The $^6$He+$^{12}$C elastic scattering data at beam energies of 3, 38.3 and 41.6 MeV/nucleon are studied utilizing the microscopic optical potentials obtained by a double-folding procedure and also by using those inherent in the high-energy approximation. The calculated optical potentials are based on the neutron and proton density distributions of colliding nuclei established in an appropriate model for $^6$He and obtained from the electron scattering form factors for $^{12}$C. The depths of the real and imaginary parts of the microscopic optical potentials are considered as fitting parameters. At low energy the volume optical potentials reproduce sufficiently well the experimental data. At higher energies, generally, additional surface terms having form of a derivative of the imaginary part of the microscopic optical potential are needed. The problem of ambiguity of adjusted optical potentials is resolved requiring the respective volume integrals to obey the determined dependence on the collision energy. Estimations of the Pauli blocking effects on the optical potentials and cross sections are also given and discussed. Conclusions on the role of the aforesaid effects and on the mechanism of the considered processes are made.
A microscopic optical potential (OP) is derived from NN chiral potentials at the first-order term within the spectator expansion of the multiple scattering theory and adopting the impulse approximation. The performances of our OP are compared with those of a phenomenological OP in the description of elastic proton scattering data on different isotopic chains. An analogous scheme is adopted to construct a microscopic OP for elastic antiproton-nucleus scattering. The results of our OPs are in reasonably good agreement with the experimental data, for both elastic proton and antiproton-nucleus sca…
We construct a microscopic optical potential including breakup effects for elastic scattering of weakly-binding projectiles within the Glauber model, in which a nucleon-nucleus potential is derived by the $g$-matrix folding model. The derived microscopic optical potential is referred to as the eikonal potential. For $d$ scattering, the calculation with the eikonal potential reasonably reproduces the result with an exact calculation estimated by the continuum-discretized coupled-channels method. As the properties of the eikonal potential, the inaccuracy of the eikonal approximation used in the …
Calculations are made of the $K^{+}+^{12}$C, $^{40}$Ca differential elastic scattering cross sections at the beam momenta 0.635, 0.715, and 0.8 GeV/c. To this end the microscopic optical potential derived in the high-energy approximation was used where existing data on the kaon-nucleon amplitude and on the point-like density distributions of target-nuclei were utilized. The effect of different methods of relativization was studied and shown to play an important role. A good agreement with the experimental data on differential elastic cross sections was obtained.
We employ a microscopic continuum-discretized coupled-channels reaction framework (MCDCC) to study the elastic angular distribution of the $^7$Li$=α+t$ nucleus colliding with $^{12}$C and $^{28}$Si targets at $E_{\text{Lab}}$=350 MeV. In this framework, the $^7$Li projectile is described in a microscopic cluster model and impinges on non-composite targets. The diagonal and coupling potentials are constructed from nucleon-target interactions and $^7$Li microscopic wave functions. We obtain a fair description of the experimental data, in the whole angular range studied, when continuum channels a…
Elastic scattering observables (differential cross section and analyzing power) are calculated for the reaction $^6$He(p,p)$^6$He at projectile energies starting at 71 MeV/nucleon. The optical potential needed to describe the reaction is based on a microscopic Watson first-order folding potential, which explicitly takes into account that the two neutrons outside the $^4$He-core occupy an open p-shell. The folding of the single-particle harmonic oscillator density matrix with the nucleon-nucleon t-matrix leads for this case to new terms not present in traditional folding optical potentials for …
Information on the equation of state (EOS) of neutron matter may be gained from studies of 208Pb. Descriptions of 208Pb require credible models of structure, taking particular note also of the spectrum. Such may be tested by analyses of scattering data. Herein, we report on such analyses using an RPA model for 208Pb in a folding model of the scattering. No a posteriori adjustment of parameters are needed to obtain excellent agreement with data. From those analyses, the skin thickness of 208Pb is constrained to lie in the range 0.13-0.17 fm.
Variational Monte Carlo wave functions, obtained from a realistic Hamiltonian consisting of the Argonne v18 two-nucleon and Urbana-IX three-nucleon interactions, are used to calculate the 6Li ground-state longitudinal and transverse form factors as well as transition form factors to the first four excited states. The charge and current operators include one- and two-body components, leading terms of which are constructed consistently with the two-nucleon interaction. The calculated form factors and radiative widths are in good agreement with available experimental data.
In the paper, the results of analysis of elastic scattering and breakup processes in interactions of the $^{11}$Li nucleus with protons are presented. The hybrid model of the microscopic optical potential (OP) is applied. This OP includes the single-folding real part, while its imaginary part is derived within the high-energy approximation (HEA) theory. For the $^{11}$Li$+p$ elastic scattering, the microscopic large-scale shell model (LSSM) density of $^{11}$Li is used. The depths of the real and imaginary parts of OP are fitted to the elastic scattering data at 62, 68.4, and 75 MeV/nucleon, b…
Comparisons are made between results of calculations for intermediate energy nucleon-nucleus scattering for 12C, 16O, 40Ca, 90Zr, and 208Pb, using optical potentials obtained from global Dirac phenomenology and from a microscopic Schrödinger model. Differential cross sections and spin observables for scattering from the set of five nuclei at 65 MeV and 200 MeV have been studied to assess the relative merits of each approach. Total reaction cross sections from proton-nucleus and total cross sections from neutron-nucleus scattering have been evaluated and compared with data for those five target…
Background: Microscopic description of the projectile, based on an effective NN interaction, in a microscopic CDCC (MCDCC) model [PRL 111, 082701 (2013)] has been successfully applied to the 7Li+208Pb scattering. Purpose: The MCDCC method is applied to the low energy elastic scattering of 17F, 17O and 19F on 58Ni and 208Pb targets. The goal of the calculations is twofold - to test the adequacy and the accuracy of the MCDCC model for the heavier projectiles, and to study the contribution of various channels to the elastic scattering cross sections. Methods: The elastic scattering cross sections…
An approach to calculate microscopic optical potential (OP) with the real part obtained by a folding procedure and with the imaginary part inherent in the high-energy approximation (HEA) is applied to study the $^8$He+p elastic scattering data at energies of tens of MeV/nucleon (MeV/N). The neutron and proton density distributions obtained in different models for $^{8}$He are utilized in the calculations of the differential cross sections. The role of the spin-orbit potential is studied. Comparison of the calculations with the available experimental data on the elastic scattering differential …
We investigate projectile breakup effects on 6Li+209Bi elastic scattering near the Coulomb barrier with the four-body version of the continuum-discretized coupled-channel method (four-body CDCC). This is the first application of four-body CDCC to 6Li elastic scattering. The elastic scattering is well described by the p+n+4He+209Bi four-body model. We propose a reasonable three-body model for describing the four-body scattering, clarifying four-body dynamics of the elastic scattering.
We investigate $K^{+}$-nucleus elastic scattering at intermediate energies within a microscopic optical model approach. To this effect we use the current $K^{+}$-nucleon {\it (KN)} phase shifts from the Center for Nuclear Studies of the George Washington University as primary input. First, the {\it KN} phase shifts are used to generate Gel'fand-Levitan-Marchenko real and local inversion potentials. Secondly, these potentials are supplemented with a short range complex separable term in such a way that the corresponding unitary and non-unitary {\it KN} $S$ matrices are exactly reproduced. These…
Elastic scattering is a very important process to understand nuclear interactions in finite nuclei. Despite decades of efforts, the goal of reaching a coherent description of this physical process in terms of microscopic forces is still far from being completed. In previous papers (Phys. Rev. C93, 034619 (2016), Phys. Rev. C96, 044001 (2017)) we derived a nonrelativistic theoretical optical potential from nucleon-nucleon chiral potentials at fourth (N3LO) and fifth order (N4LO). We checked convergence patterns and established theoretical error bands. With this work we study the performances of…
The general form of the cross section as well as the polarizations of electron-deuteron elastic scattering are given. Two-photon exchange effects are analyzed. Possible signatures of the two-photon exchange effects in the electron-deuteron elastic scattering are discussed.
A general expression for the $π-N$ and $π-Δ$ scattering lengths is derived in the framework of a microscopic calculation. Annihilation, negative energy wave-functions and spontaneous chiral symmetry are included consistently. The point-like limit is used to calculate the scattering lengths.
We consider T-violating P-conserving proton-deuteron forward elastic scattering amplitude in a frame of the Glauber multiscattering theory, proceeding from T-odd, P-even N-N interaction.
The elastic and large-angle quasi-elastic scattering reactions were studied with the same nucleus-nucleus potential proposed for describing fusion reactions. The elastic scattering angle distributions of some reactions are reasonably well reproduced by the proposed Woods-Saxon potential with fixed parameters at energies much higher than the Coulomb barrier. With an empirical barrier distribution based on the modified Woods-Saxon potential and taking into account the influence of nucleons transfer, the calculated quasi-elastic scattering cross sections of a series of reactions are in good agree…
Basing on the kwon experimental measurements of differential cross sections on n3He elastic scattering in the angular energy range 200 - 1600 the standard phase shifts analysis was performed at the energies from 1 MeV up to 5 MeV.
Detailed comparisons are made between results of calculations for intermediate energy nucleon--208Pb scattering using optical potentials obtained from Dirac phenomenology and a microscopic Schrodinger model. The two approaches yield quite similar results for all of the observables with each projectile, including spin observables, suggesting the two models are physically equivalent. A new phenomenon in the analyzing power is confirmed in the results for 100 MeV scattering.
We study how d+3He beckward elastic scattering is connected with momentum distribution of the deuteron in 3He. With this aim th relativistic calculations in the framework of proton exchange is investigated. We also consider possible reaction mechanisms beyond the proton exchange
Thermalization of quark-gluon matter is studied with a transport equation that includes contributions of 2-to-2 and 3-to-3 elastic scatterings. Thermalization time is related to the squared amplitudes for the elastic scatterings that are calculated in perturbative QCD.
Deuteron-proton elastic scattering is studied in the multiple scattering expansion formalism. The four contributions are taken into account: one-nucleon-exchange, single- and double scattering, and $Δ$-isobar excitation. The presented approach was applied to describe the differential cross sections at deuteron energies between 500 and 1300 MeV in a whole angular range. The obtained results are compared with the experimental data.
We analyze the elastic scattering of protons on a 4n system. This was used as part of the detection technique of a recent experiment [1] to search for the 4n (tetraneutron) as a bound particle. We show that it is unlikely that this process alone could yield the events reported in ref. [1], unless the 4n has an anomalously large backward elastic scattering amplitude.
General expressions for all parity-conserving polarization observables of elastic electron-nucleon scattering in the one-photon exchange approximation are derived for a general frame of reference, i.e.\ not assumming scattering off a nucleon at rest and not specializing to a specific system of coordinates. Essentially, the given expressions are also valid for the inverse process, i.e.\ nucleon scattering off electrons.
We evaluated the time delay plot in the established region of the Delta(1232) resonance through the use of elastic scattering phase shift analysis of the partial wave amplitude P33. The pole position and width of the Delta(1232) resonance were obtained and found in agreement with earlier calculations.
We report on the spin.dependent neutron scattering length on 3He from a microscopic calculation of p-3H, n-3He, and d-2H scattering employing the Argonne v18 nucleon-nucleon potential with and without additional three-nucleon force. The results and that of a comprehensive R-matrix analysis are compared to a recent measurement. The overall agreement for the scattering lengths is quite good. The imaginary parts of the scattering lengths are very sensitive to the inclusion of three-nucleon forces, whereas the real parts are almost insensitive.
We analyze $^{16}$O-$^{16}$O and $^{12}$C-$^{12}$C scattering with the microscopic coupled-channels method and investigate the coupled-channels and three-nucleon-force (3NF) effects on elastic and inelastic cross sections. In the microscopic coupled-channels calculation, the Melbourne g-matrix interaction modified according to the chiral 3NF effects is used. It is found that the coupled-channels and 3NF effects additively change both the elastic and inelastic cross sections. As a result, the coupled-channels calculation including the 3NF effects significantly improves the agreement between the…
The density distributions of $^{10}$Be and $^{11}$Be nuclei obtained within the quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) model and the generator coordinate method (GCM) are used to calculate the microscopic optical potentials (OPs) and cross sections of elastic scattering of these nuclei on protons and $^{12}$C at energies $E<100$ MeV/nucleon. The real part of the OP is calculated using the folding model with the exchange terms included, while the imaginary part of the OP that reproduces the phase of scattering is obtained in the high-energy approximation (HEA). In this hybrid model of OP the free parameters…
The differential cross sections and analyzing powers from the elastic scattering of 25 and 40 MeV protons from many nuclei have been studied. Analyses have been made using a fully microscopic model of proton-nucleus scattering seeking to establish a means appropriate for use in analyses of radioactive beam scattering from hydrogen with ion energies 25A and 40A MeV.
Elastic $^{16}$O+$^{12}$C scattering is known to exhibit the nuclear rainbow pattern at incident energies $E_\text{lab}\gtrsim 200$ MeV, with the Airy structure of the far-side scattering cross section clearly seen at medium and large angles. Such a rainbow pattern is well described by the deep real optical potential (OP) given by the double-folding model (DFM). At lower energies, the extensive elastic $^{16}$O+$^{12}$C scattering data show consistently that the nuclear rainbow pattern at backward angles is deteriorated by an oscillating enhancement of elastic cross section that is difficult t…
Nucleon-nucleon potential is given in coordinate space starting from the Bethe-Salpeter equation appropriate to elastic scattering at the intermediate energy region. The next order in the potential is added to construct the scattering wave for ${}^3S_1$ state. The constant terms have an effect on the spin observables particularly at the center of mass angle $θ=90^{\circ}$
We study theoretically how we can determine the neutron density distributions of unstable nuclei from proton elastic scattering. We apply the relativistic impulse model to study the sensitivities of the observables to the density distributionswhich are expressed in Woods-Saxon form. We find that the both radius and diffuseness of densities can be determined from restricted elastic scattering data in principle. We think this result is helpful to design future experiments.
We study in detail the barrier distributions extracted from large-angle quasi-elastic scattering of heavy ions at energies near the Coulomb barrier. Using a closed-form expression for scattering from a single barrier, we compare the quasi-elastic barrier distribution with the corresponding test function for fusion. We examine the isocentrifugal approximation in coupled-channels calculations of quasi-elastic scattering and find that for backward angles, it works well, justifying the concept of a barrier distribution for scattering processes. This method offers an interesting tool for investigat…
We summarize results obtained in our studies of the pion-nucleon coupling constant. Several different techniques have been applied to pi-N and NN elastic scattering data, and the existing database for single-pion photoproduction. The most reliable determination comes from pi-N elastic scattering. The sensitivity in this reaction was found to be greater, by at least a factor of 3, when compared with analyses of NN elastic scattering or single-pion photoproduction.
We apply the GLV Reaction Operator formalism to compute the effects of multiple elastic scatterings of jets propagating through dense matter. We derive the elastic Reaction Operator and demonstrate that the recursion relations have a closed form solution that reduces to the familiar Glauber form. We also investigate the accuracy of the Gaussian dipole approximation for jet transverse momentum broadening.
The first ever numerical solution of five-body Faddeev-Yakubovsky equations is presented in this work. Modern realistic Nucleon-Nucleon Hamiltonians have been tested when describing low energy elastic neutron scattering on $^4$He nucleus. Obtained results have been compared with those available in the literature and based on solution of the Schrödinger equation.
The eigenphase shifts and mixing parameters for elastic p-d scattering below the deuteron-breakup threshold are calculated for the AV14 two-body potential using two different numerical methods. The excellent agreement confirms that it is possible to perform accurate numerical studies of p-d scattering as well as n-d scattering for low energies. The numerical results can be considered as benchmarks for future calculations.
We calculate the two-boson-exchange (TBE) corrections to the parity asymmetry of the elastic electron-proton scattering in a model using the formalism of generalized parton distributions (GPDs).
A partial-wave analysis of NN elastic scattering data has been completed. This analysis covers an expanded energy range, from threshold to a laboratory kinetic energy of 2.5 GeV, in order to include recent elastic pp scattering data from the EDDA collaboration. The results of both single-energy and energy-dependent analyses are described.
$α$ elastic and inelastic scattering on $^{12}$C is investigated with the coupled-channel calculation using microscopic $α$-$^{12}$C potentials, which are derived by folding the Melbourne $g$-matrix $NN$ interaction with the matter and transition densities of $^{12}$C. These densities are obtained by a microscopic structure model of the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics combined with and without the $3α$ generator coordinate method. The calculation reproduces satisfactorily well the observed elastic and inelastic cross sections at incident energies of $E_α=130$~MeV, 172.5~MeV, 240~MeV, and 38…
Elastic lepton-deuteron scattering was considered within the limit of zero lepton mass. The deuteron wave function in the coordinate representation for the Reid93 potential was applied to numerical calculations. The angular-momentum dependence of values spin correlation coefficients $C_{xz}^{(0)}$, $C_{zz}^{(0)}$ and tensor asymmetries $A_{xx}^{(0)}$, $A_{xz}^{(0)}$, $A_{zz}^{(0)}$ have been evaluated in 3D format for Reid93 potential. These polarization observables are analyzed for different energies and scattering angles. Application of the obtained values allows better explanation and illus…
Microscopic optical potentials for nucleon-nucleus (NA) scattering obtained from the full folding of the effective g matrices, solutions of the Bruckner-Bethe-Goldstone equation, with the densities of the target, are applied to the case of neutron-nucleus scattering. Given that the optical potentials are specified in all two-body angular momentum, spin and isospin channels available to the NA scattering, the only difference in this model description of proton and neutron scattering observables for a given nucleus is in the inclusion of the Coulomb interaction. A priori microscopic optical mode…
The deuteron-proton elastic scattering is studied in the multiple scattering expansion formalism. The contributions of the one-nucleon-exchange, single- and double scattering are taken into account. The Love and Franey parameterization of the nucleon-nucleon $t$-matrix is used, that gives an opportunity to include the off-energy-shell effects into calculations. Differential cross sections are considered at four energies, $T_d=390, 500, 880, 1200$ MeV. The obtained results are compared with the experimental data.
A partial-wave analysis (PWA) of NN elastic scattering data has been completed. This analysis covers an expanded energy range, from threshold to a laboratory kinetic energy of 3 GeV, in order to include recent elastic pp polarized scattering measurements performed at SATURNE II. Results of the energy-dependent fit are compared with single-energy solutions and Saclay amplitudes obtained via the direct-reconstruction approach. We also comment on the status of Eps1 in the low-energy region.
We analyze the radiative correction to high energy elastic electron-proton scattering of polarized electrons. We show that if the approximations inherent in the calculations developed by Tsai and given in the work of Mo and Tsai, which have been used in the analysis of almost all experimental data pertaining to medium and high energy elastic electron scattering for the past three decades, are maintained, then the same radiative correction applies both in the case of initially polarized and unpolarized electrons.
The complex Kohn variational principle and the (correlated) hyperspherical harmonics method are applied to study the proton-deuteron elastic scattering at energies above the deuteron breakup threshold. Results for the elastic cross section and various elastic polarization observables have been obtained by fully taking into account the long-range effect of the Coulomb interaction and using a realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction model. Detailed comparison between the theoretical predictions and the accurate and abundant proton-deuteron experimental data can now be performed.
Bethe-Salpeter equation is applied to $p$-$n$ elastic scattering. The spin observables are calculated by the M matrix similar to $p$-$p$ case. The parameters of the meson-exchange model are used with the cut-off for the pion exchange interaction. Change of the M matrix indicates breaking of the charge independence in the nucleon-nucleon system.
Parity nonconserving two-pion exchange in elastic pp scattering is investigated in the presence of phenomenological strong distortions in various models. Parity violation is included in the nucleon-pion vertex considering NN and N Delta(1232) intermediate states in box and crossed box diagrams. Using the derived parity nonconserving two-pion exchange potential we calculate the longitudinal analyzing power A_L in elastic $pp$ scattering. The predicted effect is of the same order as vector meson exchanges.
We argue that, in many situations, fits to elastic scattering data that were historically, and frequently still are, considered `good', are not justifiably so describable. Information about the dynamics of nucleon-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus scattering is lost when elastic scattering phenomenology is insufficiently ambitious. It is argued that in many situations, an alternative approach is appropriate for the phenomenology of nuclear elastic scattering of nucleons and other light nuclei. The approach affords an appropriate means of evaluating folding models, one that fully exploits available e…
A model for elastic scattering of protons at high energies based on the quark-diquark representation of the proton is discussed. The predictions of the model are compared with experimental data for the differential elastic cross-sections from available databases
This is a short review of the physics of single-spin asymmetries caused by two-photon exchange in elastic scattering of electrons by nucleons and nuclei.
The effect of the self-energy on the photon-proton elastic scattering is investigated for the backward and the forward directions. The shape of the Thomson scattering at the photon energy $ω\to 0$ is broken by taking into account the self-energy of proton. The electromagnetic polarizabilities $\barα\pm\barβ$ are calculated by the lowest-order perturbative treatment.
It is considered the problem of spin physics related with the difference of representation of the elastic interaction between the neutron and proton. In the first case the charge-exchange reaction $np\to pn$ under the angle $θ$ is supposed, in the second --- the simple elastic scattering of $np\to np$, when the neutron is going in opposite direction $π-θ$. The transition from one representation to another is provided by the Majorana operator. In the framework of impulse approximation it is twice calculated the quasi-elastic charge-exchange reaction of a neutron on a deuteron. In the frame of $…
It is suggested that proton elastic scattering on atomic electrons allows a precise measurement of the proton charge radius. Very small values of transferred momenta (up to four order of magnitude smaller than the ones presently available) can be reached with high probability.
Here we consider a contribution of Delta(1232) resonance to real photon radiative corrections for elastic $ep$-scattering. The effect is found to be small for past experiments to study unpolarized cross section as well as for the recent VEPP-3 experiment to investigate two-photon exchange effects by precision measurement of $e^\pm p$-scattering cross sections ratio.
We calculate $γZ$ exchange corrections to the parity-violating asymmetry of the elastic electron-proton scattering in a parton model using the formalism of generalized parton distributions(GPDs). We also examine the validity of the zero-momentum-transfer approximation adopted in the literatures and find that it overestimates the $γZ$ exchange effect significantly at the forward scattering angles.
The differential elastic cross sections of $^{12}$C -- $^{12}$C and $^{11}$Li -- $^{12}$C nuclei are calculated in the complete Glauber theory. The role of the possible correlations connected to the shell effects in $^{11}$Li nucleus is considered.
The role of the pion in the parity-conserving and parity-violating quasi-elastic nuclear response functions is analyzed within a relativistic model which fulfills gauge invariance.
We discuss two recent topics on heavy-ion quasi-elastic scattering at energies around the Coulomb barrier. The first topic is an application of quasi-elastic scattering at deep-subbarrier energies to extracting the surface diffuseness parameter of the nucleus-nucleus potential. The second topic is a coupled-channels analysis for the quasi-elastic barrier distribution for the $^{70}$Zn + $^{208}$Pb reaction. We show that the coupled-channels calculations which include the multi-phonon excitations in the colliding nuclei reproduce reasonably well the experimental excitation function for quasi-el…
