We study the effect of boundary conditions on the relaxation time of the Glauber dynamics for the hard-core model on the tree. The hard-core model is defined on the set of independent sets weighted by a parameter $λ$, called the activity. The Glauber dynamics is the Markov chain that updates a randomly chosen vertex in each step. On the infinite tree with branching factor $b$, the hard-core model can be equivalently defined as a broadcasting process with a parameter $ω$ which is the positive solution to $λ=ω(1+ω)^b$, and vertices are occupied with probability $ω/(1+ω)$ when their parent is unoccupied. This broadcasting process undergoes a phase transition between the so-called reconstruction and non-reconstruction regions at $ω_r\approx \ln{b}/b$. Reconstruction has been of considerable interest recently since it appears to be intimately connected to the efficiency of local algorithms on locally tree-like graphs, such as sparse random graphs. In this paper we show that the relaxation time of the Glauber dynamics on regular $b$-ary trees $T_h$ of height $h$ and $n$ vertices, undergoes a phase transition around the reconstruction threshold. In particular, we construct a boundary condition for which the relaxation time slows down at the reconstruction threshold. More precisely, for any $ω\le \ln{b}/b$, for $T_h$ with any boundary condition, the relaxation time is $Ω(n)$ and $O(n^{1+o_b(1)})$. In contrast, above the reconstruction threshold we show that for every $δ>0$, for $ω=(1+δ)\ln{b}/b$, the relaxation time on $T_h$ with any boundary condition is $O(n^{1+δ+ o_b(1)})$, and we construct a boundary condition where the relaxation time is $Ω(n^{1+δ/2 - o_b(1)})$.
Let $T$ be a tree on $n$ vertices and with maximum degree $Δ$. We show that for $k\geq Δ+1$ the Glauber dynamics for $k$-edge-colourings of $T$ mixes in polynomial time in $n$. The bound on the number of colours is best possible as the chain is not even ergodic for $k \leq Δ$. Our proof uses a recursive decomposition of the tree into subtrees; we bound the relaxation time of the original tree in terms of the relaxation time of its subtrees using block dynamics and chain comparison techniques. Of independent interest, we also introduce a monotonicity result for Glauber dynamics that simplifies …
We extend results of R. Holley beyond the integer lattice to a large class of groups which includes free groups. In particular we show that a shift-invariant measure is Gibbs if and only if it is Glauber-invariant. Moreover, any shift-invariant measure converges weakly to the set of Gibbs measures when evolved under Glauber dynamics. These results are proven using a new notion of free energy density relative to a sofic approximation by homomorphisms. Any measure which minimizes free energy density is Gibbs.
The mixing time of the Glauber dynamics for spin systems on trees is closely related to reconstruction problem. Martinelli, Sinclair and Weitz established this correspondence for a class of spin systems with soft constraints bounding the log-Sobolev constant by a comparison with the block dynamics. However, when there are hard constraints, the block dynamics may be reducible. We introduce a variant of the block dynamics extending these results to a wide class of spin systems with hard constraints. This applies for essentially any spin system that has non-reconstruction provided that on average…
We study continuous time Glauber dynamics for random configurations with local constraints (e.g. proper coloring, Ising and Potts models) on finite graphs with $n$ vertices and of bounded degree. We show that the relaxation time (defined as the reciprocal of the spectral gap $|λ_1-λ_2|$) for the dynamics on trees and on planar hyperbolic graphs, is polynomial in $n$. For these hyperbolic graphs, this yields a general polynomial sampling algorithm for random configurations. We then show that if the relaxation time $τ_2$ satisfies $τ_2=O(1)$, then the correlation coefficient, and the mutual info…
The Glauber dynamics on the colourings of a graph is a random process which consists in recolouring at each step a random vertex of a graph with a new colour chosen uniformly at random among the colours not already present in its neighbourhood. It is known that when the total number of colours available is at least $Δ+2$, where $Δ$ is the maximum degree of the graph, this process converges to a uniform distribution on the set of all the colourings. Moreover, a well known conjecture is that the time it takes for the convergence to happen, called the mixing time, is polynomial in the size of the…
Motivated by a recent use of Glauber dynamics for Monte-Carlo simulations of path integral representation of quantum spin models [Krzakala, Rosso, Semerjian, and Zamponi, Phys. Rev. B (2008)], we analyse a natural Glauber dynamics for the quantum Ising model with a transverse field on a finite graph $G$. We establish strict monotonicity properties of the equilibrium distribution and we extend (and improve) the censoring inequality of Peres and Winkler to the quantum setting. Then we consider the case when $G$ is a regular $b$-ary tree and prove the same fast mixing results established in [Mart…
We give the first comprehensive analysis of the effect of boundary conditions on the mixing time of the Glauber dynamics in the so-called Bethe approximation. Specifically, we show that spectral gap and the log-Sobolev constant of the Glauber dynamics for the Ising model on an n-vertex regular tree with plus-boundary are bounded below by a constant independent of n at all temperatures and all external fields. This implies that the mixing time is O(log n) (in contrast to the free boundary case, where it is not bounded by any fixed polynomial at low temperatures). In addition, our methods yield …
For general antiferromagnetic 2-spin systems, including the hardcore model and the antiferromagnetic Ising model, there is an $\mathsf{FPTAS}$ for the partition function on graphs of maximum degree $Δ$ when the infinite regular tree lies in the uniqueness region by Li et al. (2013). Moreover, in the tree non-uniqueness region, Sly (2010) showed that there is no $\mathsf{FPRAS}$ to estimate the partition function unless $\mathsf{NP}=\mathsf{RP}$. The algorithmic results follow from the correlation decay approach due to Weitz (2006) or the polynomial interpolation approach developed by Barvinok …
We establish rapid mixing of the random-cluster Glauber dynamics on random $Δ$-regular graphs for all $q\ge 1$ and $p<p_u(q,Δ)$, where the threshold $p_u(q,Δ)$ corresponds to a uniqueness/non-uniqueness phase transition for the random-cluster model on the (infinite) $Δ$-regular tree. It is expected that this threshold is sharp, and for $q>2$ the Glauber dynamics on random $Δ$-regular graphs undergoes an exponential slowdown at $p_u(q,Δ)$. More precisely, we show that for every $q\ge 1$, $Δ\ge 3$, and $p<p_u(q,Δ)$, with probability $1-o(1)$ over the choice of a random $Δ$-regular graph on $n$ v…
We prove that the mixing time of the Glauber dynamics for random k-colorings of the complete tree with branching factor b undergoes a phase transition at $k=b(1+o_b(1))/\ln{b}$. Our main result shows nearly sharp bounds on the mixing time of the dynamics on the complete tree with n vertices for $k=Cb/\ln{b}$ colors with constant C. For $C\geq1$ we prove the mixing time is $O(n^{1+o_b(1)}\ln{n})$. On the other side, for $C<1$ the mixing time experiences a slowing down; in particular, we prove it is $O(n^{1/C+o_b(1)}\ln{n})$ and $Ω(n^{1/C-o_b(1)})$. The critical point C=1 is interesting since it…
We study the hard-core model defined on independent sets of an input graph where the independent sets are weighted by a parameter $λ>0$. For constant $Δ$, previous work of Weitz (2006) established an FPTAS for the partition function for graphs of maximum degree $Δ$ when $λ< λ_c(Δ)$. The threshold $λ_c(Δ)$ is the critical point for the phase transition for uniqueness/non-uniqueness on the infinite $Δ$-regular trees. Sly (2010) showed that there is no FPRAS, unless NP=RP, when $λ>λ_c(Δ)$. The running time of Weitz's algorithm is exponential in $\log(Δ)$. Here we present an FPRAS for the partitio…
In zero-temperature Glauber dynamics, vertices of a graph are given i.i.d.~initial spins $σ_x(0)$ from $\{-1,+1\}$ with $\mathbb{P}_p(σ_x(0) = +1)=p$, and they update their spins at the arrival times of i.i.d. Poisson processes to agree with a majority of their neighbors. We study this process on the 3-regular tree $\mathbb{T}_3$, where it is known that the critical threshold $p_c$, below which $\mathbb{P}_p$-a.s. all spins fixate to $-1$, is strictly less than $1/2$. Defining $θ(p)$ to be the $\mathbb{P}_p$-probability that a vertex fixates to $+1$, we show that $θ$ is a continuous function o…
We prove an optimal mixing time bound on the single-site update Markov chain known as the Glauber dynamics or Gibbs sampling in a variety of settings. Our work presents an improved version of the spectral independence approach of Anari et al. (2020) and shows $O(n\log{n})$ mixing time on any $n$-vertex graph of bounded degree when the maximum eigenvalue of an associated influence matrix is bounded. As an application of our results, for the hard-core model on independent sets weighted by a fugacity $λ$, we establish $O(n\log{n})$ mixing time for the Glauber dynamics on any $n$-vertex graph of c…
Consider random $d$-regular graphs, i.e., random graphs such that there are exactly $d$ edges from each vertex for some $d\ge 3$. We study both the configuration model version of this graph, which has occasional multi-edges and self-loops, as well as the simple version of it, which is a $d$-regular graph chosen uniformly at random from the collection of all $d$-regular graphs. In this paper, we discuss mixing times of Glauber dynamics for the Ising model with an external magnetic field on a random $d$-regular graph, both in the quenched as well as the annealed settings. Let $β$ be the inverse …

We give a systematic development of the application of matrix norms to rapid mixing in spin systems. We show that rapid mixing of both random update Glauber dynamics and systematic scan Glauber dynamics occurs if any matrix norm of the associated dependency matrix is less than 1. We give improved analysis for the case in which the diagonal of the dependency matrix is $\mathbf{0}$ (as in heat bath dynamics). We apply the matrix norm methods to random update and systematic scan Glauber dynamics for coloring various classes of graphs. We give a general method for estimating a norm of a symmetric …
We prove an optimal $Ω(n^{-1})$ lower bound on the spectral gap of Glauber dynamics for anti-ferromagnetic two-spin systems with $n$ vertices in the tree uniqueness regime. This spectral gap holds for all, including unbounded, maximum degree $Δ$. Consequently, we have the following mixing time bounds for the models satisfying the uniqueness condition with a slack $δ\in(0,1)$: $\bullet$ $C(δ) n^2\log n$ mixing time for the hardcore model with fugacity $λ\le (1-δ)λ_c(Δ)= (1-δ)\frac{(Δ- 1)^{Δ- 1}}{(Δ- 2)^Δ}$; $\bullet$ $C(δ) n^2$ mixing time for the Ising model with edge activity $β\in\left[\frac…
We consider the problem of sampling from the ferromagnetic Potts and random-cluster models on a general family of random graphs via the Glauber dynamics for the random-cluster model. The random-cluster model is parametrized by an edge probability $p \in (0,1)$ and a cluster weight $q > 0$. We establish that for every $q\ge 1$, the random-cluster Glauber dynamics mixes in optimal $Θ(n\log n)$ steps on $n$-vertex random graphs having a prescribed degree sequence with bounded average branching $γ$ throughout the full high-temperature uniqueness regime $p<p_u(q,γ)$. The family of random graph mode…
We study the performance of Markov chains for the $q$-state ferromagnetic Potts model on random regular graphs. It is conjectured that their performance is dictated by metastability phenomena, i.e., the presence of "phases" (clusters) in the sample space where Markov chains with local update rules, such as the Glauber dynamics, are bound to take exponential time to escape. The phases that are believed to drive these metastability phenomena in the case of the Potts model emerge as local, rather than global, maxima of the so-called Bethe functional, and previous approaches of analysing these pha…
We present novel results for fast mixing of Glauber dynamics using the newly introduced and powerful Spectral Independence method from [Anari, Liu, Oveis-Gharan: FOCS 2020]. In our results, the parameters of the Gibbs distribution are expressed in terms of the spectral radius of the adjacency matrix of $G$, or that of the Hashimoto non-backtracking matrix. The analysis relies on new techniques that we introduce to bound the maximum eigenvalue of the pairwise influence matrix $\mathcal{I}^{Λ,τ}_{G}$ for the two spin Gibbs distribution $μ$. There is a common framework that underlies these techni…
We study various classes of random processes defined on the regular tree $T_d$ that are invariant under the automorphism group of $T_d$. Most important ones are factor of i.i.d. processes (randomized local algorithms), branching Markov chains and a new class that we call typical processes. Using Glauber dynamics on processes we give a sufficient condition for a branching Markov chain to be factor of i.i.d. Typical processes are defined in a way that they create a correspondence principle between random $d$-reguar graphs and ergodic theory on $T_d$. Using this correspondence principle together …
We consider Glauber dynamics (starting from an extremal configuration) in a monotone spin system, and show that interjecting extra updates cannot increase the expected Hamming distance or the total variation distance to the stationary distribution. We deduce that for monotone Markov random fields, when block dynamics contracts a Hamming metric, single-site dynamics mixes in O(n log n) steps on an n-vertex graph. In particular, our result completes work of Kenyon, Mossel and Peres concerning Glauber dynamics for the Ising model on trees. Our approach also shows that on bipartite graphs, alterna…
We present a new lower bound on the spectral gap of the Glauber dynamics for the Gibbs distribution of a spectrally independent $q$-spin system on a graph $G = (V,E)$ with maximum degree $Δ$. Notably, for several interesting examples, our bound covers the entire regime of $Δ$ excluded by arguments based on coupling with the stationary distribution. As concrete applications, by combining our new lower bound with known spectral independence computations and known coupling arguments: (1) We show that for a triangle-free graph $G = (V,E)$ with maximum degree $Δ\geq 3$, the Glauber dynamics for the…
In Bernoulli bond percolation on the Cartesian product graph of a $d$-regular tree and a line, we give an upper bound for the critical probability $p_c$.
In the context of percolation in a regular tree, we study the size of the largest cluster and the length of the longest run starting within the first d generations. As d tends to infinity, we prove almost sure and weak convergence results.
We consider Bernoulli bond percolation on the product graph of a regular tree and a line. We show that the triangle condition does not hold at the uniqueness threshold.
We consider a recurrent random walk in random environment on a regular tree. Under suitable general assumptions upon the distribution of the environment, we show that the walk exhibits an unusual slow movement: the order of magnitude of the walk in the first $n$ steps is $(\log n)^3$.
Consider a vertex-reinforced jump process defined on a regular tree, where each vertex has exactly $b$ children, with $b \ge 3$. We prove the strong law of large numbers and the central limit theorem for the distance of the process from the root. Notice that it is still unknown if vertex-reinforced jump process is transient on the binary tree.
A Markov tree is a random vector indexed by the nodes of a tree whose distribution is determined by the distributions of pairs of neighbouring variables and a list of conditional independence relations. Upon an assumption on the tails of the Markov kernels associated to these pairs, the conditional distribution of the self-normalized random vector when the variable at the root of the tree tends to infinity converges weakly to a random vector of coupled random walks called tail tree. If, in addition, the conditioning variable has a regularly varying tail, the Markov tree satisfies a form of one…
This paper studies the boundary behaviour of $λ$-polyharmonic functions for the simple random walk operator on a regular tree, where $λ$ is complex and $|λ|> ρ$, the $\ell^2$-spectral radius of the random walk. In particular, subject to normalisation by spherical, resp. polyspherical functions, Dirichlet and Riquier problems at infinity are solved and a non-tangential Fatou theorem is proved.
For the Gaussian free field on a $(d + 1)$-regular tree with $d \geq 2$, we study the percolative properties of its level sets in the critical and the near-critical regime. In particular, we show the continuity of the percolation probability, derive an exact symptotic tail estimate for the cardinality of the connected component of the critical level set, and describe the asymptotic behaviour of the percolation probability in the near-critical regime.
In invasion percolation, the edges of successively maximal weight (the outlets) divide the invasion cluster into a chain of ponds separated by outlets. On the regular tree, the ponds are shown to grow exponentially, with law of large numbers, central limit theorem and large deviation results. The tail asymptotics for a fixed pond are also studied and are shown to be related to the asymptotics of a critical percolation cluster, with a logarithmic correction.
It is known that the Kesten-Stigum reconstruction bound is tight for roughly symmetric binary channels. In this paper, we will adopt a refined analysis of moment recursion on a weighted version of the magnetization, which is engaged in Sly [2011] to handle the symmetric Potts model, and establish the critical condition of the asymmetric Ising model to make Kesten-Stigum bound the reconstruction threshold on regular $d$-ary trees.
We consider Bernoulli bond percolation on the product graph of a regular tree and a line. Schonmann showed that there are a.s. infinitely many infinite clusters at $p=p_u$ by using a certain function $α(p)$. The function $α(p)$ is defined by a exponential decay rate of probability that two vertices of the same layer are connected. We show the critical probability $p_c$ can be written by using $α(p)$. In other words, we construct another definition of the critical probability.
We study the weak limit of the arboreal gas along any exhaustion of a regular tree with wired boundary conditions. We prove that this limit exists, does not depend on the choice of exhaustion, and undergoes a phase transition. Below and at criticality, we prove the model is equivalent to bond percolation. Above criticality, we characterise the model as the superposition of critical bond percolation and a random collection of infinite one-ended paths. This provides a simple example of an arboreal gas model that continues to exhibit critical-like behaviour throughout its supercritical phase.
We study Random Walks in an i.i.d. Random Environment (RWRE) defined on $b$-regular trees. We prove a functional central limit theorem (FCLT) for transient processes, under a moment condition on the environment. We emphasize that we make no uniform ellipticity assumptions. Our approach relies on regenerative levels, i.e. levels that are visited exactly once. On the way, we prove that the distance between consecutive regenerative levels have a geometrically decaying tail. In the second part of this paper, we apply our results to Linearly Edge-Reinforced Random Walk (LERRW) to prove FCLT when th…
We present a proof of the power law decay of magnetic moment for the $q$-state antiferromagnetic Potts model on the regular tree at the critical temperature, and also justify that the exact exponent is $\frac{1}{2}$. Our proof relies on the assumption of the uniqueness at the critical temperature, which has been established for $q=3,4$, and for $q \ge 5$ with large degree. An iterative contraction inequality is developed for independent interests.
We give a motivation and gentle introduction into the regularity structure and model introduced by Otto, Sauer, Smith and Weber, which fall into the framework of Hairer, but have a greedier index set than the one given by trees. We do this here for a simple quasi-linear parabolic equation and assume that the driving noise is so regular that no renormalization is needed. We introduce the abstract model space $\mathsf{T}$ and its grading, the pre-model $\mathbfΠ$, the centered model $Π_x$, the structure group $\mathsf{G}$, and the re-centering transformations $Γ_{xy}$. Using integration and reco…
The Arboreal gas model on a finite graph $G$ is the Bernoulli bond percolation on $G$ conditioned on the event that the sampled subgraph is a forest. In this short note we study the arboreal gas on a regular tree wired at the leaves and obtain a comprehensive description of the weak limit of this model.
Consider a low temperature stochastic Ising model in the phase coexistence regime with Markov semigroup $P_t$. A fundamental and still largely open problem is the understanding of the long time behavior of $\d_\h P_t$ when the initial configuration $\h$ is sampled from a highly disordered state $ν$ (e.g. a product Bernoulli measure or a high temperature Gibbs measure). Exploiting recent progresses in the analysis of the mixing time of Monte Carlo Markov chains for discrete spin models on a regular $b$-ary tree $\Tree^b$, we tackle the above problem for the Ising and hard core gas (independent …
We estimate the critical temperature of a family of quantum spin systems on regular trees of large degree. The systems include the spin-$\frac12$ XXZ model and the spin-1 nematic model. Our formula is conjectured to be valid for large-dimensional cubic lattices. Our method of proof uses a probabilistic representation in terms of random loops.
