We study the random energy model with a hierarchical structure known as the generalized random energy model (GREM). In contrast to the original analysis by the microcanonical ensemble formalism, we investigate the GREM by the canonical ensemble formalism in conjunction with the replica method. In this analysis, spin-glass-order parameters are defined for respective hierarchy level, and all possible patterns of replica symmetry breaking (RSB) are taken into account. As a result, we find that the higher step RSB ansatz is useful for describing spin-glass phases in this system. For investigating the nature of the higher step RSB, we generalize the notion of complexity developed for the one-step RSB to the higher step and demonstrate how the GREM is characterized by the generalized complexity. In addition, we propose a novel mean-field spin-glass model with a hierarchical structure, which is equivalent to the GREM at a certain limit. We also show that the same hierarchical structure can be implemented to other mean-field spin models than the GREM. Such models with hierarchy exhibit phase transitions of multiple steps in common.
Family of replica matrices, related to general ultrametric spaces, is introduced. These matrices generalize the known Parisi matrices. Some functionals of replica approach are computed.

Replica symmetry breaking solutions for the new replica anzats, related to general ultrametric spaces, are investigated. A variant of analysis on trees is developed and applied to the computation of the n\to0 limit in the new replica anzats.
The p-adic formulation of replica symmetry breaking is presented. In this approach ultrametricity is a natural consequence of the basic properties of the p-adic numbers. Many properties can be simply derived in this approach and p-adic Fourier transform seems to be an promising tool.
Methods of p-adic analysis are applied to the investigation of the spontaneous symmetry breaking in the models of spin glasses. A p-adic expression for the replica matrix is given and moreover the replica matrix in the models of spontaneous breaking of the replica symmetry in the simplest case is expressed in the form of the Vladimirov operator of p-adic fractional differentiation. Also the model of hierarchical diffusion (that was proposed to describe relaxation of spin glasses) investigated using p-adic analysis.
The analysis of the solution with full replica symmetry breaking in the vicinity of $T_c$ of a general spin glass model with reflection symmetry is performed. The leading term in the order parameter function expansion is obtained. Parisi equation for the model is written.
We present a general and powerful numerical method useful to study the density matrix of spin models. We apply the method to finite dimensional spin glasses, and we analyze in detail the four dimensional Edwards-Anderson model with Gaussian quenched random couplings. Our results clearly support the existence of replica symmetry breaking in the thermodynamical limit.
We discuss ergodicity breaking in frustrated disordered systems with no apparent broken symmetry of the Hamiltonian and present a way how to amend it in the low-temperature phase. We demonstrate this phenomenon on mean-field models of spin glasses. We use replicas of the spin variables to test thermodynamic homogeneity of ergodic equilibrium systems. We show that replica-symmetry breaking reflects ergodicity breaking and is used to restore an ergodic state. We then present explicit asymptotic solutions for the Ising, Potts and $p$-spin glasses. Each of the models shows a different low-temperat…
The full mean-field solution of spin glass models with a continuous order-parameter function is not directly available and approximate schemes must be used to assess its properties. The averaged physical quantities are to be represented via the replica trick and the limit to zero number of replicas is to be performed for each of them. To avoid this we introduce a perturbation expansion for a mean-field free-energy functional with a continuous order-parameter function without the need to refer to the replica trick. The expansion can be used to calculate all physical quantities in all mean-field…
We solve the random energy model when the energies of the configurations take only integer values. In the thermodynamic limit, the average overlaps remain size dependent and oscillate as the system size increases. While the extensive part of the free energy can still be obtained by a standard replica calculation with one step replica symmetry breaking, it is no longer possible to recover the overlaps in this way. A possible way to adapt the replica approach is to allow the sizes of the blocks in the Parisi matrix to fluctuate and to take complex values.
The effective potential for the two-replica system of the random energy model is exactly derived. It is an analytic function of the magnetizations of two replicas, $φ^1$ and $φ^2$ in the high-temperature phase. In the low-temperature phase, where the replica symmetry breaking takes place, the effective potential becomes non-analytic when $φ^1=φ^2$. The non-analyticity is considered as a consequence of the condensation of the Boltzmann measure, which is a typical property of a glass phase.
The leading term for the average height of the barriers which could separate pure states in Ising spin glasses is calculated using instanton methods. It is finite in dimensions $d < 6$. Replica symmetry breaking requires that the barriers between pure states are infinite in the thermodynamic limit, as finite barriers allow thermal mixing of pure states. As a consequence, a replica symmetry broken phase cannot survive when $d < 6$. However, for $d > 6$ no similar instanton solution exists.
Within a Kuhn-Tucker cavity method introduced in a former paper, we study optimal stability learning for situations, where in the replica formalism the replica symmetry may be broken, namely (i) the case of a simple perceptron above the critical loading, and (ii) the case of two-layer AND-perceptrons, if one learns with maximal stability. We find that the deviation of our cavity solution from the replica symmetric one in these cases is a clear indication of the necessity of replica symmetry breaking. In any case the cavity solution tends to underestimate the storage capabilities of the network…
We present a new method to study disordered systems in the low temperature limit. The method uses the replicated Hamiltonian. It studies the saddle points of this Hamiltonian and shows how the various saddle point contributions can be resummed in order to obtain the scaling behaviour at low temperatures. In a large class of strongly disordered systems, it is necessary to include saddle points of the Hamiltonian which break the replica symmetry in a vector sector, as opposed to the usual matrix sector breaking of spin glass mean field theory.
A formalism capable of handling the first step of hierarchical replica symmetry breaking in finite-connectivity models is introduced. The emerging order parameter is claimed to be a probability distribution over the space of field distributions (or, equivalently magnetisation distributions) inside the cluster of states. The approach is shown to coincide with the previous works in the replica symmetric case and in the two limit cases m=0,1 where m is Parisi's break-point. As an application to the study of optimization problems, the ground-state properties of the random 3-Satisfiability problem …
We study a 7-state Potts glass model in three dimensions with first, second, and third neighbor interactions with a bimodal distribution of couplings by Monte Carlo simulations. Our results show the existence of a spin-glass transition at a finite temperature T_c, a discontinuous jump of an order parameter at T_c without latent heat, and a non-trivial structure of the order-parameter distribution below T_c. They are compatible with a one-step replica symmetry breaking.
The spin and the chirality orderings of the three-dimensional Heisenberg spin glass with the weak random anisotropy are studied under applied magnetic fields by equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations. A replica symmetry breaking transition occurs in the chiral sector accompanied by the simultaneous spin-glass order. The ordering behavior differs significantly from that of the Ising SG, despite the similarity in the global symmetry. Our observation is consistent with the spin-chirality decoupling-recoupling scenario of a spin-glass transition.
A field-theoretic description of the critical behavior of weakly disordered systems with a $p$-component order parameter is given. For systems of an arbitrary dimension in the range from three to four, a renormalization group analysis of the effective replica Hamiltonian of the model with an interaction potential without replica symmetry is given in the two-loop approximation. For the case of the one-step replica symmetry breaking, fixed points of the renormalization group equations are found using the Pade-Borel summing technique. For every value $p$, the threshold dimensions of the system th…
In a recent letter Marinari et al [Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 1698 (1998)] introduced a new method to study spin glass transitions and argued that by probing replica symmetry (RS) as opposed to time reversal symmetry (TRS), their method unambiguously shows that replica symmetry breaking (RSB) occurs in short-range spin glasses. In this comment we show that while the new method is indeed useful for studying transitions in systems where TRS is absent (such as the p-spin model studied by them), the conclusion that it shows the existence of RSB in short-range spin glasses is wrong.
Extensive equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations are performed for a three-dimensional Heisenberg spin glass with the nearest-neighbor Gaussian coupling to investigate its spin-glass and chiral-glass orderings. The occurrence of a finite-temperature chiral-glass transition without the conventional spin-glass order is established. Critical exponents characterizing the transition are different from those of the standard Ising spin glass. The calculated overlap distribution suggests the appearance of a peculiar type of replica-symmetry breaking in the chiral-glass ordered state.
In this article, we study an elastic manifold in quenched disorder in the limit of zero temperature. Naively it is equivalent to a free theory with elasticity in Fourier-space proportional to k^4 instead of k^2, i.e. a model without disorder in two space-dimensions less. This phenomenon, called dimensional reduction, is most elegantly obtained using supersymmetry. However, scaling arguments suggest, and functional renormalization shows that dimensional reduction breaks down beyond the Larkin length. Thus one equivalently expects a break-down of supersymmetry. Using methods of functional renorm…
Among the various remarkable contributions of Giorgio Parisi to physics, his formulation of the replica symmetry breaking solution for the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model stands out. In this article, different historical sources are used to reconstruct the scientific and professional contexts of this prodigious advance.
In a comment cond-mat/9811080 to our paper (PRL, vol 81, 1698 (1998)) H. Bokil, A. Bray, B. Drossel and M. Moore claimed that we have reached wrong conclusions. We show here why their claims are not correct, especially when compared to the analysis of reference cond-mat/9808140.
In this talk I will presente the physical meaning of replica symmetry breaking stressing the physical concepts. After introducing the theoretical framework and the experimental evidence for replica symmetry breaking, I will describe some of the basic ideas using a probabilistic language. The predictions for off-equilibrium dynamics will be shortly outlined.
We analyze the infinite range Ising spin-glass in a transverse-field below the critical temperature by a one step replica symmetry theory(1S-RSB). The set of n replicas is divided in r blocks of m replicas each. We present results for different values of the block-size parameter m. The spin operators are represented by bilinear combinations of fermionic fields and we compare the results of two models: in the four state (4S)-model the diagonal S^z operator has two unphysical vanishing eigenvalues, that are suppressed by a restraint in the two states (2S)-model. In the static approximation we ob…
We obtain an exact analytic expression for the average distribution, in the thermodynamic limit, of overlaps between two copies of the same random energy model (REM) at different temperatures. We quantify the non-self averaging effects and provide an exact approach to the computation of the fluctuations in the distribution of overlaps in the thermodynamic limit. We show that the overlap probabilities satisfy recurrence relations that generalise Ghirlanda-Guerra identities to two temperatures. We also analyse the two temperature REM using the replica method. The replica expressions for the over…
Within the Bethe- Peierls method the for short- ranged Ising spin glass, recently formulated by Serva and Paladin, the equation for the spin glass parameter function near the transition to the paramagnetic phase has been carried out. The form of this equation is qualitatively similar to that for Sherrington- Kirpatrick model, but quantitatively the order parametr function depends of the dimension d of the system. In the case d tends to infinity one obtains well known Parisi solution.
A field-theoretic description of the critical behaviour of the weakly disordered systems is given. Directly, for three- and two-dimensional systems a renormalization analysis of the effective Hamiltonian of model with replica symmetry breaking (RSB) potentials is carried out in the two-loop approximation. For case with 1-step RSB the fixed points (FP's) corresponding to stability of the various types of critical behaviour are identified with the use of the Pade-Borel summation technique. Analysis of FP's has shown a stability of the critical behaviour of the weakly disordered systems with resp…
Systems of globally coupled logistic maps (GCLM) can display complex collective behaviour characterized by the formation of synchronous clusters. In the dynamical clustering regime, such systems possess a large number of coexisting attractors and might be viewed as dynamical glasses. Glass properties of GCLM in the thermodynamical limit of large system sizes $N$ are investigated. Replicas, representing orbits that start from various initial conditions, are introduced and distributions of their overlaps are numerically determined. We show that for fixed-field ensembles of initial conditions, as…
We investigate the relation between spontaneous and explicit replica symmetry breaking in the theory of disordered systems. On general ground, we prove the equivalence between the replicon operator associated with the stability of the replica symmetric solution in the standard replica scheme and the operator signaling a breakdown of the solution with analytic field dependence in a scheme in which replica symmetry is explicitly broken by applied sources. This opens the possibility to study, via the recently developed functional renormalization group, unresolved questions related to spontaneous …
Using numerical self-consistent solutions of a sequence of finite replica symmetry breakings (RSB) and Wilson's renormalization group but with the number of RSB-steps playing a role of decimation scales, we report evidence for a non-trivial T->0-limit of the Parisi order function q(x) for the SK spin glass. Supported by scaling in RSB-space, the fixed point order function is conjectured to be q*(a)=sqrt{π/2} a/ξerf(ξ/a) on 0\leq a\leq infty where x/T->a at T=0 and ξ\approx 1.13\pm 0.01. ξplays the role of a correlation length in a-space. q*(a) may be viewed as the solution of an effective 1D f…
Finite-size effects in the mean-field Ising spin glass and the mean-field three-state Potts glass are investigated by Monte Carlo simulations. In the thermodynamic limit, each model is known to exhibit a continuous phase transition into the ordered state with a full and a one-step replica-symmetry breaking (RSB), respectively. In the Ising case, Binder parameter g calculated for various finite sizes remains positive at any temperature and crosses at the transition point, while in the Potts case g develops a negative dip without showing a crossing in the g>0 region. By contrast, non-self averag…
We discuss the mean-field theory of spin-glass models with frustrated long-range random spin exchange. We analyze the reasons for breakdown of the simple mean-field theory of Sherrington and Kirkpatrick. We relate the replica-symmetry breaking to ergodicity breaking and use the concept of real replicas to restore thermodynamic homogeneity of the equilibrium free energy in a replicated phase space. Embedded replications of the spin variables result in a set of hierarchical free energies and overlap susceptibilities between replica hierarchies as order parameters. The limit to infinite number of…
An one-step replica-symmetry-breaking solution for finite connectivity spin-glass models with K body interaction is constructed at finite temperature using the replica method and thermodynamic constraints. In the absence of external fields, this construction provides a general extension of replica symmetric solution at finite replica number to one-step replica-symmetry-breaking solution. It is found that this result is formally equivalent to that of the one-step replica-symmetry-breaking cavity method. To confirm the validity of the obtained solution, Monte Carlo simulations are performed for …
A scaling theory of replica symmetry breaking (RSB) in the SK-model is presented in the framework of critical phenomena for the scaling regime of small inverse RSB-orders, small temperatures, small magnetic fields, and near opposite pseudo-dynamic limits. We employ the pseudo-dynamical picture (PRL98, 127201 (2007)) with two critical points, where separated temperature- and magnetic field-scaling is obtained. An unconventional scaling hypothesis for the free energy is given, modeling this separated scaling in accordance with detailed numerical self-consistent solutions for up to 200 orders of …
It is shown that continuously changing the effective number of interacting particles in p-spin-glass-like model allows to describe the transition from the full replica symmetry breaking glass solution to stable first replica symmetry breaking glass solution in the case of non-reflective symmetry diagonal operators used instead of Ising spins. As an example, axial quadrupole moments in place of Ising spins are considered and the boundary value $p_{c_{1}}\cong 2.5$ is found.
Two, replica symmetry breaking specific, quantities of the Ising spin glass --- the breakpoint x1 of the order parameter function and the Almeida-Thouless line --- are calculated in six dimensions (the upper critical dimension of the replicated field theory used), and also below and above it. The results comfirm that replica symmetry breaking does exist below d=6, and also the tendency of its escalation for decreasing dimension continues. As a new feature, x1 has a nonzero and universal value for d<6 at criticality. Near six dimensions we have x1=3(6-d)+O[(6-d)^2]. A method to expand a generic…
We describe the effect of replica symmetry breaking in the field distribution function P(h) of the T=0 SK-model as the difference between a split Gaussian and the first excited state $ψ_1$ of a weakly anharmonic oscillator with nonanalytic shift by means of the analogy $P(h)<->|ψ_1(x)|$. New numerical calculations of the leading 100 orders of replica symmetry breaking (RSB) were performed in order to obtain P(h), employing the exact mapping between density of states $ρ(E)$ of the fermionic SK-model and P(h) of the standard model, as derived by Perez-Castillo and Sherrington. Fast convergence t…
We prove that the distribution functions of magnetization and spin glass order parameter coincide on the Nishimori line in the phase diagram of the $\pm J$ Ising model in any dimension. This implies absence of replica symmetry breaking because the distribution function of magnetization consists only of two delta functions, suggesting the same simple structure for the distribution of spin glass order parameter. It then follows that the mixed (glassy) phase, where the ferromagnetic order coexists with complex phase space, should lie, if any, below the Nishimori line. We also argue that the AT li…
We study evolutionary canalization using a spin-glass model with replica theory, where spins and their interactions are dynamic variables whose configurations correspond to phenotypes and genotypes, respectively. The spins are updated under temperature T_S, and the genotypes evolve under temperature T_J, according to the evolutionary fitness. It is found that adaptation occurs at T_S < T_S^{RS}, and a replica symmetric phase emerges at T_S^{RSB} < T_S < T_S^{RS}. The replica symmetric phase implies canalization, and replica symmetry breaking at lower temperatures indicates loss of robustness.
Simulational studies of spin glasses in the last decade have focussed on the so-called replicon exponent $α$ as a means of determining whether the low-temperature phase of spin glasses is described by the replica symmetry breaking picture of Parisi or by the droplet-scaling picture. On the latter picture, it should be zero, but we shall argue that it will only be zero for systems of linear dimension $L > L^*$. The crossover length $L^*$ may be of the order of hundreds of lattice spacings in three dimensions and approach infinity in 6 dimensions. We use the droplet-scaling picture to show that …
A Gaussian variational approximation is often used to study interfaces in random media. By considering the 1+1 dimensional directed polymer in a random medium, it is shown here that the variational Ansatz typically leads to a negative variance of the free energy. The situation improves by taking into account more and more steps of replica symmetry breaking. For infinite order breaking the variance is zero (i.e. subextensive). This situation is reminiscent of the negative entropies in mean field spin glass models, which were also eliminated by considering infinite order replica symmetry breakin…
We apply the cavity method to a spin glass model on a `small world' lattice, a random bond graph super-imposed upon a 1-dimensional ferromagnetic ring. We show the correspondence with a replicated transfer matrix approach, up to the level of one step replica symmetry breaking (1RSB). Using the scheme developed by Mézard & Parisi for the Bethe lattice, we evaluate observables for a model with fixed connectivity and $\pm J$ long range bonds. Our results agree with numerical simulations significantly better than the replica symmetric (RS) theory.
We study the localization in the one-dimensional trap model in terms of statistical mechanics of trajectories. By numerically investigating overlap between trajectories of two particles on a common disordered potential, we find that there is a phase transition in the path ensemble. We characterize the low temperature phase as a replica symmetry breaking phase in trajectory space.
We expand asymptotically mean-field solutions of the $p<4$ Potts glass with various levels of replica-symmetry breaking below the transition temperature to the glassy phase. We find that the ordered phase is degenerate and solutions with one hierarchy of spin replicas and with the full continuous replica-symmetry breaking coexist for $p> p^{*} \approx 2.82$. The latter emerges immediately with the instability of the replica-symmetric one. Apart from these two solutions there exists also a succession of unstable states converging to the solution with the continuous replica-symmetry breaking tha…
We study critical behaviour of disordered magnets near four dimensions. We consider the system with explicit cubic anisotropy and scalar disorder and that with random direction of anisotropy axis. The quenched disorder is taken into account by replica method. Using the method of operator product expansion, we derive in the first order to $ε$ approximation the renormalization group equations taking into account possible replica symmetry breaking.
We study a Brownian particle passively driven by a field obeying the noisy Burgers equation. We demonstrate that the system exhibits replica symmetry breaking in the path ensemble with the initial position of the particle being fixed. The key step of the proof is that the path ensemble with a modified boundary condition can be exactly mapped to the canonical ensemble of directed polymers.
We study the dynamics of a particle in a one-dimensional Gaussian random potential with logarithmic correlations. It was shown in previous studies that the model exhibits a dynamical transition between two subdiffusive phases. We numerically investigate both phases by focusing on overlap between trajectories of two independent particles in a common random potential, and show that replica symmetry breaking in trajectory space occurs in the low-temperature phase.
In this paper, we investigate the finite connectivity spin-glass problem. Our work is focused on the expansion around the point of infinite connectivity of the free energy of a spin glass on a graph with Poissonian distributed connectivity: we are interested to study the first-order correction to the infinite connectivity result for large values or the connectivity $z$. The same calculations for one and two replica symmetry breakings were done in previous works; the result for the first-order correction was divergent in the limit of zero temperature and it was suggested that it was an artifact…
We perform the replica symmetry breaking (RSB) in the vicinity of the point of instability of the replica symmetric solution in the model of axial quadrupolar glass. It is shown that the solution with the first stage RSB is stable against the second stage RSB. Although there is no reflection symmetry the 1RSB solution bifurcates continuously from the RS one. These facts mean that our model can not be associated with one of two classes usually considered in spin glass theory.
We study hierarchies of replica-symmetry-breaking solutions of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model. Stationarity equations for order parameters of solutions with an arbitrary number of hierarchies are set and the limit to infinite number of hierarchical levels is discussed. In particular, we demonstrate how the continuous replica-symmetry breaking scheme of Parisi emerges and how the limit to infinite-many hierarchies leads to equations for the order-parameter function of the continuous solution. The general analysis is accompanied by an explicit asymptotic solution near the de Almeida-Thouless …
We discuss mean field theory of glasses without quenched disorder focusing on the justification of the replica approach to thermodynamics. We emphasize the assumptions implicit in this method and discuss how they can be verified. The formalism is applied to the long range Ising model with orthogonal coupling matrix. We find the one step replica-symmetry breaking solution and show that it is stable in the intermediate temperature range that includes the glass state but excludes very low temperatures. At very low temperatures this solution becomes unstable and this approach fails.
We consider the quadrupolar glass model with infinite-range random interaction. Introducing a simple one-step replica symmetry breaking ansatz we investigate the para-glass continuous (discontinuous) transition which occurs below (above) a critical value of the quadrupole dimension m*. By using a mean-field approximation we study the stability of the one-step replica symmetry breaking solution and show that for m>m* there are two transitions. The thermodynamic transition is discontinuous but there is no latent heat. At a higher temperature we find the dynamical or glass transition temperature …
We study quantum spin systems with quenched Gaussian disorder. We prove that the variance of all physical quantities in a certain class vanishes in the infinite volume limit. We study also replica symmetry breaking phenomena, where the variance of an overlap operator in the other class does not vanish in the replica symmetric Gibbs state. On the other hand, it vanishes in a spontaneous replica symmetry breaking Gibbs state defined by applying an infinitesimal replica symmetry breaking field. We prove also that the finite variance of the overlap operator in the replica symmetric Gibbs state imp…
A short survey is presented on spin--glass--like states characteristics in complex nonmagnetic systems. We discuss the interplay of the interaction structure and symmetry with the classification scenarios of the replica symmetry breaking. It is shown that the kind of the transition to the nonergodic state depends not only on the presence or absence of the reflection symmetry but on the number of interacting operators and their individual characteristics.
We extend and complete recent work concerning the analytic solution of the minority game. Nash equilibria (NE) of the game have been found to be related to the ground states of a disordered hamiltonian with replica symmetry breaking (RSB), signalling the presence of a large number of them. Here we study the number of NE both analytically and numerically. We then analyze the stability of the recently-obtained replica-symmetric (RS) solution and, in the region where it becomes unstable, derive the solution within one-step RSB approximation. We are finally able to draw a detailed phase diagram of…
