The bondage number b(G) of a graph G is the smallest number of edges of G whose removal from G results in a graph having the domination number larger than that of G. We show that, for a graph G having the maximum vertex degree $Δ(G)$ and embeddable on an orientable surface of genus h and a non-orientable surface of genus k, $b(G)\le \min\{Δ(G)+h+2, Δ(G)+k+1\}$. This generalizes known upper bounds for planar and toroidal graphs.
The bondage number $b(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest number of edges whose removal from $G$ results in a graph with larger domination number. Let $G$ be embeddable on a surface whose Euler characteristic $χ$ is as large as possible, and assume $χ\leq0$. Gagarin-Zverovich and Huang have recently found upper bounds of $b(G)$ in terms of the maximum degree $Δ(G)$ and the Euler characteristic $χ(G)=χ$. In this paper we prove a better upper bound $b(G)\leqΔ(G)+\lfloor t\rfloor$ where $t$ is the largest real root of the cubic equation $z^3 + z^2 + (3χ- 8)z + 9χ- 12=0$; this upper bound is asympt…
The forgotten topological index of a graph $G$, denoted by $F(G)$, is defined as the sum of weights $d(u)^{2}+d(v)^{2}$ over all edges $uv$ of $G$ , where $d(u)$ denotes the degree of a vertex $u$. In this paper, we give sharp upper bounds of the F-index (forgotten topological index) over bicyclic graphs, in terms of the order and maximum degree.
The aim of this paper is to obtain new inequalities for a large family of topological indices restricted to unicyclic graphs and to characterize the set of extremal unicyclic graphs with respect to them. This family includes variable first Zagreb, variable sum exdeg, multiplicative second Zagreb and Narumi-Katayama indices. Our main results provide upper and lower bounds for these topological indices on unicyclic graphs, fixing or not the maximum degree or the number of pendant vertices.
A simple topological graph T = (V(T), E(T)) is a drawing of a graph in the plane where every two edges have at most one common point (an endpoint or a crossing) and no three edges pass through a single crossing. Topological graphs G and H are isomorphic if H can be obtained from G by a homeomorphism of the sphere, and weakly isomorphic if G and H have the same set of pairs of crossing edges. We generalize results of Pach and Toth and the author's previous results on counting different drawings of a graph under both notions of isomorphism. We prove that for every graph G with n vertices, m edge…
The aim of this paper is to obtain new inequalities for a large family of generalizations of the Wiener Index and to characterize the set of extremal graphs with respect to them. Our main results provide upper and lower bounds for these topological indices on unicyclic graphs.
In this paper we give new bounds for a several vertex-based and edge-based topological indices of graphs: Albertson irregularity index, degree variance index, Mostar and the first Zagreb index. Moreover, we give a new upper bound for the energy of graphs through IRB-index. Most of our results rely on a well-known characterization of the Laplacian spectral radius.
The eccentric-connectivity index of a graph G is the sum of the products of the eccentricity and the degree of each vertex in G. In this paper, we define four new invariants related to the eccentric-connectivity index and obtain upper bounds for total transformation graphs which are some generalizations of total graph.
We call a real multi-dimensional array a {\em tensor} for short. In enumerating vertices of the polytopes of stochastic tensors, different approaches have been used: {(1)} Combinatorial method via Latin squares; {(2)} Analytic (topological) approach by using hyperplanes; {(3)} Computational geometry (polytope theory) approach; and (4) Optimization (linear programming) approach. As all these approaches are worthy of consideration and investigation in the enumeration problem, various bounds have been obtained. This note is to compare the existing upper bounds arose from different approaches.
In this paper we settle long-standing questions regarding the combinatorial complexity of Minkowski sums of polytopes: We give a tight upper bound for the number of faces of a Minkowski sum, including a characterization of the case of equality. We similarly give a (tight) upper bound theorem for mixed faces of Minkowski sums. This has a wide range of applications and generalizes the classical the Upper Bound Theorems of McMullen and Stanley. Our main tool is relative Stanley--Reisner theory, a powerful generalization of the algebraic theory of simplicial complexes inaugurated by Hochster, Reis…
An orthogonal representation of a graph is an assignment of nonzero real vectors to its vertices such that distinct non-adjacent vertices are assigned to orthogonal vectors. We prove general lower bounds on the dimension of orthogonal representations of graphs using the Borsuk-Ulam theorem from algebraic topology. Our bounds strengthen the Kneser conjecture, proved by Lovász in 1978, and some of its extensions due to Bárány, Schrijver, Dol'nikov, and Kriz. As applications, we determine the integrality gap of fractional upper bounds on the Shannon capacity of graphs and the quantum one-round co…
