The epoch of reionization and formation of first stars are inter-linked topics that are of considerable interest. We use a simplified approach for studying formation of stars in collapsed haloes, and the resulting ionization of the inter-galactic medium (IGM). We consider a set of LCDM models allowed by observations of CMB temperature and polarization anisotropies for this study. We constrain parameters related to star formation with the help of observations. We constrain subsets of these parameters independently by using the observed metallicity of the inter-galactic medium at z ~ 5 and the requirement that the Thomson scattering optical depth due to an ionized IGM as determined for the model from CMB observations be reproduced. We consider a range of initial metalicities for star forming gas, and some variations of the initial mass function of stars. We find that a "normal" initial mass function (IMF) may satisfy these two constraints with a raised efficiency of star formation as compared to that seen in the local universe. Observations require a significant fraction of metals to escape from haloes to the IGM. We can also place constraints on the ratio of escape fraction for metals and ionizing photons, we find that this ratio is of order unity for most models. This highlights the importance of using the constraints arising from enrichment of the inter-galactic medium. (Abridged)
Because the same massive stars that reionized the intergalactic medium (IGM) inevitably exploded as supernovae that polluted the Universe with metals, the history of cosmic reionization and enrichment are intimately intertwined. While the overly sensitive Ly-alpha transition completely saturates in a neutral IGM, strong low-ionization metal lines like the MgII 2796,2804 doublet will give rise to a detectable `metal-line forest' if the metals produced during reionization (Z ~ 10^{-3}Z_sol) permeate the neutral IGM. We simulate the MgII forest for the first time by combining a large hydrodynamic…
We present a new semi-analytic model of the formation of the first stars. Our method takes dark matter halo merger trees (including 3-dimensional spatial information) from cosmological N-body simulations as input and applies analytic prescriptions to compute both the Population III (Pop III) and metal-enriched star formation histories. We have developed a novel method to accurately compute the major feedback processes affecting Pop III star formation: H$_2$ photodissociation from Lyman-Werner (LW) radiation, suppression of star formation due to inhomogeneous reionization, and metal enrichment …
Quasars are powerful systems whose spectrum is rich of metal features that allow us to investigate the chemical evolution of galaxies at very high redshift, even close to the reionization epoch. I review the main observational constraints on the metallicity of quasars host galaxies at high redshift and discuss the implications and issues for models of galaxy evolution in the early universe.
We develop a model for stochastic pre-enrichment and self-enrichment in globular clusters (GCs) during their formation process. GCs beginning their formation have an initial metallicity determined by the pre-enrichment of their surrounding protocloud, but can also undergo internal self-enrichment during formation. Stochastic variations in metallicity arise because of the finite numbers of supernova. We construct an analytic formulation of the combined effects of pre-enrichment and self-enrichment and use Monte Carlo models to verify that the model accurately encapsulates the mean metallicity a…
Overdense, metal-rich regions, shielded from stellar radiation might remain neutral throughout reionization and produce metal as well as 21 cm absorption lines. Simultaneous absorption from metals and 21 cm can complement each other as probes of underlying gas properties. We use Aurora, a suite of high resolution radiation-hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation, to investigate the occurrence of such "aligned" absorbers. We calculate absorption spectra for 21 cm, OI, CII, SiII and FeII. We find velocity windows with absorption from at least one metal and 21 cm, and classify the aligned …
[abridged] The First Stars in the Universe form out of pristine primordial gas clouds that have been radiatively cooled to a few hundreds of degrees Kelvin either via molecular or atomic (Lyman-Alpha) hydrogen lines. This primordial mode of star formation is eventually quenched once radiative and/or chemical (metal enrichment) feedbacks mark the transition to Population II stars. In this paper we present a model for the formation rate of Population III stars based on Press-Schechter modeling coupled with analytical recipes for gas cooling and radiative feedback. Our model also includes a novel…
We use Chandra X-ray data to measure the metallicity of the intracluster medium (ICM) in 245 massive galaxy clusters selected from X-ray and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect surveys, spanning redshifts $0<z<1.2$. Metallicities were measured in three different radial ranges, spanning cluster cores through their outskirts. We explore trends in these measurements as a function of cluster redshift, temperature, and surface brightness "peakiness" (a proxy for gas cooling efficiency in cluster centers). The data at large radii (0.5--1 $r_{500}$) are consistent with a constant metallicity, while at int…
We demonstrate that high abundances of water vapor could have existed in extremely low metallicity ($10^{-3}$ solar) partially shielded gas, during the epoch of first metal enrichment of the interstellar medium of galaxies at high redshifts.
Binary stars are abundant in nearby galaxies, but are typically unaccounted for in simulations of the high redshift Universe. Stellar population synthesis models that include the effects of binary evolution result in greater relative abundances of ionizing photons that could significantly affect the ambient ionizing background during the epoch of hydrogen reionization, additionally leading to differences in galaxy gas content and star formation. We use hydrodynamic cosmological simulations including in situ multifrequency radiative transfer to evaluate the effects of a high binary fraction in …
The emergence of the first sources of light at redshifts of z ~ 10-30 signaled the transition from the simple initial state of the Universe to one of increasing complexity. We review recent progress in our understanding of the formation of the first stars and galaxies, starting with cosmological initial conditions, primordial gas cooling, and subsequent collapse and fragmentation. We emphasize the important open question of how the pristine gas was enriched with heavy chemical elements in the wake of the first supernovae. We conclude by discussing how the chemical abundance patterns conceivabl…
We utilize the hydrodynamic and N-body code {\small GIZMO} coupled with our newly developed sub-grid Population~III (Pop~III) Legacy model, designed specifically for cosmological volume simulations, to study the baseline metal enrichment from Pop~III star formation at $z>7$. In this idealized numerical experiment, we only consider Pop~III star formation. We find that our model Pop~III star formation rate density (SFRD), which peaks at $\sim 10^{-3}\ {\rm M_\odot yr^{-1} Mpc^{-1}}$ near $z\sim10$, agrees well with previous numerical studies and is consistent with the observed estimates for Pop~…
In this paper, we study the chemical properties of the stars in the dwarf satellites around the MW-like host galaxies, and explore the possible effects of several baryonic processes, including supernova (SN) feedback, the reionization of the universe and H$_2$ cooling, on them and how current and future observations may put some constraints on these processes. We use a semi-analytical model to generate MW-like galaxies, for which a fiducial model can reproduce the luminosity function and the stellar metallicity--stellar mass correlation of the MW dwarfs. Using the simulated MW-like galaxies, w…
We present detailed radiative transfer simulations of the reionization history of the Milky Way by metal-poor globular clusters. We identify potential metal-poor globular cluster candidates within the Aquarius simulation using dark matter halo velocity dispersions. We calculate the local ionization fields via a photon-conserving, three dimensional non-equilibrium chemistry code and allow the model to propagate through to the present day. The key feature of the model is that globular cluster formation is suppressed if the local gas is ionized. We find that our spatial treatment of the ionizatio…
Cosmological simulations of Population III star formation suggest an initial mass function (IMF) biased toward very massive stars (M>100Msun) formed in minihalos at redshift z>20, when the cooling is driven by molecular hydrogen. However, this result conflicts with observations of extremely-metal poor (EMP) stars in the Milky Way halo, whose r-process elemental abundances appear to be incompatible with those expected from very massive Population III progenitors. We propose a new solution to the problem in which the IMF of second-generation stars formed at z>10, before reionization, is deficien…
We interpret observations of intergalactic low ionisation metal absorption systems at redshifts z $\gtrsim$5 in terms of pressure-confined clouds. We find clouds confined by the expected pressure of galactic haloes with masses $11<\log M_h/h^{-1}M_\odot<12$ provide a good description of the column density ratios between low ionisation metal absorbers. Some of the ratios, however, require extending conventional radiative transfer models of irradiated slabs to spherical (or cylindrical) clouds to allow for lines of sight passing outside the cores of the clouds. Moderate depletion of silicon onto…
Studies of the formation of the first stars have established that they formed in small halos of $\sim 10^5 - 10^6 M_{\odot}$ via molecular hydrogen cooling. Since a low level of ultraviolet radiation from stars suffices to dissociate molecular hydrogen, under the usually-assumed scenario this primordial mode of star formation ended by redshift $z \sim 15$ and much more massive halos came to dominate star formation. However, metal enrichment from the first stars may have allowed the smaller halos to continue to form stars. In this Letter we explore the possible effect of star formation in metal…
Determining when and how the first galaxies reionized the intergalactic medium (IGM) promises to shed light on both the nature of the first objects and the cosmic history of baryons. Towards this goal, quasar absorption lines play a unique role by probing the properties of diffuse gas on galactic and intergalactic scales. In this review we examine the multiple ways in which absorption lines trace the connection between galaxies and the IGM near the reionization epoch. We first describe how the Ly$α$ forest is used to determine the intensity of the ionizing ultraviolet background and the global…
We present a theoretical study of intergalactic metal absorption lines imprinted in the spectra of distant quasars during and after the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). We use high resolution hydrodynamical simulations at high redshift ($4 <z<8$), assuming a uniform UV background Haardt--Madau 12, post-processing with CLOUDY photoionization models and Voigt profile fitting to accurately calculate column densities of the ions CII, CIV, SiII, SiIV and OI in the intergalactic medium (IGM). In addition, we generate mock observations of neutral Hydrogen (HI) at $z<6$. Our simulations successfully repro…
Metals from Population III (Pop III) supernovae led to the formation of less massive Pop II stars in the early universe, altering the course of evolution of primeval galaxies and cosmological reionization. There are a variety of scenarios in which heavy elements from the first supernovae were taken up into second-generation stars, but cosmological simulations only model them on the largest scales. We present small-scale, high-resolution simulations of the chemical enrichment of a primordial halo by a nearby supernova after partial evaporation by the progenitor star. We find that ejecta from th…
Aim: We establish the mean metallicity from high-resolution spectroscopy for the recently found dwarf spheroidal galaxy Bootes I and test whether it is a common feature for ultra-faint dwarf spheroidal galaxies to show signs of inhomogeneous chemical evolution (e.g. as found in the Hercules dwarf spheroidal galaxy). Methods: We analyse high-resolution, moderate signal-to-noise spectra for seven red giant stars in the Bootes I dSph galaxy using standard abundance analysis techniques. In particular, we assume local thermodynamic equilibrium and employ spherical model atmospheres and codes that t…
A study of the IGM metal enrichment using a series of SPH simulations is presented, employing metal cooling and turbulent diffusion of metals and thermal energy. An adiabatic feedback mechanism was adopted where gas cooling was prevented to generate galactic winds without explicit wind particles. The simulations produced a cosmic star formation history (SFH) that is broadly consistent with observations until z $\sim$ 0.5, and a steady evolution of the universal neutral hydrogen fraction ($Ω_{\rm H I}$). At z=0, about 40% of the baryons are in the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM), but most …
I review recent progress and challenges in studies of the earliest galaxies, seen when the Universe was less than 1 billion years old. Can they be used as reliable tracers of the physics of cosmic reionization thereby complementing other, more direct, probes of the evolving neutrality of the intergalactic medium? Were star-forming galaxies the primary agent in the reionization process and what are the future prospects for identifying the earliest systems devoid of chemical enrichment? Ambitious future facilities are under construction for exploring galaxies and the intergalactic medium in the …
Exploiting a fundamental characteristic of galaxy assembly in the ΛCDM paradigm, the observed spatial biasing and kinematics of metal-poor globular star clusters are used to constrain the local reionization epoch around individual galaxies. Selecting three galaxies located in different environments, the first attempt at constraining the environmental propagation of reionization in the local Universe is carried out. The joint constraint from the three galaxies (z_reion = 10.5^{+1.0}_{-0.9}) agrees remarkably well with the latest WMAP constraint on z_reion for a simple instantaneous reionization…
In this paper, we obtain the NIRB and SBGWs from the early stars, which are constrained by the observation of reionization and star formation rate. We study the transition from Pop III to Pop II stars via the star formation model of different population, which takes into account the reionization and the metal enrichment evolution. We calculate the two main metal pollution channels arising from the supernova-driven protogalactic outflows and "genetic channel". We obtain the SFRs of Pop III and Pop II and their NIRB and SBGWs radiation. We predict that the upper limit of metallicity in metal-enr…
We report the discovery of Serenity-18, a galaxy at z=5.939 for which we could measure the content of molecular gas, M(H_2)~ 5 x10^9 M_sun, traced by the CO(6-5) emission, together with the metal-poor ([Fe/H]=-3.08 +- 0.12, [Si/H]=-2.86 +- 0.14) gas clump/filament which is possibly feeding its growth. The galaxy has an estimated star formation rate of ~100 M_sun yr^{-1}, implying that it is a typical main sequence galaxy at these redshifts. The metal-poor gas is detected through a damped Lyman-alpha absorber (DLA) observed at a spatial separation of 40 kpc and at the same redshift of Serenity-…
We use observations of spatially-aligned C II, C IV, Si II, Si IV, and O I absorbers to probe the slope and intensity of the ultraviolet background (UVB) at $z \sim 6$. We accomplish this by comparing observations with predictions from a cosmological hydrodynamic simulation using three trial UVBs applied in post-processing: a spectrally soft, fluctuating UVB calculated using multi-frequency radiative transfer; a soft, spatially-uniform UVB; and a hard, spatially-uniform "quasars-only" model. When considering our paired high-ionization absorbers (C IV/Si IV), the observed statistics strongly pr…
We present the Technicolor Dawn simulations, a suite of cosmological radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of the first 1.2 billion years. By modeling a spatially-inhomogeneous UVB on-the-fly with 24 frequencies and resolving dark matter halos down to $10^8 M_\odot$ within 12 $h^{-1}$ Mpc volumes, our simulations unify observations of the intergalactic and circumgalactic media, galaxies, and reionization into a common framework. The only empirically-tuned parameter, the fraction $f_{\mathrm{esc,gal}}(z)$ of ionizing photons that escape the interstellar medium, is adjusted to match observations of…
The tight relation of star formation with molecular gas indicated by observations and assumed in recent models implies that the efficiency with which galaxies convert their gas into stars depends on gas metallicity. This is because the abundance of molecular hydrogen is sensitive to the abundance of dust, which catalyzes the formation of H_2 and helps to shield it from dissociating radiation. In this study we point out that in the absence of significant pre-enrichment by Population III stars forming out of zero metallicity gas, such H_2-based star formation is expected to leave an imprint in t…
We use a suite of cosmological, hydrodynamical simulations to investigate the chemical enrichment history of the Universe. Specifically, we trace the origin of the metals back in time to investigate when various gas phases were enriched and by what halo masses. We find that the age of the metals decreases strongly with the density of the gas in which they end up. At least half of the metals that reside in the diffuse intergalactic medium (IGM) at redshift zero (two) were ejected from galaxies above redshift two (three). The mass of the haloes that last contained the metals increases rapidly wi…
In the near future, measurements of metal absorption features in the intergalactic medium (IGM) will become an important constraint on models of the formation and evolution of the earliest galaxies, the properties of the first stars, and the reionization and enrichment of the IGM. The first measurement of a metal abundance in the IGM at a redshift approaching the epoch of reionization already offers intriguing hints. Between z=5.8 and 4.7 (a 0.3 Gyr interval only 1 Gyr after the big bang), the measured density of CIV absorbers in the IGM increased by a factor of ~ 3.5 (Ryan-Weber et al. 2009; …
Population III star formation during the dark ages shifted from minihalos (~10^6 Msun) cooled via molecular hydrogen to more massive halos (~10^8 Msun) cooled via Ly-alpha as Lyman-Werner backgrounds progressively quenched molecular hydrogen cooling. Eventually, both modes of primordial star formation were suppressed by the chemical enrichment of the IGM. We present a comprehensive model for following the modes of Population III star formation that is based on a combination of analytical calculations and cosmological simulations. We characterize the properties of the transition from metal-free…
Outflows from active galactic nuclei may be produced by absorption of continuum radiation by UV resonance lines of abundant metal ions, as observed in broad absorption line quasars (BALQs). The radiation pressure exerted on the metal ions is coupled to the rest of the gas through Coulomb collisions of the metal ions. We calculate the photon density and gas density which allow decoupling of the metal ions from the rest of the gas. These conditions may lead to an outflow composed mostly of the metal ions. We derive a method to constrain the metals/H ratio of observed UV outflows, based on the Ly…
We present a study of the effect of AGN feedback on metal enrichment and thermal properties of the intracluster medium (ICM) in hydrodynamical simulations. The cosmological simulations are performed for a set of clusters using a version of the TreePM-SPH Gadget code that follows chemo-dynamical evolution by accounting for metal enrichment by different stellar populations. Besides runs not including any efficient form of energy feedback, we carry out simulations including: (i) kinetic feedback in the form of galactic winds triggered by supernova explosions; (ii) AGN feedback from gas accretion …
We investigate the history of galactic feedback and chemical enrichment within a sample of 15 X-ray bright groups of galaxies, on the basis of the inferred Fe and Si distributions in the hot gas and the associated metal masses produced by core-collapse and type Ia supernovae (SN). Most of these cool-core groups show a central Fe and Si excess, which can be explained by prolonged enrichment by SN Ia and stellar winds in the central early-type galaxy alone, but with tentative evidence for additional processes contributing to core enrichment in hotter groups. Inferred metal mass-to-light ratios i…
We present the analysis of deep X-ray observations of 10 massive galaxy clusters at redshifts $1.05 < z < 1.71$, with the primary goal of measuring the metallicity of the intracluster medium (ICM) at intermediate radii, to better constrain models of the metal enrichment of the intergalactic medium. The targets were selected from X-ray and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect surveys, and observed with both the \textit{XMM-Newton} and \textit{Chandra} satellites. For each cluster, a precise gas mass profile was extracted, from which the value of $r_{500}$ could be estimated. This allows us to define …
While the average metallicity of the intergalactic medium rises above Z~10^{-3} Zsun by the end of the reionization, pockets of metal-free gas can still exist at later times. We quantify the presence of a long tail in the formation rate of metal-free halos during late stages of reionization (redshift z~6), which might offer the best window to detect Population III stars. Using cosmological simulations for the growth of dark matter halos, coupled with analytical recipes for the metal enrichment of their interstellar medium, we show that pockets of metal-free gas exist at z~6 even under the assu…
By creating and analyzing the two dimensional gas temperature and abundance maps of the RGH 80 compact galaxy group with the high-quality Chandra data, we detect a high-abundance ($\simeq 0.7$ $Z_\odot$) arc, where the metal abundance is significantly higher than the surrounding regions by $\simeq 0.3$ Z_\odot$. This structure shows tight spatial correlations with the member galaxy PGC 046529, as well as with the arm-like feature identified on the X-ray image in the previous work of Randall et al. (2009). Since no apparent signature of AGN activity is found associated with PGC 046529 in multi-…
IGM metal absorption lines observed in z>6 spectra offer the opportunity to probe early feedback processes, the nature of enriching sources, and the topology of reionization. We run high-resolution cosmological simulations including galactic outflows to study the observability and physical properties of 5 ions (C II, C IV, O I, Si II, Si IV) in absorption between z=8->5. We apply three cases for ionization conditions: Fully neutral, fully reionized, and a patchy model based on the flux from the nearest galaxy. We find that our simulations broadly fit available z~5-6 IGM metal-line data, althou…
We investigate the efficiency and time-dependence of thermally and cosmic ray driven galactic winds for the metal enrichment of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) using a new analytical approximation for the mass outflow. The spatial distribution of the metals are studied using radial metallicity profiles and 2D metallicity maps of the model clusters as they would be observed by X-ray telescopes like XMM-Newton. Analytical approximations for the mass loss by galactic winds driven by thermal and cosmic ray pressure are derived from the Bernoulli equation and implemented in combined N-body/hydrodyna…
We investigate the large-scale influence of outflows from AGNs in enriching the IGM with metals in a cosmological context. We combine cosmological simulations of large scale structure formation with a detailed model of metal enrichment, in which outflows expand anisotropically along the direction of least resistance, distributing metals into the IGM. The metals carried by the outflows are generated by two separate stellar populations: stars located near the central AGN, and stars located in the greater galaxy. Using this algorithm, we performed a series of 5 simulations of the propagation of A…
The first generation of stars that formed directly from the primordial gas played a crucial role in the early phase of the reionization of the universe. Because of the short lifetimes of these stars the metals produced in their cores were quickly returned to the environment, from which early PopII stars with a different initial mass function and different SEDs were formed, already much earlier than the time at which the universe became completely reionized at a redshift of z~6. Using a state-of-the-art model atmosphere code we calculate realistic SEDs of very massive stars (VMSs) of different …
We study cosmic metal enrichment via AMR hydrodynamical simulations in a (10 Mpc/h)$^3$ volume following the Pop III-Pop II transition and for different Pop III IMFs. We have analyzed the joint evolution of metal enrichment on galactic and intergalactic scales at z=6 and z=4. Galaxies account for <9% of the baryonic mass; the remaining gas resides in the diffuse phases: (a) voids, i.e. regions with extremely low density ($Δ$<1), (b) the true intergalactic medium (IGM, 1<$Δ$<10) and (c) the circumgalactic medium (CGM, 10<$Δ<10^{2.5}$), the interface between the IGM and galaxies. By z=6 a galact…
By definition, Population III stars are metal-free, and their protostellar collapse is driven by molecular hydrogen cooling in the gas-phase, leading to large characteristic masses. Population II stars with lower characteristic masses form when the star-forming gas reaches a critical metallicity of 10^{-6} - 10^{-3.5} Z_\odot. We present an adaptive mesh refinement radiation hydrodynamics simulation that follows the transition from Population III to II star formation. The maximum spatial resolution of 1 comoving parsec allows for individual molecular clouds to be well-resolved and their stella…
Most of the metals (elements heavier than helium) ever produced by stars in the member galaxies of galaxy clusters currently reside within the hot, X-ray emitting intra-cluster gas. Observations of X-ray line emission from this intergalactic medium have suggested a relatively small cluster-to-cluster scatter outside of the cluster centers and enrichment with iron out to large radii, leading to the idea that the metal enrichment occurred early in the history of the Universe. Models with early enrichment predict a uniform metal distribution at large radii in clusters, while late-time enrichment,…
Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most luminous electromagnetic explosions in the Universe, which emit up to $8.8\times10^{54}$ erg isotropic equivalent energy in the hard X-ray band. The high luminosity makes them detectable out to the largest distances yet explored in the Universe. GRBs, as bright beacons in the deep Universe, would be the ideal tool to probe the properties of high-redshift universe: including the cosmic expansion and dark energy, star formation rate, the reionization epoch and the metal enrichment history of the Universe. In this article, we review the luminosity correlations…
This work measures the evolution of the iron content in galaxy clusters by a rigorous analysis of the data of 130 clusters at 0.1<z<1.3. This task is made difficult by a) the low signal-to-noise ratio of abundance measurements and the upper limits, b) possible selection effects, c) boundaries in the parameter space, d) non-Gaussian errors, e) the intrinsic variety of the objects studied, and f) abundance systematics. We introduce a Bayesian model to address all these issues at the same time, thus allowing cross-talk (covariance). On simulated data, the Bayesian fit recovers the input enrichmen…
