We present the first results of a project, LSD, aimed at obtaining spatially-resolved, near-infrared spectroscopy of a complete sample of Lyman-Break Galaxies at z~3. Deep observations with adaptive optics resulted in the detection of the main optical lines, such as [OII], Hbeta and [OIII], which are used to study sizes, SFRs, morphologies, gas-phase metallicities, gas fractions and effective yields. Optical, near-IR and Spitzer/IRAC photometry is used to measure stellar mass. We obtain that morphologies are usually complex, with the presence of several peaks of emissions and companions that are not detected in broad-band images. Typical metallicities are 10-50% solar, with a strong evolution of the mass-metallicity relation from lower redshifts. Stellar masses, gas fraction, and evolutionary stages vary significantly among the galaxies, with less massive galaxies showing larger fractions of gas. In contrast with observations in the local universe, effective yields decrease with stellar mass and reach solar values at the low-mass end of the sample. This effect can be reproduced by gas infall with rates of the order of the SFRs. Outflows are present but are not needed to explain the mass-metallicity relation. We conclude that a large fraction of these galaxies are actively creating stars after major episodes of gas infall or merging.
Recently, the number of detected galaxy counterparts of z > 2 Damped Lyman-alpha Absorbers in QSO spectra has increased substantially so that we today have a sample of 10 detections. Møller et al. in 2004 made the prediction, based on a hint of a luminosity-metallicity relation for DLAs, that HI size should increase with increasing metallicity. In this paper we investigate the distribution of impact parameter and metallicity that would result from the correlation between galaxy size and metallicity. We compare our observations with simulated data sets given the relation of size and metallicity…
Using a sample of 100 H I - selected damped Lyman alpha (DLA) systems, observed with the High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer on the Keck I telescope, we present evidence that the scatter in the well-studied correlation between the redshift and metallicity of a DLA is largely due to the existence of a mass-metallicity relationship at each redshift. To describe the fundamental relations that exist between redshift, metallicity and mass, we use a fundamental plane description, which is described by the following equation: [M/H]=(-1.9+-0.5)+(0.74+-0.21)logdv_90-(0.32+-0.06)z. Here, we assert that…
We present an absorption line analysis of the Lyman limit system (LLS) at z=3.55 in our Magellan/MIKE spectrum of PKS2000-330. Our analysis of the Lyman limit and full HI Lyman series constrains the total HI column density of the LLS (N_HI = 10^[18.0 +/- 0.25] cm^{-2} for b_HI >= 20 km/s) and also the N_HI values of the velocity subsystems comprising the absorber. We measure ionic column densities for metal-line transitions associated with the subsystems and use these values to constrain the ionization state (>90% ionized) and relative abundances of the gas. We find an order of magnitude dispe…
We present deep IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI) observations, searching for CO-emission toward two massive, non-lensed Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at z=3.216 and 4.058. With one low significance CO detection (3.5 sigma) and one sensitive upper limit, we find that the CO lines are >~ 3-4 times weaker than expected based on the relation between IR and CO luminosities followed by similarly, massive galaxies at z=0-2.5. This is consistent with a scenario in which these galaxies have low metallicity, causing an increased CO-to-H_2 conversion factor, i.e., weaker CO-emission for a given m…
We present the chemical abundance measurements of the first large, medium-resolution, uniformly selected damped Lyman alpha system (DLA) survey. The sample contains 99 DLAs towards 89 quasars selected from the SDSS DR5 DLA sample in a uniform way. We analyze the metallicities and kinematic diagnostics, including the velocity width of 90% of the optical depth, Δv_{90}, and the equivalent widths of the SiII 1526, CIV 1548 and MgII 2796 transitions. To avoid strong line-saturation effects on the metallicities measured in medium-resolution spectra (FWHM~71 km/s), we derived metallicities from meta…
We report evidence for an anti-correlation between spin temperature $T_s$ and metallicity [Z/H], detected at $3.6 σ$ significance in a sample of 26 damped Lyman-$α$ absorbers (DLAs) at redshifts $0.09 < z < 3.45$. The anti-correlation is detected at $3 σ$ significance in a sub-sample of 20 DLAs with measured covering factors, implying that it does not stem from low covering factors. We obtain $T_s = (-0.68 \pm 0.17) \times {\rm [Z/H]} + (2.13 \pm 0.21)$ from a linear regression analysis. Our results indicate that the high $T_s$ values found in DLAs do not arise from differences between the opt…
We present chemical abundance measurements for 47 damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs), 30 at z>4, observed with the Echellette Spectrograph and Imager and the High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer on the Keck telescopes. HI column densities of the DLAs are measured with Voigt profile fits to the Lyman-alpha profiles, and we find an increased number of false DLA identifications with SDSS at z>4 due to the increased density of the Lyman-alpha forest. Ionic column densities are determined using the apparent optical depth method, and we combine our new metallicity measurements with 195 from previous …
Sub-damped Lyman-alpha systems (sub-DLAs) have previously been found to exhibit a steeper metallicity evolution than the classical damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs), evolving to close to solar metallicity by z~1. From new high-resolution spectra of 17 sub-DLAs we have increased the number of measurements of [Fe/H] at z<1.7 by 25% and compiled the most complete literature sample of sub-DLA and DLA abundances to date. We find that sub-DLAs are indeed significantly more metal-rich than DLAs, but only at z<1.7; the metallicity distributions of sub-DLAs and DLAs at z>1.7 are statistically consisten…
We present VLT/FORS2 spectroscopy and GROND optical/near-IR photometry of the afterglow of the bright Fermi/LAT GRB 090926A. The spectrum shows prominent Lyman-alpha absorption with N_HI = 10^(21.73 +/- 0.07) cm^-2 and a multitude of metal lines at a common redshift of z=2.1062 +/- 0.0004, which we associate with the redshift of the GRB. The metallicity derived from SII is log(Z/Z_sun) ~ -1.9, one of the lowest values ever found in a GRB Damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) system. This confirms that the spread of metallicity in GRB-DLAs at z~2 is at least two orders of magnitude. We argue that this sprea…
Observations with Subaru telescope have detected surprisingly strong Lyman continuum (LyC; $\sim900$ Å in the rest-frame) from some Lyman $α$ emitters (LAEs) at $z=3.1$. We have examined the stellar population which simultaneously accounts for the strength of the LyC and the spectral slope of non-ionizing ultraviolet of the LAEs. As a result, we have found that stellar populations with metallicity $Z\geq1/50 Z_\odot$ can explain the observed LyC strength only with a very top-heavy initial mass function (IMF; $< m > \sim 50 M_\odot$). However, the critical metallicity for such an IMF is expecte…
Combining cosmological SPH simulations with a previously developed Lyman Alpha production/transmission model and the Early Reionization Model (ERM, reionization ends at redshift z~7), we obtain Lyman Alpha and UV Luminosity Functions (LFs) for Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs) for redshifts between 5.7 and 7.6. Matching model results to observations at z~5.7 requires escape fractions of Lyman Alpha, f_alpha=0.3, and UV (non-ionizing) continuum photons, f_c=0.22, corresponding to a color excess, E(B-V)=0.15. We find that (i) f_c increases towards higher redshifts, due the decreasing mean dust content…
Long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been suggested to occur preferentially in low metallicity environment. We discuss the possibility and theoretical aspects of using Lyman alpha emission properties of long GRB host galaxies as a metallicity indicator of high redshift GRB environments, where direct metallicity measurements are not easy. We propose to use the fraction of Ly-alpha emitters (LAEs) in long GRB host galaxies as a function of UV luminosity, which can be compared with star-formation-rate weighted LAE fraction of Lyman-break galaxies as the standard in the case of no metallicity depende…
The relative abundances of the Fe-peak elements (Ti-Zn) at the lowest metallicities are intimately linked to the physics of core-collapse supernova explosions. With a sample of 25 very metal-poor damped Lyman-alpha systems, we investigate the trends of the Fe-peak element ratios with metallicity. For nine of the 25 DLAs, a direct measurement (or useful upper limit) of one or more of the Ti,Cr,Co,Ni,Zn/Fe abundance ratios could be determined from detected absorption lines. For the remaining systems (without detections), we devised a new form of spectral stacking to estimate the typical Fe-peak …
We argue that the lack of observed damped Lyman alpha (DLA) systems that simultaneously have high HI columns densities and high metallicities results naturally from the formation of molecules in the cold phase of a two-phase atomic medium in pressure balance. Our result applies equally well in diffuse systems where the ultraviolet radiation field is dominated by the extragalactic background and in dense star-forming ones, where the local radiation field is likely to be orders of magnitude higher. We point out that such a radiation-insensitive model is required to explain the absence of high co…
We have discovered a ~45 kpc Lya nebula (or Lya ``blob'') at z~1.67 which exhibits strong, spatially-extended HeII emission and very weak CIV and CIII] emission. This is the first spatially-extended Lya+HeII emitter observed and the lowest redshift Lya blob yet found. Strong Lya and HeII-1640 emission in the absence of metal lines has been proposed as a unique observational signature of primordial galaxy formation (e.g., from gravitational cooling radiation or Population III star formation), but no convincing examples of spatially-extended Lya+HeII emitters have surfaced either in Lya-emitting…
Motivated by the anomalous dust-to-metal ratios derived in the literature for gamma-ray burst (GRB) damped Lyman-alpha absorbers (DLAs), we measure these ratios using the dust-depletion pattern observed in UV/optical afterglow spectra associated with the ISM at the GRB host-galaxy redshifts. Our sample consists of 20 GRB absorbers and a comparison sample of 72 QSO-DLAs with redshift 1.2 < z < 4.0 and down to Z = 0.002 Z_Sol metallicities. The dust-to-metal ratio in QSO- and GRB-DLAs increases both with metallicity and metal column density, spanning ~10--110% of the Galactic value and pointing …
Standard big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) predicts only a trace abundance of lithium and no heavier elements, but some alternatives predict a nonzero primordial metallicity. Here we explore whether CMB measurements may set useful constraints to the primordial metallicity and/or whether the standard CMB calculations are robust, within the tolerance of forthcoming CMB maps, to the possibility of primordial metals. Metals would affect the recombination history (and thus CMB power spectra) in three ways: (1) Lyman-alpha photons can be removed (and recombination thus accelerated) by photoionizing met…
We have combined the results from our recent observations of Damped and sub-Damped Lyman-alpha systems with the MIKE and UVES spectrographs on the Magellan Clay and VLT Kueyen telescopes with ones from the literature to determine the N(HI)-weighted mean metallicity of these systems based both on Fe, a depleted element in QSO absorbers and the local ISM, and Zn a relatively undepleted element. In each case, the N(HI)-weighted mean metallicity is higher and shows faster evolution in sub-DLAs than the classical DLA systems. Large grids of photoionisation models over the sub-DLA \nhI range with CL…
We present the results of an optical spectroscopic study of 12 GALEX-discovered star-forming Lyman alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs) at z ~ 0.3. We measure the emission line fluxes from these galaxies by fitting their observed spectra to stellar population models in order to correct for underlying stellar absorption. We revisit earlier stellar population model fitting results, finding that excluding now-known AGNs lowers the typical stellar population age and stellar mass of this sample to ~ 300 Myr and ~ 4 x 10^9 Msol, respectively. We calculate their dust extinction using the Balmer decrement, …
We study metal depletion due to dust in the interstellar medium (ISM) to infer the properties of dust grains and characterize the metal and dust content of galaxies, down to low metallicity and intermediate redshift z. We provide metal column densities and abundances of a sample of 70 damped Lyman-α absorbers (DLAs) towards quasars, observed at high spectral resolution with the Very Large Telescope (VLT) Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES). This is the largest sample of phosphorus abundances measured in DLAs so far. We use literature measurements for Galactic clouds to cover the…
We study the high-ionization phase and kinematics of the circumgalactic medium around low-redshift galaxies using a sample of 23 Lyman Limit Systems (LLSs) at 0.08<z<0.93 observed with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph onboard the Hubble Space Telescope. In Lehner et al. (2013), we recently showed that low-z LLSs have a bimodal metallicity distribution. Here we extend that analysis to search for differences between the high-ion and kinematic properties of the metal-poor and metal-rich branches. We find that metal-rich LLSs tend to show higher O VI columns and broader O VI profiles than metal-poo…
We present a SINFONI integral field kinematical study of 33 galaxies at z~3 from the AMAZE and LSD projects which are aimed at studying metallicity and dynamics of high-redshift galaxies. The number of galaxies analyzed in this paper constitutes a significant improvement compared to existing data in the literature and this is the first time that a dynamical analysis is obtained for a relatively large sample of galaxies at z~3. 11 galaxies show ordered rotational motions (~30% of the sample), in these cases we estimate dynamical masses by modeling the gas kinematics with rotating disks and expo…
We have serendipitously detected a strong O VI-bearing Lyman limit system at z_abs = 0.3558 toward the QSO J1009+0713 (z_em = 0.456) in our survey of low-redshift galaxy halos with the Hubble Space Telescope's Cosmic Origins Spectrograph. Its rest-frame equivalent width of W_r = 835 +/- 49 mA is the highest for an intervening absorber yet detected in any low-redshift QSO sightline, with absorption spanning 400 km s^-1 in its rest frame. HST/WFC3 images of the galaxy field show that the absorber is associated with two galaxies lying at 14 and 46 kpc from the QSO line of sight. The bulk of the a…
We used near-infrared integral field spectroscopic observations from the AMAZE and LSD programs to constrain the metallicity in a sample of 40 star forming galaxies at 3<z<5 (most of which at z~3.4). We measure metallicities by exploiting strong emission line diagnostics. We found that a significant fraction of star-forming galaxies at z~3.4 deviate from the Fundamental Metallicity Relation (FMR), with a metallicity up to a factor of ten lower than expected according to the FMR. This deviation does not correlate with the dynamical properties of the galaxy or with the presence of interactions. …
We present the first results from a survey of SDSS quasars selected for strong H I damped Lyman-α (DLA) absorption with corresponding low equivalent width absorption from strong low-ion transitions (e.g. C II λ1334 and Si II λ1260). These metal-poor DLA candidates were selected from the SDSS DR5 quasar spectroscopic database, and comprise a large new sample for probing low metallicity galaxies. Medium-resolution echellette spectra from the Keck ESI spectrograph for an initial sample of 35 systems were obtained to explore the metal-poor tail of the DLA distribution and to investigate the nucleo…
We present Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) measurements of metal abundances in eight 0.083<z<0.321 damped Lyman-α(DLA) and sub-damped Ly-α absorption systems serendipitously discovered in the COS-Halos survey. We find that these systems show a large range in metallicities, with -1.10<[Z/H]<0.31, similar to the spread found at higher redshifts. These low-redshift systems on average have subsolar metallicities, but do show a rise in metallicity over cosmic time when compared to higher-redshift systems. We find the average sub-DLA metallicity is higher than the average DLA metallicity at all re…
[Abridged]. Here, we report on the discovery of the galaxy counterpart of the z_abs=2.58 DLA on the line-of-sight to the z=3.07 quasar SDSS J091826.16+163609.0. The galaxy counterpart of the DLA is detected in the OIII 5007 and OII 3726,3729 emission lines redshifted into the NIR at an impact parameter of 16 kpc. Ly-alpha emission is not detected. The upper limit implies that Ly-alpha emission from this galaxy is suppressed by more than an order of magnitude. The DLA is amongst the most metal-rich DLAs studied so far at comparable redshifts. We find evidence for substantial depletion of refrac…
We extend a previous study of Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs) based on hydrodynamical cosmological simulations, by including two physical processes important for LAEs: (a) Lyman Alpha and continuum luminosities produced by cooling of collisionally excited HI in the galaxy, (b) dust formation and evolution; we follow these processes on a galaxy-by-galaxy basis. HI cooling on average contributes 16-18% of the Lyman Alpha radiation produced by stars, but this value can be much higher in low mass LAEs and further increased if the HI is clumpy. The continuum luminosity is instead almost completely domi…
We study the physical properties of a homogeneous sample of 157 optically-thick absorption line systems at redshifts ~1.8-4.4, selected from a high-dispersion spectroscopic survey of Lyman limit systems (LLSs). By means of multiple ionisation models and Bayesian techniques, we derive the posterior probability distribution functions for the density, metallicity, temperature, and dust content of the absorbing gas. We find that z>2 LLSs are highly ionised with ionisation parameters between -3<log U<-2, depending on the HI column density. LLSs are characterised by low temperatures (T<5x10^4 K) and…
We present chemical abundance measurements from high-resolution observations of 5 sub-damped Lyman-alpha absorbers at 1.7 < z < 2.4 observed with the Magellan Inamori Kyocera Echelle (MIKE) spectrograph on the 6.5-m Magellan II Clay telescope. Lines of Zn II, Mg I, Mg II, Al II, Al III, S II, Si II, Si IV, C II, C II*, C IV, Ni II, Mn II and Fe II were detected and column densities were determined. The metallicity of the absorbing gas, inferred from the nearly undepleted element Zn, is in the range of < -0.95 to +0.25 dex for the five absorbers in our sample, with three of the systems being ne…
We examine the abundance, clustering and metallicity of Damped Lyman-alpha Absorbers (DLAs) in a suite of hydrodynamic cosmological simulations using the moving mesh code AREPO. We incorporate models of supernova and AGN feedback, as well as molecular hydrogen formation. We compare our simulations to the column density distribution function at $z=3$, the total DLA abundance at $z=2-4$, the measured DLA bias at $z=2.3$ and the DLA metallicity distribution at $z=2-4$. Our preferred models produce populations of DLAs in good agreement with most of these observations. The exception is the DLA abun…
We use cosmological hydrodynamic simulations with stellar feedback from the FIRE project to study the physical nature of Lyman limit systems (LLSs) at z<1. At these low redshifts, LLSs are closely associated with dense gas structures surrounding galaxies, such as galactic winds, dwarf satellites, and cool inflows from the intergalactic medium. Our analysis is based on 14 zoom-in simulations covering the halo mass range M_h~10^9-10^13 Msun at z=0, which we convolve with the dark matter halo mass function to produce cosmological statistics. We find that the majority of cosmologically-selected LL…
The gas-phase and stellar metallicities have proven to be important parameters to constrain the star formation history of galaxies. However, HII regions associated with recent star-formation may not have abundances typical for the galaxy as a whole and it is believed that the bulk of the metals may be contained in the neutral gas. It is therefore important to directly probe the metal abundances in the neutral gas, which can be done by using absorption lines imprinted on a background quasar. Recently, we have presented studies of the stellar content of a small sample of such quasar absorbers wi…
We present the discovery of molecular hydrogen (H_2), including the presence of vibrationally-excited H_2^* in the optical spectrum of the afterglow of GRB 120815A at z=2.36 obtained with X-shooter at the VLT. Simultaneous photometric broad-band data from GROND and X-ray observations by Swift/XRT place further constraints on the amount and nature of dust along the sightline. The galactic environment of GRB 120815A is characterized by a strong DLA with log(N(H)/cm^-2) = 21.95 +/- 0.10, prominent H_2 absorption in the Lyman-Werner bands (log(N(H_2)/cm^-2) = 20.53 +/- 0.13) and thus a molecular g…
Using the results from a previously developed Lyman Alpha/continuum production/transmission and dust enrichment model for Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs), based on cosmological SPH simulations, we assess the detectability of their dust-reprocessed sub-millimeter (submm) radiation. As supernovae (rather than evolved stars) control dust formation and destruction processes, LAEs are relatively dust-poor with respect to local galaxies: they have low dust-to-gas ratios (0.05 times the dust-to-gas ratio of the Milky Way) in spite of their relatively high metallicity, which is approximately 10-50% of the…
We present GalMC, a MCMC algorithm designed to fit the spectral energy distributions (SED) of galaxies to infer physical properties such as age, stellar mass, dust reddening, metallicity, redshift, and star formation rate. We describe the features of the code and the extensive tests conducted to ensure that our procedure leads to unbiased parameter estimation and accurate evaluation of uncertainties. We compare its performance to grid-based algorithms, showing that the efficiency in CPU time is ~ 100 times better for MCMC for a three dimensional parameter space and increasing with the number o…
Young, massive stars dominate the rest-frame ultraviolet spectra of star-forming galaxies. At high redshifts (z>2), these rest-UV features are shifted into the observed-frame optical and a combination of gravitational lensing, deep spectroscopy and spectral stacking analysis allows the stellar population characteristics of these sources to be investigated. We use our stellar population synthesis code BPASS to fit two strong rest-UV spectral features in published Lyman-break galaxy spectra, taking into account the effects of binary evolution on the stellar spectrum. In particular, we consider t…
We report observations of four sub-damped Lyman-alpha (sub-DLA) quasar absorbers at z<0.5 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origins Spectrograph. We measure the available neutrals or ions of C, N, O, Si, P, S, Ar, Mn, Fe, and/or Ni. Our data have doubled the sub-DLA metallicity samples at z<0.5 and improved constraints on sub-DLA chemical evolution. All four of our sub-DLAs are consistent with near-solar or super-solar metallicities and relatively modest ionization corrections; observations of more lines and detailed modeling will help to verify this. Combining our data with meas…
We report the identification of a very metal-poor damped Lyman-alpha system (DLA) at z_abs = 3.067295 that is modestly carbon-enhanced, with an iron abundance of ~1/700 solar ([Fe/H] = -2.84) and [C,O/Fe] ~ +0.6. Such an abundance pattern is likely to be the result of nucleosynthesis by massive stars. On the basis of 17 metal absorption lines, we derive a 2 sigma upper limit on the DLA's kinetic temperature of T_DLA <= 4700 K, which is broadly consistent with the range of spin temperature estimates for DLAs at this redshift and metallicity. While the best-fitting abundance pattern shows the ex…
We report three additional SINFONI detections of H-alpha emission line from quasar absorbers, two of which are new identifications. These were targeted among a sample of systems with log N(HI)>19.0 and metallicities measured from high-resolution spectroscopy. The detected galaxies are at impact parameters ranging from 6 to 12 kpc from the quasar's line-of-sight. We derive star formation rates (SFR) of a few solar masses per year for the two absorbers at z_abs~1 and SFR=17 solar masses per year for the DLA at z_abs~2. These three detections are found among a sample of 16 DLAs and sub-DLAs (5 at…
We present a study of ~100 high redshift (z~2-4) extremely strong damped Lyman-alpha systems (ESDLA, with N(HI)>0.5x10^22 cm^-2) detected in quasar spectra from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey SDSS-III DR11. We study the neutral hydrogen, metal, and dust content of this elusive population of absorbers and confirm our previous finding that the high column density end of the N(HI) frequency distribution has a relatively shallow slope with power-law index -3.6, similar to what is seen from 21-cm maps in nearby galaxies. The stacked absorption spectrum indicates a typical metallicity ~…
The use of background quasars provides a powerful tool to probe the cool gas in the circum-galactic medium of foreground galaxies. Here, we present new observations with SINFONI and X-Shooter of absorbing-galaxy candidates at z=0.7-1. We report the detection with both instruments of the H-alpha emission line of one sub-DLA at z_abs=0.94187 with log N(HI)=19.38^+0.10_-0.15 towards SDSS J002133.27+004300.9. We estimate the star formation rate: SFR=3.6+/-2.2 solar masses per year in that system. A detailed kinematic study indicates a dynamical mass M_dyn=10^9.9+/-0.4 solar masses and a halo mass …
We present results of self-consistent, high-resolution cosmological simulations of galaxy formation at z~3. The simulations employ recently developed recipe for star formation based on the local abundance of molecular hydrogen, which is tracked self-consistently during the course of simulation. The phenomenological H2 formation model accounts for the effects of dissociating UV radiation of stars in each galaxy, as well as self-shielding and shielding of H2 by dust, and therefore allows us to explore effects of lower metallicities and higher UV fluxes prevalent in high redshift galaxies on thei…
We investigate the gas-phase metallicity and Lyman Continuum (LyC) escape fraction of a strongly gravitationally lensed, extreme emission-line galaxy at z=3.417, J1000+0221S, recently discovered by the CANDELS team. We derive ionization and metallicity sensitive emission-line ratios from H+K band LBT/LUCI medium resolution spectroscopy. J1000+0221S shows high ionization conditions, as evidenced by its enhanced [OIII]/[OII] and [OIII]/Hbeta ratios. Consistently, strong-line methods based on the available line ratios suggest that J1000+0221S is an extremely metal-poor galaxy, with a metallicity …
We study radiation pressure due to Lyman alpha line photons, obtaining and exploring analytical expressions for the force-multiplier, $M_F(N_H, Z) = F_α/(L_α/c)$, as a function of gas column density, $N_H$, and metallicity, $Z$, for both dust-free and dusty media, employing a WKB approach for the latter case. Solutions for frequency offset emission to emulate non-static media moving with a bulk velocity $v$, have also been obtained. We find that, in static media, Ly$α$ pressure dominates over both photoionization and dust-mediated UV radiation pressure in a very wide parameter range ($16 < \lo…
Using the GAEA semi-analytic model, we analyse the connection between Damped Lyman-$α$ systems (DLAs) and HI in galaxies. Our state-of-the-art semi-analytic model is tuned to reproduce the local galaxy HI mass function, and that also reproduces other important galaxy properties, including the galaxy mass - gas metallicity relation. To produce catalogs of simulated DLAs we throw $10^5$ random lines of sight in a composite simulated volume: dark matter haloes with log$(\frac{M_{200}}{ M_{\odot}}) \geq 11.5$ are extracted from the Millennium Simulation, while for $9.2 \leq \log(\frac{M_{200}}{ M_…
(Abridged) We performed a spectroscopic galaxy survey, complete to m<20.3 (L_B>0.15L_B* at z=0.3), within 100x100" of the quasar Q1127-145 (z=1.18). The VLT/UVES quasar spectrum contains three z<0.33 MgII absorption systems. We obtained eight new galaxy redshifts, adding to the four previously known, and galaxy star formation rates and metallicities were computed where possible. A strong MgII system [W_r(2796)=1.8A], which is a known DLA, had three previously identified galaxies; we found two additional galaxies associated with this system. These five galaxies form a group with diverse propert…
Using adaptive mesh-refinement cosmological hydrodynamic simulations with a physically motivated supernova feedback prescription we show that the standard cold dark matter model can account for extant observed properties of damped Lyman alpha systems (DLAs). We then examine the properties of DLA host galaxies. We find: (1) While DLA hosts roughly trace the overall population of galaxies at all redshifts, they are always gas rich. (2) The history of DLA evolution reflects primarily the evolution of the underlying cosmic density, galaxy size and galaxy interactions. With higher density and more …
