We use the Ulam method to study spectral properties of the Perron-Frobenius operators of dynamical maps in a chaotic regime. For maps with absorption we show that the spectrum is characterized by the fractal Weyl law recently established for nonunitary operators describing poles of quantum chaotic scattering with the Weyl exponent $ν=d-1$, where $d$ is the fractal dimension of corresponding strange set of trajectories nonescaping in future times. In contrast, for dissipative maps we find the Weyl exponent $ν=d/2$ where $d$ is the fractal dimension of strange attractor. The Weyl exponent can be also expressed via the relation $ν=d_0/2$ where $d_0$ is the fractal dimension of the invariant sets. We also discuss the properties of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of such operators characterized by the fractal Weyl law.
The problem of phase space transport which is of interest both theoretically and from the point of view of applications has been investigated extensively using geometric and probabilistic methods. Two of the important tools for this that emerged in the last decade are the Finite time Lyapunov exponents (FTLE) and the Perron-Frobenius operator. The relationship between these approaches has not been clearly understood so far. In this paper a methodology is presented to compute the FTLE from the Perron-Frobenius operator, thus providing a step towards combining both the methods into a common fram…
We consider discrete-time dynamical systems with a linear relaxation dynamics that are driven by deterministic chaotic forces. By perturbative expansion in a small time scale parameter, we derive from the Perron-Frobenius equation the corrections to ordinary Fokker-Planck equations in leading order of the time scale separation parameter. We present analytic solutions to the equations for the example of driving forces generated by N-th order Chebychev maps. The leading order corrections are universal for N larger or equal to 4 but different for N=2 and N=3. We also study diffusively coupled Che…
The subleading eigenvalues and associated eigenfunctions of the Perron-Frobenius operator for 2-dimensional area-preserving maps are numerically investigated. We closely examine the validity of the so-called Ulam method, a numerical scheme believed to provide eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Perron-Frobenius operator, both for linear and nonlinear maps on the torus. For the nonlinear case, the second-largest eigenvalues and the associated eigenfunctions of the Perron-Frobenius operator are investigated by calculating the Fokker-Planck operator with sufficiently small diffusivity. On the b…
We introduce a generalized Ulam method and apply it to symplectic dynamical maps with a divided phase space. Our extensive numerical studies based on the Arnoldi method show that the Ulam approximant of the Perron-Frobenius operator on a chaotic component converges to a continuous limit. Typically, in this regime the spectrum of relaxation modes is characterized by a power law decay for small relaxation rates. Our numerical data show that the exponent of this decay is approximately equal to the exponent of Poincaré recurrences in such systems. The eigenmodes show links with trajectories sticki…
Maps on a parameter space for expressing distribution functions are exactly derived from the Perron-Frobenius equations for a generalized Boole transform family. Here the generalized Boole transform family is a one-parameter family of maps where it is defined on a subset of the real line and its probability distribution function is the Cauchy distribution with some parameters. With this reduction, some relations between the statistical picture and the orbital one are shown. From the viewpoint of information geometry, the parameter space can be identified with a statistical manifold, and then i…
We propose a method for computing the transfer entropy between time series using Ulam's approximation of the Perron-Frobenius (transfer) operator associated with the map generating the dynamics. Our method differs from standard transfer entropy estimators in that the invariant measure is estimated not directly from the data points but from the invariant distribution of the transfer operator approximated from the data points. For sparse time series and low embedding dimension, the transfer operator is approximated using a triangulation of the attractor, whereas for data-rich time series or high…
We study the properties of the Google matrix of an Ulam network generated by intermittency maps. This network is created by the Ulam method which gives a matrix approximant for the Perron-Frobenius operator of dynamical map. The spectral properties of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of this matrix are analyzed. We show that the PageRank of the system is characterized by a power law decay with the exponent $β$ dependent on map parameters and the Google damping factor $α$. Under certain conditions the PageRank is completely delocalized so that the Google search in such a situation becomes inefficie…
