We calculate the ratio of the viscosity to the entropy density for both Bose and Fermi gases in the unitary limit using a new approach to the quantum statistical mechanics of gases based on the S-matrix. In the unitary limit the scattering length diverges and the S-matrix equals -1. For the fermion case we obtain eta/s > 4.7 times the proposed lower bound of \hbar/4 pi k_B which came from the AdS/CFT for gauge theories, consistent with the most recent experiments. For the bosonic case we present evidence that the gas undergoes a phase transition to a strongly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate, and is a more perfect fluid, with eta/s > 1.3 times the bound.
A new analytic treatment of three-dimensional homogeneous Bose and Fermi gases in the unitary limit of negative infinite scattering length is presented, based on the S-matrix approach to statistical mechanics we recently developed. The unitary limit occurs at a fixed point of the renormalization group with dynamical exponent z=2 where the S-matrix equals -1. For fermions we find T_c /T_F is approximately 0.1. For bosons we present evidence that the gas does not collapse, but rather has a critical point that is a strongly interacting form of Bose-Einstein condensation. This bosonic critical poi…
We investigate the role of the effective range on the bulk viscosity of $s$- and $p$-wave Fermi gases. At resonance, the presence of the effective range breaks the scale invariance of the system, and hence results in a non-zero bulk viscosity. However, we show that the effective range plays a very different role in the two cases. In the $s$-wave case, the role of the effective range is perturbative, and its contribution to the bulk viscosity vanishes in the limit of zero effective range. On the other hand, the effective range in $p$-wave Fermi gases leads to a non-zero bulk viscosity, even in …
The shear viscosity plays an important role in studies of transport phenomena in ultracold Fermi gases and serves as a diagnostic of various microscopic theories. Due to the complicated phase structures of population-imbalanced Fermi gases, past works mainly focus on unpolarized Fermi gases. Here we investigate the shear viscosity of homogeneous, population-imbalanced Fermi gases with tunable attractive interactions at finite temperatures by using a pairing fluctuation theory for thermodynamical quantities and a gauge-invariant linear response theory for transport coefficients. In the unitary …
We present a proposal to measure anisotropic shear viscosity in a strongly interacting, ultra-cold, unitary Fermi gas confined in a harmonic trap. We introduce anisotropy in this setup by strongly confining the gas in one of the directions with relatively weak confinement in the remaining directions. This system has a close resemblance to anisotropic strongly coupled field theories studied recently in the context of gauge-gravity duality. Computations in such theories (which have gravity duals) revealed that some of the viscosity components of the anisotropic shear viscosity tensor can be made…
Fermi gases with short-range interactions are ubiquitous in ultracold atomic systems. In the absence of spin-flipping processes the number of atoms in each spin species is conserved separately, and we discuss the associated Ward identities. For contact interactions the spin conductivity spectral function sigma_s(omega) has universal power-law tails at high frequency. We derive the spin f-sum rule and show that it is not affected by these tails in d<4 dimensions. Likewise the shear viscosity spectral function eta(omega) has universal tails; in contrast they modify the viscosity sum rule in a ch…
One-dimensional Bose and Fermi gases with contact interactions are known to exhibit the weak-strong duality, where the equilibrium thermodynamic properties of one system at weak coupling are identical to those of the other system at strong coupling. Here, we show that such duality extends beyond the thermodynamics to the frequency-dependent complex bulk viscosity, which is provided by the contact-contact response function. In particular, we confirm that the bulk viscosities of the Bose and Fermi gases agree in the high-temperature limit, where the systematic expansion in terms of fugacity is a…
The bulk viscosity determines dissipation during hydrodynamic expansion. It vanishes in scale invariant fluids, while a nonzero value quantifies the deviation from scale invariance. For the dilute Fermi gas the bulk viscosity is given exactly by the correlation function of the contact density of local pairs. As a consequence, scale invariance is broken purely by pair fluctuations. These fluctuations give rise also to logarithmic terms in the bulk viscosity of the high-temperature nondegenerate gas. For the quantum degenerate regime I report numerical Luttinger-Ward results for the contact corr…
Many strongly coupled fluids are known to share similar hydrodynamic transport properties. In this work we argue that this similarity could extend beyond hydrodynamics to transient dynamics through the presence of non-hydrodynamic modes. We review non-hydrodynamic modes in kinetic theory and gauge/gravity duality and discuss their signatures in trapped Fermi gases close to unitarity. Reanalyzing previously published experimental data, we find hints of non-hydrodynamic modes in cold Fermi gases in two and three dimensions.
We develop an analytical approach for the description of an atomic Bose gas at unitarity. By focusing in first instance on the evaluation of the single-particle density matrix, we derive several universal properties of the unitary Bose gas, such as the chemical potential, the contact, the speed of sound, the condensate density and the effective interatomic interaction. The theory is also generalized to describe Bose gases with a finite scattering length and then reduces to the Bogoliubov theory in the weak-coupling limit.
In three spatial dimensions, in the unitary limit of a non-relativistic quantum Bose or Fermi gas, the scattering length diverges. This occurs at a renormalization group fixed point, thus these systems present interesting examples of interacting scale-invariant models with dynamical exponent z=2. We study this problem in two and three spatial dimensions using the S-matrix based approach to the thermodynamics we recently developed. It is well suited to the unitary limit where the S-matrix equals -1, since it allows an expansion in the inverse coupling. We define a meaningful scale-invariant, un…
We investigate the low-temperature behavior of the ratio between the shear viscosity ηand the entropy density s in the unitary Fermi gas by using a model based on the zero-temperature spectra of both bosonic collective modes and fermonic single-particle excitations. Our theoretical curve of η/s as a function of the temperature T is in qualitative agreement with the experimental data of trapped ultracold 6Li atomic gases. We find the minimum value η/s \simeq 0.44 (in units of \hbar/k_B) at the temperature T/T_F \simeq 0.27, with T_F the Fermi temperature.
We study the virial expansion for three-dimensional Bose and Fermi gases at finite temperature using an approximation that only considers two-body processes and is valid for high temperatures and low densities. The first virial coefficients are computed and the second is exact. The results are obtained for the full range of values of the scattering length and the unitary limit is recovered as a particular case. A weak coupling expansion is performed and the free case is also obtained as a proper limit. The influence of an anisotropic harmonic trap is considered using the Local Density Approxim…
The Hartree energy shift is calculated for a unitary Fermi gas. By including the momentum dependence of the scattering amplitude explicitly, the Hartree energy shift remains finite even at unitarity. Extending the theory also for spin-imbalanced systems allows calculation of polaron properties. The results are in good agreement with more involved theories and experiments.
In this letter, we investigate the fluctuation effects on the transport properties of unitary Fermi gases in the vicinity of the superfluid transition temperature $T_c$. Based on the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau formalism of the BEC-BCS crossover, we investigate both the residual resistivity below $T_c$ induced by phase slips and the paraconductivity above $T_c$ due to pair fluctuations. These two effects have been well studied in the weak coupling BCS superconductor, and here we generalize them to the unitary regime of ultracold Fermi gases. We find that while the residual resistivity below…
We present the first ab initio determination of the shear viscosity eta of the Unitary Fermi Gas, based on finite temperature quantum Monte Carlo calculations and the Kubo linear-response formalism. We determine the temperature dependence of the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio eta/s. The minimum of eta/s appears to be located above the critical temperature for the superfluid-to-normal phase transition with the most probable value being eta/s approx 0.2 hbar/kB, which almost saturates the Kovtun-Son-Starinets universal value hbar/(4 pi kB).
We propose to use the energy absorption spectroscopy to measure the kinetic coefficients of unitary Fermi gases in a uniform potential. We show that in our scheme, the energy absorption spectrum is proportional to the dynamic structure factor of the system. The profile of the spectrum depends on the shear viscosity $η$, the thermal conductivity $κ$ and the superfluid bulk viscosity $ξ_3$. We show that extraction of these coefficients from the spectrum is achievable in present experiments.
We compute the shear viscosity of the unitary Fermi gas above the superfluid transition temperature, using a diagrammatic technique that starts from the exact Kubo formula. The formalism obeys a Ward identity associated with scale invariance which guarantees that the bulk viscosity vanishes identically. For the shear viscosity, vertex corrections and the associated Aslamazov-Larkin contributions are shown to be crucial to reproduce the full Boltzmann equation result in the high-temperature, low fugacity limit. The frequency dependent shear viscosity $η(ω)$ exhibits a Drude-like transport peak …
We compute the frequency-dependent shear and bulk viscosity spectral functions of an interacting Fermi gas in a quantum virial expansion up to second quadratic order in the fugacity parameter $z=e^{βμ}$, which is small at high temperatures. Calculations are carried out using a diagrammatic finite-temperature field-theoretic framework, in which the analytic continuation from Matsubara to real frequencies is carried out in closed analytic form. Besides a possible zero-frequency Drude peak, our results for the spectral functions show a broad continuous spectrum at all frequencies with an addition…
We present an ab initio determination of the shear viscosity for the unitary Fermi gas based on finite temperature quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations and the Kubo linear-response formalism. The results are confronted with the bound for the shear viscosity originating from hydrodynamic fluctuations. Assuming smoothness of the frequency dependent shear viscosity eta(omega), we show that the bound is violated in the low temperature regime and the violation occurs simultaneously with the onset of the Cooper paring in the system. In order to preserve the hydrodynamic bound in QMC eta(omega) has…
The contact parameter in unitary Fermi Gases governs the short-distance, high-momentum, and high-energy properties of the system. We perform accurate quantum Monte Carlo calculations with highly optimized trial functions to precisely determine this parameter at T=0, demonstrate its universal application to a variety of observables, and determine the regions of momentum and energy over which the leading short-range behavior is dominant. We derive Tan's expressions for the contact parameter using just the short-range behavior of the ground-state many-body wave function, and use this behavior to …
We consider a system consisting of a strongly interacting, ultracold unitary Fermi gas under harmonic confinement. Our analysis suggests the possibility of experimentally studying, in this system, an anisotropic shear viscosity tensor driven by the anisotropy in the trapping potential. In particular, we suggest that this experimental setup could mimic some features of anisotropic geometries that have recently been studied for strongly coupled field theories which have a gravitational dual. Results using the AdS/CFT correspondence in these theories show that in systems with a background linear …
The maximal algebra of symmetries of the free single-particle Schroedinger equation is determined and its relevance for the holographic duality in non-relativistic Fermi systems is investigated. This algebra of symmetries is an infinite dimensional extension of the Schroedinger algebra, it is isomorphic to the Weyl algebra of quantum observables, and it may be interpreted as a non-relativistic higher-spin algebra. The associated infinite collection of Noether currents bilinear in the fermions are derived from their relativistic counterparts via a light-like dimensional reduction. The minimal c…
A Fermi gas of atoms with resonant interactions is predicted to obey universal hydrodynamics, where the shear viscosity and other transport coefficients are universal functions of the density and temperature. At low temperatures, the viscosity has a universal quantum scale $\hbar n$ where $n$ is the density, while at high temperatures the natural scale is $p_T^3/\hbar^2$ where $p_T$ is the thermal momentum. We employ breathing mode damping to measure the shear viscosity at low temperature. At high temperature $T$, we employ anisotropic expansion of the cloud to find the viscosity, which exhibi…
An ultracold Fermi gas with a zero-range attractive potential in the unitary limit is investigated using variational and diffusion Monte Carlo methods. Previous calculations have used a finite range interactions and extrapolate the results to zero-range. Here we extend the quantum Monte Carlo method to directly use a zero-range interaction without extrapolation. We employ a trial wave function with the correct boundary conditions, and modify the sampling procedures to handle the zero-range interaction. The results are reliable and have low variance.
We theoretically investigate the thermo-particle transport properties of an unitary Fermi gas be- tween two reservoirs connected by a quantum point contact. We find several distinguished properties that are qualitatively different from those of weak or non-interacting gas systems. The particle trans- port figure of merit is drastically enhanced in the unitary regime and it increases as the transmission coefficient increases, exactly opposite to the behavior in the weak or non-interacting gas systems. The Lorentz number violates the Wiedemann-Franz law, demonstrating the breakdown of Fermi liqu…
We study both Bose and Fermi gases at finite temperature and density in an approximation that sums an infinite number of many body processes that are reducible to 2-body scatterings. This is done for arbitrary negative scattering length, which interpolates between the ideal and unitary gas limits. In the unitary limit, we compute the first four virial coefficients within our approximation. The second virial coefficient is exact, and we extend the previously known result for fermions to bosons, and also for both bosons and fermions for the upper branch on the other side of unitarity (infinitely…
We determine the shear viscosity of the ultracold Fermi gas at unitarity in the normal phase using hydrodynamic expansion data. The analysis is based on a generalized fluid dynamic framework which ensures a smooth transition between the fluid dynamic core of the cloud and the ballistic corona. We use expansion data taken by Joseph et al. and measurements of the equation of state by Ku et al. We find that the shear viscosity to particle density ratio just above the critical temperature is $η/n|_{T_c}=0.41\pm 0.11$. We also obtain evidence that the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio has a …
We investigate dynamical three-body correlations in the Bose gas during the earliest stages of evolution after a quench to the unitary regime. The development of few-body correlations is theoretically observed by determining the two- and three-body contacts. We find that the growth of three-body correlations is gradual compared to two-body correlations. The three-body contact oscillates coherently, and we identify this as a signature of Efimov trimers. We show that the growth of three-body correlations depends non-trivially on parameters derived from both the density and Efimov physics. These …

We non-perturbatively study pairing in the high-temperature regime of polarized unitary two-component Fermi gases by extracting the pair-momentum distribution and shot-noise correlations. Whereas the pair-momentum distribution allows us to analyze the propagation of pairs composed of one spin-up and one spin-down fermion, shot-noise correlations provide us with a tomographic insight into pairing correlations around the Fermi surfaces associated with the two species. Assuming that the dominant pairing patterns right above the superfluid transition also govern the formation of condensates in the…
The properties of two-component Fermi gases with zero-range interactions are universal. We use an explicitly correlated Gaussian basis set expansion approach to investigate small equal-mass two-component Fermi gases under spherically symmetric external harmonic confinement. At unitarity, we determine the ground state energy for systems with up to ten particles interacting through finite-range two-body potentials for both even and odd number of particles. We extrapolate the energies to the zero-range limit using a novel scheme that removes the linear and, in some cases, also the quadratic depen…
The growth rate of the out-of-time-ordered correlator in a N-flavor Fermi gas is investigated and the Lyapunove exponent $λ_L$ is calculated to the order of $1/N$. We find that the Lyapunove exponent monotonically increases as the the interaction strength increases from the BCS limit to the unitary region. At the unitarity the Lyapunove exponent increases while the temperature drops and it can reach to the order of $λ_L\sim T$ around the critical temperature for the $N=1$ case. The system scrambles faster for stronger pairing fluctuations. At the BCS limit, the Lyapunov exponent behaviors as $…
We study a degenerate Bose gas quenched to unitarity by solving a many-body model including three-body losses and correlations up to second order. As the gas evolves in this strongly-interacting regime, the buildup of correlations leads to the formation of extended pairs bound purely by many-body effects, analogous to the phenomenon of Cooper pairing in the BCS regime of the Fermi gas. Through fast sweeps away from unitarity, we detail how the correlation growth and formation of bound pairs emerge in the fraction of unbound atoms remaining post sweep, finding quantitative agreement with experi…
We investigate the phase structure of spin-imbalanced unitary Fermi gases beyond mean-field theory by means of the Functional Renormalization Group. In this approach, quantum and thermal fluctuations are resolved in a systematic manner. The discretization of the effective potential on a grid allows us to accurately account for both first- and second-order phase transitions that are present on the mean-field level. We compute the full phase diagram in the plane of temperature and spin-imbalance and discuss the existence of other conjectured phases such as the Sarma phase and a precondensation r…
Determinations of the shear viscosity of trapped ultracold gases suffer from systematic, uncontrolled uncertainties related to the treatment of the dilute part of the gas cloud. In this work we present an analysis of expansion experiments based on a new method, anisotropic fluid dynamics, that interpolates between Navier-Stokes fluid dynamics at the center of the cloud and ballistic behavior in the dilute corona. We validate the method using a comparison between anisotropic fluid dynamics and numerical solutions of the Boltzmann equation. We then apply anisotropic fluid dynamics to the expansi…
We renormalize the two-body contact interaction based on the exact solution of two interacting particles in a harmonic trap. This renormalization extends the validity of the contact interaction to large scattering lengths. We apply this renormalized interaction to a degenerate unitary Bose gas to study its stationary properties and elementary excitations using the mean-field theory and the hyperspherical method. Since the scattering length is no longer a relevant length scale at unitarity, universal properties are obtained that depend only on the average particle density. Our treatment shows t…
It is quite common that several different phases exist simultaneously in a system of trapped quantum gases of ultra-cold atoms. One such example is the strongly-interacting Fermi gas with two imbalanced spin species, which has received a great amount of attention due to the possible presence of exotic superfluid phases. By employing novel numerical techniques and algorithms, we self-consistently solve the Bogoliubov de-Gennes equations, which describe Fermi superfluids in the mean-field framework. From this study, we investigate the novel phases of spin-imbalanced Fermi gases and examine the v…
We study the phase diagram of mass- and spin-imbalanced unitary Fermi gases, in search for the emergence of spatially inhomogeneous phases. To account for fluctuation effects beyond the mean-field approximation, we employ renormalization group techniques. We thus obtain estimates for critical values of the temperature, mass and spin imbalance, above which the system is in the normal phase. In the unpolarized, equal-mass limit, our result for the critical temperature is in accordance with state-of-the-art Monte Carlo calculations. In addition, we estimate the location of regions in the phase di…
The scattering properties of spin-polarized Fermi gases are dominated by p-wave interactions. Besides their inherent angular dependence, these interactions differ from their s-wave counterparts as they also require the presence of a finite effective range in order to understand the low-energy properties of the system. In this article we examine how the shear viscosity and thermal conductivity of a three-dimensional spin-polarized Fermi gas in the normal phase depend on the effective range and the scattering volume in both the weakly and strongly interacting limits. We show that although the sh…
We present a hydrodynamic model of ultracold, but not yet quantum condensed, dipolar Bosonic gases. Such systems present both $s$-wave and dipolar scattering, the latter of which results in anisotropic transport tensors of thermal conductivity and viscosity. This work presents an analytic derivation of the viscosity tensor coefficients, utilizing the methods established in [Wang et al., arXiv:2205.10465], where the thermal conductivities were derived. Taken together, these transport tensors then permit a comprehensive description of hydrodynamics that is now embellished with dipolar anisotropy…
Shear viscosity is a measure of the amount of dissipation in a simple fluid. In kinetic theory shear viscosity is related to the rate of momentum transport by quasi-particles, and the uncertainty relation suggests that the ratio of shear viscosity eta to entropy density s in units of hbar/k_B is bounded by a constant. Here, hbar is Planck's constant and k_B is Boltzmann's constant. A specific bound has been proposed on the basis of string theory where, for a large class of theories, one can show that eta/s is greater or equal to hbar/(4 pi k_B). We will refer to a fluid that saturates the stri…
We introduce time-dependent variational Monte Carlo for continuous-space Bose gases. Our approach is based on the systematic expansion of the many-body wave-function in terms of multi-body correlations and is essentially exact up to adaptive truncation. The method is benchmarked by comparison to exact Bethe-ansatz or existing numerical results for the integrable Lieb-Liniger model. We first show that the many-body wave-function achieves high precision for ground-state properties, including energy and first-order as well as second-order correlation functions. Then, we study the out-of-equilibri…
Using universal properties and a basic statistical mechanical approach, we propose a general equation of state for unitary Fermi gases. The universal equation of state is written as a series solution to a self consistent integral equation where the general solution is a linear combination of Fermi functions. First, by truncating our series solution to four terms with already known exact theoretical inputs at limiting cases, namely the first \emph{three} virial coefficients and using the Bertsch parameter as a free parameter, we find a good agreement with experimental measurements in the entire…
We precisely test scale invariance and local thermal equilibrium in the hydrodynamic expansion of a Fermi gas of atoms as a function of interaction strength. After release from an anisotropic optical trap, we observe that a resonantly interacting gas obeys scale-invariant hydrodynamics, where the mean square cloud size $\langle{\mathbf{r}}^2\rangle=\langle x^2+y^2+z^2\rangle$ expands ballistically (like a noninteracting gas) and the energy-averaged bulk viscosity is consistent with zero, $0.005(0.016)\,\hbar\,n$, with $n$ the density. In contrast, the aspect ratios of the cloud exhibit anisotr…
We discuss the phase diagram and the universal scaling functions of attractive Fermi gases at finite imbalance. The existence of a quantum multicritical point for the unitary gas at vanishing chemical potential $μ$ and effective magnetic field $h$, first discussed by Nikolić and Sachdev, gives rise to three different phase diagrams, depending on whether the inverse scattering length $1/a$ is negative, positive or zero. Within a Luttinger-Ward formalism, the phase diagram and pressure of the unitary gas is calculated as a function of the dimensionless scaling variables $T/μ$ and $h/μ$. The resu…
In this paper, we examine in a unified fashion dissipative transport in strongly correlated systems. We thereby demonstrate the connection between "bad metals" (such as the high temperature superconductors) and "perfect fluids" (such as the ultracold Fermi gases, near unitarity). One motivation of this work is to communicate to the high energy physics community some of the central unsolved problems in high $T_c$ superconductors. Because of interest in the nearly perfect fluidity of the cold gases and because of new tools such as the AdS/CFT correspondence, this better communication may lead to…
The shear viscosity has been shown to be equal to the product of pressure and relaxation time in normal scale-invariant fluids, but the presence of superfluidity at low temperatures can alter the relation. By using the mean-field BCS-Leggett theory with a gauge-invariant linear response theory for unitary Fermi superfluids, we present an explicit relation between thermodynamic quantities, including the pressure and chemical potential, and transport coefficients, including the shear viscosity, superfluid density, and anomalous shear viscosity from momentum transfer via Cooper pairs. The relatio…
We investigate the possibility of realizing supersolid quantum phases in bosonic Rydberg-excited quantum lattice gases in the presence of non-unitary processes, by simulating the dynamical evolution starting from initial preparation in non-dissipative equilibrium states. Within Gutzwiller theory, we first analyze the many-body ground-state of a bosonic Rydberg-excited quantum gas in a two dimensional optical lattice for variable atomic hopping rates and Rabi detunings. Furthermore, we perform time evolution of different supersolid phases using the Lindblad-master equation. With the inclusion o…
Understanding strongly correlated phases of matter, from the quark-gluon plasma to neutron stars, and in particular the dynamics of such systems, $e.g.$ following a Hamiltonian quench, poses a fundamental challenge in modern physics. Ultracold atomic gases are excellent quantum simulators for these problems, thanks to tuneable interparticle interactions and experimentally resolvable intrinsic timescales. In particular, they give access to the unitary regime where the interactions are as strong as allowed by quantum mechanics. Following years of experiments on unitary Fermi gases, unitary Bose …
This thesis considers out-of-equilibrium dynamics of strongly interacting non-relativistic Fermi gases in several two and three dimensional geometries. The tools of second-order hydrodynamics and gauge-gravity duality will be utilized to address this system. Many of the themes of this work are motivated by the observed similarities in transport properties between strongly interacting Fermi gases and other very different strongly interacting quantum fluids such as the quark-gluon plasma, high temperature superconductors, and quantum field theories described by gauge-gravity duality. In particul…
We compute the coefficients of bulk viscosity for a non-relativistic superfluid corresponding to a fermionic system close to the unitarity limit. We consider the low temperature regime assuming that the transport properties of the system are dominated by phonons. To compute the coefficients of bulk viscosity we use kinetic theory in the relaxation time approximation and the low energy effective field theory of the corresponding system. We show that the three independent bulk viscosity coefficients, $ζ_1, ζ_2, ζ_3$, associated with irreversible flows vanish for phonons with a linear dispersion …
The contact ${\cal I}$, introduced by Tan, has emerged as a key parameter characterizing universal properties of strongly interacting Fermi gases. For ultracold Fermi gases near a Feshbach resonance, the contact depends upon two quantities: the interaction parameter $1/(k_F a)$, where $k_F$ is the Fermi wave-vector and $a$ is the $s$-wave scattering length, and the temperature $T/T_F$, where $T_F$ is the Fermi temperature. We present the first measurements of the temperature dependence of the contact in a unitary Fermi gas using Bragg spectroscopy. The contact is seen to follow the predicted d…
We consider plane wave modes in ultracold, but not quantum degenerate, dipolar Fermi gases in the hydrodynamic limit. Longitudinal waves present anisotropies in both the speed of sound and their damping, and experience a small, undulatory effect in their flow velocity. Two distinct types of shear waves appear, a ``familiar" one, and another that is accompanied by nontrivial density and temperature modulations. We propose these shear modes as an experimental means to measure the viscosity coefficients, including their anisotropies.
We analyze the phase structure of mass- and spin-imbalanced unitary Fermi gases in harmonic traps. To this end, we employ Density Functional Theory in the local density approximation. Depending on the values of the control parameters measuring mass and spin imbalance, we observe that three regions exist in the trap, namely: a superfluid region at the center, surrounded by a mixed region of resonantly interacting spin-up and spin-down fermions, and finally a fully polarized phase surrounding the previous two regions. We also find regimes in the phase diagram where the existence of a superfluid …
Fermi gases with magnetically tunable interactions provide a clean and controllable laboratory system for modeling interparticle interactions between fermions in nature. The s-wave scattering length, which is dominant a low temperature, is made to diverge by tuning near a collisional (Feshbach) resonance. In this regime, two-component Fermi gases are stable and strongly interacting, enabling tests of nonperturbative many-body theories in a variety of disciplines, from high temperature superconductors to neutron matter and quark-gluon plasmas. We have developed model-independent methods for mea…
