Let $K$ be a totally real number field and let $B$ be a totally definite quaternion algebra over $K$. In this article, given a set of representatives for ideal classes for a maximal order in $B$, we show how to construct in an efficient way a set of representatives of ideal classes for any Bass order in $B$. The algorithm does not require any knowledge of class numbers, and improves the equivalence checking process by using a simple calculation with global units. As an application, we compute ideal classes representatives for an order of level 30 in an algebra over the real quadratic field $\Q[\sqrt{5}]$.
Deciding whether an ideal of a number field is principal and finding a generator is a fundamental problem with many applications in computational number theory. For indefinite quaternion algebras, the decision problem reduces to that in the underlying number field. Finding a generator is hard, and we present a heuristically subexponential algorithm.
We prove many simultaneous congruences mod 2 for elliptic and Hilbert modular forms among forms with different Atkin--Lehner eigenvalues. The proofs involve the notion of quaternionic $S$-ideal classes and the distribution of Atkin--Lehner signs among newforms.
We provide algorithms to count and enumerate representatives of the (right) ideal classes of an Eichler order in a quaternion algebra defined over a number field. We analyze the run time of these algorithms and consider several related problems, including the computation of two-sided ideal classes, isomorphism classes of orders, connecting ideals for orders, and ideal principalization. We conclude by giving the complete list of definite Eichler orders with class number at most 2.
An ideal is a classical object of study in the field of algebraic number theory. In maximal quadratic orders of number fields, ideals usually represented by the $\mathbb Z$-basis. This form of representation is used in most of the algorithms for ideal manipulation. However, this is not the only option, as an ideal can also be represented by its generating set. Moreover, in certain quadratic orders of the ring of integral quaternions, every ideal can be represented by a single quaternion, called a pseudo generator. In this paper, we develop algorithms which allow us to manipulate ideals using s…
Let $\cO$ be a maximal order in a definite quaternion algebra over $\mathbb{Q}$ of prime discriminant $p$, and $\ell$ a small prime. We describe a probabilistic algorithm, which for a given left $O$-ideal, computes a representative in its left ideal class of $\ell$-power norm. In practice the algorithm is efficient, and subject to heuristics on expected distributions of primes, runs in expected polynomial time. This breaks the underlying problem for a quaternion analog of the Charles-Goren-Lauter hash function, and has security implications for the original CGL construction in terms of supersi…
We study quadratic forms over totally real number fields by using an associated ring of quaternions. We examine some properties of residue class rings of these quaternions and use geometry of numbers to prove that certain ideals of the ring of quaternions contain elements of a small norm. We prove that $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2+xy+xz+xw$ is universal over $\mathbb{Q}(ζ_7+ζ_7^{-1})$ and that $x^2+xy+y^2+z^2+zw+w^2$ represents all totally positive multiples of certain special elements.
We study a form of refined class number formula (resp. type number formula) for maximal orders in totally definite quaternion algebras over real quadratic fields, by taking into consideration the automorphism groups of right ideal classes (resp. unit groups of maximal orders). For each finite noncyclic group $G$, we give an explicit formula for the number of conjugacy classes of maximal orders whose unit groups modulo center are isomorphic to $G$, and write down a representative for each conjugacy class. This leads to a complete recipe (even explicit formulas in special cases) for the refined …
Let $L$ be a separable quadratic extension of either $\mathbb{Q}$ or $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$. We propose efficient algorithms for finding isomorphisms between quaternion algebras over $L$. Our techniques are based on computing maximal one-sided ideals of the corestriction of a central simple $L$-algebra.
In this paper we determine the number of endomorphism rings of superspecial abelian surfaces over a field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of odd degree over $\mathbb{F}_p$ in the isogeny class corresponding to the Weil $q$-number $\pm\sqrt{q}$. This extends earlier works of T.-C. Yang and the present authors on the isomorphism classes of these abelian surfaces, and also generalizes the classical formula of Deuring for the number of endomorphism rings of supersingular elliptic curves. Our method is to explore the relationship between the type and class numbers of the quaternion orders concerned. We study the Pi…
We prove an integral version of the classical Albert-Brauer-Hasse-Noether theorem regarding quaternion algebras over number fields. Let $\mathfrak A$ be a quaternion algebra over a number field $K$ and assume that $\mathfrak A$ satisfies the Eichler condition; that is, there exists an archimedean prime of $K$ which does not ramify in $\mathfrak A$. Let $Ω$ be a commutative, quadratic $\mathcal{O}_K$-order and let $\mathcal{R}\subset \mathfrak A$ be an order of full rank. Assume that there exists an embedding of $Ω$ into $\mathcal R$. We describe a number of criteria which, if satisfied, imply …
We relate proper isometry classes of maximal lattices in a totally definite quaternary quadratic space (V,q) with trivial discriminant to certain equivalence classes of ideals in the quaternion algebra representing the Clifford invariant of (V,q). This yields a good algorithm to enumerate a system of representatives of proper isometry classes of lattices in genera of maximal lattices in (V,q).
Let N = 1 mod 4 be the negative of a prime, K=Q(sqrt{N}) and O_K its ring of integers. Let D be a prime ideal in O_K of prime norm congruent to 3 modulo 4. Under these assumptions, there exists Hecke characters $ψ_{\D}$ of K with conductor $(\D)$ and infinite type $(1,0)$. Their L-series L(ψ_\D,s)$ are associated to a CM elliptic curve E(N,\D) defined over the Hilbert class field of $K$. We will prove a Waldspurger-type formula for L(ψ_\D,s) of the form L(ψ_\D,1) = Ω\sum_{[\A],I} r(\D,[\A],I) m_{[\A],I}([\D]) where the sum is over class ideal representatives I of a maximal order in the quatern…
Let $J^{65}$ be the Jacobian of the Shimura curve attached to the indefinite quaternion algebra over $\mathbb{Q}$ of discriminant $65$. We study the isogenies $J_0(65)\rightarrow J^{65}$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, whose existence was proved by Ribet. We prove that there is an isogeny whose kernel is supported on the Eisenstein maximal ideals of the Hecke algebra acting on $J_0(65)$, and moreover the odd part of the kernel is generated by a cuspidal divisor of order $7$, as is predicted by a conjecture of Ogg.
We apply a study of orders in quaternion algebras, to the differential geometry of Riemann surfaces. The least length of a closed geodesic on a hyperbolic surface is called its systole, and denoted syspi_1. P. Buser and P. Sarnak constructed Riemann surfaces X whose systole behaves logarithmically in the genus g(X). The Fuchsian groups in their examples are principal congruence subgroups of a fixed arithmetic group with rational trace field. We generalize their construction to principal congruence subgroups of arbitrary arithmetic surfaces. The key tool is a new trace estimate valid for an arb…
We fix $\ell$ a prime and let $M$ be an integer such that $\ell\not|M$; let $f\in S_2(Γ_1(M\ell^2))$ be a newform supercuspidal of fixed type related to the nebentypus, at $\ell$ and special at a finite set of primes. Let $\TT^ψ$ be the local quaternionic Hecke algebra associated to $f$. The algebra $\TT^ψ$ acts on a module $\mathcal M^ψ_f$ coming from the cohomology of a Shimura curve. Applying the Taylor-Wiles criterion and a recent Savitt's theorem, $\TT^ψ$ is the universal deformation ring of a global Galois deformation problem associated to $\orho_f$. Moreover $\mathcal M^ψ_f$ is free of …
Let $B$ be a central simple algebra of degree $n$ over a number field $K$, and $L\subset B$ a strictly maximal subfield. We say that the ring of integers $\mathcal O_L$ is "selective" if there exists an isomorphism class of maximal orders in $B$ no element of which contains $\mathcal O_L$. Many authors have worked to characterize the degree to which selectivity occurs, first in quaternion algebras, and more recently in higher-rank algebras. In the present work, we consider a local variant of the selectivity problem and applications. We first prove a theorem characterizing which maximal orders …
