We study how non-perturbative dynamics on D-branes affects the ten-dimensional geometry. We show that a gaugino condensate changes the complex and the symplectic structures of the original manifold by deforming the supersymmetry conditions. The cases of D5, D6 and D7-branes are discussed in detail. In the latter case we find the explicit form of the resulting back-reacted background at linear order in the gaugino condensate.

It has been conjectured that the vortex solution on a D-brane - anti-D-brane system represents a D-brane of two lower dimension. We establish this result by first identifying a series of marginal deformations which create the vortex - antivortex pair on the brane - antibrane system, and then showing that under this series of marginal deformations the original D-brane - anti-D-brane system becomes a D-brane - anti-D-brane system with two lower dimensions. Generalization of this construction to the case of solitons of higher codimension is also discussed.
Using the techniques developed by Lunin and Maldacena we calaculate the supergravity solutions of membranes and fivebranes in the presence of a background C field. All the distinct possible C-field configurations are explored. Decoupling limits for these branes are then described that preserve the deformation leading to families of M-theory brane deformation duals. The decoupled geometry is then explored using probe brane techniques and brane thermodynamics.
The Maldacena-Nunez solution is generalized to include a number of integration constants, one of which controls the resolution of the singularity of the wrapped D5-brane background. Some features of the dual pure N=1 super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory are calculated, amongst which the gluino condensate, the beta function of the gauge coupling and a brane probe potential, which is related to the Veneziano-Yankielowicz effective potential. Each integration constant has a precise meaning in the dual SYM theory, e.g., the amount of non-perturbative SYM physics captured by the gravity configuration is d…
By introducing the noncommutativity in the world sheet, we discuss a modification of the D-brane states in the closed string theory. In particular we show how the world sheet noncommutativity induces a nonperturbative effect to the D-brane states.
We reformulate the Omega-deformation of four-dimensional gauge theory in a way that is valid away from fixed points of the associated group action. We use this reformulation together with the theory of coisotropic A-branes to explain recent results linking the Omega-deformation to integrable Hamiltonian systems in one direction and Liouville theory of two-dimensional conformal field theory in another direction.
We consider certain classes of operators in the exact conformal field theory SL(2,R) x SU(2) x U(1)^4 describing strings in an AdS(3) x S(3) x T4 geometry supported by Neveu--Schwarz 3-form fluxes. This background arises in the near-horizon limit of a system of NS5-branes wrapped on a 4-torus and F1-branes smeared on the 4-torus when both types of branes are located at the same point in their common transverse space. We find a class of operators that lead to spacetime supersymmetric deformations. It is remarkable that most of these operators are not chiral primary with respect to the N=2 super…
We study the relation between exactly marginal deformations in a large class of N=1 superconformal quiver gauge theories described by brane tilings and the degrees of freedom in the corresponding 5-brane systems. We show, with the help of NSVZ exact beta functions, that there are generically d-1 complex exactly marginal deformations of a gauge theory, where d is the perimeter of the corresponding n it, and the other two, the diagonal gauge coupling and a beta-like deformation, as background supergravity fields.toric diagram. We identify d-3 complex marginal deformations as deformations of the …
I discuss the relation of Hochschild cohomology to the physical states in the closed topological string. This allows a notion of deformation intrinsic to the derived category. I use this to identify deformations of a quiver gauge theory associated to a D-branes at a singularity with generalized deformations of the geometry of the resolution of the singularity. An explicit map is given from noncommutative deformations (ie, B-fields) to terms in the superpotential.
We study deformations of ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with space-time dependent couplings by embedding probe D3-branes in supergravity backgrounds with non-trivial fluxes. The effective action on the world-volume of the D3-branes is analyzed and a map between the deformation parameters and the fluxes is obtained. As an explicit example, we consider D3-branes in a background corresponding to $(p,q)$ 5-branes intersecting them and show that the effective theory on the D3-branes precisely agrees with the supersymmetric Janus configuration found by Gaiotto and Witten in arXiv:0804…
We review in elementary, non-technical terms the description of topological B-type of D-branes in terms of boundary Landau-Ginzburg theory, as well as some applications.
We search for integrable boundary conditions and their geometric interpretation as $D$-branes, in models constructed as generalized $λ$-deformations of products of group- and coset-spaces. Using the sigma-model approach, we find that all the conformal brane geometries known in the literature for a product of WZW models solve the corresponding boundary conditions, thus persisting as integrable branes along the RG flows of our sigma-models. They consist of the well known $G$-conjugacy classes, twisted $G$-conjugacy classes by a permutation automorphism (permutation branes) and generalized permut…
I construct a map from the Grothendieck group of coherent sheaves to $K$-homology. This results in explicit realizations of $K$-homology cycles associated with D-brane configurations. Non-Abelian degrees of freedom arise in this framework from the deformation quantization of $N$-tuple cycles. The large $N$ limit of the gauge theory on D-branes wrapped on a subvariety $V$ of some variety $X$ is geometrically interpreted as the deformation quantization of the formal completion of $X$ along $V.$
We discuss several mechanisms to cancel the anomalies of a 5-brane embedded in M-theory. Two of them work, provided we impose suitable conditions either on the 11-dimensional manifold of M-theory or on the 4-form field strength of M-theory.

We study a deformation of N=4 Super-Yang-Mills theory by a dimension-5 vector operator. There is a simple nonlocal "dipole" field-theory that realizes this deformation. We present evidence that this theory is realized in the setting of "pinned-branes". The dipoles correspond to open strings that arch out of the brane. We find the gravitational dual of the theory at large N. We also discuss the generalization to the (2,0) theory.
In this short note we give an example of the exact solution of the open bosonic string field theory defined on the background of $N$ coincided D0-branes. This solution leads to the change of the original background to the background where D0-branes are localised in general positions.
The exceptional symmetry is realized perturbatively in F-theory which is the manifest U-duality theory. The SO(5,5) U-duality symmetry acts on both the 16 spacetime coordinates and the 10 worldvolume coordinates. Closure of the Virasoro algebra requires the Gauss law constraints on the worldvolume. This set of current algebras describes a F-theory 10-brane. The SO(5,5) duality symmetry is enlarged to the SO(6,6) in the Lagrangian formulation. We propose actions of the F-theory 10-brane with SO(5,5) and SO(6,6) symmetries. The gauge fields of the latter action is coset elements of SO(6,6)/SO(6;…
In this note we study the N=1 abelian gauge theory on the world volume of a single fractional D3-brane. In the limit where gravitational interactions are not completely decoupled we find that a superpotential and a fermionic bilinear condensate are generated by a D-brane instanton effect. A related situation arises for an isolated cycle invariant under an orientifold projection, even in the absence of any gauge theory brane. Moreover, in presence of supersymmetry breaking background fluxes, such instanton configurations induce new couplings in the 4-dimensional effective action, including non-…
We discuss D-branes on a line of conformal field theories connected by an exact marginal deformation. The line contains an SU(2) WZW model and two mutually T-dual SU(2)/U(1) cosets times a free boson. We find the D-branes preserving a U(1) isometry, an F-flux quantization condition and conformal invariance. Away from the SU(2) point a U(1) times U(1) symmetry is broken to U(1) times Z_k, i.e. continuous rotations of branes are accompanied by rotations along the branes. Requiring decoupling of the cosets from the free boson at the endpoints of the deformation breaks the continuous rotation of b…
By direct calculation we showed that a finite analytic solution for marginal deformation of open string field theory, by a matter primary operator with singular OPE, can be obtained to all orders in the deformation parameter. In particular, we obtained solutions that describe lower dimensional D-branes and our results agree with the results obtained when the same problem is treated in the world-sheet conformal field theory language.
To our best knowledge, the leading non-perturbative stringy interaction between an NS brane and a Dp brane remains unknown. We here present the non-perturbative stringy amplitudes for a system of an F-string and a Dp brane and a system of an NS 5 brane and a Dp brane for $0 \le p \le 6$. In either case, the F or NS5 and the Dp are placed parallel at a separation. We obtain the respective amplitudes, starting from the amplitude for a system of a D1 and a D3 for the former and that for a system of a D5 and a D3 system for the latter, based on the IIB S-duality and various T-dualities plus the co…
We analyze the process of string vacuum destabilization due to instanton induced superpotential couplings which depend linearly on charged fields. These non-perturbative instabilities result in potentials for the D-brane moduli and lead to processes of D-brane recombination, motion and partial moduli stabilization at the non-perturbative vacuum. By using techniques of D-brane instanton calculus, we explicitly compute this scalar potential in toroidal orbifold compactifications with magnetized D-branes by summing over the possible discrete instanton configurations. We illustrate explicitly the …
We discuss the process of transmutation of branes into Abelian magnetic flux on the worldvolume of $D9$ branes. This phenomenon is T-dual to the recombination of branes in the intersecting-brane description. In the low energy limit this can be described by a Higgs mechanism involving bifundamental scalars. The Abelian magnetic background arises as a consequence of the compactness of the internal space. Explicit (six-dimensional) examples based on the supersymmetric and the Brane Supersymmetry Breaking (BSB) \mathbb{T}^4/\mathbb{Z}_2 orientifold are analyzed.
We construct an explicit class of solutions of type IIB supergravity that is a smooth deformation of the 3-brane class of solutions. The solution is nonsupersymmetric and involves nontrivial dilaton and axion fields as well as the standard 5-form field strength. One of the main features of the solution is that for large values of the radius the deformation is small and it asymptotically approaches the undeformed 3-brane solution, signaling a restoration of conformal invariance in the UV for the dual gauge theory. We suggest that the supergravity deformation corresponds to a massive deformation…
We calculate the first supersymmetric and kappa-symmetric derivative deformation of the M5-brane worldvolume theory in a flat eleven-dimensional background. By applying cohomological techniques we obtain a deformation of the standard constraint of the superembedding formalism. The first possible deformation of the constraint and hence the equations of motion arises at cubic order in fields and fourth order in a fundamental length scale $l$. The deformation is unique up to this order. In particular this rules out any induced Einstein-Hilbert terms on the worldvolume. We explicitly calculate cor…
We derive the perturbative four-dimensional effective theory describing heterotic M-theory with branes and anti-branes in the bulk space. The back-reaction of both the branes and anti-branes is explicitly included. To first order in the heterotic strong-coupling expansion, we find that the forces on branes and anti-branes vanish and that the KKLT procedure of simply adding to the supersymmetric theory the probe approximation to the energy density of the anti-brane reproduces the correct potential. However, there are additional non-supersymmetric corrections to the gauge-kinetic functions and m…
In this paper we study the thermodynamics of black branes at quantum scales. We analyze both perturbative and non-perturbative corrections to the thermodynamics of such black branes. It will be observed that these corrections will modify the relation between the entropy and area of these black branes. This will in turn modify their specific heat, and thus their stability. So, such corrections can have important consequences for the stability of black branes at quantum scales. We also analyze the effect of these perturbative and non-perturbative quantum corrections on various other thermodynami…
Fractional branes added to a large stack of D3-branes at the singularity of a Calabi-Yau cone modify the quiver gauge theory breaking conformal invariance and leading to different kinds of IR behaviors. For toric singularities admitting complex deformations we propose a simple method that allows to compute the anomaly free rank distributions in the gauge theory corresponding to the fractional deformation branes. This algorithm fits Altmann's rule of decomposition of the toric diagram into a Minkowski sum of polytopes. More generally we suggest how different IR behaviors triggered by fractional…
We study the relation between intersecting NS5-branes whose intersection is smoothed out and the deformed conifold in terms of the supergravity solution. We solve the condition of preserved supersymmetry on a metric inspired by the deformed conifold metric and obtain a solution of the NS5-branes which is delocalized except for one of the overall transverse directions. The solution has consistent properties with other configurations obtained by string dualities.
We investigate the transmutation of D-branes into Abelian magnetic backgrounds on the world-volume of higher-dimensional branes, within the framework of global models with compact internal dimensions. The phenomenon, T-dual to brane recombination in the intersecting-brane picture, shares some similarities to inverse small-instanton transitions in non-compact spaces, though in this case the Abelian magnetic background is a consequence of the compactness of the internal manifold, and is not ascribed to a zero-size non-Abelian instanton growing to maximal size. We provide details of the transitio…
A few supergravity solutions representing configurations of NS5-branes admit exact conformal field theory (CFT) description. Deformations of these solutions should be described by exactly marginal operators of the corresponding theories. We briefly review the essentials of these constructions and present, as a new case, the operators responsible for turning on angular momentum.
We derive a set of constraints on soliton solutions using geometric deformations, and transformations by internal symmetries with space-dependent parameters. We show that Derrick's theorem and a more complete set of constraints due to Manton are special cases of these deformation constraints (DC). We demonstrate also that known soliton solutions obey the DC, and extract novel results by applying the constraints to systems of D-branes, taking into account both Dirac-Born-Infeld and Wess-Zumino actions, and examining cases with and without D-brane gauge fields. We also determine a relation with …
It is shown that a Moyal deformation quantization of the SO(4k) Generalized Yang-Mills (GYM) theory action in D=4k dimensions, for spacetime independent field configurations, in the $\hbar \to 0$ limit, yields the Dirac-Nambu-Goto p-brane actions (obtained from the conformally invariant Dolan-Tchrakian p-brane actions after elimination of the auxiliary world volume metrics), in the orthonormal gauge, for p+1=4k world volumes embedded in a D=4k target spacetime background. The gauge fields/target spacetime coordinates correspondence is required but no large N limit is necessary. The equivalence…
Based on recent developments, in this letter we study the one parameter deformation of 2+1 dimensional gauge theories with scale invariance and N = 8 supersymmetry, which is expected to be the field theory living on a stack of M2 branes. The deformed gauge theory is defined by a Lagrangian and is based on an infinite set of novel 3-algebras constructed by relaxing the assumption that the invariant metric is positive definite. Under the Higgs mechanism, we can obtain the D-branes world volume theory in the presence of background fluxes.
We study D-brane dynamics in the gravity dual background of ODp theories using the effective action on the worldvolume of the brane. We explore the similarities of the system with the rolling tachyon, including the exponential decrease of pressure at late times. We also consider the case where the worldvolume theory on a D3-brane is coupled to gravity and construct a cosmological model. By considering the time reversal symmetric solutions, we find that we can have both closed and open universes depending on the initial value of the radial mode on the brane. We compare the models with tachyon d…
It is known that certain AdS boundary conditions allow smooth initial data to evolve into a big crunch. To study this type of cosmological singularity, one can use the dual quantum field theory, where the non-standard boundary conditions are reflected by the presence of a multi-trace potential unbounded below. For specific AdS_4 and AdS_5 models, we provide a D-brane (or M-brane) interpretation of the unbounded potential. Using probe brane computations, we show that the AdS boundary conditions of interest cause spherical branes to be pushed to the boundary of AdS in finite time, and that the c…
Boundary conformal field theory is the suitable framework for a microscopic treatment of D-branes in arbitrary CFT backgrounds. In this work, we develop boundary deformation theory in order to study the changes of boundary conditions generated by marginal boundary fields. The deformation parameters may be regarded as continuous moduli of D-branes. We identify a large class of boundary fields which are shown to be truly marginal, and we derive closed formulas describing the associated deformations to all orders in perturbation theory. This allows us to study the global topology properties of th…
We investigate the transition between singular and non-singular geometries from the vantage point of perturbative field dynamics. In particular, we obtain the closed-form absorption probability for minimally-coupled massless scalars propagating in the background of a heterotic 5-brane on a Taub-NUT instanton. This is an exact calculation for arbitrary incident frequencies. For the singular geometry, the absorption probability vanishes when the frequency is below a certain threshold, and for the non-singular case it vanishes for all frequencies. We discuss the connection between this phenomenon…
In this note we explain how world-volume geometries of D-branes can be reconstructed within the microscopic framework where D-branes are described through boundary conformal field theory. We extract the (non-commutative) world-volume algebras from the operator product expansions of open string vertex operators. For branes in a flat background with constant non-vanishing B-field, the operator products are computed perturbatively to all orders in the field strength. The resulting series coincides with Kontsevich's presentation of the Moyal product. After extending these considerations to fermion…
We use fractional and wrapped branes to describe perturbative and non-perturbative properties of N=1 super Yang-Mills living on their world-volume. (Talk given at the 1st Nordstrom Symposium, Helsinki, August 2003.)
We consider general planar deformations of a circular distribution of NS5-branes. The near-horizon region of the latter admits, after a T-duality transformation, an exact conformal-field-theory description in terms of the coset model SU(2)/U(1) X SL(2,R)/U(1). We derive the exactly marginal operators corresponding to an infinitesimal planar deformation using the conjectured holography between the coset model and the little string theory that resides on the worldvolume of the NS5-branes. Subsequently, we perform a complementary analysis of the same deformations using the associated N=1 supersym…
We study brane configurations for four dimensional N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories with quartic superpotentials which flow in the infrared to manifolds of interacting superconformal fixed points. We enumerate finite N=2 theories, from which a large class of marginal N=1 theories descend. We give the brane descriptions of these theories in Type IIA and Type IIB string theory. The Type IIB descriptions are in terms of D3 branes in orientifold and generalized conifold backgrounds. We calculate the Weyl and Euler anomalies in these theories, and find that they are equal in elliptic models and un…
We study non-perturbative D(-1)-instanton corrections to quartic gauge and curvature couplings in 8d type IIB orientifolds, in terms of a one-loop computation of BPS D0-branes in T-dual type I' models. The complete perturbative and non-perturbative results are determined by the BPS multiplicities of perturbative open strings and D0-brane bound states in the 9d type I' theory. Its modular properties admit a geometric interpretation by lifting to Horava-Witten theory. We use the type I' viewpoint to motivate a proper interpretation of 8d and 4d polyinstanton effects, consistent with heterotic - …
We argue that the Gopakumar-Vafa interpretation of the topological string partition function can be used to compute and resum certain non-perturbative brane instanton effects of type II CY compactifications. In particular the topological string A-model encodes the non-perturbative corrections to the hypermultiplet moduli space metric from general D1/D(-1)-brane instantons in 4d N=2 IIB models. We also discuss the reduction to 4d N=1 by fluxes and/or orientifolds and/or D-branes, and the prospects to resum brane instanton contributions to non-perturbative superpotentials. We argue that the conn…
In this paper we suggest a new source of perturbative decay of the KPV-state, which might have consequences for the viability of the KKLT-construction. The results do not rely on any direct enhancement of the decay due to flux accumulating on the anti-brane in transverse space. Instead, we note that the system can lower its energy through a sequence of NS5-configurations all the way to the true vacuum, without encountering a barrier, if we allow for clumping of screened charge in space time. The clumping can possibly be a parallel to the Gregory-Laflamme instability of black branes. The result…
M5-branes wrapping a holomorphic curve in a Calabi-Yau manifold can be used to construct four-dimensional N=1 gauge theories. In this paper we will consider M5-brane configurations corresponding to N=2 theories broken to N=1 by a superpotential for the adjoint scalar field. These M5-brane configurations can be obtained by lifting suitable intersecting brane configurations in type IIA, or equivalently by T-dualizing IIB configurations with branes and/or fluxes. We will show that turning on non-trivial expectation values for the glueball superfields corresponds to non-holomorphic deformations of…
We investigate the consequences of generalizing certain well established properties of the open string metric to the conjectured open membrane and open Dp-brane metrics. By imposing deformation independence on these metrics their functional dependence on the background fields can be determined including the notorious conformal factor. In analogy with the non-commutativity parameter $Θ^{μν}$ in the string case, we also obtain `generalized' theta parameters which are rank q+1 antisymmetric tensors (polyvectors) for open Dq-branes and rank 3 for the open membrane case. The expressions we obtain f…
Basics of some topics on perturbative and non-perturbative string theory are reviewed. After a mathematical survey of the Standard Model of particle physics and GUTs, the bosonic string kinematics for the free case and with interaction is described. The effective action of the bosonic string and the spectrum is also discussed. Five perturbative superstring theories and their spectra is briefly outlined. Calabi-Yau three-fold compactifications of heterotic strings and their relation to some four-dimensional physics are given. T-duality in closed and open strings are surveyed. D-brane definition…
The imaginary part of the two point functions of the superconformal anomalous currents are extracted from the cross-sections of semiclassical absorption of dilaton, RR-2 form and gravitino by the wrapped D5 branes. From the central terms of the two point functions anomalous Ward identity is established which relates the exact pre-potential of the ${\cal N}=2$ SUSY Yang-Mills theory with the vacuum expectation value of the anomaly multiplet. From the Ward identity, WDVV (Witten-Dijkgraaf-Verlinde-Verlinde) equation can be derived which is solved for the exact pre-potential.
We consider higher derivative corrections of the type D^{2k} R^2 in the effective action of the D3-brane with trivial normal bundle. Based on the perturbative disc and annulus amplitudes, and constraints of supersymmetry and duality, we argue that these interactions are protected, at least for small values of k. Their coefficient functions receive only a finite number of perturbative contributions, and non-perturbative contributions from D-instantons. We propose expressions for these modular forms for low values of k.
A T-dual version of the Gimon-Polchinski orientifold can be described by a configuration of intersecting Dirichlet seven branes and orientifold seven planes in the classical limit. We study modification of this background due to quantum corrections. It is shown that non-perturbative effects split each orientifold plane into a pair of nearly parallel seven branes. Furthermore, a pair of intersecting orientifold planes, instead of giving rise to two pairs of intersecting seven branes, gives just one pair of seven branes, each representing a pair of nearly orthogonal seven branes smoothly joined …
We study complex structure deformations of special Lagrangian cycles associated to fractional D-branes at $\mathbb{Z}_2$ singularities in Type II/$Ω\mathcal{R}$ orientifold models. By means of solving hypersurface constraints, we show how to compute the volumes of the most simple D-brane configurations. These volumes are given as a function of the deformation parameters depending on the D-brane position relative to the smoothed out singularity. We observe which cycles keep the special Lagrangian property in various deformation scenarios and what orientifold involutions are allowed. As expected…
Five-dimensional theories manifesting spontaneous brane generation are discussed in a gravitational context. Without gravity, the IR dynamics of the brane fluctuation below the brane tension scale is described by an effective theory for the Nambu-Goldstone modes. When gravity is properly taken into account the long distance dynamics changes. The spontaneous breaking of local translational invariance triggers the formation of massive representations via the Higgs mechanism and induces the appearance of new mass scales in the IR. These scales can in principle depend on other fundamental paramete…
We find the classical supersymmetric vacuum states of a class of N = 1* field theories obtained by mass deforming superconformal models with simple gauge groups and N = 4 or N =2 supersymmetry. In particular, new classical vacuum states for mass-deformed N = 4 models with Sp(2N) and SO(N) gauge symmetry are found. We also derive the classical vacua for various mass-deformed N=2 models with Sp(2N) and SU(N) gauge groups and antisymmetric (and symmetric) hypermultiplets. We suggest interpretations of the mass-deformed vacua in terms of three-branes expanded into five-brane configurations.
We extend the deformation theory algorithm of matrix factorizations to systems with more than one D-brane. The obstructions to the deformations are F-term equations which can be integrated to an effective superpotential. We demonstrate the power of this formalism for several examples of minimal models with two or three D-branes. These are realistic toy examples for systems with multiple D-branes in Calabi-Yau threefolds since both classes of models have obstructed open moduli.
In this review article we present an analysis of several aspects of four-dimensional, non-perturbative N=1 compactifications of string theory. Our study focuses on brane dynamics and their effective physics as encoded in the holomorphic couplings of the low-energy N=1 effective action, most prominently the superpotential W. This article is divided into three parts. In part one we derive the effective action of a spacetime-filling D5-brane in generic Type IIB Calabi-Yau orientifold compactifications. In the second part we invoke tools from string dualities, namely from F-theory, heterotic/F-the…
In this paper we consider type IIA compactifications in the isotropic Z2 x Z2 orbifold with a flux-induced perturbative superpotential combined with non-perturbative effects. Without requiring the presence of O-planes, and simply having D6-branes as local sources, we demonstrate the existence of de Sitter (dS) critical points, where the non-perturbative contributions to the cosmological constant have negligible size. We note, however, that these solutions generically have tachyons. By means of a more systematic search, we are able to find two examples of stable dS vacua with no need for anti-b…
We discuss deformations of orbifold singularities on tilted tori in the context of Type IIA orientifold model building with D6-branes on special Lagrangian cycles. Starting from $T^6/(\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2)$, we mod out an additional $\mathbb{Z}_3$ symmetry to describe phenomenologically appealing backgrounds and reduce to $\mathbb{Z}_3$ and $Ω\mathcal{R}$ invariant orbits of deformations. While D6-branes carrying SO(2N) or USp(2N) gauge groups do not constrain deformations, D6-branes with U(N) gauge groups develop non-vanishing D-terms if they couple to previously singular, now def…
