In this paper, we investigate the finite connectivity spin-glass problem. Our work is focused on the expansion around the point of infinite connectivity of the free energy of a spin glass on a graph with Poissonian distributed connectivity: we are interested to study the first-order correction to the infinite connectivity result for large values or the connectivity $z$. The same calculations for one and two replica symmetry breakings were done in previous works; the result for the first-order correction was divergent in the limit of zero temperature and it was suggested that it was an artifact for having a finite number of replica symmetry breakings. In this paper we are able to calculate the expansion for an infinite number of replica symmetry breakings: in the zero-temperature limit, we obtain a well defined free energy. We have shown that cancellations of divergent terms occur in the case of an infinite number of replica symmetry breakings and that the pathological behavior of the expansion was due only to the finite number of replica symmetry breakings.
Bethe Lattice Spin Glasses (BLSG) are models with finite connectivity which undergo a Replica Symmetry Breaking (RSB) phase transition in field, even at zero temperature. The order parameter describing this phase is a function related to the non-trivial organization of the states. We compute numerically the spin glass order parameter at zero temperature in BLSG with coordination number $z=3$ and couplings $J=\pm1$, near the transition. The method is based on a universal formula which relates the order parameter to the joint probability distribution of the energy gaps of the lowest lying states…
We investigate the nature of the Bose glass phase of the disordered Bose-Hubbard model in $d>2$ and demonstrate the existence of a glass-like replica symmetry breaking (RSB) order parameter in terms of particle number fluctuations. Starting from a strong-coupling expansion around the atomic limit, we study the instability of the Mott insulator towards the formation of a Bose glass. We add some infinitesimal RSB, following the Parisi hierarchical approach in the most general form, and observe its flow under the momentum-shell renormalization group scheme. We find a new fixed point with one-step…
We investigate the p-state mean-field model of the Potts glass ($2\le p \le 4$) below the continuous phase transition to a glassy phase. We find that apart from a solution with a first hierarchical level of replica-symmetry breaking (1RSB), locally stable close to the transition point, there is a continuous full replica-symmetry breaking (FRSB) solution. The latter is marginally stable and has a higher free energy than the former. We argue that the true equilibrium is reached only by FRSB, being globally thermodynamically homogeneous, whereas 1RSB is only locally homogeneous.
We obtain phase diagrams of regular and irregular finite connectivity spin-glasses. Contact is firstly established between properties of the phase diagram and the performances of low density parity check codes (LDPC) within the Replica Symmetric (RS) ansatz. We then study the location of the dynamical and critical transition of these systems within the one step Replica Symmetry Breaking theory (RSB), extending similar calculations that have been performed in the past for the Bethe spin-glass problem. We observe that, away from the Nishimori line, in the low temperature region, the location of …
We perform the replica symmetry breaking (RSB) in the vicinity of the point of instability of the replica symmetric solution in the model of axial quadrupolar glass. It is shown that the solution with the first stage RSB is stable against the second stage RSB. Although there is no reflection symmetry the 1RSB solution bifurcates continuously from the RS one. These facts mean that our model can not be associated with one of two classes usually considered in spin glass theory.
We investigate the replica symmetry broken (RSB) phase of spin glass (SG) models in a random field defined on Bethe lattices at zero temperature. From the properties of the RSB solution we deduce a closed equation for the extreme values of the cavity fields. This equation turns out not to depend on the parameters defining the RSB, and it predicts that the spontaneous RSB does not take place homogeneously on the whole system. Indeed, there exist spins having the same effective local field in all local ground states, exactly as in the replica symmetric (RS) phase, while the spontaneous RSB manif…
We define modulated replica symmetry breaking (RSB)-schemes which combine tree- and wave-like structures. A modulated scheme and unmodulated RSB are applied at 1-step level to a semiconductor model with antiferromagnetic Korenblit-Shender interaction. By comparison of the free energies we find evidence that a T=0 phase transition in the ferrimagnetic phase leads to a transition between the different RSB-schemes. An embedding factor of Parisi block matrices with sublattice-asymmetrical size is employed as a new variational parameter in the modulated scheme.
We prove the impossibility of recent attempts to decouple the Replica Symmetry Breaking (RSB) picture for finite-dimensional spin glasses from the existence of many thermodynamic (i.e., infinite-volume) pure states while preserving another signature RSB feature --- space filling relative domain walls between different finite-volume states. Thus revisions of the notion of pure states cannot shield the RSB picture from the internal contradictions that rule out its physical correctness in finite dimensions at low temperature in large finite volume.
We study the random energy model with a hierarchical structure known as the generalized random energy model (GREM). In contrast to the original analysis by the microcanonical ensemble formalism, we investigate the GREM by the canonical ensemble formalism in conjunction with the replica method. In this analysis, spin-glass-order parameters are defined for respective hierarchy level, and all possible patterns of replica symmetry breaking (RSB) are taken into account. As a result, we find that the higher step RSB ansatz is useful for describing spin-glass phases in this system. For investigating …
The one-step replica symmetry breaking (RSB) is used to study a two-sublattice fermionic infinite-range Ising spin glass (SG) model in a transverse field $Γ$. The problem is formulated in a Grassmann path integral formalism within the static approximation. In this model, a parallel magnetic field $H$ breaks the symmetry of the sublattices. It destroys the antiferromagnetic (AF) order, but it can favor the nonergodic mixed phase (SG+AF) characterizing an asymmetric RSB region. In this region, intra-sublattice disordered interactions $V$ increase the difference between the RSB solutions of each …
We studied the phase transition of the $\pm J$ Heisenberg model with and without a random anisotropy on four dimensional lattice $L\times L\times L\times (L+1)$ $(L\leq 9)$. We showed that the Binder parameters $g(L,T)$'s for different sizes do not cross even when the anisotropy is present. On the contrary, when a strong anisotropy exists, $g(L,T)$ exhibits a steep negative dip near the spin-glass phase transition temperature $T_{\rm SG}$ similarly to the $p-$state infinite-range Potts glass model with $p \geq 3$, in which the one-step replica-symmetry-breaking (RSB) occurs. We speculated that…
In a recent letter Marinari et al [Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 1698 (1998)] introduced a new method to study spin glass transitions and argued that by probing replica symmetry (RS) as opposed to time reversal symmetry (TRS), their method unambiguously shows that replica symmetry breaking (RSB) occurs in short-range spin glasses. In this comment we show that while the new method is indeed useful for studying transitions in systems where TRS is absent (such as the p-spin model studied by them), the conclusion that it shows the existence of RSB in short-range spin glasses is wrong.
We use a sample-dependent analysis, based on medians and quantiles, to analyze the behavior of the overlap probability distribution of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick and 3D Edwards-Anderson models of Ising spin glasses. We find that this approach is an effective tool to distinguish between RSB-like and droplet-like behavior of the spin-glass phase. Our results are in agreement with a RSB-like behavior for the 3D Edwards-Anderson model.
We investigate the phase structure of the random-field Ising model with a bimodal random field distribution. Our aim is to test for the possibility of an equilibrium spin-glass phase, and for replica symmetry breaking (RSB) within such a phase. We study a low-temperature region where the spin-glass phase is thought to occur, but which has received little numerical study to date. We use the exchange Monte-Carlo technique to acquire equilibrium information about the model, in particular the $P(q)$ distribution and the spectrum of eigenvalues of the spin-spin correlation matrix (which tests for t…
We study the Blume-Emery-Griffiths spin glass model in presence of an attractive coupling between real replicas, and evaluate the effective potential as a function of the density overlap. We find that there is a region, above the first order transition of the model, where metastable states with a large density overlap exist. The line where these metastable states appear should correspond to a purely dynamical transition, with a breaking of ergodicity. Differently from what happens in p-spin glasses, in this model the dynamical transition would not be the precursor of a 1-step RSB transition, b…
Numerical results up to 42nd order of replica symmetry breaking (RSB) are used to predict the singular structure of the SK spin glass at T=0. We confirm predominant single parameter scaling and derive corrections for the T=0 order function q(a), related to a Langevin equation with pseudotime 1/a. a=0 and a=\infty are shown to be two critical points for \infty-RSB, associated with two discrete spectra of Parisi block size ratios, attached to a continuous spectrum. Finite-RSB-size scaling, associated exponents, and T=0-energy are obtained with unprecedented accuracy.
In the first part of this paper, we derive the general replica equations that describe infinite-dimensional hard spheres at any level of replica symmetry breaking (RSB) and in particular in the fullRSB scheme. We show that these equations are formally very similar to the ones that have been derived for spin glass models, thus showing that the analogy between spin glasses and structural glasses conjectured by Kirkpatrick, Thirumalai, and Wolynes is realized in a strong sense in the mean field limit. We also suggest how the computation could be generalized in an approximate way to finite dimensi…
The fermionic Ising spin glass models in a transverse field are investigated in a Grassmann path integral formalism. The Parisi's scheme of one-step replica symmetry breaking (RSB) is used within the static ansatz. This formalism has already been applied in a theory in which $m$ (Parisi's block-size parameter) is taken as a constant (PRB 72, 014447 (2005)). Now, it is extended to consider $m$ as a variational parameter. In this case, the results show that RSB is present when $T\to0$, in which the system is driven by quantum fluctuations.
We consider the p-spin spherical spin-glass model in the presence of an external magnetic field as a general example of a mean-field system where a one step replica symmetry breaking (1-RSB) occurs. In this context we compute the complexity of the Thouless-Anderson-Palmer states, performing a quenched computation. We find what is the general connection between this method and the standard static 1-RSB one, formulating a clear mapping between the parameters used in the two different calculations. We also perform a dynamical analysis of the model, by which we confirm the validity of our results.
The de Almeida-Thouless (AT) line is the phase boundary in the temperature--magnetic field plane of an Ising spin glass at which a continuous (i.e. second-order) transition from a paramagnet to a replica-symmetry-breaking (RSB) phase occurs, according to mean-field theory. Here, using field-theoretic perturbative renormalization group methods on the Bray-Roberts reduced Landau-Ginzburg-type theory for a short-range Ising spin glass in space of dimension $d$, we show that at nonzero magnetic field the nature of the corresponding transition is modified as follows: a) for $d-6$ small and positive…
Finite-size effects in the mean-field Ising spin glass and the mean-field three-state Potts glass are investigated by Monte Carlo simulations. In the thermodynamic limit, each model is known to exhibit a continuous phase transition into the ordered state with a full and a one-step replica-symmetry breaking (RSB), respectively. In the Ising case, Binder parameter g calculated for various finite sizes remains positive at any temperature and crosses at the transition point, while in the Potts case g develops a negative dip without showing a crossing in the g>0 region. By contrast, non-self averag…
Using numerical self-consistent solutions of a sequence of finite replica symmetry breakings (RSB) and Wilson's renormalization group but with the number of RSB-steps playing a role of decimation scales, we report evidence for a non-trivial T->0-limit of the Parisi order function q(x) for the SK spin glass. Supported by scaling in RSB-space, the fixed point order function is conjectured to be q*(a)=sqrt{π/2} a/ξerf(ξ/a) on 0\leq a\leq infty where x/T->a at T=0 and ξ\approx 1.13\pm 0.01. ξplays the role of a correlation length in a-space. q*(a) may be viewed as the solution of an effective 1D f…
We compute the Functional Renormalization Group (FRG) disorder- correlator function R(v) for d-dimensional elastic manifolds pinned by a random potential in the limit of infinite embedding space dimension N. It measures the equilibrium response of the manifold in a quadratic potential well as the center of the well is varied from 0 to v. We find two distinct scaling regimes: (i) a "single shock" regime, v^2 ~ 1/L^d where L^d is the system volume and (ii) a "thermodynamic" regime, v^2 ~ N. In regime (i) all the equivalent replica symmetry breaking (RSB) saddle points within the Gaussian variati…
A constructive scheme for determining pure states (clusters) at very low temperature in the 3-spins glass model on a random lattice is provided, in full agreement with Parisi's one step replica symmetry breaking (RSB) scheme. Proof is based on the analysis of an exact decimation procedure. When the number c of couplings per spin is smaller than some critical value c_d, all spins are eliminated at the end of decimation (RS phase). In the range c_d<c<c_s, a reduced Hamiltonian is left; each ground state (GS) of the latter is a "seed" from which a cluster of GS of the original Hamiltonian can be …
The low-temperature instability of one-step replica symmetry breaking (1RSB) phase in 3-state Potts spin glass is obtained explicitly. The temperature of the instability is higher than the temperature where the 1RSB entropy becomes negative. The conjecture of the possibility of the low-temperature full RSB is supported.

The variational principle (VP) has been used to capture the metastable states of a glass-forming molecular system without quenched disorder. It has been shown that VP naturally leads to a self-consistent random field Ginzburg-Landau model (RFGLM). In the framework of one-step replica symmetry breaking (1-RSB) the general solution of RFGLM is discussed in the vicinity of the spinodal temperature T_{A} in terms of ``hidden'' formfactors $\tilde g(k)$, g_{0}(k) and $Δ(k)$. The self-generated disorder spontaneously arises. It is argued that at T < T_{A} the activated dynamics is dominant.
Using Monte Carlo simulations (MCS) and the Migdal-Kadanoff approximation (MKA), Marinari et al. study in their comment on our paper the link overlap between two replicas of a three-dimensional Ising spin glass in the presence of a coupling between the replicas. They claim that the results of the MCS indicate replica symmetry breaking (RSB), while those of the MKA are trivial, and that moderate size lattices display the true low temperature behavior. Here we show that these claims are incorrect, and that the results of MCS and MKA both can be explained within the droplet picture.
A formalism capable of handling the first step of hierarchical replica symmetry breaking in finite-connectivity models is introduced. The emerging order parameter is claimed to be a probability distribution over the space of field distributions (or, equivalently magnetisation distributions) inside the cluster of states. The approach is shown to coincide with the previous works in the replica symmetric case and in the two limit cases m=0,1 where m is Parisi's break-point. As an application to the study of optimization problems, the ground-state properties of the random 3-Satisfiability problem …
Understanding the glassy nature of neural networks is pivotal both for theoretical and computational advances in Machine Learning and Theoretical Artificial Intelligence. Keeping the focus on dense associative Hebbian neural networks, the purpose of this paper is two-fold: at first we develop rigorous mathematical approaches to address properly a statistical mechanical picture of the phenomenon of {\em replica symmetry breaking} (RSB) in these networks, then -- deepening results stemmed via these routes -- we aim to inspect the {\em glassiness} that they hide. In particular, regarding the meth…
We prove that the distribution functions of magnetization and spin glass order parameter coincide on the Nishimori line in the phase diagram of the $\pm J$ Ising model in any dimension. This implies absence of replica symmetry breaking because the distribution function of magnetization consists only of two delta functions, suggesting the same simple structure for the distribution of spin glass order parameter. It then follows that the mixed (glassy) phase, where the ferromagnetic order coexists with complex phase space, should lie, if any, below the Nishimori line. We also argue that the AT li…
A field-theory approach is used to investigate the ''spin-glass effects'' on the critical behaviour of systems with weak temperature-like quenched disorder. The renormalization group (RG) analysis of the effective Hamiltonian of a model with replica symmetry breaking (RSB) potentials of a general type is carried out in the two-loop approximation. The fixed-point (FP) stability, recently found within the one-step RSB RG treatment, is further explored in terms of replicon eigenvalues. We find that the traditional FPs, which are usually considered to describe the disorder-induced universal critic…
We discuss replica symmetry breaking (RSB) in spin glasses. We update work in this area, from both the analytical and numerical points of view. We give particular attention to the difficulties stressed by Newman and Stein concerning the problem of constructing pure states in spin glass systems. We mainly discuss what happens in finite-dimensional, realistic spin glasses. Together with a detailed review of some of the most important features, facts, data, and phenomena, we present some new theoretical ideas and numerical results. We discuss among others the basic idea of the RSB theory, correla…
We study evolutionary canalization using a spin-glass model with replica theory, where spins and their interactions are dynamic variables whose configurations correspond to phenotypes and genotypes, respectively. The spins are updated under temperature T_S, and the genotypes evolve under temperature T_J, according to the evolutionary fitness. It is found that adaptation occurs at T_S < T_S^{RS}, and a replica symmetric phase emerges at T_S^{RSB} < T_S < T_S^{RS}. The replica symmetric phase implies canalization, and replica symmetry breaking at lower temperatures indicates loss of robustness.
Replica field theory for the Ising spin glass in zero magnetic field is studied around the upper critical dimension d=6. A scaling theory of the spin glass phase, based on Parisi's ultrametrically organised order parameter, is proposed. We argue that this infinite step replica symmetry broken (RSB) phase is nonperturbative in the sense that amplitudes of scaling forms cannot be expanded in term of the coupling constant w^2. Infrared divergent integrals inevitably appear when we try to compute amplitudes perturbatively, nevertheless the ε-expansion of critical exponents seems to be well-behaved…
We analyze the infinite range Ising spin-glass in a transverse-field below the critical temperature by a one step replica symmetry theory(1S-RSB). The set of n replicas is divided in r blocks of m replicas each. We present results for different values of the block-size parameter m. The spin operators are represented by bilinear combinations of fermionic fields and we compare the results of two models: in the four state (4S)-model the diagonal S^z operator has two unphysical vanishing eigenvalues, that are suppressed by a restraint in the two states (2S)-model. In the static approximation we ob…
We study the RKKY Heisenberg model on a three-dimensional stacked-triangular lattice under magnetic fields by extensive Monte Carlo simulations to get insight into the chiral-degenerate symmetric skyrmion crystal (SkX) in centrosymmetric metallic magnets. The triple-$q$ SkX state and the double-$q$ states are realized, together with the single-$q$ state. We find an unexpected phenomenon of the replica-symmetry breaking (RSB) well-known in glassy systems, although the Hamiltonian and the ordered state are entirely regular. In the RSB SkX phase, the triple-$q$ SkX state macroscopically coexists …
Dynamic scaling analyses of linear and nonlinear ac susceptibilities in a model magnet of the long-rang RKKY Ising spin glass (SG) Dy$_{x}$Y$_{1-x}$Ru$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ were examined. The obtained set of the critical exponents, $γ$ $\sim$ 1, $β$ $\sim$ 1, $δ$ $\sim$ 2, and $zν$ $\sim$ 3.4, indicates the SG phase transition belongs to a different universality class from either the canonical (Heisenberg) or the short-range Ising SGs. The analyses also reveal a finite-temperature SG transition with the same critical exponents under a magnetic field and the phase transition line $T_{\mbox{g}}(H)$ desc…
Models with range-free frustrated Ising spin- and Hubbard interaction are treated exactly by means of the discrete time slicing method. Critical and tricritical points, correlations, and the fermion propagator, are derived as a function of temperature T, chemical potential μ, Hubbard coupling U, and spin glass energy J. The phase diagram is obtained. Replica symmetry breaking (RSB)-effects are evaluated up to four-step order (4RSB). The use of exact relations together with the 4RSB-solutions allow to model exact solutions by interpolation. For T=0, our numerical results provide strong evidence…
We demonstrate through two case studies, one on the p-spin interaction model and the other on the random K-satisfiability problem, that a heterogeneity transition occurs to the ground-state configuration space of a random finite-connectivity spin glass system at certain critical value of the constraint density. At the transition point, exponentially many configuration communities emerge from the ground-state configuration space, making the entropy density s(q) of configuration-pairs a non-concave function of configuration-pair overlap q. Each configuration community is a collection of relative…
At sufficiently low temperatures, the configurational phase space of a large spin-glass system breaks into many separated domains, each of which is referred to as a macroscopic state. The system is able to visit all spin configurations of the same macroscopic state, while it can not spontaneously jump between two different macroscopic states. Ergodicity of the whole configurational phase space of the system, however, can be recovered if a temperature-annealing process is repeated an infinite number of times. In a heating-annealing cycle, the environmental temperature is first elevated to a hig…
In this paper we study two non-mean-field spin models built on a hierarchical lattice: The hierarchical Edward-Anderson model (HEA) of a spin glass, and Dyson's hierarchical model (DHM) of a ferromagnet. For the HEA, we prove the existence of the thermodynamic limit of the free energy and the replica-symmetry-breaking (RSB) free-energy bounds previously derived for the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model of a spin glass. These RSB mean-field bounds are exact only if the order-parameter fluctuations (OPF) vanish: Given that such fluctuations are not negligible in non-mean-field models, we develop a n…
Understanding the low-temperature pure state structure of spin glasses remains an open problem in the field of statistical mechanics of disordered systems. Here we study Monte Carlo dynamics, performing simulations of the growth of correlations following a quench from infinite temperature to a temperature well below the spin-glass transition temperature $T_c$ for a one-dimensional Ising spin glass model with diluted long-range interactions. In this model, the probability $P_{ij}$ that an edge $\{i,j\}$ has nonvanishing interaction falls as a power-law with chord distance, $P_{ij}\propto1/R_{ij…
We present results of numerical simulations on a one-dimensional Ising spin glass with long-range interactions. Parameters of the model are chosen such that it is a proxy for a short-range spin glass above the upper critical dimension (i.e. in the mean-field regime). The system is quenched to a temperature well below the transition temperature $T_c$ and the growth of correlations is observed. The spatial decay of the correlations at distances less than the dynamic correlation length $ξ(t)$ agrees quantitatively with the predictions of a static theory, the "metastate", evaluated according to th…
So far the problem of a spin glass on a Bethe lattice has been solved only at the replica symmetric level, which is wrong in the spin glass phase. Because of some technical difficulties, attempts at deriving a replica symmetry breaking solution have been confined to some perturbative regimes, high connectivity lattices or temperature close to the critical temperature. Using the cavity method, we propose a general non perturbative solution of the Bethe lattice spin glass problem at a level of approximation which is equivalent to a one step replica symmetry breaking solution. The results compare…
We derive the zero-temperature phase diagram of spin glass models with a generic fraction of ferromagnetic interactions on the Bethe lattice. We use the cavity method at the level of one-step replica symmetry breaking (1RSB) and we find three phases: A replica-symmetric (RS) ferromagnetic one, a magnetized spin glass one (the so-called mixed phase), and an unmagnetized spin glass one. We are able to give analytic expressions for the critical point where the RS phase becomes unstable with respect to 1RSB solutions: we also clarify the mechanism inducing such a phase transition. Finally we compa…
I consider branches of Replica-Symmetry-Breaking (RSB) solutions in Glassy systems that display a dynamical transition at a temperature $T_d$ characterized by a Mode-Coupling-Theory dynamical behavior. Below $T_d$ these branches of solutions are considered to be relevant to the complexity and to off-equilibrium dynamics. Under general assumptions I argue that near $T_d$ it is not possible to stabilize the one-step (1RSB) solution beyond the marginal point by making a full RSB (FRSB) ansatz. However, depending on the model, it may exist a temperature $T_*$ strictly lower than $T_d$ below which …
An extensive list of results for the ground state properties of spin glasses on random graphs is presented. These results provide a timely benchmark for currently developing theoretical techniques based on replica symmetry breaking that are being tested on mean-field models at low connectivity. Comparison with existing replica results for such models verifies the strength of those techniques. Yet, we find that spin glasses on fixed-connectivity graphs (Bethe lattices) exhibit a richer phenomenology than has been anticipated by theory. Our data prove to be sufficiently accurate to speculate abo…

During the last years, through the combined effort of the insight, coming from physical intuition and computer simulation, and the exploitation of rigorous mathematical methods, the main features of the mean field Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin glass model have been firmly established. In particular, it has been possible to prove the existence and uniqueness of the infinite volume limit for the free energy, and its Parisi expression, in terms of a variational principle, involving a functional order parameter. Even the expected property of ultrametricity, for the infinite volume states, seems to …
