We analyse deterministic diffusion in a simple, one-dimensional setting consisting of a family of four parameter dependent, chaotic maps defined over the real line. When iterated under these maps, a probability density function spreads out and one can define a diffusion coefficient. We look at how the diffusion coefficient varies across the family of maps and under parameter variation. Using a technique by which Taylor-Green-Kubo formulae are evaluated in terms of generalised Takagi functions, we derive exact, fully analytical expressions for the diffusion coefficients. Typically, for simple maps these quantities are fractal functions of control parameters. However, our family of four maps exhibits both fractal and linear behavior. We explain these different structures by looking at the topology of the Markov partitions and the ergodic properties of the maps.
We present a result relating the density of quantum resonances for an open chaotic system to the fractal dimension of the associated classical repeller. The result is supported by numerical computation of the resonances of the system of n disks on a plane. The result generalizes the Weyl law for the density of states of a closed system to chaotic open systems.
Understanding irreversibility in macrophysics from reversible microphysics has been the holy grail in statistical physics ever since the mid-19th century. Here the central question concerns the arrow of time, which boils down to deriving macroscopic emergent irreversibility from microscopic reversible equations of motion. As suggested by Boltzmann, this irreversibility amounts to improbability (rather than impossibility) of the second-law-violating events. Later studies suggest that this improbability arises from a fractal attractor which is dynamically generated in phase space in reversible d…
A topological bifurcation in chaotic scattering is characterized by a sudden change in the topology of the infinite set of unstable periodic orbits embedded in the underlying chaotic invariant set. We uncover a scaling law for the fractal dimension of the chaotic set for such a bifurcation. Our analysis and numerical computations in both two- and three-degrees-of-freedom systems suggest a striking feature associated with these subtle bifurcations: the dimension typically exhibits a sharp, cusplike local minimum at the bifurcation.
In open chaotic systems the number of long-lived resonance states obeys a fractal Weyl law, which depends on the fractal dimension of the chaotic saddle. We study the generic case of a mixed phase space with regular and chaotic dynamics. We find a hierarchy of fractal Weyl laws, one for each region of the hierarchical decomposition of the chaotic phase-space component. This is based on our observation of hierarchical resonance states localizing on these regions. Numerically this is verified for the standard map and a hierarchical model system.
The fractal Weyl law connects the asymptotic level number with the fractal dimension of the chaotic repeller. We provide the first test for the fractal Weyl law for a three-dimensional open scattering system. For the four-sphere billiard, we investigate the chaotic repeller and discuss the semiclassical quantization of the system by the method of cycle expansion with symmetry decomposition. We test the fractal Weyl law for various symmetry subspaces and sphere-to-sphere separations.
Using examples we test formulae previously conjectured to give the fractal information dimension of chaotic repellors and their stable and unstable manifolds in ``typical'' dynamical systems in terms of the Lyapunov exponents and the characteristic escape time from the repellor. Our main example, a three-dimensional chaotic scattering billiard, yields a new structure for its invariant manifolds. This system also provides an example of a system which is not typical and illustrates how perturbation to the system restores typicality and the applicability of the dimension formulae.
Chaotic transients occur in many experiments including those in fluids, in simulations of the plane Couette flow, and in coupled map lattices and they are a common phenomena in dynamical systems. Superlong chaotic transients are caused by the presence of chaotic saddles whose stable sets have fractal dimensions that are close to phase-space dimension. For many physical systems chaotic saddles have a big impact on laboratory measurements, and it is important to compute the dimension of such stable sets including fractal basin boundaries through a direct method. In this work, we present a new me…
We demonstrate that the harmonic inversion technique is a powerful tool to analyze the spectral properties of optical microcavities. As an interesting example we study the statistical properties of complex frequencies of the fully chaotic microstadium. We show that the conjectured fractal Weyl law for open chaotic systems [W. T. Lu, S. Sridhar, and M. Zworski, Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 154101 (2003)] is valid for dielectric microcavities only if the concept of the chaotic repeller is extended to a multifractal by incorporating Fresnel's laws.
We numerically show fractal Weyl law behavior in an open Hamiltonian system that is described by a smooth potential and which supports numerous above-barrier resonances. This behavior holds even relatively far away from the classical limit. The complex resonance wave functions are found to be localized on the fractal classical repeller.
It is shown that conductance fluctuations due to phase coherent ballistic transport through a chaotic cavity generically are fractals. The graph of conductance vs. externally changed parameter, e.g. magnetic field, is a fractal with dimension D=2-b/2 between 1 and 2. It is governed by the exponent b (<2) of the power law distribution P(t) ~ t^{-b} for a classically chaotic trajectory to stay in the cavity up to time t, which is typical for chaotic systems with a mixed (chaotic and regular) phase space. The phenomenon should be observable in semiconductor nanostructures and microwave billiards.
We study the semiclassical quantization of Poincaré maps arising in scattering problems with fractal hyperbolic trapped sets. The main application is the proof of a fractal Weyl upper bound for the number of resonances/scattering poles in small domains near the real axis. This result encompasses the case of several convex (hard) obstacles satisfying a no-eclipse condition.
The phase ordering dynamics of coupled chaotic maps on fractal networks are investigated. The statistical properties of the systems are characterized by means of the persistence probability of equivalent spin variables that define the phases. The persistence saturates and phase domains freeze for all values of the coupling parameter as a consequence of the fractal structure of the networks, in contrast to the phase transition behavior previously observed in regular Euclidean lattices. Several discontinuities and other features found in the saturation persistence curve as a function of the coup…
Despite several experiments on chaotic quantum transport in two-dimensional systems such as semiconductor quantum dots, corresponding quantum simulations within a real-space model have been out of reach so far. Here we carry out quantum transport calculations in real space and real time for a two-dimensional stadium cavity that shows chaotic dynamics. By applying a large set of magnetic fields we obtain a complete picture of magnetoconductance that indicates fractal scaling. In the calculations of the fractality we use detrended fluctuation analysis -- a widely used method in time series analy…
We model Lagrangian lateral mixing and transport of passive scalars in meandering oceanic jet currents by two-dimensional advection equations with a kinematic stream function with a time-dependent amplitude of a meander imposed. The advection in such a model is known to be chaotic in a wide range of the meander's characteristics. We study chaotic transport in a stochastic layer and show that it is anomalous. The geometry of mixing is examined and shown to be fractal-like. The scattering characteristics (trapping time of advected particles and the number of their rotations around elliptical poi…
We use tools from nonlinear dynamics to the detailed analysis of cold atom experiments. A powerful example is provided by the recent concept of basin entropy which allows to quantify the final state unpredictability that results from the complexity of the phase space geometry. We show here that this enables one to reliably infer the presence of fractal structures in phase space from direct measurements. We illustrate the method with numerical simulations in an experimental configuration made of two crossing laser guides that can be used as a matter wave splitter.
We analyze simple models of quantum chaotic scattering, namely quantized open baker's maps. We numerically compute the density of quantum resonances in the semiclassical régime. This density satisfies a fractal Weyl law, where the exponent is governed by the (fractal) dimension of the set of trapped trajectories. This type of behaviour is also expected in the (physically more relevant) case of Hamiltonian chaotic scattering. Within a simplified model, we are able to rigorously prove this Weyl law, and compute quantities related to the "coherent transport" through the system, namely the conduct…
The semiclassical structure of resonance states of classically chaotic scattering systems with partial escape is investigated. We introduce a local randomization on phase space for the baker map with escape, which separates the smallest multifractal scale from the scale of the Planck cell. This allows for deriving a semiclassical description of resonance states based on a local random vector model and conditional invariance. We numerically demonstrate that the resulting classical measures perfectly describe resonance states of all decay rates $γ$ for the randomized baker map. By decreasing the…
Fluctuational transitions between two co-existing chaotic attractors, separated by a fractal basin boundary, are studied in a discrete dynamical system. It is shown that the mechanism for such transitions is determined by a hierarchy of homoclinic points. The most probable escape path from the chaotic attractor to the fractal boundary is found using both statistical analyses of fluctuational trajectories and the Hamiltonian theory of fluctuations.
This report unravels frustration as a source of transient chaotic dynamics even in a simple array of coupled limit cycle oscillators. The transient chaotic dynamics along with the multistable nature of frustrated systems facilitates the existence of complex basin structures such as fractal and riddled basins. In particular, we report the emergence of transient chaotic dynamics around the chaotic itinerancy region, where the basin of attraction near the chaotic region is riddled and it becomes fractal basin when we move away from this region. Normally the complex basin structures are observed o…
The quantum resonances of classically chaotic n-disk geometries were studied experimentally utilizing thin 2-D microwave geometries. The experiments yield the frequencies and widths of low-lying resonances, which are compared with semiclassical calculations. The longtime or small energy behavior of the wave-vector auto-correlation gives information about the quantum decay rate, which is in good agreement with that obtained from classical scattering theory. The intermediate energy behavior shows non-universal oscillations determined by periodic orbits.
Chaotic walking of cold atoms in a tilted optical lattice, created by two counter propagating running waves with an additional external field, is demonstrated theoretically and numerically in the semiclassical and Hamiltonian approximations. The effect consists in random-like changing the direction of atomic motion in a rigid lattice under the influence of a constant force due to a specific behavior of the atomic dipole-moment component that changes abruptly in a random-like manner while atoms cross standing-wave nodes. Chaotic walking generates a fractal-like scattering of atoms that manifest…
We study the consequences of deterministic chaos for diffusion-controlled reaction. As an example, we analyze a diffusive-reactive deterministic multibaker and a parameter-dependent variation of it. We construct the diffusive and the reactive modes of the models as eigenstates of the Frobenius-Perron operator. The associated eigenvalues provide the dispersion relations of diffusion and reaction and, hence, they determine the reaction rate. For the simplest model we show explicitly that the reaction rate behaves as phenomenologically expected for one-dimensional diffusion-controlled reaction. U…
In chaotic reaction-diffusion systems with two degrees of freedom, the modes governing the exponential relaxation to the thermodynamic equilibrium present a fractal structure which can be characterized by a Hausdorff dimension. For long wavelength modes, this dimension is related to the Lyapunov exponent and to a reactive diffusion coefficient. This relationship is tested numerically on a reactive multibaker model and on a two-dimensional periodic reactive Lorentz gas. The agreement with the theory is excellent.
We use the Ulam method to study spectral properties of the Perron-Frobenius operators of dynamical maps in a chaotic regime. For maps with absorption we show that the spectrum is characterized by the fractal Weyl law recently established for nonunitary operators describing poles of quantum chaotic scattering with the Weyl exponent $ν=d-1$, where $d$ is the fractal dimension of corresponding strange set of trajectories nonescaping in future times. In contrast, for dissipative maps we find the Weyl exponent $ν=d/2$ where $d$ is the fractal dimension of strange attractor. The Weyl exponent can be…
Aerosols under chaotic advection often approach a strange attractor. They move chaotically on this fractal set but, in the presence of gravity, they have a net vertical motion downwards. In practical situations, observational data may be available only at a given level, for example at the ground level. We uncover two fractal signatures of chaotic advection of aerosols under the action of gravity. Each one enables the computation of the fractal dimension $D_{0}$ of the strange attractor governing the advection dynamics from data obtained solely at a given level. We illustrate our theoretical fi…
We consider the time-dependent statistical distributions of diffusive processes in relaxation to a stationary state for simple, two dimensional chaotic models based upon random walks on a line. We show that the cumulative functions of the hydrodynamic modes of diffusion form fractal curves in the complex plane, with a Hausdorff dimension larger than one. In the limit of vanishing wavenumber, we derive a simple expression of the diffusion coefficient in terms of this Hausdorff dimension and the positive Lyapunov exponent of the chaotic model.
We investigate the dynamics of passive particles in a two-dimensional incompressible open flow composed of a fixed topographical point vortex and a background current with a periodic component. The tracer dynamics is found to be typically chaotic in a mixing region and regular in far upstream and downstream regions of the flow. Chaotic advection of tracers is proven to be of a homoclinic nature with transversal intersections of stable and unstable manifolds of the saddle point. In spite of simplicity of the flow, chaotic trajectories are very complicated alternatively sticking nearby boundarie…
We propose a flat-histogram Monte Carlo method to efficiently sample fractal landscapes such as escape time functions of open chaotic systems. This is achieved by using a random-walk step which depends on the height of the landscape via the largest Lyapunov exponent of the associated chaotic system. By generalizing the Wang-Landau algorithm, we obtain a method which simultaneously constructs the density of states (escape time distribution) and the correct step-length distribution. As a result, averages are obtained in polynomial computational time, a dramatic improvement over the exponential s…
A finite universe naturally supports chaotic classical motion. An ordered fractal emerges from the chaotic dynamics which we characterize in full for a compact 2-dimensional octagon. In the classical to quantum transition, the underlying fractal can persist in the form of scars, ridges of enhanced amplitude in the semiclassical wave function. Although the scarring is weak on the octagon, we suggest possible subtle implications of fractals and scars in a finite universe.
Using fractal analysis, we investigate how the size of openings affects the chaotic behavior of a classical closed billiard when two openings are made on the boundary of the billiard. This kind of open billiards retains chaotic properties of original closed billiards when openings are small compared to the size of the billiard. We calculate the fractal dimension using an one-dimensional subset of all possible initial conditions that will produce trajectories of a particle injected from an opening for the billiard, and then observe how the opening size can change the classical chaotic propertie…
The nonlinear dynamics of a recently derived generalized Lorenz model (Macek and Strumik, Phys. Rev. E 82, 027301, 2010) of magnetoconvection is studied. A bifurcation diagram is constructed as a function of the Rayleigh number where attractors and nonattracting chaotic sets coexist inside a periodic window. The nonattracting chaotic sets, also called chaotic saddles, are responsible for fractal basin boundaries with a fractal dimension near the dimension of the phase space, which causes the presence of very long chaotic transients. It is shown that the chaotic saddles can be used to infer pro…
Transport by normal diffusion can be decomposed into the so-called hydrodynamic modes which relax exponentially toward the equilibrium state. In chaotic systems with two degrees of freedom, the fine scale structure of these hydrodynamic modes is singular and fractal. We characterize them by their Hausdorff dimension which is given in terms of Ruelle's topological pressure. For long-wavelength modes, we derive a striking relation between the Hausdorff dimension, the diffusion coefficient, and the positive Lyapunov exponent of the system. This relation is tested numerically on two chaotic system…
Fractal structures pervade nature and are receiving increasing engineering attention towards the realization of broadband resonators and antennas. We show that fractal resonators can support the emergence of high-dimensional chaotic dynamics even in the context of an elementary, single-transistor oscillator circuit. Sierpiński gaskets of variable depth are constructed using discrete capacitors and inductors, whose values are scaled according to a simple sequence. It is found that in regular fractals of this kind each iteration effectively adds a conjugate pole/zero pair, yielding gradually mor…
In this letter we consider the phase diffusion of a harmonically driven undamped pendulum and show that it is anomalous in the strong sense. The role played by the fractal properties of the phase space is highlighted, providing an illustration of the link between deterministic chaos and anomalous transport. Finally, we build a stochastic model which reproduces most properties of the original Hamiltonian system by alternating ballistic flights and random diffusion.
Conductance fluctuations have been studied in a soft wall stadium and a Sinai billiard defined by electrostatic gates on a high mobility semiconductor heterojunction. These reproducible magnetoconductance fluctuations are found to be fractal confirming recent theoretical predictions of quantum signatures in classically mixed (regular and chaotic) systems. The fractal character of the fluctuations provides direct evidence for a hierarchical phase space structure at the boundary between regular and chaotic motion.
We calculate the maximal Lyapunov exponent, the generalized entropies, the asymptotic distance between nearby trajectories and the fractal dimensions for a finite two dimensional system at different initial excitation energies. We show that these quantities have a maximum at about the same excitation energy. The presence of this maximum indicates the transition from a chaotic regime to a more regular one. In the chaotic regime the system is composed mainly of a liquid drop while the regular one corresponds to almost freely flowing particles and small clusters. At the transitional excitation en…
If a point particle moves chaotically through a periodic array of scatterers the associated transport coefficients are typically irregular functions under variation of control parameters. For a piecewise linear two-parameter map we analyze the structure of the associated irregular diffusion coefficient and current by numerically computing dimensions from box-counting and from the autocorrelation function of these graphs. We find that both dimensions are fractal for large parameter intervals and that both quantities are themselves fractal functions if computed locally on a uniform grid of small…
Departing from classical concepts of ergodic theory, formulated in terms of probability densities, measures describing the chaotic behavior and the loss of information in quantum open systems are proposed. As application we discuss the chaotic outcomes of continuous measurement processes in the EEQT framework. Simultaneous measurement of four noncommuting spin components is shown to lead to a chaotic jump on quantum spin sphere and to generate specific fractal images - nonlinear ifs (iterated function system). The model is purely theoretical at this stage, and experimental confirmation of the …
We study a model inspired by the pinball machine involving chaotic scattering of particles on hard disks with inelasticity. This system exhibits sensitivity not only on the initial conditions of the scattering point particle but also on the external force produced by the pinballs. The deflection function shows fractal structure with regions of wild oscillations which are exponentially compressed as a function of the force exerted by the hard disks. The chaotic properties of the repeller, such as the scaling of the fractal dimension, the Lyapunov exponents and the pressure function, are studied…
We present a new and complete analysis of the n-bounce resonance and chaotic scattering in solitary wave collisions. In these phenomena, the speed at which a wave exits a collision depends in a complicated fractal way on its input speed. We present a new asymptotic analysis of collective-coordinate ODEs, reduced models that reproduce the dynamics of these systems. We reduce the ODEs to discrete-time iterated separatrix maps and obtain new quantitative results unraveling the fractal structure of the scattering behavior. These phenomena have been observed repeatedly in many solitary-wave systems…
We investigate chaotic dynamical systems for which the intensity of trajectories might grow unlimited in time. We show that (i) the intensity grows exponentially in time and is distributed spatially according to a fractal measure with an information dimension smaller than that of the phase space,(ii) such exploding cases can be described by an operator formalism similar to the one applied to chaotic systems with absorption (decaying intensities), but (iii) the invariant quantities characterizing explosion and absorption are typically not directly related to each other, e.g., the decay rate and…
We discuss stationary solutions of the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation (DNSE) with a potential of the $ϕ^{4}$ type which is generically applicable to several quantum spin, electron and classical lattice systems. We show that there may arise chaotic spatial structures in the form of incommensurate or irregular quantum states. As a first (typical) example we consider a single electron which is strongly coupled with phonons on a $1D$ chain of atoms --- the (Rashba)--Holstein polaron model. In the adiabatic approximation this system is conventionally described by the DNSE. Another relevant…
Anomalous kinetics of infective (e.g., autocatalytic) reactions in open, nonhyperbolic chaotic flows are important for many applications in biological, chemical, and environmental sciences. We present a scaling theory for the singular enhancement of the production caused by the universal, underlying fractal patterns. The key dynamical invariant quantities are the effective fractal dimension and effective escape rate, which are primarily determined by the hyperbolic components of the underlying dynamical invariant sets. The theory is general as it includes all previously studied hyperbolic reac…
We discuss a variation of Takagi curves based, however, more on algebraic than geometric principles. Namely, we construct functions of loops in a special binary representation. The graph of these functions usually has chaotic and fractal forms, sometimes recall mountain landscapes. Nevertheless, the values in a dense set of points and even the integral of these functions can be calculated explicitly.
Active fluids, composed of individual self-propelled agents, can generate complex large-scale coherent flows. A particularly important laboratory realization of such an active fluid is a system composed of microtubules, aligned in a quasi-two-dimensional (2D) nematic phase, and driven by ATP-fueled kinesin motor proteins. This system exhibits robust chaotic advection and gives rise to a pronounced fractal structure in the nematic contours. We characterize such experimentally derived fractals using the power spectrum and discover that the power spectrum decays as $k^{-β}$ for large wavenumbers …
Chaos is associated with stochasticity, complex, irregular motion, etc. It has some peculiar properties such as ergodicity, highly initial value sensitivity, non-periodicity and long-term unpredictability. These pseudo random features lead chaotic systems to enormous applications such as random number generator, image encryption and secure communication. In general, the concept of chaos is never associated with similarity. However, we found the chaotic systems belonging to one chaos family (OCF) have similar dynamic behavior, which is a novel characteristic of chaos. In this work, three classi…
Profiles of static solitons in one-dimensional scalar field theory satisfy the same equations as trajectories of a fictitious particle in multidimensional mechanics. We argue that the structure and properties of the solitons are essentially different if the respective mechanical motions are chaotic. This happens in multifield models and models with spatially dependent potential. We illustrate our findings using one-field sine-Gordon model in external Dirac comb potential. First, we show that the number of different "chaotic" solitons grows exponentially with their length, and the growth rate i…
Multi-wing chaotic attractors are highly complex nonlinear dynamical systems with higher number of index-2 equilibrium points. Due to the presence of several equilibrium points, randomness of the state time series for these multi-wing chaotic systems is higher than that of the conventional double wing chaotic attractors. A real coded Genetic Algorithm (GA) based global optimization framework has been presented in this paper, to design optimum PID controllers so as to control the state trajectories of three different multi-wing Lorenz like chaotic systems viz. Lu, Rucklidge and Sprott-1 system.
We study the invariant measure or the stationary density of a coupled discrete dynamical system as a function of the coupling parameter ε(0 < ε< 1/4). The dynamical system considered is chaotic and unsynchronized for this range of parameter values. We find that the stationary density, restricted on the synchronization manifold, is a fractal function. We find the lower bound on the fractal dimension of the graph of this function and show that it changes continuously with the coupling parameter
We review recent studies about the resonance spectrum of quantum scattering systems, in the semiclassical limit and assuming chaotic classical dynamics. Stationary quantum properties are related to fractal structures in the classical phase space. We focus attention on a particular class of problems that are chaotic maps in the torus with holes. Among the topics considered are the fractal Weyl law, the formation of a spectral gap and the morphology of eigenstates. We also discuss the situation when the holes are only partially transparent and the use of random matrices for a statistical descrip…
We use the Hénon-Heiles system as a paradigmatic model for chaotic scattering to study the Lorentz factor effects on its transient chaotic dynamics. In particular, we focus on how time dilation occurs within the scattering region by measuring the time in a clock attached to the particle. We observe that the several events of time dilation that the particle undergoes exhibit sensitivity to initial conditions. However, the structure of the singularities appearing in the escape time function remains invariant under coordinate transformations. This occurs because the singularities are closely rela…
Unimodal maps have been broadly used as a base of new encryption strategies. Recently, a stream cipher has been proposed in the literature, whose keystream is basically a symbolic sequence of the (one-parameter) logistic map or of the tent map. In the present work a thorough analysis of the keystream is made which reveals the existence of some serious security problems
Preliminary results of extensive numerical experiments on a simple model specified by the smooth canonical strongly chaotic 2D-map with global virtual invariant curves (VICs) are presented and discussed. We focus on the statistics of the diffusion rate of individual trajectories in dependence on the model parameters. Our previous conjecture about the fractal statistics determined by the critical structure of both the phase space and the motion is confirmed and studied in some detail. Particularly, we have found specific characteristics of what we termed the VIC diffusion suppression which is r…
We consider chains of one-dimensional, piecewise linear, chaotic maps with uniform slope. We study the diffusive behaviour of an initially nonuniform distribution of points as a function of the slope of the map by solving Frobenius-Perron equation. For Markov partition values of the slope, we relate the diffusion coefficient to eigenvalues of the topological transition matrix. The diffusion coefficient obtained shows a fractal structure as a function of the slope of the map. This result may be typical for a wide class of maps, such as two dimensional sawtooth maps.
We study the spectrum of quantized open maps, as a model for the resonance spectrum of quantum scattering systems. We are particularly interested in open maps admitting a fractal repeller. Using the ``open baker's map'' as an example, we numerically investigate the exponent appearing in the Fractal Weyl law for the density of resonances; we show that this exponent is not related with the ``information dimension'', but rather the Hausdorff dimension of the repeller. We then consider the semiclassical measures associated with the eigenstates: we prove that these measures are conditionally invari…
The quasienergy spectrum of a Bloch electron affected by dc-ac fields is known to be a fractal function of the so-called electric matching ratio which is the ratio of the ac field frequency and the Bloch frequency. This paper studies a manifestation of the fractal spectrum in the system atom in a standing laser wave, which is a quantum optical realization of a Bloch electron. It is shown that for an appropriate choice of the system parameters the atomic survival probability (a quantity measured in laboratory experiments) develops a fractal structure as a function of the electric matching ratio…
