We investigate the possibility of realizing supersolid quantum phases in bosonic Rydberg-excited quantum lattice gases in the presence of non-unitary processes, by simulating the dynamical evolution starting from initial preparation in non-dissipative equilibrium states. Within Gutzwiller theory, we first analyze the many-body ground-state of a bosonic Rydberg-excited quantum gas in a two dimensional optical lattice for variable atomic hopping rates and Rabi detunings. Furthermore, we perform time evolution of different supersolid phases using the Lindblad-master equation. With the inclusion of two different non-unitary processes, namely spontaneous decay from a Rydberg state to the ground state and dephasing of the addressed Rydberg state, we study the effect of non-unitary processes on those quantum phases and observe long-lived states in the presence of decay and dephasing. We find that long-lived supersolid quantum phases are observable within a range of realistic decay and dephasing rates, while high rates cause any initial configuration to homogenize quickly, preventing possible supersolid formation.
In this paper, we study Bose-Einstein condensation of Rydberg-dressed atoms considering finite range interactions. We use Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximation based on Mean-Field approach. Moreover, within this approximation modified by the finite-range character of the two-body interaction we shall obtain analytical expressions for thermodynamic quantities of Rydberg-dressed Bose gas. The imaginary part of the quasiparticle spectrum of a BEC signals the instability of the roton mode with respect to the formation of supersolid state. Our theory predicts a second-order quantum phase transition…
One of the major challenges in realizing a strongly interacting lattice gas using Rydberg states is the occurrence of avalanche loss processes. As these are directly proportional to the total Rydberg fraction, the commonly suggested solution is using far off-resonantly excited Rydberg states. We instead propose the realization of a correlated bosonic lattice gas at near-resonant excitation, where the total Rydberg fraction in the bulk is low due to the strong, interaction-driven effective detuning. Using real-space dynamical mean-field theory we show that its reduced effect at the boundary of …

Engineering quantum phases with spontaneously broken symmetries is a major goal of research in different fields. Trapped ultracold Rydberg-excited atoms in optical lattices are a promising platform for realizing quantum phases with broken lattice translational symmetry since they are interacting over distances larger than the lattice constant. Although numerous theoretical works on trapped Rydberg-excited gases have predicted such phases, in particular density wave or supersolid phases, their experimental observation proves to be difficult due to challenges such as scattering processes and the…
The emergent phases of strongly correlated spin-1/2 Fermi gases of Rydberg dressed atoms in a one dimensional optical lattice are theoretically investigated. At weak coupling a bosonization description is used to demonstrate the ability to drive alternating quantum phase transitions between distinct Luttinger liquids. At strong coupling the ground state develops non-trivial phase separation exhibiting Luttinger liquid ''puddles'' separated by magnetic domain walls due to the interplay of the incommensurate filling and the Rydberg core length scale. These phases can be detected in ultracold gas…
We investigate the ground-state properties and excitations of Rydberg-dressed bosons in both three and two dimensions, using the hypernetted-chain Euler-Lagrange approximation, which accounts for correlations and thus goes beyond the mean field approximation. The short-range behavior of the pair distribution function signals the instability of the homogeneous system towards the formation of droplet crystals at strong couplings and large soft-core radius. This tendency to spatial density modulation coexists with off-diagonal long-range order. The contribution of the correlation energy to the gr…
We present photo-excitation of ultra-long-range Rydberg molecules as a probe of spatial correlations in quantum gases. Rydberg molecules can be created with well-defined internuclear spacing, set by the radius of the outer lobe of the Rydberg electron wavefunction $R_n$. By varying the principal quantum number $n$ of the target Rydberg state, the molecular excitation rate can be used to map the pair-correlation function of the trapped gas $g^{(2)}(R_n)$. We demonstrate this with ultracold Sr gases and probe pair-separation length scales ranging from $R_n = 1400 - 3200$ $a_0$, which are on the …

We systematically investigate the topological properties of spin polarized Rydberg-dressed fermionic atoms loaded in a bilayer optical lattice. Through tuning the Rydberg coupling strength and the inter-layer tunneling amplitude, we identify different types of topological superfluid states generated from the inter-layer pairing and relative gauge phase modulation of the couples 2D $p$-wave superfluids. These phases includes gapped/gapless with/without time reversal symmetry. One of the most interesting states is a gapless paired topological superfluid with both the time-reversal symmetry and p…
Recent experiments with strongly interacting, driven Rydberg ensembles have introduced a promising setup for the study of self-organized criticality (SOC) in cold atom systems. Based on this setup, we theoretically propose a control mechanism for the paradigmatic avalanche dynamics of SOC in terms of a time-dependent drive amplitude. This gives access to a variety of avalanche dominated, self-organization scenarios, prominently including self-organized criticality, as well as sub- and supercritical dynamics. We analyze the dependence of the dynamics on external scales and spatial dimensionalit…
We have investigated formation of structures of Rydberg atoms excited from a disordered gas of ultracold atoms, using rate equations for two-photon Rydberg excitation in a single atom without eliminating the intermediate state. We have explored the validity range of these rate equations and defined a simple measure to determine, whether our model is applicable for a given set of laser parameters. We have applied these rate equations in Monte Carlo simulations of ultracold gases, for different laser beam profiles, and compared these simulations to experimental observations and find a general ag…
Two-dimensional (2D) spectroscopy uses multiple electromagnetic pulses to infer the properties of a complex system. A paradigmatic class of target systems are molecular aggregates, for which one can obtain information on the eigenstates, various types of static and dynamic disorder and on relaxation processes. However, two-dimensional spectra can be difficult to interpret without precise knowledge of how the signal components relate to microscopic Hamiltonian parameters and system-bath interactions. Here we show that two-dimensional spectroscopy can be mapped in the microwave domain to highly …
The statistics of strongly interacting, ultracold Rydberg gases are governed by the interplay of two factors: geometrical restrictions induced by blockade effects, and quantum mechanical effects. To shed light on their relative roles in the statistics of Rydberg gases, we compare three models in this paper: a quantum mechanical model describing the excitation dynamics within a Rydberg gas, a Random Sequential Adsorption (RSA) process on a Random Geometric Graph (RGG), and a RSA process on a Decomposed Random Intersection Graph (DRIG). The latter model is new, and refers to choosing a particula…
Dense Rydberg gases are out-of-equilibrium systems where strong density-density interactions give rise to effective kinetic constraints. They cause dynamic arrest associated with highly-constrained many-body configurations, leading to slow relaxation and glassy behavior. Multi-component Rydberg gases feature additional long-range interactions such as excitation-exchange. These are analogous to particle swaps used to artificially accelerate relaxation in simulations of atomistic models of classical glass formers. In Rydberg gases, however, swaps are real physical processes, which provide dynami…
As was recently shown in Ref. 1, many eigenstates of a random Rydberg gas with resonant dipole-dipole interactions are highly delocalized. Although the high degree of delocalization is generic to various types of power-law interactions and to both two and three-dimensional systems, in their detailed aspects the coherence distributions are sensitive to these parameters and vary dramatically between different systems. We calculate the eigenstates of both two and three-dimensional gases and quantify their delocalization throughout the atoms in the gas using a coherence measure. By contrasting the…
Despite the striking progress in the field of quantum gases, one of their much anticipated application -- the simulation of quantum Hall states -- remains elusive: all experimental approaches so far failed in reaching a sufficiently small ratio between atom and vortex densities. In this paper we consider rotating Rydberg--dressed atoms in magnetic traps: these gases offer strong and tunable non-local repulsive interactions and very low densities; hence they provide an exceptional platform to reach the quantum Hall regime. Based on the Lindemann criterion and the analysis of the interplay of th…
Black-body radiation, omnipresent at room temperature, couples nearby Rydberg states. The resulting state mixture features strong dipolar interactions, which may induce dephasing in a Rydberg many-body system. Here we report on a single atom resolved study of this state contamination and the emerging pairwise interactions in optical tweezers. For near-resonant laser detuning we observe characteristic correlations with a length scale set by the dipolar interaction. Our study reveals the microscopic origin of avalanche excitation observed in previous experiments.
