We construct, at the linearized level, the three-dimensional (3D) N = 4 supersymmetric "general massive supergravity" and the maximally supersymmetric N = 8 "new massive supergravity". We also construct the maximally supersymmetric linearized N = 7 topologically massive supergravity, although we expect N = 6 to be maximal at the non-linear level.
We analyze maximal supersymmetry in eleven-dimensional supergravity from the point of view of the oriented matroid theory. The mathematical key tools in our discussion are the Englert solution and the chirotope concept. We argue that chirotopes may provide other solutions not only for eleven-dimensional supergravity but for any higher dimensional supergravity theory.
We determine the action for five-dimensional maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills in off-shell supergravity backgrounds. The resulting theory contains novel five-dimensional BF type couplings as well as cubic scalar interactions which vanish in flat space.
We put to test the recently proposed non-linear flux ansatz for maximal supergravity in eleven dimensions, which gives the seven-dimensional flux in terms of the scalars and pseudoscalars of maximal N=8 supergravity, by considering a number of non-trivial solutions of gauged supergravity for which the higher dimensional solutions are known. These include the G$_2$ and SU(4)$^-$ invariant stationary points. The examples considered constitute a very non-trivial check of the ansatz, which it passes with remarkable success.
We show that a generalised reduction of D=10 IIB supergravity leads, in a certain limit, to a maximally extended SO(2) gauged supergravity in D=9. We show the scalar potential of this model allows both Minkowski and a new type of domain wall solution to the Bogomol'nyi equations. We relate these vacua to type IIB D-branes.
We identify the space of symplectic deformations of maximal gauged supergravity theories. Coordinates of such space parametrize inequivalent supergravity models with the same gauge group. We apply our procedure to the SO(8) gauging, extending recent analyses. We also study other interesting cases, including Cremmer-Scherk-Schwarz models and gaugings of groups contained in SL(8,R) and in SU*(8).
In this brief note, we reconsider the problem of finding Euclidean wormhole solutions to maximal supergravity in d dimensions. We find that such solutions exists for all d less than or equal to 9. However, we argue that, in toroidally-compactified string theories, these saddle points never contribute to the path integral because of a tension with U-duality.
We describe recent developments regarding gauged N=8 supergravity in D=4. Using the embedding tensor formulation we show how to classify all the extrema of this theory with a G2 residual gauge symmetry. Our classification contains all the vacua of the recently discovered family of SO(8) gauged maximal supergravities.
We study the four-dimensional {\it N}=8 maximal supergravity in the context of Lie superalgebra SU(8/1). All possible successive superalgebraic truncations from four-dimensional {\it N}=8 theory to {\it N}=7, 6, $\cdots$, 1 supergravity theories are systematically realized as sub-superalgebra chains of SU(8/1) by using the Kac-Dynkin weight techniques.
We show that the double-copy structure of gravity forbids divergences in pure half-maximal (16 supercharge) supergravity at four and five points at one loop in D<8 and at two loops in D<6. We link the cancellations that render these supergravity amplitudes finite to corresponding ones that eliminate forbidden color factors from the divergences of pure nonsupersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. The vanishing of the two-loop four-point divergence in D=5 half-maximal supergravity is an example where a valid counterterm satisfying the known symmetries exists, yet is not present. We also give explicit fo…
We look for critical points with U(2) residual symmetry in 5-dimensional maximally supersymmetric gauged supergravity, by varying the embedding tensor, rather than directly minimizing the scalar potential. We recover all previously known vacua and we find four new vacua, with different gauge groups and cosmological constants. We provide the first example of a maximal supergravity model in $D \geq 4$ having critical points with both positive and vanishing cosmological constant. For each vacuum we also compute the full mass spectrum. All results are analytic.
The structure of one, two and three loop counterterms imposes strong constraints on several non--BPS interactions in the low momentum expansion of the three loop four graviton amplitude in maximal supergravity. The constraints are imposed by demanding consistency with string amplitudes. We analyze these constraints imposed on the D^8 R^4 interaction in 11 dimensional supergravity compactified on T^2. We also discuss partial contributions from counterterms to interactions at higher orders in the momentum expansion.
In this thesis we study maximally supersymmetric solutions of gauged supergravity theories, with special focus on anti-de Sitter solutions. The latter are relevant in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. In the first part we classify all maximally supersymmetric solutions of all gauged or deformed supergravity theories in $D \geq 3$ space-time dimensions. In the second part we exclusively study maximally supersymmetric AdS$_D$ solutions of gauged supergravities in dimensions $D \geq 4$. We discuss the structure of the allowed gauge groups as well as possible supersymmetry preserving defo…
We perform explicitly the toroidal compactification of eleven dimensional supergravity to six dimensions and present its action in a manifestly $SO(5,5)\over SO(5)\times SO(5)$ invariant form using the recently proposed covariant formulation of theories involving chiral fields.
In this note, we describe supersymmetric backgrounds for the four-dimensional maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. As an extension of the method of Festuccia and Seiberg to sixteen supercharges in four dimensions, we utilize the coupling of the gauge theory to maximally extended conformal supergravity. Included among the fields of the conformal supergravity multiplet is the complexified coupling parameter of the gauge theory; therefore, backgrounds with spacetime varying coupling--such as appear in F-theory and Janus configurations--are naturally included in this formalism. We demonstra…
Using a recently proposed group-theoretical approach, we explore novel gaugings of maximal supergravity in four dimensions with gauge group embeddings that can be generated by fluxes of IIB string theory. The corresponding potentials are positive without stationary points. Some allow domain wall solutions which can be elevated to ten dimensions. Appropriate truncations describe type-IIB flux compactifications on T^6 orientifolds leading to non-maximal, four-dimensional, supergravities.
We determine the minimum dimension at which divergences first occur in half-maximal 16-supercharge supergravity at three loops. For the four-point amplitudes, we find that the critical dimension is D=14/3 and give the explicit form of the divergence. We also give the divergence of an additional piece that gives us access to theories with higher degrees of supersymmetry, in particular 20- and 32-supercharge supergravities. We give the divergences of half-maximal supergravity when matter vector multiplets are included as well. Explicit forms of various divergences at one and two loops are also g…
In this paper we search for accelerating power-law solutions and ekpyrotic solutions within minimal and maximal four dimensional supergravity theories. We focus on the STU model for N=1 and on the new CSO(p,q,r) theories, which were recently obtained exploiting electromagnetic duality, for N=8. In the minimal case we find some new ekpyrotic solutions, while in the maximal case we find some new generic power-law solutions. We do not find any new accelerating solutions for these models.
We derive new ansaetze for the 4-form field strength of D=11 supergravity corresponding to uplifts of four-dimensional maximal gauged supergravity. In particular, the ansaetze directly yield the components of the 4-form field strength in terms of the scalars and vectors of the four-dimensional maximal gauged supergravity---in this way they provide an explicit uplift of all four-dimensional consistent truncations of D=11 supergravity. The new ansaetze provide a substantially simpler method for uplifting d=4 flows compared to the previously available method using the 3-form and 6-form potential …
We study AdS backgrounds of N=4 supergravity in four space-time dimensions which preserve all sixteen supercharges. We show that the graviphotons have to form a subgroup of the gauge group that consists of an electric and a magnetic SO(3)_+ x SO(3)_-. Moreover, these N=4 AdS backgrounds are necessarily isolated points in field space which have no moduli.
We perform a systematic search for anti-de Sitter vacua of maximal supergravity with N>2 residual supersymmetries. We find that maximal supergravity admits two 1-parameter classes of N=3 and N=4 vacua, respectively. They are embedded, for the different values of an angular parameter, in the $ω$-rotated SO(8) (N=3) and SO(1,7) (N=4 and 3) gauged models. All vacua disappear in the limit when $ω$ tends to zero. We determine the mass spectra and the AdS-supermultiplet structure. These appear to be the first and only N>2 supersymmetric AdS vacua in maximal supergravity, aside from the N=8 vacua of …
Recently, it has been shown that maximal supergravity allows for non-supersymmetric AdS critical points that are perturbatively stable. We investigate this phenomenon of stability without supersymmetry from the sGoldstino point of view. In particular, we calculate the projection of the mass matrix onto the sGoldstino directions, and derive the necessary conditions for stability. Indeed we find a narrow window allowing for stable SUSY breaking points. As a by-product of our analysis, we find that it seems impossible to perturb supersymmetric critical points into non-supersymmetric ones: there i…
The ultraviolet divergences of amplitude diagrams in maximal supergravity are investigated using the pure spinor superfield formalism in maximal supergravity, with maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory for reference. We comment on the effects of the loop regularisation in relation to the actual absence of high powers (within the degrees of freedom) of the non-minimal variable r. The absence affects previous results of the field theory description, which is examined more closely (with a new b-ghost) with respect to the limit on the dimension for finiteness of the theory, dependent on the n…
In this paper we explore the relation between conformal superalgebras with 64 supercharges and maximal supergravity theories in three, four and six dimensions using twistorial oscillator techniques. The massless fields of N=8 supergravity in four dimensions were shown to fit into a CPT-self-conjugate doubleton supermultiplet of the conformal superalgebra SU(2,2|8) a long time ago. We show that the fields of maximal supergravity in three dimensions can similarly be fitted into the super singleton multiplet of the conformal superalgebra OSp(16|4,R), which is related to the doubleton supermultipl…
We work out the truncation from maximal to half-maximal supergravity in four dimensions. In particular, we determine the explicit constraints on the embedding tensors of both theories. These tensors specify the complete theories, including gauge groups and scalar potentials. Firstly, we find the linear constraint on N=8 theories to allow for a truncation to N=4. Secondly, we determine the additional N=4 quadratic constraints following from N=8. Finally, we comment on a brane interpretation as tadpole conditions for the latter.
We study maximally supersymmetric solutions of all gauged or deformed supergravity theories in $D \ge 3$ space-time dimensions. For vanishing background fluxes the space-time background has to be either Minkowski or anti-de Sitter. We derive a simple criterion for the existence of solutions with non-trivial fluxes and determine all supergravities that satisfy it. We show that their solutions coincide with those of the corresponding ungauged theories and conclude that the known list of maximally supersymmetric solutions is exhaustive.
We show that N = 8 supergravity may possess an even larger symmetry than previously believed. Such an enhanced symmetry is needed to explain why this theory of gravity exhibits ultraviolet behaviour reminiscent of the finite N = 4 Yang-Mills theory. We describe a series of three steps that leads us to this result.
We consider generalized diffeomorphisms on an extended mega-space associated to the U-duality group of gauged maximal supergravity in four dimensions, E_7. Through the bein for the extended metric we derive dynamical (field-dependent) fluxes taking values in the representations allowed by supersymmetry, and obtain their quadratic constraints from gauge consistency conditions. A covariant generalized Ricci tensor is introduced, defined in terms of a connection for the generalized diffeomorphisms. We show that for any torsionless and metric-compatible generalized connection, the Ricci scalar rep…
We argue that recent results in string perturbation theory indicate that the four-graviton amplitude of four-dimensional N=8 supergravity might be ultraviolet finite up to eight loops. We similarly argue that the h-loop M-graviton amplitude might be finite for h<7+M/2.
The ultraviolet divergences of amplitude diagrams in maximal supergravity are characterised by a first possible divergence at seven loops for the 4-point amplitude (logarithmic) and, in its absence, at eight loops. We revisit the pure spinor superfield theory results of [arXiv:1412.5983], stating the absence of the divergence originating in the 4-point 7-loop amplitude as well as those of more than seven loops. The analysis, performed in terms of the one-particle irreducible loop structures giving rise to the divergences, is extended, especially with respect to the limits on the dimension for …
We determine and analyze maximally supersymmetric configurations in four-dimensional gauged N=2 supergravity, preserving eight supercharges. These models include arbitrary electric gaugings in the vector- and hypermultiplet sectors. We present several examples of such solutions and connect some of them to vacuum solutions of flux compactifications in string theory.
Maximally $\mathcal{N}$ extended $2+1$ dimensional flat Supergravity theories exist for a class of super-Poincaré algebras for arbitrary $\mathcal{N}$. They have rich asymptotic structures and contain all interesting topological supergravity solutions in presence of non-trivial holonomy. For the asymptotic symmetry algebra being a suitable flat limit of the superconformal algebra $Osp(\mathcal{N}|2;R)$, we have found the $1+1$ dimensional chiral WZW model as the dual quantum field theory that describes the dynamics of these solutions. In the Hamiltonian analysis, the reduced phase space resemb…
The maximal SO(5) gauged D=7 supergravity is dimensionally reduced to six dimensions yielding a new SO(5) gauged D=6 model. It is shown that, unlike in D=7, the SO(5) gauge coupling constant can be taken to zero to yield the maximally extended supergravity in six dimensions. It is also shown that the limit of D=5 N=4 SU(2)xU(1) gauged supergravity in which the U(1) coupling constant is turned off can be obtained.
Motivated by the new higher D-supergravity solutions on intersecting attractors obtained by Ferrara et al. in [Phys.Rev.D79:065031-2009], we focus in this paper on 8D maximal supergravity with moduli space [SL(3,R)/SO(3)]x[SL(2,R)/SO(2)] and study explicitly the attractor mechanism for various configurations of extremal black p- branes (anti-branes) with the typical near horizon geometries AdS_{p+2}xS^{m}xT^{6-p-m} and p=0,1,2,3,4; 2<=m<=6. Interpretations in terms of wrapped M2 and M5 branes of the 11D M-theory on 3-torus are also given. Keywords: 8D supergravity, black p-branes, attractor me…
We construct maximally supersymmetric gauged N=16 supergravity in three dimensions, thereby obtaining an entirely new class of AdS supergravities. These models are not derivable from any known higher-dimensional theory, indicating the existence of a new type of supergravity beyond D=11. They are expected to be of special importance also for the conjectured AdS/CFT correspondence. One of their noteworthy features is a nonabelian generalization of the duality between scalar and vector fields in three dimensions. Among the possible gauge groups, SO(8)xSO(8) is distinguished as the maximal compact…
We compare the dynamics of maximal three-dimensional gauged supergravity in appropriate truncations with the equations of motion that follow from a one-dimensional E10/K(E10) coset model at the first few levels. The constant embedding tensor, which describes gauge deformations and also constitutes an M-theoretic degree of freedom beyond eleven-dimensional supergravity, arises naturally as an integration constant of the geodesic model. In a detailed analysis, we find complete agreement at the lowest levels. At higher levels there appear mismatches, as in previous studies. We discuss the origin …
The maximal supergravity theory in three dimensions, which has local SO(16) and rigid $E_8$ symmetries, is discussed in a superspace setting starting from an off-shell superconformal structure. The on-shell theory is obtained by imposing further constraints. It is essentially a non-linear sigma model that induces a Poincaré supergeometry that is described in detail. The possible $p$-form field strengths, for $p=2,3,4$, are explicitly constructed using supersymmetry and $E_8$. The gauged theory is also discussed.
We study the general formulation of gauged supergravity in seven dimensions with sixteen supercharges keeping duality covariance by means of the embedding tensor formalism. We first classify all inequivalent duality orbits of consistent deformations. Secondly, we analyse the complete set of critical points in a systematic way. Interestingly, we find the first examples of stable de Sitter solutions within a theory with such a large amount of supersymmetry.
We show that IIA supergravity can be extended with two independent 10-form potentials. These give rise to a single BPS IIA 9-brane. We investigate the bosonic gauge algebra of both IIA and IIB supergravity in the presence of 10-form potentials and point out an intriguing relation with the symmetry algebra $E_{11}$, which has been conjectured to be the underlying symmetry of string theory/M-theory.
We classify the geometry of all supersymmetric IIB backgrounds which admit the maximal number of $G$-invariant Killing spinors. For compact stability subgroups $G=G_2, SU(3)$ and SU(2), the spacetime is locally isometric to a product $X_n\times Y_{10-n}$ with $n=3,4,6$, where $X_n$ is a maximally supersymmetric solution of a $n$-dimensional supergravity theory and $Y_{10-n}$ is a Riemannian manifold with holonomy $G$. For non-compact stability subgroups, $G=K\ltimes\bR^8$, $K=Spin(7)$, SU(4), $Sp(2)$, $SU(2)\times SU(2)$ and $\{1\}$, the spacetime is a pp-wave propagating in an eight-dimension…
The superfield equations of massive IIA supergravity, in the form of constraints on the superspace geometry, are shown to be implied by $κ$-symmetry of the topologically massive D-2-brane.
We construct higher derivative supervertices in an effective theory of maximal supergravity in various dimensions, in the super spinor helicity formalism, and derive non-renormalization conditions on up to 14-derivative order couplings from supersymmetry. These non-renormalization conditions include Laplace type equations on the coefficients of $R^4$, $D^4R^4$, and $D^6R^4$ couplings. We also find additional constraining equations, which are consistent with previously known results in the effective action of toroidally compactified type II string theory, and elucidate many features thereof.
By applying generalized dimensional reduction on the type IIB supersymmetry variations, we derive the supersymmetry variations for the massive 9-dimensional supergravity. We use these variations and the ones for massive type IIA to derive the supersymmetry transformation of the gravitino for the proposed massive 11-dimensional supergravity.
We determine the supersymmetric AdS_7 backgrounds of seven-dimensional half-maximal gauged supergravities and show that they do not admit any deformations that preserve all 16 supercharges. We compare this result to the conformal manifold of the holographically dual (1,0) superconformal field theories and show that accordingly its representation theory implies that no supersymmetric marginal operators exist.
Recently a new maximally supersymmetric, dyonically gauged supergravity in four-dimenions has been constructed. This theory admits several supersymmetric AdS solutions, and a Chern- Simons-matter dual theory has been proposed for a solution with an unbroken SU(3) symmetry. The gravity side and the field theory side of the free energy computation show nice agreements at superconformal point. With a view to a study of non-conformal deformations, in this paper we study a consistent truncation of the full theory where SU(3) is broken to U(1)$^2$. We elucidate the geometry of the scalar sector, and…
Using the duality between color and kinematics, we construct the two- and three-loop amplitudes of half-maximal supergravity with matter multiplets and show that new divergences occur in D=4 and D=5. Bossard, Howe and Stelle have recently conjectured the existence of 16-supercharge off-shell harmonic superspaces in order to explain the ultraviolet finiteness of pure half-maximal supergravity with no matter multiplets in D=4 at three loops and in D=5 at two loops. By assuming the required superspace exists in D=5, they argued that no new divergences should occur at two loops even with the addit…
We perform an exhaustive classification of G_2 invariant extrema of the most general gauged N=8 supergravity in four dimensions. They comprise four branches of Anti-de Sitter solutions labelled by a single parameter. Interestingly, while the gauge groups vary with the parameters, the mass spectra are invariant. One of these is a new non-supersymmetric yet stable point. Our analysis includes the recently proposed family of SO(8) gauged supergravities and more.
We construct the most general gaugings of the maximal D=6 supergravity. The theory is (2,2) supersymmetric, and possesses an on-shell SO(5,5) duality symmetry which plays a key role in determining its couplings. The field content includes 16 vector fields that carry a chiral spinor representation of the duality group. We utilize the embedding tensor method which determines the appropriate combinations of these vectors that participate in gauging of a suitable subgroup of SO(5,5). The construction also introduces the magnetic duals of the 5 two-form potentials and 16 vector fields.
A description of the bosonic sector of ten-dimensional N=1 supergravity as a non-linear realisation is given. We show that if a suitable extension of this theory were invariant under a Kac-Moody algebra, then this algebra would have to contain a rank eleven Kac-Moody algebra, that can be identified to be a particular real form of very-extended D_8. We also describe the extension of N=1 supergravity coupled to an abelian vector gauge field as a non-linear realisation, and find the Kac-Moody algebra governing the symmetries of this theory to be very-extended B_8. Finally, we discuss the related …
From general arguments, we show that one-loop n-point amplitudes in colourless theories satisfy a new type of reduction formula. These lead to the existence of cancellations beyond supersymmetry. Using such reduction relations we prove the no-triangle hypothesis in maximal supergravity by showing that in four dimensions the n-point graviton amplitude contain only scalar box integral functions. We also discuss the reduction formulas in the context of gravity amplitudes with less and no supersymmetry.
We present a new massive theory of superspin Y=3/2 which has non-minimal supergravity as it's massless limit. The new result will illuminate the underlying structure of auxiliary fields required for the description of arbitrary massive half-integer superspin systems.
We obtain the complete non-linear Kaluza-Klein ansatz for the reduction of the bosonic sector of massive type IIA supergravity to the Romans F(4) gauged supergravity in six dimensions. The latter arises as a consistent warped S^4 reduction.

We study a truncation of four-dimensional maximal gauged supergravity that provides a realization of the minimal model of a holographic superconductor. We find various flow solutions in this truncation at zero and finite temperature with a non-trivial profile for the charged scalar. Below a critical temperature we find holographic superconductor solutions that represent the thermodynamically preferred phase. Depending on the choice of boundary conditions, the superconducting phase transition is either first or second order. For vanishing temperature we find a flow with a condensing charged sca…
We consider the D^6 R^4 term which is the leading contribution in the low momentum expansion of the three loop, four graviton amplitude in maximal supergravity. We calculate the moduli dependent coefficient of this term in 11 dimensional supergravity compactified on T^2. Only diagrams that involve the Mercedes skeleton contribute resulting in a compact expression involving an integral over 6 Schwinger parameters. We express this integral as an integral over the moduli of an auxiliary T^3. This includes an SL(3,Z) invariant integral over the shape moduli of the T^3. We discuss the renormalizati…
We describe how one may use either the superPoincaré algebra or the exceptional algebra to construct maximal supergravity theories in the light-cone formalism. The d=4 construction shows both symmetries albeit in a non-linearly realized manner. In d=11, we find that we have to choose which of these two symmetries to use, in constructing the theory. In order to understand the other "unused" symmetry, one has to perform a highly non-trivial field redefinition. We argue that this shows that one cannot trust counterterm arguments that do not take the full symmetry of the theory into account. Final…
We present a description for amplitude diagrams in maximal supergravities obtained by dimensional reduction from D=11, derived from a field theory point of view using the pure spinor formalism. The advantages of this approach are the manifest supersymmetry present in the formalism, and the limited number of interaction terms in the action. Furthermore, we investigate the conditions set by this description in order for amplitudes in maximal supergravity to be finite in the ultraviolet limit. Typically, there is an upper limit to the dimension, set by the loop order, which for an arbitrary numbe…
The forms in D-dimensional (half-)maximal supergravity theories are discussed for 3 $\leq$ D $\leq$ 11. Superspace methods are used to derive consistent sets of Bianchi identities for all the forms for all degrees, and to show that they are soluble and fully compatible with supersymmetry. The Bianchi identities determine Lie superalgebras that can be extended to Borcherds superalgebras of a special type. It is shown that any Borcherds superalgebra of this type gives the same form spectrum, up to an arbitrary degree, as an associated Kac-Moody algebra. For maximal supergravity up to D-form pote…
