Correlated density matrix theory is generalized to investigate equilibrium properties of normal Fermi Liquids such as 3He and nuclear matter at nonzero temperatures. The results also generalize the Fermi-hypernetted-chain technique that is familiar from studies of the ground state of correlated fermions. By employing the concept of renormalized bosons and fermions the formal results are cast in a form that permits the direct evaluation of the statistical properties of the correlated liquid such as the entropy and the specific heat at constant volume among other quantities.
An extremely polarized mixture of an ultracold Fermi gas is expected to reduce to a Fermi polaron system, which consists of a single impurity immersed in the Fermi sea of majority atoms. By developing a many-body T -matrix theory, we investigate spectral properties of the polarized mixture in experimentally relevant regimes in which the system of finite impurity concentration at nonzero temperature is concerned. We explicitly demonstrate presence of polaron physics in the polarized limit and discuss effects of many polarons in an intermediate regime in a self-consistent manner. By analyzing th…
A topological crossover, associated with the collapse of the Fermi surface in strongly correlated Fermi systems, is examined. It is demonstrated that in these systems, the temperature domain where standard Fermi liquid results hold dramatically narrows, because the Landau regime is replaced by a classical one. The impact of the collapse of the Fermi surface on pairing correlations is analyzed. In the domain of the Lifshitz phase diagram where the Fermi surface collapses, splitting of the BCS superconducting phase transition into two different ones of the same symmetry is shown to occur.
A quantum phase transition in strongly correlated Fermi systems beyond the topological quantum critical point is studied within the Fermi liquid approach. The transition occurs between two topologically equivalent states, each with three sheets of the Fermi surface. One of these states possesses a quasiparticle halo in the quasiparticle momentum distribution $n(p)$, while the other, the hole pocket. The transition is found to be of the first order with respect to both the coupling constant $g$ and the temperature $T$. The phase diagram of the system in the vicinity of this transition is constr…
It has become increasingly feasible to use quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods to study correlated fermion systems for realistic Hamiltonians. We give a summary of these techniques targeted at researchers in the field of correlated electrons, focusing on the fundamentals, capabilities, and current status of this technique. The QMC methods often offer the highest accuracy solutions available for systems in the continuum, and, since they address the many-body problem directly, the simulations can be analyzed to obtain insight into the nature of correlated quantum behavior.
Basing on the density functional theory of fermion condensation, we analyze the non-Fermi liquid behavior of strongly correlated Fermi-systems such as heavy-fermion metals. When deriving equations for the effective mass of quasiparticles, we consider solids with a lattice and homogeneous systems. We show that the low-temperature thermodynamic and transport properties are formed by quasiparticles, while the dependence of the effective mass on temperature, number density, magnetic fields, etc gives rise to the non-Fermi liquid behavior. Our theoretical study of the heat capacity, magnetization, …
We formulate real-space dynamical mean-field theory within scattering theory. Thereby the Friedel sum rule is derived for interacting lattice fermions at zero temperature.
We investigate an effect that an ideal Lorenz number $L_{\rm i}$ of correlated metal shows peculiar Fermi surface dependence, which is caused by the onset of a particular channel of Umklapp scattering. We evaluate $L_{\rm i}$ for some simple models and transition metals, and note that $L_{\rm i}$ for Na$_x$CoO$_2$ decreases sensitively as $x$ approaches an Umklapp threshold around $x_c \simeq 0.6$.
The reason for the appearance of two distinct bands in the photoemission of the single CuO$_2$ plane Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$ near the Fermi level is discussed on the basis of the self-consistent solution of the two-dimensional t-J model.
The low-temperature kinetics of the strongly correlated electron liquid inhabiting a solid is analyzed. It is demonstrated that a softly damped branch of transverse zero sound emerges when several bands cross the Fermi surface simultaneously near a quantum critical point at which the density of states diverges. Suppression of the damping of this branch occurs due to a mechanism analogous to that affecting the phonon mode in solids at room temperature, giving rise to a classical regime of transport at extremely low temperatures in the strongly correlated Fermi system.
We study a model of strongly correlated spinless fermions on a kagome lattice at 1/3 filling, with interactions described by an extended Hubbard Hamiltonian. An effective Hamiltonian in the desired strong correlation regime is derived, from which the spectral functions are calculated by means of exact diagonalization techniques. We present our numerical results with a view to discussion of possible signatures of confinement/deconfinement of fractional charges.
We probe the superconducting gap in the zero temperature ground state of an attractively interacting spin-imbalanced two-dimensional Fermi gas with Diffusion Monte Carlo. A condensate fraction at nonzero pair momentum evidences a spatially non-uniform superconducting order parameter. Comparison with exact diagonalisation studies confirms that the nonzero condensate fraction across a range of nonzero fermion pair momenta is consistent with non-exclusive pairing between majority and minority fermions, an extension beyond FFLO theory.
This manuscript is based on the Summary and Overview talk given at the "The International Conference of Strongly Correlated Electronic Systems" (SCES '04), July 26-30, at Karlsruhe, Germany. After highlighting some of the principal new experimental developments in heavy fermions presented at the conference, I turn to two kinds of theoretical questions. (1) What is understood of the fermi-liquid state of the heavy fermions and what is not, but may reasonably well be understood by systematic calculations. (2) The profound issues raised by the observed correlations near the quantum critical point…
A number of recent experiments have highlighted a remarkable transformation of a large cuprate Fermi surface into small pockets in the underdoped region signalling a breakdown of a conventional Fermi liquid theory in the PG phase. A few phenomenological models have been recently put forward to account for this transformation. However, none of those models have been derived microscopically nor are totally compatible with experimental data. In the present work we show that the observed Fermi-surface reconstruction can be accounted for directly within a standard microscopic $t-J$ model of correla…
We present theoretical results for the optical conductivity and the non-resonant Raman susceptibilities for three principal polarization geometries relevant to the square lattice. The susceptibilities are obtained using the recently developed extremely correlated Fermi liquid theory for the two-dimensional t-t'-J model, where t and t' are the nearest and second neighbor hopping. Our results are sensitively depending on t, t'. By studying this quartet of related dynamical susceptibilities, and their dependence on t, t', doping and temperature, we provide a useful framework for interpreting and …
We characterize the electron doping evolution of (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ by means of angle-resolved photoemission. Concomitant with the metal insulator transition around $x\approx0.05$ we find the emergence of coherent quasiparticle states forming a closed small Fermi surface of volume $3x/2$, where $x$ is the independently measured La concentration. The quasiparticle weight $Z$ remains large along the entire Fermi surface, consistent with the moderate renormalization of the low-energy dispersion. This indicates a conventional, weakly correlated Fermi liquid state with a momentum ind…
A model of strongly correlated spinless fermions hopping on a checkerboard lattice is mapped onto a quantum fully-packed loop model. We identify a large number of fluctuationless states specific to the fermionic case. We also show that for a class of fluctuating states, the fermionic sign problem can be gauged away. This claim is supported by numerically evaluating the energies of the low-lying states. Furthermore, we analyze in detail the excitations at the Rokhsar-Kivelson point of this model thereby using the relation to the height model and the single-mode approximation.
I derive a dual description of lattice fermions, specifically focusing on the t-J and Hubbard models, that allow diagrammatic techniques to be employed efficiently in the strongly correlated regime, as well as for systems with a restricted Hilbert space. These constructions are based on spin-charge transformation, where the lattice fermions of the original model are mapped onto spins and spin-less fermions. This mapping can then be combined with Popov-Fedotov fermionisation, where the spins are mapped onto lattice fermions with imaginary chemical potential. The resulting models do not contain …
Strongly correlated Fermi systems are fundamental systems in physics that are best studied experimentally, which until very recently have lacked theoretical explanations. This review discusses the construction of a theory and the analysis of phenomena occurring in strongly correlated Fermi systems such as heavy-fermion (HF) metals and two-dimensional (2D) Fermi systems. It is shown that the basic properties and the scaling behavior of HF metals can be described within the framework of a fermion condensation quantum phase transition (FCQPT) and extended quasiparticle paradigm that allow us to e…
We show that Monte Carlo sampling of the Feynman diagrammatic series (DiagMC) can be used for tackling hard fermionic quantum many-body problems in the thermodynamic limit by presenting accurate results for the repulsive Hubbard model in the correlated Fermi liquid regime. Sampling Feynman's diagrammatic series for the single-particle self-energy we can study moderate values of the on-site repulsion ($U/t \sim 4$) and temperatures down to $T/t=1/40$. We compare our results with high temperature series expansion and with single-site and cluster dynamical mean-field theory.
The spin susceptibility $χ(T)$ of strongly correlated Fermi systems is investigated in the density region where Fermi-liquid theory fails. We attribute this failure to a specific quantum phase transition associated with a rearrangement of the Landau state at low temperatures $T$, retaining the assumption that the Landau quasiparticle picture survives in a generic sense. Taking into account the resulting modification of the quasiparticle istribution function, the spin susceptibility $χ(T)$ is shown to contain a Curie-Weiss component $χ_{\rm CW}(T)\sim (T-Θ_{\rm W})^{-1}$, with the Weiss tempera…
We study the Green's function of a gauge invariant fermionic operator in a strongly coupled field theory at nonzero temperature and density using a dual gravity description. The gravity model contains a charged black hole in four dimensional anti-de Sitter space and probe charged fermions. In particular, we consider the effects of the spin of these probe fermions on the properties of the Green's function. There exists a spin-orbit coupling between the spin of an electron and the electric field of a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. On the field theory side, this coupling leads to a Rashba like di…
We have designed a new multi-scale approach for Strongly Correlated Systems by combining the Dynamical Cluster Approximation (DCA) and the recently introduced dual-fermion formalism. This approach employs an exact mapping from a real lattice to a DCA cluster of linear size Lc embedded in a dual fermion lattice. Short-length-scale physics is addressed by the DCA cluster calculation, while longer-length-scale physics is addressed diagrammatically using dual fermions. The bare and dressed dual Fermionic Green functions scale as O(1/Lc) so perturbation theory on the dual lattice converges very qui…
Through resistivity measurements of an organic crystal hosting massless Dirac fermions with a charge-ordering instability, we reveal the effect of interactions among Dirac fermions on the charge transport. A low-temperature resistivity upturn appears robustly irrespectively of pressure and is enhanced while approaching the critical pressure of charge ordering, indicating that the insulating behavior originates from short-range Coulomb interactions. Observation of apparently vanishing gap in the charge-ordered phase accords with the theoretical prediction of the non-topological edge states.
In this paper, we show how the two-particle Green function (2PGF) can be obtained within the framework of the Dual Fermion approach. This facilitates the calculation of the susceptibility in strongly correlated systems where long-ranged non-local correlations cannot be neglected. We formulate the Bethe-Salpeter equations for the full vertex in the particle-particle and particle-hole channels and introduce an approximation for practical calculations. The scheme is applied to the two-dimensional Hubbard model at half filling. The spin-spin susceptibility is found to strongly increase for the wav…
We present a generalization of the recently developed dual fermion approach introduced for correlated lattices to non-equilibrium problems. In its local limit, the approach has been used to devise an efficient impurity solver, the superperturbation solver for the Anderson impurity model (AIM). Here we show that the general dual perturbation theory can be formulated on the Keldysh contour. Starting from a reference Hamiltonian system, in which the time-dependent solution is found by exact diagonalization, we make a dual perturbation expansion in order to account for the relaxation effects from …
We present a development of strong-coupling diagrammatic techniques which relies on integrating out mean-field-like paths prior to conducting the expansion. This makes it possible to expand around a state with a quasiparticle spectrum that takes into account all kinetic effects that do not explicitly depend on nonlocal correlations. These paths contribute most of the kinetic energy in correlated systems, and so this protocol provides a starting point for the expansion that more closely resembles the full theory. Comparisons to existing exact results clearly confirm this.
We investigate the quantum many-body instabilities of the extended Hubbard model for spinless fermions on the honeycomb lattice with repulsive nearest-neighbor and 2nd nearest-neighbor density-density interactions. Recent exact diagonalization and infinite density matrix renormalization group results suggest that a putative topological Mott insulator phase driven by the 2nd nearest-neighbor repulsion is suppressed, while other numerically exact approaches support the topological Mott insulator scenario. In the present work, we employ the functional renormalization group (fRG) for correlated fe…
Three-dimensional Fermi surfaces at a high temperature have been clarified for a strongly correlated Ce compound, ferromagnet CeRu$_2$Ge$_2$ in the paramagnetic phase, by virtue of a soft x-ray $hν$-dependent (700-860 eV) ARPES. Although the observed Fermi surfaces as well as quasiparticle dispersions are partly explained by a band-structure calculation based on a localized $4f$ model, qualitative discrepancy in experiments, between our APRES in the paramagnetic phase and de Haas-van Alphen measurement in the ferromagnetic phase, is revealed. This suggests a fundamental change in the $4f$ cont…
We derive the effective low-energy theory for single-wall carbon nanotubes including the Coulomb interactions among electrons. The generic model found here consists of two spin-1/2 fermion chains which are coupled by the interaction. We analyze the theory using bosonization, renormalization-group techniques, and Majorana refermionization. Several experimentally relevant consequences of the breakdown of Fermi liquid theory observed here are discussed in detail, e.g., magnetic instabilities, anomalous conductance laws, and impurity screening profiles.
We examine theoretically the effects caused by a periodic external potential on the correlated motion of a two-dimensional electron system under strong magnetic fields corresponding to a filling factor 1/2. To describe the resulting complex dynamics, we adopt a composite fermion approach and we determine in a two loop approximation the density-response function $K_{00}(\bfq,ω)$ and the compressibility. We show explicitly that the long-wavelength limit of $K_{00}(\bfq,ω)$ exhibits substantial anisotropic behavior induced by the modulation, and that the system tends to be incompressible in a dir…
While an ordinary Fermi sea is perturbatively robust to interactions, the paradigmatic composite-fermion (CF) Fermi sea arises as a non-perturbative consequence of emergent gauge fields in a system where there was no Fermi sea to begin with. A mean-field picture suggests two Fermi seas, of composite fermions made from electrons or holes in the lowest Landau level, which occupy different areas away from half filling and thus appear to represent distinct states. We show that in the microscopic theory of composite fermions, which satisfies particle-hole symmetry in the lowest Landau level to an e…
We show that a strongly correlated Fermi system with the fermion condensate, which exhibits strong deviations from Landau Fermi liquid behavior, is driven into the Landau Fermi liquid by applying a small magnetic field $B$ at temperature T=0. This field-induced Landau Fermi liquid behavior provides the constancy of the Kadowaki-Woods ratio. A reentrance into the strongly correlated regime is observed if the magnetic field $B$ decreases to zero, then the effective mass $M^*$ diverges as $M^*\propto 1/\sqrt{B}$. At finite temperatures, the strongly correlated regime is restored at some temperatu…
We put forward a relation between the static charge fluctuations and the conductance of correlated many-fermion systems at zero temperature, avoiding the use of time-dependent fluctuations as in the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Static charge fluctuations can efficiently be computed for low-dimensional systems using tensor network approaches, while the conductance is often significantly more difficult to obtain, requiring a challenging low-frequency linear response computation or an explicit time evolution. We put this relation to the test for quantum dot and quantum point contact setups, w…
We show that the presence of Fermi or non-Fermi liquid behavior in the SU(N) x SU(M) Anderson impurity models may be read off the infrared threshold exponents governing the spinon and holon dynamics in a slave boson representation of these models. We construct a conserving T-matrix approximation which recovers the exact exponents with good numerical accuracy. Our approximation includes both coherent spin flip scattering and charge fluctuation processes. For the single-channel case the tendency to form bound states drastically modifies the low energy behavior. For the multi-channel case in the …
Using ultra-high quality SiGe/Si/SiGe quantum wells at millikelvin temperatures, we experimentally compare the energy-averaged effective mass, $m$, with that at the Fermi level, $m_F$, and verify that the behaviours of these measured values are qualitatively different. With decreasing electron density (or increasing interaction strength), the mass at the Fermi level monotonically increases in the entire range of electron densities, while the energy-averaged mass saturates at low densities. The qualitatively different behaviour reveals a precursor to the interaction-induced single-particle spec…
Strongly correlated Fermi systems are among the most intriguing and fundamental systems in physics. We show that the herbertsmithite ZnCu3(OH)6Cl2 can be viewed as a new type of strongly correlated electrical insulator that possesses properties of heavy-fermion metals with one exception: it resists the flow of electric charge. We demonstrate that herbertsmithite's low temperature properties are defined by a strongly correlated quantum spin liquid made with such hypothetic particles as fermionic spinons which carry spin 1/2 and no charge. Our calculations of its thermodynamic and relaxation pro…
We study the one dimensional t-t'-J model for generic couplings using two complementary theories, the extremely correlated Fermi liquid theory and time-dependent density matrix renormalization group over a broad energy scale. The two methods provide a unique insight into the strong momentum dependence of the self-energy of this prototypical non-Fermi liquid, described at low energies as a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. We also demonstrate its intimate relationship to spin-charge separation, i.e. the splitting of Landau quasiparticles of higher dimensions into two constituents, driven by strong qua…
We derive an efficient method for treating renormalization contributions at two-loop level within the functional renormalization group in the one-particle irreducible formalism for fermions. It is based on a decomposition of the two-particle vertex in charge, magnetic and pairing channels. The method treats single-particle and collective excitations in all channels on equal footing, allows for the description of symmetry-breaking and captures collective mode fluctuation physics in the infrared. As a first application, we study the superfluid ground state of the two-dimensional attractive Hubba…
We study the two-dimensional $t$-$J$ model with second neighbor hopping parameter $t'$ and in a broad range of doping $δ$ using a closed set of equations from the {\em Extremely Correlated Fermi Liquid} (ECFL) theory. We obtain asymmetric energy distribution curves and symmetric momentum distribution curves of the spectral function, consistent with experimental data. We further explore the Fermi surface and local density of states for different parameter sets. Using the spectral function, we calculate the resistivity, Hall number and spin susceptibility. The curvature change in the resistivity…
The classic composite fermion field theory (Ref. 1) builds up an excellent framework to uniformly study important physical objects and globally explain anomalous experimental phenomena in fractional quantum Hall physics while there are also inherent weaknesses. We present a nonperturbative emergent Dirac fermion theory from this strongly correlated composite fermion field theory, which overcomes these serious long-standing shortcomings. The particle-hole symmetry of Dirac equation resolves this particle-hole symmetry enigma in the composite fermion field theory. With the help of presented nume…
An integrable eight state supersymmtric $U$ model is proposed, which is a fermion model with correlated single-particle and pair hoppings as well as uncorrelated triple-particle hopping. It has an $gl(3|1)$ supersymmetry and contains one symmetry-preserving free parameter. The model is solved and the Bethe ansatz equations are obtained.
We treat the nonequilibrium motion of a single impurity atom in a low-temperature single-species Fermi sea, interacting via a contact interaction. In the nonequilibrium regime, the impurity does a superdiffusive geometric random walk where the typical distance traveled grows with time as $\sim t^{d/(d+1)}$ for the $d$-dimensional system with $d\geq 2$. For nonzero temperature $T$, this crosses over to diffusive motion at long times with diffusivity $D\sim T^{-(d-1)/2}$. These results apply also to a nonzero concentration of impurity atoms as long as they remain dilute and nondegenerate.
We introduce a new mathematical object, the "fermionant" ${\mathrm{Ferm}}_N(G)$, of type $N$ of an $n \times n$ matrix $G$. It represents certain $n$-point functions involving $N$ species of free fermions. When N=1, the fermionant reduces to the determinant. The partition function of the repulsive Hubbard model, of geometrically frustrated quantum antiferromagnets, and of Kondo lattice models can be expressed as fermionants of type N=2, which naturally incorporates infinite on-site repulsion. A computation of the fermionant in polynomial time would solve many interesting fermion sign problems.
The concept of exchange in strongly-correlated fermions is reviewed with emphasis on the generalization of the Heisenberg pair exchange to higher order n-particle permutations. The "frustration" resulting from competing ferromagnetic three-spin exchange and antiferromagnetic two- and four-spin exchanges is illustrated on a two-dimensional model system: solid 3He films. Recent experimental results proving the presence of four-spin exchange interactions in the CuO2 plaquettes of high Tc cuprates are reported.
The dual fermion method is a multiscale approach for solving lattice problems of interacting strongly correlated systems. In this paper, we present the \texttt{opendf} code, an open-source implementation of the dual fermion method applicable to fermionic single-orbital lattice models in dimensions $D=1,2,3$ and $4$. The method is built on a dynamical mean field starting point, which neglects all local correlations, and perturbatively adds spatial correlations. Our code is distributed as an open-source package under the GNU public license version 2.
The two-chain model of correlated fermions, appropriate e.g. for doped spin ladders or carbon nanotubes, is investigated in the weak-interaction limit. It is shown that the model scales to situations with high internal symmetries, generically SO(6), whereas on critical lines there is SO(5) or SO(3) symmetry. Consequences for the level spectroscopy of the model are discussed. In particular, the ``pi-mode'' is shown to be sixfold degenerate and contains both spin and charge excitations.
Strong interactions and topology drive a wide variety of correlated ground states. Some of the most interesting of these ground states, such as fractional quantum Hall states and fractional Chern insulators, have fractionally charged quasiparticles. Correlations in these phases are captured by the binding of electrons and vortices into emergent particles called composite fermions. Composite fermion quasiparticles are randomly localized at high levels of disorder and may exhibit charge order when there is not too much disorder in the system. However, more complex correlations were predicted whe…
Influence of short-range four-fermion interactions on quadratic and cubic nodal line fermion systems is studied by renormalization group theory. It is found that arbitrarily weak four-fermion interaction could drive quadratic or cubic nodal line fermion system to a new phase. According to the initial conditions and value of fermion flavor, the system may appear three kinds of instabilities. First, quadratic or cubic nodal line is split into conventional nodal lines, thus the system becomes nodal line semimetal. Second, finite excitonic gap is generated, and the system becomes an excitonic insu…
We introduce a scheme for efficiently describing pure states of strongly correlated fermions in higher dimensions using unitary circuits featuring a causal cone. A local way of computing local expectation values is presented. We formulate a dynamical reordering scheme, corresponding to time-adaptive Jordan-Wigner transformation, that avoids nonlocal string operators. Primitives of such a reordering scheme are highlighted. Fermionic unitary circuits can be contracted with the same complexity as in the spin case. The scheme gives rise to a variational description of fermionic models not sufferin…
To reduce the rapidly growing computational cost of the dual fermion lattice calculation with increasing system size, we introduce two embedding schemes. One is the real fermion embedding, and the other is the dual fermion embedding. Our numerical tests show that the real fermion and dual fermion embedding approaches converge to essentially the same result. The application on the Anderson disorder and Hubbard models shows that these embedding algorithms converge more quickly with system size as compared to the conventional dual fermion method, for the calculation of both single-particle and tw…
Using the adaptive time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group method, we study the time evolution of strongly correlated spinless fermions on a one-dimensional lattice after a sudden change of the interaction strength. For certain parameter values, two different initial states (e.g., metallic and insulating), lead to observables which become indistinguishable after relaxation. We find that the resulting quasi-stationary state is non-thermal. This result holds for both integrable and non-integrable variants of the system.
In the context of realistic calculations for strongly-correlated materials with $d$- or $f$-electrons the efficient computation of multi-orbital models is of paramount importance. Here we introduce a set of invariants for the SU(2)-symmetric Kanamori Hamiltonian which allows to massively speed up the calculation of the fermionic trace in hybridization-expansion continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo algorithms. As an application, we show that, exploiting this set of good quantum numbers, the study of the orbital-selective Mott-transition in systems with up to seven correlated orbitals becomes fea…
Systematic deviations from standard Fermi-liquid behavior have been widely observed and documented in several classes of strongly correlated metals. For many of these systems, mounting evidence is emerging that the anomalous behavior is most likely triggered by the interplay of quenched disorder and strong electronic correlations. In this review, we present a broad overview of such disorder-driven non-Fermi-liquid behavior, and discuss various examples where the anomalies have been studied in detail. We describe both their phenomenological aspects as observed in experiment, and the current the…
A systematic nonperturbative scheme is implemented to calculate the ground state energy for a wide class of strongly correlated fermion models. The scheme includes: (a) method of automatic calculations of the cumulants of the model Hamiltonian; (b) method of the ground state energy calculation from these cumulants using the $t$-expansion proposed by Horn and Weinstein [Phys. Rev. D \textbf{30}, 1256 (1984)] with new procedure of its extrapolation to $t\rightarrow\infty$. As an example of application of the method all cumulants up to the 8-th order for spinless fermion model are calculated exac…
The self-consistent theory of the fermion condensation, a specific phase transition which results in a rearrangement of the single particle degrees of freedom in strongly correlated Fermi systems is developed. Beyond the phase transition point, the single particle spectra are shown to be flat. The interplay between the flattening and the damping of the single particle spectra at $T\to 0$ is investigated. The width $γ(ε)$ of the single particle states is found to grow up linearly with $ε$ over a wide range of energy as in a marginal Fermi liquid. Our results gain insight into the success of the…
In quantum materials, electrons that have strong correlations tend to localize, leading to quantum spins as the building blocks for low-energy physics. When strongly correlated electrons coexist with more weakly-correlated conduction electrons, multiple channels of effective interactions develop and compete with each other. The competition creates quantum fluctuations having a large spectral weight, with the associated entropies reaching significant fractions of $R\ln 2$ per electron. Advancing a framework to understand how the fluctuating local moments influence unconventional superconductivi…
