The problems of cavity atom optics in the presence of an external strong coherent field are formulated as the problems of potential scattering of doubly-dressed atomic wave packets. Two types of potentials produced by various multiphoton Raman processes in a high-finesse cavity are examined. As an application the deflection of dressed atomic wave by a cavity mode is investigated. New momentum distribution of the atoms is derived that depends from the parameters of coherent field as well as photon states in the cavity.
The coherent dynamics of relaxing spin qubits driven by a classical bichromatic field comprising a strong resonant component and a weaker component with a frequency close to the strong-field Rabi frequency is studied. The double dressing by the bichromatic field modifies dephasing and dissipation processes. We demonstrate that detuning of the weaker-field frequency from the strong-field Rabi frequency prolongs the decay of Rabi oscillations between some doubly dressed states. The sensitivity of Rabi oscillations to the modified detuning-dependent relaxation is illustrated for nitrogen-vacancy …
We propose a scheme to tailor nanostructured trapping potentials for ultracold atoms. Our trapping scheme combines an engineered extension of repulsive optical dipole forces at short distances and attractive Casimir-Polder forces at long distances between an atom and a nanostructured surface. This extended dipole force takes advantage of excited-state dressing by plasmonically-enhanced intensity to doubly dress the ground state and create a strongly repulsive potential with spatially tunable characteristics. In this work, we show that, under realistic experimental conditions, this method can b…
We report the first experimental demonstration of interference-induced spectral line elimination predicted by Zhu and Scully [Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 388 (1996)] and Ficek and Rudolph [Phys. Rev. A 60, 4245 (1999)]. We drive an exciton transition of a self-assembled quantum dot in order to realize a two-level system exposed to bichromatic laser field and observe nearly complete elimination of the resonance fluorescence spectral line at the driving laser frequency. This is caused by quantum interference between coupled transitions among the doubly dressed excitonic states, without population trapp…
Observations of a doubly driven V system probed to a fourth level in an N configuration are reported. A dressed state analysis is also presented. The expected three-peak spectrum is explored in a cold rubidium sample in a magneto-optic trap. Good agreement is found between the dressed state theory and the experimental spectra once light shifts and uncoupled absorptions in the rubidium system are taken into account.
In this work, robustness of controlled density of optical states in doubly driven artificial atoms is studied under phonon dissipation. By using both perturbative and polaron approaches, we investigate the influence of carrier-phonon interactions on the emission properties of a two-level solid-state emitter, simultaneously coupled to two intense distinguishable lasers. Phonon decoherence effects on the emission spectra are found modest up to neon boiling temperatures ($\sim 30$ K), as compared with photon generation at the Fourier transform limit obtained in absence of lattice vibrations (zero…
We analyse a system composed of a qubit coupled to electromagnetic fields of two high quality quantum oscillators. Particular realization of such a system is the superconducting qubit coupled to a transmission-line resonator driven by two signals with frequencies close to the resonator's harmonics. One strong signal is used for exciting the system to a high energetic state while the second weak signal is applied for probing effective eigenstates of the system. We demonstrate that a description of the system dynamics as doubly dressed qubit is applicable. Experiments show that in the case of hi…
We theoretically investigate the scattering of an attosecond electron wave packet launched by an attosecond pulse under the influence of an infrared laser field. As the electron scatters inside a spatially extended system, the dressing laser field controls its motion. We show that this interaction, which lasts just a few hundreds of attoseconds, clearly manifests itself in the spectral interference pattern between different quantum pathways taken by the outgoing electron. We find that the Coulomb-Volkov approximation, a standard expression used to describe laser-dressed photoionization, cannot…
We study the parametric interaction between a single Nitrogen-Vacancy electronic spin and a diamond mechanical resonator in which the spin is embedded. Coupling between spin and oscillator is achieved by crystal strain, which is generated upon actuation of the oscillator and which parametrically modulates the spins' energy splitting. Under coherent microwave driving of the spin, this parametric drive leads to a locking of the spin Rabi frequency to the oscillator mode in the megahertz range. Both the Rabi oscillation decay time and the inhomogeneous spin dephasing time increase by two orders o…
We provide an intuitive interpretation of the optical Stern-Gerlach effect (OSGE) in the dressed-state point of view. We also analyze the effect of atomic damping in an experiment on the OSGE. We show that the atomic damping also causes the wave packet splitting, in a non-mechanical fashion, as opposed to the coherent process that is mechanical.
Collective Chirped STIRAP in a Pair of Three-Level Atoms: Dressed-Manifold Dynamics and Compensation of the Rydberg-Rydberg Interaction-Induced Detuning
The interaction of a single-photon wave packet with an initially excited two-level atom in free space is studied in semiclassical and quantum approaches. It is shown that the final state of the field does not contain doubly occupied modes. The process of the atom's transition to the ground state may be accelerated, decelerated or even reversed by the incoming photon, depending on parameters. The spectrum of emitted radiation is close to the sum of the spectrum of the incoming single-photon wave packet and the natural line shape, with small and complicated deviations.
In Rydberg dressed ultra-cold gases, ground state atoms inherit properties of a weakly admixed Rydberg state, such as sensitivity to long-range interactions. We show that through hyperfine-state dependent interactions, a pair of atom clouds can evolve into a spin and subsequently into a spatial Schrödinger's cat state: The pair, containing 20 atoms in total, is in a coherent superposition of two configurations, with cloud locations separated by micrometers. The mesoscopic nature of the superposition state can be proven with absorption imaging, while the coherence can be revealed though recombi…
We present a propagator formalism to investigate the scattering of photons by a cavity QED system that consists of a single two-level atom dressed by a leaky optical cavity field. We establish a diagrammatic method to construct the propagator analytically. This allows us to determine the quantum state of the scattered photons for an arbitrary incident photon packet. As an application, we explicitly solve the problem of a single-photon packet scattered by an initially excited atom.
We introduce a novel method to investigate the stability of wave packet dynamics under perturbations of the Hamiltonian. Our approach relies on semiclassical approximations, but is non-perturbative. Two separate contributions to the quantum fidelity are identified: one factor derives from the dispersion of the wave packets, whereas the other factor is determined by the separation of a trajectory of the perturbed classical system away from a corresponding unperturbed trajectory. We furthermore estimate both contributions in terms of classical Lyapunov exponents and find a decay of fidelity that…
Strong coupling of molecules to the vacuum field of micro cavities can modify the potential energy surfaces opening new photophysical and photochemical reaction pathways. While the influence of laser fields is usually described in terms of classical field, coupling to the vacuum state of a cavity has to be described in terms of dressed photon-matter states (polaritons) which require quantized fields. We present a derivation of the non-adiabatic couplings for single molecules in the strong coupling regime suitable for the calculation of the dressed state dynamics. The formalism allows to use qu…
The concerted motion of two or more bound electrons governs atomic and molecular non-equilibrium processes and chemical reactions. It is thus a long-standing scientific dream to measure the dynamics of two bound correlated electrons in the quantum regime. Quantum wave packets were previously observed for single-active electrons on their natural attosecond timescales. However, at least two active electrons and a nucleus are required to address the quantum three-body problem. This situation is realized in the helium atom, but direct time-resolved observation of two-electron wave-packet motion re…
The quantum photodynamics of a simple diatomic molecule with a permanent dipole immersed within an optical cavity containing a quantized radiation field is studied in detail. The chosen molecule under study, lithium fluoride (LiF), is characterized by the presence of an avoided crossing between the two lowest $^1Σ$ potential energy curves (covalent-ionic diabatic crossing). Without field, after prompt excitation from the ground state $1\; ^1Σ$, the excited nuclear wave packet moves back and forth in the upper $2\; ^1Σ$ state, but in the proximity of the avoided crossing, the non-adiabatic coup…
