Based on the method proposed in [ H. S. Zong, W. M. Sun, Phys. Rev. \textbf{D 78}, 054001 (2008)], we calculate the equation of state (EOS) of QCD at zero temperature and finite quark chemical potential under the hard-dense-loop (HDL) approximation. A comparison between the EOS under HDL approximation and the cold, perturbative EOS of QCD proposed by Fraga, Pisarski and Schaffner-Bielich is made. It is found that the pressure under HDL approximation is generally smaller than the perturbative result. In addition, we also calculate the quark number susceptibility (QNS) at finite temperature and finite chemical potential under hard-thermal/dense-loop (HTL/HDL) approximation and compare our results with the corresponding ones in the previous literature.
We have computed the chiral susceptibility in quark-gluon plasma in presence of finite chemical potential and weak magnetic field within hard thermal loop approximation. First we construct the massive effective quark propagator in a thermomagnetic medium. Then we obtain completely analytic expression for the chiral susceptibility in weak magnetic field approximation. In the absence of magnetic field the thermal chiral susceptibility increases in presence of finite chemical potential. The effect of thermomagnetic correction is found to be very marginal as temperature is the dominant scale in we…
The static and dynamic chiral susceptibilities in the quark-gluon plasma are calculated within the lowest order perturbative QCD at finite temperature and the Hard Thermal Loop resummation technique using an effective quark propagator. After regularisation of ultraviolet divergences, the Hard Thermal Loop results are compared to QCD lattice simulations.
The quark number susceptibility, associated with the conserved quark number density, is closely related to the baryon and charge fluctuations in the quark-gluon plasma, which might serve as signature for the quark-gluon plasma formation in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. Beside QCD lattice simulations, the quark number susceptibility has been calculated recently using a resummed perturbation theory (Hard Thermal Loop resummation). In the present work we show, based on general arguments, that the computation of this quantity neglecting Hard Thermal Loop vertices contradicts the Ward ide…
We explore a possible phase where chiral $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ symmetry is spontaneously broken while its center $Z_2$ symmetry remains unbroken and its consequence on thermal quantities. In this phase, chiral symmetry breaking is driven by a quartic quark condensate although a bilinear quark condensate vanishes. A Ginzburg-Landau free energy leads to a new tricritical point (TCP) between the $Z_2$ broken and unbroken phases. Furthermore, a critical point can appear even in the chiral limit where explicit breaking is turned off, instead of a TCP at which restoration of chiral and its center…
We calculate the quark number susceptibility in the deconfined phase of QCD using the hard thermal loop (HTL) approximation for the quark propagator. This improved perturbation theory takes into account important medium effects such as thermal quark masses and Landau damping in the quark-gluon plasma. We explicitly show that the Landau damping part in the quark propagator for spacelike quark momenta does not contribute to the quark number susceptibility due to the quark number conservation. We find that the quark number susceptibility only due to the collective quark modes deviates from that o…
We argue that coherent production of hard dijets by linearly polarized real photons can provide direct evidence for chirality violation in hard processes, the first measurement of the magnetic susceptibility of the quark condensate and the photon distribution amplitude. It can also serve as a sensitive probe of the generalized gluon parton distribution. Numerical calculations are presented for HERA kinematics.
With the aid of the vector Ward-Takahashi identity we derive a general formula for the quark number susceptibility (QNS) which expresses the QNS as an integral expression only involving the full quark propagator at finite temperature and chemical potential. The QNS at finite temperature and zero chemical potential is calculated with the dressed quark propagator in the Hard-Thermal-Loop (HTL) approximation. A comparison of our result with the results of QNS in HTL approximation in previous literatures is given.
We study the quark number susceptibility, an indicator of QCD phase transition, in the hard wall and soft wall models of hQCD. We find that the susceptibilities in both models are the same, jumping up at the deconfinement phase transition temperature. We also find that the diffusion constant in the soft wall model is enhanced compared to the one in the hard wall model.
We show a phase diagram of a two-flavored parity doublet model on top of the nuclear matter ground state within the mean field approximation. An exotic phase with unbroken center symmetry of chiral group is also discussed. When crossing this phase boundary the baryon number susceptibility exhibits a characteristic feature.
We use a recently obtained resummed quark propagator at finite temperature which takes into account both the chromoelectric scale gT and the chromomagnetic scale g^2T through the Gribov action. The electric scale generates two massive modes whereas the magnetic scale produces a new massless spacelike mode in the medium. Moreover, the non-perturbative quark propagator is found to contain no discontinuity in contrast to the standard perturbative hard thermal loop approach. Using this non-perturbative quark propagator and self-consistent vertices, we compute the non-perturbative dilepton rate at …
Considering the strong field approximation we compute the hard thermal loop pressure at finite temperature and chemical potential of hot and dense deconfined QCD matter in lowest Landau level in one-loop order. We consider the anisotropic pressure in the presence of the strong magnetic field i.e., longitudinal and transverse pressure along parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field direction. As a first effort, we compute and discuss the anisotropic quark number susceptibility of deconfined QCD matter in lowest Landau level. The longitudinal quark number susceptibility is found to increa…
A non-perturbative (np) method of Field Correlators (FCM) was applied to study QCD at temperatures above the deconfinement transition ($1<T/T_c<3,~T_c\sim0.16~GeV$) and nonzero baryon densities (baryon chemical potential $μ_B<0.5~GeV$) in an external uniform magnetic field ($eB<0.5~GeV^2$). Within FCM, the np high-temperature dynamics is embodied in the Polyakov loop and in the Debye mass due to the Color-Magnetic Confinement. Analytic expressions for quark pressure and magnetic susceptibility were obtained. The expressions were represented as series and in integral form. Magnetic susceptibili…
A new phase of dense QCD proposed in the limit of large number of colors, Quarkyonic Phase, is discussed in chiral approaches. The interplay between chiral symmetry breaking and confinement together with the $N_c$ dependence of the phase diagram are dealt with in the PNJL model. We also discuss a possible phase at finite density where chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken while its center remains unbroken. The quark number susceptibility exhibits a strong enhancement at the restoration point of the center symmetry rather than that of the chiral symmetry. This is reminiscent of the quarkyonic…
An extension to the Soft-Collinear-Effective Theory (SCET) description of hard jets is motivated to include the leading contributions between the propagating partons within the jet with partons radiated from a dense extended medium. The resulting effective Lagrangian, containing both a leading and a power suppressed (in the hard scale $Q^2$) contribution, arises primarily from interactions between the hard collinear modes in the jet with Glauber modes from the medium. In this first attempt, the interactions between the hard jet and soft and collinear partonic modes have been ignored, in an eff…
A general effective action for quark matter at nonzero temperature and/or nonzero density is derived. Irrelevant quark modes are distinguished from relevant quark modes, and hard from soft gluon modes, by introducing two separate cut-offs in momentum space, one for quarks, $Λ_q$, and one for gluons, $Λ_g$. Irrelevant quark modes and hard gluon modes are then exactly integrated out in the functional integral representation of the QCD partition function. Depending on the specific choice for $Λ_q$ and $Λ_g$, the resulting effective action contains well-known effective actions for hot and/or dense…
We discuss the holographic derivation of the magnetic susceptibility of the quark condensate. It is found that the susceptibility emerges upon the account of the Chern-Simons term in the holographic action. We demonstrate that Vainshtein's relation is not exact in the hard wall dual model but is fulfilled with high accuracy. Some comments concerning the spectral density of the Dirac operator are presented.
The notion that hadron masses scale according to the scaling of the quark condensate in hadronic matter, partly supported by a number of observations in finite nuclei, can be interpreted in terms of Harada-Yamawaki's ``vector manifestation" (VM) of chiral symmetry. In this scenario, near chiral restoration, the vector meson masses drop to zero {\it in the chiral limit} with vanishing widths. This scenario appears to differ from the standard linear sigma model scenario. We exploit a link between the VM and color-flavor locking inferred by us from lattice data on quark number susceptibility (QNS…
We calculate the dimensionless Fermi liquid parameters (FLPs), $F_{0,1}^{sym}$ and $F_{0,1}^{asym}$, for spin asymmetric dense quark matter. In general, the FLPs are infrared divergent due to the exchange of massless gluons. To remove such divergences, the Hard Density Loop (HDL) corrected gluon propagator is used. The FLPs so determined are then invoked to calculate magnetic properties such as magnetization $\langle M\rangle$ and magnetic susceptibility $χ_M$ of spin polarized quark matter. Finally, we investigate the possibility of magnetic instability by studying the density dependence of $…
In this work, we compute the hard thermal loop pressure of quark-gluon plasma within strong magnetic field approximation at one-loop order. Magnetic field breaks the rotational symmetry of the system. As a result, the pressure of QGP becomes anisotropic and one finds two different pressures along the longitudinal (along the magnetic field direction) and transverse direction. Similarly, the second-order quark number susceptibility, which represents the fluctuation of the net quark number density, also becomes anisotropic. We compute the second order QNS of deconfined QCD matter in strong field …
The effect of multiple scatterings on the propagation of hard partonic jets in a dense nuclear medium is studied in the framework of deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) off a large nucleus. Power counting arguments based on the Glauber improved Soft-Collinear-Effective-Theory are used to identify the class of leading power corrections to the process of a single parton traversing the extended medium without emission. It turns out that the effect of longitudinal drag and diffusion (often referred to as straggling) is as important as transverse scattering, when relying solely on power counting argume…
Angular structure of radiative and collisional energy losses of a hard parton jet propagating through dense QCD-matter is investigated. For small angular jet cone sizes, $θ_0 < 5^0$, the radiative energy loss is shown to dominate over the collisional energy loss due to final state elastic rescattering of the hard projectile on thermal particles in the medium. Due to coherent effects, the radiative energy loss decreases with increasing the angular size the jet. It becomes comparable with the collisional energy loss for $θ_0 > 5^0-10^0$.
Direct probes for the QGP must be hard enough to resolve sub-hadronic scales ($\ll \la^{-1}$) and distinguish confined and deconfined media. This can be achieved by fast colour charges (jets) and heavy quark resonances (quarkonia). After a general survey, we study quarkonia as confinement probe and show in particular that confined matter is transparent, deconfined matter opaque to \J's.
We investigate magnetic field $(eB)$ dependence of constituent quark mass, the longitudinal and transverse pressure as well as the magnetization and magnetic susceptibility of strongly interacting quark matter. We employ the two-flavour Polyakov Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with the inclusion of the anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) of the quarks at finite temperature $(T)$ and finite quark chemical potential $(μ_q)$ capturing different stages of chiral phase transition. We find that the transverse pressure, magnetization and magnetic susceptibility become highly oscillatory for large values of $eB…
In the study of the quark-gluon plasma in high-energy heavy-ion collisions, hard and electromagnetic (EM) processes play an essential role as probes of the properties of the dense medium. They can be used to study a wide range of properties of the dense medium in high-energy heavy-ion collisions, from space-time profiles of the dense matter, bulk transport coefficients to EM responses and the jet transport parameter. I review in this talk these medium properties, how they can be studied through hard and EM probes and the status of recent theoretical and phenomenological investigations.
We compute corrections to the hard thermal (or dense) loop photon polarization tensor associated to a small mass $m$ of the fermions of an electromagnetic plasma at high temperature $T$ (or chemical potential $μ$). To this aim we use the on-shell effective field theory, amended with mass corrections. We also carry out the computation using transport theory, reaching to the same result. Interemediate steps in the computations reveal the presence of potential infrared divergencies. We use dimensional regularization, as it is respectful with the gauge symmetry, and then show that all infrared div…
We develop a consistent technique for the calculation of real photon emission in hard exclusive processes, which is based on the background field formalism and allows a convenient separation of hard electromagnetic and soft hadronic components of the photon. The latter ones are related to matrix-elements of light-cone operators in the electromagnetic background field and can be parametrized in terms of photon distribution amplitudes. We construct a complete set of photon distribution amplitudes up to and including twist-4, for both chirality-conserving and chirality-violating operators. The di…

We study the medium-induced gluon emission from a hard quark jet traversing the dense nuclear matter within the framework of deep inelastic scattering off a large nucleus. We extend the previous work and compute the single gluon emission spectrum including both transverse and longitudinal momentum exchanges between the hard jet parton and the medium constituents. On the other hand, with only transverse scattering and using static scattering centers for the traversed medium, our induced gluon emission spectrum in the soft gluon limit reduces to the Gyulassy-Levai-Vitev one-rescattering-one-emis…

We develop a discrete lattice implementation of the hard thermal loop effective action by the method of added auxiliary fields. We use the resulting model to measure the sphaleron rate (topological susceptibility) of Yang-Mills theory at weak coupling. Our results give parametric behavior in accord with the arguments of Arnold, Son, and Yaffe, and are in quantitative agreement with the results of Moore, Hu, and Muller.
We study a self-bound dense object in the hard wall model. We consider a spherically symmetric dense object which is characterized by its radial density distribution and non-uniform but spherically symmetric chiral condensate. For this we analytically solve the partial differential equations in the hard wall model and read off the radial coordinate dependence of the density and chiral condensate according to the AdS/CFT correspondence. We then attempt to describe nucleon density profiles of a few nuclei within our framework and observe that the confinement scale changes from a free nucleon to …
Classical transport theory is used to study the response of a non-Abelian plasma at zero temperature and high chemical potential to weak color electromagnetic fields. In this article the parallelism between the transport phenomena occurring in a non-Abelian plasma at high temperature and high density is stressed. Particularly, it is shown that at high densities it is also possible to relate the transport equations to the zero-curvature condition of a Chern-Simons theory in three dimensions, even when quarks are not considered ultrarelativistic. The induced color current in the cold plasma can …
We study in a framework of QCD collinear factorization the processes of a pion and a photon diffraction dissociation into two jets. The structure of non-factorizable contributions is discussed. We argue that coherent production of hard dijets by linearly polarized real photons can provide direct evidence for chirality violation in hard processes, the first measurement of the magnetic susceptibility of the quark condensate and the photon distribution amplitude.
