This paper is devoted to the study of couplings of the Lebesgue measure and the Poisson point process. We prove existence and uniqueness of an optimal coupling whenever the asymptotic mean transportation cost is finite. Moreover, we give precise conditions for the latter which demonstrate a sharp threshold at d=2. The cost will be defined in terms of an arbitrary increasing function of the distance. The coupling will be realized by means of a transport map ("allocation map") which assigns to each Poisson point a set ("cell") of Lebesgue measure 1. In the case of quadratic costs, all these cells will be convex polytopes.
Let $Ξ\subset\mathbb R^d$ be a set of centers chosen according to a Poisson point process in $\mathbb R^d$. Let $ψ$ be an allocation of $\mathbb R^d$ to $Ξ$ in the sense of the Gale-Shapley marriage problem, with the additional feature that every center $ξ\inΞ$ has an appetite given by a nonnegative random variable $α$. Generalizing some previous results, we study large deviations for the distance of a typical point $x\in\mathbb R^d$ to its center $ψ(x)\inΞ$, subject to some restrictions on the moments of $α$.
Let $Ξ$ be a set of centers chosen according to a Poisson point process in $\mathbb R^d$. Consider the allocation of $\mathbb R^d$ to $Ξ$ which is stable in the sense of the Gale-Shapley marriage problem, with the additional feature that every center $ξ\inΞ$ has a random appetite $αV$, where $α$ is a nonnegative scale constant and $V$ is a nonnegative random variable. Generalizing previous results by Freire, Popov and Vachkovskaia (\cite{FPV}), we show the absence of percolation when $α$ is small enough, depending on certain characteristics of the moment of $V$.
Let $Ξ$ be the set of points (we call the elements of $Ξ$ centers) of Poisson process in $\R^d$, $d\geq 2$, with unit intensity. Consider the allocation of $\R^d$ to $Ξ$ which is stable in the sense of Gale-Shapley marriage problem and in which each center claims a region of volume $α\leq 1$. We prove that there is no percolation in the set of claimed sites if $α$ is small enough, and that, for high dimensions, there is percolation in the set of claimed sites if $α<1$ is large enough.
Let Ξbe a discrete set in R^d. Call the elements of Ξcenters. The well-known Voronoi tessellation partitions R^d into polyhedral regions (of varying volumes) by allocating each site of R^d to the closest center. Here we study allocations of R^d to Ξin which each center attempts to claim a region of equal volume α. We focus on the case where Ξarises from a Poisson process of unit intensity. It was proved in math.PR/0505668 that there is a unique allocation which is stable in the sense of the Gale-Shapley marriage problem. We study the distance X from a typical site to its allocated center in th…
Let $Ξ$ be a discrete set in ${\mathbb{R}}^d$. Call the elements of $Ξ$ centers. The well-known Voronoi tessellation partitions ${\mathbb{R}}^d$ into polyhedral regions (of varying sizes) by allocating each site of ${\mathbb{R}}^d$ to the closest center. Here we study ``fair'' allocations of ${\mathbb{R}}^d$ to $Ξ$ in which the regions allocated to different centers have equal volumes. We prove that if $Ξ$ is obtained from a translation-invariant point process, then there is a unique fair allocation which is stable in the sense of the Gale--Shapley marriage problem. (I.e., sites and centers bo…
The $(d,α,β,γ)$-branching particle system consists of particles moving in $R^d$ according to a symmetric $α$-stable Lévy process $(0<α\leq 2)$, splitting with a critical $(1+β)$-branching law $(0<β\leq 1)$, and starting from an inhomogeneous Poisson random measure with intensity measure $μ_γ(dx)=dx/(1+|x|^γ), γ\geq 0$. By means of time rescaling $T$ and Poisson intensity measure $H_Tμ_γ$, occupation time fluctuation limits for the system as $T\to\infty$ have been obtained in two special cases: Lebesgue measure ($γ=0$, the homogeneous case), and finite measures $(γ>d)$. In some cases $H_T\equiv…
For d>=3, we construct a non-randomized, fair and translation-equivariant allocation of Lebesgue measure to the points of a standard Poisson point process in R^d, defined by allocating to each of the Poisson points its basin of attraction with respect to the flow induced by a gravitational force field exerted by the points of the Poisson process. We prove that this allocation rule is economical in the sense that the "allocation diameter", defined as the diameter X of the basin of attraction containing the origin, is a random variable with a rapidly decaying tail. Specifically, we have the tail…
We establish various bounds on the solutions to a Stein equation for Poisson approximation in Wasserstein distance with non-linear transportation costs. The proofs are a refinement of those in [Barbour and Xia (2006)] using the results in [Liu and Ma (2009)]. As a corollary, we obtain an estimate of Poisson approximation error measured in L^2-Wasserstein distance.
This paper deals with the intersection point process of a stationary and isotropic Poisson hyperplane process in $\mathbb{R}^d$ of intensity $t>0$, where only hyperplanes that intersect a centred ball of radius $R>0$ are considered. Taking $R=t^{-\frac{d}{d+1}}$ it is shown that this point process converges in distribution, as $t\to\infty$, to a Poisson point process on $\mathbb{R}^d\setminus\{0\}$ whose intensity measure has power-law density proportional to $\|x\|^{-(d+1)}$ with respect to the Lebesgue measure. A bound on the speed of convergence in terms of the Kantorovich-Rubinstein distan…
Plant differently colored points in the plane, then let random points ("Poisson rain") fall, and give each new point the color of the nearest existing point. Previous investigation and simulations strongly suggest that the colored regions converge (in some sense) to a random partition of the plane. We prove a weak version of this, showing that normalized empirical measures converge to Lebesgue measures on a random partition into measurable sets. Topological properties remain an open problem. In the course of the proof, which heavily exploits time-reversals, we encounter a novel self-similar pr…
For a Borel set $A$ and a homogeneous Poisson point process $η$ in $\R^d$ of intensity $λ>0$, define the Poisson--Voronoi approximation $ A_η$ of $A$ as a union of all Voronoi cells with nuclei from $η$ lying in $A$. If $A$ has a finite volume and perimeter we find an exact asymptotic of $\E\Vol(AΔA_η)$ as $λ\to\infty$ where $\Vol$ is the Lebesgue measure. Estimates for all moments of $\Vol(A_η)$ and $\Vol(AΔA_η)$ together with their asymptotics for large $λ$ are obtained as well.
Representations of branching Markov processes and their measure-valued limits in terms of countable systems of particles are constructed for models with spatially varying birth and death rates. Each particle has a location and a "level," but unlike earlier constructions, the levels change with time. In fact, death of a particle occurs only when the level of the particle crosses a specified level $r$, or for the limiting models, hits infinity. For branching Markov processes, at each time $t$, conditioned on the state of the process, the levels are independent and uniformly distributed on $[0,r]…
We study the sigma-finite measures in the space of vector-valued distributions on the manifold $X$ with Laplace transform $$Ψ(f)=\exp\{-θ\int_X\ln||f(x)||dx\}, θ>0.$$ We also consider the weak limit of Haar measures on the Cartan subgroup of the group $SL(n,{\Bbb R})$ when $n$ tends to infinity. The measure in the limit is called {\it infinite dimensional Lebesgue measure}. It is invariant under the linear action of some infinite-dimensional Abelian group which is an analog of Cartan subgroup. The measure also is closely related to the Poisson--Dirichlet measures well known in combinatorics an…
We consider a Poisson process $η$ on a measurable space $(\BY,\mathcal{Y})$ equipped with a partial ordering, assumed to be strict almost everwhwere with respect to the intensity measure $λ$ of $η$. We give a Clark-Ocone type formula providing an explicit representation of square integrable martingales (defined with respect to the natural filtration associated with $η$), which was previously known only in the special case, when $λ$ is the product of Lebesgue measure on $\R_+$ and a $σ$-finite measure on another space $\BX$. Our proof is new and based on only a few basic properties of Poisson p…
In this paper we consider a scalar transport equation with constant coefficients on domains with discrete space and continuous, discrete or general time. We show that on all these underlying domains solutions of the transport equation can conserve sign and integrals both in time and space. Detailed analysis reveals that, under some initial conditions, the solutions correspond to counting stochastic processes and related probability distributions. Consequently, the transport equation could generate various modifications of these processes and distributions and provide some insights into corresp…
We study fundamental properties of the gamma process and their relation to various topics such as Poisson-Dirichlet measures and stable processes. We prove the quasi-invariance of the gamma process with respect to a large group of linear transformations. We also show that it is a renormalized limit of the stable processes and has an equivalent sigma-finite measure (quasi-Lebesgue) with important invariance properties. New properties of the gamma process can be applied to the Poisson-Dirichlet measures. We also emphasize the deep similarity between the gamma process and the Brownian motion. The…
Pick n points independently at random in R^2, according to a prescribed probability measure mu, and let D^n_1 <= D^n_2 <= ... be the areas of the binomial n choose 3 triangles thus formed, in non-decreasing order. If mu is absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure, then, under weak conditions, the set {n^3 D^n_i : i >= 1} converges as n --> infinity to a Poisson process with a constant intensity c(mu). This result, and related conclusions, are proved using standard arguments of Poisson approximation, and may be extended to functionals more general than the area of a triangle. It i…
We show that two different ideas of uniform spreading of locally finite measures in the d-dimensional Euclidean space are equivalent. The first idea is formulated in terms of finite distance transportations to the Lebesgue measure, while the second idea is formulated in terms of vector fields connecting a given measure with the Lebesgue measure.
Based on the multidimensional irreducible paving of De March & Touzi, we provide a multi-dimensional version of the quasi sure duality for the martingale optimal transport problem, thus extending the result of Beiglböck, Nutz & Touzi. Similar, we also prove a disintegration result which states a natural decomposition of the martingale optimal transport problem on the irreducible components, with pointwise duality verified on each component. As another contribution, we extend the martingale monotonicity principle to the present multi-dimensional setting. Our results hold in dimensions 1, 2, and…
In this article we study (possibly degenerate) stochastic differential equations (SDE) with irregular (or discontiuous) coefficients, and prove that under certain conditions on the coefficients, there exists a unique almost everywhere stochastic (invertible) flow associated with the SDE in the sense of Lebesgue measure. In the case of constant diffusions and BV drifts, we obtain such a result by studying the related stochastic transport equation. In the case of non-constant diffusions and Sobolev drifts, we use a direct method. In particular, we extend the recent results on ODEs with non-smoot…
We address the Monge problem in metric spaces with a geodesic distance: (X, d) is a Polish space and dN is a geodesic Borel distance which makes (X,dN) a possibly branching geodesic space. We show that under some assumptions on the transference plan we can reduce the transport problem to transport problems along family of geodesics. We introduce two assumptions on the transference plan π which imply that the conditional probabilities of the first marginal on each family of geodesics are continuous and that each family of geodesics is a hourglass-like set. We show that this regularity is suffic…
This paper is about quantitative linearization results for the Monge-Ampère equation with rough data. We develop a large-scale regularity theory and prove that if a measure $μ$ is close to the Lebesgue measure in Wasserstein distance at all scales, then the displacement of the macroscopic optimal coupling is quantitatively close at all scales to the gradient of the solution of the corresponding Poisson equation. The main ingredient we use is a harmonic approximation result for the optimal transport plan between arbitrary measures. This is used in a Campanato iteration which transfers the infor…
