We consider the finite temperature metal-insulator transition in the half filled paramagnetic Hubbard model on the infinite dimensional Bethe lattice. A new method for calculating the Dynamical Mean Field Theory fixpoint surface in the phase diagram is presented and shown to be free from the convergence problems of standard forward recursion. The fixpoint equation is then analyzed using dynamical systems methods. On the fixpoint surface the eigenspectra of its Jacobian is used to characterize the hysteresis boundaries of the first order transition line and its second order critical end point. The critical point is shown to be a cusp catastrophe in the parameter space, opening a pitchfork bifurcation along the first order transition line, while the hysteresis boundaries are shown to be saddle-node bifurcations of two merging fixpoints. Using Landau theory the properties of the critical end point is determined and related to the critical eigenmode of the Jacobian. Our findings provide new insights into basic properties of this intensively studied transition.
We investigate the Mott transition using a cluster extension of dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). In the absence of frustration we find no evidence for a finite temperature Mott transition. Instead, in a frustrated model, we observe signatures of a finite temperature Mott critical point in agreement with experimental studies of kappa-organics and with single site DMFT. As the Mott transition is approached, a clear momentum dependence of the electron lifetime develops on the Fermi surface with the formation of cold regions along the diagonal direction of the Brillouin zone. Furthermore the va…
We use the dynamical mean field method to investigate electronic properties of heterostructures in which finite number of Mott-insulator layers are embedded in a spatially infinite band-insulator. The evolution of the correlation effects with the number of Mott insulating layers and with position in the heterostructure is determined, and the optical conductivity is computed. It is shown that the heterostructures are generally metallic, with moderately renormalized bands of quasiparticles appearing at the interface between the correlated and uncorrelated regions.
We introduce a Cellular Dynamical Cluster Approximation (CDCA) to study the nature of the Mott insulator-metal transition in the extended Hubbard model on a square lattice. At strong coupling, a d-wave Mott insulator is obtained. Hole doping drives a first order Mott transition to a non-Fermi (nFL) liquid metal. Remarkably, this nFL is caused by an Anderson orthogonality catastrophe at low energies due to the non-trivial competition between strong, non-local interactions and hopping. This constitutes the first explicit realisation of Anderson's Luttinger liquid idea in two dimensions. Many exp…
The dynamical mean-field method is used to formulate a computationally tractable theory of electron-phonon interactions in systems with arbitrary local electron-electron interactions in the physically relevant adiabatic limit of phonon frequency small compared to electron bandwidth or interaction scale. As applications, the phonon contribution to the effective mass of a carrier in a lightly doped Mott insulator is determined and the phase separation boundary is discussed.
Using nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory, we compute the time evolution of the current in a Mott insulator after a strong electric field is turned on. We observe the formation of a quasistationary state in which the current is almost time-independent although the system is constantly excited. At moderately strong fields this state is stable for quite long times. The stationary current exhibits a threshold behavior as a function of the field, in which the threshold increases with the Coulomb interaction and vanishes as the metal-insulator transition is approached.
We consider the one dimensional (1D) extended Hubbard model at half filling in the presence of a magnetic field. Using field theory techniques we calculate the dynamical density-density correlation function $χ_{nn}(ω,q)$ in the low-energy limit. When excitons are formed, a singularity appears in $χ_{nn}(ω,q)$ at a particular energy and momentum transfer.
Very large anisotropies in transport quantities have been observed in the presence of very small in-plane structural anisotropy in many strongly correlated electron materials. By studying the two-dimensional Hubbard model with dynamical-mean-field theory for clusters, we show that such large anisotropies can be induced without static stripe order if the interaction is large enough to yield a Mott transition. Anisotropy decreases at large frequency. The maximum effect on conductivity anisotropy occurs in the underdoped regime, as observed in high temperature superconductors.
The dynamical mean-field theory is employed to study the orbital-selective Mott transition (OSMT) of the two-orbital Hubbard model with nearest neighbor hopping and next-nearest neighbor (NNN) hopping. The NNN hopping breaks the particle-hole symmetry at half filling and gives rise to an asymmetric density of states (DOS). Our calculations show that the broken symmetry of DOS benefits the OSMT, where the region of the orbital-selective Mott phase significantly extends with the increasing NNN hopping integral. We also find that Hund's rule coupling promotes OSMT by blocking the orbital fluctuat…
The 2D half-filled Hubbard model is studied by a nonperturbative analytic theory of correlator projection. The original dynamical mean-field approximation (DMFA) is reproduced at the first-order projection and then improved by systematic inclusion of spatial correlations at higher orders. A geometrical frustration induces a first-order Mott transition surface with a finite-temperature critical end curve. Growth of antiferromagnetic correlations gives single-particle spectra strongly modified from DMFA with shadow bands and flat dispersions observed in high-T_c cuprates.
As a generic model describing quasi-one-dimensional Mott and Peierls insulators, we investigate the Holstein-Hubbard model for half-filled bands using numerical techniques. Combining Lanczos diagonalization with Chebyshev moment expansion we calculate exactly the photoemission and inverse photoemission spectra and use these to establish the phase diagram of the model. While polaronic features emerge only at strong electron-phonon couplings, pronounced phonon signatures, such as multi-quanta band states, can be found in the Mott insulating regime as well. In order to corroborate the Mott to Pei…
We consider the interaction-driven Mott transition at zero temperature from the viewpoint of microscopic Fermi liquid theory. To this end, we derive an exact expression for the Landau parameters within the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) approximation to the single-band Hubbard model. At the Mott transition the symmetric and the anti-symmetric Landau parameter diverge. The vanishing compressibility at the Mott transition directly implies the divergence of the forward scattering amplitude in the charge sector, which connects the proximity of the Mott phase to a tendency towards phase separat…
We study metal-insulator transitions between Mott insulators and metals. The transition mechanism completely different from the original dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) emerges from a cluster extension of it. A consistent picture suggests that the quasiparticle weight $Z$ remains nonzero through metals and suddenly jumps to zero at the transition, while the gap opens continuously in the insulators. This is in contrast with the original DMFT, where $Z$ continuously vanishes but the gap opens discontinuously. The present results arising from electron differentiation in momentum space agree wi…
We calculate the Hubbard bands for the half-filled Hubbard model on a Bethe lattice with infinite coordination number up to and including third order in the inverse Hubbard interaction. We employ the Kato--Takahashi perturbation theory to solve the self-consistency equation of the Dynamical Mean-Field Theory analytically for the single-impurity Anderson model in multi-chain geometry. The weight of the secondary Hubbard sub-bands is of fourth order so that the two-chain geometry is sufficient for our study. Even close to the Mott--Hubbard transition, our results for the Mott--Hubbard gap agree …
We examine whether the Mott transition of a half-filled, two-orbital Hubbard model with unequal bandwidths occurs simultaneously for both bands or whether it is a two-stage process in which the orbital with narrower bandwith localizes first (giving rise to an intermediate `orbital-selective' Mott phase). This question is addressed using both dynamical mean-field theory, and a representation of fermion operators in terms of slave quantum spins, followed by a mean-field approximation (similar in spirit to a Gutzwiller approximation). In the latter approach, the Mott transition is found to be orb…
We discuss some aspects of the pressure (or interaction) driven Mott transition, in three dimensional transition metal oxides by means of dynami cal mean field theory. We isolate the universal properties of the transition from the aspects which depend more on the detailed chemistry of the compounds. In this light we can understand the main differences and the remarkable similarities between these systems. Both theory and experiment converge on the transfer of spectral weight from low energies to high energies as the universal mechanism underlying the Mott transition, and we comment on the poss…
In this paper, I discuss the finite-temperature metal-insulator transition of the paramagnetic Hubbard model within dynamical mean-field theory. I show that coexisting solutions, the hallmark of such a transition, can be obtained in a consistent way both from Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations and from the Exact Diagonalization method. I pay special attention to discretization errors within QMC. These errors explain why it is difficult to obtain the solutions by QMC close to the boundaries of the coexistence region.
We study analytically the Mott transition of the N-orbital Hubbard model using dynamical mean-field theory and a low-energy projection onto an effective Kondo model. It is demonstrated that the critical interaction at which the insulator appears (Uc1) and the one at which the metal becomes unstable (Uc2) have different dependence on the number of orbitals as the latter becomes large: Uc1 ~ \sqrt{N} while Uc2 ~ N. An exact analytical determination of the critical coupling Uc2/N is obtained in the large-N limit. The metallic solution close to this critical coupling has many similarities at low-e…
We study the Mott metal-insulator transition in the Periodic Anderson Model within Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT). Near the quantum transition, we find a non-Fermi liquid metallic state down to a vanishing temperature scale. We identify the origin of the non-Fermi liquid behavior as due to magnetic scattering of the doped carriers by the localized moments. The non-Fermi liquid state can be tuned by either doping or external magnetic field. Our results show that the coupling to spatial magnetic fluctuations (absent in DMFT) is not a prerequisite to realize a non-Fermi liquid scenario for he…
We address the nature of the Mott transition in the Hubbard model at half-filling using cluster Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT). We compare cluster DMFT results with those of single site DMFT. We show that inclusion of the short range correlations on top of the on-site correlations, already treated exactly in single site DMFT, do not change the nature of the transition between the paramagnetic metal and the paramagnetic Mott insulator, which remains first order. However, the short range correlations reduce substantially the critical $U$ and modify the shape of transition lines. Moreover, th…
We present a formalism based on nonequilibrium dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) which allows to compute the time-resolved X-ray absorption spectrum (XAS) of photo-excited solids. By applying this formalism to the photo-doped half-filled and quarter-filled two-orbital Hubbard models in the Mott insulating regime we clarify how the time-resolved XAS signal reflects the nonequilibrium population of different local states. Apart from the missing broadening associated with continuum excitations, the atomic XAS spectrum computed with the nonthermal state populations provides a good approximation t…
We present a large-scale combinatorial-diagrammatic computation of high-order contributions to the strong-coupling Kato-Takahashi perturbation series for the Hubbard model in high dimensions. The ground-state energy of the Mott-insulating phase is determined exactly up to the 15-th order in 1/U. The perturbation expansion is extrapolated to infinite order and the critical behavior is determined using the Domb-Sykes method. We compare the perturbative results with two dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) calculations using a quantum Monte Carlo method and a density-matrix renormalization group me…
We investigate the nonlinear optical susceptibilities of Mott insulators with the dynamical mean field approximation. The two-photon absorption (TPA) and the third-harmonic generation (THG) spectra are calculated, and the classification by the types of coupling to external fields shows different behavior from conventional semiconductors. The direct transition terms are predominant both in the TPA and THG spectra, and the importance of taking all types of interaction with the external field into account is illustrated in connection with the THG spectrum and dcKerr effect. The dependence of the …
One-dimensional Mott insulators exhibit giant nonlinear optical response. Based on the dynamical density matrix renormalization group method, photoexcited states and optical response in the insulators are studied as functions of the on-site and the nearest neighbor Coulomb interactions, $U$ and $V$, respectively. We find that the lowest optically-allowed and forbidden excited states, which have odd and even parities, respectively, are degenerate for $V/t\ltsim 2$ with $t$ being the hopping integral of an electron between nearest neighbor sites. For $V/t\gtsim 2$, the bound states with even and…
We investigate the role of the bandwidth difference in the Mott metal-insulator transition of a two-band Hubbard model in the limit of infinite dimensions, by means of a Gutzwiller variational wave function as well as by dynamical mean-field theory. The variational calculation predicts a two-stage quenching of the charge degrees of freedom, in which the narrower band undergoes a Mott transition before the wider one, both in the presence and in the absence of a Hund's exchange coupling. However, this scenario is not fully confirmed by the dynamical mean-field theory calculation, which shows tha…
We introduce a valence-bond dynamical mean-field theory of doped Mott insulators. It is based on a minimal cluster of two orbitals, each associated with a different region of momentum space and hybridized to a self-consistent bath. The low-doping regime is characterized by singlet formation and the suppression of quasiparticles in the antinodal regions, leading to the formation of Fermi arcs. This is described in terms of an orbital-selective transition in reciprocal space. The calculated tunneling and photoemission spectra are consistent with the phenomenology of the normal state of cuprates.…
We employ dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) with a Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) atomic solver to investigate the finite temperature Mott transition in the Hubbard model with the nearest neighbor hopping on a triangular lattice at half-filling. We estimate the value of the critical interaction to be $U_c=12.0 \pm 0.5$ in units of the hopping amplitude $t$ through the evolution of the magnetic moment, spectral function, internal energy and specific heat as the interaction $U$ and temperature $T$ are varied. This work also presents a comparison between DMFT and finite size determinant Quantum Monte…
The one-dimensional Hubbard model is investigated by means of two different cluster schemes suited to introduce short-range spatial correlations beyond the single-site Dynamical Mean-Field Theory, namely the Cluster-Dynamical Mean-Field Theory and its periodized version. It is shown that both cluster schemes are able to describe with extreme accuracy the evolution of the density as a function of the chemical potential from the Mott insulator to the metallic state. Using exact diagonalization to solve the cluster impurity model, we discuss the role of the truncation of the Hilbert space of the …
We use a nonequilibrium implementation of extended dynamical mean field theory to study the effect of dynamical screening in photo-excited Mott insulators. The insertion of doublons and holes adds low-energy screening modes and leads to a reduction of the Mott gap. The coupling to low-energy bosonic modes further- more opens new relaxation channels and significantly speeds up the thermalization process. We also consider the effect of the energy distribution of the doped carriers on the screening.
We study the electronic state of the doped Mott-Hubbard insulator within Dynamical Mean Field Theory. The evolution of the finite temperature spectral functions as a function of doping show large redistributions of spectral weight in both antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases. In particular, a metallic antiferromagnetic state is obtained with a low frequency Slater-splitted quasiparticle peak coexisting with Hubbard bands. In the high temperature paramagnetic metallic phase, upon reducing doping, the system has a crossover through a ``bad metal'' state characterized by an anomalous shift o…
The search for quantum spin liquids in frustrated quantum magnets recently has enjoyed a surge of interest, with various candidate materials under intense scrutiny. However, an experimental confirmation of a gapped topological spin liquid remains an open question. Here, we show that circularly-polarized light can provide a novel knob to drive frustrated Mott insulators into a chiral spin liquid (CSL), realizing an elusive quantum spin liquid with topological order. We find that the dynamics of a driven Kagome Mott insulator is well-captured by an effective Floquet spin model, with heating stro…
We investigate the nature of the insulating phases in a bilayer Hubbard model with intralayer coupling $t$ and interlayer coupling $t_{\perp}$ at large interaction strength $U/t$ and half-filling. We consider a dynamical cluster approximation with a cluster size of $N_c=2\times4$, where short-range spatial fluctuations as well as on-site dynamical fluctuations are emphasized. By varying the band splitting ($t_{\perp}/t$), we find that at $t_{\perp}/t\simeq1.5$ the Mott behavior is rapidly suppressed in the momentum sectors ($π,0$) and ($0,π$). At $t_{\perp}/t\simeq2.5$ Mott features dominate i…
In the context of the dynamical mean field theory of the Hubbard model, we study the compressibility near the density driven Mott transition at finite temperatures. We demonstrate this divergence using dynamical mean field theory and Quantum Monte Carlo simulations in the one band and the two band Hubbard model. We supplement this result with considerations based on the Landau theory framework and discuss the relevance of our results to the alpha-gamma endpoint in Cerium.
I construct the spectral function of the Luther-Emery model which describes one-dimensional fermions with one gapless and one gapped degree of freedom, i.e. superconductors and Peierls and Mott insulators, by using symmetries, relations to other models, and known limits. Depending on the relative magnitudes of the charge and spin velocities, and on whether a charge or a spin gap is present, I find spectral functions differing in the number of singularities and presence or absence of anomalous dimensions of fermion operators. I find, for a Peierls system, one singularity with anomalous dimensio…
Studying the antiferromagnetic phase of the Hubbard model by dynamical mean field theory, we observe striking differences with static (Hartree-Fock) mean field: The Slater band is strongly renormalized and spectral weight is transferred to spin-polaron side bands. Already for intermediate values of the interaction $U$ the overall bandwidth is larger than in Hartree-Fock, and the gap is considerably smaller. Such differences survive any renormalization of $U$. Our photoemission experiments for Cr-doped V$_2$O$_3$ show spectra qualitatively well described by dynamical mean field theory.
We investigate the thermoelectric response of correlated electron systems near the density driven Mott transition using the dynamical mean field theory.
We investigate the Mott transition in the Kagomé lattice Hubbard model using a cluster extension of dynamical mean field theory. The calculation of the double occupancy, the density of states, the static and dynamical spin correlation functions demonstrates that the system undergoes the first-order Mott transition at the Hubbard interaction $U/W \sim 1.4$ ($W$:bandwidth). In the metallic phase close to the Mott transition, we find the strong renormalization of three distinct bands, giving rise to the formation of heavy quasiparticles with strong frustration. It is elucidated that the quasipart…
The Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition is studied within a simplified version of the Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (DMFT) in which the coupling between the impurity level and the conduction band is approximated by a single pole at the Fermi energy. In this approach, the DMFT equations are linearized, and the value for the critical Coulomb repulsion U_{\rm c} can be calculated analytically. For the symmetric single-band Hubbard model at zero temperature, the critical value is found to be given by 6 times the square root of the second moment of the free (U=0) density of states. This result is…
The Mott metal-insulator transition in the Hubbard model is studied by constructing a dynamical slave-boson mean-field theory in the limit of large lattice coordination number $z$ that incorporates the binding between doubly occupied (doublon) and empty (holon) sites. On the Mott insulating side where all doublons and holons bond in real space into excitonic pairs leading to the charge gap, the theory simplifies considerably to leading order in $1/\sqrt{z}$, and becomes exact on the infinite-$z$ Bethe lattice. An asymptotic solution is obtained for a continuous Mott transition associated with …
Recent studies of electrical transport, both theoretical and experimental, near the bandwidth-tuned Mott metal-insulator transition have uncovered apparent quantum critical scaling of the electrical resistivity at elevated temperatures, despite the fact that the actual low-temperature phase transition is of first order. This raises the question whether there is a hidden Mott quantum critical point. Here we argue that the dynamical mean-field theory of the Hubbard model admits, in the low-temperature limit, asymptotically scale-invariant (i.e. power-law) solutions, corresponding to the metastab…
We investigate the properties of the frustrated underdoped Hubbard model on the square lattice using two complementary approaches, the dynamical cluster extension of dynamical mean field theory, and variational Monte Carlo simulations of Gutzwiller-Jastrow wavefunctions with backflow corrections. We compare and discuss data for the energy and the double occupancies, as obtained from both approaches. At small dopings, we observe a rapid crossover from a weakly correlated metal at low interaction strength U to a non-Fermi liquid correlated state with strong local spin correlations. Furthermore, …
We study numerically the voltage-induced breakdown of a Mott insulating phase in a system of charged classical particles with long-range interactions. At half-filling on a square lattice this system exhibits Mott localization in the form of a checkerboard pattern. We find universal scaling behavior of the current at the dynamic Mott insulator-metal transition and calculate scaling exponents corresponding to the transition. Our results are in agreement, up to a difference in universality class, with recent experimental evidence of dynamic Mott transition in a system of interacting superconducti…
We apply the dual fermion approach with a second-order approximation to the self-energy to the Mott transition in the two-dimensional Hubbard model. The approximation captures nonlocal dynamical short-range correlations as well as several features observed in studies using cluster dynamical mean-field theory. This includes a strong reduction of the critical interaction and inversion of the slope of the transition lines with respect to single-site dynamical mean-field theory. We show that these effects coincide with a much smaller momentum differentiation compared to cluster methods. We further…
The spin dynamics of electron doped Mott insulators on a triangular lattice is studied based on the $t-J$ model. It is found that the particularly universal behaviors of integrated dynamical spin structure factor seen in the doped Mott insulators on a square lattice, are absent in the doped Mott insulators on a triangular lattice, indicating the presence of the normal state gap. As a result, the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/$T_{1}$ divided by $T$ reduces with decreasing temperatures in the temperature region above 0.2$J$$\approx$50K, then follows a Curie-Weiss-like behavior at the temperatur…
The Anderson--Hubbard Hamiltonian at half--filling is investigated within dynamical mean--field theory at zero temperature. The local density of states is calculated by taking the geometric and arithmetic mean, respectively. The non--magnetic ground state phase diagrams obtained within the different averaging schemes are compared.
Based on dynamical cluster approximation (DCA) quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we study the interaction-driven Mott metal-insulator transition (MIT) in the half-filled Hubbard model on the anisotropic two-dimensional triangular lattice, where the degree of frustration is varied between the unfrustrated case and the fully frustrated, isotropic triangular lattice. Upon increasing the DCA cluster size, we analyze the evolution of the MIT phase boundary as a function of frustration in the phase diagram spanned by the interaction strength and temperature, and provide a quantitative description of …
The evolution from an anomalous metallic phase to a Mott insulator within the two-dimensional Hubbard model is investigated by means of the Cellular Dynamical Mean-Field Theory. We show that the density-driven Mott metal-insulator transition is approached in a non-uniform way in different regions of the momentum space. This gives rise to a breakup of the Fermi surface and to the formation of hot and cold regions, whose position depends on the hole or electron like nature of the carriers in the system.
We apply the approximate analytic methods to the investigation of the band structure of the asymmetric Hubbard model where the chemical potentials and electron transfer parameters depend on the electron spin (type of quasiparticles). The Hubbard-I and alloy-analogy approximations are the simplest approximations which are used. Within the alloy-analogy approximation, the energy band of particles does not depend on the transfer parameter of particles of another sort. It means that the gap in the spectrum opens at the critical value $U_{c}$ that is the same in two different limiting cases: the Fa…
We perform a detailed study of the phase transitions and mechanisms of electron localization in the extended Hubbard model using the dynamical cluster approximation on a $2\times 2$ cluster. We explore the interplay of charge order and Mott physics. We find that a nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction $V$ causes "screening" effects close to the Mott phase transition, pushing the phase boundary to larger values of $U$. We also demonstrate the different effects of $V$ on correlations in metallic and insulating regimes and document the different correlation aspects of charge order and Mott states.
We study the double occupancy in a fermionic Mott insulator at half-filling generated via a dynamical periodic modulation of the hopping amplitude. Tuning the modulation amplitude, we describe a crossover in the nature of doublon-holon excitations from a Fermi Golden Rule regime to damped Rabi oscillations. The decay time of excited states diverges at a critical modulation strength, signaling the transition to a dynamically bound non-equilibrium state of doublon-holon pairs. A setup using a fermionic quantum gas should allow to study the critical exponents.
We introduce a novel extension of the Gutzwiller variational wavefunction able to deal with insulators that escape any mean-field like description, as for instance non-magnetic insulators. As an application, we study the Mott transition from a paramagnetic metal into a non-magnetic Peierls, or valence-bond, Mott insulator. We analyze this model by means of our Gutzwiller wavefunction analytically in the limit of large coordination lattices, where we find that: (1) the Mott transition is first order; (2) the Peierls gap is large in the Mott insulator, although it is mainly contributed by the el…
We present a formalism for strongly correlated electrons systems which consists in a local approximation of the dynamical three-leg interaction vertex. This vertex is self-consistently computed with a quantum impurity model with dynamical interactions in the charge and spin channels, similar to dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) approaches. The electronic self-energy and the polarization are both frequency and momentum dependent. The method interpolates between the spin-fluctuation or GW approximations at weak coupling and the atomic limit at strong coupling. We apply the formalism to the Hubb…
Simulations are carried out based on the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) in order to investigate the properties of correlated thin films for various values of the chemical potential, temperature, interaction strength, and applied transverse electric field. Application of a sufficiently strong field to a thin film at half-filling leads to the appearance of conducting regions near the surfaces of the film, whereas in doped slabs the application of a field leads to a conductivity enhancement on one side of the film and a gradual transition to the insulating state on the opposite side. In addit…
We compute the time-resolved photoemission spectrum after photo-doping in a two-dimensional Mott-Hubbard insulator. We find that the relaxation rate of high-energy photo-doped electrons in the paramagnetic phase scales with the strength of the nearest-neighbor spin correlations, which implies a pronounced increase of the relaxation times with temperature and excitation density. Finite doping, in contrast, opens additional scattering channels and leads to a faster relaxation. To obtain our results we have implemented a nonequilibrium version of the dynamical cluster approximation (DCA), which, …
At low energies the charge sector of one dimensional Mott insulators can be described in terms of a quantum Sine-Gordon model. Using exact results derived from integrability it is possible to determine dynamical properties like the frequency dependent optical conductivity. We compare the exact results to perturbation theory and renormalisation group calculations. We also discuss the application of our results to experiments on quasi-1D organic conductors.
The phase diagram of model Mott-insulator--band-insulator heterostructures is studied using the semiclassical approximation to the dynamical-mean-field method as a function of thickness, coupling constant, and charge confinement. An interface-stabilized ferromagnetic phase is found, allow the study of its competition and possible coexistence with the antiferromagnetic order characteristic of the bulk Mott insulator.
In the context of the dynamical mean-field theory of the Hubbard model, we identify microscopically an order parameter for the finite temperature Mott endpoint. We derive a Landau functional of the order parameter. We then use the order parameter theory to elucidate the singular behavior of various physical quantities which are experimentally accessible.
Density of states, dynamic (optical) conductivity and phase diagram of strongly correlated and strongly disordered paramagnetic Anderson-Hubbard model are analyzed within the generalized dynamical mean field theory (DMFT+Σapproximation). Strong correlations are accounted by DMFT, while disorder is taken into account via the appropriate generalization of self-consistent theory of localization. The DMFT effective single impurity problem is solved by numerical renormalization group (NRG) and we consider the three-dimensional system with semi-elliptic density of states. Correlated metal, Mott insu…
The spectrum of the strongly correlated systems usually shows resonant peaks at finite energy, with examples in the 115 Ce family which are reproduced by the dynamical mean-field theory. A similar structure has been seen recently in the orbitally selective Mott (OSM) phase of two-band model, known as doublon-holon bound state, with implications on the fate of such phase in the zero Hund's coupling limit. We show that these features can be captured with the slave-particle methods once their Hilbert space is taken into account. We use slave-spin calculations, justifiable in the limit of large di…
We reformulate the time-dependent Gutzwiller approximation by M. Schiró and M. Fabrizio [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 076401 (2010)] in the framework of slave-boson mean-field theory, which is used to investigate the dynamical Mott transition of the generic two-band Hubbard model at half filling upon an interaction quench. Interorbital fluctuations lead to notable changes with respect to the single-band case. The singular dynamical transition is replaced by a broad regime of long-lived fluctuations between metallic and insulating states, accompanied by intriguing precursor behavior. A mapping to a sp…
