We present the results of an optical spectroscopic study of 12 GALEX-discovered star-forming Lyman alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs) at z ~ 0.3. We measure the emission line fluxes from these galaxies by fitting their observed spectra to stellar population models in order to correct for underlying stellar absorption. We revisit earlier stellar population model fitting results, finding that excluding now-known AGNs lowers the typical stellar population age and stellar mass of this sample to ~ 300 Myr and ~ 4 x 10^9 Msol, respectively. We calculate their dust extinction using the Balmer decrement, and find a typical visual attenuation of Av ~ 0.3 mag, similar to that seen in many high-redshift LAEs. Comparing the ratio of Lyalpha/Halpha and the Lyman alpha equivalent widths to the measured dust extinction, we find that the ISMs in these objects appear to be neither enhancing nor seriously attenuating the Lyman alpha equivalent widths, as would be the case in a quasi-clumpy ISM. Lastly, we perform a detailed analysis of the gas-phase metallicities of these galaxies, and we find that most galaxies in our sample have Z < 0.4 Zsol. We find that at a fixed stellar mass, these low-redshift LAE analogs are offset by ~ 0.6 dex lower in metallicity from the general galaxy population at similar redshifts based on the local mass-metallicity relationship. This implies that galaxies with Lyman alpha in emission may be systematically more metal poor than star-forming galaxies at the same stellar mass and redshift, similar to preliminary results at z ~ 2.
Sub-damped Lyman-alpha systems (sub-DLAs) have previously been found to exhibit a steeper metallicity evolution than the classical damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs), evolving to close to solar metallicity by z~1. From new high-resolution spectra of 17 sub-DLAs we have increased the number of measurements of [Fe/H] at z<1.7 by 25% and compiled the most complete literature sample of sub-DLA and DLA abundances to date. We find that sub-DLAs are indeed significantly more metal-rich than DLAs, but only at z<1.7; the metallicity distributions of sub-DLAs and DLAs at z>1.7 are statistically consisten…
The gas-phase and stellar metallicities have proven to be important parameters to constrain the star formation history of galaxies. However, HII regions associated with recent star-formation may not have abundances typical for the galaxy as a whole and it is believed that the bulk of the metals may be contained in the neutral gas. It is therefore important to directly probe the metal abundances in the neutral gas, which can be done by using absorption lines imprinted on a background quasar. Recently, we have presented studies of the stellar content of a small sample of such quasar absorbers wi…
In this third paper in a series on the nature of extended, asymmetric Lyman alpha emitters at z ~ 3 we report the discovery, in an ultra-deep, blind, spectroscopic long-slit survey, of a Lyman alpha emitting halo around a QSO at redshift 3.045. The QSO is a previously known, obscured AGN. The halo appears extended along the direction of the slit and exhibits two faint patches separated by 17 proper kpc in projection from the QSO. Comparison of the 2-dimensional spectrum with archival HST ACS images shows that these patches coincide spatially with emission from a peculiar, dumbbell-shaped, fain…
We present Keck/NIRSPEC spectroscopic observations of three Lyman alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs) at z ~ 2.3 discovered with the HETDEX pilot survey. We detect Halpha, [OIII], and Hbeta emission from two galaxies at z = 2.29 and 2.49, designated HPS194 and HPS256, respectively, representing the first detection of multiple rest-frame optical emission lines in galaxies at high-redshift selected on the basis of their Lyman alpha emission. The redshifts of the Lyman alpha emission from these galaxies are offset redward of the systemic redshifts by Delta_v = 162 +/- 37 (photometric) +/- 42 (systemat…
We present the results of a high-spatial-resolution study of the line emission in a sample of z=3.1 Lyman-Alpha-Emitting Galaxies (LAEs) in the Extended Chandra Deep Field-South. Of the eight objects with coverage in our HST/WFPC2 narrow-band imaging, two have clear detections and an additional two are barely detected (~2-sigma). The clear detections are within ~0.5 kpc of the centroid of the corresponding rest-UV continuum source, suggesting that the line-emitting gas and young stars in LAEs are spatially coincident. The brightest object exhibits extended emission with a half-light radius of …
The detection of Lyman-$α$ emitting galaxies (LAEs) puts severe constraints on the reionization history. In this Paper we derive the properties of very high-$z$ LAEs predicted in the only two reionization scenarios shown in a previous Paper to be consistent with current data on 15 independent evolving global (or averaged) cosmic properties regarding luminous objects and the intergalactic medium and the optical depth to electron scattering of ionized hydrogen to CMB photons: one with a monotonic behavior, which is completed by $z=6$, as commonly considered, and another one with a non-monotonic …
Lyman-alpha emitting galaxies can be used to study cosmological reionization, because a neutral intergalactic medium scatters Lyman-alpha photons into diffuse halos whose surface brightness falls below typical survey detection limits. Here we present the Lyman-alpha emitting galaxy LAE J095950.99+021219.1, identified at redshift z=6.944 in the COSMOS field using narrowband imaging and followup spectroscopy with the IMACS instrument on the Magellan I Baade telescope. With a single object spectroscopically confirmed so far, our survey remains consistent with a wide range of IGM neutral fraction …
Composite spectra of 85 proximate absorbers (log N(HI)>20 and velocity difference between the absorption and emission redshift, dv<10,000 km/s) in the SDSS are used to investigate the trends of metal line strengths with velocity separation from the QSO. We construct composites in 3 velocity bins: dv<3000 km/s, 3000<dv<6000 km/s and dv>6000 km/s, with further sub-samples to investigate the metal line dependence on N(HI) and QSO luminosity. Low (e.g. SiII and FeII) and high ionization (e.g. SiIV and CIV) species alike have equivalent widths (EWs) that are larger by factors of 1.5 -- 3 in the dv<…
We present observations of two strongly lensed $z\sim5$ Lyman-$α$ Emitting (LAE) galaxies that were discovered in the Sloan Giant Arcs Survey (SGAS). We identify the two sources as SGAS J091541+382655, at $z=5.200$, and SGAS J134331+415455 at $z=4.994$. We measure their AB magnitudes at $(i,z)=(23.34\pm0.09,23.29\pm0.13$) mags and $(i,z)=(23.78\pm0.18,24.24^{+0.18}_{-0.16}$) mags, and the rest-frame equivalent widths of the Lyman-$α$ emission at $25.3\pm4.1$Å~and $135.6\pm20.3$Å~for SGAS J091541+382655 and SGAS J134331+415455, respectively. Each source is strongly lensed by a massive galaxy cl…
Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) fitting is a well-developed astrophysical tool that has recently been applied to high-redshift Lyman Alpha-emitting galaxies. If rest-frame ultraviolet through near-infrared photometry is available, it allows the simultaneous determination of the star formation history and dust extinction of a galaxy. Lyman Alpha-emitter SED fitting results from the literature find star formation rates ~3 M_sun/yr, stellar masses ~10^9 M_sun for the general population but ~10^10 M_sun for the subset detected by IRAC, and very low dust extinction, A_V < 0.3, although a couple …
Neutral diffuse intergalactic gas that existed during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) suppresses Lyman Alpha (Lya) flux emitted by background galaxies. In this chapter I summarise the increasing observational support for the claim that Lya photons emitted by galaxies at z>6 are suppressed by intervening HI gas. I describe key physical processes that affect Lya transfer during the EoR. I argue that in spite of the uncertainties associated with this complex multiscale problem, the data on Lya emitting galaxies at z=0-6 strongly suggests that the observed reduction in Lya flux from galaxies at z>…
The HI 21cm absorption optical depth and the N(HI) derived from Lya absorption can be combined to yield the spin temperature (Ts) of DLAs. Although Ts measurements exist for samples of DLAs with z <0.6 and z >1.7, the intermediate redshift regime currently contains only 2 HI 21cm detections, leading to a `redshift desert' that spans 4 Gyrs of cosmic time. To connect the low and high z regimes, we present observations of the Lya line of six 0.6<z<1.7 HI 21cm absorbers. The dataset is complemented by both VLBA observations (to derive the absorber covering factor, f), and optical echelle spectra …
In order to use Lyman alpha (Lya) emission as star formation tracer in cosmological studies, we must understand how the resonant scattering affects the escape fraction of the Lya photons. Thus, high spatial resolution multiwavelength studies of nearby Lya emitters, like Haro 2, are highly needed. For that purpose, we have used Chandra X-ray and HST (UV, optical and NIR) images of Haro 2, and STIS and ground-based spectral images along its major and minor axes, to characterize the Lya emission and the properties of the stellar population. The UV, Ha (Halpha) and FIR luminosities of the Haro 2 n…
We present the chemical abundance measurements of the first large, medium-resolution, uniformly selected damped Lyman alpha system (DLA) survey. The sample contains 99 DLAs towards 89 quasars selected from the SDSS DR5 DLA sample in a uniform way. We analyze the metallicities and kinematic diagnostics, including the velocity width of 90% of the optical depth, Δv_{90}, and the equivalent widths of the SiII 1526, CIV 1548 and MgII 2796 transitions. To avoid strong line-saturation effects on the metallicities measured in medium-resolution spectra (FWHM~71 km/s), we derived metallicities from meta…
We present the elemental abundance and H2 content measurements of a Damped Lyman-α (DLA) system with an extremely large H i column density, log N(H i) (cm-2) = 22.0+/-0.10, at zabs = 3.287 towards the QSO SDSS J 081634+144612. We measure column densities of H2, C i, C i^*, Zn ii, Fe ii, Cr ii, Ni ii and Si ii from a high signal-to-noise and high spectral resolution VLT-UVES spectrum. The overall metallicity of the system is [Zn/H] = -1.10 +/- 0.10 relative to solar. Two molecular hydrogen absorption components are seen at z = 3.28667 and 3.28742 (a velocity separation of \approx 52 km s-1) in …
We present GalMC, a MCMC algorithm designed to fit the spectral energy distributions (SED) of galaxies to infer physical properties such as age, stellar mass, dust reddening, metallicity, redshift, and star formation rate. We describe the features of the code and the extensive tests conducted to ensure that our procedure leads to unbiased parameter estimation and accurate evaluation of uncertainties. We compare its performance to grid-based algorithms, showing that the efficiency in CPU time is ~ 100 times better for MCMC for a three dimensional parameter space and increasing with the number o…
Ly$α$ photons scattered by neutral hydrogen atoms in the circumgalactic media or produced in the halos of star-forming galaxies are expected to lead to extended Ly$α$ emission around galaxies. Such low surface brightness Ly$α$ halos (LAHs) have been detected by stacking Ly$α$ images of high-redshift star-forming galaxies. We study the origin of LAHs by performing radiative transfer modeling of nine $z=3.1$ Lyman-Alpha Emitters (LAEs) in a high resolution hydrodynamic cosmological galaxy formation simulation. We develop a method of computing the mean Ly$α$ surface brightness profile of each LAE…
We present the first results of a project, LSD, aimed at obtaining spatially-resolved, near-infrared spectroscopy of a complete sample of Lyman-Break Galaxies at z~3. Deep observations with adaptive optics resulted in the detection of the main optical lines, such as [OII], Hbeta and [OIII], which are used to study sizes, SFRs, morphologies, gas-phase metallicities, gas fractions and effective yields. Optical, near-IR and Spitzer/IRAC photometry is used to measure stellar mass. We obtain that morphologies are usually complex, with the presence of several peaks of emissions and companions that a…
We present a study of ~100 high redshift (z~2-4) extremely strong damped Lyman-alpha systems (ESDLA, with N(HI)>0.5x10^22 cm^-2) detected in quasar spectra from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey SDSS-III DR11. We study the neutral hydrogen, metal, and dust content of this elusive population of absorbers and confirm our previous finding that the high column density end of the N(HI) frequency distribution has a relatively shallow slope with power-law index -3.6, similar to what is seen from 21-cm maps in nearby galaxies. The stacked absorption spectrum indicates a typical metallicity ~…
The size, mass, luminosity, and space density of Lyman-alpha emitting (LAE) galaxies observed at intermediate to high redshift agree with expectations for the properties of galaxies that formed metal-poor halo globular clusters (GCs). The low metallicity of these clusters is the result of their formation in low-mass galaxies. Metal-poor GCs could enter spiral galaxies along with their dwarf galaxy hosts, unlike metal-rich GCs which form in the spirals themselves. Considering an initial GC mass larger than the current mass to account for multiple stellar populations, and considering the additio…
The Epoch of Reionization (EoR) represents a milestone in the evolution of our Universe. Star-forming galaxies that existed during the EoR likely emitted a significant fraction (~5-40%) of their bolometric luminosity as Lyman Alpha (Lya) line emission. However, neutral intergalactic gas that existed during the EoR was opaque to Lya emission that escaped from galaxies during this epoch, which makes it difficult to observe. The neutral intergalactic medium (IGM) may thus reveal itself by suppressing the Lya flux from background galaxies. Interestingly, a `sudden' reduction in the observed Lya fl…
Using a sample of 92 UV continuum-selected, spectroscopically identified galaxies with <z> = 2.65, all of which have been imaged in the Ly-a line with extremely deep narrow-band imaging, we examine galaxy Ly-a emission profiles to very faint surface brightness limits. The galaxies are representative of spectroscopic samples of LBGs at similar redshifts in terms of apparent magnitude, UV luminosity, inferred extinction, and star formation rate, and were selected without regard to Ly-a emission properties. We use extremely deep stacks of UV continuum and Ly-a emission line images to show that al…
Large surveys for Lyman-alpha emitting (LAE) galaxies have been proposed as a new method for measuring clustering of the galaxy population at high redshift with the goal of determining cosmological parameters. However, Lyman-alpha radiative transfer effects may modify the observed clustering of LAE galaxies in a way that mimics gravitational effects, potentially reducing the precision of cosmological constraints. For example, the effect of the linear redshift-space distortion on the power spectrum of LAE galaxies is potentially degenerate with Lyman-alpha radiative transfer effects owing to th…
Context. The Lyman alpha emission line of galaxies is an important tool for finding galaxies at high redshift, and thus probe the structure of the early universe. However, the resonance nature of the line and its sensitivity to dust and neutral gas is still not fully understood. Aims. We present measurements of the velocity, covering fraction and optical depth of neutral gas in front of two well known local blue compact galaxies that show Lyman alpha in emission: ESO 338-IG 04 and Haro 11. We thus test observationally the hypothesis that Lyman alpha can escape through neutral gas by being Dopp…
We present a rest-frame ultraviolet morphological analysis of 108 z=2.1 Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs) in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDF-S) and compare it to a similar sample of 171 LAEs at z=3.1. Using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images from the Galaxy Evolution from Morphology and SEDs survey, Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey, and Hubble Ultradeep Field, we measure size and photometric component distributions, where photometric components are defined as distinct clumps of UV-continuum emission. At both redshifts, the majority of LAEs have observed half-light radii <~ 2 kpc,…
We report evidence for an anti-correlation between spin temperature $T_s$ and metallicity [Z/H], detected at $3.6 σ$ significance in a sample of 26 damped Lyman-$α$ absorbers (DLAs) at redshifts $0.09 < z < 3.45$. The anti-correlation is detected at $3 σ$ significance in a sub-sample of 20 DLAs with measured covering factors, implying that it does not stem from low covering factors. We obtain $T_s = (-0.68 \pm 0.17) \times {\rm [Z/H]} + (2.13 \pm 0.21)$ from a linear regression analysis. Our results indicate that the high $T_s$ values found in DLAs do not arise from differences between the opt…
We have discovered a 300kpc-wide giant Lya nebula centered on the massive galaxy group RO-1001 at z=2.91 in the COSMOS field. Keck Cosmic Web Imager observations reveal three cold gas filaments converging into the center of the potential well of its ~4x10^13Msun dark matter halo, hosting 1200Msun/yr of star formation as probed by ALMA and NOEMA observations. The nebula morphological and kinematics properties and the prevalence of blueshifted components in the Lya spectra are consistent with a scenario of gas accretion. The upper limits on AGN activity and overall energetics favor gravity as th…
We report three additional SINFONI detections of H-alpha emission line from quasar absorbers, two of which are new identifications. These were targeted among a sample of systems with log N(HI)>19.0 and metallicities measured from high-resolution spectroscopy. The detected galaxies are at impact parameters ranging from 6 to 12 kpc from the quasar's line-of-sight. We derive star formation rates (SFR) of a few solar masses per year for the two absorbers at z_abs~1 and SFR=17 solar masses per year for the DLA at z_abs~2. These three detections are found among a sample of 16 DLAs and sub-DLAs (5 at…
The redshift-dependent fraction of color-selected galaxies revealing Lyman alpha emission has become the most valuable constraint on the evolving neutrality of the early intergalactic medium. However, in addition to resonant scattering by neutral gas, the visibility of Lyman alpha is also dependent on the intrinsic properties of the host galaxy, including its stellar population, dust content and the nature of outflowing gas. Taking advantage of significant progress we have made in determining the line emitting properties of $z \simeq 4-6$ galaxies, we propose an improved method, based on using…
We present a rest-frame ultraviolet analysis of ~120 z~3.1 Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs) in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDF-S). Using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images taken as part of the Galaxy Evolution From Morphology and SEDS (GEMS) survey, Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS), and Hubble Ultradeep Field (HUDF) surveys, we analyze the sizes of LAEs, as well as the spatial distribution of their components, which are defined as distinct clumps of UV-continuum emission. We set an upper limit of ~1 kpc (~0.1") on the rms offset between the centroids of the continuum and…
We present composite spectra constructed from a sample of 242,150 Lyman-alpha (Lya) forest absorbers at redshifts 2.4<z<3.1 identified in quasar spectra from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) as part of Data Release 9 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III. We select forest absorbers by their flux in bins 138 km/s wide (approximately the size of the BOSS resolution element). We split these absorbers into five samples spanning the range of flux -0.05 < F<0.45. Tests on a smaller sample of high-resolution spectra show that our three strongest absorption bins would probe circumgalac…
We combine high resolution hydrodynamical simulations with an intermediate resolution, dark matter only simulation and an analytical model for the growth of ionized regions to estimate the large scale distribution and redshift evolution of the visibility of Lyman-alpha emission in 6<=z<=8 galaxies. The inhomogeneous distribution of neutral hydrogen during the reionization process results in significant fluctuations in the Lyman-alpha transmissivity on large scales. The transmissivity depends not only on the ionized fraction of the intergalactic medium by volume and the amplitude of the local i…
The visibility of LyA emitting galaxies during the Epoch of Reionization is controlled by both diffuse HI patches in large-scale bubble morphology and small-scale absorbers. To investigate the impact on LyA photons, we apply a novel combination of analytic and numerical calculations to three scenarios: (i) the `bubble' model, where only diffuse HI outside ionized bubbles is present; (ii) the `web' model, where HI exists only in overdense self-shielded gas; and (iii) the more realistic 'web-bubble' model, which contains both. Our analysis confirms that there is a degeneracy between the ionizati…
Detailed studies of Damped and sub-Damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLA), the galaxies probed by the absorption they produce in the spectra of background quasars, rely on identifying the galaxy responsible for the absorber with more traditional methods. Integral field spectroscopy provides an efficient way of detecting faint galaxies near bright quasars, further providing immediate redshift confirmation. Here, we report the detection of H-alpha emission from a DLA and a sub-DLA galaxy among a sample of 6 intervening quasar absorbers targeted. We derive F(H-alpha)=7.7+/-2.7*10^-17 erg/s/cm^2 (SFR=1.…
We report the observation of a further asymmetric, extended Lyman alpha emitting halo at z=2.63, from our ultra-deep, long-slit spectroscopic survey of faint high redshift emitters, undertaken with Magellan LDSS3 in the GOODS-S field. The Lya emission, detected over more than 30 kpc, is spatially coincident with a concentration of galaxies visible in deep broad-band imaging. While these faint galaxies without spectroscopic redshifts cannot with certainty be associated with one another or with the Lya emission, there are a number of compelling reasons why they very probably form a Milky Way hal…
We present a semi-analytical model of star formation which explains simultaneously the observed UV luminosity function of high redshift Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) and luminosity functions of Lyman-alpha emitters. We consider both models that use the Press-Schechter (PS) and Sheth-Tormen (ST) halo mass functions to calculate the abundances of dark matter halos. The Lyman-alpha luminosity functions at z < 4 are well reproduced with only <10% of the LBGs emitting Lyman-alpha lines with rest equivalent width greater than the limiting equivalent width of the narrow band surveys. However, the obser…
We present a sample of 33 spectroscopically confirmed z ~ 3.1 Ly$α$-emitting galaxies (LAEs) in the Cosmological Evolution Survey (COSMOS) field. This paper details the narrow-band survey we conducted to detect the LAE sample, the optical spectroscopy we performed to confirm the nature of these LAEs, and a new near-infrared spectroscopic detection of the [O III] 5007 Å line in one of these LAEs. This detection is in addition to two [O III] detections in two z ~ 3.1 LAEs we have reported on previously (McLinden et al 2011). The bulk of the paper then presents detailed constraints on the physica…
We present Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) measurements of metal abundances in eight 0.083<z<0.321 damped Lyman-α(DLA) and sub-damped Ly-α absorption systems serendipitously discovered in the COS-Halos survey. We find that these systems show a large range in metallicities, with -1.10<[Z/H]<0.31, similar to the spread found at higher redshifts. These low-redshift systems on average have subsolar metallicities, but do show a rise in metallicity over cosmic time when compared to higher-redshift systems. We find the average sub-DLA metallicity is higher than the average DLA metallicity at all re…
We report observations of four sub-damped Lyman-alpha (sub-DLA) quasar absorbers at z<0.5 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origins Spectrograph. We measure the available neutrals or ions of C, N, O, Si, P, S, Ar, Mn, Fe, and/or Ni. Our data have doubled the sub-DLA metallicity samples at z<0.5 and improved constraints on sub-DLA chemical evolution. All four of our sub-DLAs are consistent with near-solar or super-solar metallicities and relatively modest ionization corrections; observations of more lines and detailed modeling will help to verify this. Combining our data with meas…
We make a detailed investigation of the properties of Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) in the LambdaCDM model. We present predictions for two published variants of the GALFORM semi-analytical model: the Baugh et al. (2005) model, which has star formation at high redshifts dominated by merger-driven starbursts with a top-heavy IMF, and the Bower et al. (2006) model, which has AGN feedback and a standard Solar neighbourhood IMF throughout. We show predictions for the evolution of the rest-frame far-UV luminosity function in the redshift range z=3-20, and compare with the observed luminosity functions…
We present the first spectroscopic measurements of the [OIII] 5007 A line in two z ~ 3.1 Lyman-alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs) using the new near-infrared instrument LUCIFER1 on the 8.4m Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). We also describe the optical imaging and spectroscopic observations used to identify these Lya emitting galaxies. Using the [OIII] line we have measured accurate systemic redshifts for these two galaxies, and discovered a velocity offset between the [OIII] and Ly-alpha lines in both, with the Lya line peaking 342 and 125 km/s redward of the systemic velocity. These velocity offs…
In this paper, we study the relationship between the 2-10 keV X-ray luminosity (L_X), assumed to originate from X-ray binaries (XRBs), and star formation rate (SFR) in UV-selected z<0.1 Lyman break analogs (LBAs). We present Chandra observations for four new GALEX-selected LBAs. Including previously studied LBAs, Haro 11 and VV 114, we find that LBAs demonstrate L_X/SFR ratios that are elevated by ~1.5sigma compared to local galaxies, similar to the ratios found for stacked LBGs in the early Universe (z>2). We show that these LBAs are unlikely to harbor AGN, based on their optical and X-ray sp…
We investigate the fraction of z ~ 0.3 Lyman alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs) which host active galactic nucleus activity, which is typically from 1 - 5% at 2 < z < 6. Using optical spectroscopy of 23 LAEs at 0.2 < z < 0.45 selected with GALEX UV data, we probe for AGN with a variety of methods, including line widths, diagnostic line ratios, high-ionization emission, infrared activity and X-ray luminosity. We found that our sample of low-redshift LAEs has an AGN fraction of 43 ^{+18}{-26}%, significantly higher than at high redshift. While previous results have shown that low-redshift LAEs have …
We present deep IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI) observations, searching for CO-emission toward two massive, non-lensed Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at z=3.216 and 4.058. With one low significance CO detection (3.5 sigma) and one sensitive upper limit, we find that the CO lines are >~ 3-4 times weaker than expected based on the relation between IR and CO luminosities followed by similarly, massive galaxies at z=0-2.5. This is consistent with a scenario in which these galaxies have low metallicity, causing an increased CO-to-H_2 conversion factor, i.e., weaker CO-emission for a given m…
The equivalent width (EW) of the Lyman Alpha (Lya) line is directly related to the ratio of star formation rates determined from Lya flux and UV flux density [SFR(Lya)/SFR(UV)]. We use published data --in the literature EW and SFR(Lya)/SFR(UV) are treated as independent quantities-- to show that the predicted relation holds for the vast majority of observed Lya emitting galaxies (LAEs). We show that the relation between EW and SFR(Lya)/SFR(UV) applies irrespective of a galaxy's `true' underlying star formation rate, and that its only source of scatter is the variation in the spectral slope of …
Using a spectral stacking technique we searched for the average \lya emission from high-z Damped \lya (DLA) galaxies detected in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey QSO spectra. We used a sample of 341 DLAs of mean redshift <z>= 2.86 and log N(HI) > 20.62 to place a 3$σ$ upper limit of 3.0 \times 10^{-18} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2} on the \lya flux emitted within $\sim$1.5 arcsec (or 12 kpc) from the QSO line of sight. This corresponds to an average \lya luminosity of < 2 \times 10^{41} erg s^{-1} or 0.03 $L_\star$(\lya). This limit is deeper than the limit of most surveys for faint \lya emitters. The lack o…
We present observations of a peculiar Lyman alpha-emitting galaxy at redshift 3.344, discovered in a deep, blind spectroscopic survey for faint Lyman alpha emitters with the Magellan II telescope in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF). The galaxy exhibits complex Lyman alpha emission, including an extended, asymmetric component that is partially suppressed by damped Lyman alpha absorption, and two spatially elongated, narrow emission features. Archival HST ACS imaging shows evidence for tidal disruption of the stellar component. This V=27 galaxy appears to give us unprecedented insights into tw…
We use state-of-the-art numerical simulations to explore the observability and the expected physical properties of the progenitors of the local group galaxies at z=6-8, within 1 billion years of the big bang. We find that the most massive progenitors of the Milky Way (MW) and Andromeda (M31) at z=6 and 7 are predicted to have absolute UV continuum magnitudes between -17 and -18, suggesting that their analogues lie close to the detection limits of the deepest near-infrared surveys conducted to date (i.e. HST WFC3/IR UDF12). This in turn confirms that the majority of currently known z=6-8 galaxi…
The Lya emission line of HI is intrinsically the brightest feature in the spectrum of astrophysical nebulae, making it a very attractive observational tool with which to survey galaxies. Moreover as a UV resonance line, Lya possesses several unique characteristics that make it useful to study the ISM and ionizing stellar population at all cosmic epochs. In this review I present a summary of Lya observations of galaxies in the nearby universe. At UV magnitudes reachable with current facilities, only ~5% of the local galaxy population shows a Lya equivalent width (EW_Lya) that exceeds 20Å. This …
Lyman break analogues (LBAs) are local galaxies selected to match a more distant (usually z~3) galaxy population in luminosity, UV-spectral slope and physical characteristics, and so provide an accessible laboratory for exploring their properties. However, as the Lyman break technique is extended to higher redshifts, it has become clear that the Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at z~3 are more massive, luminous, redder, more extended and at higher metallicities than their z~5 counterparts. Thus extrapolations from the existing LBA samples (which match z=3 properties) have limited value for characte…
(Abridged) We performed a spectroscopic galaxy survey, complete to m<20.3 (L_B>0.15L_B* at z=0.3), within 100x100" of the quasar Q1127-145 (z=1.18). The VLT/UVES quasar spectrum contains three z<0.33 MgII absorption systems. We obtained eight new galaxy redshifts, adding to the four previously known, and galaxy star formation rates and metallicities were computed where possible. A strong MgII system [W_r(2796)=1.8A], which is a known DLA, had three previously identified galaxies; we found two additional galaxies associated with this system. These five galaxies form a group with diverse propert…
We present the first results from a survey of SDSS quasars selected for strong H I damped Lyman-α (DLA) absorption with corresponding low equivalent width absorption from strong low-ion transitions (e.g. C II λ1334 and Si II λ1260). These metal-poor DLA candidates were selected from the SDSS DR5 quasar spectroscopic database, and comprise a large new sample for probing low metallicity galaxies. Medium-resolution echellette spectra from the Keck ESI spectrograph for an initial sample of 35 systems were obtained to explore the metal-poor tail of the DLA distribution and to investigate the nucleo…
We report the detection of the most luminous high-redshift Lyman Alpha Emitting galaxy (LAE) yet seen, with log L(Ly alpha) = 43.9 ergs/s. The galaxy -- COSMOS Lyman alpha 1, or COLA1 -- was detected in a search for ultra-luminous LAEs with Hyper Suprime-Cam on the Subaru telescope. It was confirmed to lie at z = 6.593 based on a Lyman alpha line detection obtained from followup spectroscopy with the DEIMOS spectrograph on Keck2. COLA1 is the first very high-redshift LAE to show a multi-component Lyman alpha line profile with a blue wing, which suggests that it could lie in a highly ionized re…
We use cosmological hydrodynamic simulations with stellar feedback from the FIRE project to study the physical nature of Lyman limit systems (LLSs) at z<1. At these low redshifts, LLSs are closely associated with dense gas structures surrounding galaxies, such as galactic winds, dwarf satellites, and cool inflows from the intergalactic medium. Our analysis is based on 14 zoom-in simulations covering the halo mass range M_h~10^9-10^13 Msun at z=0, which we convolve with the dark matter halo mass function to produce cosmological statistics. We find that the majority of cosmologically-selected LL…
We discovered a sample of 250 Ly-Alpha emitting (LAE) galaxies at z=2.1 in an ultra-deep 3727 A narrow-band MUSYC image of the Extended Chandra Deep Field-South. LAEs were selected to have rest-frame equivalent widths (EW) > 20 A and emission line fluxes > 2.0 x 10^(-17)erg /cm^2/s, after carefully subtracting the continuum contributions from narrow band photometry. The median flux of our sample is 4.2 x 10^(-17)erg/cm^2/s, corresponding to a median Lya luminosity = 1.3 x 10^(42) erg/s at z=2.1. At this flux our sample is > 90% complete. Approximately 4% of the original NB-selected candidates …
We present results from the LymAn Continuum Escape Survey (LACES), a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) program designed to characterize the ionizing radiation emerging from a sample of Lyman alpha emitting galaxies at redshift $z\simeq 3.1$. As many show intense [O III] emission characteristic of $z>6.5$ star-forming galaxies, they may represent valuable low redshift analogs of galaxies in the reionization era. Using HST Wide Field Camera 3 / UVIS $F336W$ to image Lyman continuum emission, we investigate the escape fraction of ionizing photons in this sample. For 61 sources, of which 77% are spectr…
Young, massive stars dominate the rest-frame ultraviolet spectra of star-forming galaxies. At high redshifts (z>2), these rest-UV features are shifted into the observed-frame optical and a combination of gravitational lensing, deep spectroscopy and spectral stacking analysis allows the stellar population characteristics of these sources to be investigated. We use our stellar population synthesis code BPASS to fit two strong rest-UV spectral features in published Lyman-break galaxy spectra, taking into account the effects of binary evolution on the stellar spectrum. In particular, we consider t…
