We study the potential theory of a large class of infinite dimensional Lévy processes, including Brownian motion on abstract Wiener spaces. The key result is the construction of compact Lyapunov functions, i.e. excessive functions with compact level sets. Then many techniques from classical potential theory carry over to this infinite dimensional setting. Thus a number of potential theoretic properties and principles can be proved, answering long standing open problems even for the Brownian motion on abstract Wiener space, as e.g. formulated by R. Carmona in 1980. In particular, we prove the analog of the known result, that the Cameron-Martin space is polar, in the Lévy case and apply the technique of controlled convergence to solve the Dirichlet problem with general (not necessarily continuous) boundary data.
We consider probability measures on $\mathbb{R}^{\infty}$ and study optimal transportation mappings for the case of infinite Kantorovich distance. Our examples include 1) quasi-product measures, 2) measures with certain symmetric properties, in particular, exchangeable and stationary measures. We show in the latter case that existence problem for optimal transportation is closely related to ergodicity of the target measure. In particular, we prove existence of the symmetric optimal transportation for a certain class of stationary Gibbs measures.
We review the probabilistic properties of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes in Hilbert spaces driven by Lévy processes. The emphasis is on the different contexts in which these processes arise, such as stochastic partial differential equations, continuous-state branching processes, generalised Mehler semigroups and operator self-decomposable distributions. We also examine generalisations to the case where the driving noise is cylindrical.
The so-called "supOU" processes, namely the superpositions of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck type processes are stationary processes for which one can specify separately the marginal distribution and the dependence structure. They can have finite or infinite variance. We study the limit behavior of integrated infinite variance supOU processes adequately normalized. Depending on the specific circumstances, the limit can be fractional Brownian motion but it can also be a process with infinite variance, a Lévy stable process with independent increments or a stable process with dependent increments. We show t…
For many stochastic diffusion processes with mean field interaction, convergence of the rescaled total mass processes towards a diffusion process is known. Here we show convergence of the so-called finite system scheme for interacting jump-type processes known as mutually catalytic branching processes with infinite branching rate. Due to the lack of second moments the rescaling of time is different from the finite rate mutually catalytic case. The limit of rescaled total mass processes is identified as the finite rate mutually catalytic branching diffusion. The convergence of rescaled processe…
We observe the Galton-Watson Branching Processes. Limit properties of transition functions and their convergence to invariant measures are investigated.
We establish the existence and pathwise uniqueness of regime-switching diffusion processes in an infinite state space, which could be time-inhomogeneous and state-dependent. Then the strong Feller properties of these processes are investigated by using the theory of parabolic differential equations and dimensional-free Harnack inequalities.
SupOU processes are superpositions of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck type processes with a random intensity parameter. They are stationary processes whose marginal distribution and dependence structure can be specified independently. Integrated supOU processes have then stationary increments and satisfy central and non-central limit theorems. Their moments, however, can display an unusual behavior known as "intermittency". We show here that intermittency can also appear when the processes have a heavy tailed marginal distribution and, in particular, an infinite variance.
We consider an indecomposable Galton-Watson branching process with countably infinitely many types. Assuming that the process is critical and allowing for infinite variance of the offspring sizes of some (or all) types of particles we describe the asymptotic behavior of the survival probability of the process and establish a Yaglom-type conditional limit theorem for the infinite-dimensional vector of the number of particles of all types.
We present a central limit theorem for stationary random fields that are short-range dependent and asymptotically independent. As an application, we present a central limit theorem for an infinite family of interacting Itô-type diffusion processes.
In this paper we aim to construct infinite dimensional versions of well established Piecewise Deterministic Monte Carlo methods, such as the Bouncy Particle Sampler, the Zig-Zag Sampler and the Boomerang Sampler. In order to do so we provide an abstract infinite-dimensional framework for Piecewise Deterministic Markov Processes (PDMPs) with unbounded event intensities. We further develop exponential convergence to equilibrium of the infinite dimensional Boomerang Sampler, using hypocoercivity techniques. Furthermore we establish how the infinite dimensional Boomerang Sampler admits a finite di…
The paper studies a class of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes on the classical Wiener space. These processes are associated with a diffusion type Dirichlet form whose corresponding diffusion operator is unbounded in the Cameron-Martin space. It is shown that the distributions of certain finite dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes converge weakly to the distribution of such an infinite dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. For the infinite dimensional processes, the ordinary scalar quadratic variation is calculated. Moreover, relative to the stochastic calculus via regularization, the scalar …
We extend the Kalman-Bucy filter to the case where both the system and observation processes are driven by finite dimensional Lévy processes, but whereas the process driving the system dynamics is square-integrable, that driving the observations is not; however it remains integrable. The key technique used is approximation by processes having bounded jumps.
In this paper we address the problem of rare-event simulation for heavy-tailed Lévy processes with infinite activities. We propose a strongly efficient importance sampling algorithm that builds upon the sample path large deviations for heavy-tailed Lévy processes, stick-breaking approximation of extrema of Lévy processes, and the randomized debiasing Monte Carlo scheme. The proposed importance sampling algorithm can be applied to a broad class of Lévy processes and exhibits significant improvements in efficiency when compared to crude Monte-Carlo method in our numerical experiments.
Starting from a sequence of independent Wright-Fisher diffusion processes on $[0,1]$, we construct a class of reversible infinite dimensional diffusion processes on $\DD_\infty:= \{{\bf x}\in [0,1]^\N: \sum_{i\ge 1} x_i=1\}$ with GEM distribution as the reversible measure. Log-Sobolev inequalities are established for these diffusions, which lead to the exponential convergence to the corresponding reversible measures in the entropy. Extensions are made to a class of measure-valued processes over an abstract space $S$. This provides a reasonable alternative to the Fleming-Viot process which does…
The present paper continues the study of infinite dimensional calculus via regularization, started by C. Di Girolami and the second named author, introducing the notion of weak Dirichlet process in this context. Such a process X, taking values in a Banach space H, is the sum of a local martingale and a suitable orthogonal process. The concept of weak Dirichlet process fits the notion of convolution type processes, a class including mild solutions for stochastic evolution equations on infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces and in particular of several classes of stochastic partial differential equ…
Let $Φ$ be a nuclear space and let $Φ'_β$ denote its strong dual. In this work we establish the one-to-one correspondence between infinitely divisible measures on $Φ'_β$ and Lévy processes taking values in $Φ'_β$. Moreover, we prove the Lévy-Itô decomposition, the Lévy-Khintchine formula and the existence of càdlàg versions for $Φ'_β$-valued Lévy processes. A characterization for Lévy measures on $Φ'_β$ is also established. Finally, we prove the Lévy-Khintchine formula for infinitely divisible measures on $Φ'_β$.
Parametric and nonparametric inference for stochastic processes driven by a fractional Brownian motion were investigated in Mishura (2008) and Prakasa Rao(2010) among others. Similar problems for processes driven by an infinite dimensional fractional Brownian motion were studied in Prakasa Rao (2004,2013), Cialenco (2009) and others. Parametric estimation for processes driven by infinite dimensional mixed fractional Brownian motion is discussed in this article.
The dimension-free Harnack inequality and uniform heat kernel upper/lower bounds are derived for a class of infinite-dimensional GEM processes, which was introduced in \cite{FW} to simulate the two-parameter GEM distributions. In particular, the associated Dirichlet form satisfies the super log-Sobolev inequality which strengthens the log-Sobolev inequality derived in \cite{FW}. To prove the main results, explicit Harnack inequality and super Poincaré inequality are established for the one-dimensional Wright-Fisher diffusion processes. The main tool of the study is the coupling by change of me…
We take up the issue of deriving the limit as $n\to\infty$ of the GREM-like K process on a tree with $n$ levels. Under specific conditions on the parameters of the process, implying the martingality of a modification of the underlying clock process sequences, we obtain infinite level clock processes as nontrivial limits of the finite level clocks, and use them to construct a process on a suitable product space which is then shown to be the limit of the $n$ level K processes as $n\to\infty$. Some properties of the limiting, infinite level K process are established, like an expression for the as…
Some probabilistic aspects of the number variance statistic are investigated. Infinite systems of independent Brownian motions and symmetric alpha-stable processes are used to construct new examples of processes which exhibit both divergent and saturating number variance behaviour. We derive a general expression for the number variance for the spatial particle configurations arising from these systems and this enables us to deduce various limiting distribution results for the fluctuations of the associated counting functions. In particular, knowledge of the number variance allows us to introdu…
In this paper free harmonic analysis tools are used to study parabolic iteration in the complex upper half-plane. The main result here is a complete characterization for the norming constants in the monotonic central limit theorem. This allows us to construct a new class of conservative and ergodic measure-preserving transformations on the real line with Lebesgue measure. Among all, we mention that the generalized Boole transformation with infinitely many poles is shown to be conservative, as long as its residues are summable.
We investigate an application of slowly varying functions (in sense of Karamata) in the theory of Markov branching process. We treat the critical case so that the infinitesimal generating function of the process has the infinite second moment, but it regularly varies with the remainder. We improve the Basic Lemma of the theory of critical Markov branching process and refine known limit results.
We consider a particle system with weights and the scaling limits derived from its occupation time. We let the particles perform independent recurrent Lévy motions and we assume that their initial positions and weights are given by a Poisson point process. In the limit we obtain a number of recently discovered stationary stable self-similar processes recently studied in [SAM1] and [SAM2]. We also observe very different limit processes depending on whether the function, whose occupation time is considered, integrates to zero or not.
In this note we identify the distributional limits of non-negative, ergodic stationary processes, showing that all are possible. Consequences for infinite ergodic theory are also explored and new examples of distributionally stable- and $α$-rationally ergodic tranformations are presented.
We construct a four parameter (z, z', a, b) family of Markov dynamics that preserve the z-measures on the boundary of the branching graph for classical Lie groups of type B, C, D. Our guiding principle is the "method of intertwiners" used previously in [7] to construct Markov processes that preserve the zw-measures.
The large deviations of an infinite moving average process with exponentially light tails are very similar to those of an i.i.d. sequence as long as the coefficients decay fast enough. If they do not, the large deviations change dramatically. We study this phenomenon in the context of functional large, moderate and huge deviation principles.
We consider diffusion processes in Hilbert spaces with constant non-degenerate diffusion operators and show that, under broad assumptions on the drift, the transition probabilities of the process are positive on ellipsoids associated with the diffusion operator. This is an infinite-dimensional analogue of positivity of densities of transition probabilities. Our results apply to diffusions corresponding to stochastic partial differential equations.
We prove distributional limit theorems and one-sided laws of the iterated logarithm for a class of positive, mixing, stationary, stochastic processes which contains those obtained from non-integrable observables over certain piecewise expanding maps. This is done by extending Darling-Kac theory to a suitable family of infinite measure preserving transformations.
We study the asymptotic behavior of empirical processes generated by measurable bounded functions of an infinite source Poisson transmission process when the session length have infinite variance. In spite of the boundedness of the function, the normalized fluctuations of such an empirical process converge to a non-Gaussian stable process. This phenomenon can be viewed as caused by the long-range dependence in the transmission process. Completing previous results on the empirical mean of similar types of processes, our results on non-linear bounded functions exhibit the influence of the limit …
Consider the following forest-fire process on a connected graph. Each site of the graph can be either occupied or vacant. A vacant site becomes occupied with rate 1. A site is ignited with rate lambda, and its whole occupied cluster burns instantaneously. The purpose of this paper is to show the existence of a stationary distribution for forest-fire processes on Z^d, for d >= 2. We define a distribution as a limit of a sequence of invariant distributions of finite volume forest-fire processes, and then show it is a stationary distribution for forest-fire processes on Z^d, d>=2.
We present two examples of finite-alphabet, infinite excess entropy processes generated by invariant hidden Markov models (HMMs) with countable state sets. The first, simpler example is not ergodic, but the second is. It appears these are the first constructions of processes of this type. Previous examples of infinite excess entropy processes over finite alphabets admit only invariant HMM presentations with uncountable state sets.
In this paper we define an infinite-dimensional controlled piecewise deterministic Markov process (PDMP) and we study an optimal control problem with finite time horizon and unbounded cost. This process is a coupling between a continuous time Markov Chain and a set of semilinear parabolic partial differential equations, both processes depending on the control. We apply dynamic programming to the embedded Markov decision process to obtain existence of optimal relaxed controls and we give some sufficient conditions ensuring the existence of an optimal ordinary control. This study, which constitu…
In 1964 R.Gangolli published a Lévy-Khintchine type formula which characterised $K$ bi-invariant infinitely divisible probability measures on a symmetric space $G/K$. His main tool was Harish-Chandra's spherical functions which he used to construct a generalisation of the Fourier transform of a measure. In this paper we use generalised spherical functions (or Eisenstein integrals) and extensions of these which we construct using representation theory to obtain such a characterisation for arbitrary infinitely divisible probability measures on a non-compact symmetric space. We consider the examp…
We investigate the probabilistic and analytic properties of Volterra processes constructed as pathwise integrals of deterministic kernels with respect to the Hölder continuous trajectories of Hilbert-valued Gaussian processes. To this end, we extend the Volterra sewing lemma from \cite{HarangTindel} to the two dimensional case, in order to construct two dimensional operator-valued Volterra integrals of Young type. We prove that the covariance operator associated to infinite dimensional Volterra processes can be represented by such a two dimensional integral, which extends the current notion of…
We investigate the randomized Karlin model with parameter $β\in(0,1)$, which is based on an infinite urn scheme. It has been shown before that when the randomization is bounded, the so-called odd-occupancy process scales to a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $β/2\in(0,1/2)$. We show here that when the randomization is heavy-tailed with index $α\in(0,2)$, then the odd-occupancy process scales to a $(β/α)$-self-similar symmetric $α$-stable process with stationary increments.
This paper concerns the Vertex Reinforced Jump Process (VRJP) and its representations as a Markov process in random environment. We show that all possible representations of the VRJP as a mixture of Markov processes can be expressed in a similar form, using a random potential and harmonic functions for an associated operator. This allows to show that the VRJP on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ (with certain initial conditions) has a unique representation, by proving that an associated Martin boundary is trivial. Moreover, on infinite trees, we construct a family of representations, that are all different when …
We provide a new proof of the existence of Gibbs point processes with infinite range interactions, based on the compactness of entropy levels. Our main existence theorem holds under two assumptions. The first one is the standard stability assumption, which means that the energy of any finite configuration is super-linear with respect to the number of points. The second assumption is the so-called intensity regularity, which controls the long range of the interaction via the intensity of the process. This assumption is new and introduced here since it is well adapted to the entropy approach. As…
We consider conservative ergodic measure preserving transformations on infinite measure spaces and investigate the asymptotic behaviour of distorted return time processes with respect to sets satisfying a type of Darling-Kac condition. We identify two critical cases for which we prove uniform distribution laws. For this we introduce the notion of uniformly returning sets and discuss some of their properties.
Some examples of translation invariant site percolation processes on the $\Z^2$ lattice are constructed, the most far-reaching example being one that satisfies uniform finite energy (meaning that the probability that a site is open given the status of all others is bounded away from $0$ and $1$) and exhibits a.s. the coexistence of an infinite open cluster and an infinite closed cluster. Essentially the same example shows that coexistence is possible between an infinite open cluster and an infinite closed cluster that are both robust under i.i.d. thinning.
We consider a natural destruction process of an infinite recursive tree by removing each edge after an independent exponential time. The destruction up to time t is encoded by a partition $Π$(t) of N into blocks of connected vertices. Despite the lack of exchangeability, just like for an exchangeable fragmentation process, the process $Π$ is Markovian with transitions determined by a splitting rates measure r. However, somewhat surprisingly, r fails to fulfill the usual integrability condition for the dislocation measure of exchangeable fragmentations. We further observe that a time-dependent …
Two generalizations of Itô formula to infinite-dimensional spaces are given. The first one, in Hilbert spaces, extends the classical one by taking advantage of cancellations, when they occur in examples and it is applied to the case of a group generator. The second one, based on the previous one and a limit procedure, is an Itô formula in a special class of Banach spaces, having a product structure with the noise in a Hilbertian component, again the key point is the extension due to a cancellation. This extension to Banach spaces and in particular the specific cancellation are motivated by pat…
Consider a uniformly sampled random $d$-regular graph on $n$ vertices. If $d$ is fixed and $n$ goes to $\infty$ then we can relate typical (large probability) properties of such random graph to a family of invariant random processes (called "typical" processes) on the infinite $d$-regular tree $T_d$. This correspondence between ergodic theory on $T_d$ and random regular graphs is already proven to be fruitful in both directions. This paper continues the investigation of typical processes with a special emphasis on entropy. We study a natural notion of micro-state entropy for invariant processe…
A univariate Hawkes process is a simple point process that is self-exciting and has clustering effect. The intensity of this point process is given by the sum of a baseline intensity and another term that depends on the entire past history of the point process. Hawkes process has wide applications in finance, neuroscience, social networks, criminology, seismology, and many other fields. In this paper, we prove a functional central limit theorem for stationary Hawkes processes in the asymptotic regime where the baseline intensity is large. The limit is a non-Markovian Gaussian process with depe…
A probability model is underdetermined when there is no rational reason to assign a particular infinitesimal value as the probability of single events. Pruss claims that hyperreal probabilities are underdetermined. The claim is based upon external hyperreal-valued measures. We show that internal hyperfinite measures are not underdetermined. The importance of internality stems from the fact that Robinson's transfer principle only applies to internal entities. We also evaluate the claim that transferless ordered fields (surreals, Levi-Civita field, Laurent series) may have advantages over hyperr…
We introduce polynomial processes taking values in an arbitrary Banach space $B$ via their infinitesimal generator $L$ and the associated martingale problem. We obtain two representations of the (conditional) moments in terms of solutions of a system of ODEs on the truncated tensor algebra of dual respectively bidual spaces. We illustrate how the well-known moment formulas for finite dimensional or probability-measure valued polynomial processes can be deduced in this general framework. As an application we consider polynomial forward variance curve models which appear in particular as Markovi…
Fractional Poisson processes, a rapidly growing area of non-Markovian stochastic processes, are useful in statistics to describe data from counting processes when waiting times are not exponentially distributed. We show that the fractional Kolmogorov-Feller equations for the probabilities at time t can be representated by an infinite linear system of ordinary differential equations of first order in a transformed time variable. These new equations resemble a linear version of the discrete coagulation-fragmentation equations, well-known from the non-equilibrium theory of gelation, cluster-dynam…
Scaled type Markov renewal processes generalize classical renewal processes: renewal times come from a one parameter family of probability laws and the sequence of the parameters is the trajectory of an ergodic Markov chain. Our primary interest here is the asymptotic distribution of the Markovian parameter at time t \to \infty. The limit, of course, depends on the stationary distribution of the Markov chain. The results, however, are essentially different depending on whether the expectations of the renewals are finite or infinite. If the expectations are uniformly bounded, then we can provid…
In this paper approximation methods for infinite-dimensional Levy processes, also called (time-dependent) Levy fields, are introduced. For square integrable fields beyond the Gaussian case, it is no longer given that the one-dimensional distributions in the spectral representation with respect to the covariance operator are independent. When simulated via a Karhunen-Loeve expansion a set of dependent but uncorrelated one-dimensional Levy processes has to be generated. The dependence structure among the one-dimensional processes ensures that the resulting field exhibits the correct point-wise m…
We introduce spatially explicit stochastic processes to model multispecies host-symbiont interactions. The host environment is static, modeled by the infinite percolation cluster of site percolation. Symbionts evolve on the infinite cluster through contact or voter type interactions, where each host may be infected by a colony of symbionts. In the presence of a single symbiont species, the condition for invasion as a function of the density of the habitat of hosts and the maximal size of the colonies is investigated in details. In the presence of multiple symbiont species, it is proved that th…
A Palm hierarchy for determinantal point processes with the confluent hypergeometric kernel, the decomposing measures in the problem of harmonic analysis on the infinite-dimensional unitary group
