We propose a general framework to describe Planckian deviations from Special Relativity (SR) compatible with a relativistic principle. They are introduced as the leading corrections in an asymptotic approach to SR going beyond the energy power expansion of effective field theories. We discuss the conditions in which these Planckian effects might be experimentally observable in the near future, together with the non-trivial limits of applicability of this asymptotic approach that such a situation would produce, both at the very high (ultraviolet) and the very low (infrared) energy regimes.
We reformulate the Palatini action for general relativity (GR) in terms of moving frames that exhibit local Galilean covariance in a large speed of light expansion. For this, we express the action in terms of variables that are adapted to a Galilean subgroup of the $GL(n,\mathbb{R})$ structure group of a general frame bundle. This leads to a novel Palatini-type formulation of GR that provides a natural starting point for a first-order non-relativistic expansion. In doing so, we show how a comparison of Lorentzian and Newton-Cartan metric-compatibility explains the appearance of torsion in the …
We revisit the manifestly covariant large $c$ expansion of General Relativity, $c$ being the speed of light. Assuming the relativistic connection has no pole in $c^{-2}$, this expansion is known to reproduce Newton-Cartan gravity and a covariant version of Post-Newtonian corrections to it. We show that relaxing this assumption leads to the inclusion of twistless torsion in the effective non-relativistic theory. We argue that the resulting TTNC theory is an effective description of a non-relativistic regime of General Relativity that extends Newtonian physics by including strong gravitational t…
Doubly special relativity has been studied for the last twenty years as a way to go beyond the special relativistic kinematics, trying to capture residual effects of a quantum gravity theory. In particular, in doubly special relativity the Einstenian relativity principle is generalized, adding to the speed of light another relativistic invariant, the Planck energy. There are several papers in the literature showing a connection between this deformed kinematics and a curved momentum space. Here we review how such kinematics can be derived from geometrical ingredients in a rigorous way, and how …

After briefly reviewing the theory of relativistic elasticity, we expand a general elastic Lagrangian to quadratic order and compute the main parameters for the linear elasticity of relativistic solids: the longitudinal and transverse speeds of sound, the Poisson ratio, and the bulk, shear and Young moduli. Using these, we discuss which Lagrangian is the best choice to model a relativistic rigid elastic solid.
It is attempted to derive the general relativistic (GR) equation of motion for planet and its solution solely by the special relativity (SR) techniques. The motion of a planet relative to the sun and that of the sun to the planet are solved independently in special relativistic framework using the perturbation theory in the celestial mechanics. The solution reveals a nature of the structure of the spacetime under the gravitation of the sun, and then its effect on the planet's motion is examined. When the motion thus examined are compared with the one obtained by the general relativity theory i…
How does one measure the gravitational field? We give explicit answers to this fundamental question and show how all components of the curvature tensor, which represents the gravitational field in Einstein's theory of General Relativity, can be obtained by means of two different methods. The first method relies on the measuring the accelerations of a suitably prepared set of test bodies relative to the observer. The second methods utilizes a set of suitably prepared clocks. The methods discussed here form the basis of relativistic (clock) gradiometry and are of direct operational relevance for…
Spherically symmetric relativistic stars with the polytropic equation of state, which possess the local pressure anisotropy, are considered in the context of general relativity. The modified Lane-Emden equations are derived for the special ansatz for the anisotropy parameter $Δ$ in the form of the differential relation between $Δ$ and the metric function $ν$. The analytical solutions of the obtained equations are found for incompressible fluid stars. The dynamical stability of incompressible anisotropic fluid stars against radial oscillations is studied.
The general relativistic theory of elasticity is reviewed from a Lagrangian, as opposed to Eulerian, perspective. The equations of motion and stress-energy-momentum tensor for a hyperelastic body are derived from the gauge-invariant action principle first considered by DeWitt. This action is a natural extension of the action for a single relativistic particle. The central object in the Lagrangian treatment is the Landau-Lifshitz radar metric, which is the relativistic version of the right Cauchy-Green deformation tensor. We also introduce relativistic definitions of the deformation gradient, G…
Regge-Teitelboim embedding gravity is the modified gravity based on a simple string-inspired geometrical principle: our spacetime is considered here as a 4-dimensional surface in a flat bulk. This theory is similar to the recently popular theory of mimetic gravity: the modification of gravity appears in both theories as a result of the change of variables in the action of General Relativity. Embedding gravity, as well as mimetic gravity, can be used in explaining the dark matter mystery since, in both cases, the modified theory can be presented as General Relativity with additional fictitious …
The notions of time and causality are revisited, as well as the A- and B-theory of time, in order to determine which theory of time is most compatible with relativistic spacetimes. By considering orientable spacetimes and defining a time-orientation, we formalize the concepts of a time-series in relativistic spacetimes; A-theory and B-theory are given mathematical descriptions within the formalism of General Relativity. As a result, in time-orientable spacetimes, the notions of events being in the future and in the past, which are notions of A-theory, are found to be more fundamental than the …
Oscillons are dense objects that may be copiously produced in the preheating period after inflation, during which what role general relativity might play is largely unknown. We investigate the oscillon preheating scenario in full general relativity, and compare the general-relativistic simulations with the traditional ones done in an FLRW background. We find that in certain parameter regions the general-relativistic corrections are significant, producing more and denser oscillons, and can be strong enough to collapse the oscillons to black holes.
In this paper, we briefly present RELXILL_NK, the first and currently only readily available model of the relativistic reflection spectrum of black hole accretion disks that includes non-Kerr solutions for the black hole spacetime, thus allowing for tests of the Kerr hypothesis and GR. RELXILL_NK makes use of a general relativistic ray-tracing code to calculate the relativistic effects of any well-behaved, stationary, axisymmetric, and asymptotically flat black hole spacetime, while the disk physics is handled through the non-relativistic X-ray reflection code XILLVER. A number of different fl…
Finslerian extension of the theory of relativity implies that space-time can be not only in an amorphous state which is described by Riemann geometry but also in ordered, i.e. crystalline states which are described by Finsler geometry. Transitions between various metric states of space-time have the meaning of phase transitions in its geometric structure. These transitions together with the evolution of each of the possible metric states make up the general picture of space-time manifold dynamics. It is shown that there are only two types of curved Finslerian spaces endowed with local relativi…
We study relativistic star solutions in second-order generalized Proca theories characterized by a $U(1)$-breaking vector field with derivative couplings. In the models with cubic and quartic derivative coupling, the mass and radius of stars become larger than those in general relativity for negative derivative coupling constants. This phenomenon is mostly attributed to the increase of star radius induced by a slower decrease of the matter pressure compared to general relativity. There is a tendency that the relativistic star with a smaller mass is not gravitationally bound for a low central d…
The center of mass and spin for isolated sources of gravitational radiation that move at relativistic speeds are defined. As a first step, we also present these definitions in flat space. This contradicts some general wisdom given in textbooks claiming that such definitions are not covariant and thus, have no physical meaning. We then generalize the definitions to asymptotically flat spacetimes giving their equations of motion when gravitational radiation is emitted by the isolated sources. The resulting construction has some similarities with the Mathisson-Papapetrou equations which describes…
We find possible cosmological models of the Polynomial Affine Gravity described by connections that are either compatible or not with a metric. When possible, we compare them with those of General Relativity. We show that the set of cosmological vacuum solutions in General Relativity are a subset of the solutions of Polynomial Affine Gravity. In our model the cosmological constant appears as an integration constant, and additionally, we show that some forms of matter can be emulated by the affine structure---even in the metric compatible case. In the case of connections not compatible with a m…
