We give a list of finite groups containing all finite groups $G$ such that the group of units $\Z G^*$ of the integral group ring $\Z G$ is subgroup separable. There are only two types of these groups $G$ for which we cannot decide wether $ZG^*$ is subgroup separable, namely the central product $Q_8 Y D_8$ and $Q_8\times C_p{with} p \text{prime and} p\equiv -1 \mod (8)$.
This paper is devoted to the investigation of the property of order separability for HNN extensions and free products with commutative subgroups. Particularly it was proven that HNN extension of a free group with maximal connected cyclic subgroups is 2-order separable.
It is proved that all finitely generated subgroups of generalized free product of two groups are finitely separable provided that free factors have this property and amalgamated subgroups are normal in corresponding factors and satisfy the maximum condition for subgroups.
We prove that the finitely presentable subgroups of residually free groups are separable and that the subgroups of type $\mathrm{FP}_\infty$ are virtual retracts. We describe a uniform solution to the membership problem for finitely presentable subgroups of residually free groups.
This paper studies effective separability for subgroups of finitely generated nilpotent groups and more broadly effective subgroup separability of finitely generated nilpotent groups. We provide upper and lower bounds that are polynomial with respect to the logarithm of the word length for infinite index subgroups of nilpotent groups. In the case of normal subgroups, we provide an exact computation generalizing work of the second author. We introduce a function that quantifies subgroup separability, and we provide polynomial upper and lower bounds. We finish by demonstrating that our results e…
A group $G$ is called subgroup conjugacy separable (abbreviated as SCS), if any two finitely generated and non-conjugate subgroups of $G$ remain non-conjugate in some finite quotient of $G$. We prove that free groups and the fundamental groups of orientable closed compact surfaces are SCS.
A group G is called subgroup conjugacy separable (abbreviated as SCS), if any two finitely generated and non-conjugate subgroups of G remain non-conjugate in some finite quotient of G. We prove that the free groups and the fundamental groups of finite trees of finite groups with some normalizer condition are SCS. We also introduce the subgroup into-conjugacy separability property and prove that the above groups have this property too.
We prove that every free metabelian non--cyclic group has a finitely generated isolated subgroup which is not separable in the class of nilpotent groups. As a corollary we prove that for every prime number $p$ an arbitrary free metabelian non--cyclic group has a finitely generated $p'$--isolated subgroup which is not $p$--separable.
Free products of two residually finite groups with amalgamated retracts are considered. It is proved that a cyclic subgroup of such a group is not finitely separable if, and only if, it is conjugated with a subgroup of a free factor which is not finitely separable in this factor. A similar result is obtained for the case of separability in the class of finite p-groups.
Let G be a finitely generated linear group over a field of characteristic 0. Suppose that every solvable subgroup of G is polycyclic. Then the claim is made that any solvable subgroup of G is separable. This is proven for G=SL_n(Z). However, the proof of the main theorem in section 4 is incomplete.
We find a condition on the underlying graph of an Artin group that fully determines if it is subgroup separable. As a consequence, an Artin group is subgroup separable if and only if it can be obtained from Artin groups of ranks at most 2 via a finite sequence of free products and direct products with the infinite cyclic group. This result generalizes the Metaftsis-Raptis criterion for Right-Angled Artin groups.
The main result of this article is a refinement of the well-known subgroup separability results of Hall and Scott for free and surface groups. We show that for any finitely generated subgroup, there is a finite dimensional representation of the free or surface group that separates the subgroup in the induced Zariski topology. As a corollary, we establish a polynomial upper bound on the size of the quotients used to separate a finitely generated subgroup in a free or surface group.
Let G be the free product of groups A and B with commuting subgroups H \leqslant A and K \leqslant B, and let C be the class of all finite groups or the class of all finite p-groups. We derive the description of all C-separable cyclic subgroups of G provided this group is residually a C-group. We prove, in particular, that if A, B are finitely generated nilpotent groups and H, K are p'-isolated in the free factors, then all p'-isolated cyclic subgroups of G are separable in the class of all finite p-groups. The same statement is true provided A, B are free and H, K are p'-isolated and cyclic.
We show that all groups in a very large class of Coxeter groups are locally quasiconvex and have uniform membership problem solvable in quadratic time. If a group in the class satisfies a further hypothesis it is subgroup separable and relevant homomorphisms are also calculable in quadratic time. The algorithm also decides if a finitely generated subgroup has finite index.
Let $G$ be a free product of two groups with amalgamated subgroup, $π$ be either the set of all prime numbers or the one-element set \{$p$\} for some prime number $p$. Denote by $Σ$ the family of all cyclic subgroups of group $G$, which are separable in the class of all finite $π$-groups. Obviously, cyclic subgroups of the free factors, which aren't separable in these factors by the family of all normal subgroups of finite $π$-index of group $G$, the subgroups conjugated with them and all subgroups, which aren't $π^{\prime}$-isolated, don't belong to $Σ$. Some sufficient conditions are obtaine…
We introduce the notion of finite stature of a family $\{H_i\}$ of subgroups of a group $G$. We investigate the separability of subgroups of a group $G$ that splits as a graph of hyperbolic special groups with quasiconvex edge groups. We prove that when the vertex groups of $G$ have finite stature, then quasiconvex subgroups of the vertex groups of $G$ are separable in $G$. We present some partial results in a relatively hyperbolic framework.
A group $G$ is called subgroup conjugacy separable (abbreviated as SCS) if any two finitely generated and non-conjugate subgroups of $G$ remain non-conjugate in some finite quotient of $G$. An into-conjugacy version of SCS is abbreviated by SICS. We prove that if $G$ is a hyperbolic group, $H_1$ is a quasiconvex subgroup of $G$, and $H_2$ is a subgroup of $G$ which is elementwise conjugate into $H_1$, then there exists a finite index subgroup of $H_2$ which is conjugate into $H_1$. As corollary, we deduce that fundamental groups of closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds and torsion-free small cancellat…
It is proved that for any prime $p$ a finitely generated nilpotent group is conjugacy separable in the class of finite $p$-groups if and only if the torsion subgroup of it is a finite $p$-group and the quotient group by the torsion subgroup is abelian.
Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field $k$. The aim of this paper is to present a method to find triples $(G,M,H)$ with the following three properties. Property 1: $G$ is simple and $k$ has characteristic 2. Property 2: $H$ and $M$ are closed reductive subgroups of $G$ such that $H<M<G$, and $(G,M)$ is a reductive pair. Property 3: $H$ is $G$-completely reducible, but not $M$-completely reducible. We exhibit our method by presenting a new example of such a triple in $G=E_7$. Then we consider a rationality problem and a problem concerning con…
We show that two uniform lattices of a regular right-angled Fuchsian building are commensurable, provided the chamber is a polygon with at least six edges. We show that in an arbitrary Gromov-hyperbolic regular right-angled building associated to a graph product of finite groups, a uniform lattice is commensurable with the graph product provided all of its quasiconvex subgroups are separable. We obtain a similar result for uniform lattices of the Davis complex of Gromov-hyperbolic two-dimensional Coxeter groups. We also prove that every extension of a uniform lattice of a CAT(0) square complex…
We study a class $\mathfrak{M}$ of cyclically presented groups that includes both finite and infinite groups and is defined by a certain combinatorial condition on the defining relations. This class includes many finite metacyclic generalized Fibonacci groups that have been previously identified in the literature. By analysing their shift extensions we show that the groups in the class $\mathfrak{M}$ are are coherent, subgroup separable, satisfy the Tits alternative, possess finite index subgroups of geometric dimension at most two, and that their finite subgroups are all metacyclic. Many of t…
A Schur ring (S-ring) over a group $G$ is called separable if every of its similaritities is induced by isomorphism. We establish a criterion for an S-ring to be separable in the case when the group $G$ is cyclic. Using this criterion, we prove that any S-ring over a cyclic $p$-group is separable and that the class of separable circulant S-rings is closed with respect to duality.
It was proved that for any finite set of elements of a free product of residually finite groups such that no two of them belong to conjugate cyclic subgroups and each of them do not belong to a subgroup which is conjugate a to free factor there exists a homomorphism of the free product onto a finite group such that the order of the image of each fixed element is an arbitrary multiple of a constant number.
We give a new, effective proof of the separability of cubically convex-cocompact subgroups of special groups. As a consequence, we show that if $G$ is a virtually compact special hyperbolic group, and $Q\leq G$ is a $K$-quasiconvex subgroup, then any $g\in G-Q$ of word-length at most $n$ is separated from $Q$ by a subgroup whose index is polynomial in $n$ and exponential in $K$. This generalizes a result of Bou-Rabee and the authors on residual finiteness growth and a result of the second author on surface groups.
We prove that finite index subgroups of right angled Artin groups are conjugacy separable. We then apply this result to establish various properties of other classes of groups. In particular, we show that any word hyperbolic Coxeter group contains a conjugacy separable subgroup of finite index and has a residually finite outer automorphism group. Another consequence of the main result is that Bestvina-Brady groups are conjugacy separable and have solvable conjugacy problem.
We prove new separability results about free groups. Namely, if $H_1, \ldots , H_k$ are infinite index, finitely generated subgroups of a non-abelian free group $F$, then there exists a homomorphism onto some alternating group $f:F \twoheadrightarrow A_m$ such that whenever $H_i$ is not conjugate into $H_j$, then $f(H_i)$ is not conjugate into $f(H_j)$. The proof is probabilistic. We count the expected number of fixed points of $f(H_i)$'s and their subgroups under a carefully constructed measure.
Let G be a reductive linear algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p > 0. A subgroup of G is said to be separable in G if its global and infinitesimal centralizers have the same dimension. We study the interaction between the notion of separability and Serre's concept of G-complete reducibility for subgroups of G. The separability hypothesis appears in many general theorems concerning G-complete reducibility. We demonstrate that many of these results fail without this hypothesis. On the other hand, we prove that if G is a connected reductive group and p is very go…
An $S$-ring (a Schur ring) is said to be separable with respect to a class of groups $\mathcal{K}$ if every its algebraic isomorphism to an $S$-ring over a group from $\mathcal{K}$ is induced by a combinatorial isomorphism. We prove that every Schur ring over an abelian group $G$ of order $4p$, where $p$ is a prime, is separable with respect to the class of abelian groups. This implies that the Weisfeiler-Leman dimension of the class of Cayley graphs over $G$ is at most 2.
Let $D$ be a division ring with center $F$ and $N$ a subnormal subgroup of the multiplicative group $D^*$ of $D$. Assume that $N$ contains a non-abelian solvable subgroup. In this paper, we study the problem on the existence of non-abelian free subgroups in $N$. In particular, we show that if either $N$ is algebraic over $F$ or $F$ is uncountable, then $N$ contains a non-abelian free subgroup.
In this paper we study conjugacy and subgroup separability properties in the class of nilpotent $\mathbb{Q}[x]$-powered groups. Many of the techniques used to study these properties in the context of ordinary nilpotent groups carry over naturally to this more general class. Among other results, we offer a generalization of a theorem due to G. Baumslag. The generalized version states that if $G$ is a finitely $\mathbb{Q}[x]$-generated $\mathbb{Q}[x]$-torsion-free nilpotent $\mathbb{Q}[x]$-powered group and $H$ is a $\mathbb{Q}[x]$-isolated subgroup of $G,$ then for any prime $π\in \mathbb{Q}[x]…
The description of the subgroup structure of a non-commutative division ring is the subject of the intensive study in the theory of division rings in particular, and of the theory of skew linear groups in general. This study is still so far to be complete. In this paper, we study this problem for weakly locally finite division rings. Such division rings constitute a large class which strictly contains the class of locally finite division rings.
Suppose that $\mathcal{C}$ is a class of groups consisting only of periodic groups and $\mathfrak{P}(\mathcal{C})^{\prime}$ is the set of prime numbers each of which does not divide the order of any element of a $\mathcal{C}$-group. A subgroup $Y$ of a group $X$ is called a) $\mathcal{C}$-separable in this group if, for each $x \in X \setminus Y$, there exists a homomorphism $σ$ of $X$ onto a group from $\mathcal{C}$ such that $xσ\notin Yσ$; b) $\mathfrak{P}(\mathcal{C})^{\prime}$-isolated in $X$ if, for any $x \in X$, $q \in \mathfrak{P}(\mathcal{C})^{\prime}$, the inclusion $x^{q} \in Y$ imp…
An $S$-ring (a Schur ring) is said to be separable with respect to a class of groups $\mathcal{K}$ if every algebraic isomorphism from the $S$-ring in question to an $S$-ring over a group from $\mathcal{K}$ is induced by a combinatorial isomorphism. A finite group $G$ is said to be separable with respect to $\mathcal{K}$ if every $S$-ring over $G$ is separable with respect to $\mathcal{K}$. We prove that every abelian group $G$ of order $9p$, where $p$ is a prime, is separable with respect to the class of all finite abelian groups. Modulo previously obtained results, this completes a classific…
Suppose that all hyperbolic groups are residually finite. The following statements follow: In relatively hyperbolic groups with peripheral structures consisting of finitely generated nilpotent subgroups, quasiconvex subgroups are separable; Geometrically finite subgroups of non-uniform lattices in rank one symmetric spaces are separable; Kleinian groups are subgroup separable. We also show that LERF for finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds would follow from LERF for closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds. The method is to reduce, via combination and filling theorems, the separability of a quasiconvex s…
We obtain a number of results regarding freeness, quasiconvexity and separability for subgroups of Coxeter groups, Artin groups and one-relator groups with torsion.
For a group $G$ and a subgroup $H$ of $G$ this article discusses the normalizer of $H$ in the units of a group ring $RG$. We prove that $H$ is only normalized by the `obvious' units, namely products of elements of $G$ normalizing $H$ and units of $RG$ centralizing $H$, provided $H$ is cyclic. Moreover we show that the normalizers of all subgroups of certain nilpotent and metacyclic groups in the corresponding group rings are as small as possible. These classes contain all dihedral groups, all finite nilpotent groups and all finite groups with all Sylow subgroups being cyclic.
Let V(KG) be the normalized group of units of the group ring KG of a non-Dedekind group G with nontrivial torsion part t(G) over the integral domain K. We give a simple method for constructing free objects in V(KG).In particular, we show that V(KG) always contains the free product C_n*C_n of two finite cyclic groups. We construct examples of subgroups in V(KG), which are either cyclic extensions of a non-abelian free group or C_n*C_n.
An $S$-ring (Schur ring) is called separable with respect to a class of $S$-rings $\mathcal{K}$ if it is determined up to isomorphism in $\mathcal{K}$ only by the tensor of its structure constants. An abelian group is said to be separable if every $S$-ring over this group is separable with respect to the class of $S$-rings over abelian groups. Let $C_n$ be a cyclic group of order $n$ and $G$ be a noncylic abelian $p$-group. From the previously obtained results it follows that if $G$ is separable then $G$ is isomorphic to $C_p\times C_{p^k}$ or $C_p\times C_p\times C_{p^k}$, where $p\in \{2,3\}…
We use wreath products to provide criteria for a group to be conjugacy separable or omnipotent. These criteria are in terms of virtual retractions onto cyclic subgroups. We give two applications: a straightforward topological proof of the theorem of Stebe that infinite-order elements of Fuchsian groups (of the first type) are conjugacy distinguished, and a proof that surface groups are omnipotent.
The connections between the properties of associative rings that are Lie-solvable (Engel, n-Engel, locally finite, respectively) and the properties of their adjoin subgroups are investigated.
Let $D$ be a division ring and $K$ a subfield of $D$ which is not necessarily contained in the center $F$ of $D$. In this paper, we study the structure of $D$ under the condition of left algebraicity of certain subsets of $D$ over $K$. Among results, it is proved that if $D^*$ contains a noncentral normal subgroup which is left algebraic over $K$ of bounded degree $d$, then $[D:F]\le d^2$. In case $K=F$, the obtained results show that if either all additive commutators or all multiplicative commutators with respect to a noncentral subnormal subgroup of $D^*$ are algebraic of bounded degree $d$…
