Physical phenomena driven by topological properties, such as the quantum Hall effect, have the appealing feature to be robust with respect to external perturbations. Lately, a new class of materials has emerged manifesting their topological properties at room temperature and without the need of external magnetic fields. These topological insulators are band insulators with large spin-orbit interactions and exhibit the quantum spin-Hall (QSH) effect. Here we investigate the transition between QSH and normal insulating phases under topological deformations of a two-dimensional lattice. We demonstrate that the QSH phase present in the honeycomb lattice looses its robustness as the occupancy of extra lattice sites is allowed. Furthermore, we propose a method for verifying our predictions with fermionic cold atoms in optical lattices. In this context, the spin-orbit interaction is engineered via an appropriate synthetic gauge field.
The non-trivial magnon band topology and its consequent responses have been extensively studied in two-dimensional magnetisms. However, the triangular lattice antiferromagnet (TLAF), the best-known frustrated two-dimensional magnet, has received less attention than the closely related Kagome system, because of the spin-chirality cancellation in the umbrella ground state of the undistorted TLAF. In this work, we study the band topology and the thermal Hall effect (THE) of the TLAF with (anti-)trimerization distortion under the external perpendicular magnetic field using the linearized spin wave…

We study quantization conditions of the Hall conductivity for a two dimensional system described by a double exchange Hamiltonian with and without an external magnetic field. This is obtained by an extension of the topological arguments familiar from the theory of the integer quantum Hall effect. The quantization conditions are related to spontaneous breaking of spin O(3), time-reversal, and spin chiral symmetries. Extension to systems with higher dimensions is briefly discussed.
In this paper, we study transport properties of non-equilibrium systems under the application of light in many-terminal measurements, using the Floquet picture. We propose and demonstrate that the quantum transport properties can be controlled in materials such as graphene and topological insulators, via the application of light. Remarkably, under the application of off-resonant light, topological transport properties can be induced; these systems exhibits quantum Hall effects in the absence of a magnetic field with a near quantization of the Hall conductance, realizing so-called quantum Hall …
We uncover topological features of neutral particle-hole pair excitations of correlated quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulators whose approximately flat conduction and valence bands have equal and opposite non-zero Chern number. Using an exactly solvable model we show that the underlying band topology affects both the center-of-mass and relative motion of particle-hole bound states. This leads to the formation of topological exciton bands whose features are robust to nonuniformity of both the dispersion and the Berry curvature. We apply these ideas to recently-reported broken-symmetry spontane…
The two-dimensional (2D) metal PtCoO$_2$ is renowned for the lowest room temperature resistivity among all oxides, close to that of the top two materials Ag and Cu. In addition, we theoretically predict a strong intrinsic spin Hall effect. This originates from six strongly-tilted Dirac cones that we find in the electronic structure near the Fermi surface, where a gap is opened by large spin-orbit coupling (SOC). This is underpinned by rich topological properties; in particular, the phenomenology of a mirror Chern metal is realized not exactly, but very accurately, on account of an approximate …
One dimensional tight binding models such as Aubry-Andre-Harper (AAH) model (with onsite cosine potential) and the integrable Maryland model (with onsite tangent potential) have been the subject of extensive theoretical research in localization studies. AAH can be directly mapped onto the two dimensional Hofstadter model which manifests the integer quantum Hall topology on a lattice. However, no such connection has been made for the Maryland model (MM). In this work, we describe a generalized model that contains AAH and MM as the limiting cases with the MM lying precisely at a topological quan…
The intrinsic spin Hall effect (SHE) originates from the topology of the Bloch bands in momentum space. The duality between real space and momentum space calls for a spin Hall effect induced from a real space topology in analogy to the topological Hall effect (THE) of skyrmions. We theoretically demonstrate the topological spin Hall effect (TSHE) in which a pure transverse spin current is generated from a skyrmion spin texture.
Topology is key in describing unconventional quantum phases of matter and devising robust quantum technology. Exactly how topology mixes with quantum mechanics remains largely unclear, as testified by the lack of a unifying microscopic theory for the ever-expanding and still puzzling transport behavior of electrons in the Quantum Hall Effect. Here we formulate a microscopic theory able to quantitatively describe the large wealth of Quantum Hall physics starting from one basic assumption, that the topological constraint in actual space leads to a superposition of states in the associated angula…
Skyrmion lattices as a novel type of chiral spin states are attracting increasing attention, owing to their peculiar properties stemming from real-space topological properties. At the same time, the properties of magnetic Weyl semimetals with complex $k$-space topology are moving into the focus of research in spintronics. We consider the Hall transport properties and orbital magnetism of skyrmion lattices imprinted in topological semimetals, by employing a minimal model of a 2D mixed Weyl semimetal which, as a function of the magnetization direction, exhibits two Chern insulator phases separat…
Monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) in the 2H structural phase have been recently classified as higher-order topological insulators (HOTI), protected by $C_3$ rotation symmetry. In addition, theoretical calculations show an orbital Hall plateau in the insulating gap of TMDs, characterized by an orbital Chern number. We explore the correlation between these two phenomena in TMD monolayers in two structural phases: the noncentrosymmetric 2H and the centrosymmetric 1T. Using density functional theory, we confirm the characteristics of 2H-TMDs and reveal that 1T-TMDs are identifi…

Designing photonic topological insulators is highly non-trivial because it requires inversion of band symmetries around the band gap, which was so far done using intuition combined with meticulous trial and error. Here we take a completely different approach: we consider the design of photonic topological insulators as an inverse design problem and use topology optimization to maximize the transmission through an edge mode with a sharp bend. Two design domains composed of two different, but initially identical, C$_\text{6v}$-symmetric unit cells define the geometrical design problem. Remarkabl…
Using a two-dimensional square lattice Heisenberg model with a Rashba-type Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, we demonstrate that chiral spin fluctuations can give rise to a thermal Hall effect in the absence of any static spin texture or momentum space topology. It is shown by means of Monte Carlo and stochastic spin dynamics simulations that the thermal Hall response is finite at elevated temperature outside of the linear spin wave regime and consistent with the presence of thermal fluctuation-induced nontrivial topology. Our result suggests that the high-fluctuation phases outside of the co…
We propose an unconventional type of Hall effect in a topological Dirac semimetal with ferromagnetic electrodes. The topological Dirac semimetal itself has time-reversal symmetry, whereas attached ferromagnetic electrodes break it, causing the large Hall response. This induced Hall effect is a characteristic of the helical surface/edge states that arise in topological materials, such as topological Dirac semimetals or quantum spin Hall insulators. We compute the Hall conductance/resistance and the Hall angle by using a lattice model with four-terminal geometry. For topological Dirac semimetals…
We show that optically excited electrons by a circularly polarized light in a semiconductor with spin-orbit coupling subject to a weak electric field will carry a Hall current transverse to the electric field. This light induced Hall effect is a result of quantum interference of the light and the electric field, and can be viewed as a physical consequence of the spin current induced by the electric field. The light induced Hall conductance is calculated for the p-type GaAs bulk material, and the n-type and p-type quantum well structures.
We measure the IQHE on macroscopic (1.5cm x 1.5cm) "quick 'n' dirty" prepared III-V heterostructure samples with van der Pauw and modified Corbino geometries at 1.3 K. We compare our results with (i) data taken on smaller specimens, among them samples with a standard Hall bar geometry, (ii) results of our numerical analysis taking inhomogenities of the 2DEG into account. Our main finding is a confirmation of the expected robustness of the IQHE which favours the development of wide plateaux for small filling factors and very large sample sizes (here with areas 10,000 times larger than in standa…
We consider the effect of microwave radiation on the Hall resistivity in two-dimension electron systems. It is shown that the photon-assisted impurity scattering of electrons can result in oscillatory dependences of both dissipative and Hall components of the conductivity and resistivity tensors on the ratio of radiation frequency to cyclotron frequency. The Hall resistivity can include a component induced by microwave radiation which is an even function of the magnetic field. The phase of the dissipative resistivity oscillations and the polarization dependence of their amplitude are compared …
The quantum magnetotransport properties of a monolayer of molybdenum disulfide are derived using linear response theory. Especially, the effect of topological terms on longitudinal and Hall conductivity is analyzed. The Hall conductivity exhibits fractional steps in the integer quantum Hall regime. Further complete spin and valley polarization of the longitudinal conductivity is seen in presence of these topological terms. Finally, the Shubnikov-de Hass oscillations are suppressed or enhanced contingent on the sign of these topological terms.
The discovery and realization of topological insulators, a phase of matter which hosts metallic boundary states when the $d$-dimension insulating bulk is confined to ($d-1$)-dimensions, led to several potential applications. Recently, it was shown that protected topological states can manifest in ($d-2$)-dimensions, such as hinge and corner states for three- and two-dimensional systems, respectively. These nontrivial materials are named higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs). Here we show a connection between spin Hall effect and HOTIs using a combination of {\it ab initio} calculations a…
It is observed experimentally that the sign of the Hall resistance can be flipped by a dc electric current in the twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) at 3/4 filling of the four-fold degenerate conduction flat bands. The experiment implies a switching of the valley polarization (VP) and topology in TBG. Here we present a theory on the current-induced switching of VP and topology. The presence of current in the bulk causes {the} redistribution of {electron occupation} in bands near the Fermi energy, which then deforms and shifts the band dispersion due to the Coulomb interaction. Above a critical cur…
Spin accumulation and spin transfer torques induced by Spin Hall Effect in bi-layer structures comprising ferromagnetic and paramagnetic materials are theoretically investigated. The charge and spin diffusion equations taking into account spin-flip and spin Hall effect are formulated and solved analytically and numerically for in structures with simplified and complex geometry, respectively. It is demonstrated that spin torques could be efficiently produced by means of Spin Hall effect which may be further enhanced by modifying structure geometry.
The quantum Hall effect has been predicted and discovered in various condensed-matter systems. A promising quantum material for such topological effects is graphene. We report the numerical observation of a curvature-induced spin-Hall effect in a monolayer graphene Möbius strip. The solution of the Dirac equation on the nontrivial and non-Euclidean manifold reveals that despite the absence of a Hall current, a spin-Hall current is a natural consequence for such a topology, as predicted from symmetry arguments.
We report the observation of the crossover between the extrinsic and intrinsic spin Hall effect induced by alloying. We found that the spin Hall angle, the ratio of the spin Hall conductivity to the electric conductivity, changes drastically by tuning the composition of Au-Cu alloy. The spin Hall angle changes the sign only in a limited range of the Cu concentration due to the extrinsic skew scattering, while the intrinsic contribution becomes dominant with increasing the Cu concentration. This observation provides essential information for fundamental understanding of spin-orbit physics.
After the experimental realization, the Berry curvature dipole (BCD) induced nonlinear Hall effect (NLHE) has attracted tremendous interest to the condensed matter community. Here, we investigate another family of Hall effect, namely, chiral anomaly induced nonlinear Hall effect (CNHE) in multi-Weyl semimetal (mWSM). In contrast to the BCD induced NLHE, CNHE appears because of the combination of both chiral anomaly and anomalous velocity due to non-trivial Berry curvature. Using the semiclassical Boltzmann theory within the relaxation time approximation, we show that, in contrast to the chiral…
Usually the quantum spin Hall states are expected to possess gapless, helical edge modes. Are there clean, non-interacting, quantum spin Hall states without gapless, edge modes? We show the generic, $n$-fold-symmetric, momentum planes of three-dimensional, stable Dirac semi-metals, which are orthogonal to the direction of nodal separation are examples of such generalized quantum spin Hall systems. We demonstrate that the planes lying between two Dirac points and the celebrated Bernevig-Zhang-Hughes model support identical quantized, non-Abelian Berry flux of magnitude $2 π$. Consequently, both…
We examine the radiation induced modification of the Hall effect in high mobility GaAs/AlGaAs devices that exhibit vanishing resistance under microwave excitation. The modification in the Hall effect upon irradiation is characterized by (a) a small reduction in the slope of the Hall resistance curve with respect to the dark value, (b) a periodic reduction in the magnitude of the Hall resistance, $R_{xy}$, that correlates with an increase in the diagonal resistance, $R_{xx}$, and (c) a Hall resistance correction that disappears as the diagonal resistance vanishes.
We study dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) induced by breakdown of the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect. We find that voltage-current characteristics depend on current sweep rates at the quantum Hall states of Landau level filling factors $ν$ = 1, 2/3, and 1/3. The sweep rate dependence is attributed to DNP occurring in the breakdown regime of FQH states. Results of a pump and probe experiment show that the polarities of the DNP induced in the breakdown regimes of the FQH states is opposite to that of the DNP induced in the breakdown regimes of odd-integer quantum Hall states.
We study the extrinsic spin Hall effect induced by Ir impurities in Cu by injecting a pure spin current into a CuIr wire from a lateral spin valve structure. While no spin Hall effect is observed without Ir impurity, the spin Hall resistivity of CuIr increases linearly with the impurity concentration. The spin Hall angle of CuIr, $(2.1 \pm 0.6)$% throughout the concentration range between 1% and 12%, is practically independent of temperature. These results represent a clear example of predominant skew scattering extrinsic contribution to the spin Hall effect in a nonmagnetic alloy.
Topology plays a central role in nearly all disciplines of physics, yet its applications have so far been restricted to closed, lossless systems in thermodynamic equilibrium. Given that many physical systems are open and may include gain and loss mechanisms, there is an eminent need to reexamine topology within the context of non-Hermitian theories that describe open, lossy systems. The recent generalization of the Chern number to non-Hermitian Hamiltonians initiated this reexamination; however, there is so far no established connection between a non-Hermitian topological invariant and the qua…
Similar to the Landauer electric dipole created around an impurity by the electric current, a spin polarized cloud of electrons can be induced by the intrinsic spin-Hall effect near a spin independent elastic scatterer. It is shown that in the ballistic range around the impurity, such a cloud appears in the case of Rashba spin-orbit interaction, even though the bulk spin-Hall current is absent.
In a two-dimensional electron gas, the quantized Hall conductance can be induced by a strong magnetic field, known as the quantum Hall effect, and it can also result from the strong exchange coupling of magnetic ions, dubbed as the "quantum anomalous Hall effect". The quantum Hall effect requires the out-of-plane magnetic field, and similarly, it is commonly believed that the magnetization should be out-of-plane for the quantum anomalous Hall effect. In the present work, we find this condition is not necessary and predict that the quantum anomalous Hall effect can also be induced by the purely…
The stability to interactions and disorder of the quantum spin Hall effect (QSHE) proposed for time-reversal-invariant 2D systems is discussed. The QSHE requires an energy gap in the bulk and gapless edge modes that conduct spin-up and spin-down excitations in opposite directions. When the number of Kramers pairs of edge modes is odd, certain one-particle scattering processes are forbidden due to a topological $\mathbb{Z}_2$ index. We show that in a many-body description, there are other scattering processes that can localize the edge modes and destroy the QSHE: the region of stability for bot…
We develop a theory of the valley Hall effect in high-quality graphene samples, in which strain fluctuation-induced random gauge potentials have been suggested as the dominant source of disorder. We find a near-quantized value of valley Hall conductivity in the band transport regime, which originates from an enhanced side jump of a Dirac electron when it scatters off the gauge potential. By assuming a small residue charge density our theory reproduces qualitatively the temperature- and gap-dependence of the observed valley Hall effect at the charge neutral point. Our study suggests that the va…
The nonlinear Hall effect has opened the door towards deeper understanding of topological states of matter. It can be observed as the double-frequency Hall voltage response to an ac longitudinal current in the presence of time-reversal symmetry. Disorder plays indispensable roles in various linear Hall effects, such as the localization in the quantized Hall effects and the extrinsic mechanisms of the anomalous, spin, and valley Hall effects. Unlike in the linear Hall effects, disorder enters the nonlinear Hall effect even in the leading order. However, the disorder-induced contribution to the …
We show that an energy gap is induced in graphene by light-matter coupling to a circularly polarized photon mode in a cavity. Using many-body perturbation theory we compute the electronic spectra which exhibit photon-dressed sidebands akin to Floquet sidebands for laser-driven materials. In contrast with Floquet topological insulators, in which a strictly quantized Hall response is induced by light only for off-resonant driving in the high-frequency limit, the photon-dressed Dirac fermions in the cavity show a quantized Hall response characterized by an integer Chern number. Specifically for g…
We demonstrate the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in single-layer graphene exchange-coupled to an atomically flat yttrium iron garnet (YIG) ferromagnetic thin film. The anomalous Hall conductance has magnitude of ~0.09(2e2/h) at low temperatures and is measurable up to ~ 300 K. Our observations indicate not only proximity-induced ferromagnetism in graphene/YIG with large exchange interaction, but also enhanced spin-orbit coupling which is believed to be inherently weak in ideal graphene. The proximity-induced ferromagnetic order in graphene can lead to novel transport phenomena such as the quanti…
The influence of microwave irradiation on dissipative and Hall resistance in high-quality bilayer electron systems is investigated experimentally. We observe a deviation from odd symmetry under magnetic field reversal in the microwave-induced Hall resistance $ΔR_{xy}$ whereas the dissipative resistance $ΔR_{xx}$ obeys even symmetry. Studies of $ΔR_{xy}$ as a function of the microwave electric field and polarization exhibit a strong and non-trivial power and polarization dependence. The obtained results are discussed in connection to existing theoretical models of microwave-induced photoconduct…
The quantum Hall system can be used to study many-body physics owing to its multiple internal electronic degrees of freedom and tunability. While quantum phase transitions have been studied intensively, research on the temperature-induced phase transitions of this system is limited. We measured the pure bulk conductivity of a quantum Hall antiferromagnetic state in bilayer graphene over a wide range of temperatures and revealed the two-step phase transition associated with the breaking of the long-range order and short-range antiferromagnetic order. Our findings are fundamental to understandin…
We propose a new approach to generate and detect spin currents in graphene, based on a large spin-Hall response arising near the neutrality point in the presence of external magnetic field. Spin currents result from the imbalance of the Hall resistivity for the spin-up and spin-down carriers induced by Zeeman interaction, and do not involve spin-orbit interaction. Large values of the spin-Hall response achievable in moderate magnetic fields produced by on-chip sources, and up to room temperature, make the effect viable for spintronics applications.
Inversion symmetry breaking and spin-orbit coupling lead to valley and spin Hall effect in MoS2. Because of the large valley separation in momentum space, the valley index is expected to be robust. In this paper, quantum Hall effect in MoS2 originated from Berry curvature is analyzed after review of symmetry structure and spin-orbit coupling Hamiltonian of MoS2. Finally an expression and rough calculation is given for valley and spin Hall effect.
We consider bilayer graphene in the presence of spin orbit coupling, to assess its behavior as a topological insulator. The first Chern number $n$ for the energy bands of single and bilayer graphene is computed and compared. It is shown that for a given valley and spin, $n$ in a bilayer is doubled with respect to the monolayer. This implies that bilayer graphene will have twice as many edge states as single layer graphene, which we confirm with numerical calculations and analytically in the case of an armchair terminated surface. Bilayer graphene is a weak topological insulator, whose surface …
We study electric transport along an integer quantum Hall edge where the proximity effect is induced due to a coupling to a superconductor. Such an edge exhibits two Majorana-Weyl fermions with different group velocities set by the induced superconducting pairing. We show that this structure of the spectrum results in interference fringes that can be observed in both the two-terminal conductance and shot noise. We develop a complete analytical theory of such fringes for an arbitrary smooth profile of the induced pairing.
We develop a hydrodynamic theory for an electron system exhibiting the anomalous Hall effect, and show that an additional anomalous Hall effect is induced by a vorticity generated near boundaries. We calculate the momentum flux and force proportional to the electric field using linear response theory. The hydrodynamic equation is obtained by replacing the local electric field with the electric current, focusing on a scale that is sufficiently larger than the mean free path. It is demonstrated that there is a coupling between a vorticity of an electric current and a magnetization which generate…
