In the near future, measurements of metal absorption features in the intergalactic medium (IGM) will become an important constraint on models of the formation and evolution of the earliest galaxies, the properties of the first stars, and the reionization and enrichment of the IGM. The first measurement of a metal abundance in the IGM at a redshift approaching the epoch of reionization already offers intriguing hints. Between z=5.8 and 4.7 (a 0.3 Gyr interval only 1 Gyr after the big bang), the measured density of CIV absorbers in the IGM increased by a factor of ~ 3.5 (Ryan-Weber et al. 2009; Becker, Rauch & Sargent 2009). If these values prove to be accurate, they pose two puzzles: (1) The total amount of CIV at z=5.8 implies too little star formation to reionize the IGM by z=6 or to match the WMAP electron scattering optical depth (tau). (2) The rapid growth from z = 6-5 is faster than the buildup of stellar mass or the increase in the star formation rate density over the same interval. We show that a delay of ~ 0.4-0.7 Gyr between the instantaneous production of ionizing photons and the later production of metal absorption features (added to the delay due to stellar lifetimes) can provide the full explanation for both puzzles. We calculate the delay in metal production due to finite stellar lifetimes alone and find that it is too short to explain the rapid CIV density increase. The additional delay could naturally be explained as the result of ~ 200 km/s outflows carrying carbon to distances of ~ 100 kpc, the typical distance between galaxies and CIV absorbers in enrichment simulations, and the typical outflow or absorption region scale observed at z ~ 2-3.
Because the same massive stars that reionized the intergalactic medium (IGM) inevitably exploded as supernovae that polluted the Universe with metals, the history of cosmic reionization and enrichment are intimately intertwined. While the overly sensitive Ly-alpha transition completely saturates in a neutral IGM, strong low-ionization metal lines like the MgII 2796,2804 doublet will give rise to a detectable `metal-line forest' if the metals produced during reionization (Z ~ 10^{-3}Z_sol) permeate the neutral IGM. We simulate the MgII forest for the first time by combining a large hydrodynamic…
By creating and analyzing the two dimensional gas temperature and abundance maps of the RGH 80 compact galaxy group with the high-quality Chandra data, we detect a high-abundance ($\simeq 0.7$ $Z_\odot$) arc, where the metal abundance is significantly higher than the surrounding regions by $\simeq 0.3$ Z_\odot$. This structure shows tight spatial correlations with the member galaxy PGC 046529, as well as with the arm-like feature identified on the X-ray image in the previous work of Randall et al. (2009). Since no apparent signature of AGN activity is found associated with PGC 046529 in multi-…
Using hydrodynamic simulations we compute the metal enrichment history of the intergalactic medium (IGM). We show that galactic superwind (GSW) feedback can transport metals to the IGM and that the properties of simulated metal absorbers match observations. The distance of influence of GSW is typically limited to >0.5Mpc and within regions of overdensity >10. Most CIV and OVI absorbers are located within shocked regions of elevated temperature (T>2x10^4K), overdensity (>10), and metallicity ([-2.5,-0.5]). OVI absorbers have typically higher metallicity, lower density and higher temperature tha…
We investigate the large-scale influence of outflows from AGNs in enriching the IGM with metals in a cosmological context. We combine cosmological simulations of large scale structure formation with a detailed model of metal enrichment, in which outflows expand anisotropically along the direction of least resistance, distributing metals into the IGM. The metals carried by the outflows are generated by two separate stellar populations: stars located near the central AGN, and stars located in the greater galaxy. Using this algorithm, we performed a series of 5 simulations of the propagation of A…
We study cosmic metal enrichment via AMR hydrodynamical simulations in a (10 Mpc/h)$^3$ volume following the Pop III-Pop II transition and for different Pop III IMFs. We have analyzed the joint evolution of metal enrichment on galactic and intergalactic scales at z=6 and z=4. Galaxies account for <9% of the baryonic mass; the remaining gas resides in the diffuse phases: (a) voids, i.e. regions with extremely low density ($Δ$<1), (b) the true intergalactic medium (IGM, 1<$Δ$<10) and (c) the circumgalactic medium (CGM, 10<$Δ<10^{2.5}$), the interface between the IGM and galaxies. By z=6 a galact…
We present the results of the largest survey to date for intergalactic metals at redshifts z > 5, using near-IR spectra of nine QSOs with emission redshifts z(em) > 5.7. We find, for the first time, a change in the comoving mass density of C IV ions as we look back to redshifts z > 5. At a mean <z> = 5.76, we deduce Omega(C IV)=(4.4+/-2.6)x10^(-9) which implies a drop by a factor of about 3.5 compared to the value at z < 4.7, after accounting for the differing sensitivities of different surveys. The observed number of C IV doublets is also lower by a similar factor, compared to expectations fo…
We use a suite of cosmological, hydrodynamical simulations to investigate the chemical enrichment history of the Universe. Specifically, we trace the origin of the metals back in time to investigate when various gas phases were enriched and by what halo masses. We find that the age of the metals decreases strongly with the density of the gas in which they end up. At least half of the metals that reside in the diffuse intergalactic medium (IGM) at redshift zero (two) were ejected from galaxies above redshift two (three). The mass of the haloes that last contained the metals increases rapidly wi…

A study of the IGM metal enrichment using a series of SPH simulations is presented, employing metal cooling and turbulent diffusion of metals and thermal energy. An adiabatic feedback mechanism was adopted where gas cooling was prevented to generate galactic winds without explicit wind particles. The simulations produced a cosmic star formation history (SFH) that is broadly consistent with observations until z $\sim$ 0.5, and a steady evolution of the universal neutral hydrogen fraction ($Ω_{\rm H I}$). At z=0, about 40% of the baryons are in the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM), but most …
We combine an analytic model for anisotropic outflows and galaxy formation with numerical simulations of large-scale structure and halo formation to study the impact of galactic outflows on the evolution of the IGM. We have simulated the evolution of a comoving volume (15 Mpc)^3 in the LCDM universe. We follow the formation of 20000-60000 galaxies and simulate the galactic outflows produced by these galaxies, for five outflow opening angles, alpha=60, 90, 120, 150, and 180 degrees (isotropic outflows). Anisotropic outflows follow the path of least resistance and thus travel preferentially into…
We present the results of observations taken with the X-shooter spectrograph devoted to the study of quasars at z ~ 6. This paper focuses on the properties of metals at high redshift traced, in particular, by the C IV doublet absorption systems. Six objects were observed with resolutions ~27 and 34 km/s in the visual, and 37.5 and 53.5 km/s in the near infrared. We detected 102 C IV lines in the range: 4.35 < z < 6.2 of which 27 are above z ~ 5. Thanks to the characteristics of resolution and spectral coverage of X-shooter, we could also detect 25 Si IV doublets associated with the C IV at z>5…
IGM metal absorption lines observed in z>6 spectra offer the opportunity to probe early feedback processes, the nature of enriching sources, and the topology of reionization. We run high-resolution cosmological simulations including galactic outflows to study the observability and physical properties of 5 ions (C II, C IV, O I, Si II, Si IV) in absorption between z=8->5. We apply three cases for ionization conditions: Fully neutral, fully reionized, and a patchy model based on the flux from the nearest galaxy. We find that our simulations broadly fit available z~5-6 IGM metal-line data, althou…
The epoch of reionization and formation of first stars are inter-linked topics that are of considerable interest. We use a simplified approach for studying formation of stars in collapsed haloes, and the resulting ionization of the inter-galactic medium (IGM). We consider a set of LCDM models allowed by observations of CMB temperature and polarization anisotropies for this study. We constrain parameters related to star formation with the help of observations. We constrain subsets of these parameters independently by using the observed metallicity of the inter-galactic medium at z ~ 5 and the r…
We have measured redshifts for 243 z ~3 quasars in nine VLT VIMOS LBG redshift survey areas, each of which is centred on a known bright quasar. Using spectra of these quasars, we measure the cross-correlation between neutral hydrogen gas causing the Lya forest and 1020 Lyman-break galaxies at z ~3. We find an increase in neutral hydrogen absorption within 5 h^-1 Mpc of a galaxy in agreement with the results of Adelberger et al. (2003, 2005). The Lya-LBG cross-correlation can be described by a power-law on scales larger than 3 h^-1 Mpc. When galaxy velocity dispersions are taken into account ou…
We find a bright (L_{UV}=2.5 L*_{z=6}) Lyman alpha emitter at redshift z=5.719 at a projected distance of 79 physical kpc from a strong triply ionized carbon (Civ) absorption system at redshift z=5.7238 previously reported in the spectrum of the z_{em} = 6.309 QSO SDSS J1030+0524. This is the highest redshift galaxy-absorber pair detected to-date, supporting the idea that galaxy-wide outflows were already in place at the end of the epoch of reionization. The proximity of this object makes it the most likely source of metals, consistent with models of outflows at lower redshift where significan…
We present a theoretical study of intergalactic metal absorption lines imprinted in the spectra of distant quasars during and after the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). We use high resolution hydrodynamical simulations at high redshift ($4 <z<8$), assuming a uniform UV background Haardt--Madau 12, post-processing with CLOUDY photoionization models and Voigt profile fitting to accurately calculate column densities of the ions CII, CIV, SiII, SiIV and OI in the intergalactic medium (IGM). In addition, we generate mock observations of neutral Hydrogen (HI) at $z<6$. Our simulations successfully repro…
We have vastly increased the CIV statistics at intermediate redshift by surveying the thousands of quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data-Release 7. We visually verified over 16,000 CIV systems with 1.46 < z < 4.55---a sample size that renders Poisson error negligible. Detailed Monte Carlo simulations show we are approximately 50% complete down to rest equivalent widths W_r ~ 0.6 Å. We analyzed the sample as a whole and in ten small redshift bins with approximately 1500 doublets each. The equivalent width frequency distributions f(W_r) were well modeled by an exponential, with little evo…
We investigate the metallicity evolution and content of the intergalactic medium (IGM) and galactic halo gas from z=2->0 using 110-million particle cosmological hydrodynamic simulations. We focus on the detectability and physical properties of UV resonance metal-line absorbers observable with Hubble's Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS). We confirm that galactic superwind outflows are required to enrich the IGM to observed levels down to z=0 using three wind prescriptions contrasted to a no-wind simulation. Our favoured momentum-conserved wind prescription deposits metals closer to galaxies owin…
We present tomography of the circum-galactic metal distribution at redshift 1.7 to 4.5 derived from echellete spectroscopy of binary quasars. We find CIV systems at similar redshifts in paired sightlines more often than expected for sightline-independent redshifts. As the separation of the sightlines increases from 36 kpc to 907 kpc, the amplitude of this clustering decreases. At the largest separations, the CIV systems cluster similar to Lyman-break galaxies (Adelberger et al. 2005a). The CIV systems are significantly less correlated than these galaxies, however, at separations less than R_1 …
We explore high-redshift gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) as promising tools to probe pre-galactic metal enrichment. We utilize the bright afterglow of a Pop III GRB exploding in a primordial dwarf galaxy as a luminous background source, and calculate the strength of metal absorption lines that are imprinted by the first heavy elements in the intergalactic medium (IGM). To derive the GRB absorption line diagnostics, we use an existing highly-resolved simulation of the formation of a first galaxy which is characterized by the onset of atomic hydrogen cooling in a halo with virial temperature >10^4 K. We…
We present a model to self-consistently describe the joint evolution of starburst galaxies and the galactic wind resulting from this evolution. We combine the population synthesis code Starburst99 with a semi-analytical model of galactic outflows and a model for the distribution and abundances of chemical elements inside the outflows. Starting with a galaxy mass, formation redshift, and adopting a particular form for the star formation rate, we describe the evolution of the stellar populations in the galaxy, the evolution of the metallicity and chemical composition of the interstellar medium (…
In this work, we investigate the abundance and distribution of metals in the intergalactic medium (IGM) at $\langle z \rangle \simeq 2.8$ through the analysis of an ultra-high signal-to-noise ratio UVES spectrum of the quasar HE0940-1050. In the CIV forest, our deep spectrum is sensitive at $3\,σ$ to lines with column density down to $\log N_{\rm CIV} \simeq 11.4$ and in 60 per cent of the considered redshift range down to $\simeq11.1$. In our sample, all HI lines with $\log N_{\rm HI} \ge 14.8$ show an associated CIV absorption. In the range $14.0 \le \log N_{\rm HI} <14.8$, 43 per cent of HI…
The first primitive galaxies formed from accretion and mergers by z ~ 15, and were primarily responsible for cosmological reionization and the chemical enrichment of the early cosmos. But a few of these galaxies may have formed in the presence of strong Lyman-Werner UV fluxes that sterilized them of H_2, preventing them from forming stars or expelling heavy elements into the IGM prior to assembly. At masses of 10^8 Ms and virial temperatures of 10^4 K, these halos began to rapidly cool by atomic lines, perhaps forming 10^4 - 10^6 Ms Pop III stars and, later, the seeds of supermassive black hol…
We present a theoretical model to predict the properties of an observed $z =$ 5.72 Lyman $α$ emitter galaxy - CIV absorption pair separated by 1384 comoving kpc/h. We use the separation of the pair and an outflow velocity/time travelling argument to demonstrate that the observed galaxy cannot be the source of metals for the CIV absorber. We find a plausible explanation for the metal enrichment in the context of our simulations: a dwarf galaxy with $M_{\star} =$ 1.87 $\times$ 10$^{9} M_{\odot}$ located 119 comoving kpc/h away with a wind velocity of $\sim$ 100 km/s launched at $z \sim$ 7. Such …
Damped Ly-alpha absorbers (DLAs) can be used to measure gas-phase metallicities at large cosmological lookback times with high precision. Relative abundances can still be measured accurately deep into the reionization epoch (z > 6) using transitions redward of Ly-alpha. Here we study chemical evolution of DLAs using a constrained model for evolution of galaxies and IGM to determine the degree to which DLA abundance measurements can probe Population III enrichment. We find that if the critical metallicity of Population III to II transition is < 10^-4 Zsun, the cosmic Population III SFR is zero …
The origin and the magnitude of the inter-galactic magnetic field is of primordial importance in the global picture of magnetic field evolution, as it is considered to be the missing link between galactic magnetic fields and cluster magnetic fields on much larger scales. We are testing whether dwarf galaxies are good candidates to explain the enrichment of the IGM: after their discs form and trigger galactic dynamos, supernova feedback will launch strong winds, expelling magnetic field lines in the IGM. We have performed MHD simulations of an isolated dwarf galaxy, forming self-consistently in…
We utilize the hydrodynamic and N-body code {\small GIZMO} coupled with our newly developed sub-grid Population~III (Pop~III) Legacy model, designed specifically for cosmological volume simulations, to study the baseline metal enrichment from Pop~III star formation at $z>7$. In this idealized numerical experiment, we only consider Pop~III star formation. We find that our model Pop~III star formation rate density (SFRD), which peaks at $\sim 10^{-3}\ {\rm M_\odot yr^{-1} Mpc^{-1}}$ near $z\sim10$, agrees well with previous numerical studies and is consistent with the observed estimates for Pop~…
We present a simple, redshift-independent analytic model that explains the local Fundamental Metallicity Relation (FMR), taking into account the physical processes of star formation, inflow of metal-poor intergalactic medium (IGM) gas, and the outflow of metal rich interstellar medium (ISM) gas. We show that the physics of the FMR can be summarised as follows: for massive galaxies with stellar mass M_* >= 10^11 solar masses, ISM metal enrichment due to star formation is compensated by inflow of metal poor IGM gas, leading to a constant value of the gas metallicity with star formation rate (SFR…
We present a comprehensive catalog of ultraviolet HST/STIS and FUSE absorbers in the low-redshift IGM at z<0.4. The catalog draws from the extensive literature on IGM absorption, and it reconciles discrepancies among previous catalogs through a critical evaluation of all reported absorption features in light of new HST/COS data. We report on 746 HI absorbers down to a rest-frame equivalent width of 12 milliAngstroms over a maximum redshift path length Deltaz=5.38. We also confirm 111 OVI absorbers, 29 CIV absorbers, and numerous absorption features due to other metal ions. We characterize the …
Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are characterized by a clear correlation between luminosity and metallicity (L_AGN-Z_AGN relation). The origin of this correlation is not clear. It may result from a relation between the black hole mass (M_BH) and metallicity, or from a relation between the accretion rate (L/L_Edd) and metallicity. To investigate the origin of the L_AGN-Z_AGN relation, we use optical spectra of 2383 quasars at 2.3 < z < 3.0 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. By using this data set, we have constructed composite spectra of 33 subsamples in intervals of both M_BH and L/L_Edd. From t…
Models of galaxy formation in a CDM universe predict that massive galaxies are surrounded by a hot, quasi-hydrostatic circumgalactic corona of slowly cooling gas, predominantly accreted from the IGM. This prediction is borne out by the cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of Crain et al., which reproduce scaling relations between the X-ray and optical properties of nearby disc galaxies. Such coronae are metal poor, but observations of the X-ray emitting circumgalactic medium (CGM) of local galaxies typically indicate enrichment to near-solar iron abundance, potentially signalling a shortcom…
[Abridged] We investigate how a range of physical processes affect the cosmic metal distribution using a suite of cosmological, hydrodynamical simulations. Focusing on z = 0 and 2, we study the metallicities and metal mass fractions for stars as well as for the ISM, and several more diffuse gas phases. We vary the cooling rates, star formation law, structure of the ISM, galactic winds, feedback from AGN, reionization history, stellar IMF, and cosmology. In all models stars and the warm-hot IGM (WHIM) constitute the dominant repository of metals, while for z > 2 the ISM is also important. In mo…
From the first stages of star and galaxy formation, non-gravitational processes such as ram pressure stripping, SNs, galactic winds, AGNs, galaxy-galaxy mergers, etc... lead to the enrichment of the IGM in stars, metals as well as dust, via the ejection of galactic material into the IGM. We know now that these processes shape, side by side with gravitation, the formation and the evolution of structures. We present here hydrodynamic simulations of structure formation implementing the effect of the cooling by dust on large scale structure formation. We focus on the scale of galaxy clusters and s…
Recently, Planck measured a value of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) optical depth due to electron scattering of $τ=0.066 \pm 0.016$. Here we show that this low value leaves essentially no room for an early partial reionisation of the intergalactic medium (IGM) by high-redshift Population III (Pop III) stars, expected to have formed in low-mass minihaloes. We perform semi-analytic calculations of reionisation which include the contribution from Pop II stars in atomic cooling haloes, calibrated with high-redshift galaxy observations, and Pop III stars in minihaloes with feedback due to Ly…
Low ionization metal absorption due to OI has been identified as an important probe of the physical state of the inter-/circumgalactic medium at the tail-end of reionization. We use here high-resolution hydrodynamic simulations to interpret the incidence rate of OI absorbers at z~6 as observed by Becker et al. (2011). We infer weak OI absorbers (EW > 0.1 A) to have typical HI column densities in the range of sub-DLAs, densities of 80 times the mean baryonic density and metallicities of about 1/500 th solar. This is similar to the metallicity inferred at similar overdensities at z~3, suggesting…
Population III star formation during the dark ages shifted from minihalos (~10^6 Msun) cooled via molecular hydrogen to more massive halos (~10^8 Msun) cooled via Ly-alpha as Lyman-Werner backgrounds progressively quenched molecular hydrogen cooling. Eventually, both modes of primordial star formation were suppressed by the chemical enrichment of the IGM. We present a comprehensive model for following the modes of Population III star formation that is based on a combination of analytical calculations and cosmological simulations. We characterize the properties of the transition from metal-free…
Cosmic metal enrichment is one of the key physical processes regulating galaxy formation and the evolution of the intergalactic medium (IGM). However, determining the metal content of the most distant galaxies has proven so far almost impossible; also, absorption line experiments at $z\sim6$ become increasingly difficult because of instrumental limitations and the paucity of background quasars. With the advent of ALMA, far-infrared emission lines provide a novel tool to study early metal enrichment. Among these, the [CII] line at 157.74 $μ$m is the most luminous line emitted by the interstella…
In order to assess the contribution of Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) and Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs) at redshifts 3<z<7 to the ionization of intergalactic medium (IGM), we investigate the escape fractions of ionizing photons from supernova-dominated primordial galaxies by solving the three-dimensional radiative transfer. The model galaxy is employed from an ultra-high-resolution chemodynamic simulation of a primordial galaxy by Mori & Umemura (2006),which well reproduces the observed properties of LAEs and LBGs. The total mass of model galaxy is 10^{11}M_sun. We solve not only photo-ionization b…
Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most luminous electromagnetic explosions in the Universe, which emit up to $8.8\times10^{54}$ erg isotropic equivalent energy in the hard X-ray band. The high luminosity makes them detectable out to the largest distances yet explored in the Universe. GRBs, as bright beacons in the deep Universe, would be the ideal tool to probe the properties of high-redshift universe: including the cosmic expansion and dark energy, star formation rate, the reionization epoch and the metal enrichment history of the Universe. In this article, we review the luminosity correlations…
Using Voigt-profile-fitting procedures on Keck HIRES spectra of nine QSOs we identify 1099 CIV absorber components clumped in 201 systems outside the Lyman forest over 1.6 < z < 4.4. With associated SiIV, CII, SiII and NV where available we investigate bulk statistical and ionization properties of the components and systems and find no significant change in redshift for CIV and SiIV while CII, SiII and NV change substantially. The CIV components exhibit strong clustering but no clustering is detected for systems on scales from 150 km/s out to 50000 km/s. We conclude the clustering is due entir…
Observations of quasar absorption line systems reveal that the z=3 intergalactic medium (IGM) is polluted by heavy elements down to HI optical depths tau_HI<<10. What is not yet clear, however, is what fraction of the volume needs to be enriched by metals and whether it suffices to enrich only regions close to galaxies in order to reproduce the observations. We use gas density fields derived from large cosmological simulations, together with synthetic quasar spectra and imposed, model metal distributions to investigate what enrichment patterns can reproduce the observed median optical depth of…
To investigate the evolution of dust in a cosmological volume, we perform hydrodynamic simulations, in which the enrichment of metals and dust is treated self-consistently with star formation and stellar feedback. We consider dust evolution driven by dust production in stellar ejecta, dust destruction by sputtering, grain growth by accretion and coagulation, and grain disruption by shattering, and treat small and large grains separately to trace the grain size distribution. After confirming that our model nicely reproduces the observed relation between dust-to-gas ratio and metallicity for nea…
(Abridged) We explore new observationally-constrained sub-resolution models of galactic outflows and investigate their impact on the circumgalactic medium (CGM) over redshifts z = 2 - 4. We perform cosmological hydrodynamic simulations, including star formation, chemical enrichment, and four cases of SNe-driven outflows: no wind (NW), an energy-driven constant velocity wind (CW), a radially varying wind (RVWa) where the outflow velocity has a positive correlation with galactocentric distance (r), and a RVW with additional dependence on halo mass (RVWb). Overall, we find that the outflows expel…
