Transparent glasses in the system 3BaO-3TiO2-B2O3 (BTBO) were fabricated via the conventional melt-quenching technique. The as-quenched samples were confirmed to be glassy by differential thermal analysis (DTA) technique. The thermal parameters were evaluated using non-isothermal DTA experiments. Kauzmann temperature was found to be 759 K based on heating rate dependent glass transition and crystallization temperatures. Theoretical relation for temperature dependent viscosity was proposed for these glasses and glass-ceramics.
Er-doped phosphate glasses were fabricated by melt-quenching technique. The changes in their thermal, structural and luminescence properties with the addition of Al2O3, TiO2 or ZnO were studied. Physical and thermal properties were investigated through density measurement and differential thermal analysis. Structural characterization was performed using the Raman and Infrared spectroscopy. In order to study the influence of the composition on the luminescence properties of the glasses, the refractive index, the luminescence spectra and the lifetime values were measured. The results show that w…
Predicting the thermal conductivity of glasses from first principles has hitherto been a prohibitively complex problem. In fact, past works have highlighted challenges in achieving computational convergence with respect to length and/or time scales using either the established Allen-Feldman or Green-Kubo formulations, endorsing the concept that atomistic models containing thousands of atoms -- thus beyond the capabilities of first-principles calculations -- are needed to describe the thermal conductivity of glasses. In addition, these established formulations either neglect anharmonicity (Alle…
Vapour-deposited organic glasses are currently in use in many optoelectronic devices. Their operation temperature is limited by the glass transition temperature of the organic layers and thermal management strategies become increasingly important to improve the lifetime of the device. Here we report the unusual finding that molecular orientation heavily influences heat flow propagation in glassy films of small molecule organic semiconductors. The thermal conductivity of vapour-deposited thin-film semiconductor glasses is anisotropic and controlled by the deposition temperature. We compare our …
A recent paper by Juntao Huo et al [Chin. Phys. Lett. 39 (2022) 0464011] reported a correlation between the entropy of mixing (and the corresponding energy state) and the thermal stability and mechanical parameters, for three Zr-Ti-Cu-Ni-Be metallic glasses (MG) including a high-entropy one (HEMG). The authors dismissed a possible compositional contribution to the variations of the thermal stability and mechanical parameters studied.
Cycling of a metallic glass between ambient and cryogenic temperatures can induce higher-energy states characteristic of glass formation on faster cooling. This rejuvenation, unexpected because it occurs at small macroscopic strains and well below the temperatures of thermally induced structural change, is important, for example, in improving plasticity. Molecular-dynamics simulations elucidate the mechanisms by which thermal cycling can induce relaxation (reaching lower energy) as well as rejuvenation. Thermal cycling, over tens of cycles, drives local atomic rearrangements progressively eras…
It is a persistent problem in condensed matter physics that glasses exhibit vibrational and thermal properties that are markedly different from those of crystals. While recent works have advanced our understanding of vibrational excitations in glasses at the harmonic approximation limit, efforts in understanding finite-temperature anharmonic processes have been limited. It is well known that phonons in crystals couple through phonon-phonon interactions, an extremely efficient mechanism for anharmonic decay that is also important in glasses. Here, however, we show that an additional anharmonic …
The influence of repeated thermal cycling on mechanical properties, structural relaxation, and evolution of the potential energy in binary glasses is investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. We consider a binary mixture with strongly non-additive cross interactions, which is annealed across the glass transition with different cooling rates and then exposed to one thousand thermal cycles at constant pressure. We found that during the first few hundred transient cycles, the potential energy minima after eachcycle gradually decrease and the structural relaxation proceeds via collective,…

The structural relaxation, potential energy states, and mechanical properties of a model glass subjected to thermal cycling are investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. We study a non-additive binary mixture which is annealed with different cooling rates from the liquid phase to a low temperature well below the glass transition. The thermal treatment is applied by repeatedly heating and cooling the system at constant pressure, thus temporarily inducing internal stresses upon thermal expansion. We find that poorly annealed glasses are relocated to progressively lower levels of potenti…
Processing results of measurements of linear thermal expansion coefficients and linear thermal expansion of two brands of borosilicate glasses --- LK5 and Borofloat 33 --- are presented. The linear thermal expansion of glass samples have been determined in the temperature range 130 to 800 K (minus 143 to 526 $°$C) using thermomechanical analyzer TMA7100. Relative imprecision of indirectly measured linear thermal expansion coefficients and linear thermal expansion of both glass brands is less than $\pm$5 % and $\pm$3 % respectively. Polynomial equations, approximating temperature dependence of …
Chalcogenide glasses possess several outstanding properties that enable several ground breaking applications, such as optical discs, infrared cameras, and thermal imaging systems. Despite the ubiquitous usage of these glasses, the composition property relationships in these materials remain poorly understood. Here, we use a large experimental dataset comprising approx 24000 glass compositions made of 51 distinct elements from the periodic table to develop machine learning models for predicting 12 properties, namely, annealing point, bulk modulus, density, Vickers hardness, Littleton point, You…
Crystals and glasses exhibit fundamentally different heat conduction mechanisms: the periodicity of crystals allows for the excitation of propagating vibrational waves that carry heat, as first discussed by Peierls; in glasses, the lack of periodicity breaks Peierls' picture and heat is mainly carried by the coupling of vibrational modes, often described by a harmonic theory introduced by Allen and Feldman. Anharmonicity or disorder are thus the limiting factors for thermal conductivity in crystals or glasses; hitherto, no transport equation has been able to account for both. Here, we derive s…
Cryogenic rejuvenation in metallic glasses reported in Ketov et al 's experiment (Nature(2015)524,200) has attracted much attention, both in experiments and numerical studies. The atomic mechanism of rejuvenation has been conjectured to be related to the heterogeneity of the glassy state, but the quantitative evidence is still elusive. Here we use molecular dynamics simulations of a model metallic glass to investigate the heterogeneity in the local thermal expansion. We then combine the resulting spatial distribution of thermal expansion with a continuum mechanics calculation to infer the inte…
We show that the experimentally observed behavior of thermal conductivity of dielectric glasses over a wide temperature range can be explained by a combination of two scattering processes. The first one comes from the phonon scattering due to biaxial dipoles of wedge disclinations while the second one is the Rayleigh type scattering. The results obtained support the cluster picture suggested earlier for glassy materials.
Many structural glasses feature static and dynamic mechanical properties that can depend strongly on glass formation history. The degree of universality of this history-dependence, and what it is possibly affected by, are largely unexplored. Here we show that the variability of elastic properties of simple computer glasses under thermal annealing depends strongly on the strength of attractive interactions between the glasses' constituent particles -- referred to here as glass `stickiness'. We find that in stickier glasses the stiffening of the shear modulus with thermal annealing is strongly s…
Among the many physical properties, the amorphous state manifests itself in the most spectacular way in heat transport. Anomalously low thermal conductivity, its low-temperature dependence as a function of temperature, the presence of a plateau of thermal conductivity, all are definitely different when compared with the ordered state of crystals. For this reason, the microscopic mechanisms from which these surprising behaviors may emerge have been the subject of intensive theoretical research and even more extensive experimental research. These investigations have led to the detection of a hug…
An atomistic understanding of annealing embrittlement is a longstanding issue for metallic glasses, which is still lacking due to the insurmountable gap between the thermal history of atomic models and laboratory-made samples. Here, based on a thermal-cycling annealing method that can vary the effective quenching rate over ten orders of magnitude, we perform an atomistic study of the ductile-brittle transition in a ternary model metallic glass, which can be keyed to the annealing embrittlement in bulk metallic glasses. We reveal that thermal annealing can effectively obliterate thermally activ…
At temperatures well below their glass transition, the deformation properties of bulk metallic glasses are characterised by a sharp transition from elasticity to plasticity, a reproducible yield stress, and an approximately linear decrease of this stress with increasing temperature. In the present work it shown that when the well known properties of the under-cooled liquid regime, in terms of the underlying potential energy landscape, are assumed to be also valid at low temperature, a simple thermal activation model is able to reproduce the observed onset of macro-scopic yield. At these temper…
Optical properties of a series of Gd2O3 doped sodium zinc tellurite [xGd2O3-(0.8-x) TeO2-0.1Na2O-0.1ZnO] glasses prepared by conventional melt quenching method have been studied. UV-Vis spectrophotometer was used in the integrating sphere mode at room temperature to study the effect of Gd2O3 doping on the optical band gap, refractive index, dielectric constant and susceptibility within the wavelength range from 230-800 nm. Density is measured using Archimedes principle for the calculation of molar volume, molar refraction, polarizability and metallization criterion of the glasses.
Inorganic glasses, produced by the melt-quenching of a concoction of minerals, compounds, and elements, can possess unique optical and elastic properties along with excellent chemical, and thermal durability. Despite the ubiquitous use of glasses for critical applications such as touchscreen panels, windshields, bioactive implants, optical fibers and sensors, kitchen and laboratory glassware, thermal insulators, nuclear waste immobilization, optical lenses, and solid electrolytes, their composition-structure-property relationships remain poorly understood. Here, exploiting largescale experimen…
Here we show that a new class of glasses composed of heavy metal oxides involving transition metals (V$_\text {2}$O$_\text{}$5-TeO$_\text{2}$), can surprisingly be designed from very basic tools using topology and rigidity of their underlying molecular networks. When investigated as a function of composition, such glasses display abrupt changes in network packing and enthalpy of relaxation at Tg, underscoring presence of flexible to rigid elastic phase transitions. We find that these elastic phases are fully consistent with polaronic nature of electronic conductivity at high V$_\text{2}$O$_\te…
Identifying heterogeneous structures in glasses --- such as localized soft spots --- and understanding structure-dynamics relations in these systems remain major scientific challenges. Here we derive an exact expression for the local thermal energy of interacting particles (the mean local potential energy change due to thermal fluctuations) in glassy systems by a systematic low-temperature expansion. We show that the local thermal energy can attain anomalously large values, inversely related to the degree of softness of localized structures in a glass, determined by a coupling between internal…
Recent studies (J. Alloys Compd. 695 (2017) 2661) of the electronic structure and properties of $(TiZrNbCu)_{1-x}$$Ni_{x}$ (x$\leq$0.25) amorphous high entropy alloys (a-HEA) have been extended to x=0.5 in order to compare behaviours of a-HEA and conventional Ni-base metallic glasses (MG). The amorphous state of all samples was verified by thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction (XRD). XRD indicated a probable change in local atomic arrangements, i.e. short-range-order (SRO) for x$\geq$0.35. Simultaneously, thermal parameters, such as the first crystallization temperature $T_{x}$ and the liquid…
The two-step heat treatment method is used to measure the steady state crystal nucleation rate and induction time as a function of temperature in BaO.2SiO2 and 5BaO.8SiO2 glasses. For both glasses, the temperature for maximum nucleation rate and the temperature range for significant nucleation agree well with previous estimates from differential thermal analysis studies. The data are analyzed with a new iterative method to obtain the interfacial free energy and critical work of cluster formation as a function of temperature. For temperatures below the temperature at which steady-state nucleati…
The temperature dependence of the frequency dispersion in the sound velocity and damping of vitreous silica is reanalyzed. Thermally activated relaxation accounts for the sound attenuation observed above 10 K at sonic and ultrasonic frequencies. Its extrapolation to the hypersonic regime reveals that the anharmonic coupling to the thermal bath becomes important in Brillouin-scattering measurements. At 35 GHz and room temperature, the damping due to this anharmonicity is found to be nearly twice that produced by thermally activated relaxation. The analysis also reveals a sizeable velocity incre…
Transparent glasses in the system 0.5Li2O-0.5M2O-2B2O3 (M=Li, Na and K) were fabricated via the conventional melt quenching technique. Amorphous and glassy nature of the samples were confirmed via the X-ray powder diffraction and the differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. The frequency and temperature dependent characteristics of the dielectric relaxation and the electrical conductivity were investigated in the 100 Hz - 10 MHz frequency range. The imaginary part of the electric modulus spectra was modeled using an approximate solution of Kohrausch-Williams-Watts relation. The stretch…
Transparent SrO-0.5Li2O-4.5B2O3 (SLBO) and BaO-0.5Na2O-4.5B2O3 (BNBO) glasses were fabricated via the conventional melt-quenching technique. The amorphous and glassy characteristics of the as-quenched samples were respectively confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) studies. Optically clear SLBO and BNBO glass nano/microcrystal composites were obtained by heat-treating the as-quenched glasses slightly above their respective glass transition temperatures. These glass nano/microcrystal composites exhibited second harmonic signals in transmission mode w…
Orientational glasses with CO molecules occupying 26% and 90% of the octahedral interstitial sites in the C60 lattice have been investigated by the dilatometric method in a temperature interval of 2.5 - 23 K. At temperatures 4 - 6 K the glasses undergo a first-order phase transition which is evident from the hysteresis of the thermal expansion and the maxima in the temperature dependences of the linear thermal expansion coefficients, and the thermalization times of the samples. The effect of the noncentral CO-C60 interaction upon the thermal expansion and the phase transition in these glasses …
Many properties of alloyed chalcogenide glasses can be closely correlated with the average coordination of these compounds. This is the case, for example, of the ultrasonic constants, dilatometric softening temperature and the vibrational densities of states. What is striking, however, is that these properties are nevertheless almost independent of the composition at given average coordination. Here, we report on some numerical verification of this experimental rule as applied to vibrational density of states.
The ratio of the mean square amplitude root of thermal vibrations and the interatomic distance is a universal constant dls at the melting temperature Tm. The classical Gibbs free energy change completed by a volume energy saving els (or Delg)*DHm that governs the liquid to solid and liquid to ultra-stable glass transformations leads to a universal constant equal to els (or Delg), DHm being the crystal melting enthalpy. The minimum values 0.217 of els and 0.103 of dls are used to predict ultra-stable glass formation in pure metallic liquid elements at a universal reduced temperature 0g = (Tg-Tm…
We synthesize and study the properties of praseodymium doped fluoroindate glasses. Glass compositions with praseodymium molar concentrations up to 5% were obtained with good optical quality. Thermal, optical, and luminescence properties are investigated. Judd-Ofelt analysis is used to determine radiative lifetime and emission cross-section of the orange transition originating from the 3P0 level. We find that these glasses are good candidates for the realization of blue diode laser pumped orange lasers for quantum information processing applications.
We rejuvenate well-aged quasi-2D binary colloidal glasses by thermal cycling, and systematically measure both the statistical responses and particle-level structural evolutions during rejuvenation. While the moduli and boson peak are continuously rejuvenated with increasing number of cycles, the mean square displacement (MSD) fluctuates significantly between different groups of thermal cycles. The decoupling between the thermodynamical and dynamical evolutions suggests different microscopic origins for different bulk properties of glasses. We find that a small fraction of structural rearrangem…
Within the shoving model of the glass transition, the relaxation time and the viscosity are related to the local cage rigidity. This approach can be extended down to the atomic-level in terms of the interatomic interaction, or potential of mean-force. We applied this approach to both real metallic glass-formers and model Lennard-Jones glasses. The main outcome of this analysis is that in metallic glasses the thermal expansion contribution is mostly independent of composition and is uncorrelated with the interatomic repulsion: as a consequence, the fragility increases upon increasing the intera…
The influence of strain amplitude, glass stability and thermal fluctuations on shear band formation and yielding transition is studied using molecular dynamics simulations. The model binary mixture is first gradually cooled below the glass transition temperature and then periodically deformed to access a broad range of potential energy states. We find that the critical strain amplitude becomes larger for highly annealed glasses within about one thousand shear cycles. Moreover, upon continued loading at a fixed strain amplitude, the yielding transition is delayed in glasses mechanically anneale…
A thermal activation model to describe the plasticity of bulk metallic glasses (Derlet and Maaß, Phil. Mag. 2013, DOI: 10.1080/14786435.2013.826396) which uses a distribution of barrier energies and some aspects of under-cooled liquid physics is developed further. In particular, a log-normal distribution is now employed to describe the statistics of barrier energies. A high temperature mean-field description of homogeneous macro-plasticity is then developed and is shown to be similar to a thermal activation picture employing a single characteristic activation energy and activation volume. In m…
The thermal conductivity of some orientational glasses of protonated C2H5OH and deuterated C2D5OD ethanol, cyclic substances (cyclohexanol C6H11OH, cyanocyclohexane C6H11CN, cyclohexene C6H10), and freon 112 (CFCl2)2 have been analyzed in the temperature interval 2-130 K. The investigated substances demonstrate new effects concerned with the physics of disordered systems. Universal temperature dependences of the thermal conductivity of molecular orientational glasses have been revealed. At low temperatures, the thermal conductivity exhibits a universal behavior that can be described by the sof…
The temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity is linked to the nature of the energy transport at a frequency omega, which is quantified by thermal diffusivity d(omega). Here we study d(omega) for a poorly annealed glass and a highly stable glass prepared using the swap Monte Carlo algorithm. To calculate d(omega), we excite wave packets and find that the energy moves diffusively for high frequencies up to a maximum frequency, beyond which the energy stays localized. At intermediate frequencies, we find a linear increase of the square of the width of the wave packet with time, which al…
Spin-charge conversion via inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) is essential for enabling various applications of spintronics. The spin Hall response usually follows a universal scaling relation with longitudinal electric resistivity and has mild temperature dependence because elementary excitations play only a minor role in resistivity and hence ISHE. Here we report that the ISHE of metallic glasses shows nearly two orders of magnitude enhancements with temperature increase from a threshold of 80-100 K to glass transition points. As electric resistivity changes only marginally in the temperature r…

Studying the primary α- and secondary β-relaxation process has contributed significantly to the understanding of the structure and rheology of metallic glasses. In this letter, we report on a third relaxation mechanism indicated by a maximum in the loss modulus at low temperatures, which we term γ-relaxation. Contrary to the α- and β-relaxation mechanisms, this irreversible, low energy excitation causes a macroscopic rejuvenation, which we assign to non-affine atomic rearrangements in the matrix that are driven by thermal stresses during cooling. Observed in three different glassy alloys, the …
The temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity of amorphous solids is markedly different from that of their crystalline counterparts, but exhibits universal behaviour. Sound attenuation is believed to be related to this universal behaviour. Recent computer simulations demonstrated that in the harmonic approximation sound attenuation $Γ$ obeys quartic, Rayleigh scattering scaling for small wavevectors $k$ and quadratic scaling for wavevectors above the Ioffe-Regel limit. However, simulations and experiments do not provide a clear picture of what to expect at finite temperatures where an…
The linear thermal expansion coefficients a(T) of N2 - C60 solutions with 9.9% and 100% of the C60 lattice interstitials filled with N2 have been investigated in the interval 2.2 - 24 K. The dependence a(T) has a hysteresis suggesting co-existence of two types of orientational glasses in these solutions. The features of the glasses are compared. The characteristic times of phase transformations in the solutions and reorientation of C60 molecules have been estimated.
The low-temperature thermal properties of glasses are anomalous with respect to those of crystals. These thermal anomalies indicate that the low-frequency vibrational properties of glasses differ from those of crystals. Recent studies revealed that, in the simplest model of glasses, i.e., the harmonic potential system, phonon modes coexist with soft localized modes in the low-frequency (continuum) limit. However, the nature of low-frequency vibrational modes of more realistic models is still controversial. In the present work, we study the Lennard-Jones (LJ) system using large-scale molecular-…
Preparation technology, the structure determination, multiband luminescence and nonlinear optical properties of the chalcogenide glasses are subject of present work. The glass samples with two different Er content were prepared by classical two-stage melt-quenching method. Glass state and morphology were confirmed by X-ray and EDS techniques. Influence of the Erbium doping on the luminescence and NLO properties was investigated.
The spin glasses show intriguing characteristic features that are not well understood yet, as for instance its aging, rejuvenation and memory effects. Here a model based on a stretched exponential decay of its magnetization is proposed, which can describe the main magnetic features of spin glasses observed in experiments as the time-decay of thermoremament magnetization, the relaxation of zero field cooled magnetization, the ac and dc magnetization as a function of temperature and others. In principle, the here proposed model could be adapted to describe other glassy systems.
We compare the ability of various interaction potentials to predict the structural and mechanical properties of silica and sodium silicate glasses. While most structural quantities show a relatively mild dependence on the potential used, the mechanical properties such as the failure stress and strain as well as the elastic moduli depend very strongly on the potential, once finite size effects have been taken into account. We find that to avoid such finite size effects, samples of at least 75,000 atoms are needed. Finally we probe how the simulation ensemble influences the fracture properties o…
We use large-scale simulations to investigate the dynamic fracture of silica and sodium-silicate glasses under uniaxial tension. The stress-strain curves demonstrate that silica glass is brittle whereas the glasses rich in Na show pronounced ductility. A strong composition dependence is also seen in the crack velocity which is on the order of 1800 m/s for glasses with low Na concentration and decreases to 700 m/s if the concentration is high. We find that during the fracture of Na-rich glasses very irregular cavities as large as 3-4 nm form ahead of the crack front, indicating the presence of …
Polycrystalline LiMnBO3 is a promising cathode material for Li-ion batteries. In this work, we investigated the thermal, structural and electrical properties of glassy and nanocrystallized materials having the same chemical composition. The original glass was obtained via a standard meltquenching method. SEM and 7Li solid-state NMR indicate that it contains a mixture of two distinct glassy phases. The results suggest that the electrical conductivity of the glass is dominated by the ionic one. The dc conductivity of initial glass was estimated to be in the order of 10-18 S.cm-1 at room temperat…
