In this paper, we briefly present RELXILL_NK, the first and currently only readily available model of the relativistic reflection spectrum of black hole accretion disks that includes non-Kerr solutions for the black hole spacetime, thus allowing for tests of the Kerr hypothesis and GR. RELXILL_NK makes use of a general relativistic ray-tracing code to calculate the relativistic effects of any well-behaved, stationary, axisymmetric, and asymptotically flat black hole spacetime, while the disk physics is handled through the non-relativistic X-ray reflection code XILLVER. A number of different flavors are available within RELXILL_NK; we summarize and compare these flavors using the Johannsen metric for the black hole spacetime.
We present the public release version of relxill_nk, an X-ray reflection model for testing the Kerr hypothesis and general relativity. This model extends the relxill model that assumes the black hole spacetime is described by the Kerr metric. We also present relxilllp_nk, the first non-Kerr X-ray reflection model with a lamppost corona configuration, as well as all other models available in the full relxill_nk package. In all models the relevant relativistic effects are calculated through a general relativistic ray-tracing code that can be applied to any well-behaved, stationary, axisymmetric,…
Einstein's theory of general relativity was proposed over 100 years ago and has successfully passed a large number of observational tests in the weak field regime. However, the strong field regime is largely unexplored, and there are many modified and alternative theories that have the same predictions as Einstein's gravity for weak fields and present deviations when gravity becomes strong. RELXILL_NK is the first relativistic reflection model for probing the spacetime metric in the vicinity of astrophysical black holes and testing Einstein's gravity in the strong field regime. Here we present…
Very steep reflection emissivity profiles in the inner part of accretion disks are commonly found in the analysis of X-ray observations of black hole binaries and AGN, but there is some debate about their exact origin. While steep reflection emissivity profiles can be naturally produced by compact coronae close to black holes, the measured radial emissivity parameter can be further increased by the radial disk ionization profile when the theoretical model assumes a disk with constant ionization. In this paper, we implement the possibility of a radial disk ionization profile in the reflection m…
Astrophysical black hole candidates are thought to be the Kerr black holes of general relativity. However, macroscopic deviations from the Kerr background are predicted by a number of scenarios beyond Einstein's gravity. X-ray reflection spectroscopy can be a powerful tool to probe the strong gravity region of these objects and test the Kerr black hole hypothesis. Here I briefly review the state of the art of this line of research and I present some constraints on possible deviations from the Kerr metric obtained with the new X-ray reflection model relxill_nk and XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and Swift …
Recently, we have extended the X-ray reflection model relxill to test the spacetime metric in the strong gravitational field of astrophysical black holes. In the present Letter, we employ this extended model to analyze XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and Swift data of the supermassive black hole in 1H0707-495 and test deviations from a Kerr metric parametrized by the Johannsen deformation parameter $α_{13}$. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that the spacetime metric around the black hole in 1H0707-495 is described by the Kerr solution.
We analyze simultaneous observations with NuSTAR and Swift of the black hole binary GX 339-4 in which we clearly detect both a strong thermal component and prominent relativistic reflection features. We employ NKBB and RELXILL_NK, which are the state of the art of, respectively, the thermal and reflection models to test the Kerr black hole hypothesis. We obtain unprecedented precise measurements of the Johannsen deformation parameter $α_{13}$: $α_{13} = -0.012_{-0.039}^{+0.011}$ (lamppost coronal geometry) and $α_{13} = -0.010_{-0.018}^{+0.024}$ (broken power-law emissivity profile) at a 90% c…
Einstein's gravity has been extensively tested in the weak field regime, primarily with experiments in the Solar System and observations of binary pulsars, and current data agree well with theoretical predictions. On the other hand, strong gravity is largely unexplored and there are a number of theories beyond Einstein's gravity that make the same predictions for weak fields and present deviations only when gravity becomes strong. The best laboratory for testing strong gravity is the spacetime around astrophysical black holes. X-ray reflection spectroscopy can be a powerful tool to probe the s…
X-ray reflection spectroscopy is a powerful tool for probing the strong gravity region of black holes and can be used for testing general relativity in the strong field regime. Simplifications of the available relativistic reflection models limit the capability of performing accurate measurements of the properties of black holes. In this paper, we present an extension of the model RELXILL_NK in which the accretion disk has a finite thickness rather than being infinitesimally thin. We employ the accretion disk geometry proposed by Taylor & Reynolds (2018) and we construct relativistic reflectio…
We present the study of a sample of seven "bare" active galactic nuclei (AGN) observed with Suzaku. We interpret the spectrum of these sources with a relativistic reflection component and we employ our model RELXILL_NK to test the Kerr nature of their supermassive black holes. We constrain the Johannsen deformation parameters $α_{13}$ and $α_{22}$, in which the Kerr metric is recovered when $α_{13} = α_{22} = 0$. All our measurements are consistent with the hypothesis that the spacetime geometry around these supermassive objects is described by the Kerr solution. For some sources, we obtain qu…
X-ray reflection spectroscopy is a promising technique for testing general relativity in the strong field regime, as it can be used to test the Kerr black hole hypothesis. In this context, the parametrically deformed black hole metrics proposed by Konoplya, Rezzolla \& Zhidenko (Phys. Rev. D93, 064015, 2016) form an important class of non-Kerr black holes. We implement this class of black hole metrics in \textsc{relxill\_nk}, which is a framework we have developed for testing for non-Kerr black holes using X-ray reflection spectroscopy. We perform a qualitative analysis of the effect of the le…
The Novikov-Thorne model is the standard framework for the description of geometrically thin and optically thick accretion disks around black holes and is widely used to study the electromagnetic spectra of accreting black holes. One of the assumptions of the model is that the particles of the gas move on nearly-geodesic circular orbits on the equatorial plane. In this work, we propose to test the Keplerian velocity of the particles in the accretion disk using X-ray reflection spectroscopy. We present a modified version of RELXILL in which we introduce a phenomenological parameter, $α$, to qua…
We employ the accretion disk reflection model RELXILL_NK to test the spacetime geometry around the stellar-mass black hole in GRS 1915+105. We adopt the Johannsen metric with the deformation parameters $α_{13}$ and $α_{22}$, for which the Kerr solution is recovered when $α_{13} = α_{22} = 0$. We analyze a NuSTAR observation of 2012, obtaining vanishing and non-vanishing values of the deformation parameters depending on the astrophysical model adopted. Similar difficulties were not found in our previous tests with other sources. The results of this work can shed light on the choice of sources s…
In a previous paper, we presented an extension of our reflection model RELXILL_NK to include the finite thickness of the accretion disk following the prescription in Taylor & Reynolds (2018). In this paper, we apply our model to fit the 2013 simultaneous observations by NuSTAR and XMM-Newton of the supermassive black hole in MCG-06-30-15 and the 2019 NuSTAR observation of the Galactic black hole in EXO 1846-031. The high-quality data of these spectra had previously led to precise black hole spin measurements and very stringent constraints on possible deviations from the Kerr metric. We find th…
In this paper we present RELXILLDGRAD_NK, a relativistic reflection model in which the electron density of the accretion disk is allowed to have a radial power-law profile. The ionization parameter has also a non-constant radial profile and is calculated self-consistently from the electron density and the emissivity. We show the impact of the implementation of the electron density gradient in our model by analyzing a NuSTAR spectrum of the Galactic black hole in EXO 1846-031 during its last outburst in 2019 and a putative future observation of the same source with Athena and eXTP. For the NuST…
There are many simplifications in current relativistic reflection models and this introduces systematic uncertainties in the measurement of the properties of the source. In this paper, we study the impact of the radiation crossing the equatorial plane between the black hole and the inner edge of the accretion disk; that is, the radiation produced by the other side of the disk or circling the black hole one or more times (higher order disk images). For slow-rotating black holes with a larger plunging region, the effect is not very sensitive to the exact inclination angle of the disk. For fast-r…
Relativistic reflection features in the X-ray spectra of black hole binaries and AGNs originate from illumination of the inner part of the accretion disk by a hot corona. In the presence of high quality data and with the correct astrophysical model, X-ray reflection spectroscopy can be quite a powerful tool to probe the strong gravity region, study the morphology of the accreting matter, measure black hole spins, and even test Einstein's theory of general relativity in the strong field regime. There are a few relativistic reflection models available today and developed by different groups. All…
X-ray reflection spectroscopy is potentially a powerful tool to probe the spacetime geometry around astrophysical black holes and test general relativity in the strong field regime. However, precision tests of general relativity are only possible if we employ the correct astrophysical model and we can limit the systematic uncertainties. It is thus crucial to select the sources and the observations most suitable for these tests. In this work, we analyze simultaneous observations of XMM-Newton and NuSTAR of the supermassive black hole in Fairall 9. This source has a number of properties that mak…
Relativistic reflection features in the X-ray spectra of black hole binaries and AGNs are thought to be produced through illumination of a cold accretion disk by a hot corona. In this work, we assume that the corona has the shape of an infinitesimally thin disk with its central axis the same as the rotational axis of the black hole. The corona can either be static or corotate with the accretion disk. We calculate the disk's emissivity profiles and iron line shapes for a set of coronal radii and heights. We incorporate these emissivity profiles into RELXILL_NK and we simulate some observations …
In this paper, we review our current efforts to test General Relativity in the strong field regime by studying the reflection spectrum of supermassive black holes. So far we have analyzed 11 sources with observations of NuSTAR, Suzaku, Swift, and XMM-Newton. Our results are consistent with general relativity, according to which the spacetime metric around astrophysical black holes should be well approximated by the Kerr solution. We discuss the systematic uncertainties in our model and we present a preliminary study on the impact of some of them on the measurement of the spacetime metric.
Astrophysical black hole systems are the ideal laboratories for testing Einstein's theory of gravity in the strong field regime. We have recently developed a framework which uses the reflection spectrum of black hole systems to perform precision tests of general relativity by testing the Kerr black hole hypothesis. In this paper, we analyze XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations of the supermassive black hole in the Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG-06-30-15 with our disk reflection model. We consider the Johannsen metric with the deformation parameters $α_{13}$ and $α_{22}$, which quantify deviations from the…
Most of the X-ray emission from luminous accreting black holes emerges from within 20 gravitational radii. The effective emission radius is several times smaller if the black hole is rapidly spinning. General Relativistic effects can then be very important. Large spacetime curvature causes strong lightbending and large gravitational redshifts. The hard X-ray, power-law-emitting corona irradiates the accretion disc generating an X-ray reflection component. Atomic features in the reflection spectrum allow gravitational redshifts to be measured. Time delays between observed variations in the powe…
Astrophysical black holes are ideal laboratories for testing Einstein's theory of general relativity in the strong field regime. In this manuscript, we present an analysis of Suzaku and NuSTAR spectra of the black hole binary Cygnus X-1 using RELXILL_NK. Unlike our previous study on Cygnus X-1 with NuSTAR data, here we are able to constrain the Johannsen deformation parameter $α_{13}$. However, despite the high energy resolution near the iron line provided by Suzaku, our constraints on the Kerr metric from Cygnus X-1 are not very stringent in comparison with those that have been obtained from …
We report on the spectroscopic analysis of the black hole binary GX 339-4 during its recent 2017-2018 outburst, observed simultaneously by the Swift and NuSTAR observatories. Although during this particular outburst the source failed to make state transitions, and despite Sun constraints during the peak luminosity, we were able to trigger four different observations sampling the evolution of the source in the hard state. We show that even for the lowest luminosity observations the NuSTAR spectra show clear signatures of X-ray reprocessing (reflection) in an accretion disk. Detailed analysis of…
The exterior geometry of a neutron star can be approximated by relativistic multipole moments of a parametrized metric using Ernst potential formalism. This spacetime can be tested with electromagnetic wave observation of astrophysical black holes. In the present paper, I simulate X-ray reflection spectra of a thin accretion disk with future X-ray missions. The purpose of this work is to understand whether X-ray reflection spectroscopy can distinguish the neutron star from the Kerr solution of General Relativity. I found that for the higher value of spin and multipole moment parameters, there …
Einstein-Maxwell dilaton-axion gravity is a string-inspired model arising from the low energy effective action of heterotic string theory and an important candidate as alternative to General Relativity. Recently, some authors have explored its astrophysical implications in the spectra of accreting black holes and inferred the constraint $r_2 < 0.1$, where $r_2 \ge 0$ is the black hole dilaton charge and General Relativity is recovered for $r_2 = 0$. In the present paper, we study the impact of a non-vanishing black hole dilaton charge on the reflection spectrum of the disk. From the analysis o…
Recently, two of us have found a family of singularity-free rotating black hole solutions in Einstein's conformal gravity. These spacetimes are characterized by three parameters: the black hole mass $M$, the black hole spin angular momentum $J$, and a parameter $L$ that is not specified by the theory but can be expected to be proportional to the black hole mass $M$. The Kerr black hole solution of Einstein's gravity is recovered for $L = 0$. In a previous paper, we showed that X-ray data of astrophysical black holes require $L/M < 1.2$. In the present paper, we report the results of a more sop…
Full interpretation of data from gravitational wave observations will require accurate numerical simulations of source systems, particularly binary black hole mergers. A leading approach to improving accuracy in numerical relativity simulations of black hole systems is through fixed or adaptive mesh refinement techniques. We describe a manifestation of numerical interface truncation error which appears as slowly converging, artificial reflections from refinement boundaries in a broad class of mesh refinement implementations, potentially compromising the effectiveness of mesh refinement techniq…
Einstein's theory of General Relativity predicts that the spacetime metric around astrophysical black holes is described by the Kerr solution. In this work, we employ state-of-the-art in relativistic reflection modeling to analyze a selected set of NuSTAR spectra of Galactic black holes to obtain the most robust and precise constraints on the Kerr black hole hypothesis possible today. Our constraints are much more stringent than those from other electromagnetic techniques, and with some sources we get stronger constraints than those currently available from gravitational waves.
We continue exploring the constraining capabilities of X-ray reflection spectroscopy to test the Kerr-nature of astrophysical black holes and we present the results of our analysis of two NuSTAR observations of Cygnus X-1 in the soft state. We find that the final measurement can strongly depend on the assumption of the intensity profile. We conclude that Cygnus X-1 is not suitable for tests of general relativity using X-ray reflection spectroscopy and we discuss the desired properties of a source to be a good candidate for our studies.
We present the analysis of several observations of the black hole binary GX 339--4 during its bright intermediate states from two different outbursts (2002 and 2004), as observed by RXTE/PCA. We perform a consistent study of its reflection spectrum by employing the relxill family of relativistic reflection models to probe the evolutionary properties of the accretion disk including the inner disk radius ($R_{\rm in}$), ionization parameter ($ξ$), temperatures of the inner disk ($T_{\rm in}$), corona ($kT_{\rm e}$), and its optical depth ($τ$). Our analysis indicates that the disk inner edge app…
The recently released images of the supermassive black holes in the M87 galaxy and the galaxy of our own make probing black hole spacetimes and testing general relativity (GR) possible. The violation of equatorial reflection symmetry of black hole spacetimes is clearly a smoking gun of physics beyond GR. In this paper, we place constraints on the violation of black hole reflection symmetry using the bounds on the ring size of the Sgr A* black hole images, which are consistent with the critical curve radius predicted in GR within $\sim10\%$. Adopting a theory-agnostic framework, we consider a K…
Relativistic reflection features are commonly observed in the X-ray spectra of accreting black holes. In the presence of high quality data and with the correct astrophysical model, X-ray reflection spectroscopy can be quite a powerful tool to probe the strong gravity region, study the morphology of the accreting matter, measure black hole spins, and possibly test Einstein's theory of general relativity in the strong field regime. In the last decade, there has been significant progress in the development of the analysis of these features, thanks to more sophisticated astrophysical models and ne…
Some of the assumptions of cosmology, as based on the simplest version of General Relativity, are discussed. It is argued that by slight modifications of standard gravitation theory, our notion of the sources of gravity {the right hand side of Einstein's equations{, could be something radically different from what is usually expected. One example is exhibited to prove the point, and some consequences are discussed.
We construct exact solutions to the Bianchi equations on a flat spacetime background. When the constraints are satisfied, these solutions represent in- and outgoing linearized gravitational radiation. We then consider the Bianchi equations on a subset of flat spacetime of the form [0,T] x B_R, where B_R is a ball of radius R, and analyze different kinds of boundary conditions on \partial B_R. Our main results are: i) We give an explicit analytic example showing that boundary conditions obtained from freezing the incoming characteristic fields to their initial values are not compatible with the…

Einstein's gravity has undergone extensive tests in the weak field gravitational limit, with results in agreement with theoretical predictions. There exist theories beyond general relativity (GR) which modify gravity in the strong field regime but agree with GR in the weak field. Astrophysical black holes are believed to be described by the Kerr metric and serve as suitable candidates to test strong gravity with electromagnetic radiation. We perform such a test by fitting one Suzaku dataset of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy Mrk 335 with X-ray reflection spectroscopy, using the Johanns…
One of the main features of covariant theories, in particular general relativity, is that the field equation possesses gauge freedom associated with global diffeomorphisms of the underlying manifold. I shall explain here how the hole argument is a reflection of this gauge freedom. Finally I shall point out some implications of the hole argument and extend the hole argument to the case of permutable theories. As covariant theories provides a general mathematical framework for classical physics, permutable theories provide the language for quantum physics. Permutable theories are defined functor…
We study the reflection coefficient associated with a wave that scatters off various black holes in general relativity. We show that for large energies, compared to the scale set by the curvature, the reflection coefficient is suppressed exponentially with the energy. We find that the exponent is fixed by the singularity of the black hole to be $\frac12(β+β_{in})$ where $β$ is the inverse Hawking temperature and $β_{in}$ is the inverse temperature associated with the inner horizon. We also study the reflection coefficient associated with extremal D3-branes in string theory. In that case, the e…
We discuss the possibility of a dimensional reduction of the Einstein equations in S3 black-hole lattices. It was reported in previous literature that the evolution of spaces containing curves of local, discrete rotational and reflection Symmetry (LDRRS) can be carried out via a system of ODEs along these curves. However, 3+1 Numerical Relativity computations demonstrate that this is not the case, and we show analytically that this is due to the presence of a tensorial quantity which is not suppressed by the symmetry. We calculate the term analytically, and verify numerically for an 8-black-ho…
We consider the scattering of gravitational waves off a Schwarzschild black hole in $f(R)$ gravity. We show that the reflection and transmission coefficients for tensor waves are the same as in General Relativity. While the scalar waves, which are not present in General Relativity, demonstrate interesting features. The equation that governs these scalar waves can be reduced to a Volterra integral equation. Analysis of this equation shows that a larger fraction of these waves are reflected compared to what one obtains for tensors. This may provide a novel observational signature for fourth orde…
X-ray reflection spectroscopy is a powerful technique for probing the nature of gravity around black holes in the so-called strong field regime. One of the most popular of such probes is to look at theory-agnostic deviations away from the Kerr solution, which is the only astrophysically relevant black hole solution within classical general relativity, in order to verify whether astrophysical black holes are described by the Kerr metric. We have recently extended our X-ray reflection spectroscopy framework to a class of very general axisymmetric non-Kerr black holes proposed by Konoplya, Rezzol…
Within classical general relativity, a particle cannot reach the horizon of a black hole during a finite time, in the reference frame of an external observer; a particle inside cannot escape from a black hole; and the horizon does not produce any reflection. We argue that these processes may possibly be allowed in the quantum world. It is known that quantum mechanics allows pair creation at the horizon (one particle inside, another particle outside) and Hawking radiation. One can extend this idea to propose other processes. Tunneling of an external particle inside black hole may be produced by…
We study the foliation of a $D$-dimensional spherically symmetric black-hole spacetime with $D\ge 5$ by two kinds of one-parameter family of maximal hypersurfaces: a reflection-symmetric foliation with respect to the wormhole slot and a stationary foliation that has an infinitely long trumpet-like shape. As in the four-dimensional case, the foliations by the maximal hypersurfaces have the singularity avoidance nature irrespective of dimensionality. This indicates that the maximal slicing condition will be useful for simulating higher-dimensional black-hole spacetimes in numerical relativity. F…
In 4 spacetime dimensions there is a well known proof that for any asymptotically flat, stationary, and axisymmetric vacuum solution of Einstein's equation there exists a "$t$-$ϕ$" reflection isometry that reverses the direction of the timelike Killing vector field and the direction of the axial Killing vector field. However, this proof does not generalize to higher spacetime dimensions. Here we consider asymptotically flat, stationary, and axisymmetric (i.e., having one or more commuting rotational isometries) black hole spacetimes in vacuum general relativity in $d \geq 4$ spacetime dimensio…
We reflect on the information paradigm in quantum and gravitational physics and on how it may assist us in approaching quantum gravity. We begin by arguing, using a reconstruction of its formalism, that quantum theory can be regarded as a universal framework governing an observer's acquisition of information from physical systems taken as information carriers. We continue by observing that the structure of spacetime is encoded in the communication relations among observers and more generally the information flow in spacetime. Combining these insights with an information-theoretic Machian view,…
We show how Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations of the supermassive object at the center of M87 can constrain deviations from General Relativity (GR) in a relatively model-independent way. We focus on the class of theories whose deviations from GR modify black holes into alternative compact objects whose properties approach those of an ordinary black hole sufficiently far from the would-be event horizon. We examine this class for two reasons: ($i$) they tend to reproduce black-hole expectations for astrophysical accretion disks (and so do not undermine the evidence linking black holes t…
Gravitational wave `echoes' during black-hole merging events have been advocated as possible signals of modifications to gravity in the strong-field (but semiclassical) regime. In these proposals the observable effect comes entirely from the appearance of nonzero reflection probability at the horizon, which vanishes for a standard black hole. We show how to apply EFT reasoning to these arguments, using and extending earlier work for localized systems that relates choices of boundary condition to the action for the physics responsible for these boundary conditions. EFT reasoning applied to this…
