Sine-Gordon kinks are a much studied integrable system that possesses multi-soliton solutions. Recent studies on sine-Gordon kinks with space-dependent square-well-type potentials have revealed interesting dynamics of a single kink interacting with wells and barriers. In this paper, we study a class of smooth space-dependent potentials and discuss the dynamics of one kink in the presence of different wells. We also present values for the critical velocity for different types of barriers. Furthermore, we study two kinks interacting with various wells and describe interesting trajectories such as double-trapping, kink knock-out and double-escape.
Kink dynamics in spatially discrete nonlinear Klein-Gordon systems is considered. For special choices of the substrate potential, such systems support continuous translation orbits of static kinks with no (classical) Peierls-Nabarro barrier. It is shown that these kinks experience, nevertheless, a lattice-periodic confining potential, due to purely quantum effects anaolgous to the Casimir effect of quantum field theory. The resulting ``quantum Peierls-Nabarro potential'' may be calculated in the weak coupling approximation by a simple and computationally cheap numerical algorithm, which is app…
Recent studies have emphasized the important role that a shape deformability of scalar-field models pertaining to the same class with the standard $ϕ^4$ field, can play in controlling the production of a specific type of breathing bound states so-called oscillons. In the context of cosmology, the built-in mechanism of oscillons suggests that they can affect the standard picture of scalar ultra-light dark matter. In the present work kink scatterings are investigated in a parametrized model of bistable system admitting the classical $ϕ^4$ field as an asymptotic limit, with focus on the formation…
A spatially discrete version of the general kink-bearing nonlinear Klein-Gordon model in (1+1) dimensions is constructed which preserves the topological lower bound on kink energy. It is proved that, provided the lattice spacing h is sufficiently small, there exist static kink solutions attaining this lower bound centred anywhere relative to the spatial lattice. Hence there is no Peierls-Nabarro barrier impeding the propagation of kinks in this discrete system. An upper bound on h is derived and given a physical interpretation in terms of the radiation of the system. The construction, which wo…
In this paper we study the dynamics of $φ^{4}$ kinks, generated by considering a particular argument of $φ^{4}$ field, in the presence of class of smooth space dependent potentials ie. barriers and wells. Various type of these potentials are produced via two-parameter family. These parameters control the shapes, widths and heights of such potentials. The dynamics are presented through the plotting of the trajectories. We compare numerical calculated critical velocities to theoretical calculations.
It was recently proposed a novel discretization for nonlinear Klein-Gordon field theories in which the resulting lattice preserves the topological (Bogomol'nyi) lower bound on the kink energy and, as a consequence, has no Peierls-Nabarro barrier even for large spatial discretizations (h~1.0). It was then suggested that these ``topological discrete systems'' are a natural choice for the numerical study of continuum kink dynamics. Giving particular emphasis to the phi^4 theory, we numerically investigate kink-antikink scattering and breather formation in these topological lattices. Our results i…
We study kink-antikink collisions in a particular case of the double sine-Gordon model depending on only one parameter $r$. The scattering process of large kink-antikink shows the changing of the topological sector. For some parameter intervals we observed two connected effects: the production of up to five antikink-kink pairs and up to three solitary oscillations. The scattering process for small kink-antikink has several possibilities: the changing of the topological sector, one-bounce collision, two-bounce collision, or formation of a bion state. In particular, we observed for small values …
In this work we examine kink-antikink collisions in two distinct hyperbolic models. The models depend on a deformation parameter, which controls two main characteristics of the potential with two degenerate minima: the height of the barrier and the values of the minima. In particular, the rest mass of the kinks decreases monotonically as the deformation parameter increases, and we identify the appearance of a gradual suppression of two bounce windows in the kink scattering and the production of long lived oscillons. The two effects are reported in connection to the presence of more than one vi…
In this article, we first briefly review the solution of Z(2) kink solitons. Then we construct some multi-kink soliton configurations which are static and show their few features which are actually important to characterize their stability conditions. Not only that this show also the particle characteristics of these kink configurations in these solitonic configurations. Then we will talk about dynamical kinks and show the affect of dynamics in the expression of force exerted by the neighbouring kink and anti-kink on each other in the multi-kink configurations. We have also defined an algebra …
We study final states in the scattering of kinks and antikinks of the $φ^8$ field-theoretic model. We use the initial conditions in the form of two, three or four static or moving kinks. In the numerical experiments we observe a number of different processes such as emergence of static and moving oscillons, change of the kink's topological sector, scattering of an oscillon by a kink, production of kink-antikink pairs in oscillon-oscillon collisions. In antikink-kink collisions for asymmetric kinks, we found resonance phenomena -- escape windows.
We investigate numerically kink collisions in a $1+1$ dimensional scalar field theory with multiple vacua. The domain wall model we are interested in involves two scalar fields and a potential term built from an asymmetric double well and (double) sine-Gordon potential together with an interaction term. Depending on the initial kink setup and impact velocities, the model allows for a wide range of scattering behaviours. Kinks can repel each other, annihilate, form true or false domain walls and reflect off each other.
The theory of superconductivity can be divided into two groups depending on whether it has multi-kink solutions. For example, the BCS theory and the Gross-Neveu model have metastable multi-kink solutions whereas the conventional Ginzburg-Landau theory without higher-derivative interactions does not have any multi-kink solutions. In this paper, we systematically examine the solutions of the holographic superconductor model to find out which group the model falls into. We show that the holographic superconductor model has metastable multi-kink solutions. In this sense, we find that the holograph…
We study collisions of coherent structures in higher-order field-theoretic models, such as the $ϕ^8$, $ϕ^{10}$ and $ϕ^{12}$ ones. The main distinguishing feature, of the example models considered herein, is that the collision arises due to the long-range interacting algebraic tails of these solitary waves. We extend the approach to suitably initialize the relevant kinks, in the additional presence of finite initial speed, in order to minimize the dispersive wave radiation potentially created by their slow spatial decay. We find that, when suitably initialized, these models still feature the mu…
We study simultaneous collisions of two, three, and four kinks and antikinks of the $ϕ^6$ model at the same spatial point. Unlike the $ϕ^4$ kinks, the $ϕ^6$ kinks are asymmetric and this enriches the variety of the collision scenarios. In our numerical simulations we observe both reflection and bound state formation depending on the number of kinks and on their spatial ordering in the initial configuration. We also analyze the extreme values of the energy densities and the field gradient observed during the collisions. Our results suggest that very high energy densities can be produced in mult…
We study scattering properties of topological solitons in two classes of models, which are generalizations of the Sine-Gordon model and which have recently been proposed by Bazeia et al. These two classes of models depend on an integer parameter n which, when n=2(for the first class) and n=1 (for the second class), reduce to the Sine-Gordon model. We take the soliton solutions of these models (generalizations of the 'kink' solution of the Sine-Gordon model) and consider their scattering on potential holes and barriers. We present our results for n=1,...6. We find that, like in the Sine Gordon …
We show that spectral walls are common phenomena in the dynamics of kinks in (1+1) dimensions. They occur in models based on two or more scalar fields with a nonempty Bogomol'nyi-Prasam-Sommerfield (BPS) sector, hosting two zero modes, where they are one of the main factors governing the soliton dynamics. We also show that spectral walls appear as singularities of the dynamical vibrational moduli space.
In this work we present an approach which can be systematically used to construct nonlinear systems possessing analytical multi-kink profile configurations. In contrast with previous approaches to the problem, we are able to do it by using field potentials which are considerably smoother than the ones of Doubly Quadratic family of potentials. This is done without losing the capacity of writing exact analytical solutions. The resulting field configurations can be applied to the study of problems from condensed matter to brane world scenarios.
We study collisions of two, three, and four kinks of the double sine-Gordon model. The initial conditions are taken in a special form in order to provide collision of all kinks in one point. We obtain dependences of the maximal energy densities on the model parameter. We also analyze the final states observed in these collisions.

We investigate the dynamics of the kinks that emerge in a one-dimensional scalar field theory with an octic potential containing a quartic minimum and two quadratic minima. We show analytically that kink-antikink and kink-kink pairs interact with a force that scales with the fourth power of the inter-kink distance, and calculate its strength. This is done using two different techniques. The first employs a collective coordinate method to approximately solve the equation of motion for the profile of an accelerating kink. The second is based on modifying the potential to one that is able to supp…
A class of thick branes in the background of sine-Gordon kinks with a scalar potential $V(ϕ)=p(1+\cos\frac{2ϕ}{q})$ was constructed by R. Koley and S. Kar [Classical Quantum Gravity \textbf{22}, 753 (2005)]. In this paper, in the background of the warped geometry, we investigate the issue of localization of spin half fermions on these branes in the presence of two types of scalar-fermion couplings: $η\barΨϕΨ$ and $η\barΨ\sinϕΨ$. By presenting the mass-independent potentials in the corresponding Schrödinger equations, we obtain the lowest Kaluza--Klein (KK) modes and a continuous gapless spectr…
A (1+1)-dimensional quantum field theory with a degenerate vacuum (in infinite volume) can contain particles, known as kinks, which interpolate between different vacua and have nontrivial restrictions on their multi-particle Hilbert space. Assuming such a theory to be integrable, we show how to calculate the multi-kink energy levels in finite volume given its factorizable $S$-matrix. In massive theories this can be done exactly up to contributions due to off-shell and tunneling effects that fall off exponentially with volume. As a first application we compare our analytical predictions for the…
Massive maximally-supersymmetric sigma models are shown to exhibit multiple static kink-domain wall solutions that preserve 1/2 of the supersymmetry. The kink moduli space admits a natural Kahler metric. We examine in some detail the case when the target of the sigma model is given by the co-tangent bundle of CP^n equipped with the Calabi metric, and we show that there exist BPS solutions corresponding to n kinks at arbitrary separation. We also describe how 1/4-BPS charged and intersecting domain walls are described in the low-energy dynamics on the kink moduli space. We comment on the simila…
We study a scalar field model in a two dimensional space-time with a generalized $ϕ^4_G$ potential which has four minima, obtaining novel kink solutions with well defined properties although the potential is non-analytical at the origin. The model contains a control parameter $δ$ that breaks the degeneracy of the potential minima, giving rise to two different phases for the system. The $δ<0$ phases do not possess solitary wave solutions. At the transition point $δ=0$ all the potential minima are degenerate and three different kink solutions result. As the transition to the $δ>0$ phase takes pl…
The Gross-Neveu model with ${\rm U}_L(N_f)\times{\rm U}_R(N_f)$ chiral symmetry is reconsidered in the large $N_c$ limit. The known analytical solution for the time dependent interaction of any number of twisted kinks and breathers is cast into a more revealing form. The ($x,t$)-dependent factors are isolated from constant coefficients and twist matrices. These latter generalize the twist phases of the single flavor model. The crucial tool is an identity for the inverse of a sum of two square matrices, derived from the known formula for the determinant of such a sum.
We find the general solution to the time-dependent Hartree-Fock problem for the Gross-Neveu models, with both discrete (GN2) and continuous (NJL2) chiral symmetry. We find new multi-baryon, multi-breather and twisted breather solutions, and show that all GN2 baryons and breathers are composed of constituent twisted kinks of the NJL2 model.
We construct a fermion system in a multi-kink-antikink soliton background, and present in an explicit form all its trapped configurations (bound state solutions) as well as scattering states. This is achieved by exploiting an exotic N=4 centrally extended nonlinear supersymmetry of completely isospectral pairs of reflectionless Schrodinger systems with potentials to be n-soliton solutions for the Korteweg-de Vries equation. The obtained reflectionless Dirac system with a position-dependent mass is shown to possess its own exotic nonlinear supersymmetry associated with the matrix Lax-Novikov op…
We consider the S-matrix bootstrap of four dimensional scattering amplitudes with $O(3)$ symmetry and no bound-states. We explore the allowed space of scattering lengths which parametrize the interaction strength at threshold of the various scattering channels. Next we consider an application of this formalism to pion physics. A signature of pions is that they are derivatively coupled leading to (chiral) zeros in their scattering amplitudes. In this work we explore the multi-dimensional space of chiral zeros positions, scattering length values and resonance mass values. Interestingly, we encou…
We present a new type of brane inflation motivated by multi-kink solitonic solutions of a scalar field in five dimensions. In the thin brane limit, we analyze a non-static configuration in which the distance between two parallel domain walls decreases. We show that the ensuing spacetime is inflationary, both on the branes, and, for certain potentials, in the bulk. We argue that this inflationary regime is transitory and can end via a brane merger into a single kink solution - a flat, thick brane RS2 universe. This scenario is quite general; we show that any potential which supports a single fl…
Darboux transformations are employed in construction and analysis of Dirac Hamiltonians with pseudoscalar potentials. By this method, we build a four parameter class of reflectionless systems. Their potentials correspond to composition of complex kinks, also known as twisted kinks, that play an important role in the $1+1$ Gross-Neveu and Nambu-Jona-Lasinio field theories. The twisted kinks turn out to be multi-solitonic solutions of the integrable AKNS hierarchy. Consequently, all the spectral properties of the Dirac reflectionless systems are reflected in a non-trivial conserved quantity, whi…
Quantum-disordering a discrete-symmetry breaking state by condensing domain-walls can lead to a trivial symmetric insulator state. In this work, we show that if we bind a 1D representation of the symmetry (such as a charge) to the intersection point of several domain walls, condensing such modified domain-walls can lead to a non-trivial symmetry-protected topological (SPT) state. This result is obtained by showing that the modified domain-wall condensed state has a non-trivial SPT invariant -- the symmetry-twist dependent partition function. We propose two different kinds of field theories tha…
