We study quasilinear evolutionary partial integro-differential equations of second order which include time fractional $p$-Laplace equations of time order less than one. By means of suitable energy estimates and De Giorgi's iteration technique we establish results asserting the global boundedness of appropriately defined weak solutions of these problems. We also show that a maximum principle is valid for such equations.
In this article, we show that a technique for showing well-posedness results for evolutionary equations in the sense of [13] established in [16] applies to a broader class of non-autonomous integro-differential-algebraic equations. Using the concept of evolutionary mappings we prove that the respective solution operators do not depend on certain parameters describing the underlying spaces in which the well-posedness results are established.
$W^{σ,p}$ estimates are studied for a class of fully nonlinear integro-differential equations of order $σ$, which are analogues of $W^{2,p}$ estimates by Caffarelli. We also present Aleksandrov-Bakelman-Pucci maximum principles, which are improvements of estimates proved by Guillen-Schwab, depending only on $L^p$ norms of inhomogeneous terms.
We prove existence of a bounded weak solution to a degenerate quasilinear subdiffusion problem with bounded measurable coefficients that may explicitly depend on time. The kernel in the involved integro-differential operator w.r.t. time belongs to the large class of ${\cal PC}$ kernels. In particular, the case of a fractional time derivative of order less than 1 is included. A key ingredient in the proof is a new compactness criterion of Aubin-Lions type which involves function spaces defined in terms of the integro-differential operator in time. Boundedness of the solution is obtained by the …
We study a nonlinear integro-differential equation arising in population dynamics. It has been already proved by Rybka, Tang and Waxman that it has a unique local in time solution. Here, after deriving appropriate a priori estimates we show that the dynamics is global in time.
We deal with a class of equations driven by nonlocal, possibly degenerate, integro-differential operators of differentiability order $s\in (0,1)$ and summability growth $p>1$, whose model is the fractional $p$-Laplacian with measurable coefficients. We state and prove several results for the corresponding weak supersolutions, as comparison principles, a priori bounds, lower semicontinuity, and many others. We then discuss the good definition of $(s,p)$-superharmonic functions, by also proving some related properties. We finally introduce the nonlocal counterpart of the celebrated Perron method…
We study a scalar integro-differential conservation law. The equation was first derived in [2] as the slow erosion limit of granular flow. Considering a set of more general erosion functions, we study the initial boundary value problem for which one can not adapt the standard theory of conservation laws. We construct approximate solutions with a fractional step method, by recomputing the integral term at each time step. A-priori L^\infty bounds and BV estimates yield convergence and global existence of BV solutions. Furthermore, we present a well-posedness analysis, showing that the solutions …
In this paper we obtain regularity results for elliptic integro-differential equations driven by the stronger effect of coercive gradient terms. This feature allows us to construct suitable strict supersolutions from which we conclude Hölder estimates for bounded subsolutions. In many interesting situations, this gives way to a priori estimates for subsolutions. We apply this regularity results to obtain the ergodic asymptotic behavior of the associated evolution problem in the case of superlinear equations. One of the surprising features in our proof is that it avoids the key ingredient which…
We propose a general strategy for solving nonlinear integro-differential evolution problems with periodic boundary conditions, where no direct maximum/minimum principle is available. This is motivated by the study of recent macroscopic models for active Brownian particles with repulsive interactions, consisting of advection-diffusion processes in the space of particle position and orientation. We focus on one of such models, namely a semilinear parabolic equation with a nonlinear active drift term, whereby the velocity depends on the particle orientation and angle-independent overall particle …
We study integro-differential inclusions in Hilbert spaces with operator-valued kernels and give sufficient conditions for the well-posedness. We show that several types of integro-differential equations and inclusions are covered by the class of evolutionary inclusions and we therefore give criteria for the well-posedness within this framework. As an example we apply our results to the equations of visco-elasticity and to a class of nonlinear integro-differential inclusions describing Phase Transition phenomena in materials with memory.
We study linear integro-differential equations in Hilbert spaces with operator-valued kernels and give sufficient conditions for the well-posedness. We show that several types of integro-differential equations are covered by the class of evolutionary equations introduced in [R. Picard. A structural observation for linear material laws in classical mathematical physics. Math. Methods Appl. Sci., 32(14):1768-1803, 2009]. We therefore give criteria for the well-posedness within this framework. As an example we apply our results to the equations of visco-elasticity.
We present a Hilbert space perspective to homogenization of standard linear evolutionary boundary value problems in mathematical physics and provide a unified treatment for (non-)periodic homogenization problems in thermodynamics, elasticity, electro-magnetism and coupled systems thereof. The approach permits the consideration of memory problems as well as differential-algebraic equations. We show that the limit equation is well-posed and causal. We rely on techniques from functional analysis and operator theory only.
We establish a priori Lipschitz estimates for unbounded solutions of second-order Hamilton-Jacobi equations in R^N in presence of an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck drift. We generalize the results obtained by Fujita, Ishii \& Loreti (2006) in several directions. The first one is to consider more general operators. We first replace the Laplacian by a general diffusion matrix and then consider a nonlocal integro-differential operator of fractional Laplacian type. The second kind of extension is to deal with more general Hamiltonians which are merely sublinear. These results are obtained for both degenerate …
We consider a integro-differential nonlinear model that describes the evolution of a population structured by a quantitative trait. The interactions between traits occur from competition for resources whose concentrations depend on the current state of the population. Following the formalism of\cite{DJMP}, we study a concentration phenomenon arising in the limit of strong selection and small mutations. We prove that the population density converges to a sum of Dirac masses characterized by the solution $ϕ$ of a Hamilton-Jacobi equation which depends on resource concentrations that we fully cha…
We study a nonlinear evolutionary partial differential equation that can be viewed as a generalization of the heat equation where the temperature gradient is a~priori bounded but the heat flux provides merely \mbox{$L^1$-coercivity}. Applying higher differentiability techniques in space and time, choosing a special weighted norm (equivalent to the Euclidean norm in $\mathbb{R}^d$), incorporating finer properties of integrable functions and using the concept of renormalized solution, we prove long-time and large-data existence and uniqueness of weak solution, with an $L^1$-integrable flux, to a…
We establish interior Schauder estimates for kinetic equations with integro-differential diffusion. We study equations of the form $f_t + v \cdot \nabla_x f = \mathcal L_v f + c$, where $\mathcal L_v$ is an integro-differential diffusion operator of order $2s$ acting in the $v$-variable. Under suitable ellipticity and Hölder continuity conditions on the kernel of $\mathcal L_v$, we obtain an a priori estimate for $f$ in a properly scaled Hölder space.
We construct an example of a one-dimensional parabolic integro-differential equation with nonlocal diffusion which does not have asymptotically finite-dimensional dynamics in the corresponding state space. This example is more natural in the class of evolutionary equations of parabolic type than those known earlier.
We apply recent results on regularity for general integro-differential equations to derive a priori estimates in Hölder spaces for the space homogeneous Boltzmann equation in the non cut-off case. We also show an a priori estimate in $L^\infty$ which applies in the space inhomogeneous case as well, provided that the macroscopic quantities remain bounded.
We study the exponential stability of evolutionary equations. The focus is laid on second order problems and we provide a way to rewrite them as a suitable first order evolutionary equation, for which the stability can be proved by using frequency domain methods. The problem class under consideration is broad enough to cover integro-differential equations, delay-equations and classical evolution equations within a unified framework.
In this note, we characterize the solution of a system of elliptic integro-differential equations describing a phe-notypically structured population subject to mutation, selection and migration. Generalizing an approach based on Hamilton-Jacobi equations, we identify the dominant terms of the solution when the mutation term is small (but nonzero). This method was initially used, for different problems from evolutionary biology, to identify the asymptotic solutions, while the mutations vanish, as a sum of Dirac masses. A key point is a uniqueness property related to the weak KAM theory. This me…
In this thesis we consider so-called linear evolutionary problems, a class of linear partial differential equations covering classical elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic equations from mathematical physics as well as classes of integro-differenital equations, fractional differential equations and delay equations. We address the well-posedness of the problems in a pure Hilbert space setting. Moreover, the exponential stability and the regularity of the problems are studied. In particular, a Hille-Yosida type result is proved, to obtain a strongly continuous semigroup on a suitable state space c…
We give an approach to exponential stability within the framework of evolutionary equations due to [R. Picard. A structural observation for linear material laws in classical mathematical physics. Math. Methods Appl. Sci., 32(14):1768-1803,2009]. We derive sufficient conditions for exponential stability in terms of the material law operator, which is defined via an analytic and bounded operator-valued function and give an estimate for the expected decay rate. The results are illustrated by three examples: differential-algebraic equations, partial differential equations with finite delay and par…
Weak solutions to parabolic integro-differential operators of order $α\in (α_0, 2)$ are studied. Local a priori estimates of Hölder norms and a weak Harnack inequality are proved. These results are robust with respect to $α\nearrow 2$. In this sense, the presentation is an extension of Moser's result in 1971.
We consider an integro-differential model for evolutionary game theory which describes the evolution of a population adopting mixed strategies. Using a reformulation based on the first moments of the solution, we prove some analytical properties of the model and global estimates. The asymptotic behavior and the stability of solutions in the case of two strategies is analyzed in details. Numerical schemes for two and three strategies which are able to capture the correct equilibrium states are also proposed together with several numerical examples.
The FitzHugh-Rinzel system is able to describe some biophysical phenomena, such as bursting oscillations, and the study of its solutions can help to better understand several behaviours of the complex dynamics of biological systems. We express the solutions by means of an integral equation involving the fundamental solution $ H(x,t) $ related to a non linear integro-differential equation. Properties of $ H(x,t) $ allow us to obtain a priori estimates for solutions determined in the whole space, showing both the influence of the initial data and the source term.
We survey the recent development of the DeGiorgi-Nash-Moser-Aronson type theory for a class of symmetric jump processes(or equivalently, a class of symmetric integro-differential operators). We focus on the sharp two-sided estimates for the transition density functions (or heat kernels) of the processes, a priori Holder estimate and parabolic Harnack inequalities for their parabolic functions. In contrast to the second order elliptic differential operator case, the methods to establish these properties for symmetric integro-differential operators are mainly probabilistic.
A Hamilton-Jacobi approach for the evolutionary dynamics of a model with gene transfer: characterizing monomorphic dynamics for non-concave fitness functions
In this work, we characterize the solution of a system of elliptic integro-differential equations describing a phenotypically structured population subject to mutation, selection and migration between two habitats. Assuming that the effects of the mutations are small but nonzero, we show that the population's distribution has at most two peaks and we give explicit conditions under which the population will be monomorphic (unimodal distribution) or dimorphic (bimodal distribution). More importantly, we provide a general method to determine the dominant terms of the population's distribution in …
We consider the Cauchy problem for a second-order nonlinear evolution equation in a Hilbert space. This equation represents the abstract generalization of the Ball integro-differential equation. The general nonlinear case with respect to terms of the equation which include a square of a norm of a gradient is considered. A three-layer semi-discrete scheme is proposed in order to find an approximate solution. In this scheme, the approximation of nonlinear terms that are dependent on the gradient is carried out by using an integral mean. We show that the solution of the nonlinear discrete problem…
The continuous dependence of solutions to certain (non-autonomous, partial, integro-differential-algebraic, evolutionary) equations on the coefficients is addressed. We give criteria that guarantee that convergence of the coefficients in the weak operator topology implies weak convergence of the respective solutions. We treat three examples: A homogenization problem for a Kelvin-Voigt model for elasticity, the discussion of continuous dependence of the coefficients for acoustic waves with impedance type boundary conditions and a singular perturbation problem for a mixed type equation. By means…
We discuss the issue of maximal regularity for evolutionary equations with non-autonomous coefficients. Here evolutionary equations are abstract partial-differential algebraic equations considered in Hilbert spaces. The catch is to consider time-dependent partial differential equations in an exponentially weighted Hilbert space. In passing, one establishes the time derivative as a continuously invertible, normal operator admitting a functional calculus with the Fourier--Laplace transformation providing the spectral representation. Here, the main result is then a regularity result for well-pose…
We present a technique for derivation of a priori bounds for Gevrey-Sobolev norms of space-periodic three-dimensional solutions to evolutionary partial differential equations of hydrodynamic type. It involves a transformation of the flow velocity in the Fourier space, which introduces a feedback between the index of the norm and the norm of the transformed solution, and results in emergence of a mildly dissipative term. To illustrate the technique, we derive finite-time bounds for Gevrey-Sobolev norms of solutions to the Euler and inviscid Burgers equations, and global in time bounds for the V…
We consider a rather general class of evolutionary PDEs involving dissipation (of possibly fractional order), which competes with quadratic nonlinearities on the regularity of the overall equation. This includes as prototype models, Burgers' equation, the Navier-Stokes equations, the surface quasi-geostrophic equations and the Keller-Segel model for chemotaxis. Here we establish a Petrowsky type parabolic estimate of such equations which entail a precise time decay of higher-order Sobolev norms for this class of equations. To this end, we introduce as a main new tool, an "infinite order energy…
We study the long-time behaviour of phenotype-structured models describing the evolutionary dynamics of asexual species whose phenotypic fitness landscape is characterised by multiple peaks. First we consider the case where phenotypic variations do not occur, and then we include the effect of heritable phenotypic changes. In the former case the model is formulated in terms of an integrodifferential equation for the phenotype distribution of the individuals of the species, whereas in the latter case the evolution of the phenotype distribution is governed by a non-local parabolic equation whereb…
In 1981, Foias, Guillopé and Temam proved a priori estimates for arbitrary-order space derivatives of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equation. Such bounds are instructive in the numerical investigation of intermittency often observed in simulations, e.g., numerical study of vorticity moments by Donzis et al. (2013) revealed depletion of nonlinearity that may be responsible for smoothness of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equation. We employ an original method to derive analogous estimates for space derivatives of three-dimensional space-periodic weak solutions to the evolutionary equations of …
We consider a stochastic model for the evolution of a discrete population structured by a trait with values on a finite grid of the torus, and with mutation and selection. Traits are vertically inherited unless a mutation occurs, and influence the birth and death rates. We focus on a parameter scaling where population is large, individual mutations are small but not rare, and the grid mesh for the trait values is much smaller than the size of mutation steps. When considering the evolution of the population in a long time scale, the contribution of small sub-populations may strongly influence t…
The data-driven models allow one to define the model structure in cases when a priori information is not sufficient to build other types of models. The possible way to obtain physical interpretation is the data-driven differential equation discovery techniques. The existing methods of PDE (partial derivative equations) discovery are bound with the sparse regression. However, sparse regression is restricting the resulting model form, since the terms for PDE are defined before regression. The evolutionary approach described in the article has a symbolic regression as the background instead and t…
We discuss a 3D model describing the time evolution of nematic liquid crystals in the framework of Landau-de Gennes theory, where the natural physical constraints are enforced by a singular free energy bulk potential proposed by J.M. Ball and A. Majumdar. The thermal effects are present through the component of the free energy that accounts for intermolecular interactions. The model is consistent with the general principle of thermodynamics and mathematically tractable. We identify the a priori estimates for the associated system of evolutionary partial differential equations and construct glo…
