Atomic wave packets in optical lattices which are both spatially finite and time-dependent exhibit many striking similarities with light pulses in photonic crystals. We analytically characterize the transmission properties of such a potential geometry for an ideal gas in terms of a position-dependent band structure. In particular, we find that at specific energies, wave packets at the center of the finite lattice may be enclosed by pairs of band gaps. These act as mirrors between which the atomic wave packet is reflected, thereby effectively yielding a matter wave cavity. We show that long trapping times may be obtained in such a resonator and investigate the collapse and revival dynamics of the atomic wave packet by numerical evaluation of the Schrödinger equation.
We discuss a simple example demonstrating that spontaneous emission from "space-time-superposed" atomic center-of-mass wave packets is nontrivially and time-dependent modified with respect to the standard dipole-pattern typical of "space-superposed" wave packets. Our approach provides an approximate description of a nonsimultaneous interaction of electromagnetic field with different parts of a wave packet.
We propose a wave packet basis for storing and processing several qubits of quantum information in a single multilevel atom. Using radially localized wave packet states in the Rydberg atom, we construct an orthogonal basis that is related to the usual energy level basis by a quantum Fourier transform. A transform-limited laser pulse that is short compared with the classical Kepler period of the system interacts mainly with the wave packet state localized near the atomic core, allowing selective control in this basis. We argue that wave packet control in this regime is useful for multilevel qua…
The problems of cavity atom optics in the presence of an external strong coherent field are formulated as the problems of potential scattering of doubly-dressed atomic wave packets. Two types of potentials produced by various multiphoton Raman processes in a high-finesse cavity are examined. As an application the deflection of dressed atomic wave by a cavity mode is investigated. New momentum distribution of the atoms is derived that depends from the parameters of coherent field as well as photon states in the cavity.
We present a generalized model for the evolution of atomic wave-packets in matter-wave interferometers. This method provides an efficient tool for analyzing the performance of atomic interferometers using atom clouds prepared in a trap as a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) or as a thermal ensemble. Predictions of the model for dynamic properties such as wave-packet size and phase are in excellent agreement with explicit numerical solutions of the non-linear Gross-Pitaevskii equations and enable fast calculations of interferometric performance in regimes where full numerical solutions become impr…
We propose a simple scheme capable of adiabatically splitting an atomic wave packet using two independent translating traps. Implemented with optical dipole traps, our scheme allows a high degree of flexibility for atom interferometry arrangements and highlights its potential as an efficient and high fidelity atom optical beam splitter.
We report on the realization of dynamical control of transport for ultra-cold Sr88 atoms loaded in an accelerated and amplitude-modulated 1D optical lattice. We tailor the energy dispersion of traveling wave packets and reversibly switch between Wannier-Stark localization and driven transport based on coherent tunneling. Within a Loschmidt-echo scheme where the atomic group velocities are reversed at once, we demonstrate a novel mirror for matter waves working independently of the momentum state and discuss possible applications to force measurements at micrometric scales.
A simple model allows us to study the nonclassical behavior of slowly moving atoms interacting with a quantized field. Atom and field become entangled and their joint state can be identified as a mesoscopic "Schroedinger-cat". By introducing appropriate observables for atom and field and by analyzing correlations between them based on a Bell-type inequality we can show the corresponding nonclassical behavior.
It is shown that the population Rabi-floppings in a lossless two-level atom, interacting with a monochromatic electromagnetic field, in general are convergent in time. The well-known continuous floppings take place because the restricted choosing of initial conditions, that is when the atom initially is chosen on ground or excited level before the interaction, simultaneously having a definite value of momentum there. The convergence of Rabi-floppings in atomic wave-packet-states is a direct consequence of Doppler effect on optical transition rates (Rabi-frequencies): it gradually leads to ''ir…
We study radial wave packets produced by short-pulsed laser fields acting on Rydberg atoms, using analytical tools from supersymmetry-based quantum-defect theory. We begin with a time-dependent perturbative calculation for alkali-metal atoms, incorporating the atomic-excitation process. This provides insight into the general wave packet behavior and demonstrates agreement with conventional theory. We then obtain an alternative analytical description of a radial wave packet as a member of a particular family of squeezed states, which we call radial squeezed states. By construction, these have c…
Coherent control of collective spontaneous emission in an extended atomic ensemble resonantly interacting with single-photon wave packets is analyzed. A scheme for coherent manipulation of collective atomic states is developed such that superradiant states of the atomic system can be converted into subradiant ones and vice versa. Possible applications of such a scheme for optical quantum state storage and single-photon wave packet shaping are discussed. It is shown that also in the absence of inhomogeneous broadening of the resonant line, single-photon wave packets with arbitrary pulse shape m…
We analyse the experiment by Hultgren et al. [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 87}, 031404 (2013)] on orbital alignment and quantum beats in coherently excited atomic fine-structure manifolds produced by short-pulse laser photodetachment of C$^-$, Si$^-$ and Ge$^-$ negative ions, and derive a formula that describes the beats. Analysis of the experimental data enables us to extract the non-coherent background contribution for each species, and indicates the need for a full density matrix treatment of the problem.
We analyze quantum entanglement of Stokes light and atomic electronic polarization excited during single-pass, linear-regime, stimulated Raman scattering in terms of optical wave-packet modes and atomic-ensemble spatial modes. The output of this process is confirmed to be decomposable into multiple discrete, bosonic mode pairs, each pair undergoing independent evolution into a two-mode squeezed state. For this we extend the Bloch-Messiah reduction theorem, previously known for discrete linear systems (S. L. Braunstein, Phys. Rev. A, vol. 71, 055801 (2005)). We present typical mode functions in…
We provide an intuitive interpretation of the optical Stern-Gerlach effect (OSGE) in the dressed-state point of view. We also analyze the effect of atomic damping in an experiment on the OSGE. We show that the atomic damping also causes the wave packet splitting, in a non-mechanical fashion, as opposed to the coherent process that is mechanical.
We show that a conspicuous wave packet of ultracold noninteracting Bosonic atoms emerges in a 1-dimensional parabolic optical lattice as in the setup of the Aarhus experiment [P. L. Pedersen ${\it et}$ ${\it al.}$, Phys. Rev. A ${\bf 88}$, 023620 (2013)], given the lattice height is harmonically modulated with a particular amplitude at a resonant frequency. We show that this wave packet, coined "${\it 4bandPWP}$" here, executes stable time-wise periodic motion for infinitely long time. We apply the Floquet theory to analyze the parameter dependence of ${\it 4bandPWP}$ in detail. Our analysis s…
By using a test-function method, we construct $n$ exact solutions of a quantum harmonic oscillator with a time-dependent "spring constant". Any $n$-th solution describes a wave-packet train consisting of $n+1$ packets. Its center oscillates like the classically harmonic oscillator with variable frequency, and width and highness of each packet change simultaneously. When the deformation is small, it behaves like a soliton train, and the large deformation is identified with collapse and revival of the wave-packet train.
The geometrical phase of a time-dependent singular oscillator is obtained in the framework of Gaussian wave packet. It is shown by a simple geometrical approach that the geometrical phase is connected to the classical nonadiabatic Hannay angle of the generalized harmonic oscillator.
The paper first discusses theoretically the off-resonance selective excitation method that is dependent on the atomic internal states and used to generate approximately a standard coherent state of harmonic oscillator. The coherent average method then is proposed to construct the state-selective trigger pulse. A state-selective trigger pulse can keep Gaussian shape unchanged but change in an internal-state-dependent form the center-of-mass position and/or momentum of an atomic Gaussian wave-packet motional state. A Gaussian wave-packet state is one of the simplest wave-packet states that can b…
We argue that the way to get the general solution of a Schrodinger equation in the presence of a time-dependent linear potential based on the Lewis-Riesenfeld framework is to use a Hermitian linear invariant operator. We demonstrate that the linear invariant proposed in p and q is an Hermitian operator which has the Gaussian wave packet as its eigenfunction.
We have found a new class of time dependent partial waves which are solutions of time dependent Schrödinger equation for three dimensional harmonic oscillator. We also showed the decomposition of coherent states of harmonic oscillator into these partial waves. This decomposition appears perticularly convenient for a description of the dynamics of a wave packet representing a particle with spin when the spin--orbit interaction is present in the hamiltonian. An example of an evolution of a localized wave packet into a torus and backwards, for a particular initial conditions is analysed in analyt…
Coherent manipulation of single-photon wave packets is essentially important for optical quantum communication and quantum information processing. In this paper, we realize controllable splitting and modulation of single-photon-level pulses by using a tripod-type atomic medium. The adoption of two control beams enable us to store one signal pulse into superposition of two distinct atomic collective excitations. By controlling the time delay between the two control pulses, we observe splitting of a stored wave packet into two temporally-distinct modes. By controlling the frequency detuning of t…
We present a program to simulate the dynamics of a wave packet interacting with a time-dependent potential. The time-dependent Schrödinger equation is solved on a one-, two-, or three-dimensional spatial grid using the split operator method. The program can be compiled for execution either on a single processor or on a distributed-memory parallel computer.
We investigate orbital alignment dynamics within the valence shell of atoms in coherently excited $j=3/2,1/2$ fine-structure manifolds generated by short-pulse photodetachment of F$^-$, Cl$^-$ and Br$^-$ anions. Using Keldysh-type theory, we calculate the density matrix of the residual atoms generated by few-cycle pulses, whose elements determine the populations and coherence among the electronic states. Our calculations demonstrate that the degree of atomic coherence can be represented by a near universal function of the ratio between the pulse duration $\tildeτ_p$ and the beat period $τ_{j'j…
The exact propagators of two one-dimensional systems with time-dependent external fields are presented by following the path-integral method. It is shown that the Bloch acceleration theorem can be generalized to the impulse-momentum theorem in quantum version. We demonstrate that an evolved Gaussian wave packet always keeps its shape in an arbitrary time-dependent homogeneous driven field. Moreover, that stopping and accelerating of a wave packet can be achieved by the pulsed field in a diabatic way.
We calculate the Wigner quasi-probability distribution for position and momentum, P_W^(n)(x,p), for the energy eigenstates of the standard infinite well potential, using both x- and p-space stationary-state solutions, as well as visualizing the results. We then evaluate the time-dependent Wigner distribution, P_W(x,p;t), for Gaussian wave packet solutions of this system, illustrating both the short-term semi-classical time dependence, as well as longer-term revival and fractional revival behavior and the structure during the collapsed state. This tool provides an excellent way of demonstrating…
An analytical approach to quantum mechanical wave packet dynamics of laser-driven particles is presented. The time-dependent Schroedinger equation is solved for an electron exposed to a linearly polarized plane wave of arbitrary shape. The calculation goes beyond the dipole approximation, such that magnetic field effects like wave packet shearing are included. Analytical expressions for the time-dependent widths of the wave packet and its orientation are established. These allow for a simple understanding of the wave packet dynamics.
An ultracold wave packet of bosonic atoms loaded into a travelling laser wave may form a many-atom soliton. This is disturbed by a homogeneous force field, for example by the inevitable gravitation. The wave packet is accelerated and therefore the laser frequency appears to be chirped in the rest frame of the atoms. We derive the effective nonlinear Schrödinger equation. It shows a time dependent nonlinearity coefficient which amounts to a damping or antidamping, respectively. The accelerated packet solution remains a soliton which changes its shape adiabatically. Similarly, an active shaping c…
We have performed time-dependent wave packet simulations of realistic Aharonov-Bohm (AB) devices with a quantum dot embedded in one of the arms of the interferometer. The AB ring can function as a measurement device for the intrinsic transmission phase through the quantum dot, however, care has to be taken in analyzing the influence of scattering processes in the junctions of the interferometer arms. We consider a harmonic quantum dot and show how the Darwin-Fock spectrum emerges as a unique pattern in the interference fringes of the AB oscillations.
Controls of waveforms (pulse durations) of single photons are important tasks for effectively interconnecting disparate atomic memories in hybrid quantum networks. So far, the waveform control of single photon that is entangled with an atomic memory remains unexplored. Here, we demonstrated control of waveform length of the photon that is entangled with an atomic spin-wave memory by varying light-atom interaction time in cold atoms. The Bell parameter S as a function of the duration of photon pulse is measured, which shows that violations of Bell equality can be achieved for the photon pulse i…
A pulse of matter waves may dramatically change its shape when traversing an absorbing barrier with time-dependent transparency. Here we show that this effect can be utilized for controlled manipulation of spatially-localized quantum states. In particular, in the context of atom-optics experiments, we explicitly demonstrate how the proposed approach can be used to generate spatially shifted, split, squeezed and cooled atomic wave packets. We expect our work to be useful in devising new interference experiments with atoms and molecules and, more generally, to enable new ways of coherent control…
We present a universal physical picture for describing storage and retrieval of photon wave packets in a Lambda-type atomic medium. This physical picture encompasses a variety of different approaches to pulse storage ranging from adiabatic reduction of the photon group velocity and pulse-propagation control via off-resonant Raman fields to photon-echo based techniques. Furthermore, we derive an optimal control strategy for storage and retrieval of a photon wave packet of any given shape. All these approaches, when optimized, yield identical maximum efficiencies, which only depend on the optica…
We study the output coupling of atoms from a magnetic trap into a linear potential slope of gravity using a weak radio-frequency field. We present a one-dimensional wave-packet model based on a continuous loading of a continuous spectrum of generalised eigenstates to describe the scenario. Analyzing the model, we show how the interference of the classical coupling fields maps to the interference of the resulting atomic streams.
We demonstrate an atomic interferometer in which the atom passes through a single-zone optical beam, consisting of a pair of bichromatic counter-propagating fields. During the passage, the atomic wave packets in two distinct internal states trace out split trajectories, guided by the optical beams, with the amplitude and spread of each wave-packet varying continuously, producing fringes that can reach a visibility close to unity. We show that the rotation sensitivity of this continuous interferometer (CI) can be comparable to that of the Borde-Chu Interferometer (BCI). The relative simplicity …
Quantum time dilation occurs when a clock moves in a superposition of relativistic momentum wave packets. We utilize the lifetime of an excited hydrogen-like atom as a clock to demonstrate how quantum time dilation manifests in a spontaneous emission process. The resulting emission rate differs when compared to the emission rate of an atom prepared in a mixture of momentum wave packets at order $v^2/c^2$. This effect is accompanied by a quantum correction to the Doppler shift due to the coherence between momentum wave packets. This quantum Doppler shift affects the spectral line shape at order…
We report on the measurement of the time required for a wave packet to tunnel through the potential barriers of an optical lattice. The experiment is carried out by loading adiabatically a Bose-Einstein condensate into a 1D optical lattice. A sudden displacement of the lattice by a few tens of nm excites the micromotion of the dipole mode. We then directly observe in momentum space the splitting of the wave packet at the turning points and measure the delay between the reflected and the tunneled packets for various initial displacements. Using this atomic beam splitter twice, we realize a chai…
We present a Maxwell-Bloch description of the dynamics of a light pulse propagating through a spatially inhomogeneous system consisting of alternating layers of EIT media and vacuum. We study the effect of a dynamical modulation of the EIT control field on the shape of the wave packet: interesting effects due to the presence of interfaces with group velocity mismatch are found. An effective description based on a continuity equation is developed. Modulation schemes that can be realized in ultracold atomic samples with standard experimental techniques are proposed and discussed.
We present a multichannel photoelectron interferometry technique based on trichromatic pulse shaping for unambiguous determination of quantum phases in multiphoton ionization (MPI) of potassium atoms. The colors of the laser field are chosen to produce three energetically separated photoelectron interferograms in the continuum. While the red pulse is two-photon resonant with the $3d$-state resulting in a (2+1) resonance-enhanced MPI (REMPI), a (1+2) REMPI occurs via the non-resonant intermediate $4p$-state with an initial green or blue pulse. We show that ionization via a non-resonant intermed…
We study the generation of atom vortex beams in the case where an atomic wave-packet, moving in free space, is diffracted from a properly tailored light mask with a spiral transverse profile. We show how such a diffraction scheme could lead to the production of an atomic Ferris wheel beam.
Localized quantum wave packets can be produced in a variety of physical systems and are the subject of much current research in atomic, molecular, chemical, and condensed-matter physics. They are particularly well suited for studying the classical limit of a quantum-mechanical system. The motion of a localized quantum wave packet initially follows the corresponding classical motion. However, in most cases the quantum wave packet spreads and undergoes a series of collapses and revivals. We present a generic treatment of wave-packet evolution, and we provide conditions under which various types …
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a method to prepare a nonspreading atomic wave packet. Our technique relies on a spatially modulated absorption constantly chiseling away from an initially broad de Broglie wave. The resulting contraction is balanced by dispersion due to Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. This quantum evolution results in the formation of a nonspreading wave packet of Gaussian form with a spatially quadratic phase. Experimentally, we confirm these predictions by observing the evolution of the momentum distribution. Moreover, by employing interferometric techniques, we…
We propose to shape biphoton wave packets with an electromagnetically induced grating in a four-level double-$Λ$ cold atomic system. We show that the induced hybrid grating plays an essential role in directing the new fields into different angular positions, especially to the zeroth-order diffraction. A number of interesting features appear in the shaped two-photon waveforms. For example, broadening or narrowing the spectrum would be possible in the proposed scheme even without the use of a cavity.
Transport and scattering phenomena in open quantum-systems with a continuous energy spectrum are conveniently solved using the time-dependent Schrodinger equation. In the time-dependent picture, the evolution of an initially localized wave-packet reveals the eigenstates and eigenvalues of the system under consideration. We discuss applications of the wave-packet method in atomic, molecular, and mesoscopic systems and point out specific advantages of the time-dependent approach. In connection with the familiar initial value formulation of classical mechanics, an intuitive interpretation of tran…
We study the one dimensional time dependent Schrödinger equation for a potential step with $E < V_0$. We obtain the wave is not instantaneously reflected, but for a few moment of time the wave packet penetrate into inaccessible classically region and then reflected. So it is shown that one can write the peneterated wave paket as superposition of incident and reflected wave packets like.
Using the time-dependent annihilation and creation operators, the invariant operators, for a free mass and an oscillator, we find the coherent-squeezed state representation of a travelling general Gaussian wave packet with initial expectation values, $x_0$ and $p_0$, of the position and momentum and variances, $Δx_0$ and $Δp_0$. The initial general Gaussian wave packet takes, up to a normalization factor, the form $e^{i p_0 x/\hbar} e^{- (1 \mp i δ) (x - x_0)^2 / 4 (Δx_0)^2}$, where $δ= \sqrt{(2Δx_0 Δp_0/\hbar)^2 -1}$ denotes a measure of deviation from the minimum uncertainty or the initial p…
We obtain time dependent $q$-Gaussian wave-packet solutions to a non linear Schrödinger equation recently advanced by Nobre, Rego-Montero and Tsallis (NRT) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106 (2011) 10601]. The NRT non-linear equation admits plane wave-like solutions ($q$-plane waves) compatible with the celebrated de Broglie relations connecting wave number and frequency, respectively, with energy and momentum. The NRT equation, inspired in the $q$-generalized thermostatistical formalism, is characterized by a parameter $q$, and in the limit $q \to 1$ reduces to the standard, linear Schrödinger equation. T…
Wave-packet scattering from a stationary potential is significantly modified when the wave-packet is subject to an external time-dependent force during the interaction. In the semiclassical limit, wave--packet motion is simply described by Newtonian equations and the external force can, for example, cancel the potential force making a potential barrier transparent. Here we consider wave-packet scattering from reflectionless potentials, where in general the potential becomes reflective when probed by an accelerated wave-packet. In the particular case of the recently-introduced class of complex …
We propose a novel platform for the investigation of quantum wave packet dynamics, offering a complementary approach to existing theoretical models and experimental systems. It relies on laser-cooled neutral atoms which orbit around an optical nanofiber in an optical potential produced by a red-detuned guided light field. We show that the atomic center-of-mass motion exhibits genuine quantum effects like collapse and revival of the atomic wave packet. As distinctive advantages, our approach features a tunable dispersion relation as well as straightforward readout for the wave packet dynamics a…
A new quantum mechanical description of the dynamics of wave packet under continuous measurement is formulated via Bohmian mechanics. The solution to this equation is found through a wave packet approach which establishes a direct correlation between a classical variable with a quantum variable describing the dynamics of the center of mass and the width of the wave packet. The approach presented in this paper gives a comparatively clearer picture than approaches using restrited path integrals and master equation approaches. This work shows how the extremely irregular character of classical cha…
We propose the suppression of dispersive spreading of wave packets governed by the free-space Schrödinger equation with a periodically pulsed nonlinear term. Using asymptotic analysis, we construct stroboscopically-dispersionless quantum states that are physically reminiscent of, but mathematically different from, the well-known one-soliton solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a constant (time-independent) nonlinearity. Our analytics are strongly supported by full numerical simulations. The predicted dispersionless wave packets can move with arbitrary velocity and can be realiz…
This article investigates some solutions of the time-dependent free Dirac equation. Visualizations of these solutions immediately reveal strange phenomena that are caused by the interference of positive- and negative-energy waves. The effects discussed here include the Zitterbewegung, the opposite direction of momentum and velocity in negative-energy wave packets, and the superluminal propagation of the wave packet's local maxima.
The effects of thermal diffuse scattering on the transmission and eventual diffraction of highly accelerated electrons are investigated with a method that incorporates the frozen phonon approximation to the exact numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. Unlike other methods in the related literature, in this approach the attenuation of diffraction features arises in a natural way by averaging over a number of wave-packet realizations, thus avoiding any additional experimentally obtained Debye-Waller factors or artificial modulations. Without loss of generality, the method…
Time evolution of wave packets built from the eigenstates of the Dirac equation for a hydrogenic system is considered. We investigate the space and spin motion of wave packets which, in the non-relativistic limit, are stationary states with a probability density distributed uniformly along the classical, elliptical orbit (elliptic WP). We show that the precession of such a WP, due to relativistic corrections to the energy eigenvalues, is strongly correlated with the spin motion. We show also that the motion is universal for all hydrogenic systems with an arbitrary value of the atomic number Z.
Two-particle scattering probabilities in tunneling scenarios with exchange interaction are analyzed with quasi-particle wave packets. Two initial one-particle wave packets (with opposite central momentums) are spatially localized at each side of a barrier. After impinging upon a tunneling barrier, each wave packet splits into transmitted and reflected components. When the initial two-particle anti-symmetrical state is defined as a Slater determinant any type of (normalizable) one-particle wave packet, it is shown that the probability of detecting two (identically injected) electrons at the sam…
In this tutorial we provide a short review of attosecond pulse characterization techniques and a pedagogical account of a recently proposed method called Pulse Analysis by Delayed Absorption (PANDA) [Pabst and Dahlström, Phys. Rev. A, 94, 13411 (2016)]. We discuss possible implementations of PANDA in alkali atoms using either principal quantum number wave packets or spin-orbit wave packets. The main merit of the PANDA method is that it can be used as a pulse characterization method that is free from atomic latency effects, such as scattering phase shifts and long-lived atomic resonances. Final…
