When electrons are driven through unconventional magnetic structures, such as skyrmions, they experience emergent electromagnetic fields that originate several Hall effects. Independently, ground state emergent magnetic fields can also lead to orbital magnetism, even without the spin-orbit interaction. The close parallel between the geometric theories of the Hall effects and of the orbital magnetization raises the question: does a skyrmion display topological orbital magnetism? Here we first address the smallest systems with nonvanishing emergent magnetic field, trimers, characterizing the orbital magnetic properties from first-principles. Armed with this understanding, we study the orbital magnetism of skyrmions, and demonstrate that the contribution driven by the emergent magnetic field is topological. This means that the topological contribution to the orbital moment does not change under continous deformations of the magnetic structure. Furthermore, we use it to propose a new experimental protocol for the identification of topological magnetic structures, by soft x-ray spectroscopy.
Magnetic Weyl semimetals (WSMs) have been presumed to be immune to proximity-induced spin-singlet superconducting pairing due to a chirality blockade of the regular Andreev reflection. In this work we study all possible superconducting pairing induced in a WSM sandwiched between two conventional superconductors in a Josephson junction setup. We confirm that, while conventional intra-orbital $s$-wave pairing is present on the surface of the WSM, it cannot propagate into the bulk due to the chirality blockade. However, inter-orbital $s$-wave pairing, with both even-frequency spin-singlet and odd…
In a magnetic texture, the spin of a conduction electron is forced to be aligned to the localized moment. As a result, the topology of the magnetic texture affects the electron dynamics in nontrivial ways. A representative example is the topological Hall effect in noncoplanar spin textures with finite spin chirality. While propagating in the noncoplanar spin texture, electrons acquire Berry phase, and their motion is deflected as if they were in a magnetic field. Here, we report a distinct Berry phase effect in a coplanar helimagnet: the spin moment of the conduction electron is polarized unde…

The notion that phonons can carry pseudo-angular momentum has become popular in the last decade, with recent research efforts highlighting phonon chirality, Berry curvature of phonon band structure, and the phonon Hall effect. When a phonon is resonantly coupled to a crystal electric field excitation, a so-called vibronic bound state forms. Here, we observe angular momentum transfer of $δ$Jz = $\pm$1$\hbar$ between phonons and an orbital state in a vibronic bound state of a candidate quantum spin liquid. This observation has profound implications for the engineering of phonon band structure to…
Topological aspects of the geometry of DNA and similar chiral molecules have received a lot of attention, while the topology of their electronic structure is less explored. Previous experiments have revealed that DNA can efficiently filter spin-polarized electrons between metal contacts, a process called chiral-induced spin-selectivity (CISS). However, the underlying correlation between chiral structure and electronic spin remains elusive. In this work, we reveal an orbital texture in the band structure, a topological characteristic induced by the chirality. We find that this orbital texture e…
The fractional quantum Hall state at Landau level (LL) filling factor 5/2 is extremely interesting because it is likely the first non-Abelian state, but its precise nature remains unclear after decades of study. We demonstrate this can be resolved by studying the chirality of its graviton excitations, using circularly polarized Raman scattering. We discuss the advantage of this bulk probe over the existing edge probes.
We have investigated the motion of vortex domain walls passing across non symmetric triangular notches in single Permalloy nanowires. We have measured hysteresis cycles using the focused magneto-optical Kerr effect before and beyond the notch, which allowed to probe beyond the notch the occurrence probability of clockwise (CW) and counter-clockwise (CCW) walls in tail-to-tail (TT) and head-to-head (HH) configurations. We present experimental evidence of chirality flipping provided by the vortex -- notch interaction. With a low exit angle the probability of chirality flipping increases and here…
Ultrafast terahertz spectroscopy accesses the {\em dark} excitonic ground state in resonantly-excited (6,5) SWNTs via internal, direct dipole-allowed transitions between lowest lying dark-bright pair state $\sim$6 meV. An analytical model reproduces the response which enables quantitative analysis of transient densities of dark excitons and {\em e-h} plasma, oscillator strength, transition energy renormalization and dynamics. %excitation-induced renormalization. Non-equilibrium, yet stable, quasi-1D quantum states with dark excitonic correlations rapidly emerge even with increasing off-resonan…
We introduce a new mechanism for the propulsion and separation by chirality of small ferromagnetic particles suspended in a liquid. Under the action of a uniform d.c. magnetic field H and an a.c. electric field E isomers with opposite chirality move in opposite directions. Such a mechanism could have a significant impact on a wide range of emerging technologies. The component of the chiral velocity that is odd in H is found to be proportional to the intrinsic orbital and spin angular momentum of the magnetized electrons. This effect arises because a ferromagnetic particle responds to the appli…
We propose to directly probe the chirality of Majorana edge states in 2D topological superconductors using polarization selective photon absorption. When shining circularly polarized light on a 2D topological superconductor in disk geometry, the photons can excite quasiparticles only when the polarization of the light matches the chirality of the Majorana edge states required by the angular momentum conservation. Hence one can obtain the chirality of the Majorana edge states by measuring the photon absorption rate. We show that the polarization selective photon absorption can also serve as a s…
Even if Weyl semimetals are characterized by quasiparticles with well-defined chirality, exploiting this experimentally is severely hampered by Weyl lattice-fermions coming in pairs with opposite chirality, typically causing the net chirality picked up by experimental probes to vanish. Here we show this issue can be circumvented in a controlled manner when both time-reversal- and inversion- symmetry are broken. To this end, we investigate chirality-disbalance in the carbide family RMC$_2$ (R a rare-earth and M a transition metal), showing several members to be Weyl semimetals. Using the noncen…
We study the (2+1)-dimensional Dirac oscillator in the presence of an external uniform magnetic field ($B$). We show how the change of the strength of $B$ leads to the existence of a quantum phase transition in the chirality of the system. A critical value of the strength of the external magnetic field ($B_c$) can be naturally defined in terms of physical parameters of the system. While for $B=B_c$ the fermion can be considered as a free particle without defined chirality, for $B<B_c$ ($B>B_c$) the chirality is left (right) and there exist a net potential acting on the fermion. For the three r…
Vector spin chirality is one of the fundamental characteristics of complex magnets. For a one-dimensional spin-spiral state it can be interpreted as the handedness, or rotational sense of the spiral. Here, using spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy, we demonstrate the occurrence of an atomic-scale spin-spiral in finite individual bi-atomic Fe chains on the (5x1)-Ir(001) surface. We show that the broken inversion symmetry at the surface promotes one direction of the vector spin chirality, leading to a unique rotational sense of the spiral in all chains. Correspondingly, changes in the s…
Magnetic skyrmions are localized chiral spin textures, which offer great promise to store and process information at the nanoscale. In the presence of asymmetric exchange interactions, their chirality, which governs their dynamics, is generally considered as an intrinsic parameter set during the sample deposition. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate that a gate voltage can control this key parameter. We probe the chirality of skyrmions and chiral domain walls by observing the direction of their current-induced motion and show that a gate voltage can reverse it. This local and dynamical…
Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) exhibits fascinating correlation-driven phenomena like the superconductivity and Mott insulating state, with flat bands and a chiral lattice structure. We find by quantum transport calculations that the chirality leads to a giant unidirectional magnetoresistance (UMR) in TBG, where the unidirectionality refers to the resistance change under the reversal of the direction of the current or magnetic field. We point out that flat bands significantly enhance this effect. The UMR increases quickly upon reducing the twist angle and reaches about 20\% for an angle of 1.5…
A new mechanism of spin structure-driven anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in tilted ferromagnetic metals is proposed by taking account of the d-orbital degree of freedom. We find that a conduction electron acquires a Berry phase due to the complex d-orbital wavefunction, in the presence of non-collinear spin structure and the spin orbit interaction. The AHE driven by this orbital-derived Berry phase is much larger than the AHE induced by spin chirality, and it naturally explains the salient features of spin structure-driven AHE in pyrochlore Nd$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$. Since the proposed AHE can occur even …

The orbital susceptibility for graphene is calculated exactly up to the first order with respect to the overlap integrals between neighboring atomic orbitals. The general and rigorous theory of orbital susceptibility developed in the preceding paper is applied to a model for graphene as a typical two-band model. It is found that there are contributions from interband, Fermi surface, and occupied states in addition to the Landau--Peierls orbital susceptibility. The relative phase between the atomic orbitals on the two sublattices related to the chirality of Dirac cones plays an important role. …

The interplay between superconductivity, magnetic field and spin-orbit coupling can lead to the realization of non--trivial topological phases. Recent experiments have found signatures of such phases in magnetic nanoflakes formed by nanostructures coupled to a superconducting substrate. These heterostructures comprise a topologically non-trivial region surrounded by a trivial one due to the finite magnetic exchange field induced by the magnetic nanoflake. The analysis of the topological phase diagram of such a system shows that a similar phase separation occurs by tuning the chemical potential…
