We propose a plasmon-based reconfigurable antenna to controllably distribute emission from single quantum emitters in spatially separated channels. Our calculations show that crossed particle arrays can split the stream of photons from a single emitter into multiple narrow beams. We predict that beams can be switched on and off by switching host refractive index. The design method is based on engineering the dispersion relations of plasmon chains and is generally applicable to traveling wave antennas. Controllable photon delivery has potential applications in classical and quantum communication.
The concept and analysis of a Terahertz (THz) frequency-reconfigurable antenna using graphene are presented. The antenna exploits dipole-like plasmonic resonances that can be frequency-tuned on large range via the electric field effect in a graphene stack. In addition to efficient dynamic control, the proposed approach allows high miniaturization and good direct matching with continuous wave THz sources. A qualitative model is used to explain the excellent impedance stability under reconfiguration. These initial results are very promising for future all-graphene THz transceivers and sensors. K…
Controlling the directionality of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) has been widely studied, while the direction of SPPs was always switched by orthogonal polarizations in the reported methods. Here, we present a scheme to control the directionality of SPPs by arbitrary spin polarizations. Extremely, the device can split two quite adjacent polarization components to two opposite directions. The versatility of the presented design scheme can offer opportunities for polarization sensing, polarization splitting and polarization-controlled plasmonic devices.
Guided-wave plasmonic circuits are promising platforms for sensing, interconnection, and quantum applications in the sub-diffraction regime. Nonetheless, the loss-confinement trade-off remains a collective bottleneck for plasmonic-enhanced optical processes. Here, we report a unique plasmonic waveguide that can alleviate such trade-off and improve the efficiencies of plasmonic-based emission, light-matter-interaction, and detection simultaneously. Through different bias configurations, record experimental attributes such as normalized Purcell factor approaching 10^4, 10-dB amplitude modulation…
Surface plasmon polariton (SPP) as a bounded mode on a metal/dielectric interface intrinsically has a definite transverse magnetic (TM) polarization that usually lacks further manipulations. However, the in-plane longitudinal components of SPP field can produce versatile polarization states when two orthogonal propagating SPP interfere with each other. Here, we demonstrated a plasmonic polarization router by designing appropriate nanohole arrays that can selectively scatter the interfered SPP fields to desired light beams. It is well proved that our device is able to reconfigure a certain inpu…
For the purpose of using plasmonics in an integrated scheme where single emitters can be probed efficiently, we experimentally and theoretically study the scattering properties of single nano-rod gold antennas as well as antenna arrays placed on one-dimensional dielectric silicon nitride waveguides. Using real space and Fourier microscopy correlated with waveguide transmission measurements, we quantify the spectral properties, absolute strength and directivity of scattering. The scattering processes can be well understood in the framework of the physics of dipolar objects placed on a planar la…
We study experimentally and theoretically the temperature dependence of transverse magnetic routing of light emission from hybrid plasmonic-semiconductor quantum well structures where the exciton emission from the quantum well is routed into surface plasmon polaritons propagating along a nearby semiconductor-metal interface. In II-VI and III-V direct band semiconductors the magnitude of routing is governed by the circular polarization of exciton optical transitions, that is induced by a magnetic field. For structures comprising a (Cd,Mn)Te/(Cd,Mg)Te diluted magnetic semiconductor quantum well …
An analytical circuit model able to predict the input impedance of reconfigurable graphene plasmonic dipoles is presented. A suitable definition of plasmonic characteristic impedance, employing natural currents, is used to for consistent modeling of the antenna-load connection in the circuit. In its purely analytical form, the model shows good agreement with full-wave simulations, and explains the remarkable tuning properties of graphene antennas. Furthermore, using a single full-wave simulation and scaling laws, additional parasitic elements can be determined for a vast parametric space, lead…
We experimentally show how a single Ag nanoparticle (NP) coupled to an Ag nanowire (NW) can convert propagating surface plasmon polaritons to directional photons. By employing dual-excitation Fourier microscopy with spatially filtered collection-optics, we show single- and dual-directional out-coupling of light from NW-NP junction for plasmons excited through glass-substrate and air-superstrate. Furthermore, we show NW-NP junction can influence the directionality of molecular-fluorescence emission, thus functioning as an optical antenna. The results discussed herein may have implications in re…
Controlling directionality of emission, scattering and waveguiding is an important requirement in quantum optical technology, integrated photonics and new metasurface designs, as well as radio and microwave engineering. Recently, several approaches have been developed to achieve unidirectional scattering in the far-field relying on Huygens' dipolar sources, and in waveguided optics based on spin-Hall effects involving circularly polarised electric or magnetic dipoles, all of which can be realised with plasmonic or dielectric nanoparticles. Here we show that there exists a dipolar source compli…
Controlling the launching efficiencies and the directionality of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and their decoupling to freely propagating light is a major goal for the development of plasmonic devices and systems. Here, we report on the design and experimental observation of a highly efficient unidirectional surface plasmon launcher composed of eleven subwavelength grooves, each with a distinct depth and width. Our observations show that, under normal illumination by a focused Gaussian beam, unidirectional SPP launching with an efficiency of at least 52% is achieved experimentally with a c…
The design of far-field radiation diagrams from combined electric and magnetic dipolar sources has recently found applications in nanophotonic metasurfaces that realize tailored reflection and refraction. Such dipolar sources also exhibit important near-field evanescent coupling properties with applications in polarimetry and quantum optics. Here we introduce a rigorous theoretical framework for engineering the angular spectra encompassing both far- and near-fields of electric and magnetic sources and develop a unified description of both free space and guided mode directional radiation. The a…
Tunable terahertz plasmons are essential for reconfigurable photonics, which have been demonstrated in graphene through gating, though with relatively weak responses. Here, we demonstrate strong terahertz plasmons in graphite thin films via infrared spectroscopy, with dramatic tunability by even a moderate temperature change or an in-situ bias voltage. Meanwhile, through magneto-plasmon studies, we reveal that massive electrons and massless Dirac holes make comparable contributions to the plasmon response. Our study not only sets up a platform for further exploration of two-component plasmas, …
Metasurfaces, the two-dimensional counterpart of metamaterials, have caught great attention thanks to their powerful capabilities on manipulation of electromagnetic waves. Recent times have seen the emergence of a variety of metasurfaces exhibiting not only countless functionalities, but also a reconfigurable response. Additionally, digital or coding metasurfaces have revolutionized the field by describing the device as a matrix of discrete building block states, thus drawing clear parallelisms with information theory and opening new ways to model, compose, and (re)program advanced metasurface…
Single photons carrying spin angular momentum (SAM), i.e., circularly polarized single photons generated typically by subjecting a quantum emitter (QE) to a strong magnetic field at low temperatures are at the core of chiral quantum optics enabling non-reciprocal single-photon configurations and deterministic spin-photon interfaces. Here we propose a conceptually new approach to the room-temperature generation of SAM-coded single photons (SSPs) entailing QE non-radiative coupling to surface plasmons that are transformed, by interacting with an optical metasurface, into a collimated stream of S…
Fundamental quantum electrodynamical (QED) processes such as spontaneous emission and electron-photon scattering encompass a wealth of phenomena that form one of the cornerstones of modern science and technology. Conventionally, calculations in QED and in other field theories assume that incoming particles are single-momentum states. The possibility that coherent superposition states, i.e. "shaped wavepackets", will alter the result of fundamental scattering processes is thereby neglected, and is instead assumed to sum to an incoherent (statistical) distribution in the incoming momentum. Here,…
