A famous theorem of D. Orlov describes the derived bounded category of coherent sheaves on projective hypersurfaces in terms of an algebraic construction called graded matrix factorizations. In this article, I implement a proposal of E. Segal to prove Orlov's theorem in the Calabi-Yau setting using a globalization of the category of graded matrix factorizations (graded D-branes). Let X be a projective hypersurface. Already, Segal has established an equivalence between Orlov's category of graded matrix factorizations and the category of graded D-branes on the canonical bundle K of the ambient projective space. To complete the picture, I give an equivalence between the homotopy category of graded D-branes on K and Dcoh(X). This can be achieved directly and by deforming K to the normal bundle of X, embedded in K and invoking a global version of Knörrer periodicity. We also discuss an equivalence between graded D-branes on a general smooth quasi-projective variety and on the formal neighborhood of the singular locus of the zero fiber of the potential.
We extend Orlov's result that certain functors between derived categories of smooth projective varieties are Fourier--Mukai transforms to the case when those varieties are smooth and proper.
We prove a Kn"orrer periodicity type equivalence between derived factorization categories of gauged LG models, which is an analogy of a theorem proved by Shipman and Isik independently. As an application, we obtain a gauged LG version of Orlov's theorem describing a relationship between categories of graded matrix factorizations and derived categories of hypersurfaces in projective spaces, by combining the above Kn"orrer periodicity type equivalence and the theory of variations of GIT quotients due to Ballard, Favero and Katzarkov.
The Orlov spectrum is a new invariant of a triangulated category. It was introduced by D. Orlov building on work of A. Bondal-M. van den Bergh and R. Rouquier. The supremum of the Orlov spectrum of a triangulated category is called the ultimate dimension. In this work, we study Orlov spectra of triangulated categories arising in mirror symmetry. We introduce the notion of gaps and outline their geometric significance. We provide the first large class of examples where the ultimate dimension is finite: categories of singularities associated to isolated hypersurface singularities. Similarly, giv…
A conjecture of Orlov predicts that derived equivalent smooth projective varieties over a field have isomorphic Chow motives. The conjecture is known for curves, and was recently observed for surfaces by Huybrechts. In this paper we focus on threefolds over perfect fields, and unconditionally secure results, which are implied by Orlov's conjecture, concerning the geometric coniveau filtration, and abelian varieties attached to smooth projective varieties.
We extend Orlov's representability theorem on the equivalence of derived categories of sheaves to the case of smooth stacks associated to normal projective varieties with only quotient singularities.
Beginning with the theorems of Beilinson and Orlov on derived categories, we show how these lead naturally to Kuznetsov's beautiful theory of Homological Projective Duality. We then survey some examples.
Using Keel's presentation and Orlov's theorem, we give an inductive description of the derived category of moduli spaces of $n$--pointed stable curves of genus zero and some full exceptional collections in it. The detailed calculations are given for $\bar{M}_{0,6}$.
We prove that the category of representations of the N-Kronecker quiver and that of coherent sheaves on the noncommutative projective scheme of $R=k< X_1,...,X_N >/(\sum^N_{i=1}X_i^2)$ are derived equivalent. This equivalence is easily proved by applying Orlov's Theorem, on the other hand,in our proof, the quadratic relation $\sum_{i=1}^NX_i^2$ naturally arises from Auslander-Reiten Theory.
We give a noncommutative geometric description of the internal Hom dg-category in the homotopy category of dg-categories between two noncommutative projective schemes in the style of Artin-Zhang. As an immediate application, we give a noncommutative projective derived Morita statement along lines of Rickard and Orlov.
We give an exposition and generalization of Orlov's theorem on graded Gorenstein rings. We show the theorem holds for non-negatively graded rings which are Gorenstein in an appropriate sense and whose degree zero component is an arbitrary non-commutative right noetherian ring of finite global dimension. A short treatment of some foundations for local cohomology and Grothendieck duality at this level of generality is given in order to prove the theorem. As an application we give an equivalence of the derived category of a commutative complete intersection with the homotopy category of graded ma…
Orlov's famous representability theorem asserts that any fully faithful exact functor between the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves on smooth projective varieties is a Fourier-Mukai functor. In this paper we show that this result is false without the full faithfulness hypothesis.
We leverage the results of the prequel in combination with a theorem of D. Orlov to yield some results in Hodge theory of derived categories of factorizations and derived categories of coherent sheaves on varieties. In particular, we provide a conjectural geometric framework to further understand M. Kontsevich's Homological Mirror Symmetry conjecture. We obtain new cases of a conjecture of Orlov concerning the Rouquier dimension of the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on a smooth variety. Further, we introduce actions of $A$-graded commutative rings on triangulated categories and t…
We prove that integral projective curves with Cohen-Macaulay singularities over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero are determined by their triangulated category of perfect complexes. This partially extends a theorem of Bondal and Orlov to the case of singular projective varieties, and in particular shows that all integral complex projective curves are determined by their category of perfect complexes
We study matrix factorizations of a section W of a line bundle on an algebraic stack. We relate the corresponding derived category (the category of D-branes of type B in the Landau-Ginzburg model with potential W) with the singularity category of the zero locus of W generalizing a theorem of Orlov. We use this result to construct push-forward functors for matrix factorizations with relatively proper support.
We study the relationship between derived categories of factorizations on gauged Landau-Ginzburg models related by variations of the linearization in Geometric Invariant Theory. Under assumptions on the variation, we show the derived categories are comparable by semi-orthogonal decompositions and describe the complementary components. We also verify a question posed by Kawamata: we show that $D$-equivalence and $K$-equivalence coincide for such variations. The results are applied to obtain a simple inductive description of derived categories of coherent sheaves on projective toric Deligne-Mumf…
In this paper, we first introduce geometric operations for linear categories, and as a consequence generalize Orlov's blow up formula [O04] to possibly singular local complete intersection centres. Second, we introduce refined blowing up of linear category along base--locus, and show that this operation is dual to taking linear section. Finally, as an application we produce examples of Calabi--Yau manifolds which admits Calabi--Yau categories fibrations over projective spaces.
We study the derived categories of twisted supersingular K3 surfaces. We prove a derived crystalline Torelli theorem for twisted supersingular K3 surfaces, characterizing Fourier-Mukai equivalences in terms of isomorphisms between their associated K3 crystals. This is a positive characteristic analog of the Hodge-theoretic derived Torelli theorem of Orlov, and its extension to twisted K3 surfaces by Huybrechts and Stellari. We give applications to various questions concerning Fourier-Mukai partners, extending results of Căldăraru and Huybrechts and Stellari. We also give an exact formula for t…
We study matrix factorizations of locally free coherent sheaves on a scheme. For a scheme that is projective over an affine scheme, we show that homomorphisms in the homotopy category of matrix factorizations may be computed as the hypercohomology of a certain mapping complex. Using this explicit description, we give another proof of Orlov's theorem that there is a fully faithful embedding of the homotopy category of matrix factorizations into the singularity category of the corresponding zero subscheme. We also give a complete description of the image of this functor.
We observe that there is an equivalence between the singularity category of an affine complete intersection and the homotopy category of matrix factorizations over a related scheme. This relies in part on a theorem of Orlov. Using this equivalence, we give a geometric construction of the ring of cohomology operators, and a generalization of the theory of support varieties, which we call stable support sets. We settle a question of Avramov about which stable support sets can arise for a given complete intersection ring. We also use the equivalence to construct a projective resolution of a modul…
By generalizing the Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence for hypersurfaces, we can relate a Calabi-Yau complete intersection to a hybrid Landau-Ginzburg model: a family of isolated singularities fibered over a projective line. In recent years Fan, Jarvis, and Ruan have defined quantum invariants for singularities of this type, and Clader and Clader-Ross have provided a equivalence between these invariants and Gromov-Witten invariants of complete intersections. For Calabi-Yau complete intersections of two cubics, we show that this equivalence is directly related - via Chen character - to t…
The large variety of Fourier transforms in geometric algebras inspired the straight forward definition of ``A General Geometric Fourier Transform`` in Bujack et al., Proc. of ICCA9, covering most versions in the literature. We showed which constraints are additionally necessary to obtain certain features like linearity, a scaling, or a shift theorem. In this paper we extend the former results by a convolution theorem.
We prove among other things that a general Calabi-Yau hypersurface in projective space is not rationally swept out by abelian varieties of dimension greater than or equal to 2.
In this note, we propose a geometric analogue of Dirichlet's unit theorem on arithmetic varieties, that is, if X is a normal projective variety over a finite field and D is a pseudo-effective Q-Cartier divisor on X, does it follow that D is Q-effective? We also give affirmative answers on an abelian variety and a projective bundle over a curve.
We present a new geometric proof of Stanley's monotonicity theorem for lattice polytopes, using an interpretation of $δ$-polynomials of lattice polytopes in terms of orbifold Chow rings.
In this paper, we prove the weak positivity theorem in positive characteristic when the canonical ring of the geometric generic fiber $F$ is finitely generated and the Frobenius stable canonical ring of $F$ is large enough. As its application, we show the subadditivity of Kodaira dimensions in some new cases.
We study the Hochschild homology and cohomology of curved A-infinity algebras that arise in the study of Landau-Ginzburg (LG) models in physics. We show that the ordinary Hochschild homology and cohomology of these algebras vanish. To correct this we introduce modified versions of these theories, Borel-Moore Hochschild homology and compactly supported Hochschild cohomology. For LG models the new invariants yield the answer predicted by physics, shifts of the Jacobian ring. We also study the relationship between graded LG models and the geometry of hypersurfaces. We prove that Orlov's derived e…
Chevalley's theorem on the images of morphisms of schemes and the principle of quantifier elimination for the theory of algebraically closed fields are widely understood to be two perspectives on the same theorem. In this paper, we demonstrate that both results can easily be proven simultaneously, using a mixture of geometric and logical techniques. In doing so, we give logical meaning to geometric points of schemes and to finitely presented morphisms thereof, in a manner reminiscent of Spencer Breiner's logical schemes.
Let $R$ be a commutative ring: we explain the Beilinson-Bernstein localisation mechanism for sheaves of homogeneous twisted differential operators defined over a smooth, separated, locally of finite type $R$-scheme. As an application, we give a new proof of Duflo's theorem characterising the primitive ideals of the enveloping algebra of a complex semisimple Lie algebra.
Using our recent results on the algebraicity of the Hodge locus for variations of Hodge structures of level at least $3$, we improve the results of Lawrence-Venkatesh in direction of the refined Bombieri-Lang conjecture.
We describe a prototype of a new experimental GeoGebra command and tool, Discover, that analyzes geometric figures for salient patterns, properties, and theorems. This tool is a basic implementation of automated discovery in elementary planar geometry. The paper focuses on the mathematical background of the implementation, as well as methods to avoid combinatorial explosion when storing the interesting properties of a geometric figure.
We present a proof of Thue-Siegel-Roth's Theorem (and its more recent variants, such as those of Lang for number fields and that "with moving targets" of Vojta) as an application of Geometric Invariant Theory (GIT). Roth's Theorem is deduced from a general formula comparing the height of a semi-stable point and the height of its projection on the GIT quotient. In this setting, the role of the zero estimates appearing in the classical proof is played by the geometric semi-stability of the point to which we apply the formula.
In this paper we give a simpler proof of a deep theorem proved by Pellikan, Shen and van Wee that all linear codes are weakly algebraic-geometric using a theorem of B.Poonen.
We reprove the theorem of Feigin and Frenkel relating the center of the critical level enveloping algebra of the Kac-Moody algebra for a semisimple Lie algebra to opers (which are certain de Rham local systems with extra structure) for the Langlands dual group. Our proof incorporates a construction of Beilinson and Drinfeld relating the Feigin-Frenkel isomorphism to (more classical) Langlands duality through the geometric Satake theorem.
In this paper, we introduce an algebro-geometric formulation for Siegel's theorem using an improvement of Lang's version of Roth's theorem over finitely generated fields of characteristic zero. In fact, we prove that, for an affine open curve in an irreducible smooth curve of genus at least one, any finitely generated subgroup of the additive group of the affine ambient space intersects the open curve in only finitely many points. This was proved only for finitely generated subgroups defined over a localization of the ring of integers of a number field by Mahler and others.
We give an algebraic geometric proof of the Theorem of Ax and Kochen on p-adic diophantine equations in many variables. Unlike Ax-Kochen's proof, ours does not use any notions from mathematical logic and is based on weak toroidalization of morphisms. We also show how this geometric approach yields new proofs of the Ax-Kochen-Ersov transfer principle for local fields, and of quantifier elimination theorems of Basarab and Pas.
The Chabauty-Coleman method is a $p$-adic method for finding all rational points on curves of genus $g$ whose Jacobians have Mordell-Weil rank $r < g$. Recently, Edixhoven and Lido developed a geometric quadratic Chabauty method that was adapted by Spelier to cover the case of geometric linear Chabauty. We compare the geometric linear Chabauty method and the Chabauty-Coleman method and show that geometric linear Chabauty can outperform Chabauty-Coleman in certain cases. However, as Chabauty-Coleman remains more practical for general computations, we discuss how to strengthen Chabauty-Coleman t…
The purpose of this paper is to establish analogues of the classical Lefschetz Section Theorem for smooth tropical varieties. More precisely, we prove tropical analogues of the section theorems of Lefschetz, Andreotti-Frankel, Bott-Milnor-Thom, Hamm-Lê and Kodaira-Spencer, and the vanishing theorems of Andreotti-Frankel and Akizuki-Kodaira-Nakano. We start the paper by resolving a conjecture of Mikhalkin and Ziegler (2008) concerning the homotopy types of certain filtrations of geometric lattices, generalizing several known properties of full geometric lattices. This translates to a crucial in…
