We show a spin superconductor (SSC) in ferromagnetic graphene as the counterpart to the charge superconductor, in which a spin-polarized electron-hole pair plays the role of the spin $2 (\hbar/2)$ `Cooper pair' with a neutral charge. We present a BCS-type theory for the SSC. With the `London-type equations' of the super-spin-current density, we show the existence of an electric `Meissner effect' against a spatial varying electric field. We further study a SSC/normal conductor/SSC junction and predict a spin-current Josephson effect.
We study spin transport in normal/ferromagnetic/normal graphene junctions where a gate electrode is attached to the ferromagnetic graphene. We find that due to the exchange field of the ferromagnetic graphene, spin current through the junctions has an oscillatory behavior with respect to the chemical potential in the ferromagnetic graphene, which can be tuned by the gate voltage. Especially, we obtain a controllable spin current reversal by the gate voltage. Our prediction of high controllability of spin transport in ferromagnetic graphene junction may contribute to the development of the spin…
The magnetic effects in ferromagnetic graphene basically depend on the principle of exchange interaction when ferromagntism is induced by depositing an insulator layer on graphene. Here we deal with the consequences of non-uniformity in the exchange coupling strength of the ferromagnetic graphene. We discuss how the in- homogeneity in the coordinate and momentum of the exchange vector field can provide interesting results in the conductivity analysis of the ferromagnetic graphene. Our analysis is based on the Kubo formalism of quantum transport.
The conditions for spontaneous magnetization in a single graphene sheet are discussed in the context of Mermin-Wagner theorem. It is rigorously proved that at any nonzero temperature the graphene monolayer is nonmagnetic as long as its intrinsic symmetry is preserved. Any electronic fluctuations breaking the pseudospin conservation law can be responsible for the existence of ferromagnetic order inside the graphene structure.
We study spin dependent transport through a magnetic bilayer graphene nanojunction configured as two dimensional normal/ferromagnetic/normal structure where the gate-voltage is applied on the layers of ferromagnetic graphene. Based on the fourband Hamiltonian, conductance is calculated by using Landauer Butikker formula at zero temperature. For parallel configuration of the ferromagnetic layers of bilayer graphene, the energy band structure is metallic and spin polarization reaches to its maximum value close to the resonant states, while for antiparallel configuration, the nanojunction behaves…
Electronic transport in a graphene-based ferromagnetic/normal/ferromagnetic junction is investigated by means of Landauer-Büttiker formulism and the nonequilibrium Green's function technique. For the zigzag edge case, the results show that the conductance is always larger than $e^{2}/h$ for the parallel configuration of lead magnetizations, but for the antiparallel configuration the conductance becomes zero because of the band-selective rule. So a magnetoresistance (MR) plateau emerges with the value 100% when the Fermi energy is located around the Dirac point. Besides, choosing narrower graph…
We propose and demonstrate that a EuO-induced and top-gated graphene ferromagnetic junction can be simultaneously operated as a spin filter as well as a spin valve. We attribute such a remarkable result to a coexistence of a half-metal band and a common energy gap for opposite spins in ferromagnetic graphene. We show that, both the spin filter and the spin valve can be effectively controlled by a back gate voltage, and they survive for practical metal contacts and finite temperature. Specifically, larger single spin currents and on-state currents can be reached with contacts with work function…
Magnetic gates in close proximity to graphene can induce ferromagnetic correlations. We study the effect of such induced magnetization dependent Zeeman splittings on the graphene transport properties. We estimate that induced spin splittings of the order of Δ~ 5 meV could be achieved with the use of magnetic insulator gates, e.g. EuO-gates, deposited on top of graphene. We demonstrate that such splittings in proximity induced ferromagnetic graphene could be determined directly from the tunneling resonances in the linear response conductance, as the top gate creates also a tunable barrier in th…
We study the spin-wave excitations near the zigzag edge of graphene. It is rather interesting that we obtain a single branch of relativistic ferromagnetic magnon due to the presence of the open boundary. Note that magnons in antiferomagnets appear in pairs, while the single brach magnon in ferromagnets does not have relativistic dispersion. Thus, the magnon near the zigzag edge of graphene is a hybrid of both, signaling its intrinsic property as a boundary excitation that must be embedded in a higher dimensional bulk system.
We study transport in ferromagnetic-superconductor/normal-metal systems. It is shown that charge and spin currents are pumped from ferromagnetic superconductors into adjacent normal metals by adiabatic changes in the order parameters induced by external electromagnetic fields. Spin and charge pumping identify the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter, e.g., singlet pairing or triplet pairing with opposite or equal spin pairing. Consequences for ferromagnetic-resonance experiments are discussed.
Thermopower of graphene-superconductor (GS) junction is analyzed within the extended Blonder- Tinkham-Klapwijk formalism. Within this approach we have also calculated the temperature de- pendence of the zero-bias conductance for GS junction. Both quantities reflect quasi-relativistic nature of massless Dirac fermions in graphene. Both, the linear and the non-linear regimes are considered.
In this paper, we propose a practical way to stabilize half-hydrogenated graphene (graphone). We show that the dipole moments induced by an hexagonal-boron nitride (h-BN) substrate on graphene stabilize the hydrogen atoms on one sublattice of the graphene layer and suppress the migration of the absorbed hydrogen atoms. Based upon first principle spin polarized density of states (DOS) calculations, we show that the half hydrogenated graphene (graphone) obtained in different graphene-h-BN heterostructures exhibits a half metallic state. We propose to use this new exotic material for spin valve a…
Graphene-based materials show promise for spintronic applications due to their potentially large spin coherence length. On the other hand, because of their small intrinsic spin-orbit interaction, an external magnetic source is desirable in order to perform spin manipulation. Because of the flat nature of graphene, the proximity interaction with a ferromagnetic insulator (FI) surface seems a natural way to introduce magnetic properties into graphene. Exploiting the peculiar electronic properties of bilayer graphene coupled with FIs, we show that it is possible to devise very efficient gate-tuna…
Graphene is a promising candidate for building fast and ultra-sensitive bolometric detectors due to its weak electron-phonon coupling and low heat capacity. In order to realize a practical graphene-based bolometer, several important issues, including the nature of radiation response, coupling efficiency to the radiation and the thermal conductance need to be carefully studied. Addressing these issues, we present graphene-superconductor junctions as a viable option to achieve efficient and sensitive bolometers, with the superconductor contacts serving as hot electron barriers. For a graphene-su…
We investigate spin transport through ferromagnetic graphene vertical heterostructures where a sandwiched tunneling layer is either a normal or ferroelectric insulator. We show that the spin-polarization of the tunneling current is electronically controlled via gate voltages. We also demonstrate that the tunneling current of Dirac fermions can be prohibited when the spin configuration of ferromagnetic graphene sheets is opposite. The giant electroresistance can thus be developed by using the proposed heterostructure in this study. The effects of temperature on the spin transport and the giant …
We study the spin dynamics of a ferromagnetic insulator on which graphene is placed. We show that the Gilbert damping is enhanced by the proximity exchange coupling at the interface. The modulation of the Gilbert damping constant is proportional to the product of the spin-up and spin-down densities of states of graphene. Consequently, the Gilbert damping constant in a strong magnetic field oscillates as a function of the external magnetic field that originates from the Landau level structure of graphene. We find that a measurement of the oscillation period enables the strength of the exchange …
We investigate magnetotransport in a ferromagnetic/normal/ferromagnetic graphene junction where a gate electrode is attached to the normal segment. It is shown that the charge conductance can be maximal at an antiparallel configuration of the magnetizations. Moreover, we demonstrate that both the magnitude and the sign of the spin-transfer torque can be controlled by means of the gate voltage in the normal segment. In this way, the present system constitutes a spin-transfer torque transistor. These anomalous phenomena are attributed to the combined effect of the exchange field and the Dirac di…
The spontaneous self-consistent generation of axial current and corresponding dipole-like magnetic field in a planar electron-positron system similar to graphene and related hetero-structures doped by charged impurity with charge $Z$ is explored. It is shown that this effect takes place for $Z \geq Z^{\ast}$ with $Z^{\ast}$ being a peculiar analogue of the Curie point in ferromagnetics. The properties of induced ferromagnetic state are studied in detail. It is shown also that the arising this way magnetic dipole leads to a significant decrease of the total Casimir (vacuum) energy of the system…
In this study, based on the self-energy method and the total energy calculation, the indirect exchange coupling between two semi-infinite ferromagnetic strips (FM electrodes) separated by metallic graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) is investigated. In order to form a FM/GNR/FM junction, a graphitic region of finite length is coupled to the FM electrodes along graphitic zigzag or armchair interfaces of width $N$. The numerical results show that, the exchange coupling strength which can be obtained from the difference between the total energies of electrons in the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic co…
We report the investigation of electron transport through a four-terminal graphene-superconductor hybrid system. Due to the quantum interference of the reflected holes from two graphene-superconductor interfaces with phase difference $θ$, it is found that the specular Andreev reflection vanishes at $θ=0$ while the Andreev retroreflection disappears at $θ=π$. This means that the retroreflection and specular reflection can be easily controlled and separated in this device. In addition, due to the diffraction effect in the narrow graphene nanoribbon, the reflected hole can exit from both graphene…
Spin, anomalous, and valley Hall effects in graphene-based hybrid structures are studied theoretically within the Green function formalism and linear response theory. Two different types of hybrid systems are considered in detail: (i) graphene/boron nitride/cobalt(nickel), and (ii) graphene/YIG. The main interest is focused on the proximity-induced exchange interaction between graphene and magnetic substrate and on the proximity-enhanced spin-orbit coupling. The proximity effects are shown to have a significant influence on the electronic and spin transport properties of graphene. To find the …
Coherent spin-dependent transport through a junction containing of Normal/Ferromagnetic/Normal bilayer graphene nanoribbon with zigzag edges is investigated by using Landauer formalism. In a more realistic set-up, the exchange field is induced by two ferromagnetic insulator strips deposited on the ribbon edges while a perpendicular electric field is applied by the top gated electrodes. Our results show that, for antiparallel configuration, a band gap is opened giving rise a semiconducting behavior, while for parallel configuration, the band structure has no band gap. As a result, a giant magne…
Superconductor-Ferromagnetic-Superconductor (SFS) Josephson junctions are known to exhibit a transition between $π$ and 0 states. In this note we find the $π-0$ phase diagram of an SFS junction depending on the transparency of an intermediate insulating layer (I). We show that in general, the Josephson critical current is nonzero at the $π-0$ transition temperature. Contributions to the current from the two spin channels nearly compensate each other and the first harmonic of the Josephson current as a function of phase difference is suppressed. However, higher harmonics give a nonzero contribu…
We predict a specific type of charge Hall effect in undoped ferromagnetic graphene that is generated by the spin Hall mechanism in the absence of an external magnetic field. The essential feature is the so-called spin chiral configuration of the spin subbands in such a magnetic material where carriers with opposite spin direction are of different type of electron-like or hole-like. Within the semiclassical theory of spin-orbital dynamics of electrons, we obtain that a longitudinal electric field can produce a spin-orbit transverse current of pure charge with no polarization of the spin and the…
Carbon (C) doped hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) has been experimentally reported to be ferromagnetic at room temperature. Substitution by C in hBN has been also reported to form islands of graphene. In this work we derive a mechanistic understanding of ferromagnetism with graphene islands in hBN from first principles and mean-field Hubbard model. We find a general property, that in bipartite lattices where the sublattices differ in on-site energies, as in hBN, the ordering between local magnetic moments can be substantial and predominantly anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) if they are embedded in the sa…
We performed tunneling spectroscopy measurements of graphene coupled to niobium/niobium-nitride superconducting electrodes. Due to the proximity effect, the graphene density of states depends on the phase difference between the superconductors and exhibits a hard induced gap at zero phase, consistent with a continuum of Andreev bound states. At energies larger than the superconducting gap, we observed phase-dependent energy levels displaying the Coulomb blockade effect, which are interpreted as arising from spurious quantum dots, presumably embedded in the heterostructures and coupled to the p…
We build a tight-binding Hamiltonian describing Co/Ni over graphene, contemplating ATOP (a Co/Ni atom on top of each Carbon atom of one graphene sublattice) and HCP (one Co/Ni atom per Graphene plaquette) configurations. For the ATOP configuration the orbitals involved, for the Co/Ni, are the $d_{z^2-r^2}$ which most strongly couple to one graphene sublattice and the $d_{xz}$, $d_{yz}$ orbitals that couple directly to the second sublattice site. Such configuration is diagonal in pseudo-spin and spin space, yielding electron doping of the graphene and antiferro-magnetic ordering in the primitiv…
We predict a quantum spin Hall effect (QSHE) in the ferromagnetic graphene under a magnetic field. Unlike the previous QSHE, this QSHE appears in the absence of any spin-orbit interaction, thus, arrived from a different physical origin. The previous QSHE is protected by the time-reversal (T) invariance. This new QSHE is protected by the CT invariance, where C is the charge conjugation operation. Due to this QSHE, the longitudinal resistance exhibits quantum plateaus. The plateau values are at 1/2, 1/6, 3/28, ..., (in the unit of $h/e^2$), depending on the filling factors of the spin-up and spi…
Transport properties of graphene - superconductor junction has been studied extensively to understand the interplay of the relativistic Dirac quasiparticles and superconductivity. Though shot noise measurements in graphene has been performed to realize many theoretical predictions, both at zero magnetic field as well as quantum Hall (QH) regime, its junction with superconductor remain unexplored. Here, we have carried out the shot noise measurements in an edge contacted bilayer graphene - Niobium superconductor junction at zero magnetic field as well as QH regime. At the Dirac point we have ob…
This work presents a novel approach to describe spectral properties of graphene layers with well defined edges. We microscopically analyze the boundary problem for the continuous Bogoliubov-de Gennes-Dirac (BdGD) equations and derive the Green functions for normal and superconducting graphene layers. Importing the idea used in tight-binding (TB) models of a microscopic hopping that couples different regions, we are able to set up and solve an algebraic Dyson's equation describing a graphene-superconductor junction. For this coupled system we analytically derive the Green functions and use them…
We study a simple microscopic model for thin, ferromagnetic, metallic layers on semi-infinite bulk superconductor. We find that for certain values of the exchange spliting, on the ferromagnetic side, the ground states of such structures feature spontaneously induced spin polarized currents. Using a mean-field theory, which is selfconsistent with respect to the pairing amplitude $χ$, spin polarization $\vec{m}$ and the spontaneous current $\vec{j}_s$, we show that not only there are Andreev bound states in the ferromagnet but when their energies $E_n$ are near zero they support spontaneous curr…
Motivated by the recent experiments [Scientific reports 6, 23051 (2016), Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 096602 (2015)], we theoretically investigate Cooper pair splitting current in a graphene based Cooper pair beam splitter geometry. By considering the graphene based superconductor as an entangler device, instead of normal (2D) BCS superconductor, we show that the Cooper pair splitting current mediated by Crossed Andreev process is amplified compared to its normal superconductor counterpart. This amplification is attributed to the strong suppression of local normal Andreev reflection process (arising …
By combining analytic and numerical methods, edge states on a finite width graphene ribbon in a magnetic field are studied in the framework of low-energy effective theory that takes into account the possibility of quantum Hall ferromagnetism (QHF) gaps and dynamically generated Dirac-like masses. The analysis is done for graphene ribbons with both zigzag and armchair edges. The characteristic features of the spectrum of the edge states in both these cases are described. In particular, the conditions for the existence of the gapless edge states are established. Implications of these results for…
The quantum Hall regime of graphene has many unusual properties. In particular, the presence of a Zeeman field opens up a region of energy within the zeroth Landau level, where the spin-up and spin-down states localized at a single edge propagate in opposite directions. We show that when these edge states are coupled to an s-wave superconductor, the transport of charge carriers is spin-filtered. This spin-filtering effect can be traced back to the interplay of specular Andreev reflections and Andreev retro-reflections in the presence of a Zeeman field.
We report the fabrication of one-dimensional (1D) ferromagnetic edge contacts to two-dimensional (2D) graphene/h-BN heterostructures. While aiming to study spin injection/detection with 1D edge contacts, a spurious magnetoresistance signal was observed, which is found to originate from the local Hall effect in graphene due to fringe fields from ferromagnetic edge contacts and in the presence of charge current spreading in the nonlocal measurement configuration. Such behavior has been confirmed by the absence of a Hanle signal and gate-dependent magnetoresistance measurements that reveal a chan…
We investigate the electrical conductivity of spin-polarized graphene in the presence of short-ranged magnetic scatterers within the relaxation time approximation and the semi-classical Boltzmann approach. Spin-flip scattering of the itinerant electrons from the majority spin sub-band into the minority one results in a minimum in the electrical resistivity at a finite temperature. While this behavior is reminiscent of the renowned Kondo effect, it has an entirely different origin and differs from the Kondo effect in several aspects. In particular, unlike the Kondo effect, this is a single part…
In this article we study the ferromagnetic behavior of ABC-stacked trilayer graphene. This is done using a nearest-neighbor tight-binding model, in the presence of long-range Coulomb interactions. For a given electron-electron interaction g and doping level n, we determine whether the total energy is minimized for a paramagnetic or ferromagnetic configuration of our variational parameters. The g versus n phase diagram is first calculated for the unscreened case. We then include the effects of screening using a simplified expression for the fermion bubble diagram. We show that ferromagnetism in…
We study the interband transport in a superconducting device composed of graphene with EuO-induced exchange interaction. We show that pure crossed Andreev reflection can be generated exclusively without the parasitic local Andreev reflection and elastic cotunnelling over a wide range of bias and Fermi levels in an EuO-graphene/superconductor/EuO-graphene device. The pure non-local conductance exhibits rapid on/off switching and oscillatory behavior when the Fermi levels in the normal and the superconducting leads are varied. The oscillation reflects the quasiparticle propagation in the superco…
The interplay of graphene and superconductivity has attracted great interest for understanding the two-dimensional Dirac Fermion physics and for superconducting device applications. In previous work, graphene-superconductor junctions fabricated on standard SiO2 substrates were highly disordered. Due to charge carrier scattering and potential fluctuations, the expected intrinsic properties of graphene combined with superconductors remained elusive to experimental observations. We propose suspended graphene-superconductor junctions as an effective solution to the problem. Here, we show the fabri…
We study electronic transport in graphene/ferromagnetic insulator hybrid devices. The system comprises an armchair graphene nanoribbon with a lens-shaped EuO ferromagnetic insulator layer deposited on top of it. When the device supports a large number of propagating modes, the proximity exchange interaction of electrons with the magnetic ions of the ferromagnetic insulator results in electrons being spatially localised at different spots depending on their spin. We found the spin-dependent electron focusing is robust under moderate edge disorder. A spin-polarised electric current can be genera…
Graphene on an insulating ferromagnetic substrate---ferromagnetic insulator or ferromagnetic metal with a tunnel barrier---is expected to exhibit giant proximity exchange and spin-orbit couplings. We use a realistic transport model of charge-disorder scattering and solve the linearized Boltzmann equation numerically exactly for the anisotropic Fermi contours of modified Dirac electrons to find magnetotransport signatures of these proximity effects: proximity anisotropic magnetoresistance, inverse spin-galvanic effect, and the planar Hall resistivity. We establish the corresponding anisotropies…
This article shows that the spin-to-charge current conversion in single-layer graphene (SLG) by means of the inverse Rashba-Edelstein effect (IREE) is made possible with the integration of this remarkable 2D-material with the unique ferrimagnetic insulator yttrium iron garnet (YIG = $Y_{3}Fe_{5}O_{12}$) as well as with the ferromagnetic metal permalloy (Py = $Ni_{81}Sb_{19}$). By means of X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) techniques, we show that the carbon atoms of the SLG acquires an induced magnetic moment due to the proximity effect with the magneti…
We theoretically investigate spin transport at the interface between the ferromagnetic insulator(FI) and a superconductor(SC). Considering a simple FI-SC interface model, we derive formulas for the spin current and spin-current noise induced by microwave irradiation (spin pumping) or the temperature gradient (the spin Seebeck effect). We show how the superconducting coherence factor affects the temperature dependence of the spin current. We also calculate the spin-current noise in thermal equilibrium and in non-equilibrium states induced by the spin pumping, and compare them quantitatively for…
We have tuned in situ the proximity effect in a single graphene layer coupled to two Pt/Ta superconducting electrodes. An annealing current through the device changed the transmission coefficient of the electrode/graphene interface, increasing the probability of multiple Andreev reflections. Repeated annealing steps improved the contact sufficiently for a Josephson current to be induced in graphene.
We previously show [JETP Letters, {\bf 114}, 763 (2021)] that a graphene sample placed on a ferromagnetic substrate demonstrates a cooperative magnetoelectronic instability. The instability induces a gap in the electronic spectrum and a canting deformation of the magnetization near the graphene-substrate interface. In this paper we prove that the interaction between the electrons in graphene strongly enhances the instability. Our estimates suggest that in the presence of even a moderate interaction the instability can be sufficiently pronounced to be detected experimentally in a realistic sett…
Room-temperature ferromagnetic semiconductor is vital in nonvolatile digital circuits and it can provide an idea system where we can make use of both charge and spin of electrons. However, seeking room-temperature ferromagnetic semiconductors is still just an appealing idea that has never been realized in practice up to now. Here we demonstrate that graphene monolayer, hybridized with underlying Ni(111) substrate, is the room-temperature ferromagnetic semiconductor that has been continuously searched for decades. Our spin-polarized scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) experiments, complemented…
We calculated a spin-polarized conductance in the almost unexplored nanostructure "high temperature ferromagnetic insulator/ graphene/ ferroelectric film" with a special attention to the impact of electric polarization rotation in a strained multiaxial ferroelectric film. The rotation and value of polarization vector are controlled by a misfit strain. We proposed a phenomenological model, which takes into account the shift of the Dirac point due to the proximity of ferromagnetic insulator and uses the Landauer formula for the conductivity of the graphene channel. We derived analytical expressi…
We have presented here the consequences of the non-uniform exchange field on the spin transport issues in spin chiral configuration of ferromagnetic graphene. Taking resort to the spin orbit coupling (SOC) term and non-uniform exchange coupling term we are successful to express the expression of Hall conductivity in terms of the exchange field and SOC parameters through the Kubo formula approach. However, for a specific configuration of the exchange parameter we have evaluated the Berry curvature of the system. We also have paid attention to the study of SU(2) gauge theory of ferromagnetic gra…
Graphene has been predicted to develop a magnetic moment by proximity effect when placed on a ferromagnetic film, a promise that could open exciting possibilities in the fields of spintronics and magnetic data recording. In this work, we study in detail the interplay between the magnetoresistance of graphene and the magnetization of an underlying ferromagnetic insulating film. A clear correlation between both magnitudes is observed but we find, through a careful modelling of the magnetization and the weak localization measurements, that such correspondence can be explained by the effects of th…
Ferromagnetic single electron transistors with Al islands and orthogonal ferromagnetic leads (Co) are fabricated using ebeam lithography followed by shadow evaporation techniques. I-V characteristics exhibit typical single electron tunneling effects. Transport measurements performed in external magnetic field show that, when the two ferromagnetic leads are in antiparallel configuration, spin imbalance leads to a suppression of superconductivity.
We investigate the many-body effects of a magnetic adatom in ferromagnetic graphene by using the numerical renormalization group method. The nontrivial band dispersion of ferromagnetic graphene gives rise to interesting Kondo physics different from that in conventional ferromagnetic materials. For a half-filled impurity in undoped graphene, the presence of ferromagnetism can bring forth Kondo correlations, yielding two kink structures in the local spectral function near the Fermi energy. When the spin splitting of local occupations is compensated by an external magnetic field, the two Kondo ki…
Graphene is a promising candidate for applications in spintronics. In this paper, Density Functional Theory method is used to calculate the band structure and magnetic properties of graphene on Ni(111). Our results show that once there is antiferromagnetic order in graphene, an external electric field at the order of 10^9 V/m can induce a gap width difference of tens of meV for opposite spin states near the Fermi surface.
We explore ways in which the close proximity between graphene sheets and monolayers of 2D superconductors can lead to hybridization between their collective excitations. We consider heterostructures formed by combinations of graphene sheets and 2D superconductor monolayers. The broad range of energies in which the graphene plasmon can exist, together with its tunability, makes such heterostrucutres promising platforms for probing the many-body physics of superconductors. We show that the hybridization between the graphene plasmon and the Bardasis-Schrieffer mode of a 2D superconductor results …
We investigate ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) modulation in $d$-wave superconductor (SC)/ferromagnetic insulator (FI) bilayer systems theoretically. The modulation of the Gilbert damping in these systems reflects the existence of nodes in the $d$-wave SC and shows power-law decay characteristics within the low-temperature and low-frequency limit. Our results indicate the effectiveness of use of spin pumping as a probe technique to determine the symmetry of unconventional SCs with high sensitivity for nanoscale thin films.
Edge contact geometries are thought to yield ultralow contact resistances in most non-ferromagnetic metal-graphene interfaces owing to their large metal-graphene coupling strengths. Here, we examine the contact resistance of edge- versus surface-contacted ferromagnetic metal-graphene interfaces (i.e. nickel- and cobalt-graphene interfaces) using both single-layer and few-layer graphene. Good qualitative agreement is obtained between theory and experiment. In particular, in both theory and experiment, we observe that the contact resistance of edge-contacted ferromagnetic metal-graphene interfac…
We investigated the electrical transport properties of superconductor-graphene-superconductor (SGS) Josephson junctions. In low voltage bias, we observed conventional proximity-coupled Josephson effect, such as the supercurrent flow through the graphene, sub-gap structure of differential conductance due to Andreev reflection, and periodic modulation of the critical current Ic with perpendicular magnetic field H to the graphene. In high bias above the superconducting gap voltage, however, we also observed an anomalous jump of the differential conductance, the voltage position of which is sensit…
The phase diagram of a biased graphene bilayer is computed and the existence of a ferromagnetic phase is discussed both in the critical on-site interaction $U_{c}$ versus doping density and versus temperature. We show that in the ferromagnetic phase the two planes have unequal magnetization and that the electronic density is hole like in one plane and electron like in the other. We give evidence for a \emph{first-order} phase transition between paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases induced by doping at zero temperature.
We study the influence of magnetic scattering on the Josephson critical current, Ic, in a superconductor/ferromagnetic metal/superconductor (SFS) junction by a tunneling Hamiltonian approach. An analytical formula of Ic is given in the fourth order perturbation theory as regards the tunneling matrix element. The Ic exhibits the damped oscillatory dependence on the thickness of the ferromagnetic metal, d, and shows the transition between 0- and pi-states with d. When the superconducting transition temperature is comparable to the ferromagnetic Curie temperature, the period of oscillation is obv…
Using the Bogoliubov de-Gennes formalism, we investigate the charge and spin-dependent thermoelectric effects in superconductor graphene junctions. Results demonstrate that despite normal-superconductor junctions, there is a temperature-dependent spin thermopower both in the graphene-based ferromagnetic-superconductor (F-S) and ferromagnetic-Rashba spin-orbit region-superconductor (F-RSO-S) junctions. It is also shown that in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction, the charge and spin-dependent Seebeck coefficients can reach to their maximum up to 3.5$k_B/e$ and 2.5$k_B/e$, respectively…
Here we present an angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), x-ray absorption spec-troscopy (XAS), and density-functional theory (DFT) investigations of water and ammonia ad-sorption on graphene/Ni(111). Our results on graphene/Ni(111) reveal the existence of interface states, originating from the strong hybridization of the graphene π and spin-polarized Ni 3d valence band states. ARPES and XAS data of the H2O (NH3)/graphene/Ni(111) system give an information about the kind of interaction between adsorbed molecules and graphene on Ni(111). The presented experimental data are compared …
We report the study of ballistic transport in normal metal/graphene/superconductor junctions in edge-contact geometry. While in the normal state, we have observed Fabry-Pérot resonances suggesting that charge carriers travel ballistically, the superconducting state shows that the Andreev reflection at the graphene/superconductor interface is affected by these interferences. Our experimental results in the superconducting state have been analyzed and explained with a modified Octavio-Tinkham-Blonder-Klapwijk model taking into account the magnetic pair-breaking effects and the two different inte…
