We analytically compute the orbital effects induced on the motion of a spinning particle geodesically traveling around a central rotating body by the general relativistic two-body spin-spin and spin-orbit interactions. We use the weak-field and slow-motion leading-order approximation. Neither assumptions on the eccentricity nor the inclination of the orbit of the particle have been assumed. No specific orientations of the spins involved have been chosen. (Abridged)
We investigate detection of Dirac quanta in a uniformly eccentric rotating frame both with canonical and detector approaches by employing relativistic rotational transformations. First we consider a relativistic uniformly eccentric rotating detector that is coupled to the scalar density of a massless Dirac field, and show that this detector has a nonzero response function and observes a Planckian energy spectrum. Then using relativistic rotational transformations, we investigate the canonical quantization of Dirac field in relativistic eccentric rotating frame. We show that it's not possible t…
New rotation laws have been recently found for general-relativistic self-gravitating stationary fluids. It was not clear whether they apply to systems rotating with a constant linear velocity. In this paper we fill this gap. The answer is positive. That means, in particular, that these systems should exhibit the recently discovered general-relativistic weak-field effects within rotating tori: the dynamic anti-dragging and the deviation from the Keplerian motion induced by the fluid selfgravity.
Simulation and experimental realization of acoustic black holes in analogue gravity systems have lead to a novel understanding of relevant phenomena such as Hawking radiation or superradiance. We explore here the possibility to use relativistic systems for simulating rotating black hole solutions and possibly get an acoustic analogue of a Kerr black hole. In doing so we demonstrate a precise relation between non-relativistic and relativistic solutions and provide a new class of vortex solutions for relativistic systems. Such solutions might be used in the future as a test bed in numerical simu…
The exact relativistic treatment of a rotating disk surrounded by a magnetized material halo is presented. The features of the halo and disk are described by the distributional energy-momentum tensor of a general fluid in canonical form. All the relevant quantities and the metric and electromagnetic potentials are exactly determined by an arbitrary harmonic function only. For instance, the generalized Kuzmin-disk potential is used. The particular class of solutions obtained is asymptotically flat and satisfies all the energy conditions. Moreover, the motion of a charged particle on the halo is…
The stability of static uncharged spheres with anisotropic internal stresses is studied in general relativity. It has been noticed that pressure anisotropy plays an important role for stability of stellar structure. It is shown that radial profile of the stress anisotropy can be considered to decide potentially stable/unstable regions. Finally, pontentially stable/unstable regions of two known models of relativistic star have been examined.
We present a new numerical code to compute non-axisymmetric eigenmodes of rapidly rotating relativistic stars by adopting spatially conformally flat approximation of general relativity. The approximation suppresses the radiative degree of freedom of relativistic gravity and the field equations are cast into a set of elliptic equations. The code is tested against the low-order f- and p-modes of slowly rotating stars for which a good agreement is observed in frequencies computed by our new code and those computed by the full theory. Entire sequences of the low order counter-rotating f-modes are …
Recent general-relativistic extensions of Newtonian rotation laws for self-gravitating stationary fluids allow one to rederive, in the first post-Newtonian approximation, the well known geometric dragging of frames, and two new weak-field effects within rotating tori. These are the recently discovered anti-dragging and a new effect that measures the deviation from the Keplerian motion and/or the contribution of the fluids selfgravity. They can be applied to the study of the existence of the (post-)Newtonian limits of solutions and in investigations of inequalities relating parameters of rotati…
We show the results of two dimensional general relativistic inviscid and isothermal hydrodynamical simulations comparing the behavior of co-rotating (with respect to the black hole rotation) and counter-rotating circumbinary quasi-Keplerian discs in the post merger phase of a supermassive binary black hole system. While confirming the spiral shock generation within the disc due to the combined effects of mass loss and recoil velocity of the black hole, we find that the maximum luminosity of counter-rotating discs is a factor ~(2-12) higher than in the co-rotating case, depending on the spin of…
Stationary and axisymmetric solutions of relativistic rotating stars with strong mixed poloidal and toroidal magnetic fields are obtained numerically. Because of the mixed components of the magnetic field, the underlying stationary and axisymmetric spacetimes are no longer circular. These configurations are computed from the full set of the Einstein-Maxwell equations, Maxwell's equations and from first integrals and integrability conditions of the magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium equations. After a brief introduction of the formulation of the problem, we present the first results for highly def…
We formulate new general-relativistic extensions of Newtonian rotation laws for self-gravitating stationary fluids. They have been used to re-derive, in the first post-Newtonian approximation, the well known geometric dragging of frames. We derive two other general-relativistic weak-field effects within rotating tori: the recently discovered dynamic anti-dragging and a new effect that measures the deviation from the Keplerian motion and/or the contribution of the fluids selfgravity. One can use the rotation laws to study the uniqueness and the convergence of the post-Newtonian approximations, …
The stability properties of relativistic stars against gravitational collapse to black hole is a classical problem in general relativity. A sufficient criterion for secular instability was established by Friedman, Ipser and Sorkin (1988), who proved that a sequence of uniformly rotating barotropic stars is secularly unstable on one side of a turning point and then argued that a stronger result should hold: that the sequence should be stable on the opposite side, with the turning point marking the onset of secular instability. We show here that this expectation is not met. By computing in full …
In this paper we compute general-relativistic polytropic models simulating rigidly rotating, pulsating neutron stars. These relativistic compact objects, with a radius of $\sim 10 \, \mathrm{km}$ and mass between $\sim 1.4$ and $3.2$ solar masses, are closely related to pulsars. We emphasize on computing the change in the pulsation eigenfrequencies owing to a rigid rotation, which, in turn, is a decisive issue for studying stability of such objects. In our computations, we keep rotational perturbation terms of up to second order in the angular velocity.
We examine the toroidal oscillations on the slowly rotating relativistic stars in tensor-vector-scalar (TeVeS) theory with the Cowling approximation. As a result, we find that perturbation equations describing the toroidal oscillations are same equation form as in general relativity (GR). Although the frequencies of toroidal oscillations in TeVeS are not so different from those in GR, the momentum inertia depends strongly on the gravitational theory. Thus, observing the frequencies of toroidal oscillations and momentum inertia with high accuracy might reveal the gravitational theory in the str…
In this paper we study the relativistic bulk tensor, shear tensor and the shear stress viscosity of the relativistic accretion disks around the rotating black holes. we calculate all non-zero components of the bulk tensor, shear tensor and shear stress viscosity in the equatorial plan in the BLF. We obtain the relations of the relativistic bulk tensor, shear tensor and shear stress viscosity in the terms of components of four velocity and derivatives, Christoffel symbols and metric components. To see the behaviorr of the components of relativistic bulk tensor, shear tensor and shear stress vis…
We consider an application of the tetrad formalism introduced by Cardall et al. [Phys. Rev. D 88 (2013) 023011] to the problem of a rigidly rotating relativistic gas in thermal equilibrium and discuss the possible applications of this formalism to relativistic lattice Boltzmann simulations. We present in detail the transformation to the comoving frame, the choice of tetrad, as well as the explicit calculation and analysis of the components of the equilibrium particle flow four-vector and of the equilibrium stress-energy tensor.
The properties of uniformly rotating white dwarfs are analyzed within the framework of general relativity. Hartle's formalism is applied to construct self-consistently the internal and external solutions to the Einstein equations. The mass, the radius, the moment of inertia and quadrupole moment of rotating white dwarfs have been calculated as a function of both the central density and rotation period of the star. The maximum mass of rotating white dwarfs for stable configurations has been obtained.
These lecture notes are intended to introduce the theory of rotating stars in general relativity. The focus is put on the theoretical foundations, with a detailed discussion of the spacetime symmetries, the choice of coordinates and the derivation of the equations of structure from the Einstein equation. The global properties of rotating stars (mass, angular momentum, redshifts, orbits, etc.) are also introduced.
Formulation of the Lagrangian approach is presented for studying features of motions of stellar bodies with non-zero rest mass in the vicinity of fast-spinning black holes. The structure of Lagrangian is discussed. The general method is applied to description of body motion in the Kerr model of space-time to transition to the problem of tidal disruption of elastic bodies by strong gravitational field.
We study oscillations and instabilities of relativistic stars using perturbation theory in general relativity and take into account the contribution of a dynamic spacetime. We present the oscillation spectrum as well as the critical values for the onset of the secular CFS instability of neutron stars, and propose universal relations for gravitational wave asteroseismology, which may help constrain the neutron star radius and/or the nuclear equation of state. The results are relevant for all stages during a neutron star's life but especially to nascent or remnant objects following a binary merg…
Rotating disks with nonzero radial pressure and finite radius are studied. The models are based in the Taub-NUT metric and constructed using the well-known ``displace, cut and reflect'' method. We find that the disks are made of perfect fluids with constant energy density and pressure. The energy density is negative, but the effective Newotnian density is possitive as the strong energy condition requires. We also find that the disks are not stable under radial perturbations and that there are regions of the disks where the particles move with superluminal velocities.
