Probabilities of various final states are determined numerically for a number of ß- decaying light atoms. In our evaluations of the final state probabilities we have used the highly accurate atomic wave functions constructed for each few-electron atom/ion. We also discuss an experimental possibility to observe negatively charged ions which form during the nuclear ß+ decays. High order corrections to the results obtained for ß+/- decays in few-electron atoms with the use of sudden approximation are considered.
The interaction of standard model's particles with the axionic Dark Matter field may generate oscillating nuclear electric dipole moments (EDMs), oscillating nuclear Schiff moments and oscillating nuclear magnetic quadrupole moments (MQMs) with a frequency corresponding to the axion's Compton frequency. Within an atom or a molecule an oscillating EDM, Schiff moment or MQM can drive transitions between atomic or molecular states. The excitation events can be detected, for example, via subsequent fluorescence or photoionization. Here we calculate the rates of such transitions. If the nucleus has…
Nuclear-structure effects often provide an irreducible theory error that prevents using precision atomic measurements to test fundamental theory. We apply newly developed effective field theory tools to Hydrogen atoms, and use them to show that (to the accuracy of present measurements) all nuclear finite-size effects (e.g. the charge radius, Friar moments, nuclear polarizabilities, recoil corrections, Zemach moments {\it etc.}) only enter into atomic energies through exactly two parameters, independent of any nuclear-modelling uncertainties. Since precise measurements are available for more th…
The interplay of x-ray ionization and atomic and nuclear degrees of freedom is investigated theoretically in the process of laser-assisted nuclear excitation by electron capture. In the resonant process of nuclear excitation by electron capture, an incident electron recombines into a vacancy in the atomic shell with simultaneous nuclear excitation. Here we investigate the specific scenario in which the free electron and the required atomic shell hole are generated by an x-ray free electron laser pulse. We develop a theoretical description based on the Feshbach projection operator formalism and…
Atomic electrons are sensitive to the properties of the nucleus they are bound to, such as nuclear mass, charge distribution, spin, magnetization distribution, or even excited level scheme. These nuclear parameters are reflected in the atomic transition energies. A very precise determination of atomic spectra may thus reveal information about the nucleus, otherwise hardly accessible via nuclear physics experiments. This work reviews theoretical and experimental aspects of the nuclear effects that can be identified in atomic structure data. An introduction to the theory of isotope shifts and hy…
We have considered a mechanism for inducing a time-reversal violating electric dipole moment (EDM) in atoms through the interaction of a nuclear EDM (d_N) with the hyperfine interaction, the "magnetic moment effect". We have derived the operator for this interaction and presented analytical formulas for the matrix elements between atomic states. Induced EDMs in the diamagnetic atoms 129Xe, 171Yb, 199Hg, 211Rn, and 225Ra have been calculated numerically. From the experimental limits on the atomic EDMs of 129Xe and 199Hg, we have placed the following constraints on the nuclear EDMs, |d_N(129Xe)|…
We use effective field theory to compute the influence of nuclear structure on precision calculations of atomic energy levels. As usual, the EFT's effective couplings correspond to the various nuclear properties (such as the charge radius, nuclear polarizabilities, Friar and Zemach moments {\it etc.}) that dominate its low-energy electromagnetic influence on its surroundings. By extending to spinning nuclei the arguments developed for spinless ones in {\tt arXiv:1708.09768}, we use the EFT to show -- to any fixed order in $Zα$ (where $Z$ is the atomic number and $α$ the fine-structure constant…
We identify a potential means to extract the $^{229g}$Th $\rightarrow$ $^{229m}$Th nuclear excitation energy from precision microwave spectroscopy of the $5F_{5/2,7/2}$ hyperfine manifolds in the ion $^{229g}$Th$^{3+}$. The hyperfine interaction mixes this ground fine structure doublet with states of the nuclear isomer, introducing small but observable shifts to the hyperfine sub-levels. We demonstrate how accurate atomic structure calculations may be combined with measurement of the hyperfine intervals to quantify the effects of this mixing. Further knowledge of the magnetic dipole decay rate…
Calculations of the magnetic hyperfine structure rely on the input of nuclear properties -- nuclear magnetic moments and nuclear magnetization distributions -- as well as quantum electrodynamic (QED) radiative corrections for high-accuracy evaluation in heavy atoms. The uncertainties associated with assumed values of these properties limit the accuracy of hyperfine calculations. For example, for the heavy alkali-metal atoms Cs and Fr, these uncertainties may amount collectively to almost 1\% or 2\%, respectively. In this paper we propose a method for removing the dependence of hyperfine struct…
A new mechanism of nuclear excitation via two-photon electron transitions (NETP) is proposed and studied theoretically. As a generic example, detailed calculations are performed for the $E1E1$ $1s2s\,^1S_0 \rightarrow 1s^2\,^1S_0$ two-photon decay of He-like $^{225}$Ac$^{87+}$ ion with the resonant excitation of the $3/2+$ nuclear state with the energy 40.09(5) keV. The probability for such a two-photon decay via the nuclear excitation is found to be $P_{\rm NETP} = 3.5 \times 10^{-9}$ and, thus, is comparable with other mechanisms, such as nuclear excitation by electron transition and by elec…
We have considered an effect of atomic electrons due to the electronic bridge process on the nuclear $^{229m}$Th -- $^{229g}$Th transition in ^{229}$Th$^{3+}$. Based on a recent experimental result we assumed the energy difference between the isomeric and the ground nuclear states to be equal to 7.6 eV. We have calculated the ratios of the electronic bridge process probability Gamma_EB to the probability of the nuclear radiative transition (Gamma_N) for the electronic 5f_5/2 --> 6d_3/2,6d_5/2,7s and the 7s --> 7p_1/2,7p_3/2 transitions and found Gamma_EB/Gamma_N ~ 0.01-0.1 for the former and G…
Electronic bridge excitation of the 76 eV nuclear isomeric state in $^{235}$U is shown to be strongly enhanced in the U$^{7+}$ ion, potentially enabling laser excitation of this nucleus. This is because the electronic spectrum has a very high level density near the nuclear transition energy that ensures the resonance condition is fulfilled. We present a quantum statistical theory based on many-body quantum chaos to demonstrate that typical values for the electronic factor increase the probability of electronic bridge in $^{235}$U$^{7+}$ by many orders of magnitude. We also extract the nuclear …
Approximate probabilities of formation of various atoms and ions in different bound states are determined for the exothermic nuclear $(n,{}^{6}$Li$;t,{}^{4}$He)-reaction of atomic lithium-6 with slow neutrons. In our calculations of the final state probabilities we have assumed that the incident lithium atom is in its ground (doublet) atomic ${}^2S(L = 0)-$state. It is straightforward to generalize our analysis to other bound states of the three-electron Li atom.
We have produced laser-cooled Wigner crystals of 229Th3+ in a linear Paul trap. The magnetic dipole (A) and electric quadrupole (B) hyperfine constants for four low-lying electronic levels and the relative isotope shifts with respect to 232Th3+ for three low-lying optical transitions are measured. Using the hyperfine B constants in conjunction with prior atomic structure calculations, a new value of the spectroscopic nuclear electric quadrupole moment Q = 3.11(16) eb is deduced. These results are a step towards optical excitation of the low-lying isomer level in the 229Th nucleus.
We consider the excitation of the nuclear transition ^{229g}Th - ^{229m}Th near 7.6 eV in singly ionized thorium via an electronic bridge process. The process relies on the excitation of the electron shell by two laser photons whose sum frequency is equal to the nuclear transition frequency. This scheme allows to determine the nuclear transition frequency with high accuracy. Based on calculations of the electronic level structure of Th^+ which combine the configuration-interaction method and many-body perturbation theory, we estimate that a nuclear excitation rate in the range of 10 s^{-1} can…
The resonant process of nuclear excitation by electron transition (NEET) in highly charged ions is investigated. In NEET, a bound electronic decay transition occurs with the simultaneous excitation of the nucleus, provided that the energies of the atomic and nuclear transition match. By varying the atomic charge state, the atomic transition energy can be tuned to a better match of the nuclear transition energy. We propose a new way to create the atomic hole in highly charged ions by dielectronic capture of a free electron. In order to derive the cross section for the three-step process compose…
We report on our calculations of differential hyperfine anomalies in the nuclear single-particle model for a number of atoms and ions of interest for studies of fundamental symmetries violations. Comparison with available experimental data allows one to discriminate between different nuclear magnetization models, and this data supports the use of the nuclear single-particle model over the commonly-used uniform ball model. Accurate modelling of the nuclear magnetization distribution is important for testing atomic theory through hyperfine comparisons. The magnetization distribution must be adeq…
On the basis of our general theoretical results developed previously in JETP 112, 246 (2011), we calculate the spatial distribution of atoms excited in a dense and cold atomic cloud by weak monochromatic light. We also study the atomic distribution over different Zeeman sublevels of the excited state in different parts of the cloud. The dependence of this distribution of atomic excitation on the density of the atomic ensemble and the frequency of external emission is investigated. We show that in the boundary regions of the cloud the orientation and alignment of atomic angular momentum takes p…
We study resonant optical excitations of strongly-interacting Rydberg states of atoms in the presence of relaxations. We employ the quantum stochastic (Monte Carlo) wavefunctions to simulate the dissipative dynamics of tens of atoms in two-dimensional lattices. We show that under typical experimental conditions involving slow Rydberg state decay and sizable relaxation of atomic coherences, on the time scale of several microseconds the atomic ensemble approaches a stationary state in which much of the quantum correlations between the atoms have decayed away. The steady state, however, exhibits …
The contribution of the CP violating three-gluon Weinberg operator, $\frac{1}{3!} w f^{abc} ε^{νραβ} G^a_{μν} G^b_{αβ} G^{c μ}_ρ$, to the atomic and nuclear EDMs is estimated using QCD sum rules. After calculating the transition matrix element between the pion and the vacuum through the Weinberg operator, we obtain the long-range CP-odd nuclear force by determining the isovector CP-odd pion-nucleon vertex, using chiral perturbation theory at NLO. The EDMs of $^{199}$Hg, $^{129}$Xe, $^{225}$Ra, $^2$H, and $^3$He are finally given including comprehensive uncertainty analysis. While the leading c…
Ordered atomic arrays trapped in the vicinity of nanoscale waveguides offer original light-matter interfaces, with applications to quantum information and quantum non-linear optics. Here, we study the decay dynamics of a single collective atomic excitation coupled to a waveguide in different configurations. The atoms are arranged as a linear array and only a segment of them is excited to a superradiant mode and emits light into the waveguide. Additional atomic chains placed on one or both sides play a passive role, either reflecting or absorbing this emission. We show that when varying the geo…
The direct and secondary nuclear excitation produced by an x-ray free electron laser when interacting with a solid-state nuclear target is investigated theoretically. When driven at the resonance energy, the x-ray free electron laser can produce direct photoexcitation. However, the dominant process in that interaction is the photoelectric effect producing a cold and very dense plasma in which also secondary processes such as nuclear excitation by electron capture may occur. We develop a realistic theoretical model to quantify the temporal dynamics of the plasma and the magnitude of the seconda…
The accuracy of atomic theory calculations limits the extraction of nuclear charge radii from isotope shift measurements of odd-proton nuclei. For Na isotopes, though precise spectroscopic measurements have existed since more than half a century, calculations by different methods offer a wide range of values. Here, we present accurate atomic calculations to reliably extract the Na charge radii. By combining experimental matter radii with nuclear coupled-cluster calculations based on nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon forces, we constrain the parameters obtained from the atomic calculations. The…
A state-of-the-art approach for calculating the finite nuclear size correction to atomic energy levels and the bound-electron $g$ factor is introduced and demonstrated for a series of highly charged hydrogen-like ions. Firstly, self-consistent mean-field calculations based on the Skyrme-type nuclear interaction are employed in order to produce a realistic nuclear proton distribution. In the second step, the obtained nuclear charge density is used to construct the potential of an extended nucleus, and the Dirac equation is solved numerically. The ambiguity in the choice of a Skyrme parametrizat…
Atom-waveguide interface mediates significant and long-range light-matter interactions through the guided modes. In this one-dimensional system, we theoretically investigate the excitation localization of multiple atomic excitations under strong position disorders. Deep in the localization side, we obtain the time evolutions of quantum correlations via Kubo cumulant expansions, which arise initially and become finite and leveled afterward, overtaking the ones without disorders. This indicates two distinct regimes in time: before the onset of excitation localization, the disorders engage the di…
