We introduce a class of optical media based on adiabatically modulated, dielectric-only, and potentially extremely low-loss, photonic crystals. The media we describe represent a generalization of the eikonal limit of transformation optics (TO). The foundation of the concept is the possibility to fit frequency isosurfaces in the k-space of photonic crystals with elliptic surfaces, allowing them to mimic the dispersion relation of light in anisotropic effective media. Photonic crystal cloaks and other TO devices operating at visible wavelengths can be constructed from optically transparent substances like glasses, whose attenuation coefficient can be as small as 10 dB/km, suggesting the TO design methodology can be applied to the development of optical devices not limited by the losses inherent to metal-based, passive metamaterials.
In this paper we develop a generalized mode-expansion scheme for the vector lightwaves propagating in 3D disordered media, and find the photonic phase transition from an extended-state (ES) phase to a mixed-state (MS) phase as a localization intensity parameter $G$ rises above $1/\sqrt{2}$. For the disordered media consisting of plenty of uniform spherical scattering particles, we formulate this phenomena at first in terms of actual optical and geometric parameters of the disordered media.
We theoretically investigate the non-radiative heat transfer between two photonic crystals separated by a small gap in non-equilibrium thermal situation. We predict that the surface Bloch states coupling supported by these media can make heat exchanges larger than those measured at the same separation distance between two massive homogeneous materials made with the elementary components of photonic crystals. These results could find broad applications in near-field technologies.
Light transmission in inhomogeneous photonic media is strongly influenced by the distribution of the diffractive elements in the medium. Here it is shown theoretically that, in a pillar photonic crystal structure, light transmission and homogeneity of the pillar distribution are correlated by a simple linear law once the grade of homogeneity of the photonic structure is measured by the Shannon index, widely employed in statistics, ecology and information entropy. The statistical analysis shows that the transmission of light in such media depends linearly from their homogeneity: the more is hom…
Photonic scattering materials, such as biological tissue and white paper, are made of randomly positioned nanoscale inhomogeneities in refractive index that lead to multiple scattering of light. Typically these materials, both naturally-occurring or man-made, are formed through self assembly of the scattering inhomogeneities, which imposes challenges in tailoring the disorder and hence the optical properties. Here, We report on the nanofabrication of photonic scattering media using direct laser writing with deterministic design. These deterministic scattering media consist of submicron thick p…
The minimal refractive index contrast to obtain a complete photonic bandgap (CPBG) in structured media was not identified so far. We address this problem by considering distributed quasicrystals in with arbitrary number and positions of Bragg peaks in reciprocal space. For these structures an analytical estimation is derived which predicts that there is an optimal number of Bragg peaks for any refractive index contrast and finite CPBGs for an arbitrarily small refractive index contrast in 2D and 3D. Results of numerical simulations of dipole emission in 2D structures support our estimation. In…
We study the focusing of light through random photonic materials using wavefront shaping. We explore a novel approach namely binary amplitude modulation. To this end, the light incident to a random photonic medium is spatially divided into a number of segments. We identify the segments that give rise to fields that are out of phase with the total field at the intended focus and assign these a zero amplitude, whereas the remaining segments maintain their original amplitude. Using 812 independently controlled segments of light, we find the intensity at the target to be 75 +/- 6 times enhanced ov…
Due to strong absorption of the incident light, the media with high refractive index are considered restrictive for applications in photonic crystals (PhCs). The possibility to resolve this problem by optical saturation effectively minimizing the absorption of the PhC medium is discussed. Such approach might be promising for the significant broadening of the photonic band-gap.
Time-varying media break temporal symmetries while preserving spatial symmetries intact. Thus, it represents an excellent conceptual framework to investigate the fundamental implications of Noether's theorem for the electromagnetic field. At the same time, addressing momentum conservation in time-varying media sheds light on the Abraham-Minkowski debate, where two opposing forms of the electromagnetic field momentum are defended. Here, we present a tutorial review on the conservation of momentum in time-varying media. We demonstrate that the Minkowski momentum is a conserved quantity with thre…
We present exact modal expansions for photonic systems including highly dispersive media. The formulas, based on a simple version of the Keldysh theorem, are very general since both permeability and permittivity can be dispersive, anisotropic, and even possibly non reciprocal. A simple dispersive test case where both plasmonic and geometrical resonances strongly interact exemplifies the numerical efficiency of our approach.
While parity-time (PT)-symmetric systems can exhibit real spectra in the exact PT-symmetry regime, the PT-symmetry is actually not a necessary condition for the real spectra. Here we show that non-PT-symmetric photonic crystals carrying Dirac-like cone dispersions can always exhibit real spectra as long as the average non-Hermiticity strength within the unit cell for the eigenstates is zero. By building a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian model, we find that the real spectra of the non-PT-symmetric system can be explained using the concept of pseudo-Hermiticity. We demonstrate using effective medium t…
The photonic modes mediated absorption dynamics at femtosecond time scales along with the control of spontaneous emission tunability are investigated all-dielectric optical microcavity having BaTiO3 (BTO) as defect layer. The cavity-enhanced transient absorption reveals the dominant excited state absorption (ESA) of both photonic and electronic modes due to strong third-order optical nonlinearity influence. Photoluminescence of BTO is found to be guided and tuned by the photonic cavity mode. Such active photonic structures can be envisaged as a potential candidate in nonlinear optics and photo…
The optical properties of materials are strongly influenced by disorder. Control of disorder in photonic materials can unveil interesting optical properties. We have found an engineered photonic structure for which the average light reflection shows a linear behaviour with a slope change in a broad range of wavelengths. Such change in slope is due to a specific degree of disorder, which is quantified by the Shannon index.
Dissipation is a ubiquitous phenomenon in dynamical systems encountered in nature because no finite system is fully isolated from its environment. In optical systems, a key challenge facing any technological application has traditionally been the mitigation of optical losses. Recent work has shown that a new class of optical materials that consist of a precisely balanced distribution of loss and gain can be exploited to engineer novel functionalities for propagating and filtering electromagnetic radiation. Here we show a generic property of optical systems that feature an unbalanced distributi…
The interaction between quantum two-level systems is typically short-range in free space and most photonic environments. Here we show that diminishing momentum isosurfaces with equal frequencies can create a significantly extended range of interaction between distant quantum systems. The extended range is robust and does not rely on a specific location or orientation of the transition dipoles. A general relation between the interaction range and properties of the isosurface is described for structured photonic media. It provides a new way to mediate long-range quantum behavior.
The optical properties of photonic structures made with more than two materials are very interesting for optical filtering and lighting applications. Herein, we compared the transmission properties of one-dimensional photonic crystals made with three, four and five materials, showing that, with a photonic crystal made of t different materials, the band gap splits in t-1 bands. The same optical thickness for the different materials layers results in split photonic band gaps with the same intensity. Photonic crystals with more than two materials result in a simple structure that could be used fo…
Whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in circularly symmetric optical microresonators exhibit integer quantized angular momentum numbers due to the boundary condition imposed by the geometry. Here, we show that incorporating a photonic crystal pattern in an integrated microring can result in WGMs with fractional optical angular momentum. By choosing the photonic crystal periodicity to open a photonic bandgap with a band-edge momentum lying between that of two WGMs of the unperturbed ring, we observe hybridized WGMs with half-integer quantized angular momentum numbers ($m \in \mathbb{Z}$ + 1/2). More…
Optical isolation is a long pursued object with fundamental difficulty in integrated photonics. As a step towards this goal, we demonstrate the design, fabrication, and characterization of on-chip wavelength-scale optical diodes that are made from the heterojunction between two different silicon two-dimensional square-lattice photonic crystal slabs with directional bandgap mismatch and different mode transitions. The measured transmission spectra show considerable unidirectional transmission behavior, in good agreement with numerical simulations. The experimental realization of on-chip optical…
We review the recent developments in the field of photonic lattices emphasizing their unique properties for controlling linear and nonlinear propagation of light. We draw some important links between optical lattices and photonic crystals pointing towards practical applications in optical communications and computing, beam shaping, and bio-sensing.
In this report we present an investigation of the optical properties and band structure calculations for the photonic structures based on the functional materials- ferroelectrics. A theoretical approach to the optical properties of the 2D and 3D photonic crystals which yields further insight in the phenomenon of the reflection from different families of lattice planes in relation to the presence of photonic gaps or photonic bands. We calculate the photonic bands and optical properties of LiNbO3 based photonic crystals. Calculations of reflection and transmission spectra show the features corre…
We propose a new type of bistable device for silicon photonics, using the self-electro-optic effect within an optical cavity. Since the bistability does not depend on the intrinsic optical nonlinearity of the material, but is instead engineered by means of an optoelectronic feedback, it appears at low optical powers. This bistable device satisfies all the basic criteria required in an optical switch to build a scalable digital optical computing system.
Using only electro-optic modulators, we generate a 41-line 10-GHz Gaussian-shaped optical frequency comb. We use this comb to demonstrate apodized microwave photonic filters with greater than 43-dB sidelobe suppression without the need for a pulse shaper.
Optical computing accelerators may help alleviate bandwidth and power consumption bottlenecks in electronics. We show an approach to implementing logarithmic-type analog co-processors in silicon photonics and use it to perform the exponentiation operation. The function is realized by exploiting nonlinear-absorption-enhanced Raman amplification saturation in a silicon waveguide.
We propose and study an efficient photonic CDE method using MZI-based coherent optical matrix multiplication. It improves the compensation performance by about 60% when the tap-length is limited, and only 50% taps of the theoretical value is needed for photonic CDE with 1-dB penalty.
We manipulate optical Tamm states in graphene-based photonics to achieve and steer large magneto-optical effects. Here we report the presence of a giant Faraday rotation via a single graphene layer of atomic thickness while keeping a high transmission. The Faraday rotation is enhanced across the interface between two photonic crystals due to the presence of an interface mode, which presents a strong electromagnetic field confinement at the location of the graphene sheet. Our proposed scheme opens a promising avenue to realize high performance graphene magneto-optical devices that can be extend…
We show that, taking a two-dimensional photonic-crystal slab system as an example, surprisingly high quality factors (Q) over 10^5 are achievable, even in the absence of a rigorous photonic-band-gap. We find that the density of in-plane Bloch modes can be controlled by creating additional photon feedback from a finite-size photonic-crystal boundary that serves as a low-Q resonator. This mechanism enables significant reduction in the coupling strength between the bound state and the extended Bloch modes by more than a factor of 40.
Light with nonzero orbital angular momentum (OAM) or twisted light is promising for quantum communication applications such as OAM-entangled photonic qubits. There exist photonic OAM to photonic spin angular momentum (SAM), as well as photonic SAM to electronic SAM interfaces but not any direct photonic OAM-electronic SAM (flying to stationary) media converter within a single device. Here, we propose a scheme which converts photonic OAM to electronic SAM and vice versa within a single nanophotonic device. We employed a photonic crystal nanocavity with an embedded quantum dot (QD) which confine…
We realized one dimensional disordered photonic structures by grouping high refractive index layers in clusters, randomly distributed in such structure. We have control on the maximum size of the cluster and on the ratio high-low refractive index layers. By studying the average transmission as a function of the maximum cluster size, we observe a trend with a minimum and very interesting oscillations. Our results provide new insight in the physics of random systems.
The outstanding phase-noise performance of optical frequency combs has led to a revolution in optical synthesis and metrology, covering a myriad of applications, from molecular spectroscopy to laser ranging and optical communications. However, the ideal characteristics of an optical frequency comb are application dependent. In this review, the different techniques for the generation and processing of high-repetition-rate (>10 GHz) optical frequency combs with technologies compatible with optical communication equipment are covered. Particular emphasis is put on the benefits and prospects of th…
We present a detailed study of the gain length in an active medium obtained by doping of DNA strands with DCM dye molecules. The superior thermal stability of the composite and its low quenching, permits to obtain optical gain coefficient larger than 300 cm^-1. We also show that such an active material is excellent for integration into photonic nano-structures, to achieve, for example, efficient random lasing emission, and fluorescent photonic crystals.
Using a 3D fully-vectorial nonlinear time-domain analysis we numerically investigate the generation of terahertz radiation by pumping a photonic crystal microcavity out of resonance. High quality factors and a quadratic susceptibility lead to few-cycle terahertz pulses via optical rectification. Material dispersion as well as linear and nonlinear anisotropy is fully accounted for.
In this paper we study thermo-optical effects in gallium phosphite photonic crystal cavities in the visible. By measuring the shift of narrow resonances we derive the temperature dependency of the local refractive index of gallium phosphide in attoliter volumina over a temperature range between 5 K and 300 K at a wavelength of about 605 nm. Additionally, the potential of photonic crystal cavities for thermo-optical switching of visible light is investigated. As an example we demonstrate thermo-optical switching with 13 dB contrast.
On-chip optical isolators play a key role in optical communications and computing based on silicon integrated photonic structures. Recently there have raised great attentions and hot controversies upon isolation of light via linear and passive photonic structures. Here we analyze the optical isolation properties of a silicon photonic crystal slab heterojunction diode by comparing the forward transmissivity and round-trip reflectivity of in-plane infrared light across the structure. The round-trip reflectivity is much smaller than the forward transmissivity, justifying good isolation. The consi…
Interface states in a 1-D photonic crystal heterostructure with multiple interfaces are examined. It is found that the behavior of the localized modes in the photonic band gaps is dependent on whether there is an even or odd number of photonic crystal interfaces in the heterostructure. With certain sequences of all dielectric photonic crystals, topological states are shown to split in two, whereas for other heterostructures they are shown to vanish. Additional resonant modes appear depending on how many crystals are in the heterostructure.
Energy-efficient optical control of photonic device properties is crucial for diverse photonic signal processing. Here we demonstrate extremely efficient optical tuning of photonic nanocavities, with only photon-level optical energy. With a lithium niobate photonic crystal nanocavity with an optical Q up to 1.41 million and an effective mode volume down to 0.78$(λ/n)^3$, we are able to achieve a resonance tuning rate of about 88.4~MHz/photon (0.67~GHz/aJ), which allows us to tune across the whole cavity resonance with only about 2.4 photons on average inside the cavity. Such a photon-level res…
Most dielectric materials have very weak electro-optic properties, whereas the optical properties of some plasmonic materials may be greatly tuned, especially around their plasma frequency, where dielectric constant is transiting between positive ("dielectric state") and negative ("metallic state") values. In this report, we will review some of our recent work on electro-optical modulation and introduce a new concept, photonic MOS based on "optical property inversion". This concept may provide inspiration for the development of nanophotonic devices. Some of the material was adapted from unfund…
The simulation of fermionic relativistic physics, e.g., Dirac and Weyl physics, has led to the discovery of many unprecedented phenomena in photonics, of which the optical-frequency realization is, however, still challenging. Here, surprisingly, we discover that the woodpile photonic crystals commonly used for optical frequency applications host exotic fermion-like relativistic degeneracies: a Dirac nodal line and a fourfold quadratic point, as protected by the nonsymmorphic crystalline symmetry. Deforming the woodpile photonic crystal leads to the emergence of type-II Dirac points from the fo…
We demonstrate experimentally all-optical beam steering in modulated photonic lattices induced optically by three beam interference in a biased photorefractive crystal. We identify and characterize the key physical parameters governing the beam steering, and show that the spatial resolution can be enhanced by the additional effect of nonlinear beam self-localization.
The introduction of topology unravels a new chapter of physics. Topological systems provide unique edge/interfacial quantum states which are expected to contribute to the development of novel spintronics and open the door to robust quantum computation. Optical systems can also benefit from topology. Engineering locally in real space a honeycomb photonic crystal with double Dirac cone in its photonic dispersion, topology transition in photonic band structure is induced and a pseudospin unidirectional optical channel is created and demonstrated by the backscattering immune electromagnetic transp…
We demonstrate that a photonic gauge potential, which arises from the phase degree of freedom in dynamic refractive-index modulation and hence is achormatic, can be used to achieve a broadband optical switch using the configuration of a photonic Aharonov-Bohm interferometer (ABI). The resulting ABI switch has a far larger bandwidth and lower cross talk than the conventional Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Using coupled-mode theory and full-wave numerical modeling, we compare the response of the two interferometers in the presence of nonidealities. Our results indicate the importance of the photon…
A system consisting of two slabs with different temperatures can exhibit a non-equilibrium lateral Casimir force on either one of the slabs when Lorentz reciprocity is broken in at least one of the slabs. This system constitutes a photonic heat engine that converts radiative heat into work done by the non-equilibrium lateral Casimir force. Reversely, by sliding two slabs at a sufficiently high relative velocity, heat is pumped from the slab at a lower temperature to the other one at a higher temperature. Hence the system operates as a photonic heat pump. In this work, we study the thermodynami…
Flying particle sensors in hollow-core photonic crystal fibers require accurate localization of the optically trapped microparticles. We report position measurement to micrometer-resolution, using optical frequency domain reflectometry, of two 1.65-$μ$m-diameter polystyrene particles.
Photonic nanojets have been brought into attention ten years ago for potential application in ultramicroscopy, because of its sub-wavelength resolution that can enhance detection and interaction with matter. For these novel applications under development, the optical trapping of a sphere acts as an ideal framework to employ photonic nanojets. In the present study, we generated nanojets by using a highly focused incident beam, in contrast to traditional plane waves. The method inherits the advantage of optical trapping, especially for intracellular applications, with the microsphere in equilibr…
We present a position- and time-dependent optical force theory for optomechanics of dispersive 3D photonic materials and devices. The theory applies to media including material interfaces, waveguides, and general photonic crystal structures. The theory enables calculation of the dynamical state of the coupled field-material system and the interference of this state with other excitations of the material, such as surface acoustic waves or phonons. As an example, we present computer simulations of energy and momentum flows through a silicon crystal with anti-reflective structured interfaces. Usi…
Transient fully reconfigurable photonic circuits can be introduced at the optical fiber surface with subangstrom precision. A building block of these circuits, a 0.7 angstrom-precise nano-bottle resonator, is experimentally created by local heating, translated, and annihilated.
We introduce a new "universality class" of artificial optical media - photonic hyper-crystals. These hyperbolic metamaterials with periodic spatial variation of dielectric permittivity on subwavelength scale, combine the features of optical metamaterials and photonic crystals. In particular, surface waves supported by a hyper-crystal, possess the properties of both the optical Tamm states in photonic crystals and surface plasmon polaritons at the metal-dielectric interface.
Slow-light enhanced optical detection in liquid-infiltrated photonic crystals is theoretically studied. Using a scattering-matrix approach and the Wigner-Smith delay time concept, we show that optical absorbance benefits both from slow-light phenomena as well as a high filling factor of the energy residing in the liquid. Utilizing strongly dispersive photonic crystal structures, we numerically demonstrate how liquid-infiltrated photonic crystals facilitate enhanced light-matter interactions, by potentially up to an order of magnitude. The proposed concept provides strong opportunities for impr…
Special optical structures composed of superconducting nanostructure based on the elemental type-II and layered high-Tc superconductors are proposed. The photonic band structure and the optical S-matrix are calculated for these proposed structures for different geometrical values. Such structures produce terahertz (THz) photonic band gap, which is controlled by the temperature and geometrical parameters. In addition, the proposed structures show controllable optical reflectance and transmittance in the considered terahertz range. The calculations are performed in a special frequency range in w…
We demonstrated a two-fold acceleration of the fast time constant characterising the recovery of a P-doped Indium-Phosphide Photonic Crystal all-optical gate. Time-resolved spectral analysis is compared with a three-dimensional drift-diffusion model for the carrier dynamics, demonstrating the transition from the ambipolar to the faster minority carrier dominated diffusion regime. This open the perspective for faster yet efficient nanophotonic all-optical gates.
We describe propagation of light in a gas with periodic density modulation, demonstrating photonic-crystal-like refraction with negative refraction angles. We address the role of poorly defined boundaries and damping, and derive an optical analog of the quantum adiabatic theorem. For Cs atoms in an optical lattice, we show that relying on semi-adiabatic propagation one can excite and spatially split positively and negatively refracting modes at experimentally available gas densities.
Optical isolators are an important building block in photonic computation and communication. In traditional optics, isolators are realized with magneto-optical garnets. However, it remains challenging to incorporate such materials on an integrated platform because of the difficulty in material growth and bulky device footprint. Here, we propose an ultracompact integrated isolator by exploiting graphene's magneto-optical property on a silicon-on-insulator platform. The photonic nonreciprocity is achieved because the cyclotrons in graphene experiencing different optical spin exhibit different re…
Here we demonstrate the all-optical manipulation of polymeric membranes in microfluidic environments. The membranes are decorated with handles for their use in holographic optical tweezers setups. Our results show that due to their form factor the membranes present an 8-fold increase in their mechanical stability, respect to micrometric dielectric particles. This intrinsic superior stability is expected to improve profoundly a wide range of bio-photonic applications that rely on the optical manipulation of micrometric objects while studying single-molecule mechanics and sub-cellular scale tran…
Improving and controlling the efficiency of a gain medium is one of the most challenging problems of laser research. By measuring the gain length in an opal based photonic crystal doped with laser dye, we demonstrate that optical amplification is more than twenty-fold enhanced along the Gamma-K symmetry directions of the face centered cubic photonic crystal. These results are theoretically explained by directional variations of the density of states, providing a quantitative connection between density of the states and light amplification.
