Skyrmion lattices as a novel type of chiral spin states are attracting increasing attention, owing to their peculiar properties stemming from real-space topological properties. At the same time, the properties of magnetic Weyl semimetals with complex $k$-space topology are moving into the focus of research in spintronics. We consider the Hall transport properties and orbital magnetism of skyrmion lattices imprinted in topological semimetals, by employing a minimal model of a 2D mixed Weyl semimetal which, as a function of the magnetization direction, exhibits two Chern insulator phases separated by a Weyl state for an an in-plane magnetization direction. We find that while the orbital magnetization is topologically robust and Hall transport properties are very sensitive to the details of the spin distribution in accordance to the behavior expected from the recently discovered chiral Hall effect[1], their behavior in the region of the Chern insulator gap is largely determined by the properties of the so-called mixed topology ring states, emerging in domain walls that separate the skyrmion core from the ferromagnetic background. In particular, we show that these localized ring states possess a given orbital chirality which reverses sign as a function of the skyrmion radius, thereby mediating a smooth switching dynamics of the orbital magnetization of the skyrmion lattice. We speculate that while the emergent ring states can possibly play a role in the physics of Majorana states, probing their properties experimentally can provide insights into the details of skyrmionic spin structures.
Nodal-line semimetals with magnetic orders have been theoretically predicted and experimentally observed in only few compounds. We theoretically explore the electronic structure in bulk and boundary of such a magnetic nodal-line state by introducing magnetism in topological Dirac semimetal (TDSM). TDSMs, such as $\mathrm{Cd_3 As_2}$ and $\mathrm{Na_3 Bi}$, are characterized by a pair of spin-degenerate Dirac points protected by rotational symmetries of crystals. By introducing local magnetic moments coupled to the electron spins in the lattice model of TDSM, we show that the TDSM can turn into…

We experimentally investigate second-harmonic transverse voltage response to ac electrical current for a magnetic nodal-line semimetal Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$. For zero magnetic field, the observed response depends as a square of the longitudinal current, as it should be expected for non-linear Hall effect. The magnetic field behavior is found to be sophisticated: while the first-harmonic response shows the known anomalous Hall hysteresis in FGT, the second-harmonic Hall voltage is characterized by the pronounced high-field hysteresis and flat ($B$-independent) region with curves touching at low fields…
The review is aimed at highlighting the aspects of topological superconductivity in the absence of spin-orbit interaction in two-dimensional systems with long-range non-collinear spin ordering or magnetic skyrmions. Another purpose is to give a brief introduction to the new concept of topological superconductivity, i.e. higher-order topology in two-dimensional systems including spin-orbit coupled structures. The formation of Majorana modes due to magnetic textures is discussed. The role of effective triplet pairings and odd fermion parity of the ground state wave function in different systems …
In magnetic Weyl semimetals, where magnetism breaks time-reversal symmetry, large magnetically sensitive anomalous transport responses are anticipated that could be useful for topological spintronics. The identification of new magnetic Weyl semimetals is therefore in high demand, particularly since in these systems Weyl node configurations may be easily modified using magnetic fields. Here we explore experimentally the magnetic semimetal PrAlGe, and unveil a direct correspondence between easy-axis Pr ferromagnetism and anomalous Hall and Nernst effects. With sizes of both the anomalous Hall co…
When electrons are driven through unconventional magnetic structures, such as skyrmions, they experience emergent electromagnetic fields that originate several Hall effects. Independently, ground state emergent magnetic fields can also lead to orbital magnetism, even without the spin-orbit interaction. The close parallel between the geometric theories of the Hall effects and of the orbital magnetization raises the question: does a skyrmion display topological orbital magnetism? Here we first address the smallest systems with nonvanishing emergent magnetic field, trimers, characterizing the orb…
We study magnetization reversal and first order reversal curves for two different magnetic topological semimetals, Co3Sn2S2 and Fe3GeTe2, in a wide temperature range. For the magnetization reversal, we observe strong temperature dependence of the initial (low-temperature) step-like magnetization switchings, so the inverted hysteresis appears at high temperatures. Usually, the inverted hysteresis is a fingerprint of material with two independent magnetic phases, the inversion reflects the phase interaction. First order reversal curve analysis confirms the two-phase behavior even at the lowest t…

Controlling magnetism with electric fields is a key challenge to develop future energy-efficient devices, however, the switching between inversion symmetric states, e.g. magnetization up and down as used in current technology, is not straightforward, since the electric field does not break time-reversal symmetry. Here, we demonstrate that local electric fields can be used to reversibly switch between a magnetic skyrmion and the ferromagnetic state. These two states are topologically inequivalent, and we find that the direction of an electric field directly determines the final state. This obse…
Recent theoretical and experimental attemps have been successful in finding magnetic Weyl semimetal phases, which show both nodal-point structure in the electronic bands and magnetic orders. Beyond uniform ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic orders, nonuniform magnetic textures, such as domain walls and skyrmions, may even more enrich the properties of the Weyl electrons in such materials. This article gives a topical review on interplay between Weyl electrons and magnetic textures in those magnetic Weyl semimetals. The basics of magnetic textures in non-topological magnetic metals are reviewed…
Magnetic skyrmions are nanoscale whirls of magnetism that can be propagated with electrical currents. The repulsion between skyrmions inspires their use for reversible computing based on the elastic billiard ball collisions proposed for conservative logic in 1982. Here we evaluate the logical and physical reversibility of this skyrmion logic paradigm, as well as the limitations that must be addressed before dissipation-free computation can be realized.
Skyrmions are topological solitons that emerge in many physical contexts. In magnetism, they appear as textures of the spin-density field stabilized by different competing interactions and characterized by a topological charge that counts the number of times the order parameter wraps the sphere. They can behave as classical objects, when the spin texture varies slowly on the scale of the microscopic lattice of the magnet. However, the fast development of experimental tools to create and stabilize skyrmions in thin magnetic films has lead to a rich variety of textures, sometimes of atomistic si…
We discuss a geometric perspective on chiral ferromagnetism. Much like gravity becomes the effect of spacetime curvature in theory of relativity, the Dzyaloshinski-Moriya interaction arises in a Heisenberg model with nontrivial spin parallel transport. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya vectors serve as a background SO(3) gauge field. In 2 spatial dimensions, the model is partly solvable when an applied magnetic field matches the gauge curvature. At this special point, solutions to the Bogomolny equation are exact excited states of the model. We construct a variational ground state in the form of a sky…
Being encouraged by the interplay between topology, superconductivity and magnetism, we experimentally investigate charge transport through the interface between the Nb superconductor and the time-reversal symmetry breaking Weyl semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$. In addition to the proximity induced superconducting gap, we observe several subgap features, among which the most interesting is the prominent subgap zero-bias anomaly, absolutely stable against external magnetic fields up to the critical field of Nb. As the promising scenario for the zero-bias anomaly to appear in transport characteristic…
Magnetic skyrmions, as a whirling spin texture with axisymmetry, cannot be propelled by a uniform magnetic field. Therefore, reported skyrmion motions have been induced using other sorts of stimuli; typically, electric currents in magnetic metals as well as spin waves, thermal gradient, and field gradient have manifested their ability to drive skyrmion motion. Here, we demonstrate, through micromagnetic simulations and analytically, that magnetic skyrmions can be displaced by a uniform perpendicular magnetic field via a domain-wall (DW) mediator. For a fixed field strength, the velocity of a s…
We give a theoretical study on the magnetic properties of monolayer nanodisks with both Heisenberg exchange and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interactions. In particular, we survey the magnetic effects caused by anisotropy, external magnetic field, and disk size when DM interaction is present by means of a new quantum simulation method based on mean-field theory. This computational approach finds that uniaxial anisotropy and transverse magnetic field enhances the net magnetization as well as increases the transition temperature of the vortex phase while preserving the chiralities of the nanodisks.…
Storing and accessing information in atomic-scale magnets requires magnetic imaging techniques with single-atom resolution. Here, we show simultaneous detection of the spin-polarization and exchange force, with or without the flow of current, with a new method, which combines scanning tunneling microscopy and non-contact atomic force microscopy. To demonstrate the application of this new method, we characterize the prototypical nano-skyrmion lattice formed on a monolayer of Fe/Ir(111). We resolve the square magnetic lattice by employing magnetic exchange force microscopy, demonstrating its app…
The interplay between magnetism and band topology is a focus of current research on magnetic topological systems. Based on first-principle calculations and symmetry analysis, we reveal multiple intriguing topological states can be realized in a single system EuAgAs, controlled by the magnetic ordering. The material is Dirac semimetal in the paramagnetic state, with a pair of accidental Dirac points. Under different magnetic configurations, the Dirac points can evolve into magnetic triply-degenerate points, magnetic linear and double Weyl points, or being gapped out and making the system a topo…
The interplay between dimensionality and topology manifests in magnetism via both exotic texture morphology and novel dynamics. A free magnetic skyrmion exhibits the skyrmion Hall effect under electric currents. Once it is confined in one-dimensional (1D) channels, the skyrmion Hall effect would be suppressed, and the current-driven skyrmion speed should be boosted by the non-adiabatic spin transfer torque \b{eta}. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that stripes of a spatially modulated spin helix serve as natural 1D channels to restrict skyrmion. Using FeGe as a benchmark, an interstitial sk…
Topological states of matter have been a subject of intensive studies in recent years because of their exotic properties such as the topologically protected edge and surface states. The initial studies were exclusively for electron systems. It is now known that topological states can also exist for other particles. Indeed, topologically protected edge states have already been found for phonons and photons. In spite of active searching for topological states in many fields, the studies in magnetism are relatively rare although topological states are apparently important and useful in magnonics.…
We report experimental coupling of chiral magnetism and superconductivity in [IrFeCoPt]/Nb heterostructures. The stray field of skyrmions with radius ~50nm is sufficient to nucleate antivortices in a 25nm Nb film, with unique signatures in the magnetization, critical current and flux dynamics, corroborated via simulations. We also detect a thermally-tunable Rashba-Edelstein exchange coupling in the isolated skyrmion phase. This realization of a strongly interacting skyrmion-(anti)vortex system opens a path towards controllable topological hybrid materials, unattainable to date.
Twisted double- and mono-bilayer graphene are graphene-based moiré materials hosting strongly correlated fermions in a gate-tunable conduction band with a topologically non-trivial character. Using unbiased exact diagonalization complemented by unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculations, we find that the strong electron-electron interactions lead to a non-coplanar magnetic state, which has the same symmetries as the tetrahedral antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice and can be thought of as a skyrmion lattice commensurate with the moiré scale, competing with a set of ferromagnetic, topological …
Pursuing topological phases in natural and artificial materials is one of the central topics in modern physical science and engineering. In classical magnetic systems, spin waves (or magnons) and magnetic solitons (such as domain wall, vortex, skyrmion, etc) represent two important excitations. Recently, the topological insulator and semimetal states in magnon- and soliton-based crystals (or metamaterials) have attracted growing attention owing to their interesting dynamics and promising applications for designing robust spintronic devices. Here, we give an overview of current progress of topo…
Magnetic skyrmions are nanoscale spin configurations that can be efficiently created and manipulated. They hold great promises for next-generation spintronics applications. In parallel to these developments, the interplay of magnetism, superconductivity and spin-orbit coupling has proved to be a versatile platform for engineering topological superconductivity predicted to host non-abelian excitations, Majorana zero modes. We show that topological superconductivity can be induced by proximitizing magnetic skyrmions and conventional superconductors, without need for additional ingredients. Apart…
Here we report the investigation of the anomalous Hall effect in the magnetically doped topological insulator (V,Bi,Sb)2Te3. We find it contains two contributions of opposite sign. Both components are found to depend differently on carrier density, leading to a sign inversion of the total anomalous Hall effect as a function of applied gate voltage. The two contributions are found to have different magnetization reversal fields, which in combination with a temperature dependent study points towards the coexistence of two ferromagnetic orders in the system. Moreover, we find that the sign of tot…
With the recent discovery of Weyl semimetals, the phenomenon of negative magnetoresistance (MR) is attracting renewed interest. While small negative MR can occur due to the suppression of spin scattering or weak localization, large negative MR is rare in materials, and when it happens, it is usually related to magnetism. The large negative MR in Weyl semimetals is peculiar in that it is unrelated to magnetism and comes from chiral anomaly. Here we report that there is a new mechanism for large negative MR which is not related to magnetism but is related to disorder. In the newly-synthesized bu…
The orbital magnetic moment is usually associated with the relativistic spin-orbit interaction, but recently it has been shown that noncollinear magnetic structures can also be its driving force. This is important not only for magnetic skyrmions, but also for other noncollinear structures, either bulk-like or at the nanoscale, with consequences regarding their experimental detection. In this work we present a minimal model that contains the effects of both the relativistic spin-orbit interaction and of magnetic noncollinearity on the orbital magnetism. A hierarchy of models is discussed in a s…
Exploring exotic interface magnetism due to charge transfer and strong spin-orbit coupling has profound application in future development of spintronic memory. Here, the emergence, tuning and interpretation of hump-shape Hall Effect from a CaMnO3/CaIrO3/CaMnO3 trilayer structure are studied in detail. The hump signal can be recognized as Topological Hall Effect suggesting the presence of Skyrmion-like magnetic bubbles; but the debated alternative interpretation where the signal being an artefact between two cancelling Anomalous Hall Effect loops is also discussed. Firstly, by tilting the magne…
We report the magnetic and electronic transport properties of the inversion and time-reversal symmetry breaking Weyl semimetal NdAlGe. This material is analogous to NdAlSi, whose helical magnetism presents a rare example of a Weyl-mediated collective phenomenon, but with a larger spin-orbit coupling. Our neutron diffraction experiments revealed that NdAlGe, similar to NdAlSi, supports an incommensurate Ising spin density wave ($T_{\text{inc}}=6.8$ K) with a small helical spin canting of 3$^\circ$ and a long-wavelength of $\sim$ 35 nm, which transitions to a commensurate ferrimagnetic state bel…
The recent experimental confirmation of a transformation between meron and skyrmion topological spin textures in the chiral magnet Co$_8$Zn$_9$Mn$_3$ [S.-Z. Lin et al., Phys. Rev. B 91, 224407 (2015); X. Z. Yu et al., Nature 564, 95 (2018)] confirms that the skyrmion crystals discovered in 2009 [S. Mühlbauer et al., Science 323, 915 (2009)] are just the tip of the iceberg. Crystals of topological textures, including skyrmions, merons, vortices, and monopoles, can be stabilized by combining simple physical ingredients, such as lattice symmetry, frustration, and spin anisotropy. The current chal…
The ZrSiS family of compounds hosts various exotic quantum phenomena due to the presence of both topological nonsymmorphic Dirac fermions and nodal-line fermions. In this material family, the LnSbTe (Ln= lanthanide) compounds are particularly interesting owing to the intrinsic magnetism from magnetic Ln which leads to new properties and quantum states. In this work, the authors focus on the previously unexplored compound SmSbTe. The studies reveal a rare combination of a few functional properties in this material, including antiferromagnetism with possible magnetic frustration, electron correl…
First-principles density functional calculations are performed in C-BN heterojunctions. It is shown that the magnetism of the edge states in zigzag shaped graphene strips and polarity effects in BN strips team up to give a spin asymmetric screening that induces half-semimetallicity at the interface, with a gap of at least a few tenths of eV for one spin orientation and a tiny gap of hundredths of eV for the other. The dependence with ribbon widths is discussed, showing that a range of ribbon widths is required to obtain half-semimetallicity. These results open new routes for tuning electronic …

The concepts of Weyl fermions and topological semimetals emerging in three-dimensional momentum space are extensively explored owing to the vast variety of exotic properties that they give rise to. On the other hand, very little is known about semimetallic states emerging in two-dimensional magnetic materials, which present the foundation for both present and future information technology. Here, we demonstrate that including the magnetization direction into the topological analysis allows for a natural classification of topological semimetallic states that manifest in two-dimensional ferromagn…
B20 compounds are the playground for various non-trivial magnetic textures such as skyrmions, which are topologically protected states. Recent measurements on B20-MnGe indicate no clear consensus on its magnetic behavior, which is characterized by the presence of either spin-spirals or 3-dimensional objects interpreted to be a cubic lattice of hedgehogs and anti-hedgehogs. Utilizing a massively parallel linear scaling all-electron density functional algorithm, we find from full first-principles simulations on cells containing thousands of atoms that upon increase of the compound volume, the st…
Topologically protected nanoscale spin textures, known as magnetic skyrmions, possess particle-like properties and feature emergent magnetism effects. In bulk cubic heli-magnets, distinct skyrmion resonant modes are already identified using a technique like ferromagnetic resonance in spintronics. However, direct light-matter coupling between microwave photons and skyrmion resonance modes has not been demonstrated yet. Utilising two distinct cavity systems, we realise to observe a direct interaction between the cavity resonant mode and two resonant skyrmion modes, the counter-clockwise gyration…
The ZrSiS-type materials have attracted intensive attention due to the existence of various topological fermions. The magnetic version of the ZrSiS-type materials, LnSbTe (Ln = lanthanides), is an ideal candidate to explore novel exotic states due to the interaction between magnetism and topology. In this work, we report the experimental study on structural, magnetic, thermodynamic, and electronic properties for SmSbxTe2-x with various Sb content. The revealed evolutions of these properties with tuning the compositions would provide useful insights for the fundamental topological physics and t…
Various latest experiments have proven the theoretical prediction that domain walls in planar magnetic structures can channel spin waves as outstanding magnonic waveguides, establishing a superb platform for building magnonic devices. Recently, three-dimensional nanomagnetism has been boosted up and become a significant branch of magnetism, because three-dimensional magnetic structures expose a lot of emerging physics hidden behind planar ones and will inevitably provide broader room for device engineering. Skyrmions and antiSkyrmions, as natural three-dimensional magnetic configurations, are …
Switching magnetic texture via in-plane magnetic field in noncentrosymmetric dipolar magnets: From skyrmions to antiskyrmions and nontopological magnetic bubbles
External magnetic field, temperature, and spin-polarized current are usually employed to create and control nanoscale vortex-like spin configurations such as magnetic skyrmions. Although these methods have proven successful, they are not energy-efficient due to high power consumption and dissipation. Coupling between magnetic properties and mechanical deformation, the magnetoelastic (MEL) effect, offers a novel approach to energy-efficient control of magnetism at the nanoscale. It is of great interest in the context of ever-decreasing length scales of electronic and spintronic devices. Therefo…
Half topological states of matter and two-dimensional (2D) magnetism have gained much attention recently. In this paper, we propose a special topological semimetal phase called a 2D half Chern-Weyl semimetal (HCWS), which is a 2D magnetic Weyl semimetal bound to the half Chern insulator phase by symmetry, and the two phases can be converted to each other by manipulating the magnetization direction. We provide the symmetry conditions to realize this state in 2D systems with multiple screw axes. Tight-binding models with multiple basis and a predicted 2D material, monolayer TiTe, are shown as th…
