In the recent years, there has been a growing interest in droplet-based (digital) microfluidics for which, reliable means of droplet manipulation are required. In this study we demonstrate thermal actuation of droplets on liquid platforms, which is ideal for biochemical microsystems and lab-on-chip applications because droplets can be transported with high speed, good control and minimal thermal loading as compared to using conventional solid substrates. In addition, other disadvantages of using solid surfaces such as evaporation, contamination, pinning, hysteresis and irreversibility of droplet motion are avoided.
Based on the theoretical development and measurements, a silicon-based droplet transportation platform was developed with embedded Titanium micro heaters. A shallow liquid pool of inert liquid (FC-43) served as the carrier liquid. Heaters were interfaced with control electronics and driven through a computer graphical user interface. By creating appropriate spatio-temporal thermal gradient maps, transport of droplets on predetermined pathways was successfully demonstrated with high level of robustness, speed and reliability.
The video shows normal imaging of droplet manipulation accompanied by the corresponding infrared thermal imaging showing the spatio-temporal temperature maps and the outline of the drop as it moves towards hot spots.
Electrowetting has a potential to realize stand-alone point-of-care (POC) devices. Here we report droplet-migration characteristics on oil-infused electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) substrates. We prepare sparse micropillars to retain the oil layer in order to exploit the layer as a lubricating film. A physical model of the droplet velocity is developed, and effects of the lubrication, the oil viscosity, the droplet volume, and the thickness of solid and liquid dielectric layers are discussed. It is found that the droplet velocity is scaled as square of E, which differs from a relationship of…
This study aims to build a theoretical model to describe the ignition process of spherical spray flame laden with fuel droplets under overall fuel-lean condition. Two characteristic fronts are introduced to reveal where the evaporation starts and ends in the ignition process. The results demonstrate that the flame has been strengthened with extra fuel droplet adding while the minimum ignition energy (MIE) is decreased. The evolution of the two evaporation fronts in the flame kernel and propagating branches has also be revealed coupled with the evaporation zone length.
In this paper, we investigate the dynamics of spherical droplets in the presence of a source-sink pair flow field. The dynamics of the droplets is governed by the Maxey-Riley equation with Basset-Boussinesq history term neglected. We find that, in the absence of gravity, there are two distinct behaviours for the droplets: small droplets cannot go further than a specific distance, which we determine analytically, from the source before getting pulled into the sink. Larger droplets can travel further from the source before getting pulled into the sink by virtue of their larger inertia, and their…
Interfacial instability would be aroused on a spherical liquid droplet when it is subject to external vertical vibration. In this paper, a linear analysis was conducted on this instability problem. The polar-angle dependent acceleration in the spherical coordinate is strongly coupled with the temporal and spatial component of the surface deformation displacement, which gives a recursion equation that implicitly expresses the dispersion relation between the growth rate and spherical mode numbers. The unstable regions (or unstable tongues) for the inviscid fluids considering latitudinal mode (lo…
Droplet impact on solid surfaces is a fluid phenomenon widely involved in additive manufacturing, heat management, and coating, in which the ability to exert control over the impact dynamics and duration is critical. While past studies have established a comprehensive understanding of the impact on flat substrates, what we know about the impact dynamics on curved solid surfaces is still limited. This work aims to elucidate the physics of droplet impact on spherical surfaces with different Weber numbers ($We$), radii ($R_s$), and surface wettability ($θ^{eq}$) using a combination of axisymmetri…
Propagation of weakly stretched spherical flames in partially pre-vaporized fuel sprays is theoretically investigated in this work. A general theory is developed to describe flame propagation speed, flame temperature, droplet evaporation onset and completion locations. The influences of liquid fuel and gas mixture properties on spherical spray flame propagation are studied. The results indicate that the spray flame propagation speed is enhanced with increased droplet mass loading and/or evaporation heat exchange coefficient (or evaporation rate). Opposite trends are found when the latent heat …
The breakup of a spherical droplet in a decaying homogeneous isotropic turbulence is studied by solving the Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes equations, using the discrete unified gas kinetic scheme combined with the free-energy-based phase-field model. We focus on the combined effects of turbulence and surface tension on the breakup process by assuming that the two fluid phases have the same density and same viscosity. The key physical parameters of the system include the volume fraction (6.54%), the initial Weber number (21.7), and the initial Taylor microscale Reynolds number (58). Three distinct…
Introducing controlled fluid motion inside a droplet turns out to be of outstanding scientific importance. In this work, we suggest a new method of flow manipulation inside a sessile droplet by simply deploying a static charge produced by triboelectric effect. This is physically actuated by charge transfer between the two lateral electrodes within which the droplet is entrained, triggering a strong ionized air current. The flow inside the droplet is generated due to the shear exerted at the liquid-air interface by the charged induced ionized air flow around the droplet, a paradigm that has hit…
The dynamic behavior of a partially wetting polymer droplet driven over a nanostructured interface is studied using molecular dynamics simulations. We consider the bead-spring model to represent a polymeric liquid that partially wets a rough surface composed of a periodic array of spherical particles. It is shown that at sufficiently small values of the external force, the droplet remains pinned at the particles' surface, while above the threshold, its motion consists of alternating periods of pinning and rapid displacements between neighboring particles. The latter process involves large peri…
Manipulation of micro/nano particles has been well studied and demonstrated by optical, electromagnetic, and acoustic approaches, or their combinations. Manipulation of internal structure of droplet/particle is rarely explored and remains challenging due to its complicated nature. Here we demonstrated the manipulation of internal structure of disk-in-sphere endoskeletal droplets using acoustic wave for the first time. We developed a model to investigate the physical mechanisms behind this novel phenomenon. Theoretical analysis of the acoustic interactions indicated that these assembly dynamics…
This letter presents a scaling theory of the coalescence of two viscous spherical droplets. An initial value problem was formulated and analytically solved for the evolution of the radius of a liquid neck formed upon droplet coalescence. Two asymptotic solutions of the initial value problem reproduce the well-known scaling relations in the viscous and inertial regimes. The viscous-to-inertial crossover experimentally observed by Paulsen et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 114501 (2011)] manifests in the theory, and their fitting relation, which shows collapse of data of different viscosities onto a …
This letter presents a theory on the coalescence of two spherical liquid droplets that are initially stationary. The evolution of the radius of a liquid neck formed upon coalescence was formulated as an initial value problem and then solved to yield an exact solution without free parameters, with its two asymptotic approximations reproducing the well-known scaling relations in the viscous and inertial regimes. The viscous-to-inertial crossover observed by Paulsen et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 114501 (2011)] is also recovered by the theory, rendering the collapse of data of different viscositie…
We demonstrate droplet manipulation using electric signals to induce the liquid to wet or dewet on a hydrophilic conductive substrate in the air without adding layers. In this phenomenon, the contact angle changes more than 15° or -20° by using the ionic surfactant mediated droplets, with only \pm3 volts of the actuation voltage.
Manipulating micro-scale object plays paramount roles in a wide range of fundamental researches and applications. At micro-scale, various methods have been developed in the past decades, including optical, electric, magnetic, aerodynamic and acoustic methods. However, these non-contact forces are susceptible to external disturbance, and so finding a way to make micro-scale object manipulation immune to external perturbations is challenging and remains elusive. Here we demonstrate a method based on new trapping mechanism to manipulate micro-scale object in a gas flow at ambient conditions. We f…
The present work investigates forced ignition and oscillating propagation of spray flame in a mixture of fine ethanol droplets and air. Eulerian-Eulerian method with two-way coupling is used and detailed chemical mechanism is considered. Different droplet diameters and liquid fuel equivalence ratios (ER) are studied. The evaporation completion front (ECF) is defined to study the interactions between the evaporation zone and flame front. The gas composition at the flame front is quantified through an effective ER. The results show that the kernel trajectory is considerably affected by droplet s…
Drops deposited on an evaporating liquid bath can be maintained in an inverse Leidenfrost state by the vapor emanating from the bath, making them levitate and hover almost without friction. These perfectly non-wetting droplets create a depression in the liquid interface that sustains their weight, which generates repellent forces when they approach a meniscus rising against a wall. Here, we study this reflection in detail, and show that frictionless Leidenfrost drops are a simple and efficient tool to probe the shape of an unknown interface. We then use the menisci to control the motion of the…
In recent decades novel solid substrates have been designed which change their wettability in response to light or an electrostatic field. Here, we investigate a droplet on substrates with oscillating uniform wettability by varying minimium and maximum contact angles and frequency. To simulate this situation, we use our previous work [Grawitter and Stark, Soft Matter 17, 2454 (2021)], where we implemented the boundary element method in combination with the Cox-Voinov law for the contact-line velocity, to determine the fluid flow inside a droplet. After a transient regime the droplet performs s…
Droplet-droplet interactions is ubiquitous in various applications ranging from medical diagnostics to enhancing and optimizing liquid jet propulsion. We employ an experimental technique where the laser pulse interacts with a micron-sized droplet and causes optical breakdown. The synergy of a nanosecond laser pulse and an isolated spherical droplet is accurately controlled and manipulated to influence the deformation and fragmentation of an array of droplets. We elucidate how the fluid dynamic response (such as drop-drop and shock-drop interactions) of an arrangement of droplets can be regulat…
A filament of liquid is usually unstable and breaks up into small droplets, while a filament of polymer solution is known to be quite stable against such instability, and they form a stable configuration of filament connecting two spherical droplets. If the droplets are fixed in space, the liquid flows from the filament region to the droplet region to reduce the surface energy and the filament gets thinner. If the whole liquid is placed in another viscous fluid, the droplets approach each other, and the filament can get thicker. Here we study the dynamics of such system. We derive time evoluti…
Irrotational ow of a spherical thin liquid layer surrounding a rigid core is described using the defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation. Accordingly, azimuthal moving nonlinear waves are modeled by periodic dark solitons expressed by elliptic functions. In the quantum regime the algebraic Bethe ansatz is used in order to capture the energy levels of such motions, which we expect to be relevant for the dynamics of the nuclear clusters in deformed heavy nuclei surface modeled by quantum liquid drops. In order to validate the model we match our theoretical energy spectra with experimental resu…
