We present a short review describing the use of noncommutative space-time in quantum-deformed dynamical theories: classical and quantum mechanics as well as classical and quantum field theory. We expose the role of Hopf algebras and their realizations (noncommutative modules) as important mathematical tool describing quantum-deformed symmetries: quantum Lie groups and quantum Lie algebras. We consider in some detail the most studied examples of noncommutative space-time geometry: the canonical and $κ$-deformed cases. Finally we briefly describe the modifications of Einstein gravity obtained by introduction of noncommutative space-time coordinates.
The difficulties with the measurability of classical space-time distances are considered. We outline the framework of quantum deformations of D=4 space-time symmetries with dimensionfull deformation parameter, and present some recent results.
Starting from noncommutative generalization of Minkowski space we consider quantum deformed relativistic symmetries which lead to the modification of kinematics of special relativity. The noncommutative field theory framework described by means of the star product formalism is briefly described. We briefly present the quantum modifications of Einstein gravity
It is outlined how deformations of field theoretical rigid symmetries can be constructed and classified by cohomological means in the extended antifield formalism. Special attention is devoted to deformations referring only to a subset of the rigid symmetries of a given model and leading to a nontrivial extension of the graded Lie algebra associated with that subset. The method is illustrated for a D=4, N=2 supersymmetric model where the central extension of the supersymmetry algebra emerges via a deformation. Deformations of gauge fixed actions with a BRST symmetry are discussed too and illus…
Firstly we discuss different versions of noncommutative space-time and corresponding appearance of quantum space-time groups. Further we consider the relation between quantum deformations of relativistic symmetries and so-called doubly special relativity (DSR) theories.
We shall outline two ways of introducing the modification of Einstein's relativistic symmetries of special relativity theory - the Poincaré symmetries. The most complete way of introducing the modifications is via the noncocommutative Hopf-algebraic structure describing quantum symmetries. Two types of quantum relativistic symmetries are described, one with constant commutator of quantum Minkowski space coordinates ($θ_{μν}$-deformation) and second with Lie-algebraic structure of quantum space-time, introducing so-called $κ$-deformation. The third fundamental constant of Nature - fundamental m…
Supersymmetric and parasupersymmetric quantum mechanics are now recognized as two further parts of quantum mechanics containing a lot of new informations enlightening (solvable) physical applications. Both contents are here analysed in connection with generalized quantum deformations. In fact, the parasupersymmetric context is visited when the order of paraquantization p is limited to the first nontrivial value p = 2.
We consider two new classes of twisted D=4 quantum Poincaré symmetries described as the dual pairs of noncocommutative Hopf algebras. Firstly we investigate a two-parameter class of twisted Poincaré algebras which provide the examples of Lie-algebraic noncommutativity of the translations. The corresponding associative star-products and new deformed Lie-algebraic Minkowski spaces are introduced. We discuss further the twist deformations of Poincaré symmetries generated by the twist with its carrier in Lorentz algebra. We describe corresponding deformed Poincaré group which provides the quadrati…
In this paper we present a method of deforming to first order the stress-tensor and the supercurrent of the superstring corresponding to turning on NS-NS bosonic fields. Furthermore we discuss the difficulties associated with turning on spacetime fermions and R-R bosons. We also derive the gauge symmetries of the massless spacetime fields.
We provide first explicite examples of quantum deformations of D=4 conformal algebra with mass-like deformation parameters, in applications to quantum gravity effects related with Planck mass. It is shown that one of the classical $r$-matrices defined on the Borel subalgebra of $sl(4)$ with $o(4,2)$ reality conditions describes the light-cone $κ$-deformation of D=4 Poincaré algebra. We embed this deformation into the three-parameter family of generalized $κ$-deformations, with $r$-matrices depending additionally on the dilatation generator. Using the extended Jordanian twists framework we desc…
We define a class of $A_\infty$-algebras that are obtained by deformations of higher spin symmetries. While higher spin symmetries of a free CFT form an associative algebra, the slightly broken higher spin symmetries give rise to a minimal $A_\infty$-algebra extending the associative one. These $A_\infty$-algebras are related to non-commutative deformation quantization much as the unbroken higher spin symmetries result from the conventional deformation quantization. In the case of three dimensions there is an additional parameter that the $A_\infty$-structure depends on, which is to be related…
We describe the classical $o(3,2)$ $r$-matrices as generating the quantum deformations of either D=3 conformal algebra with mass-like deformation parameters or D=4 $AdS$ algebra with dimensionless deformation parameters. We describe the quantization of classical $o(3,2)$ $r$-matrices via Drinfeld twist method which locates the deformation in the coalgebra sector. Further we obtain the quantum $o(3,2)$ algebra in a convenient Hopf algebra form by considering suitable deformation maps from classical to deformed $o(3,2)$ algebra basis. It appears that if we pass from $κ$-deformed D =3 conformal a…
We consider the simplest class of Lie-algebraic deformations of space-time algebra, with the selection of $κ$-deformations as providing quantum deformation of relativistic framework. We recall that the $κ$-deformation along any direction in Minkowski space can be obtained. Some problems of the formalism of $κ$-deformations will be considered. We shall comment on the conformal extension of light-like $κ$-deformation as well as on the applications to astrophysical problems.
We consider the deformations of a supersymmetric quantum field theory by adding spacetime-dependent terms to the action. We propose to describe the renormalization of such deformations in terms of some cohomological invariants, a class of solutions of a Maurer-Cartan equation. We consider the strongly coupled limit of $N=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. In the context of AdS/CFT correspondence, we explain what corresponds to our invariants in classical supergravity. There is a leg amputation procedure, which constructs a solution of the Maurer-Cartan equation from tree diagramms of SUGRA. …
In ${\cal N}=5, 6, 8$ supergravities there are hidden symmetries of equations of motion, described by duality groups $SU(1,5), \, SO^*(12), \, E_{7(7)}$ respectively. UV divergences and known candidate counterterms violate the deformed duality symmetry current conservation. Extra higher derivative terms in the action are required to restore duality. We study the effect of a two-vector part of the counterterm for ${\cal N}\geq 5$ supergravities using the universality of the symplectic structure of extended supergravities. We construct a compact form of a deformed action with infinite number of …
In this work we study the deformations into Lie bialgebras of the three relativistic Lie algebras: de Sitter, Anti-de Sitter and Poincaré, which describe the symmetries of the three maximally symmetric spacetimes. These algebras represent the centrepiece of the kinematics of special relativity (and its analogue in (Anti-)de Sitter spacetime), and provide the simplest framework to build physical models in which inertial observers are equivalent. Such a property can be expected to be preserved by Quantum Gravity, a theory which should build a length/energy scale into the microscopic structure of…
Based on the principle of relativity and the postulate on universal invariant constants (c,l), all possible kinematics can be set up with sub-symmetries of the Umov-Weyl-Fock transformations for the inertial motions. Further, in the combinatory approach, all these symmetries are intrinsically related to each other, e.g. to the very important dS kinematics for the cosmic scale physics.
We argue that recently proposed by Amelino-Camelia et all [1,2] so-called doubly special relativity (DSR), with deformed boost transformations identical with the formulae for $κ$-deformed kinematics in bicrossproduct basis is a classical special relativity in nonlinear disguise. The choice of symmetric composition law for deformed fourmomenta as advocated in [1, 2] implies that DSR is obtained by considering nonlinear fourmomenta basis of classical Poincaré algebra and it does not lead to noncommutative space-time. We also show how to construct large two classes of doubly special relativity th…
We classify kinematical Lie algebras in dimension $D \geq 4$. This is approached via the classification of deformations of the relevant static kinematical Lie algebra. We also classify the deformations of the universal central extension of the static kinematical Lie algebra in dimension $D\geq 4$. In addition we determine which of these Lie algebras admit an invariant inner product.
We present a deformation theory approach to the classification of kinematical Lie algebras in 3+1 dimensions and present calculations leading to the classifications of all deformations of the static kinematical Lie algebra and of its universal central extension, up to isomorphism. In addition we determine which of these Lie algebras admit an invariant symmetric inner product. Among the new results, we find some deformations of the centrally extended static kinematical Lie algebra which are extensions (but not central) of deformations of the static kinematical Lie algebra. This paper lays the g…
We recently proposed an integrable q-deformation of the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring action. Here we give details on the hamiltonian origin and construction of this deformation. The procedure is a generalization of the one previously developed for deforming principal chiral and symmetric space sigma-models. We also show that the original psu(2,2|4) symmetry is replaced in the deformed theory by a classical analog of the quantum group U_q(psu(2,2|4)) with q real. The relation between q and the deformation parameter entering the action is given. The framework used to derive the deformation also enabl…
We construct discrete symmetry transformations for deformed relativistic kinematics based on group valued momenta. We focus on the specific example of kappa-deformations of the Poincare algebra with associated momenta living on (a sub-manifold of) de Sitter space. Our approach relies on the description of quantum states constructed from deformed kinematics and the observable charges associated with them. The results we present provide the first step towards the analysis of experimental bounds on the deformation parameter kappa to be derived via precision measurements of discrete symmetries and…
We employ new calculational technique and present complete list of classical $r$-matrices for $D=4$ complex homogeneous orthogonal Lie algebra $\mathfrak{o}(4;\mathbb{C})$, the rotational symmetry of four-dimensional complex space-time. Further applying reality conditions we obtain the classical $r$-matrices for all possible real forms of $\mathfrak{o}(4;\mathbb{C})$: Euclidean $\mathfrak{o}(4)$, Lorentz $\mathfrak{o}(3,1)$, Kleinian $\mathfrak{o}(2,2)$ and quaternionic $\mathfrak{o}^{\star}(4)$ Lie algebras. For $\mathfrak{o}(3,1)$ we get known four classical $D=4$ Lorentz $r$-matrices, but f…
We introduce a computational technique for studying non-supersymmetric deformations of domain wall solutions of interest in AdS/CFT. We focus on the Klebanov-Strassler solution, which is dual to a confining gauge theory. From an analysis of asymptotics we find that there are three deformations that leave the ten-dimensional supergravity solution regular and preserve the global bosonic symmetries of the supersymmetric solution. Also, we show that there are no regular near-extremal deformations preserving the global symmetries, as one might expect from the existence of a gap in the gauge theory.
In our previous paper we obtained a full classification of nonequivalent quasitriangular quantum deformations for the complex $D=4$ Euclidean Lie symmetry $\mathfrak{o}(4;\mathbb{C})$. The result was presented in the form of a list consisting of three three-parameter, one two-parameter and one one-parameter nonisomorphic classical $r$-matrices which provide 'directions' of the nonequivalent quantizations of $\mathfrak{o}(4;\mathbb{C})$. Applying reality conditions to the complex $\mathfrak{o}(4;\mathbb{C})$ $r$-matrices we obtained the nonisomorphic classical $r$-matrices for all possible real…
We give a pedagogical introduction to the basics of deformations of relativistic symmetries and the Hilbert spaces of free quantum fields built as their representations. We focus in particular on the example of a $κ$-deformed scalar quantum field for which the generators of spatial translations that label the field modes act according to a deformed Leibnitz rule. We explore the richer structure of the $κ$-Fock space and point out possible physical consequences of the deformation.
We show that $T \bar T, J \bar T$ and $J T_a$ - deformed classical CFTs possess an infinite set of symmetries that take the form of a field-dependent generalization of two-dimensional conformal transformations. If, in addition, the seed CFTs possess an affine $U(1)$ symmetry, we show that it also survives in the deformed theories, again in a field-dependent form. These symmetries can be understood as the infinitely-extended conformal and $U(1)$ symmetries of the underlying two-dimensional CFT, seen through the prism of the "dynamical coordinates" that characterise each of these deformations. W…
Algebraic deformations provide a systematic approach to generalizing the symmetries of a physical theory through the introduction of new fundamental constants. The applications of deformations of Lie algebras and Hopf algebras to both spacetime and internal symmetries are discussed. As a specific example we demonstrate how deforming the classical flavor group $SU(3)$ to the quantum group $SU_q(3)\equiv U_q(su(3))$ (a Hopf algebra) and taking into account electromagnetic mass splitting within isospin multiplets leads to new and exceptionally accurate baryon mass sum rules that agree perfectly w…
We propose a unified description for the constants of motion for superintegrable deformations of the oscillator and Coulomb systems on N-dimensional Euclidean space, sphere and hyperboloid. We also consider the duality between these generalized systems and present some example.
Recently it has been argued that tree-level scattering amplitudes in N=4 Yang-Mills theory are uniquely determined by a careful study of their superconformal and Yangian symmetries. However, at one-loop order these symmetries are known to become anomalous due to infrared divergences. We compute these one-loop anomalies for amplitudes defined through dimensional regularisation by studying the tree-level symmetry transformations of the unitarity branch cuts, keeping track of the crucial collinear terms arising from the holomorphic anomaly. We extract the superconformal anomalies and show that th…
We study the problem of finding exactly marginal deformations of N=1 superconformal field theories in four dimensions. We find that the only way a marginal chiral operator can become not exactly marginal is for it to combine with a conserved current multiplet. Additionally, we find that the space of exactly marginal deformations, also called the "conformal manifold," is the quotient of the space of marginal couplings by the complexified continuous global symmetry group. This fact explains why exactly marginal deformations are ubiquitous in N=1 theories. Our method turns the problem of enumerat…
Recent work showed that $κ$-deformations can describe the quantum deformation of several relativistic models that have been proposed in the context of quantum gravity phenomenology. Starting from the Poincaré algebra of special-relativistic symmetries, one can toggle the curvature parameter $Λ$, the Planck scale quantum deformation parameter $κ$ and the speed of light parameter $c$ to move to the well-studied $κ$-Poincaré algebra, the (quantum) (A)dS algebra, the (quantum) Galilei and Carroll algebras and their curved versions. In this review, we survey the properties and relations of these al…
We study a family of noncommutative spacetimes constructed by one four-vector. The large set of coordinate commutation relations described in this way includes many cases that are widely studied in the literature. The Hopf-algebra symmetries of these noncommutative spacetimes, as well as the structures of star product and twist, are introduced and considered at first order in the deformation, described by four parameters. We also study the deformations to relativistic kinematics implied by this framework, and calculate the most general expression for the momentum dependence of the Lorentz tran…
We study the symmetries of the N=1 exactly marginal deformations of N=4 Super Yang-Mills theory. For generic values of the parameters, these deformations are known to break the SU(3) part of the R-symmetry group down to a discrete subgroup. However, a closer look from the perspective of quantum groups reveals that the Lagrangian is in fact invariant under a certain Hopf algebra which is a non-standard quantum deformation of the algebra of functions on SU(3). Our discussion is motivated by the desire to better understand why these theories have significant differences from N=4 SYM regarding the…
Abelian vector fields non-minimally coupled to uncharged scalar fields arise in many contexts. We investigate here through algebraic methods their consistent deformations ("gaugings"), i.e., the deformations that preserve the number (but not necessarily the form or the algebra) of the gauge symmetries. Infinitesimal consistent deformations are given by the BRST cohomology classes at ghost number zero. We parametrize explicitly these classes in terms of various types of global symmetries and corresponding Noether currents through the characteristic cohomology related to antifields and equations…
We discussed quantum deformations of D=4 Lorentz and Poincare algebras. In the case of Poincare algebra it is shown that almost all classical r-matrices of S. Zakrzewski classification correspond to twisted deformations of Abelian and Jordanian types. A part of twists corresponding to the r-matrices of Zakrzewski classification are given in explicit form.
In this thesis we study different aspects of noncommutativity in quantum mechanics, field theory and gravity. We give particular emphasis on the underlying symmetries of these theories. Deformations of usual symmetries like the external space time symmetries and the internal gauge symmetry in noncommutative theories are analyzed in detail.
We discuss quantum deformations of Lie algebra as described by the noncoassociative modification of its coalgebra structure. We consider for simplicity the quantum $D=1$ Galilei algebra with four generators: energy $H$, boost $B$, momentum $P$ and central generator $M$ (mass generator). We describe the nonprimitive coproducts for $H$ and $B$ and show that their noncocommutative and noncoassociative structure is determined by the two-body interaction terms. Further we consider the case of physical Galilei symmetry in three dimensions. Finally we discuss the noninteraction theorem for manifestly…
It is possible that relativistic symmetries become deformed in the semiclassical regime of quantum gravity. Mathematically, such deformations lead to the noncommutativity of spacetime geometry and non-vanishing curvature of momentum space. The best studied example is given by the $κ$-Poincaré Hopf algebra, associated with $κ$-Minkowski space. On the other hand, the curved momentum space is a well-known feature of particles coupled to three-dimensional gravity. The purpose of this thesis was to explore some properties and mutual relations of the above two models. In particular, I study extensiv…
The deformations of higher-spin symmetries induced by cubic interactions of symmetric massless bosonic fields are analyzed within the metric-like formalism. Our analysis amends the existing classification according to gauge-algebra deformations taking into account also gauge-transformation deformations. In particular, we identify a class of couplings which leave the gauge algebra Abelian but deform one (out of three) gauge transformation, and another class of couplings which deform all three gauge transformations in (A)dS but only two in the flat-space limit. The former class is related to hig…
We prove the existence of hidden symmetries in the general relativity theory defined by exact solutions with generic off-diagonal metrics, nonholonomic (non-integrable) constraints, and deformations of the frame and linear connection structure. A special role in characterization of such spacetimes is played by the corresponding nonholonomic generalizations of Stackel-Killing and Killing-Yano tensors. There are constructed new classes of black hole solutions and studied hidden symmetries for ellipsoidal and/or solitonic deformations of "prime" Kerr-Sen black holes into "target" off-diagonal met…
Nonrelativistic string theory is a self-contained corner of string theory, with its string spectrum enjoying a Galilean-invariant dispersion relation. This theory is unitary and ultraviolet complete, and can be studied from first principles. In these notes, we focus on the bosonic closed string sector. In curved spacetime, nonrelativistic string theory is defined by a renormalizable quantum nonlinear sigma model in background fields, following certain symmetry principles that disallow any deformation towards relativistic string theory. We review previous proposals of such symmetry principles a…
A deformation of special relativistic kinematics (possible signal of a theory of quantum gravity at low energies) leads to a modification of the notion of spacetime. At the classical level, this modification is required when one considers a model including single- or multi-interaction processes, for which absolute locality in terms of canonical space-time coordinates is lost. We discuss the different alternatives for observable effects in the propagation of a particle over very large distances that emerge from the new notion of spacetime. A central ingredient in the discussion is the cluster d…
We revisit the identity-based solutions for tachyon condensation in open bosonic string field theory (SFT) from the viewpoint of the sine-square deformation (SSD). The string Hamiltonian derived from the simplest solution includes the sine-square factor, which is the same as that of an open system with SSD in the context of condensed matter physics. We show that the open string system with SSD or its generalization exhibits decoupling of the left and right moving modes and so it behaves like a system with a periodic boundary condition. With a method developed by Ishibashi and Tada, we construc…
We propose a new Doubly Special Relativity theory based on the generalization of the $κ$-deformation of the Poincaré algebra acting along one of the null directions. We recall the quantum Hopf structure of such deformed Poincaré algebra and use it to derive the phase space commutation relations. As in the DSR based on the standard quantum $κ$-Poincaré algebra we find that the space time is non-commutative. We investigate the fate of the properties of Special Relativity in the null basis: the split of the algebra of Lorentz and momentum generators into kinematical and dynamical parts, the actio…
The kinematical part of general theory of deformational structures on smooth manifolds is developed. We introduce general concept of d-objects deformation, then within the set of all such deformations we develop some special algebra and investigate group and homotopical properties of the set. In case of proper deformations some propositions, generalizing isometry theory on Riemannian manifolds are formulated.
