A recently developed Shastry's formalism for energy transport is used to analyze the temporal and spatial behaviors of the energy and heat transport in metals under delta function excitation at the surface. Comparison with Cattaneo's model is performed. Both models show the transition between nonthermal (ballistic) and thermal (ballistic-diffusive) regimes. Furthermore, because the new model considers the discrete character of the lattice, it highlights some new phenomena such as damped oscillations in the energy transport both in time and space. The energy relaxation of the conduction band electrons in metals is considered to be governed by the electron-phonon scattering, and the scattering time is taken to be averaged over the Fermi surface. Using the new formalism, one can quantify the transfer from nonthermal modes to thermal ones as energy propagates in the material and it is transformed into heat. While the thermal contribution shows a wave-front and an almost exponentially decaying behavior with time, the nonthermal part shows a wave-front and a damped oscillating behavior. Two superimposed oscillations are identified; a fast oscillation that is attributed to the nonthermal nature of energy transport at very short time scales and a slow oscillation that describes the nature of the transition from the nonthermal regime to the thermal regime of energy transport.
The propagation of heat in the transient thermal grating geometry is studied based on phonon Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) in different phonon transport regimes. Our analytical and numerical results show that the phonon dispersion relation and temperature play a significant role in the emergence of heat wave. For the frequency-independent BTE, the heat wave appears as long as the phonon resistive scattering is not sufficient, while for the frequency-dependent BTE, the heat wave could disappear in the ballistic regime, depending on the grating period and temperature. We predict that the he…
Previous studies have predicted the failure of Fourier's law of thermal conduction due to the existence of wave like propagation of heat with finite propagation speed. This non-Fourier thermal transport phenomenon can appear in both the hydrodynamic and (quasi) ballistic regimes. Hence, it is not easy to clearly distinguish these two non-Fourier regimes only by this phenomenon. In this work, the transient heat propagation in homogeneous thermal system is studied based on the phonon Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) under the Callaway model. Given a quasi-one or quasi-two (three) dimensional s…
Violations of the second law of thermodynamics for small systems well below the thermodynamic limit has already been experimentally observed. However, the effects of such violations on experimentally measurable quantities have not been studied in detail. Here we report the effect of transient violations, i.e., spontaneous transfer of heat from cold to hot objects, on heat transfer in silicon nanowire by modeling the violations as a Poisson process. Our modeling and simulations show that it is increasingly difficult to cool down the nanoscale objects to the bath temperature, there is a transiti…
Developing simplified, but accurate, theoretical approaches to treat heat transport on all length and time scales is needed to further enable scientific insight and technology innovation. Using a simplified form of the Boltzmann transport equation (BTE), originally developed for electron transport, we demonstrate how ballistic phonon effects and finite-velocity propagation are easily and naturally captured. We show how this approach compares well to the phonon BTE, and readily handles a full phonon dispersion and energy-dependent mean-free-path. This study of transient heat transport shows i) …
Ballistic phonon effects, arising on length scales comparable to the mean-free-path, result in non-diffusive heat flow and alter the thermal properties of materials. Simple theoretical models that accurately capture non-diffusive transport physics are valuable for experimental analysis, technology design, and providing physical insight. In this work, we utilize and extend the McKelvey-Shockley (McK-S) flux method, a simple and accurate framework, to investigate ballistic effects in transient phonon transport submitted to a spatially sinusoidal heating profile, simulating a transient thermal gr…
We investigate the time-resolved quantum transport properties of phonons in arbitrary harmonic systems connected to phonon baths at different temperatures. We obtain a closed analytic expression of the time-dependent one-particle reduced density matrix by explicitly solving the equations of motion for the nonequilibrium Green's function. This is achieved through a well-controlled approximation of the frequency-dependent bath self-energy. Our result allows for exploring transient oscillations and relaxation times of local heat currents, and correctly reduces to an earlier known result in the st…
Transient dynamics of heat conduction in isotropic fractal metamaterials is investigated. By using the Laplacian operator in non-integer dimension, we analytically and numerically study the effect of fractal dimensionality on the evolution of the temperature profile, heat flux and excess energy under certain initial and boundary conditions. Particularly, with randomly distributed absorbing heat sinks in the fractal metamaterials, we obtain an anomalous non-exponential decay behavior of the heat pulse diffusion. and an optimal dimension for efficient heat absorption as a function of sink concen…
We analyze the short-time behavior of the heat and charge currents through nanoscale conductors exposed to a temperature gradient. To this end, we employ Luttinger's thermomechanical potential to simulate a sudden change of temperature at one end of the conductor. We find that the direction of the charge current through an impurity is initially opposite to the direction of the charge current in the steady-state limit. Furthermore, we investigate the transient propagation of energy and particle density driven by a temperature variation through a conducting nanowire. Interestingly, we find that …
Transient grating spectroscopy has emerged as a useful technique to study thermal phonon transport because of its ability to perform thermal measurements over length scales comparable to phonon mean free paths (MFPs). While several prior works have performed theoretical studies of quasiballistic heat conduction in transient grating, the analysis methods are either restricted to one spatial dimension or require phenomenological fitting parameters. Here, we analyze quasiballistic transport in a two-dimensional transient grating experiment, in which heat conduction can occur both in- and cross-pl…
In this paper, we investigate the strong coupling quantum thermodynamics of the hybrid quantum system far away from equilibrium. The strong coupling hybrid system consists of a cavity and a spin ensemble of the NV centers in diamond under external driving that has been realized experimentally. We apply the renormalization theory of quantum thermodynamics we developed recently to study the transient quantum heat and work in this hybrid system. We find that the dissipation and fluctuation dynamics of the system induce the transient quantum heat current which involve the significant non-Markovian…
The phonon Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) is widely utilized to study non-diffusive thermal transport. We find a solution of the BTE in the thin film transient thermal grating (TTG) experimental geometry by using a recently developed variational approach with a trial solution supplied by the Fourier heat conduction equation. We obtain an analytical expression for the thermal decay rate that shows excellent agreement with Monte Carlo simulations. We also obtain a closed form expression for the effective thermal conductivity that demonstrates the full material property and heat transfer geom…
Time-resolved pump-probe measurements were made at variable heat accumulation in Co/Pd superlattices. Heat accumulation increases the baseline temperature and decreases the equilibrium magnetization. Transient ultrafast demagnetization first develops with higher fluence in parallel with strong equilibrium thermal spin fluctuations. The ultrafast demagnetization is then gradually removed as the equilibrium temperature approaches the Curie temperature. The transient magnetization time-dependence is fit well with the spin-flip scattering model.
The wide-band limit is a commonly used approximation to analyze transport through nanoscale devices. In this work we investigate its applicability to the study of charge and heat transport through molecular break junctions exposed to voltage biases and temperature gradients. We find that while this approximation faithfully describes the long-time charge and heat transport, it fails to characterize the short-time behavior of the junction. In particular, we find that the charge current flowing through the device shows a discontinuity when a temperature gradient is applied, while the energy flow …
We explore nonequilibrium quantum heat transport in nonlinear bosonic systems in the presence of a non-Kerr-type interaction governed by hyper-parametric oscillation due to two-photon hopping between the two cavities. We estimate the thermodynamic response analytically by constructing the $su(2)$ algebra of the nonlinear Hamiltonian and predict that the system exhibits a negative excitation mode. Consequently, this specific form of interaction enables the cooling of the system by inducing a ground state transition when the number of particles increases, even though the interaction strength is …
We numerically investigate heating-and-cooling quenches taking place entirely in the non-ordered phase of the discrete Gross-Pitaevskii equation on a three-dimensional cubic lattice. In equilibrium, this system exhibits a U(1)-ordering phase transition at an energy density which is significantly lower than the minimum one during the quench. Yet, we observe that the post-quench relaxation is accompanied by a transient U(1) ordering, namely, the correlation length of U(1) fluctuations significantly exceeds its equilibrium pre-quench value. The longer and the stronger the heating stage of the que…
