Transparent glasses in the system 0.5Li2O-0.5M2O-2B2O3 (M=Li, Na and K) were fabricated via the conventional melt quenching technique. Amorphous and glassy nature of the samples were confirmed via the X-ray powder diffraction and the differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. The frequency and temperature dependent characteristics of the dielectric relaxation and the electrical conductivity were investigated in the 100 Hz - 10 MHz frequency range. The imaginary part of the electric modulus spectra was modeled using an approximate solution of Kohrausch-Williams-Watts relation. The stretching exponent, β, was found to be temperature independent for 0.5Li2O-0.5Na2O-2B2O3 (LNBO) glasses. The activation energy associated with DC conductivity was found to be higher (1.25eV) for 0.5Li2O-0.5K2O-2B2O3 (LKBO) glasses than that of the other glass systems under study. This could be attributed to the mixed cationic effect.
The frequency and temperature dependence of the dielectric constant and the electrical conductivity of the transparent glasses in the composition 0.5Cs2O-0.5Li2O-3B2O3 (CLBO) were investigated in the 100 Hz - 10 MHz frequency range. The dielectric constant for the as-quenched glass increased with increasing temperature, exhibiting anomalies in the vicinity of the glass transition and crystallization temperatures. The temperature coefficient of dielectric constant was estimated (35 \pm 2 ppm.K-1) using Havinga's formula. The dielectric loss at 313 K is 0.005 \pm 0.0005 at all the frequencies un…
Inorganic glasses, produced by the melt-quenching of a concoction of minerals, compounds, and elements, can possess unique optical and elastic properties along with excellent chemical, and thermal durability. Despite the ubiquitous use of glasses for critical applications such as touchscreen panels, windshields, bioactive implants, optical fibers and sensors, kitchen and laboratory glassware, thermal insulators, nuclear waste immobilization, optical lenses, and solid electrolytes, their composition-structure-property relationships remain poorly understood. Here, exploiting largescale experimen…
The frequency and temperature dependence of the dielectric constant and the electrical conductivity of the transparent glasses in the composition Li2O-3B2O3 (LBO) were investigated in the 100 Hz- 10 MHz frequency range. The dielectric constant and the loss in the low frequency regime were electrode material dependent. Dielectric and electrical relaxations were respectively analyzed using the Cole-Cole and electric modulus formalisms. The dielectric relaxation mechanism was discussed in the framework of electrode and charge carrier (hopping of the ions) related polarization using generalized Co…

The dielectric data have been analyzed using Cole-Cole equation with an addition of the conductivity term. The electrical conductivity was found to be obeying Jonscher's universal law. The dielectric constant and the loss for the as-quenched glasses increased with increasing temperature, exhibiting anomalies in the vicinity of the glass transition and…
We introduce a novel approach to model heat transport in solids, based on the Green-Kubo theory of linear response. It naturally bridges the Boltzmann kinetic approach in crystals and the Allen-Feldman model in glasses, leveraging interatomic force constants and normal-mode linewidths computed at mechanical equilibrium. At variance with molecular dynamics, our approach naturally and easily accounts for quantum mechanical effects in energy transport. Our methodology is carefully validated against results for crystalline and amorphous silicon from equilibrium molecular dynamics and, in the forme…
The use of oxide glasses is pervasive throughout everyday amenities and commodities. Such glasses are typically electrical insulators, and endowing them with electrical conductivity without changing their salutary mechanical properties, weight, or thermoformability enables new applications in multifunctional utensils, smart windows, and automotive parts. Previous strategies to impart electrical conductivity include modifying the glass composition or forming a solid-in-solid composite of the glass and a conductive phase. Here we demonstrate using the latter strategy the highest reported room-te…
Electrical modulus analysis of the frequency dependent conductivity data over the range from 100 Hz to 10 MHz and at temperature range of 140 oC to 300 oC were carried out on the mixed alkali vanadate glass samples having lithium and rubidium as alkali elements. The analysis of the data is done using Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts (KWW) equation which describes the relaxation behavior of the mobile species. We have used the Bergman equation (R. Bergman, J. Apl. Phys. 88 (2000) 1356.) for fitting the imaginary part of the electrical modulus. The stretching parameter beta derived from this fit shows …
Vapour-deposited organic glasses are currently in use in many optoelectronic devices. Their operation temperature is limited by the glass transition temperature of the organic layers and thermal management strategies become increasingly important to improve the lifetime of the device. Here we report the unusual finding that molecular orientation heavily influences heat flow propagation in glassy films of small molecule organic semiconductors. The thermal conductivity of vapour-deposited thin-film semiconductor glasses is anisotropic and controlled by the deposition temperature. We compare our …
In this communication we report the fluorine ion dynamics in mixed alkali oxyfluro vanadate glasses. We have measured the electrical conductivity using impedance spectroscopy technique Room temperature conductivity falls to 5 orders of magnitude from its single alkali values at 33 mol% of rubidium concentration. We have also estimated the distance between similar mobile ions using the density values. Assuming this distance as the hopping distance between the similar ions we have estimated the anionic (Fluorine ion in our case) conductivity. It is observed that the fluorine ion dynamics mimics …
A new theoretical approach is presented for relating structural information to transport properties in ion conducting network glasses. It relies on the consideration of the different types of glass forming units and the charges associated with them. Changes in the compositions of these units lead to a re-distribution of Coulomb traps for the mobile ions and to a subsequent change in long-range ionic mobilities. It is furthermore shown how measured changes of the unit compositions can be explained by thermodynamic modeling. The theories are tested against experiments on borophosphate glasses an…
Electrical conduction and relaxation phenomena in bismuth borate glasses in the composition 2Bi2O3-B2O3 (Bi4B2O9) were investigated. Dielectric studies carried out on these glasses revealed near constant loss (NCL) response in the 1 kHz to 1MHz frequency range at moderately high temperatures (300-450K) associated with relatively low loss (D=0.006) and high dielectric constant (εr'=37) at 1kHz,300K. The variation in AC conductivity with temperature at different frequencies showed a cross over from NCL response characterized by local ion vibration within the potential well to universal Joncher's…
An appropriate model for the random energy landscape in organic glasses is a spatially correlated Gaussian field, generated by randomly located and oriented dipoles and quadrupoles. Correlation properties of energetic disorder directly dictates the mobility dependence on the applied electric field. Electrostatic disorder is significantly modified in the vicinity of the electrode that affects injection properties. Correlated Gaussian field forms clusters. We suggest a simple method to estimate an asymptotics of the cluster distribution on size for deep clusters where a value of the field on eac…
Crystals and glasses exhibit fundamentally different heat conduction mechanisms: the periodicity of crystals allows for the excitation of propagating vibrational waves that carry heat, as first discussed by Peierls; in glasses, the lack of periodicity breaks Peierls' picture and heat is mainly carried by the coupling of vibrational modes, often described by a harmonic theory introduced by Allen and Feldman. Anharmonicity or disorder are thus the limiting factors for thermal conductivity in crystals or glasses; hitherto, no transport equation has been able to account for both. Here, we derive s…
We explore progress in understanding the behaviour of cation conducting glasses, within the context of an evolving ''dynamic structure model'' (DSM). This behaviour includes: in single cation glasses a strong dependence of ion mobility on concentration, and in mixed cation glasses a range of anomalies known collectively as the mixed alkali effect. We argue that this rich phenomenology arises from the emergence during cooling of a well-defined structure in glass melts resulting from the interplay of chemical interactions and thermally driven ionic motions. The new DSM proposes the existence of …
X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) along with differential thermal analysis (DTA) carried out on the as-quenched samples in the 3BaO-3TiO2-B2O3 system confirmed their amorphous and glassy nature, respectively. The dielectric constants in the 1 kHz-1 MHz frequency range were measured as a function of temperature (323-748 K). The dielectric constant and loss were found to be frequency independent in the 323-473 K temperature range. The dielectric behavior was consistent with the universal dielectric response (UDR). The temperature coefficient of dielectric constant was estimated using Havinga's form…
The glasses in the system (100-x)TeO2-xCaCu3Ti4O12, (x=0.25 to 3 mol %) were fabricated. The color varied from olive green to brown as the CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) content increased in TeO2 matrix. The X-ray powder diffraction and differential scanning calorimetric analyses that were carried out on the as-quenched samples confirmed their amorphous and glassy nature respectively. The dielectric constant and loss in the 100 Hz-1MHz frequency range were monitored as a function of temperature (50-400oC). The dielectric constant and the loss (D) increased as the CCTO content increased in TeO2 at all the …
Polycrystalline LiMnBO3 is a promising cathode material for Li-ion batteries. In this work, we investigated the thermal, structural and electrical properties of glassy and nanocrystallized materials having the same chemical composition. The original glass was obtained via a standard meltquenching method. SEM and 7Li solid-state NMR indicate that it contains a mixture of two distinct glassy phases. The results suggest that the electrical conductivity of the glass is dominated by the ionic one. The dc conductivity of initial glass was estimated to be in the order of 10-18 S.cm-1 at room temperat…
Predicting the thermal conductivity of glasses from first principles has hitherto been a prohibitively complex problem. In fact, past works have highlighted challenges in achieving computational convergence with respect to length and/or time scales using either the established Allen-Feldman or Green-Kubo formulations, endorsing the concept that atomistic models containing thousands of atoms -- thus beyond the capabilities of first-principles calculations -- are needed to describe the thermal conductivity of glasses. In addition, these established formulations either neglect anharmonicity (Alle…
Individual cationic site--energies are explicitly determined from molecular dynamics simulations of alkali silicate glasses, and the properties and relevance of this local energetics to ion transport are studied. The absence of relaxations on the timescale of ion transport proves the validity of a static description of the energy landscape, as it is generally used in hopping models. The Coulomb interaction among the cations turns out essential to obtain an average energy landscape in agreement with typical simplified hopping models. Strong correlations exist both between neighboring sites and …
The mobility of graphene transferred on a SiO2/Si substrate is limited to ~10,000 cm2/Vs. Without understanding the graphene/SiO2 interaction, it is difficult to improve the electrical transport properties. Although surface structures on SiO2 such as silanol and siloxane groups are recognized, the relation between the surface treatment of SiO2 and graphene characteristics has not yet been elucidated. This paper discusses the electrical transport properties of graphene on specific surface structures of SiO2 prepared by O2-plasma treatments and reoxidization.
We present electrical transport measurements of heterostructures comprised of BaTiO$_3$ and Ba$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$TiO$_3$ epitaxially grown on Ge. The Sr-alloying imparts compressive strain to the BaTiO$_3$, which enables the thermal expansion mismatch between BaTiO$_3$ and Ge to be overcome to achieve $c$-axis oriented growth. The conduction bands of BaTiO$_3$ and Ba$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$TiO$_3$ are nearly aligned with the conduction band of Ge, which facilitates electron transport. Electrical transport measurements through the dielectric stack exhibit rectifying behavior and hysteresis, where the latter i…
It is generally observed that electrical transport properties of simple liquid metal based alloys can be explained well in terms of Faber-Ziman theory, 2kF scattering model and finite mean free path approach. However, these approaches give poor description for materials, which show departure from nearly free electron (NFE) model. Taking Pb-Li as a test case of a system showing departure from NFE (which also exhibit compound formation tendency and disparate mass system), a new technique is proposed to compute electrical transport properties using model potential formalism coupled with t-matrix …
The temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity is linked to the nature of the energy transport at a frequency omega, which is quantified by thermal diffusivity d(omega). Here we study d(omega) for a poorly annealed glass and a highly stable glass prepared using the swap Monte Carlo algorithm. To calculate d(omega), we excite wave packets and find that the energy moves diffusively for high frequencies up to a maximum frequency, beyond which the energy stays localized. At intermediate frequencies, we find a linear increase of the square of the width of the wave packet with time, which al…
Electrical conductivity of dry, slow cooled (AgPO$_3$)$_{1-x}$(AgI)$_x$ glasses is examined as a function of temperature, frequency and glass composition. From these data compositional trends in activation energy for conductivity E$_A$(x), Coulomb energy E$_c$(x) for Ag$^+$ ion creation, Kohlrausch stretched exponent $β$(x), low frequency ($\varepsilon_s$(x)) and high-frequency ($\varepsilon_\infty$(x)) permittivity are deduced. All parameters except E$_c$(x) display two compositional thresholds, one near the stress transition, x = x$_c$(1)= 9%, and the other near the rigidity transition, x = …
Ferroelectric field-effect transistors (FE-FETs) consisting of tunable dielectric layers are utilized to investigate interfacial transport processes. Large changes in the dielectric constant as a function of temperature are observed in FE-FETs in conjunction with the ferroelectric to paraelectric transition. The devices offer a test bed to evaluate specific effects of polarization on the electrical processes. FE-FETs have dominant contributions from polarization-fluctuation rather than static dipolar disorder prevalent in high k paraelectric dielectric-based FETs. Additionally, photo-excitatio…
We report the first investigation of the electrical and magnetic properties of the triangular-lattice compound Zr$_2$NiP$_2$ (space group $P$6$_3$/$mmc$). The temperature evolution of electrical resistivity follows the Bloch-Grüneisen-Mott law, and exhibits a typically metallic behavior. No transition is visible by both electrical and magnetic property measurements, and nearly no magnetization is detected ($M_0$ $<$ 0.002$μ_\mathrm{B}$/Ni) down to 1.8 K up to 7 T. The metallic and nonmagnetic characters are well understood by the first-principles calculations for Zr$_2$NiP$_2$.
Colloidal nanoparticles developed as interesting objects to establish two- or three-dimensional super-structures with properties not known from conventional bulk materials. Beyond, the properties can be tuned and quantum effects can be exploited. This allows understanding electronic and optoelectronic transport phenomena and developing corresponding devices. The state-of-the-art in this field will be reviewed and possible challenges and prospects will be identified.
We have carried out time--domain electrostatic force spectroscopy on two different ion conducting glasses using an atomic force microscope. We compare the electrostatic force spectroscopic data obtained at different temperatures with macroscopic electrical data of the glasses. The overall consistency of the data shows that electrostatic force spectroscopy is capable of probing the ion dynamics and transport in nanoscopic subvolumes of the samples.
The Hall scattering factor is formulated using Rode's iterative approach to solving the Boltzmann transport equation in such a way that it may be easily computed within the scope of ab-inito calculations. Using this method in conjunction with density functional theory based calculations, we demonstrate that the Hall scattering factor in electron-doped Ti2CO2 varies greatly with temperature and concentration, ranging from 0.2 to around 1.3 for weak magnetic fields. The electrical transport was modelled primarily using three scattering mechanisms: piezoelectric scattering, acoustic scattering, a…
We study the differences in electrical charge transport dynamics of the conductivity enhancement of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) derivatives under geometrical confinement. The results of polymer blend poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) and a polymer-monomer blend, poly(3,4- ethylenedioxythiophene):tosylate, highlight the role of dopants and processing conditions of these systems under confinement. The prevailing transport length scales in confined geometry of characteristic dimensions originate from varying disorder in these polymer systems. These observable d…
Thin films prepared of semiconductor nanoparticles are promising for low-cost electronic applications such as transistors and solar cells. One hurdle for their breakthrough is their notoriously low conductivity. To address this, we precisely decorate CdSe nanoparticles with platinum domains of one to three nanometers in diameter by a facile and robust seeded growth method. We demonstrate the transition from semiconductor to metal dominated conduction in monolayered films. By adjusting the platinum content in such solution-processable hybrid, oligomeric nanoparticles the dark currents through d…
We report the systematic study of structural, magnetic and electrical transport properties of $Y_{2-x}Bi_xIr_2O_7$ (x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) pyrochlore iridates. The chemical doping enhances electrical conductivity and antiferromagnetic correlation substantially. The replacement of non-magnetic $Y^{3+}$ ion with non-magnetic $Bi^{3+}$ in $Y_2Ir_2O_7$ tends to reduce the octahedral distortion thus enhancing the antiferromagnetic correlation. Raman spectroscopy shows that the $Ir-O$ bond contract slightly and the $R-O'$ bond turn longer as disorder and phononic oscillation are reduced with $Bi$ d…
Electrical and thermal transport properties of disordered materials have long been of both theoretical interest and engineering importance. As a new class of materials with an intrinsic compositional disorder, high/medium-entropy alloys (HEAs/MEAs) are being immensely studied mainly for their excellent mechanical properties. By contrast, electrical and thermal transport properties of HEAs/MEAs are less well studied. Here we investigate these two properties of silicon (Si)-germanium (Ge)-tin (Sn) MEAs, where we keep the same content of Si and Ge while increasing the content of Sn from 0 to 1/3 …
The structure-property relation of nanostructured Al-doped ZnO thin films has been investigated in detail through a systematic variation of structure and morphology, with particular emphasis on how they affect optical and electrical properties. A variety of structures, ranging from compact polycristalline films to mesoporous, hierarchically organized cluster assemblies, are grown by Pulsed Laser Deposition at room temperature at different oxygen pressures. We investigate the dependence of functional properties on structure and morphology and show how the correlation between electrical and opti…
Neodymium doped Na2O-ZnO-TeO2 (NZT) glasses were prepared by the conventional melt quenching technique. DTA and TG were used to confirmation of glass preparation through the glass transition temperature at 447°C for the glass system. The analysis of FTIR spectra and X-ray diffraction described the nature of the samples were ionic and amorphous respectively. The optical bandgap energy was estimated using absorption spectra and found to be decreased from 2.63eV to 1.32 eV due to the increase of doping concentration. The intensity of the emission spectra was enhanced for the higher concentration …
We report the results of electrical resistivity measurements carried out on well-sintered La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 / Mn3O4 composite samples with almost constant composition of the magnetoresistive manganite phase (La0.7Ca0.3MnO3). A percolation threshold (fc) occurs when the La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 volume fraction is ~ 0.19. The dependence of the electrical resistivity as a function of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 volume fraction (fLCMO) can be described by percolation-like phenomenological equations. Fitting the conducting regime (fLCMO > fc) by the percolation power law returns a critical exponent t value of 2.0 +/- 0.2 at…
Using silicon MOSFETs with thin (5nm) thermally grown SiO2 gate dielectrics, we characterize the density of electrically active traps at low-temperature after 16keV phosphorus ion-implantation through the oxide. We find that, after rapid thermal annealing at 1000oC for 5 seconds, each implanted P ion contributes an additional 0.08 plus/minus 0.03 electrically active traps, whilst no increase in the number of traps is seen for comparable silicon implants. This result shows that the additional traps are ionized P donors, and not damage due to the implantation process. We also find, using the roo…
We report the transport properties of monolayer and bilayer graphene from first principles calculations and Boltzmann transport theory (BTE). Our resistivity studies on monolayer graphene show Bloch-Gr${\rm \ddot{u}}$neisen behavior in a certain range of chemical potentials. By substituting boron nitride in place of a carbon dimer of graphene, we predict a twofold increase in the Seebeck coefficient. A similar increase in the Seebeck coefficient for bilayer graphene under the influence of a small electric field $\sim 0.3$ eV has been observed in our calculations. Graphene with impurities shows…
In this paper we show that the widely accepted method of the determination of Curie temperature (TC) in (Ga,Mn)As samples, based on the position of the peak in the temperature derivative of the resistivity, completely fails in the case of non-metallic and low-TC unannealed samples. In this case we propose an alternative method, also based on electric transport measurements, which exploits temperature dependence of the second derivative of the resistivity upon magnetic field.
We have investigated the nonreciprocal electrical transport, that is a nonlinear resistance effect depending on the current direction, in multiferroic Rashba semiconductor (Ge,Mn)Te. Due to coexistence of ferromagnetic and ferroelectric orders, (Ge,Mn)Te provides a unique platform for exploring the nonreciprocal electrical transport in a bulk form. (Ge,Mn)Te thin films shows a large nonreciprocal resistance compared to GeTe, the nonmagnetic counterpart with the same crystal structure. The magnetic-field-angle dependence of the nonreciprocal resistance is maximized when magnetic field is orthog…
We have investigated the H2 pressure-dependent (from vacuum to 20 bar) current-voltage characteristics of ZnO thin films prepared by spin coating method. The gas pressure effect on conductance (G) was subtracted using He gas. The G increased as applying 2 bar of H2 pressure, and then it monotonously decreased with the further increment of H2 pressure. Using X-ray diffraction patterns and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy before and after H2 exposure, we found that the H2 spillover effect plays an important role in the variation of G of ZnO film.
This work presents theoretical calculations of the electrical transport properties of the Ag, Au, and La fractionally filled bulk skutterudites: CoSb3, CoAs3, and CoP3. Density functional theory (DFT), along with projector augmented wave (PAW) potentials, was used to calculate bulk band structures and partial density of states. The Seebeck coefficient (S), electrical conductivity (s), and power factor (S2 s) were calculated as a function of temperature and filling fraction using the momentum matrix method along the entire first Brillouin zone. Calculated trends in the electrical transport prop…
A major challenge in the modeling of ionically conducting glasses is to understand how the large variety of possible chemical compositions and specific structural properties influence ionic transport quantities. Here we revisit and extend a theoretical approach for alkali borophosphate glasses, where changes of conductivity activation energies with the borate to phosphate mixing ratio are related to modifications of the ionic site energy landscape. The landscape modifications are caused by varying amounts of different units forming the glassy network, which lead to spatial redistributions of t…
We have investigated anisotropy in magnetic and electrical transport properties of Fe1-xCrxSb2 (0<= x <=1) single crystals. The magnetic ground state of the system evolves from paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic with gradual substitution of Fe with Cr. Anisotropy in electrical transport diminishes with increased Cr substitution and fades away by x=0.5. We find that the variable range hopping (VRH) conduction mechanism dominates at low temperatures for 0.4<= x <=0.75.
We discuss methods for imaging the nonequilibrium spin polarization of electrons in Fe/GaAs spin transport devices. Both optically- and electrically-injected spin distributions are studied by scanning magneto-optical Kerr rotation microscopy. Related methods are used to demonstrate electrical spin detection of optically-injected spin polarized currents. Dynamical properties of spin transport are inferred from studies based on the Hanle effect, and the influence of strain on spin transport data in these devices is discussed.
The field-dependent ion transport in thin samples of different glasses is characterised by means of nonlinear conductivity spectroscopy. AC electric fields with strengths up to 77 kV/cm are applied to the samples, and the Fourier components of the current spectra are analysed. In the dc conductivity regime and in the transition region to the dispersive conductivity, higher harmonics in the current spectra are detected, which provide information about higher--order conductivity coefficients. Our method ensures that these higher--order conductivity coefficients are exclusively governed by field-…
We present the first in a series of microscopic studies of electrical transport through individual molecules with metallic contacts. We view the molecules as ``heterostructures'' composed of chemically well-defined atomic groups, and analyze the device characteristics in terms of the charge and potential response of these atomic-groups to the perturbation induced by the metal-molecule coupling and the applied electrical field, which are modeled using a first-principles based self-consistent matrix Green's function (SCMGF) method. As the first example, we examine the devices formed by attaching…
We have investigated electron transport in Nb doped SrTiO$_3$ single crystals for two doping densities. We find that the resistivity and mobility are temperature dependent in both whereas the carrier concentration is almost temperature invariant. We rationalize this using the hydrogenic theory for shallow donors. Further, we probe electrical transport across Schottky interfaces of Au on TiO$_2$ terminated n-type SrTiO$_3$. Quantitative analysis of macroscopic I-V measurements reveal thermionic emission dominated transport for the low doped substrate whereas it deviates from such behavior for t…
Electrical transport properties of RNiO3 (R= Pr, Nd, Sm) thin films grown by pulse laser deposition have been studied. RNiO3 films grow in (100) direction on LaAlO3 (100) substrate. Unlike in polycrystalline solid, PrNiO3 film showed metallic behavior. The first order metal to insulator transition observed in polycrystalline solids is suppressed in RNiO3 films. The effect of lattice strain in the films influensing the transport properties has been studied by varying the thickness of PrNiO3 film on LaAlO3 and also by growing them on SrTiO3 and sapphire substrates. Deviation in the transport pro…
In this work we have shown bulk superconductivity and studied the anisotropy in both the normal and superconducting states in quasi-1D conductor Nb2Se3. Electron - electron Umklapp scattering dominates electronic transport along the direction of Nb metal chains as well as perpendicular to it. The superconducting state is rather anisotropic with possible multi - band features.
