Using the framework of random walks in random scenery, Cohen and Samorodnitsky (2006) introduced a family of symmetric $α$-stable motions called local time fractional stable motions. When $α=2$, these processes are precisely fractional Brownian motions with $1/2<H<1$. Motivated by random walks in alternating scenery, we find a "complementary" family of symmetric $α$-stable motions which we call indicator fractional stable motions. These processes are complementary to local time fractional stable motions in that when $α=2$, one gets fractional Brownian motions with $0<H<1/2$.
Stable non-Gaussian self-similar mixed moving averages can be decomposed into several components. Two of these are the periodic and cyclic fractional stable motions which are the subject of this study. We focus on the structure of their integral representations and show that the periodic fractional stable motions have, in fact, a canonical representation. We study several examples and discuss questions of uniqueness, namely how to determine whether two given integral representations of periodic or cyclic fractional stable motions give rise to the same process.
Using lattice approximations of Euclidean space, we develop a way to approximate stable processes that are represented by stochastic integrals over Euclidean space. Via a stable version of the Lindeberg-Feller Theorem we show that the approximations weakly converge as the mesh-size goes to zero. As an application, we improve upon previous approximation schemes for integrals with respect to linear fractional stable motions.
Expressions are given for the truncated fractional moments $E X_+^p$ of a general stable law. These involve families of special functions that arose out of the study of multivariate stable densities and probabilities. As a particular case, an expression is given for $E(X-a)_+$ when $α> 1$.
In this paper, we simulate sample paths of a class of symmetric $α$-stable processes using their series expression. We will develop a result in the approximation of shot-noise series. And finally, we will get a convergence rate for the approximation.
Meerschaert and Sabzikar [12], [13] introduced tempered fractional Brownian/stable motion (TFBM/TFSM) by including an exponential tempering factor in the moving average representation of FBM/FSM. The present paper discusses another tempered version of FBM/FSM, termed tempered fractional Brownian/stable motion of second kind (TFBM II/TFSM II).We prove that TFBM/TFSM and TFBM II/TFSM II are different processes. Particularly, large time properties of TFBM II/TFSM II are similar to those of FBM/FSM and are in deep contrast to large time properties of TFBM/TFSM.
This work defines two classes of processes, that we term {\it tempered fractional multistable motion} and {\it tempered multifractional stable motion}. They are extensions of fractional multistable motion and multifractional stable motion, respectively, obtained by adding an exponential tempering to the integrands. We investigate certain basic features of these processes, including scaling property, tail probabilities, absolute moment, sample path properties, pointwise Hölder exponent, Hölder continuity of quasi norm, (strong) localisability and semi-long-range dependence structure. These proc…
This paper derives the asymptotic behavior of $$\mathbb{P} \{ \int\limits_0^\infty \mathbb{I}\Big(B_H(s)-c_1s>q_1u, B_H(s)-c_2s>q_2u\Big)ds>T_u\},\quad u \to \infty,$$ where $B_H$ is a fractional Brownian motion, $c_1,c_2,q_1,q_2>0,\ H \in (0,1), \ T_u \ge 0$ is a measurable function and $\mathbb{I}(\cdot)$ is the indicator function.
In this paper, we define a new and broad family of vector-valued random fields called tempered operator fractional operator-stable random fields (TRF, for short). TRF is typically non-Gaussian and generalizes tempered fractional stable stochastic processes. TRF comprises moving average and harmonizable-type subclasses that are constructed by tempering (matrix-) homogeneous, matrix-valued kernels in time- and Fourier-domain stochastic integrals with respect to vector-valued, strictly operator-stable random measures. We establish the existence and fundamental properties of TRF. Assuming both Gau…
In this work, we investigate the fine regularity of Lévy processes using the 2-microlocal formalism. This framework allows us to refine the multifractal spectrum determined by Jaffard and, in addition, study the oscillating singularities of Lévy processes. The fractal structure of the latter is proved to be more complex than the classic multifractal spectrum and is determined in the case of alpha-stable processes. As a consequence of these fine results and the properties of the 2-microlocal frontier, we are also able to completely characterise the multifractal nature of the linear fractional s…
Generalizing both Substable FSMs and Indicator FSMs, we introduce alpha-stabilized subordination, a procedure which produces new FSMs (H-sssi symmetric stable processes) from old ones. We extend these processes to isotropic stable fields which have stationary increments in the strong sense, i.e., processes which are invariant under Euclidean rigid motions of the multi-dimensional time parameter. We also prove a Stable Central Limit Theorem which provides an intuitive picture of alpha-stabilized subordination. Finally we show that alpha-stabilized subordination of Linear FSMs produces null-cons…
In this paper we study pseudo-processes related to odd-order heat-type equations composed with Lévy stable subordinators. The aim of the article is twofold. We first show that the pseudo-density of the subordinated pseudo-process can be represented as an expectation of damped oscillations with generalized gamma distributed parameters. This stochastic representation also arises as the solution to a fractional diffusion equation, involving a higher-order Riesz-Feller operator, which generalizes the odd-order heat-type equation. We then prove that, if the stable subordinator has a suitable expone…
It is classical to approximate the distribution of fractional Brownian motion by a renormalized sum $ S_n $ of dependent Gaussian random variables. In this paper we consider such a walk $ Z_n $ that collects random rewards $ ξ_j $ for $ j \in \mathbb Z,$ when the ceiling of the walk $ S_n $ is located at $ j.$ The random reward (or scenery) $ ξ_j $ is independent of the walk and with heavy tail. We show the convergence of the sum of independent copies of $ Z_n$ suitably renormalized to a stable motion with integral representation, whose kernel is the local time of a fractional Brownian motion …
For a random walk defined for a doubly infinite sequence of times, we let the time parameter itself be an integer-valued process, and call the orginal process a random walk at random time. We find the scaling limit which generalizes the so-called iterated Brownian motion. Khoshnevisan and Lewis [Ann. Appl. Probab. 9 (1999) 629-667] suggested "the existence of a form of measure-theoretic duality" between iterated Brownian motion and a Brownian motion in random scenery. We show that a random walk at random time can be considered a random walk in "alternating" scenery, thus hinting at a mechanism…
Let $Z^H= \{Z^H(t), t \in \R^N\}$ be a real-valued $N$-parameter harmonizable fractional stable sheet with index $H = (H_1, \ldots, H_N) \in (0, 1)^N$. We establish a random wavelet series expansion for $Z^H$ which is almost surely convergent in all the Hölder spaces $C^γ([-M,M]^N)$, where $M>0$ and $γ\in (0, \min\{H_1,\ldots, H_N\})$ are arbitrary. One of the main ingredients for proving the latter result is the LePage representation for a rotationally invariant stable random measure. Also, let $X=\{X(t), t \in \R^N\}$ be an $\R^d$-valued harmonizable fractional stable sheet whose components …
We define and study fractional versions of the well-known Gamma subordinator $Γ:=\{Γ(t),$ $t\geq 0\},$ which are obtained by time-changing $% Γ$ by means of an independent stable subordinator or its inverse. Their densities are proved to satisfy differential equations expressed in terms of fractional versions of the shift operator (with fractional parameter greater or less than one, in the two cases). As a consequence, the fractional generalization of some Gamma subordinated processes (i.e. the Variance Gamma, the Geometric Stable and the Negative Binomial) are introduced and the corresponding…
We are interested in the differential equations satisfied by the density of the Geometric Stable processes $\mathcal{G}_α^β=\left\{\mathcal{G}_α^β(t);t\geq 0\right\} $, with stability \ index $% α\in (0,2]$ and asymmetry parameter $β\in \lbrack -1,1]$, both in the univariate and in the multivariate cases. We resort to their representation as compositions of stable processes with an independent Gamma subordinator. As a preliminary result, we prove that the latter is governed by a differential equation expressed by means of the shift operator. As a consequence, we obtain the space-fractional equ…
We describe a new class of self-similar symmetric $α$-stable processes with stationary increments arising as a large time scale limit in a situation where many users are earning random rewards or incurring random costs. The resulting models are different from the ones studied earlier both in their memory properties and smoothness of the sample paths.
Self-similar stable mixed moving average processes can be related to nonsingular flows through their minimal representations. Self-similar stable mixed moving averages related to dissipative flows have been studied, as well as processes associated with identity flows which are the simplest type of conservative flows. The focus here is on self-similar stable mixed moving averages related to periodic and cyclic flows. Periodic flows are conservative flows such that each point in the space comes back to its initial position in finite time, either positive or null. The flow is cyclic if the return…
Let R be a symmetric a-stable Riemann-Liouville process with Hurst parameter H > 0. Consider ||.|| a translation invariant, b-self-similar, and p-pseudo-additive functional semi-norm. We show that if H > (b + 1/p) and c = (H - b - 1/p), then x log P [ log ||R|| < c log x ] -> - k < 0, when x -> 0, with k finite in the Gaussian case a = 2. If a < 2, we prove that k is finite when R is continuous and H > (b + 1/p + 1/a). We also show that under the above assumptions, x log P [ log ||X|| < c log x ] -> - k < 0 when x -> 0, where k is finite and X is the linear a-stable fractional motion with Hurs…
We deal with some extensions of the space-fractional diffusion equation, which is satisfied by the density of a stable process (see Mainardi, Luchko, Pagnini (2001)): the first equation considered here is obtained by adding an exponential differential operator expressed in terms of the Riesz-Feller derivative. We prove that this produces a random additional term in the time-argument of the corresponding stable process, which is represented by the so-called Poisson process with drift. Analogously, if we add, to the space-fractional diffusion equation, a logarithmic differential operator involvi…
A time-changed fractional mixed fractional Brownian motion by inverse alpha stable subordinator with index alpha in (0, 1) is an iterated process L constructed as the superposition of fractional mixed fractional Brownian motion N(a, b) and an independent inverse α-stable subordinator Talpha. In this paper we prove that the process LT alpha(a, b) is of long range dependence property under a smooth condition on the Hirsh index H1 and H2. We deduce that the fractional mixed fractional Brownian motion has long range dependence for every H1 < H2.
A definition for elliptical tempered stable distribution, based on the characteristic function, have been explained which involve a unique spectral measure. This definition provides a framework for creating a connection between infinite divisible distribution, and particularly elliptical tempered stable distribution, with fractional calculus. Finally, some analytical approximations for the probability density function of tempered infinite divisible distribution, which elliptical tempered stable distributions are a subclass of them, are considered.
Motivated by applications to insurance mathematics, we prove some heavy-traffic limit theorems for processes which encompass the fractionally differentiated random walk as well as some FARIMA processes, when the innovations are in the domain of attraction of a nonGaussian stable distribution.

This paper proves an analogue of a result of Banuelos and Sa Barreto on the asymptotic expansion for the trace of Schrodinger operators on $\R^d$ when the Laplacian $Δ$, which is the generator of the Brownian motion, is replaced by the non-local integral operator $Δ^{α/2}$, $0<α<2$, which is the generator of the symmetric stable process of order $α$. These results also extend recent results of Banuelos and Yildirim where the first two coefficients for $Δ^{α/2}$ are computed. Some extensions to Schrodinger operators arising from relativistic stable and mixed stable processes are obtained.
In this paper we study the asymptotic theory for quadratic variation of a harmonizable fractional $\al$-stable process. We show a law of large numbers with a non-ergodic limit and obtain weak convergence towards a Lévy-driven Rosenblatt random variable when the Hurst parameter satisfies $H\in (1/2,1)$ and $\al(1-H)<1/2$. This result complements the asymptotic theory for fractional stable processes investigated in e.g. \cite{BHP19,BLP17,BP17,BPT20,LP18,MOP20}.
Consider a sequence X_k=\sum_{j=0}^{\infty}c_jξ_{k-j}, k\geq 1, where c_j, j\geq 0, is a sequence of constants and ξ_j, -\infty <j<\infty, is a sequence of independent identically distributed (i.i.d.) random variables (r.v.s) belonging to the domain of attraction of a strictly stable law with index 0<α\leq 2. Let S_k=\sum_{j=1}^kX_j. Under suitable conditions on the constants c_j it is known that for a suitable normalizing constant γ_n, the partial sum process γ_n^{-1}S_{[nt]} converges in distribution to a linear fractional stable motion (indexed by αand H, 0<H<1). A fractional ARIMA process …
Zolotarev proved a duality result that relates stable densities with different indices. In this paper, we show how Zolotarev duality leads to some interesting results on fractional diffusion. Fractional diffusion equations employ fractional derivatives in place of the usual integer order derivatives. They govern scaling limits of random walk models, with power law jumps leading to fractional derivatives in space, and power law waiting times between the jumps leading to fractional derivatives in time. The limit process is a stable Lévy motion that models the jumps, subordinated to an inverse st…
The fractional Poisson process is a renewal process with Mittag-Leffler waiting times. Its distributions solve a time-fractional analogue of the Kolmogorov forward equation for a Poisson process. This paper shows that a traditional Poisson process, with the time variable replaced by an independent inverse stable subordinator, is also a fractional Poisson process. This result unifies the two main approaches in the stochastic theory of time-fractional diffusion equations. The equivalence extends to a broad class of renewal processes that include models for tempered fractional diffusion, and dist…
In this work we characterize the local asymptotic self-similarity of harmonizable fractional Lévy motions in the heavy tailed case. The corresponding tangent process is shown to be the harmonizable fractional stable motion. In addition, we provide sufficient conditions for existence of harmonizable fractional Lévy motions.
Based on the popular Caputo fractional derivative of order $β$ in $(0,1)$, we define the censored fractional derivative on the positive half-line $\mathbb R_+$. This derivative proves to be the Feller generator of the censored (or resurrected) decreasing $β$-stable process in $\mathbb R_+$. We provide a series representation for the inverse of this censored fractional derivative, which we use to study general censored initial value problems. We are then able to prove that this censored process hits the boundary in a finite time $τ_\infty$, whose expectation is proportional to that of the first…
In this paper we consider the general fractional equation \sum_{j=1}^m λ_j \frac{\partial^{ν_j}}{\partial t^{ν_j}} w(x_1,..., x_n ; t) = -c^2 (-Δ)^βw(x_1,..., x_n ; t), for ν_j \in (0,1], β\in (0,1] with initial condition w(x_1,..., x_n ; 0)= \prod_{j=1}^n δ(x_j). The solution of the Cauchy problem above coincides with the distribution of the n-dimensional process \bm{S}_n^{2β} \mathcal{L} c^2 {L}^{ν_1,..., ν_m} (t) \r, t>0, where \bm{S}_n^{2β} is an isotropic stable process independent from {L}^{ν_1,..., ν_m}(t) which is the inverse of {H}^{ν_1,..., ν_m} (t) = \sum_{j=1}^m λ_j^{1/ν_j} H^{ν_j}…
The linear fractional stable motion generalizes two prominent classes of stochastic processes, namely stable Lévy processes, and fractional Brownian motion. For this reason it may be regarded as a basic building block for continuous time models. We study a stylized model consisting of a superposition of independent linear fractional stable motions and our focus is on parameter estimation of the model. Applying an estimating equations approach, we construct estimators for the whole set of parameters and derive their asymptotic normality in a high-frequency regime. The conditions for consistency…
In this paper, we prove a new generalized Mikhlin multiplier theorem whose conditions are given with respect to fractional derivatives in integral forms with two different integration intervals. We also discuss the connection between fractional derivatives and stable processes and prove a version of Mikhlin theorem under a condition given in terms of the infinitesimal generator of symmetric stable process. The classical Mikhlin theorem is shown to be a corollary of this new generalized version in this paper.
A new information-theoretic approach to the central limit theorem for stable laws is presented. The main novelty is the concept of relative fractional Fisher information, which shares most of the properties of the classical one, included Blachman-Stam type inequalities. These inequalities relate the fractional Fisher information of the sum of $n$ independent random variables to the information contained in sums over subsets containing $n-1$ of the random variables. As a consequence, a simple proof of the monotonicity of the relative fractional Fisher information in central limit theorems for s…
Almost sixty years ago Zolotarev proved a duality result which relates an $α$-stable density for $α\in(1,2)$ to the density of a $\frac1α$-stable distribution on the positive real line. In recent years Zolotarev duality was the key to show space-time duality for fractional diffusions stating that certain heat-type fractional equations with a fractional derivative of order $α$ in space are equivalent to corresponding time-fractional differential equations of order $\frac1α$. We review on this space-time duality and take it as a recipe for a generalization from the stable to the semistable situa…
The paper investigates the rich class of Generalized Tempered Stable distribution, an alternative to Normal distribution and the $α$-Stable distribution for modelling asset return and many physical and economic systems. Firstly, we explore some important properties of the Generalized Tempered Stable (GTS) distribution. The theoretical tools developed are used to perform empirical analysis. The GTS distribution is fitted using S&P 500, SPY ETF and Bitcoin BTC. The Fractional Fourier Transform (FRFT) technique evaluates the probability density function and its derivatives in the maximum likeliho…
The behaviour of solutions for a non-linear diffusion problem is studied. A subordination principle is applied to obtain the variation of parameters formula in the sense of Volterra equations, which leads to the integral representation of a solution in terms of the fundamental solutions. This representation, the so-called mild solution, is used to investigate some properties about continuity and non-negativeness of solutions as well as to prove a Fujita type blow-up result. Fujita's critical exponent is established in terms of the parameters of the stable non-Gaussian process and a result for …
The fractional Poisson process and the Wright process (as discretization of the stable subordinator) along with their diffusion limits play eminent roles in theory and simulation of fractional diffusion processes. Here we have analyzed these two processes, concretely the corresponding counting number and Erlang processes, the latter being the processes inverse to the former. Furthermore we have obtained the diffusion limits of all these processes by well-scaled refinement of waiting times and jumps
This paper explicitly computes the transition densities of a spectrally negative stable process with index greater than one, reflected at its infimum. First we derive the forward equation using the theory of sun-dual semigroups. The resulting forward equation is a boundary value problem on the positive half-line that involves a negative Riemann-Liouville fractional derivative in space, and a fractional reflecting boundary condition at the origin. Then we apply numerical methods to explicitly compute the transition density of this space-inhomogeneous Markov process, for any starting point, to a…
A time-changed mixed fractional Brownian motion is an iterated process constructed as the superposition of mixed fractional Brownian motion and other process. In this paper we consider mixed fractional Brownian motion of parameters a, b and H\in(0, 1) time-changed by two processes, gamma and tempered stable subordinators. We present their main properties paying main attention to the long range dependence. We deduce that the fractional Brownian motion time-changed by gamma and tempered stable subordinators has long range dependence property for all H\in(0, 1).
This chapter is an attempt to present a mathematical theory of compound fractional Poisson processes. The chapter begins with the characterization of a well-known Lévy process: The compound Poisson process. The semi-Markov extension of the compound Poisson process naturally leads to the compound fractional Poisson process, where the Poisson counting process is replaced by the Mittag-Leffler counting process also known as fractional Poisson process. This process is no longer Markovian and Lévy. However, several analytical results are available and some of them are discussed here. The functional…
A subdiffusion problem in which the diffusion term is related to a stable stochastic process is introduced. Linear models of these systems have been studied in a general way, but non-linear models require a more specific analysis. The model presented in this work corresponds to a non-linear evolution equation with fractional time derivative and a pseudo-differential operator acting on the spatial variable. This type of equations has a couple of fundamental solutions, whose estimates for the L_p-norm are found to obtain three main results concerning mild and global solutions. The existence and …
