We construct the full set of boundary giant magnons on $\mathbb{R}\times S^{2}$ attached to the maximal $Z=0$ giant graviton by mapping from the general solution to static sine-Gordon theory on the interval and compute the values of $Δ-J$ at finite $J$, including the leading order corrections when $J$ is large. We then consider the Born-Infeld theory of the giant graviton itself to construct BIon spike solutions that correspond to the world volume description of the boundary giant magnons at finite $J$.
We produce the open strings on $\mathbb{R}\times S^{2}$ that correspond to the solutions of integrable boundary sine-Gordon theory by making use of the $N$-magnon solutions provided in \cite{KPV} together with explicit moduli. Relating the two boundary parameters in a special way we describe the scattering of giant magnons with non-maximal $Y=0$ giant gravitons and calculate the leading contribution to the associated magnon scattering phase.
We study classical solutions to the Nambu-Goto string on $AdS_2 \times S^1$ and $AdS_3 \times S^1$ corresponding to strings stretched between wrapped branes extending in $AdS$. The solutions are obtained by analytic continuation of giant magnon solutions, cut at the position of the branes. These solutions carry one or two $SO(2,4)$ charges and a single $SO(6)$ charge. We compute their energies and show their relation to $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS geometries. Their relevance to the $SL(2)$ sector of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM is also discussed.
We study spin chains with boundaries that are dual to open strings suspended between systems of giant gravitons and dual giant gravitons. The anomalous dimensions computed in the gauge theory are in complete quantitative agreement with energies computed in the dual string theory. The comparison makes use of a description in terms of magnons, generalizing results for a single maximal giant graviton. The symmetries of the problem determine the structure of the magnon boundary reflection/scattering matrix up to a phase. We compute a reflection/scattering matrix element at weak coupling and verify…
We compute the force and torque between well-separated, slowly-moving Giant Magnons with arbitrary orientations on S^5. We propose an effective Hamiltonian for Giant Magnons in this regime.
In this note we present several ideas toward the solution to the giant graviton puzzle - the apparent multiplicity of supergravity states dual to field theory chiral primary operators. We use the fact that, for certain ranges of the angular momentum, giant gravitons can be mapped into vacua of a dual theory to argue that the sphere and $AdS$ giant gravitons have very different boundary descriptions, and that an unpolarized KK graviton is unphysical in the regime where giant gravitons exist. We also show that a generic boundary state can correspond to different giant graviton configurations, wh…
The thermal instability of the giant graviton is investigated within the BMN matrix model. We calculate the one-loop thermal correction of the quantum fluctuation around the trivial vacuum and giant graviton respectively. From the exact formula of the free energy we see that at low temperature the giant graviton is unstable and will dissolve into vacuum fluctuation. However, at sufficient high temperature the trivial vacuum fluctuation will condense to form the giant graviton configuration. The transition temperature of the giant graviton is determined in our calculation.
We investigate dyonic giant magnons propagating on $γ$-deformed $AdS_5\times S^5$ by Neumann-Rosochatius reduction method with a twisted boundary condition. We compute finite-size effect of the dispersion relations of dyonic giant magnons which generalizes the previously known case of the giant magnons with one angular momentum found by Bykov and Frolov.
Magnon interactions give important contributions to the wrapping interactions of the N=4 spin-chain. Similar effects are expected for the finite size corrections to the giant magnon energy in AdS_5 x S^5. In this paper I review the finite gap description of giant magnons and the leading order calculation of the finite size corrections to the giant magnon dispersion relation for multi-magnon states.
In the string theory in AdS_4 \times CP^3 we construct the giant magnon and spike solutions with two spins in two kinds of subspaces of R_t \times CP^3 and derive the dispersion relations for them. For the single giant magnon solution in one subspace we show that its dispersion relation is associated with that of the big one-spin giant magnon solution in the RP^2 subspace. For the single giant magnon solution in the other complementary subspace its dispersion relation is similar to that of the one-spin giant magnon solution living in the S^2 subspace but has one additional spin dependence.
We construct and study new giant graviton configurations in the framework of the non-supersymmetric Schrodinger holography. We confirm in the original Schrodinger spacetime, the picture discovered previously in the pp-wave limit of the geometry, namely that it is the giant graviton that becomes the energetically favored stable configuration compared to the point graviton one. Furthermore, there is a critical value of the deformation above which the point graviton disappears from the spectrum. The former fact leads also to the possibility of tunnelling from the point graviton to the giant gravi…
In this article, the free field theory limit of operators dual to giant gravitons with open strings attached are studied. We introduce a graphical notation, which employs Young diagrams, for these operators. The computation of two point correlation functions is reduced to the application of three simple rules, written as graphical operations performed on the Young diagram labels of the operators. Using this technology, we have studied gravitational radiation by giant gravitons and bound states of giant gravitons, transitions between excited giant graviton states and joining of open strings att…
Working within the AdS/CFT correspondence we calculate the three-point function of two giant gravitons and one pointlike graviton using methods of semiclassical string theory and considering both the case where the giant gravitons wrap an S^3 in S^5 and the case where the giant gravitons wrap an S^3 in AdS_5. We likewise calculate the correlation function in N=4 SYM using two Schur polynomials and a single trace chiral primary. We find that the gauge and string theory results have structural similarities but do not match perfectly, and interpret this in terms of the Schur polynomials' inabilit…
We study the giant magnon solutions in the near horizon geometry of the Neveu-Schwarz (NS) 5-brane background. In conformal gauge, we find magnon dispersion relation in the large angular momentum (J) limit. We further show that the giant magnon poses uniform distribution of the angular momentum along the string world-sheet as in case of AdS_5\times S^5 spacetime.
We find the exact solution for a finite size Giant Magnon in the $SU(2)\times SU(2)$ sector of the string dual of the $\mathcal{N}=6$ superconformal Chern-Simons theory recently constructed by Aharony, Bergman, Jafferis and Maldacena. The finite size Giant Magnon solution consists of two magnons, one in each $SU(2)$. In the infinite size limit this solution corresponds to the Giant Magnon solution of arXiv:0806.4959. The magnon dispersion relation exhibits finite-size exponential corrections with respect to the infinite size limit solution.
In this article we continue with the microscopical investigation of giant graviton configurations in AdS_m x S^n spacetimes, initiated in hep-th/0207199. Using dualities and a Matrix theory derivation we propose an action that describes multiple Type IIB gravitons. This action contains multipole moment couplings to the Type IIB background potentials. Using these couplings, we study, from the microscopical point of view, the giant graviton and dual giant graviton configurations in the AdS_5 x S^5 background. In both cases the gravitons expand into a non-commutative 3-sphere, that is defined as …
We prove that in the presence of a maximal giant graviton state in N=4 SYM, the states dual to open strings attached to the giant graviton give rise to an PSU(2,2|4) open spin chain model with integrable boundary conditions in the SO(6) sector of the spin chain to one loop order.
We construct a new giant graviton solution on the recently constructed pp-wave geometry of the non-supersymmetric Schrodinger background. That solution exhibits an intriguing behavior as the deformation parameter of the spacetime varies. Firstly, the degeneracy between the giant and the point graviton is lifted for the benefit of the giant graviton as soon as the deformation is turned on. Secondly, when the deformation parameter exceeds a critical value the barrier separating the point from the giant graviton disappears. This suggests that the mere presence of a D3-brane leads to the spontaneo…
Using finite gap methods, we find the leading order finite size corrections for an arbitrary number of giant magnons on physical strings, where the sum of the momenta is a multiple of 2π. Our results are valid for the Hofman-Maldacena fundamental giant magnons as well as their dyonic generalizations. The energy corrections turn out to be surprisingly simple, especially if all the magnons are fundamental, and at leading order are independent of the magnon flavors. We also show how to use the Bethe ansatz to find finite size corrections for dyonic giant magnons with large R-charges.
The quantization of the giant magnon away from the infinite size limit is discussed. We argue that this quantization inevitably leads to string theory on a Z_M-orbifold of S^5. This is shown explicitly and examined in detail in the near plane-wave limit.
We consider giant gravitons on the maximally supersymmetric plane-wave background of type IIB string theory. Fixing the light-cone gauge, we work out the low energy effective light-cone Hamiltonian of the three-sphere giant graviton. At first order, this is a U(1) gauge theory on R x S^3. We place sources in this effective gauge theory. Although non-vanishing net electric charge configurations are disallowed by Gauss' law, electric dipoles can be formed. From the string theory point of view these dipoles can be understood as open strings piercing the three-sphere, generalizing the usual BIons …
We study the worldsheet S-matrix of a string attached to a D-brane in AdS$_5\times$S$^5$. The D-brane is either a giant graviton or a dual giant graviton. In the gauge theory, the operators we consider belong to the $su(2|3)$ sector of the theory. Magnon excitations of open strings can exhibit both elastic (when magnons in the bulk of the string scatter) and inelastic (when magnons at the endpoint of an open string participate) scattering. Both of these $S$-matrices are determined (up to an overall phase) by the $su(2|2)^2$ global symmetry of the theory. In this note we study the $S$-matrix fo…
We examine the giant graviton expansions of the Coulomb and Higgs indices for the M2-brane SCFTs to find the closed-form expressions for the indices that encode the spectra of the $1/4$-BPS M5-brane giant gravitons and the $1/3$-BPS orbifold M5-brane giant gravitons. Consequently, we get exact forms of the twisted indices for the 6d $(2,0)$ theories describing a stack of $N$ M5-branes which generalize the unrefined indices. We confirm that they are also beautifully expanded with respect to the indices for the M2-brane giant gravitons which are obtained from the Coulomb and Higgs indices for th…
This is a talk delivered at the Workshop on Quantum Fields and Strings of the 2014 Corfu Summer Institute. We discuss how giant magnons emerge in the context of the AdS5/CFT4 correspondence as the gravity duals of N = 4 super Yang-Mills magnon excitations. Then we present a new analytic expression for the dispersion relation of classical finite-size giant magnons with Lambert's W-function.
We examine giant gravitons with a worldvolume magnetic flux $q$ in type IIA pp-wave background and find that they can move away from the origin along $x^4$ direction in target space satisfying $Rx^4=-q$. This nontrivial relation can be regarded as a complementary relation of the giant graviton on IIA pp-wave and is shown to be connected to the spacetime uncertainty principle. The giant graviton is also investigated in a system of N D0-branes as a fuzzy sphere solution. It is observed that $x^4$ enters into the fuzzy algebra as a deformation parameter. Such a background dependent Myers effect g…
The rotating D3-brane in the $AdS_5 \times S^5$ spacetime could be blowed up to the spherical BPS configuration which has the same energy and quantum number of the point-like graviton and is called as a giant graviton. The configuration is stable only if its angular momentum was less than a critical value of $P_c$. In this paper we investigate the properties of the giant graviton in the electric/magnetic Melvin geometries of deformed $AdS_5 \times S^5$ spacetime which was obtained in our previous paper (hep-th/0512117, Phys. Rev. D73 (2006) 026007). We find that in the magnetic Melvin spacetim…
In our previous work (Phys. Rev. D63, 085010, hep-th/0011290), we showed that the brane universe on the giant graviton moving in the near-horizon background of the dilatonic D(6-p)-brane is described by the mirage cosmology. We study thermodynamic properties of the moving giant graviton by applying thermodynamics of cosmology and the recently proposed holographic principles of cosmology. We find that the Fischler-Susskind holographic bound is satisfied by the closed brane universe on the moving giant graviton with p>3. The Bekenstein and the Hubble entropy bounds and the recently proposed Verl…
Giant gravitons are described microscopically in terms of dielectric gravitational waves expanding into fuzzy manifolds. We review these constructions in AdS_m \times S^n spacetimes, discussing the different fuzzy manifolds that appear in each case.
This paper studies giant magnons in AdS_4 x CP^3 using both the string sigma-model and the algebraic curve. We complete the dictionary of solutions by finding the dyonic generalisation of the CP^1 string solution, which matches the `small' giant magnon in the algebraic curve, and by pointing out that the solution recently constructed by the dressing method is the `big' giant magnon. We then use the curve to compute finite-J corrections to all cases, which for the non-dyonic cases always match the AFZ result. For the dyonic RP^3 magnon we recover the S^5 answer, but for the `small' and `big' gi…
The giant magnons are classical solitons of the O(N) sigma-model, which play an important role in the AdS/CFT correspondence. We study quantum giant magnons first at large N and then exactly using Bethe Ansatz, where giant magnons can be interpreted as holes in the Fermi sea. We also identify a solvable limit of Bethe Ansatz in which it describes a weakly-interacting Bose gas at zero temperature. The examples include the O(N) model at large N, weakly interacting non-linear Schrodinger model, and nearly isotropic XXZ spin chain in the magnetic field.
We find a simple parametrization of the anti-symmetric giant graviton in AdS_4 x CP^3, first constructed in arXiv:1108.3084 [hep-th], dual to the anti-symmetric Schur polynomial involving two bi-fundamental complex scalar fields of ABJM theory. Using this parametrization we evaluate in a semi-classical approach the three-point function of two such giant gravitons and one point-like graviton considering both extremal and non-extremal configurations. We likewise discuss the case of the symmetric giant graviton in AdS_4 x CP^3. Finally, we provide an expression for the planar three-point function…
The analogues of giant magnon configurations are studied on the string world sheet in the lambda background. This is a discrete deformation of the AdS(5)xS(5) background that preserves the integrability of the world sheet theory. Giant magnon solutions are generated using the dressing method and their dispersion relation is found. This reduces to the usual dyonic giant magnon dispersion relation in the appropriate limit and becomes relativistic in another limit where the lambda model becomes the generalized sine-Gordon theory of the Pohlmeyer reduction. The scattering of giant magnons is then …
We study classical solutions in Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase (BMN) matrix model. A supersymmetric (1/2 BPS) fuzzy sphere is one of the classical solutions and corresponds to a giant graviton. We also consider other classical solutions, such as non-supersymmetric fuzzy sphere and harmonic oscillating gravitons. Some properties of oscillating gravitons are discussed. In particular, oscillating gravitons turn into usual supergravitons in the limit mu -> 0. Moreover, we calculate the one-loop effective action around the supersymmetric fuzzy sphere by the use of the background field method and show…
We obtain the giant magnon of Hofman-Maldacena and its dyonic generalisation on R x S^3 < AdS_5 x S^5 from the general elliptic finite-gap solution by degenerating its elliptic spectral curve into a singular curve. This alternate description of giant magnons as finite-gap solutions associated to singular curves is related through a symplectic transformation to their already established description in terms of condensate cuts developed in hep-th/0606145.
We argue that the giant graviton configurations known from the literature have a complementary, microscopical description in terms of multiple gravitational waves undergoing a dielectric (or magnetic moment) effect. We present a non-Abelian effective action for these gravitational waves with dielectric couplings and show that stable dielectric solutions exist. These solutions agree in the large $N$ limit with the giant graviton configurations in the literature.
We present the Penrose limits of a complex marginal deformation of $AdS_5\times S^5$, which incorporates the $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ symmetry of type IIB theory, along the $(J,0,0)$ geodesic and along the $(J,J,J)$ geodesic. We discuss giant gravitons on the deformed $(J,0,0)$ pp-wave background.
We consider strings moving in the R_t x S^3_ηsubspace of the η-deformed AdS_5 x S^5 and obtain a class of solutions depending on several parameters. They are characterized by the string energy and two angular momenta. Finite-size dyonic giant magnon belongs to this class of solutions. Further on, we restrict ourselves to the case of giant magnon with one nonzero angular momentum, and obtain the leading finite-size correction to the dispersion relation.
We consider the perturbation of giant gravitons in the background of dilatonic D-branes whose geometry is not of a conventional form of ${\rm AdS}_m \times {\rm S}^n$. We use the quadratic approximation to the brane action to investigate their vibrations around the equilibrium configuration. We found the normal modes of small vibrations of giant gravitons and these vibrations are turned out to be stable.
We construct a non-Abelian world volume effective action for a system of multiple M-theory gravitons. This action contains multipole moment couplings to the eleven-dimensional background potentials. We use these couplings to study, from the microscopical point of view, giant graviton configurations where the gravitons expand into an M2-brane, with the topology of a fuzzy 2-sphere, that lives in the spherical part of the AdS_7 x S^4 background or in the AdS part of AdS_4 x S^7. When the number of gravitons is large we find perfect agreement with the Abelian, macroscopical description of giant g…
Using the type II near-extremal 3D-branes solution we apply the T-duality and smeared twist to construct the supergravity backgrounds which dual to the 4D finite temperature non-commutative dipole field theories. We first consider the zero-temperature system in which, depending on the property of dipole vectors it may be N=2, N=1 or N=0 theory. We investigate the rotating D3-brane configurations moving on the spactimes and show that, for the cases of N=2 and N =1 the rotating D3-brane could be blowed up to the stable spherical configuration which is called as giant graviton and has a less ener…
We investigate finite-size giant magnons propagating on γ-deformed AdS_4 x CP^3_γ type IIA string theory background, dual to one parameter deformation of the N=6 super Chern-Simoms-matter theory. Analyzing the finite-size effect on the dispersion relation, we find that it is modified compared to the undeformed case, acquiring γdependence.
We studied the finite-size giant magnons in $\text{AdS}_4\times\text{CP}^3_β$ background using the classical spectral curve constructed in this paper. We computed the finite-size corrections to the dispersion relations for the $RP^3$ giant magnons using our twisted algebraic curve based on the method proposed in arXiv:0810.1246, in which the authors computed the finite-size corrections of giant magnons in $\text{AdS}_4\times\text{CP}^3$ by introducing a finite-size resolvent $G_{\text{finite}}(x)$. We obtained exactly the same result as in arXiv:1106.3686, where a totally different approach wa…
We use S-duality and planarity to propose an argument for the non-renormalization of the dispersion relation of giant magnon solutions in type IIB string theory on AdS_5 x S^5. We compute the spectrum of giant magnons for (p,q)-strings from field theory at strong coupling by using the central charge properties of electrically and magnetically charged supersymmetric states in the Coulomb branch of N=4 super Yang-Mills. We argue that the coupling dependence of the giant magnon dispersion relation conjectured in the literature using integrability assumptions is in fact the only functional depende…
We apply the dressing method to construct new classical string solutions describing various scattering and bound states of magnons. These solutions carry one, two or three SO(6) charges and correspond to multi-soliton configurations in the generalized sine-Gordon models.
We use the algebraic curve and Luscher's mu-term to calculate the leading order finite size corrections to the dispersion relation of giant magnons in the SU(2) x SU(2) sector of AdS_4 x CP^3. We consider a single magnon as well as one magnon in each SU(2). In addition the algebraic curve computation is generalized to give the leading order correction for an arbitrary multi-magnon state in the SU(2) x SU(2) sector.
We investigate contributions of giant gravitons to the superconformal index. We concentrate on coincident giant gravitons wrapped around a single cycle, and each contribution is obtained by a certain variable change for fugacities from the index of the worldvolume theory on the giant gravitons. Because we treat the index as a series of fugacities and the variable change relates different convergence regions, we need an analytic continuation before summing up such contributions. We propose a systematic prescription for the continuation. Although our argument is based on some unproved assumption…
A new approach to the computation of correlation functions involving two determinant operators as well as one non-protected single trace operator has recently been developed by Jiang, Komatsu and Vescovi. This correlation function provides the holographic description of the absorption of a closed string by a giant graviton. The analysis has a natural interpretation in the framework of group representation theory, which admits a generalization to general Schur polynomials and restricted Schur polynomials. This generalizes the holographic description to any giant or dual giant gravitons which ca…
We introduce a class of supersymmetric cycles in spacetimes of the form AdS times a sphere or $T^{1,1}$ which can be considered as generalizations of the giant gravitons. Branes wrapped on these cycles preserve $1\over 2$, $1\over 4$ or $1\over 8$ of the supersymmetry. On the CFT side these configurations correspond to superpositions of the large number of BPS states.
We study the stability of the giant gravitons in the string theory background with NSNS B field. We consider the perturbation of giant gravitons formed by a probe D$(8-p)$ brane in the background generated by D$(p-2)$-D$(p)$ branes for $2 \le p \le 5$. We use the quadratic approximation to the brane action to find the equations of motion. For $p=5$, giant graviton configurations are stable independent of the size of the brane. For $p \ne 5$, we calculated the range of the size of the brane where they are stable. We also present the mode frequencies explicitly for some special cases.
From the Polyakov string action using a conformal gauge we construct a three-spin giant magnon solution describing a long open string in AdS_5 \times S^5 which rotates both in two angular directions of S^5 and in one angular direction of AdS_5. Through the Virasoro constraints the string motion in AdS_5 takes an effect from the string configuration in S^5. The dispersion relation of the soliton solution is obtained as a superposition of two bound states of magnons. We show that there is a correspondence between a special giant magnon in AdS_2 and the sinh-Gordon soliton.
We extend our earlier work by demonstrating how to construct classical string solutions describing arbitrary superpositions of scattering and bound states of dyonic giant magnons on S^5 using the dressing method for the SU(4)/Sp(2) coset model. We present a particular scattering solution which generalizes solutions found in hep-th/0607009 and hep-th/0607044 to the case of arbitrary magnon momenta. We compute the classical time delay for the scattering of two dyonic magnons carrying angular momenta with arbitrary relative orientation on the S^5.
We study the one-loop anomalous dimensions of the Super Yang-Mills dual operators to open strings ending on AdS giant gravitons. AdS giant gravitons have no upper bound for their angular momentum and we represent them by the contraction of scalar fields, carrying the appropriate R-charge, with a totally symmetric tensor. We represent the open string motion along AdS directions by appending to the giant graviton operator a product of fields including covariant derivatives. We derive a bosonic lattice Hamiltonian that describes the mixing of these excited AdS giants operators under the action of…
We study AdS$_5$ black holes from a recently suggested giant graviton expansion formula for the index of $U(N)$ maximal super-Yang-Mills theory. We compute the large $N$ entropy at fixed charges and giant graviton numbers $n_I$ by a saddle point analysis, and further maximize it in $n_I$. This agrees with the dual black hole entropy in the small black hole limit. To get black holes at general sizes, one should note that various giant graviton indices cancel because gauge theory does not suffer from a Hagedorn-like pathology by an infinite baryonic tower. With one assumption on the mechanism of…
We examine a family of BPS solutions of ten-dimensional type IIb supergravity. These solutions asymptotically approach AdS_5 X S^5 and carry internal `angular' momentum on the five-sphere. While a naked singularity appears at the center of the anti-de Sitter space, we show that it has a natural physical interpretation in terms of a collection of giant gravitons. We calculate the distribution of giant gravitons from the dipole field induced in the Ramond-Ramond five-form, and show that these sources account for the entire internal momentum carried by the BPS solutions.
We extend the Zamolodchikov-Faddeev algebra for the superstring sigma model on $AdS_{5}\times S^{5}$, which was formulated by Arutyunov, Frolov and Zamaklar, to the case of open strings attached to maximal giant gravitons, which was recently considered by Hofman and Maldacena. We obtain boundary $S$-matrices which satisfy the standard boundary Yang-Baxter equation.
We consider the plane wave limit of the nonspherical giant gravitons. We compute the Poisson brackets of the coordinate functions and find a nonlinear algebra. We show that this algebra solves the supersymmetry conditions of the matrix model. This is the generalization of the algebraic realization of the spherical membrane as the ``fuzzy sphere''. We describe finite dimensional representations of the algebra corresponding to the fuzzy torus.
We obtain explicit formulas for the eight bosonic and eight fermionic fluctuations around the mixed-flux generalization of the Hofman-Maldacena giant magnon on AdS$_3 \times$S$^3 \times$T$^4$ and AdS$_3 \times$S$^3 \times$S$^3 \times$S$^1$. As a check of our results, we confirm that the semiclassical quantization of these fluctuations leads to a vanishing one-loop correction to the magnon energy, as expected from symmetry based arguments.
