algorithm. As illustration, we analyze the achievable degree of freedom (DoF) of the proposed algorithm …
This paper considers the so-called MIMO interference channel. This situation has relevance in applications such as multi-cell coordination in cellular networks as well as spectrum sharing in cognitive radio networks among others. We address the design of precoding (i.e. beamforming) vectors at each sender with the aim of striking a compromise between beamforming gain at the intended receiver (Egoism) and the mitigation of interference created towards other receivers (Altruism). Combining egoistic and altruistic beamforming has been shown previously to be instrumental to optimizing the rates in…
Using Gaussian inputs and treating interference as noise at the receivers has recently been shown to be sum capacity achieving for the two-user single-input single-output (SISO) Gaussian interference channel in a low interference regime, where the interference levels are below certain thresholds. In this paper, such a low interference regime is characterized for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian interference channels. Conditions are provided on the direct and cross channel gain matrices under which using Gaussian inputs and treating interference as noise at the receivers is sum ca…
It is already well-known that interference alignment (IA) achieves the sum capacity of the K-user interference channel at the high interference regime. On the other hand, it is intuitively clear that when the interference levels are very low, a sum-rate scaling of K (as opposed to K/2 for IA) should be accessed at high signal-to-noise ratio values by simple ("myopic") single-link multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques such as waterfilling. Recent results have indicated that in certain low-to-moderate interference cases, treating interference as noise may in fact be preferable. In thi…
This paper investigates an error covariance matrix splitting technique for multiuser multiple input and multiple output (MIMO) interference downlink channel. Most of the related work has thus far considered the traditional error covariance matrix which has not been well-shaped for maximizing the system capacity. Thus, we split and propose a new iterative error covariance matrix to mitigate the system error and maximize the system capacity in this paper. Numerical results illustrate that our proposed method is strictly better than the traditional method.
This paper compares two important downlink multicell interference mitigation techniques, namely, large-scale (LS) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and network MIMO. We consider a cooperative wireless cellular system operating in time-division duplex (TDD) mode, wherein each cooperating cluster includes $B$ base-stations (BSs), each equipped with multiple antennas and scheduling $K$ single-antenna users. In an LS-MIMO system, each BS employs $BM$ antennas not only to serve its scheduled users, but also to null out interference caused to the other users within the cooperating cluster using …
The degrees of freedom (DoF) of the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Interference Broadcast Channel (IBC) with 2 cells and 2 users per cell are investigated when only delayed channel state information is available at the transmitter side (delayed CSIT). Retrospective Interference Alignment has shown the benefits in terms of DoF of exploiting delayed CSIT for interference, broadcast and also for the IBC. However, previous works studying the IBC with delayed CSIT do not exploit the fact that the users of each cell are served by a common transmitter. This work presents a four-phase precoding…
Interference alignment (IA) has recently emerged as a promising interference mitigation technique for interference networks. In this letter, we focus on the IA non-iterative transceiver design problem in a multiple-input-multiple-output interfering broadcast channel (MIMO-IBC), and observed that there is previously unexploited flexibility in different permutations of user ordering. By choosing a good user ordering for a pre-determined IA inter-channel-interference allocation, an improved transceiver design can be accomplished. In order to achieve a more practical performance-complexity tradeof…
The ergodic spectral efficiency (SE) in interference-limited multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) downlink cellular systems is characterized based on stochastic geometry. A single user is served by using singular value decomposition precoding and combining. By approximating the expectations of the channel eigenvalues, we derive upper and lower bounds on the ergodic SE. The obtained upper bound is the best possible system-level performance of any MIMO strategy in non-cooperative cellular networks. We validate our analytical results through simulation. We also conjecture that there exists the o…
In this research paper approximate mean of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) under imperfect channel state information (CSI) is computed and maximized for throughput enhancement of MIMO interference networks. Each transmitter and receiver has respectively M and N antennas and network operates in a time division duplex mode. Each transceiver adjusts its filter to maximize the expected value of SINR. The proposed New Approach for Throughput Enhancement under imperfect CSI utilizes the reciprocity of wireless networks to maximize the estimated mean. The sum rate performance of the pr…
In this paper, delay constrained performance of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system in a dense environment with co-channel interference is investigated. We apply orthogonal space-time block coding (OSTBC) at the transmitter, and for alleviating the high complexity and cost of the MIMO system, receive antenna selection (RAS) scheme is employed in the downlink. Here, for simple and cheap mobile handsets, one antenna is chosen at the receiver in each utilization of the channel. Under these assumptions, a maximum constant arrival rate with the delay quality-of-service (QoS…
In this paper, we study the degrees of freedom (DoF) of the asymmetric multi-input-multi-output interference broadcast channel (MIMO-IBC). By introducing a notion of connection pattern chain, we generalize the genie chain proposed in [11] to derive and prove the necessary condition of IA feasibility for asymmetric MIMO-IBC, which is denoted as irreducible condition. It is necessary for both linear interference alignment (IA) and asymptotic IA feasibility in MIMO-IBC with arbitrary configurations. In a special class of asymmetric two-cell MIMOIBC, the irreducible condition is proved to be the s…
In this paper, a design criterion for space-time block codes (STBC) is proposed for two-user MIMO interference channels when a group zero-forcing (ZF) algorithm is applied at each receiver to eliminate the inter-user interference. Based on the design criterion, a design of STBC for two-user interference channels is proposed that can achieve full diversity for each user with the group ZF receiver. The code rate approaches one when the time delay in the encoding (or code block size) gets large. Performance results demonstrate that the full diversity can be guaranteed by our proposed STBC with th…
We consider the $K$-user Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) Gaussian interference channel with $M$ antennas at each transmitter and $N$ antennas at each receiver. It is assumed that channel coefficients are constant and are available at all transmitters and at all receivers. The main objective of this paper is to characterize the Degrees of Freedom (DoF) for this channel. Using a new interference alignment technique which has been recently introduced in \cite{abolfazl-final}, we show that $\frac{MN}{M+N} K$ degrees of freedom can be achieved for almost all channel realizations. Also, a new …
We consider the MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) Gaussian interference channel with i.i.d. fading across antennas and channel uses and with the delayed local channel state information at the transmitters (CSIT). For the two-user case, achievability results for the degrees of freedom (DoF) region of this channel are provided. We also prove the tightness of our achievable DoF region for some antenna configurations. Interestingly, there are some cases in which the DoF region with delayed local CSIT is identical to the DoF region with perfect CSIT and that is strictly larger than the DoF regi…
While the efficiency of MIMO transmissions in a rich scattering environment has been demonstrated, less is known about the situation where the fading matrix coefficients come from a line-of-sight model. In this paper, we study in detail how this line-of-sight assumption affects the performance of distributed MIMO transmissions between far away clusters of nodes in a wireless network. Our analysis pertains to the study of a new class of random matrices.
We study the converse and achievability for the degrees of freedom of the multicellular multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiple access channel (MAC) with constant channel coefficients. We assume L>1 homogeneous cells with K>0 users per cell where the users have M antennas and the base stations are equipped with N antennas. The degrees of freedom outer bound for this L-cell and K-user MIMO MAC is formulated. The characterized outer bound uses insight from a limit on the total degrees of freedom for the L-cell heterogeneous MIMO network. We also show through an example that a scheme selec…
We investigate the secure degrees of freedom (SDoF) of the wiretap and the K user Gaussian broadcast channels with multiple antennas at the transmitter, the legitimate receivers and an unknown number of eavesdroppers each with a number of antennas less than or equal to a known value NE. The channel matrices between the legitimate transmitter and the receivers are available everywhere, while the legitimate pair have no information about the eavesdroppers' channels. We provide the exact sum SDoF for the considered system. A new comprehensive upperbound is deduced and a new achievable scheme base…
The two-user multi-input, multi-output (MIMO) interference and cognitive radio channels are studied under the assumption of no channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) from the degrees of freedom (DoF) region perspective. With $M_i$ and $N_i$ denoting the number of antennas at transmitter $i$ and receiver $i$ respectively, the DoF regions of the MIMO interference channel were recently characterized by Huang et al., Zhu and Guo, and by the authors of this paper for all values of numbers of antennas except when $\min(M_1,N_1) > N_2 > M_2$ (or $\min(M_2,N_2) > N_1 > M_1$). This latter …
This paper proposes a linear interference alignment (IA) scheme which can be used for uplink channels in a general multicell multiuser MIMO cellular network. The proposed scheme aims to align interference caused by signals from a set of transmitters into a subspace which is established by the signals from only a subset of those transmitters, thereby effectively reducing the number of interfering transmitters. The total degrees of freedom (DoF) achievable by the proposed scheme is given in closed-form expression, and a numerical analysis shows that the proposed scheme can achieve the optimal Do…
The relationship between the transmitted signal and the noiseless received signals in correlatively changing fading channels is modeled as a nonlinear mapping over manifolds of different dimensions. Dimension counting argument claims that the dimensionality of the neighborhood in which this mapping is bijective with probability one is achievable as the degrees of freedom of the system. We call the degrees of freedom achieved by the nonlinear decoding methods the nonlinear degrees of freedom.
Multi-antenna precoding effectively mitigates the interference in wireless networks. However, the precoding efficiency can be significantly degraded by the overhead due to the required feedback of channel state information (CSI). This paper addresses such an issue by proposing a systematic method of designing precoders for the two-user multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) interference channels based on finite-rate CSI feedback from receivers to their interferers, called cooperative feedback. Specifically, each precoder is decomposed into inner and outer precoders for nulling interference and …
Spectrum sharing between radars and cellular systems is an emerging area of research. In this paper, we model channel between a seaborne MIMO radar and MIMO cellular system. We model a 2D channel to capture the azimuth aspect of the spectrum sharing scenario. Our channel modeling methodology allows MIMO radar to place accurate nulls in the azimuth location of base stations (BS), thus, protecting them from harmful radar interference. We use a projection based approach, where radar waveform is projected onto null space of channel, for mitigating radar interference to BSs. This is also known as a…
MIMO interference network optimization is important for increasingly crowded wireless communication networks. We provide a new algorithm, named Dual Link algorithm, for the classic problem of weighted sum-rate maximization for MIMO multiaccess channels (MAC), broadcast channels (BC), and general MIMO interference channels with Gaussian input and a total power constraint. For MIMO MAC/BC, the algorithm finds optimal signals to achieve the capacity region boundary. For interference channels with Gaussian input assumption, two of the previous state-of-the-art algorithms are the WMMSE algorithm an…
The degrees of freedom (DoF) region of the 2-user multiple-antenna or MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output) interference channel (IC) is studied under fast fading and the assumption of {\em delayed} channel state information (CSI) wherein all terminals know all (or certain) channel matrices perfectly, but with a delay, and each receiver in addition knows its own incoming channels instantaneously. The general MIMO IC is considered with an arbitrary number of antennas at each of the four terminals. Dividing it into several classes depending on the relation between the numbers of antennas at the…
In this paper, considering multiple interference regions simultaneously, an optimal antenna deployment problem for distributed Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) radar is investigated. The optimal antenna deployment problem is solved by proposing an antenna deployment method based on Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO). Firstly, we construct a multi-objective optimization problem for MIMO radar antenna deployment by choosing the interference power densities of different regions as objective functions. Then, to obtain the optimal deployment result without wasting time and computati…
In order to gain new insights into MIMO interference networks, the optimality of $\sum_{k=1}^K M_k/2$ (half the cake per user) degrees of freedom is explored for a $K$-user multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) interference channel where the cross-channels have arbitrary rank constraints, and the $k^{th}$ transmitter and receiver are equipped with $M_k$ antennas each. The result consolidates and significantly generalizes results from prior studies by Krishnamurthy et al., of rank-deficient interference channels where all users have $M$ antennas, and by Tang et al., of full rank interference ch…
In this paper, we study the effect of the absence of channel knowledge for multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) networks. Specifically, we assume perfect channel state information at the receivers, no channel state information at the transmitter(s), and independent identically distributed (i.i.d.) Rayleigh fading across antennas, users and time slots. We provide the characterization of the degrees of freedom (DoF) region for a 2-user MIMO broadcast channel. We then provide a DoF region outer bound for a 2-user MIMO interference channel. This bound is shown to be tight for all possible combina…
In this paper, we study an interference alignment (IA) scheme with finite time extension and beamformer selection method with low computational complexity for X channel. An IA scheme with a chain structure by the Latin square is proposed for Kx3 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) X channel. Since the proposed scheme can have a larger set of possible beamformers than the conventional schemes, its performance is improved by the efficient beamformer selection for a given channel. Also, we propose a condition number (CN) based beamformer selection method with low computational complexity and it…
Interference alignment is degree of freedom optimal in K -user MIMO interference channels and many previous works have studied the transceiver designs. However, these works predominantly focus on networks with perfect channel state information at the transmitters and symmetrical interference topology. In this paper, we consider a limited feedback system with heterogeneous path loss and spatial correlations, and investigate how the dynamics of the interference topology can be exploited to improve the feedback efficiency. We propose a novel spatial codebook design, and perform dynamic quantizati…
We consider a multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) setup where full-duplex (FD) multi-antenna nodes apply linear beamformers to simultaneously transmit and receive multiple streams over Rician fading channels. The exact first and second positive moments of the residual self-interference (SI), involving the squared norm of a sum of non-identically distributed random variables, are derived in closed-form. The method of moments is hence invoked to provide a Gamma approximation for the residual SI distribution. The proposed theorem holds under arbitrary linear precoder/decoder design, …
We take a new perspective on the weighted sum-rate maximization in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference networks, by formulating an equivalent max-min problem. This seemingly trivial reformulation has significant implications: the Lagrangian duality of the equivalent max-min problem provides an elegant way to establish the sum-rate duality between an interference network and its reciprocal when such a duality exists, and more importantly, suggests a novel iterative minimax algorithm for the weighted sum-rate maximization. Moreover, the design and convergence proof of the algorith…
The generalized degrees of freedom (GDoF) of the two user symmetric multiple input multiple output (MIMO) interference channel (IC) are characterized as a function of the channel strength levels and the level of channel state information at the transmitters (CSIT). In this symmetric setting, each transmitter is equipped with M antennas, each receiver is equipped with N antennas, and both cross links have the same strength parameter $α$ and the same channel uncertainty parameter $β$. The main challenge resides in the proof of the outer bound which is accomplished by a generalization of the alig…
The capacity region of the 2-user multi-input multi-output (MIMO) Gaussian interference channel (IC) is characterized to within a constant gap that is independent of the channel matrices for the general case of the MIMO IC with an arbitrary number of antennas at each node. An achievable rate region and an outer bound to the capacity region of a class of interference channels were obtained in previous work by Telatar and Tse as unions over all possible input distributions. In contrast to that previous work on the MIMO IC, a simple and an explicit achievable coding scheme are obtained here and s…
In this paper, we propose a novel genie chains approach to obtain information theoretic degrees of freedom (DoF) outer bounds for MIMO wireless interference networks. This new approach creates a chain of mappings from genie signals provided to a receiver to the exposed signal spaces at that receiver, which then serve as the genie signals for the next receiver in the chain subject to certain linear independence requirements, essentially converting an information theoretic DoF outer bound problem into a linear algebra problem. Several applications of the genie chains approach are presented.
In this paper, the outage probability and outage-based beam design for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference channels are considered. First, closed-form expressions for the outage probability in MIMO interference channels are derived under the assumption of Gaussian-distributed channel state information (CSI) error, and the asymptotic behavior of the outage probability as a function of several system parameters is examined by using the Chernoff bound. It is shown that the outage probability decreases exponentially with respect to the quality of CSI measured by the inverse of the m…
We characterize the total degrees of freedom (DoF) of the full-rank MIMO X channel with arbitrary number of antennas at each node. We elucidate that the existing outer bound is tight for any antenna configuration and provide transmit and receive filter designs that attain this outer bound. The proposed achievable scheme exploits channel extensions in terms of both, symbol and asymmetric complex signaling when the communication is carried out over a constant channel case, and is also applicable to time varying channels. The proposed scheme represents a general framework for the derivation of th…
This paper investigates the linear precoder design for $K$-user interference channels of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transceivers under finite alphabet inputs. We first obtain general explicit expressions of the achievable rate for users in the MIMO interference channel systems. We study optimal transmission strategies in both low and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regions. Given finite alphabet inputs, we show that a simple power allocation design achieves optimal performance at high SNR whereas the well-known interference alignment technique for Gaussian inputs only utilizes a pa…
Both the use of very large arrays of antennas and flexible time division duplexing (TDD) designs have become prominent features of next generation 5G cellular systems. However, both enabling technologies suffer from severe interference effects, respectively known as pilot contamination and base-station-to-base-station (B2B) interference. In this paper, a practical novel TDD design principle is proposed for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) heterogeneous networks (HetNets) that leverages the inherent features of a flexible TDD design to mitigate both the beamformed interference caus…
The problem of finding the optimal number of data streams to transmit in a multi-user MIMO scenario, where both the transmitters and receivers are equipped with multiple antennas is considered. Without channel state information at any transmitter, with a zero-forcing receiver each user is shown to transmit a single data stream to maximize its own outage capacity in the presence of sufficient number of users. Transmitting a single data stream is also shown to be optimal in terms of maximizing the sum of the outage capacities in the presence of sufficient number of users.
Two key traits of 5G cellular networks are much higher base station (BS) densities - especially in the case of low-power BSs - and the use of massive MIMO at these BSs. This paper explores how massive MIMO can be used to jointly maximize the offloading gains and minimize the interference challenges arising from adding small cells. We consider two interference management approaches: joint transmission (JT) with local precoding, where users are served simultaneously by multiple BSs without requiring channel state information exchanges among cooperating BSs, and resource blanking, where some macr…
In this paper, we propose opportunistic interference alignment (OIA) schemes for three-transmitter multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference channels (ICs). In the proposed OIA, each transmitter has its own user group and selects a single user who has the most aligned interference signals. The user dimensions provided by multiple users are exploited to align interfering signals. Contrary to conventional IA, perfect channel state information of all channel links is not required at the transmitter, and each user just feeds back one scalar value to indicate how well the interfering chann…
In this paper, we firstly exploit the inter-user interference (IUI) and inter-cell interference (ICI) as useful references to develop a robust transceiver design based on interference alignment for a downlink multi-user multi-cell multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference network under channel estimation error. At transmitters, we propose a two-tier transmit beamforming strategy, we first achieve the inner beamforming direction and allocated power by minimizing the interference leakage as well as maximizing the system energy efficiency, respectively. Then, for the outer beamformer des…
Interference alignment (IA) has attracted great attention in the last few years for its breakthrough performance in interference networks. However, despite the numerous works dedicated to IA, the feasibility conditions of IA remains unclear for most network topologies. The IA feasibility analysis is challenging as the IA constraints are sets of high-degree polynomials, for which no systematic tool to analyze the solvability conditions exists. In this work, by developing a new mathematical framework that maps the solvability of sets of polynomial equations to the linear independence of their fi…
